He felt a little sting in his heart because he couldn’t be there to watch his first steps but seeing Gabriel smiling ear to ear and greeting him made him feel much better. “Come here my love,” Miguel would say he crouched down with his arms spread out he would scoop up Gabriel, and smother him in kisses.

Miguel slowly gets up as you sit up as well. “Go back to sleep Cariño[honey] I got it,” Miguel would whisper softly giving your head a soft pat.

You would peep into Gabriel’s room to see him and Miguel cuddled up on his Lightning McQueen bed. Miguel's body being far too big for the bed making you laugh to yourself hearing his soft snores.

He would plan a family costume for Halloween. Gabriel liked Legos? Miguel would randomly come home with a Lego Death Star for them to build.

boydad!miguel o'hara who was always so protective of Gabriel when the two of you found out he was allergic to peanuts. He always checked everything before he ate them. The two of you also wiped all peanut products out of the house. Miguel always has his Epi pen wherever they go.

boydad!miguel o'hara who helped Gabriel make his first crush a Valentine. He went out late at night and got candy and arts and crafts supplies so they could make a handmade card for his crush. “What if she doesn’t like me back?" Gabriel asked worriedly. "How could she not like you back? You’re a nice boy and you look just like your mother, which makes you the most handsome boy in the world because your mom is the most beautiful in the world, he explained giving Gabriel a pat on the back as he left for school.

boydad!miguel o'hara who always went to his son's events and supported him whether it be his baseball games or the musicals that he was in. Miguel took time to practice with him in your front yard and took you Gabriel to see your favorite productions on Broadway. Miguel was convinced Gabriel would be a famous musical theater actor.

boydad!miguel o'hara who would document Gabriel's life from his first "Dada" to his first baseball game, all the way to his first musical, the time he came out to his family, and his wedding where he married his awesome husband.

Nothing made Miguel happier than the fact that Gabriel felt comfortable coming out to the two of you as his parents. He felt the most accomplished as a father knowing that his son felt like he could tell him anything.

Oh boy, you're gonna wish you'd never asked 😆 Long post ahead

🎧 Vlad is a huge fan of 80s synth-pop and new wave. Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Smiths, Duran Duran, Tears For Fears, Pet Shop Boys, a-ha, and New Order, to name just a few.

🎵 On a similar (quarter) note, music from the late 70s and early 80s is still difficult for him to listen to because it reminds him of the years he was pining for Maddie, the accident, and being hospitalized. Mid-80s music and beyond, when he began to take his life back and build his wealth and power, is his "good old days" music.

🎹 Another music headcanon: In Familiar, I hinted at Vlad being a pianist. I think he'd look pretty hot playing a saxophone, maybe even a trumpet. And Martin Mull is a pretty good guitarist and singer, so Vlad also having those talents would be really cool. But I like to believe that Vlad plays the geekiest, dorkiest, nerdiest, most Slav-coded instrument of all: the accordion. Just imagine him torturing Danny and Sam and Tucker with polka music and ballads about cheese while on a camping trip. Maybe Wulf howling in agony from somewhere in the woods.

🧀 Yeah, he’s basically the negaverse equivalent of Weird Al.

👂 Vlad got his ear pierced in the mid-90s.

🔥 Despite being a fire specter ("having a fire core", to use the phandom terms), Vlad loves the cold. Winter is his favorite season, Christmas his favorite holiday. A bit of a spoiler for either chapter 13 or 14 of Familiar: Vlad is a superb ice skater.

💔 Besides his mother, Maddie was the only woman Vlad ever loved.

🐄 Vlad grew up the son of a poor Wisconsin dairy farmer. His mother was a first-generation Romanian* immigrant. He was the first member of his family to go to college, and on a full scholarship. He has no siblings. (*I may adapt Vlad’s nationality depending upon the story/art/situation, but generally I like to HC him as Romanian, which you can see on his backpack here in this AU.)

👊 Vlad was a victim of bullying in his teen years. Because of his first name and his ethnicity—not to mention his appearance and disposition: skinny, gangly, "ugly", shy, nerdy, poor—Halloween was always a miserable time for him: getting pelted with plastic vampire fangs in the hallways at school; cruel nicknames like "Count Vladislob" or "Vladis-louse"; racist remarks about his Romani mother; "Bleh bleh! I vant to suck your bluud!" It was awful.

✌️ Because he spent so many years being made to feel ashamed of his unusual name, when he became rich and successful after obtaining his ghost powers, he put his name and initial everywhere. V for Vlad.

🏈 Vlad got his love of Green Bay from his father. Apart from a shared surname, it was one of the only two (2) things he and his dad had in common.

🔧 Working on farm machinery like tractors and hay balers was the other. Vlad and his dad would often fix the farm equipment themselves rather than hire a mechanic—mostly out of necessity. Vlad is still pretty good with a monkey wrench, though in college his focus shifted from engineering to physics after meeting Jack and Maddie.

🚀 Vlad grew up in the sixties. Space race, the moon landing, the Cold War. Every kid his age had space fever. Vlad was no exception. His bedroom walls were a collage of stars, rockets, shuttles, astronauts, and cosmonauts. Yuri Gagarin was his hero. He wanted to be an astronaut when he grew up. (Just like Danny.)

🩸 I mentioned this on another post, but I'll add it here, too: Vlad's obsession with gaining more power stems from the trauma and weakness he experienced when he was hospitalized. He made a vow to never be that helpless again.

🪦 Both of Vlad's parents were dead by the time he got out of the hospital. He was estranged from the rest of the Masters family and therefore had no one to turn to.

👶 Because of this, Vlad became obsessed with having a family of his own. Ironically, the accident sterilized him. He will never be able have biological children.

🍪 Some of Vlad’s happiest memories are baking with his mother. He had (and still does have) quite a sweet tooth—and a penchant for cooking.

Recently I’ve been thinking about a version of Baby Ducks AU where Chase is transmasc. House getting custody of 5 y/o Roberta Chase and immediately deciding he is not calling her that because that’s a grandmother’s name. He asks her if there’s a name she goes by. She says she doesn’t know. Her family just called her Roberta. House asks if there’s something she’d *like* to go by, and she’s not sure. She asks House why people call him House. House explains that it’s his last name and in his field of work, people are usually known by their last names. Roberta hears this and decides that if everyone can call House “House”, she’s going to go by her last name, Chase. House is happy to oblige.

House and Wilson noticing quickly that Chase prefers clothes that aren’t super feminine and has interests and hobbies that are more on the masculine side in comparison to Thirteen; very tomboy ish. (Not that Thirteen is a girly girl. I think she’d be pretty evenly split between feminine and masculine hobbies, interests, toys, etc in Baby Ducks AU). Chase gets put into soccer (insists on calling it by its proper name “football” even though Hilson explain Americans won’t understand that) and *loves it*. For Halloween, Chase and Thirteen propose to Hilson that they go as the Skywalker twins from Star Wars. Chase readily volunteers to be Luke. (Sometimes, Thirteen calls Chase “Luke”, even when they’re not playing Star Wars.)

After Halloween, Chase makes a comment about “I wish I could be a boy all the time, not just on Halloween”, and House and Wilson are immediately paying attention and wanting to know more (so they can help, of course). That’s the first time they consider that Chase might just be a boy instead of a girl who’s a tomboy. After exploring that with Chase, they very quickly find out that they have a daughter and a son, not two daughters.

(When Hilson & Chase explain the whole thing to Thirteen, she’s absolutely thrilled to have a brother because now they’re “JUST like Luke and Leia!!!”)

April 3, 2022.

It takes a good two months before a year starts to pick up for me. The first big win was in the final frigid day of February when I decided to take the train to Greenpoint’s Academy Annex for some records; the first stop of what would be an amazing record-store victory tour. Then arrived March. I drove four miles to the shopping mall to look for leather jackets when I discovered a new retro- video arcade opened up. Within a few days I walk in and spent the entire day re-living my Atari / Nintendo / SNES youth. Those eight hours were a thoroughly exhaustive one. I saw games which I threw many rolls of quarters into, to others I only read about and fantasized even seeing up until then. The original Super Mario Bros. cabinet, The Neo Geo MVS, Outrun, R-Type, Taito’s Superman, Atari’s Star Wars. Most of every great moment of my youth spent in delis, card stores, ice cream parlors, long-gone restaurants, and amusement parks were now all in one room.

Good thing I went because my all-time favorite ginger April* made a rare appearance in my store and I had to tell her about it. She came in to buy some A/V components like she always does and we spent a good ten minutes catching up on everything. April was a fangirl and a hardcore gamer of all formats so I had to share the wealth of news with her. Too late. She already went. Still, every visit from her counted as she was the cutest thing of pale skin, glasses, and Irish ancestry I ever seen.

I had another holiday spent with my Coney Island family. My aunt invited me to her daughter’s house in East Meadow for Easter where they, her aggressive right-wing country-music loving Trump supporter sons, her sister, and all the offspring you could think of would be there. A great four hours were had coloring eggs, watching Disney’s Encanto on the big screen, and an endless feast of Italian food were laid out for all to gorge ourselves to death. Blessings were counted and they were enough to cash them in for a bright sunny Sunday. I also enjoyed the hour-long drive from East Meadow through Rt. 27 all the way home.

In between all this was a major event I was chasing for a while. It would be nice to attend a Boy Harsher show and they’ve been making the rounds in New York City quite often. I jumped at the opportunity to purchase tickets after their Halloween show and ultimately got them - only for January show to be postponed. Blame the COVID- omicron for it. But Jae & Augustus pushed it back to April and this time nothing was stopping them from performing nor anyone attending The Music Hall Of Williamsburg.

I learned that it was a two-hour ride each way from my line to Penn Station and back due to transfers at the Jamaica Station. Not good as I had to work a 10AM shift. This time, I opted to drive out to the Babylon stop for a direct line to Manhattan and back for fifty-five minutes each. I went up the stairs and waited only a few minutes before the train arrived on an elevated platform. Nothing special about the train ride on a cloudy mid-50* weather. The show, however, was a whole other story. Everyone enjoyed the opener Twin Tribes and the headlining Boy Harsher hands-down to great fanfare. I couldn’t have waited in line to get some merch- as, once again, someone had to ride home for tomorrow’s payday.

I reversed the path from The Music Hall- by taking the L and ½/3 line back to Penn Station. It just so happened that I missed my train home by three minutes and it cost me an hour more before the next one came in. As I mentioned before, no transfers. Just a direct line from Penn Station back to Babylon where the double-decker cars awaited us. A nice surprise for me sitting in the seats above to contemplate my next major win: Sacred Bones’ 15th anniversary show. It could only get better.

Fifteen years ago from this month, a new concept was born. I purchased a 30GB iPod Classic through a ‘friend’ of mine at WUSB. Since then, I loaded all of my music into it and took it through many train rides. The iPod Classic has retired in favor of my iPhone SE. What once became a distraction has now been an auditioning process for future Omega WUSB shows and seasonal personal playlists. Nothing is off limits. Noise, backpacker, jazz, fusion, shoegaze, noise rock, post-punk, electronics, hardcore - everything. Everything I discover gets played in hopes of either being featured or forever a part of me. With a near endless plethora of outlets, mutuals, and other ways of obtaining music, there’s almost never a moment of silence outside of work or sleep.

Enjax headcanons

(Featuring Wenvier because they're all my fav)

Lots of pet names. Mainly "babe".

Lots of PDA. At the beginning, Enid was the one who initiated the most and she thought she might come off as clingy so she stopped for a second. But then Ajax was like "did I do something? What about my cuddles?". Since then, he knows he can indulge in the PDA as well.

It's actually a whole new process for him because she's his first girlfriend and he's naturally guarded and used to be alone. At the beginning, he was afraid to be overwhelmed by the relationship. But on the contrary, and because Enid also gives him personal space when he needs to, their couple is natural and easy.

Enid's mom obviously doesn't like them together. It's not against Ajax because he didn't particularly give a bad impression when they met, but she just wants Enid to be with a werewolf. Her dad thinks he's a nice guy though.

On the other hand, Ajax's moms LOVE Enid. They're just so glad that there's someone to make their son happy and that he doesn't stay in the solitude gorgons tend to get used to.

Enid lives for Starbucks. Ajax, as the dutiful boyfriend he is, always gets her coffee. Pink Drink is her fav ofc.

Ajax could eat pizza every day at any hour of the day. For his birthday, Enid made a pizza cake for him and it was the best day of his life.

He's the one who takes pictures for her Insta.

Ajax often goes back to Greece for the holidays to see his family there. They have a beach house and he invited Enid over the summer before their senior year. They spent the most amazing week together, his family loved her and Enid was just so happy to work on her tan. Tons of Instagram pics ofc. It's also where and when they had sex for the first time.

Cliché but Ajax is a big Mamma Mia's fan. He knows all the songs. For his bachelor party, Xavier got Ajax's moms and his aunt to perform Super Trouper just like in the movie and he laughed for hours.

Enid's happy place is Disney World. Ajax surprised her by taking them (him, Enid, Wednesday and Xavier) there during their senior year. She was overexcited and smiled during the whole thip and Ajax was just glad to make his Disney princess happy. Enid and Ajax had the best time. Xavier was just glad for the Star Wars universe. Wednesday was miserable throughout the whole trip. (There's this hilarious picture of Wednesday with her usual resting bitch face and Minnie Mouse ears Enid forced her to wear. Everyone always cracks up when they see this pic.)

Enid totally convinced him to dress up as Rapunzel and Flynn Ryder for Halloween.

In terms of jealousy, Enid will not hesitate to get her claws out when some girl tries to make a move on her man. For the longest time, Ajax thought that he wasn't the jealous type but that was until his older brother started to hit on Enid every time he saw her (I headcanon that he has a brother named Hector, I read it in a fanfic and I thought the Greek mythology reference was hilarious). It's meant to be as a joke but since he has some younger sibling complex with his brother who likes to rile him up, he's always so angry about it. Although Enid found his jealousy cute, she knows how complicated his relationship with his brother is and ended up making fun of Hector, saying he didn't stand a chance and that Ajax was way better anyway. Ajax always smiles smugly when he remembers Hector's gaping face.

Might break up for a while after they graduate because of differences: pressure on Enid from her family because she should have a werewolf mate, different goals and projects etc. Would definitely find their way back to each other a few years later thanks to Wednesday and Xavier making them realize they cannot live without the other.

Will get married and have at least 4 kids because Enid has always wanted a big pack.

They're the godparents of Ravenna, Wednesday and Xavier's only daughter.

Chapter #6

Summary:

“So, I’ll text you my address…” Stiles says trailing off as he takes a step back, not taking his eyes off Derek. Derek also takes a step back. “I’ll come pick you up and…” Stiles smiles. “We’ll go out for dinner and…” “And…” They both are even more red now, but their smiles haven’t waned a bit. “Hurry up, Daddy! You gotta go get even more beautiful!”

Sunday starts off the same way but with more teasing from the team and Stiles is sure they’re having a competition to see who can make him turn the reddest. He’s just glad that Olivia didn’t hear them. She’s his priority always, first and foremost. She is with Aria, a friend from school, today but will be dropped off in the afternoon.

Erica and Stiles set up the schedule for the day and she puts Stiles on shift lead which he’s more than fine with. He loves going up on the courses and doing safety briefs but sometimes it’s nice to stay inside for a while.

It’s around lunchtime and Stiles is down at course five and six, when Erica radios about needing Stiles to take his break. “No one likes a hangry Alpha, Alpha.”

Stiles rolls his eyes but radios back. “On my way, Catwoman.” He playfully shoves Jackson before making his way up the hill, following the path up to the cabin and heading into the den where he plops down onto a chair and starts chugging his water.

Erica peeks her head in and snorts. “I mean I knew you were thirsty because I heard how you looked at Derek but you gotta eat too, Batman.” She easily dodges the empty water bottle he throws at her and cackles.

It’s while he’s on his lunch break that he sees Derek again. They don’t speak and Derek doesn’t see him, but Stiles sees Derek’s bracelet indicating he’s there for the adult course. Stiles’s heart beats faster and he hurries into the cabin. “Hey Catwoman?” he says with an extra sweet tone.

“Yes Batman?” she replies in an equally sweet tone.

“Can I take Der—I mean that group?”

She smirks, giving him a knowing look and signs off on the switch. Kira is more than happy to switch with him.

Despite the fact they’re on vacation Derek decides to return on Sunday and though Stiles remains professional his heart speeds up. Though it doesn't look like Derek’s son, Zeke is there today. Derek wants to go through the adult course which Stiles is hesitant about but it’s not his decision. He does keep a sharp watch on Derek though.

He hears cheers at the end of the zipline for course two and can’t help but grin seeing that Derek’s son is holding up signs to cheer his daddy on as a younger woman, who must be the aunt, watches him protectively.

He can’t help but overhear the woman as she pesters Derek. “So? Anything?”

Derek’s ears twinge pink again and he gives a one shoulder shrug. “Well, he’s keeping a close watch on me but that doesn’t mean anything. I probably just look terrified and he’s just doing his job.”

Zeke speaks up next. “No. Daddy, that's not true. When I talked to Mr. Stiles, he promised to watch over you too and that if you got hurt, he would come save you too.”

Stiles quickly averts his gaze when Derek looks over at him. “I know kiddo. Shall we head to the next one?”

Cora notices her brother’s disappointment but also sees the way the instructor looks at her twin. “Yeah. We still have courses three, four, five and six left.”

Stiles waits for Derek to start the next course before sighing wistfully. “He’s right, Derek. It’s not true.”

Aria’s mom, Karlie drops off Olivia around 2 pm. Stiles heads up the hill to the cabin to greet her. “Hey, angel,” he says with a smile. “Did you have fun?”

Olivia grins and hugs him tightly as she nods, her pigtails bouncing up and down with her head. “Yes! Lots of fun. I got Aria to try watching Star Wars. Now she can do Halloween with us too! She wants to be Padmé Amidala. I told her you could help with the pretty dresses she wears and that you would do her hair.”

Stiles chuckles and nods at Karlie. “Thank you for watching her and bringing her here. I really appreciate it.”

Karlie smiles. “It’s my pleasure. I also may have been intrigued and decided to watch the movies along with them.”

Olivia giggles as Stiles scoops her up. “See, Daddy? More fans of Star Wars!”

“I see. Shall we head inside, cub?” he asks while tickling her sides.

“DADDY!!!” Olivia shrieks trying to get away from his tickles with a huge smile on her face as they bid Karlie goodbye. Stiles doesn’t notice the face that loses its smile as he watches.

Derek watches as Stiles picks up a girl who is probably seven or eight years old and it makes him smile. He has a thing for guys who are good with kids. He has been going over and over the question he wants to ask Stiles because really, what’s the harm in asking him out? However, when he sees the woman standing with Stiles, he feels his gut churn and clench as the smile slips off his face and a scowl forms.

Cora finds him a few minutes later. “So? What did he say?”

Derek glares at her. “He didn’t say anything because I didn’t ask.”

“WHAT?!” she snaps. “Why not?” she asks, lowering her voice.

“Because he has a girlfriend. Maybe a wife. I mean I haven’t seen a ring but it’s not like he would wear it while working considering he has to use his hands a lot.”

Cora’s brows furrow in confusion. “Why do you think he has a significant other?”

Derek groans. “Because I just saw her. Okay? She’s got auburn hair and she’s gorgeous. I mean she’s not my type but for all I know Stiles is straighter than an arrow.”

“Not possible. Not with the way he looked at you, Der.”

Derek rolls his eyes.

“I’m serious! How can you be so sure they’re together?”

“There was a little girl with the woman who ran up to Stiles and called him daddy.”

“Oh. Well, that doesn’t mean that they’re together. Maybe she is a babysitter.”

Derek shrugs and looks over to where Stiles is talking with his daughter, both of them wearing smiles and talking animatedly. “Maybe but it doesn’t matter. Let’s just go.”

Cora crosses her arms, stares at her brother for a hot minute and then turns to go to the nearest instructor, who just so happens to be Jackson. “Excuse me?”

Jackson looks over and nods. “Yes?”

“I was wondering something.” She gestures to Derek who is still watching Stiles. “That guy there is my brother and he’s being all sulky because he’s pining over him,” she says, gesturing to Stiles. “However, despite my attempts to get him to just ask him out he has yet to do so. Then my pining brother sees a woman with him and has now decided they must be together.”

“I see,” Jackson drawls with a smirk. “So, you want to know whether Alpha is taken then huh?”

Cora blinks and then nods. “Yes? Assuming by Alpha, you mean him.” She points to Stiles again.

Jackson chuckles and crosses his arms. “Stiles is as single as can be. That’s his daughter with him right now and the woman is Karlie. She was babysitting Olivia, his daughter, today and just dropped her off. Karlie’s daughter, Aria, is one of Olivia’s classmates.”

Cora’s face lights up and a mischievous grin forms on her face. “So that’s a yes then?”

“That’s a yes. Tell him to ask. Alpha is totally smitten.” Jackson then turns back to the courses, his eyes following a couple of teenagers who have been rowdy.

“Excellent,” Cora says, rubbing her hands together in the way a cartoon villain might before marching back over to her brother. “Der-Bear?”

Derek startles, his face flushing deep red. “I wasn’t staring.”

Cora snorts. “And I’m the Queen of England. You have five seconds to go ask him out or I swear to all hell I’ll shave your eyebrows off. Again.”

“You don’t have the manners of a lady let alone a queen.”

“Derek Spencer Hale! For Peter’s sakes ask the man out!”

She gives him a shove and Derek stumbles but rights himself before he faceplants. The whole thing does catch Stiles’s attention though which moves the red flush from Derek’s cheeks to the tips of his ears. “Hi?’

Stiles tilts his head and gives him a smile. “Hey,” he replies.

Olivia squints her eyes. “Who is he, Daddy?’

“Oh, this is Derek.”

Derek gives a little wave. “Hello.” He wonders to himself how in the world he’s supposed to ask the man out in front of his daughter. That doesn’t seem like a very smart thing to do.

Olivia gasps. “Oh my gosh! You’re Derek? I’m Olivia! Daddy told me about you and said that you were the best wolf the entire day on Friday.”

Stiles’s cheeks darken and he glances at Derek. “Yeah. Well, it’s true.”

“Thanks.”

Erica is watching this painful conversation for less than a minute before she pops her head outside. “Hey, Mini A! Come help me with the wristbands?”

“Oooo. Can I daddy please?”

Stiles breathes out in relief and sets her down tugging her pigtail gently. “Go for it.” He watches her run into the cabin and adjusts his radio. He starts chewing his lip before glancing at Derek again. “So, you came back?”

Derek nods. “Yeah.”

“Had fun then I guess.”

“Yes.”

“Man of few words I see.”

Derek nods and then rubs a hand down his face. “Most of the time but not always. Sorry just—” he stops and takes a deep breath. “Do you have a minute?”

Stiles opens his mouth but Erica interrupts. “He has thirty of them.”

Their gazes snap to the cabin window where they see her wave before looking back at each other. “What she said.”

“Good. I—There’s—I wanted to—Can I ask you something?”

Stiles quirks a brow. “You just did.”

Derek smiles. “Touche. I have a question I want to ask you.”

“Shoot,” Stiles says, cocking his hip to the side with his arms crossed, his body relaxed.

Derek takes a minute to just admire the man before him. He’s strong. He’s authoritative. He’s fucking gorgeous and he’s—“Would you go to dinner with me?” he blurts out.

Stiles’s eyes widen, making him look so much like Bambi and his mouth drops open. Derek starts cursing Cora in his head. It takes Stiles a minute to answer because he’s so surprised but then a huge grin breaks out on his face even as he gets more and more flushed. “Yes.”

“Yes? You’re saying yes? You’ll go to dinner with me?”

Stiles nods looking like a bobblehead. “Yeah. Yes. I—That—Please.”

Derek’s stomach feels full of butterflies, and he smiles, revealing the most adorable bunny teeth Stiles has ever seen. “Wow. I can’t believe you said yes. I’m—I was—I can’t wait. When are you free?”

Once again Erica jumps in before Stiles can. “He’s free tonight. If he says he’s not he’s being a naughty Alpha.”

Stiles glares at her. “I have Oliv—”

“She’s coming home with me and Boyd.”

Olivia peeks her head out and smiles. “Erica is gonna make mac n cheese, with creamed corn and hot dogs. Boyd is gonna make cookies and he said he’d show me how he makes a wooden wolf!”

Erica smirks at him with a ‘You’re welcome’ expression and Stiles relaxes. Knowing Olivia is going to be looked after makes it easier to agree.

Isaac jogs over and smiles. “We got the closing stuff handled, Alpha. I bet if you leave now you can get in a shower, get changed and head out in plenty of time.”

Stiles is overwhelmed and a bit fondly annoyed with his pack. He looks at Derek. “Sorry they tend to do that sometimes.”

Derek hasn’t stopped grinning. “I don’t mind. I’m still stuck on the fact that you said yes.” He pulls out his phone. “I have to let Cora know that—”

“Cora knows and has already taken the liberty of booking a hotel suite for Zeke and myself,” Cora interrupts as she sends a wink Derek’s way, making him blush.

Stiles chokes on the water he was drinking. “Little presumptuous there, don’t you think?” he says, staring at Cora.

Derek looks at him apologetically and feels embarrassment churning in his stomach. “Just ignore her please?”

Erica cackles. “Like we all don’t sense the UST between you but there’s no pressure, Batman.” Stiles looks at her to see a soft smile on her face. “Just go have fun. Okay?”

He smiles softly at her. “Okay.”

Derek smiles and gestures to his car. “I’m gonna go get ready and I can come pick you up if you want. Then I can drive us?”

Stiles nods. “Sure. I have to hang my gear up and then I’ll head home to get ready. I can give you my address.”

“You need to exchange numbers with him first, Daddy!!” Olivia calls out.

“Ah. Yeah. I knew that,” he mumbles, his skin a pretty shade of pink that Derek wants to nip at. They exchange phones, input their numbers and trade them back.

“So, I’ll text you my address…” Stiles says trailing off as he takes a step back, not taking his eyes off Derek.

Derek also takes a step back. “I’ll come pick you up and…”

Stiles smiles. “We’ll go out for dinner and…”

“And…”

They both are even more red now, but their smiles haven’t waned a bit.

“Hurry up, Daddy! You gotta go get even more beautiful!”

Stiles and Derek startle, having gotten lost in their own little world. They exchange adorably awkward waves before turning to go. Derek rushes to his car, glad he and Cora drove separately and heads to their hotel to get ready. Stiles hurries into the cabin, a bundle of excitement and nerves coursing through him.

Once he’s got his things, he kisses his daughter’s forehead. “I love you, angel.”

She smiles and hugs him. “Love you too, Daddy. Have fun with Mr. Derek!”

Stiles makes his way to his jeep, grinning like a loon and laughs at the howls that sound behind him as he pulls out of the parking lot.

1. Windows of the soul, you should have knocked the door

Anakin stared at the costume on his bed. He was still unsure about the whole ‘Halloween party at the office’ thing Aayla had dragged him into but he was new at his office and he didn’t want to be put into the party-killer box so soon into his work.

“I got a VISA all on my own.” He told himself. “How hard can this be?”

2. Kiss me softly, love me roughly

It all started with a pair of cuffs. As Obi-Wan returned from his meeting, he found them laying on the ground, abandoned. He stared at them from his spot at the entrance of the room. Were those Anakin’s? It was unlike his padawan to leave things out of place, much less actual Jedi tools.

3. A hundred and one universes - chapter 8

The war had only been over for a couple of months and the peace and recovery efforts were still going strong.

The Republic’s political sphere had been completely turned into chaos as the reality of Chancellor Palpatine’s true identity and his actual role in the war was revealed. For the first week after his death, the Jedi order had withdrawn into their temple. For too long they had been forced to fight and die into a now pointless conflict and their first step before going out and helping fix the galaxy was to begin healing themselves.

4. But goddamn, you got me in love again

The music was loud all around him, Anakin could almost feel the drums beating in his own skin. The low, colourful lights jumped from greens and blues to reds that were almost pink and yellows. People on the dance floor laughed, drank and danced, adding to the chaotic picture painted by the lights.

5. Viridian afternoon

“Is this really necessary?” Anakin asked, the sound of the bells tied to his curls jinggling as he turned to stare at the Radichet that was tying some see through fabric around his waist.

He had been sent by the Jedi council to take part in the ritual that took place every ten years on the planet Achicor. The Radichet, an alien species very similar to humanoids (Anakin had yet to figure out where they were different), dressed up and celebrated for a week, burning particular dishes and incense in the name of their main god: Obi-Wan.

6. Michi, michi, miau

As soon as Obi-Wan had taken a seat on the bus on his way home, it had begun to rain. Hard. He sighed, already dreading the short walk from the bus stop to his house, nevermind that he had his umbrella with him.

It had been a stressful day at work and he looked forward to finally putting on his slippers and drinking some warm tea. The beginning of spring, as it usually happened, had arrived with a chill and rain. Obi-Wan had taken to bringing his umbrella everywhere he went, at least when he saw the cloudy sky in the morning.

7. More than one lifetime

[Hyperspace. Coruscant to Lothal, 23BBY]

"Master," Anakin broke the kiss with a whine. He was sitting on his master's lap, his upper robes on the floor of the cockpit and his padawan braid tangled in his master's right hand. "Please…" He begged, before Obi-Wan tugged his braid and kissed him again.

8. The right path is not often the clearest one

The night Rin’s ghost appeared in his dreams, whatever plan Zetsu and Madara wanted Obito to follow became useless.

At first, he thought she was only a nightmare, the hole in her chest and a bit of blood falling from her lips a haunting sight. Obito broke down crying and hugged her, blaming Kakashi, babbling at her how he would avenge her and create the perfect world for her. But then Rin shook her head and smiled sadly. He couldn’t stand watching her sad so he turned away and then he woke up.

9. Morning star, guide me home

“Mom, look!” Lady Alhue turned around to find her son excitedly holding several items floating around his head. She smiled and put down the knife she was using to fully turn and crouch down so Anakin could get closer. “I’ve managed to lift three more things this time!” He was so bright, Darth Alhue couldn’t help but mourn the fact that he would soon have to be turned into the dark. It was the only option to keep him safe. She knew there were other Sith roaming around the galaxy, thirsty for power.

10. Simple comforts

The door opened and Obi-Wan stepped into the living room. Immediately he saw a lump of heavy blankets, Anakin’s seven year old sister buried in them, her cheeks flushed and lightly panting.

In front of her, the TV was playing an old movie, one of Anakin’s childhood favourites, as he had mentioned once or twice during the first dates they had. Obi-Wan smiled at the picture and moved further in.

What was Ethan & your MC’s favorite movie when they were kids? Do they have one now? Mostly because their kid/s watches it a million times a day & they swear they’re sick of it but in their minds they’re like ok this is pretty good actually.

Ethan is a quiet, closet Star Wars nerd in my HC (Tatum actually wore a Princess Leia costume at a Halloween party in med school and it drove him crazy). His father introduced him to the movies when he was young, and there is still something very comforting about them. He can't wait to introduce his son to the force.

Tatum wore her VHS copy of The Little Mermaid to shreds. She loved wearing a shirt over her head, pretending like it was Ariel's long, red hair while she sang loudly the tune that Ariel sings to Ursula. Tatum knew even back then that she had a thing for dark hair and crystal blue eyes.

I do have to point out... Before Cord was ever a twinkle in their eyes, the Ramseys babysat Gabriela "Gabi-Bug" Aveiros frequently... and she was addicted Frozen, thanks to Sienna introducing her to the movie. Tatum caught Ethan singing "Reindeer are Better than People" (complete with the different voices) while shaving one morning.

Baby Ramsey is more repetitious with books, which in the long-run, his parents are grateful for... but right now, he can't read, which means he needs Mommy or Daddy to help out. And when they're finished, you guessed it... "Again!"

When Cord shows interest in watching television, he usually wants to watch the National Geographic channel. He loves watching the veterinarian shows, which at first concerned Tatum because, well, should a 3-year-old be watching surgery? Ethan's response: *shrugs* why not?

When he starts attending pre-k, his interest really blossom including cartoons. lol

A Haunting in Venice (2023) Review

Still cannot get over this movie's first teaser trailer that was released which made it seem like some Conjuring spin-off and then right at the very end we see Poirot and his moustache appear. People who knew nothing about Kenneth Branagh's Poirot movies would have been so confused as to who that man was.

Plot: In post-World War II Venice, Poirot, now retired and living in his own exile, reluctantly attends a séance. But when one of the guests is murdered, it is up to the former detective to once again uncover the killer.

I do enjoy a solid murder mystery movie, yet with Kenneth Branagh's take on the famous Agatha Christie sleuth, up until now I feel his adaptations have been playing it too safe and in the process losing the excitement of the source material. It doesn't help that both Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile are based on the two most famous Poirot tales, as such the reveals in both weren't all that mysterious seeing as many people already knew what happens due to the books. However with this third outing, it seems Branagh may finally be finding his groove, as for starters this mystery is based on a lesser-known murder from the detective's adventures (a short book titled Hallowe'en Party), and more so the movie is not in fact a fully faithful adaptation of that story.

Both Christie's novel and A Haunting in Venice introduce us to a spooky Halloween-set mystery with multiple deaths and plot twists, as the famed detective tries to uncover the truth after being lured into the case by mystery writer Ariadne Olivier (played in the movie by Tina Fey). Yet there are not many similarities between the two stories. For one unlike the original novel which is set in the English countryside, the movie swaps that setting for the sinister Venezian palazzo. To be fair, Branagh evidently seems to be a fan of the 1973 occult-themed thriller Don't Look Now, as he tries to mimic that movie's style in portraying Venice as a place that has a sense of mystery and mystique in the air, with the ever-growing feel of dread and despair. That leads to the next point - the supernatural. Unlike the previous outings in these Poirot films, this one attempts to add something new to the murder mystery genre by adding a flair of horror into the mix. Set mostly at night, with creepy voices heard in the background and eerie imagery throughout, Branagh and cinematographer Haris Zambarloukus fill each scene with unsettling darkness, and there's even a shed of jump scares throughout. Also rain. Lots of rain, rain and rain. Visually this movie looks really good, and in fact, it is nice to see less use of CGI here compared to Death on the Nile where the green screen was basically the main star of the movie. The horror stuff didn't always work and I do believe the jump scares were a tad excessive and unnecessary, especially as the lighting and look of the movie already provided that needed sense of harrowing terror, but I do appreciate Branagh attempting to actually make something more original with his Poirot films.

Speaking of Branagh's Poirot, you can tell he absolutely adores playing this character, and to be fair he does a splendid job as always, with his lovely Belgian accent and adorable persona, so as always it was delightful seeing him chew up the scenery. The rest of the cast does well too. It's not as A-list as the previous films, but I think that was to the movie's benefit, for instead of focusing on the actors you actually can enjoy more connecting with the characters themselves. Tina Fey is out of her comfort zone by playing a more serious role compared to her known comedic performances. Michelle Yeoh is fantastic as the mystic psychic, and leaves an impression, especially during the séance scene where she completely loses herself in her 'possessed' madness'. Jude Hill, who's mainly known as the kid from Belfast, was great as the son of the doctor, as even though he's just a kid, he's very mature for his age and shows that he knows more than you'd expect, and Hill is great in delivering this and was one of the standouts.

The mystery itself is unfortunately pretty predictable. The journey to the reveal is solid, however, most of the resolutions are very easy to work out and I do wish there was a bigger plot twist than what we got, but overall I believe A Haunting in Venice is the best Poirot outing in Kenneth Branagh's trilogy, as it manages to finally find its own voice and take a risk of trying something different. It visually looks great (have I mentioned there is lots of rain??) Branagh's Poirot is adorable, but the narrative itself is a bit thin still. If there are more of these Poirot adventures made, I feel like Branagh should give directing duties to someone else, but still stay as the actor for Poirot, as from all three films the one thing that's always been a positive was his performance as the Belgian sleuth. But yes, this is a step in the right direction for this murder mystery franchise.

BACKGROUND:

Sage was born to Joseph and Amelia Rivera. Her father came from immigrant parents who came to America to provide a better life for their son. He took the opportunity they gave him and ended up being a very successful lawyer. Her mother, Amelia, is successful in her own right as one of the top data engineers in the country. Having both these strong role models as parents set out high expectations for Sage. It also made it hard to have a close relationship with them as they were almost always incredibly busy. They tried, Sage knew that, but she spent a lot of time with babysitters, nannies, and eventually alone because they were at work or events.

That time on her own is what sparked her research into many things and affinity for learning new skills along with anything and everything she could know about her current obsession. It all started when she watched a rerun episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She got fixated on the show, quickly binging every episode of a show definitely not appropriate for her young age of eleven. However, there wasn’t anyone around to stop her. Later this led to an obsession with horror and the supernatural. Many nights were spent on message boards, in chat rooms, and searching for a new movie, show, video game, or comic instead of going out to parties. Not that she was invited to them anyways.

Being alone didn’t bother her too much. Her online interactions and connection to fictional characters made her feel like she always had someone there with her. She found social time at her weekly dungeons and dragons game, along with her many trips to the local comic book store or movie theater. Besides, she was always quick to talk about anything and everything she was into whenever she was presented the opportunity. In fact, she often couldn’t help but offer her opinion on the matter. This likely stemmed from constantly adding her opinion to discussions online. Whether it was true crime unsolved cases, working with others to solve a case or coming up with theories on a comic, movie, or video game’s plot holes, she was part of it.

It wasn’t beyond her that most people didn’t want to hear about how the Halloween movies and Us might be tethered in the same universe or the way all the American Horror Story seasons are connected to the apocalypse. Nor her thoughts on paranormal events, the possibility aliens exist, or the underlying message of the Star Wars movies. But, she also couldn’t see why people were interested in what the Kardashians were doing or what a celebrity wore to the Met Gala. She hasn’t meant to throw shade on other people’s interests but sometimes it feels warranted when they act like hers don’t matter. Now that it seems like a real life slasher situation has come to Riverwood, maybe people will finally listen to what she has been saying all along. After all, she was the expert on how to survive a horror movie.

HEADCANONS:

Sage’s first tattoo when she turned eighteen was of the famous depiction of Michael Myers’ reflection in the blade of his knife from the original Halloween movie. He is her favorite slasher killer.

There are a lot of comics out there, Sage tends to go for the horror comics (of course) but also loves the independent comics like Maus or Scott Pilgrim. Coincidentally the first comic she ever picked up was an issue of Archie on a grocery store trip she’d gone on with one of her babysitters. It’s still a nostalgic favorite of hers despite moving on to other genres. To date she’s read thousands of comics and watched hundreds of movies, at this point she’s lost count.

Due to her obsessions she really lost out on a lot of social life milestones, making it hard for her to carry on regular conversation and awkward in almost all social situations but especially potential romantic encounters. Sage doesn’t understand why it’s weird to talk about the things she loves and spent the majority of her time on the planet obsessing about. People obsess about sports and celebrities, how are movies and comics any different? However this doesn’t stop her from joining in on the conversation whenever she sees the chance.

Shego was Sage’s sexual awakening. Her very first crush. From the moment she first saw her on Kim Possible. Later there would be more crushes like these, like Michelle Trachtenberg from Buffy or one of the many final girls from the horror movies she grew to love so much. Even some of the detective shows. The lack of male crushes, confirmed she was more than likely a lesbian but she doesn’t like to label things so definitively.

Final Thoughts: After my disappointing ebook reads (see DNF section), I really needed something to cheer me up, something I know is good, and since it was Halloween that day, I figured it's a great time to re-read Pumpkinheads. This story is so cute and beautifully illustrated, and I love the little plot twist in the end, it always takes my forgetful brain by wonderful surprise. Highly, highly recommend it. 💖

DNF'd because: Like I said last week, technically the writing was somewhat okay but BOY, did the copy editor sleep while they were editing this book? Did the author even have a copy editor, or do any copy edits themself? I found myself silently correcting things in my head so damn often. At the beginning, it was only mildly irritating but the more I read, the more frustrating it got. Not long after posting last week's reading update, I also found myself suddenly very disinterested in continuing it. Like, I could already tell that even if I did finish it, I would not read any of its sequels, so really, what would be the point? 😮‍💨 so, my DNF cycle continues².

¹ Currently, I'm going through my ebook library, which is full of books I've owned for 7+ years and never read, trying to see just how many of them I'm even still interested in, since my reading tastes have changed a bit since I got them. My process for this is reading the first chapter (or trying to at least) and then seeing how much it intrigues me. If it does, I'll continue it and (try to) finish it, if it doesn't it gets DNF'd.

² But really, I'm glad to finally go through all of these books; at least once I've given them a shot and found they don't hold my interest anymore I don't have to feel guilty anymore for them being unread.
