Eddie naturally woke up in his bed. Only a thin sliver of light came in from between his blackout curtains. He smiled and turned to greet Steve, but his face fell when he noticed he was alone in his room. With a heavy sigh, he let his head fall back onto the bed. He’d hoped to wake up next to him, but he should have known that was too much to ask. He heaved himself to a sitting position and threw on some boxers and a black satin robe with a flame design around the bottom and cuffs. He didn’t even bother tying it closed. Steve differed from the other men he’d dated, so he was sure he had his reasons for leaving, but it still made his chest feel heavy as he walked down the hallway.
All of his melancholy flipped on its head when he saw Steve in his kitchen wearing a pair of his sweats and a Static-X tank top. His face lit up, and he ran up behind him, giving him a big hug.
“Woah careful,” Steve laughed. “You’re going to make me cut myself.”
“Don’t do that,” Eddie said, burying his face in Steve’s neck and kissing it. “I thought you left.”
Steve chuckled and set the knife down. “I was actually hoping to finish before you woke up.” He turned around in Eddie’s arms and ran his hands over his satin-covered biceps. “I wanted to bring you breakfast in bed.”
“That’s sweet of you, but I think I would rather wake up to you in bed.” He held Steve’s waist tightly and gently swayed back and forth.
“Next time.” Steve gave him a quick kiss. “Go sit down.” He nodded to the living room. “It shouldn’t be too much longer.”
Eddie pulled him into another kiss before letting his arms fall from his waist. “Fine,” he said, defeated, and sat at the kitchen bar. He crossed his arms on the counter and rested his head on them as he spun his hips back and forth in the swivel chair, watching Steve cook.
“Oh,” Steve said as he swept the peppers from the cutting board and into a hot skillet. “I already fed Chrissy. I hope that’s okay.”
Eddie smiled and looked over at the cat tree by the window behind him. She was on top of it, happily cleaning herself in a morning sunbeam. He chuckled and returned to watching Steve. “Of course.” He smiled at him. “I’m glad you seem comfortable here.”
“Honestly, I’m surprised that I am. I’m never comfortable at other people’s houses, and I hope it’s not a problem that I hijacked your kitchen.”
“I rarely use it. The microwave gets the most use out of everything in there.”
“I can tell. You had nothing for fresh ingredients. I had to run to the store. Otherwise, I might have actually been able to wake you up with it.” He cracked a couple of eggs into a bowl and beat them. “I’m guessing you don’t like cooking?”
“That and I rarely have time and when I do, I don’t have the energy.” Eddie affectionately watched Steve buzz around. “But it seems like you know your way around a kitchen.”
“I’ve cooked for myself since I was a teen. My parents weren’t around much, and I didn’t like most pre-made foods, so I learned how to cook. I’ve grown to like it.” He poured the eggs into the pan.
“Ever consider getting into it professionally?”
“I did for a little, but I was worried it would take the fun out of it.”
Eddie nodded with a small shrug. “I can see that.” He closed his eyes and inhaled the aromas from the kitchen. Sleep hadn’t fully left him, forcing a yawn. He jumped when Steve slid a plate in front of him. It was a simple omelet and toast.
“It’s nothing fancy,” Steve said as he poured in a second set of eggs for himself.
“No, this is great.” Eddie dug in and swooned. “Fuck,” he mumbled with a mouthful. After he swallowed, he said, “you sure you don’t want to just move in already? This beats throwing something in the microwave or snagging fast food on the way to practice.”
Steve chuckled. He finished cooking his own and joined Eddie at the bar.
“I’m sure you’ve guessed by now,” Eddie said between bites. “But we start up practice on Monday.”
“I figured that’s what the amusement park was all about. I remember you mentioning that you guys have a tradition of doing something big together the weekend prior to the first practice.”
“Yup.”
“That’s why I was worried about getting in the way.”
“Nah, dating me makes you an honorary member of Hellfire. In fact, feel free to stop by practices whenever you want. I would have extended the offer earlier, but I wanted your first show to be organic.”
“You mean give me a heart attack?” Steve gave him a side glance.
“I already apologized for that,” he complained. “I promise I’ll let you know when we’re pulling shit like that again.” He placed a hand on Steve’s shoulder, getting him to look at him.
Steve snickered at Eddie’s overdramatic, wide-eyed pout.
“Don’t be mad at me, Steve,” he pouted.
Steve laughed and pushed Eddie’s face away. “I’m not. It was an impressive stunt.”
“Hey,” he said, quickly dropping his pout and returning to his meal. “Did you invite the girls?”
“Yeah, I sent Robin a text last night after you fell asleep. They’re down.”
“Sweet.” Eddie finished his food and leaned on Steve’s shoulder as he asked, “is there anything I should avoid doing around them? I don’t want to ruin your day by being obnoxious or something.”
“Eddie,” Steve said plainly. “Remember when you said you didn’t want me to walk on eggshells around you?”
“Of course.” Eddie sat up and looked at Steve, concerned by what he was about to say. “I meant it.”
Steve set down his fork and spun to face him. He picked up Eddie’s hands into his own. “The same goes for you. I don’t want you to be anyone but yourself, okay?” He kissed the back of Eddie’s hands.
“I don’t know, Steve,” Eddie said somberly before a smirk crept onto his face. “I can be pretty annoying.”
“Have you met Robin?”
Eddie laughed. “But you’re not dating Robin.”
Steve shook his head and laughed to himself. “I tried to when I first met her.” He turned back to his food. “It’s how I found out she was gay.”
“What, did you confess to her or something?”
“Yeah,” he laughed.
“Oh, shit, seriously? I was joking.”
“Yeah, but my statement still stands.” He raised his eyebrows and looked over at him. “I want to see the real Eddie Munson. The one no one else gets to see.”
Eddie sighed and pushed his plate away so he could lay his head on his arms in its place and stare at Steve. “I’ll keep it in mind, but I can’t promise much. I live my life on eggshells, so letting myself go may be a… process. If you really want it, I’ll work on it, but I’m not going to lie. I’m terrified that you’ll get sick of me.”
Steve sighed and gave Eddie a sympathetic side-eye. “You’ll get tired of me, long before I could ever get sick of you.”
Eddie perked and sat up. “I could never get tired of you.”
Steve wiped his mouth on a napkin, turned to Eddie, and kissed his startled face briefly before standing. “Then I guess we’re good.” He picked up the plates and walked into the kitchen.
An impressed smile spread across Eddie’s face. “Look at you being all smooth and shit,” he teased. He leaned his elbows on the counter and supported his head in his hands as he watched Steve clean up. “So, what you got planned for the day?”
“Well, if it’s cool with you,” Steve said as he washed the dishes. “I was hoping to hang out here.”
“Really?” Eddie said excitedly.
“I’ll take it you like the idea.” He dried off his hands.
“Abso-fucking-lutely!” Eddie hopped off the stool and caught Steve behind his back by the waist as he left the kitchen.
“Jesus,” Steve laughed as he was spun. When he was set down, Eddie turned him around and before he knew it, their lips were locked. He closed his eyes and wrapped his arms around Eddie’s neck. “You really like doing that, don’t you?”
“What? Tossing you around? I adore it.” He smiled and pulled Steve into another brief kiss. “What do you want to do today, then? Watch a movie, work in the garage, go for a ride, go out to a movie, fuck the day away? Anything you want. Anything. I’ll make it happen.”
Steve laughed and pulled Eddie into a hug, running his hands over his arms before resting them at his elbows. “Actually, I just wanted to hang out with you and do nothing. Take the chance to get to know you a little better.”
Eddie held him tightly. “Can’t say I’ve ever had anyone request that, but it sounds perfect.”
He placed his lips against Eddie’s neck. “Although, fucking the day away does sound pretty fun.”
“Why not do both?” Eddie said as he gently rubbed Steve’s back.
“Well, I would like to be able to walk tomorrow.” He leaned away from Eddie and let himself be supported by his arms.
“I can be gentle, or you could fuck me.”
“You see, that’s the problem,” Steve said coyly as he pressed his lips gently against Eddie’s and said, “I wouldn’t want you to be gentle.”
“Oh, you fucking tease.” Eddie visibly swooned and dove his tongue into Steve’s mouth. “Good god you’re hot.”
Steve smirked. “And you have morning breath.”
“Shit,” Eddie covered his mouth, slipped out of Steve’s arms, and ran back to his room. Steve laughed and shook his head, returning to cleaning up the kitchen.
