You're not wrong, but all the gods are terrible in Blood of Zeus. It's why Gaea goes scorched earth.

Actually, I'd argue that we only see a case for the older Olympians* being terrible and even then, it's not all of them: Poseidon, for one, is a really good example of someone who understood that mistakes were made, that something had to give, and was more that ready to set old conflicts aside in order to move forward in the wake of Zeus' death. Hera also seems to be genuinely reflective and apologetic for the crimes she wrought and wanted, more than anything, to be given the opportunity to make amends for her actions by doing the one thing everyone thought she never could; give up her power.

Going down the line, the talking point of "oh, all the gods in Blood of Zeus are terrible" becomes weaker and weaker: Apollo's only actual crime is being too filial/his contempt of Hera, but he shows more compassion and understanding than anything - both while comforting Electra about the nature of her son and by welcoming and supporting Heron, Hermes is also similarly shown with a very strong familial loyalty, but prioritises his work above all else, Hephaestus is a councillor and assistant, Athena is protective and shown, not only rallying together her siblings in order to properly inform them of the nature of the foe they were facing (even when they had been on different sides of the Hera/Zeus conflict and even when it casts Hera in a good light and plainly makes it known that she's being framed) but also getting Persephone to fess up her part in the scheme without resorting to violence.

The only gods that were portrayed poorly in Season 2 were Ares, who feels like he'd be better off being called Damian Wayne with how intensely he's preoccupied with blood purity and being Zeus' legitimate son, Aphrodite who sides with him (but even then is shown feeling ill at ease at going along with his treachery prior to the Eleusinian Stone trial), and Demeter who is so far removed from simply 'being an asshole' that she's hurtled headfirst into being a sadistic supervillain.

(Of course Hades is also a tyrant and an asshole but I also consider him too wishy-washy and inconsistent to figure out what angle they were trying to take with him. I can't think of him as good or bad, merely confusing)

Anyway, I think people hold on to the idea that the gods in BoZ are all assholes too closely because Heron and Seraphim, our main characters, hold on to the idea that ALL gods are assholes due to being the pawn of -counts on fingers- exactly two of them. With the exception of Ares, all of the other gods have been nothing but welcoming and supportive of Heron! And what Hades does to Heron in S2 has nothing to do with his feelings about Heron himself but rather with his own goals and desperations that have been multiplied by Demeter's machinations and his own frustrations at being unable to keep his family together.

To compensate for my emotional damage from episode 3, BOZ gave me what I want (then ruin me again)

Spoiler Alert!!! (y'all should really stay away from my blog if you don't want spoilers)

First off, the show has finally given me what I want: Hyacinthus.

Speaking of sunny boi, it's nice that BOZ has a nod to Apollo being a champion in boxing.

He beat Dionysus bloody. Look at him!

Then there's... Ares.

What happened to him?

The only time I like Ares is when he helps Aphrodite get off the chariot, but the moment he speaks I have to fight the urge to box him myself.

They said he's being a jerk to Heron because the lost of his parents affected him but I see NO SENSE OF MOURNING IN HIM. He's only being mean for the sake of being a mean bully.

Everyone who are mad at Ares in SS2 like me, you should read The Ungilded Version, it's a continuation fanfic of season 1 on AO3. Ares didn't get along with Heron in this fic, but how he shows his grudges is more reasonable and in-character. AND HE HAS HIS GOLDEN MOMENTS WITH HIS FAMILY AND FOLLOWERS TO BALANCE OUT HIS AGRESSIVE SIDE TOO!!!

The BOZ producer WISH they can write a complex Ares like that.

Also, don't think I forget Demeter. Her cameo may be brief but I'm still sour at what they made her into.

And Hera too, but I guess in a lesser extend because Zeus' death have really impacted her. Still miss her ruthless side tho.

Oh, and Heron is going on a suicide mission. He knows he's gonna die so he wants to die both like a dumbass and badass. But I do have critique with his fight with Ares. THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN HE CAN PUNCH ARES BLEEDING???

Diomedes managed to cut Ares and Aphrodite in the Iliad because he's a seasoned warrior with Athena on his side. Heron got powered up once and somehow he can box Ares??? A demigod against a god???

And when I thought the producer is finally realistic and didn't make him beat Ares, the Gary Stu nonsense came back with Zeus giving him the ring.

"But he saved the world he deserves the prize--" DID ZEUS' OTHER CHILDREN NOT AID THE DEFEAT OF THE GIANTS??? HERON JUMPED IN AND MAKE THE FINAL SHOW DOWN AND HE'S GOING TO DIE ANYWAYS!!!

Zeus' final speech. Finally he has some end-of-life remorse. I'll let someone else talk about it because my brain isn't programed to analyze something like that.

My overall thoughts / opinions on BOZ Season 2

Spoilers ahead

Things I liked:

Character designs: (Especially for) Gaia, Persephone, HEKATE, the Sphinx - etc. An honorable mention is Artemis and her bow's design

Seeing characters with more screen time since the last season: Athena, Aphrodite, Demeter, Artemis - I'm sure I'm forgetting more. Demeter is part of the story, there's a few cool scenes with Athena, and we actually get dialogue from Aphrodite and Artemis. Not much, but some.

The plot / story: How they expressed what Hades and his family have to endure with Persephone leaving every six months

Seeing characters I honestly never thought I'd see: Cronus, Rhea, THE KOURETES, Hestia and again HEKATE

Hestia just being a badass

Seeing Hades' and Persephone's children

How Hades and Persephone meet / develop feelings for each other

More details to Seraphim's past / was not expecting to see him ever having a love interest

A better depiction of Hera

Seeing scenes of Zeus' birth and his early years of life. Zeus' early myths are some of my favorites. I loved seeing baby Zeus and the Kouretes this season. I could honestly just watch this show accurately depict the myths and be happy.

I will mention her again: Hekate. Her design, her role, her inclusion in general. Hekate just being present at Zeus' birth made me happy since theres a myth of Hekate being the one to offer the stone to Cronus to devour in place of Zeus. Also making the rocks actually resemble a baby's sound and movement makes Cronus look less silly.

We barely see Apollo, Hermes, Poseidon, and Hera. I understand why not so much of Poseison and Hera, and I'm glad Hades had a bigger role this season, but I think I just love Hermes and Apollo so much that I expected to see more of them.

Another honorable mention: Seeing the Amazons

Finally, the ending. I really liked what they did there.

Things I didn't care for:

Making Demeter a villain, basically. This was one of those things I had to try not let bother me more than it would have, much like how Hera being the villain last season bothered me. It's one of those times I have to remind myself this is just for entertainment purposes.

Calling Hekate a witch: Look, I get it. Not a big thing. It gives her more depth and we only know so much of Hekate before she started to get linked with magic.

Was it just me or did this season go by quick? I think both seasons have 8 episodes so I don't know why it felt like this season just went by so fast but it did.

Those things slightly bothered me, the list below really bothered me.

Ares. You know what I'm talking about.

Watching the Keres eating.

The worse for me was, what's he called... the tree bender? Did I really have to see him kill a man that way? Did he really have to fucking kill Gorgo? I'm aware this show is made by the same team behind Castlevania and I don't do gore well.

Overall happy with this season and am so happy they made a new season. I read that they have enough material for 5 seasons. Let's hope!

PS. Ima say that Olympians earn their epitaphs from the Fates, after which they undergo some sort of physical transformation usually

Ares w/ a child dubbed the god of pacifism

He raised you to be well versed in all weapons and the art of war

Like legit the gods all remember Ares' little toddler running around with a battle axe

When the day came for you to be rewarded your epitaph, Ares was waiting right outside the door to the fates' sanctum

He's expecting your epitaph to be god of bloodlust or god of weaponry or something

So when you came out with a pair of wings on your back and dressed completely in grey, he's super confused

"So... what's all this?"

Definitely broods for a solid month when he's told

Complains to Hera cuz this man is a mama's boy through and through

"Well what else did you expect? They're always breaking up your fights with your brothers!"

Hera is so proud of her grandchild

Zeus is also very happy but more because of how pissed off Ares was about it

Ares debates fighting the fates over it

Eventually is sat down to have a talk

You explain to him that so many wars are over ego and so many people needlessly die and honestly you hate that

Ares can't quite relate because his power grows with war, but eventually he comes around

Apollo and Hermes definitely tease him about it though

"Oh, he brought out the war hammer! Someone call (Y/N)!"

Hermes w/ a child dubbed the god of respite

He was expecting something in this ballpark honestly

When you were very young he asked Hephaestus to fashion you your own Talaria (winged sandals)

You barely used them

Around Olympus you often were a calming presence

Convincing Dionysus to take a nap instead of rope all the gods into another crazy wine-fueled scheme

Convincing Zeus to spend quality time with Hera instead of going to the mortal realm (somehow you always knew when he was having the urge)

It was telling enough that your villa on Olympus was packed full of soft blankets and pillows from all over

Was slightly nervous when you went to the fates for your epitaph

Dionysus eventually slipped him some wine because this man was wearing a literal track into the stone with his pacing

You come out dressed in the most comfortable robe he's ever seen, no shoes on your feet, and your hair is suddenly dragging behind you

When he's told he... isn't sure how to feel

He loves you and wants to spend time with you

But also he gets so restless

You find a compromise eventually when it comes to spending time together

You switch between active days and rest days, which you encourage all of Olympus to do

A power that comes with being the god of respite is healing

Which means Ares and Athena come to you quite a lot after a good spar

You have your hands full trying to get a couple of the gods to take a break

You use your Talaria to sweep them away for some rest

Athena w/ a child dubbed the god of spontaneity

Has spent your whole life trying to get you to think things through

Is super frustrated that despite your lack of planning, things always seem to work out

You get along very well with Dionysus which she hates

She had you sit with her for one meeting with other major gods

Kicked you out halfway through because you have no head for strategy

When you went to the fates to get your epitaph she literally had a diagram (that was a pre-version of one of those cork boards with the red string all over them) with all the possibilities of what your epitaph would be

God of Spontaneity was on the list, and actually pretty high up

As such, she wasn't surprised when you came out in one of the oddest put-together outfits she had ever seen with your hair sticking every which way

Sits down and talks to you about things immediately

You explain to her that even with all the strategies she could ever come up with, unexpected events require spontaneous responses

Something goes wrong in Hephaestus' forge that nobody expected, including him, but you were able to walk right in and fix it no fuss

You become the fixer for when time is tight and unforeseen circumstances require something to be done

After a couple years Athena learns to be proud of you, you've done so much for Olympus, after all

Let me scream right off the bat because Queen Demeter is slaying in episode 6. I love my queen <333

Also, Demeter and Hades teaming up for Persephone and revenging the gods who wronged them? It's unexpected but understandable. They both love Persephone and cannot share her in peace, so they will rule together and all have their time with her. The scene tries to make Demeter look like a pestering mother-in-law but I'm all rooting for her. Her voice and sinisterness is sooooo good like YES MOMMY PLEASE BURY ME 😍😍😍

Okay, now let's talk about Heron. I love that he doesn't forgive the villagers who mistreated his mother but still have sympathy for the innocent women and children. If they made him forgive them easily I would scream but turns out no, BOZ did good with this one.

Heron powering up last minute to beat the Keres is cliche but I'll let it slide because I have other matters to nitpick (also Alexia snapping Heron out of his lightning intoxication reminds me of Katara calming Aang down from his Avatar state). And Heron threatening the last Keres? Gary Stu but still badass AF. Home boy is not letting people stepping on him anymore but he still cares for the people.

I know everyone finds him boring but I feel really bad for Heron in here. The pain of losing your dear mother drives you to want to die and join her again.

And Heron - Seraphim's reunion? Heart-warming and hear-breaking. They are similar and shared more pain than they would think.

"Only three things can cause the pain in his eyes. Love, war, and the gods. And he looks like he's had his fair share of all three."

This applies to both brothers actually. They lost their loved ones, they'd been through the war between the gods and the titans, and they were like the pawns of the gods.

The short moment Heron and Seraphim had together was golden. I love it.

Also why did they design Iris like one of the Christian angels???

No!!! Iris is one of the messengers of the Olympians, not the Primordials! She served as Hera's handmaiden!!!! WHY DIDN'T THEY LET HER BE HERA'S RIGHT-HAND WOMAN IN SEASON 1????

They kinda ruin my sister trio :( Persephone and Athena, to be exact.

Why do they have to make Persephone on bad blood with Athena??? They are childhood friends (in the myths) why do they talk like they have always been at each other's throat? Seriously, Persephone has a good relationship with most other gods, why does people always think she hates them???

I get that Athena always put Olympus first like Persephone loves the Underworld so they are tensed but it would have interesting if they were torn between their duty and their friendship. But it's a me thing.

Ah, I'm getting a bit ahead of myself there. We haven't talked about Demeter trying to poison the earth yet.

I know TOO WELL the producer is trying to make Demeter the bigger bad so Hades will look better in comparison. Hades even tries to protest her evil scheme (but that will only shows his hypocrisy in the last episode, we'll get there later)

I'm mad that BOZ paints Demeter in a bad light. But you know what?

At this point, fuck it.

I will root for her even as a big bad villain. I will support Queen Demeter's right and wrong. If Hera and Seraphim almost destroys the world and y'all still love them, I will love my queen even when she tries to poison the world.

Yeah, Heron and the gang meet them when fighting Talos. Nice nod to the mythical robot and the hydra, though the latter serves little purpose other than a little inconvenience.

But at least we have some back story of Alexia! Her moment with her aunt is brief but very touching :DDD

And it's really nice to show how the world is going upside down when Zeus the god of order is now gone. Though I really wish they would display his role as keeper of order more in SS1.
