A new fun little project - info

So, where do I start?

I was listening to some Digimon soundtrack recently. And I suddenly had the urge to start something fun. It might require a little info beforehand, so here we go.

Starting this weekend (CET), I will post each weekend one of my favourite anime songs of all time. A "My favourite anime song of the week". I say songs, but it will include instrumental pieces as well and also stuff like character songs and themes that were not used as soundtrack. Which is why I didn't choose the word soundtrack. I will also include a short text on why it's one of my favs or some such stuff.

I will further include songs which I really like even though I never watched the series itself/watched it only partially or am just not that big a fan of it.

Also, I might post two instead of one if either I am too impatient (the list isn't going to be short) or if two pieces fit together anyways.

Since I live in a German-speaking country, I will do it this way: For those songs that have a German version, I will post that as well as the original Japanese one. Sigh... where are the good old times when the songs actually had German versions? To be frank, the melodies are usually the same, just with a German text. We didn't do it like the Americans and just did our own stuff (which, unfortunately, turned out way much uglier than the original Japanese - I shudder at the thought of the American Digimon opening). Still, I post both the German and Japanese versions so you can compare. Since tastes are different, the songs will always sound better in one language than the other.

I hope that some of you guys will accompany me on this journey, the occasional dose of pure nostalgia and flashbacks to childhood. n.n Feel free to chat me up in the comments too, I'd love to exchange some thoughts about the songs.

any time i fall into a depressive episode i have the devastating urge to rewatch fullmetal alchemist, and the october 3rd memes also gave me the urge again. so instead of rewatching, i did something i've been wanting to do for a long time instead - looked up the sheet music for parts of the score to learn on the violin. i'm DECENT on the violin but not the best, so i thought resembool's lullaby would be relatively easy to learn with a bit of practice. i went to sight read it, and despite listening to it constantly, realized quite quickly how it was deceptively way more difficult than i thought. it has a lot of double stops, AKA when you have to play two notes on two different strings at the same time, and getting them to sound good requires a good amount of technique.

there's the basic melody that pretty much anybody could hum, but the texture between and on top of the main melody that makes it special is the hard part. after seeing 800 memes about october third "fail to resurrect your mom and burn your house" day, i realized that the song itself about the elric brothers' home represents the deceptive nature of the taboo they tried to enact. resembool's lullaby, the musical motif that runs through all their travels and follows them just like the horror they experienced after what they did as kids, consists of a few basic, easy to acquire melodic "ingredients", just like the material ingredients edward lists off that physically make up the human body. it is only when attempting to play the theme, just like the boys' attempt at human transmutation, that you realize the extra spark that makes the song come alive, just like a human being, can't be done without a cost. in the song, obviously it is technique and practice, and for human transmutation, it is a soul, which can only be gotten at a price.

this theme shows up a lot in fullmetal alchemist brotherhood - often with a choir, or an orchestral arrangement, but not always the solo violin. the solo violin, though, still has these incredibly difficult chords you have to play the whole time. the most BASIC form of this motif and this theme HAS to have two notes played at the same time through most of it, just like how the elric brothers cannot be apart from each other. the story, the lullaby, their fates, it's always about the two of them, no matter the cost, even in how the music is played.

EDIT: also, the FIRST version on the OST is Lullaby of Resembool, which is played by solo cello, I believe. While the LAST version on the THIRD VOLUME OST is Resembool's Lullaby, which is the solo violin version with the double stops. The themes show up everywhere, but if the solo cello version shows up in the first season and the solo violin version shows up in the last, it resembles how Edward felt alone in trying to get his brother's body back at the beginning, and how at the end they are completely reunited again, even though they shared the same melody, the same story and struggle, the whole time.

Thanks for answering my ask before. If you don't mind me asking (again), can I ask, what are your top 10 (or top 7) favorite media (can be books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series)? Why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before......

they're all fictional stories but i perceive ones that come with a visual element (manga/moving picture) and ones that lack it (books) in very different ways so i cannot really mix them since they fulfill different roles

top 10 anime/manga

golden kamuy (manga), there's nothing else like it and it excels in both story and character writing, with good and polished visuals. it took tremendous effort to create and it paid off... one in a million work

fullmetal alchemist, it's been around since forever there's not much i can say at this point. the golden standard really

saraiya goyou, phenomenal ost, pleasant story, unique visuals, overall a favorite work of mine due to its production and atmosphere. very slept on but it's ok... watching it is like chewing kinoko mochi

shouwa genroku rakugo shinjuu, has its faults but it's undeniably a masterpiece. great story, good visuals, good character writing, good ost

berserk (up to golden age arc only), again it's ancient so i don't really have much to say. it's a classic for a reason

hoozuki no reitetsu, it's everything a comedy needs to be. funny and enjoyable but has its own twist on what it's trying to present, and the setting is rather uncommon. very pleasant visually, fun character designs. also slept on but ig it's a west issue bc it was popular in jp at its peak

shigurui, very edgy and #problematic but i enjoyed it a lot. it's very atmospherically heavy but i love the kind of drama it engages and i love the pacing & the kabuki-esque mood

trigun (og anime), a childhood favorite of mine i don't have much to say i just love it a lot because it made me sad

michiko to hatchin, it's a good story and very enjoyable. setting unusual for an anime. feels like watching an action movie...

dorohedoro, it's just very fun and pleasant it's a good watch. very likeable characters

books

ningen shikkaku by dazai osamu, i don't have much to say it's been obscenely popular with emo losers since forever. i read it at 16 for the first time and was like wow this is really the i'm a creep i'm a weirdo manifesto #relatable #letsjumptherope

of human bondage by somerset maugham, it's a long boring book and i read it in my teens too but i just love it... the journey of going through mc's life since childhood into late adulthood is just so charming i like this kind of stuff

all quiet on the western front by erich maria remarque, i like war stories and it's a sad read

i forgor the rest 😭 there's a lot of books i read and many i liked but they usually don't really stay with me at all it's more of a 👍👎 thing

for movies i only like park chan-wook's vengeance trilogy + the handmaiden i don't really go there. and i don't watch tv shows

I'm subscribed to the Trigun archive and it's crazy to me just how fast people went and complained about Stampede. Like, wow, you guys just didn't actually want new content you just wanted the same but doubled and it shows.

Some of the complaints were "it's CGI so it's bad", I understand the fear, but if anyone could pull it off it was studio Orange. And pull it off they did. It's beautiful.

Others were "they didn't bring back Tsuneo Imahori for the OST", sorry my dude but the idea of a remake is to separate itself from the previous versions of the work, Re-Make, right? So from scratch. If you were a Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood fan and complained about "Braja" not being there it wouldn't make any more sense.

Also a crazy amount of complaining was just OG anime fans who had no idea they complained about 98 exclusive content not being there. Re-Make, again.

I've never been a fan of 1-on-1 anime adaptations, they always tend to be lackluster, so I really don't get it when people complain about something they haven't seen yet because it doesn't look enough like what they wanted. At that point they were just looking at teasers and trailers too! Ep 1 was not even out and already someone was saying Vash's scars were fucked because they thought they saw some of it on a poster and it wasn't enough.

Also the character designs. Omg the character designs. I've seen complaints about Wolfwood when he had yet to make any sort of appearance. And of course Vash looks like a fuckboy, and so he isn't Vash at all. And of course his coat not being the same shape is a heresy. And of course, and of course,...

Ah and of course Milly isn't there. Well you didn't see the complain yet but now that the show's out it's still one of the biggest one. Well she will be. Patience is a virtue and all that.

Ah, sorry, I ended up rambling and being mean, but it does annoy me how little people are really willing to explore when it comes to stuff they enjoy. Has to be one way, another would be betrayal.

Well as someone who liked Stampede better than 98, hope you guys ended up coming back with a more open mind, because I had a great time, and it made me want to read the manga and now I very much am a fan.
