Fallen Hero Fanzine 2024 - Info and Theme Poll
All info is under the cut since I don't want to clutter your dash too much! EDIT: Tumblr hates multiple choices for Polls apparently, you can vote but also write in replies (or send anonymous through dm, but please don't send multiple of the same option to get what you want, let's keep it fair!) if you want to vote for more than one option! (Sorry for the inconvenience!)
Hi everyone!
Since I got the feedback on the interest check for a possible Fallen Hero Fanzine it seems like we have some interest and I’ve been looking into various ways we could do this. As I’m big on collaboration and everyone getting a say, I was thinking that deciding on a theme for the zine could be our first collaborative step.
I’ve made a poll (found further down in this post) with 7 options for you to vote on. Descriptions/explanations are found right below the poll so make sure to read those before casting your vote. We’re keeping this first zine sfw, please keep that in mind if suggesting themes of your own. Voting doesn’t tie you to contributing to the zine.
Jumping into something headfirst without knowing what you’ll find on the other side is scary, that’s why I’ve written a short list of what I have in mind for this zine.
The zine will be 100% free and non-profit, this also means no compensation for the contributors. Theme: TBD through majority vote Number of contributors: Max 30 (I would love to have more but, unless someone can help me with admin stuff, I think that’s my limit for how much organising and planning I can do on my own). Rating: SFW. Innuendos, cursing, violence and the like is okay but not straight up sex. Format: Digital/e-zine, with permission to print at home for personal use only. I will put together a bonus version made for easy to print at home, with instructions for how to assemble it. Media types allowed: Any visual media suited for print as long as it’s your own (e.g. illustrations, sketches, photography, collages, short comics, cosplay etc). Keep in mind that if you make a collage or mood board, all pictures must be your own (or have the rights to). Any writing as long as it’s your own (e.g. short stories, poetry, analyses, personal anecdotes etc). Pages in zine per contributor: 2. Time frame and deadlines: TBD but I plan on us having it finished around September/October of 2024, with some reservations.
I hope this has been informative so far, if you have questions you can either reply to this post (so everyone else can see the question and reply), or dm me if you want to be anonymous.
Now, let’s get to voting on a theme! Descriptions for themes under the poll.
Nemesis - More action focused, showdowns, heroes and villains battling it out in their suits! Some softer moments could fit in here as well but if too many opt towards it I might steer some of the submissions to make sure the zine in whole stays on theme. Coming Home - New beginnings, finding your place. It could be sweet and cozy, finding friends, or stepping into your own skin for the first time. Interpret as you like, but the main focus should be on the concept of “home”, whatever that means to you or the characters you choose to portray. Los Diablos - Snippets and snapshots from the city and lives you are sworn to protect or destroy. HG’s lair, Herald’s apartment, or a sewer (sorry, secret base), as well as the people found in these places. Nightmares - The bad vibes (tm) one. The Heartbreak Incident, decanting, paranoia, all the nasty bits you don’t want people to find. This one is open to more possible body horror than the other themes. Ship specific - Pick this one if you want a more romance focused theme, and specify in replies which characters you’d want in centre. Please write Ship Theme before the characters in your reply. I have another idea! - Got an idea for a theme that isn’t in the poll? Pick this one and specify in replies what it is! Please specify even if someone has the same idea, or close to, as you. Please write Theme Suggestion before the theme in your reply. No theme - Don’t feel like sticking to a theme? Want to create an amalgamation of everyone’s mind stuff without any limits or guidelines? This choice is for you.

I've been trawling invader zim tumblr pretty intensely and I wanted to say that I love your take on adult dib <3 you strike a balance between "point and laugh at the incel" and "hasn't realized that this is a horror movie and HE'S the villain" that gives him this stage presence that honestly makes him my favorite au dib. and the way you DRAW him.... rly has that original comics flavor. so crunchy <3 <3
Thank you VERY MUCH!!!! For stopping by to say so. His desecration and transformation into the thing he's had potential to be since day one has got to be my favorite thing about writing Dib for Space Trash. Humans as being monstrous to other alien species is one of my favorite new scifi tropes. I really want to hammer home that Zim is just as much of a freak as Dib is, for liking Dib. They deserve eachother, for better or for worse.
Since you like him so much, have a collage of my past years Dib sketches, and have a phenomenal week! <3<3<3

Riddler, Mad Hatter, Harley Quinn, and Music Meister: How would they react to pulling Scarecrow for Secret Santa? What would they get him?
It sounds fun.
Riddler
Fuck!
His luck is very bad
Wonders what he even likes
Books and horror; he probably read every horror book on the planet so he needs something with horror
Makes robot who looks scary, there
Mad Hatter
Oh how nice
The first thing that game to his mind was Jaberwocky
Requests a plushie of it and adds poem to it
Harley Quinn
Oh how nice!
She would make a collage of photos of both of them in villains costumes as well as doctors
Music Meister
... he literally doesn't know anything about him
He knows the whole scary gimmick so might just buy him tickets to "Little Shop of Horrors" or "Sweeney Todd" and call it a day

TWST Boys’ Favorite Earth Movies
This list is only comprised of movies that I have seen. I haven’t seen that many movies in comparison to others, so if you have any suggestions for a movie that is a better fit for a character, please let me know! I would love to hear your ideas!
Also spoilers for the movies listed! No twst spoilers.
I tried to stay true to the characters, but I’m very sorry if any character is ooc!
The post is under the cut since it is very long😅
Riddle: Alice in Wonderland (2010)
While Riddle was a little bugged by how the movie was immensely inaccurate in accordance to Twisted Wonderland history, he found himself to surprisingly enjoy it. The plot being set in a different time with an older protagonist made it stand out to him as a different take on the tale. He was taken aback with how different the Queen of Hearts (sorry, the Red Queen) is in this film, along with the addition of a White Queen. After a while, he realized that this was a completely different story and stopped nitpicking, and that was when he started to enjoy the movie for what it was.
Trey: Kiki’s Delivery Service
He enjoys the simplicity of it, as well as the amount of baking involved in the plot. The art style of the film was also very pleasing to him, it gave off a sense of peace, and he could tell a lot of love and care went into the film. He also resonated with the main conflict, that if something you love turns into your job, you will lose passion for it and get burnt out. He relates to it because he sometimes fears that that’s how he’ll end up with baking. He liked the conclusion, and it left him with something to think about.
Cater: 21 Jump Street
Cater was a very tricky one to find a movie for. I felt that he wouldn’t like a mindless comedy, but he also wouldn’t like something too complex or provocative, or something that makes him think too much. So I settled on this funny buddy cop movie. The comedy kept him laughing, but the complex friendship shown between the two main characters kept him engaged. He likes how the two became closer from their newly-developed perspectives and shared hardships, and low key wishes something like that would happen to him one day.
Ace: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
As you could guess, the idea of skipping school and going on a grand adventure of fun and self-discovery through town is very appealing to Ace. The entire time, he was daydreaming of doing the same thing with Deuce and MC. Oh he has so many ideas for a future outing with his friends now.
Deuce: Accepted
He adores the message of this movie. As someone who didn’t even know he was going to be accepted into a normal high school let alone Night Raven Collage, the ending speech made him shed a tear or two. He also started to entertain the idea of building a school, or even a secret hideout, with his friends. But he dismissed it, he didn’t want to get into any more trouble than he and the freshman gang already get into.
Leona: Fight Club
The only movie where he didn’t fall asleep midway through. He knew something weird was going on with the main character and Tyler, and he was close to guessing the big reveal. The plot in which the fight club slowly turns into a terrorist group was also engaging, he likened it to a king letting his kingdom and subjects fall with him as he descends into madness.
Ruggie: JoJo Rabbit
Ruggie was also tough to find a movie for, but I think he would like this one. Obviously he doesn’t understand going through the horrors of war, but he does know the feeling of loneliness, clinging onto the one person you have left, and, of course, living in poverty. He also totally cried at Rosie’s death reveal and the battle scene.
Jack: Princess Mononoke
He liked that there was no “villain” or side that is pure evil for the sake of it. There were clear reasons why each side felt contempt for their situation and went to war to get what they wanted, and he respects that greatly. He also liked the depiction of wolves a lot. He noticed that a good bit of media on Earth depicted the wolves as the villains, so he loved that they were depicted as just another band of creatures doing what they could to survive and raise that girl in the forest. He appreciates the proper wolf representation.
Azul: Seven
Azul is the type of guy that likes a movie that makes him think, and murder mysteries are a fun treat to him from time to time. While the blood and gore started to make him queasy after a while, he greatly enjoyed trying to piece together the murderer’s plan. The discussions about morality and fame and infamy were also evocative. The ending absolutely shocked him and left him reeling long after the movie was over. While he enjoyed it a lot, it’s not a movie he would watch all the time due to the violence.
Jade: Clue
While Jade also enjoyed Seven, and might even be inclined to watch it more than Azul, he would enjoy a more tame murder mystery to watch for fun. He liked trying to find who the killer was all while the silly comedy managed to get a chuckle or two out of him. Liked everything about it except the idea of multiple endings, but excuses it when he was told it was based on a game where anyone could end up being the killer. He later decides to take money out of Mostro Lounge’s budget to buy the game.
Floyd: Ponyo
Didn’t expect to like a movie he thought was for babies, but he ended up really enjoying it. He likes the characters, the setting, and also all the fishes! Just like Sosuke and Ponyo, he likes to try and identify as many sea creatures he can whenever he watches it. Also really likes Ponyo’s mom, she reminds him of his own mom, in a way. Also hums the end credits song while he’s working sometimes.
Kalim: My Neighbor Totoro
Kalim is a very open-minded person, so he appreciates a movie that encapsulates something he has never experienced before. In this case: simple cottage life. As the movie goes on, he starts to wish he could live that care-free life alongside his siblings and Jamil. Adores Totoro and the cat bus and as soon as the movie is over, he buys any merch of them he could get his hands on, much to Jamil’s annoyance.
Jamil: Ocean’s 11
Like Azul, he loves when a cunning scheme come together in the end, so I thought he would enjoy a good heist movie. He enjoyed trying to guess the specific elements of the plan and how everything fit together. Also related to how the characters teamed up to get back at those who wronged them.
Vil: Crimson Peak
The entire movie was just so aesthetically pleasing to him. While gothic is not his absolute favorite aesthetic, he loves it when it’s done right, and he certainly thinks so here. The dilapidated gothic manor, the designs and special effects for the ghosts, and especially the costumes. He learned that the film won an award for its costume design and he certainly thinks it’s deserved. He also had to give credit to the performances of the actors. While he nitpicked parts of the plot, he definitely enjoyed the film as a whole.
Rook: Grand Budapest Hotel
Aesthetically pleasing as well as full of good action, this was right up his alley. He loved the colors and set pieces, but the aspect that fascinated him the most was the direction style. He can’t quite put his finger on what it would be called, but he’s never seen a movie that was directed like this before.
Epel: The Secret World of Arrietty
He was fascinated by how something on such a small scale can seem so grand. Since the main characters were small, the world looked so much bigger around them. The parts Epel enjoyed the most were the quiet moments with Sean laying out in the yard with the cat, or when he was trying to befriend Arrietty. Moments like those reminded him of his home during the summer time.
Idia: The Nightmare Before Christmas
While his main interests are anime and video games, Idia loves a good horror movie. Although he knows this film doesn’t technically count as a horror movie, it was similar enough to his all-time favorite movie to keep him wanting to see more. He loves the art and animation style. Stop-motion is not a style he’s familiar with, but he’s certainly interested now. Also Oogie Boogie is one his favorite animated villains now.
Ortho: Ready Player One
Just the thought of playing around in a whole virtual reality world with his brother and friends made him practically bounce in his seat. Making his own avatar and fighting an evil corporate organization made him daydream. Even though he doesn’t get any of the pop culture references, he still loves the plot and concept of it all, and believes his brother will be Twisted Wonderland’s James Halliday one day.
Malleus: How to Train Your Dragon
He immediately likened the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless to him and MC. He saw all the movies, but he has to say that the first one is his favorite. The plot of the human and the dragon growing to trust and love one another touched him, and it made him hope the he could continue being friends with MC.
Lilia: Pan’s Labyrinth
He left the film with conflicting emotions. He was thoroughly heartbroken, yet hopeful by the end of it. That poor girl had been through so much, but at least she was reunited with her true family in the end. He loved the designs and special effects used for the monsters (the hand monster actually managed to disturb him a bit) most of all.
Silver: Hero
Despite having to read subtitles, he loved how it kept him engaged. While he started to drift off when the characters were talking too much, there was a fight scene or compelling drama to wake him up again. Speaking of the fight scenes, they were his favorite part about the movie. Swords and people were literally flying, everything flowed so freely, it was like nothing he’d ever seen before.
Sebek: Indiana Jones
A classic “hero’s journey” type of movie would be up Sebek’s alley, and this is one of the all-time classics. While he kept criticizing Indie and loudly proclaiming what he or Malleus would do in any plot point, he enjoyed the novelty of it, and he sees why the film is so famous.

Please tell me the plot, in point form, of your least favourite horror movie (to date).
House of 1000 Corpses. Without a doubt, that is my least favourite horror movie I've watched at this point. It's not even a contest. It's also been a while since I watched it so forgive me if I'm a little vague or fuzzy on the details, lol.
Also, it's a bit...well, it's a lot. Under the cut because LONG (and also murder I guess)
Plot:
Two criminals attempt to rob a gas station run by a man in faded clown make-up (Captain Spaulding); and he murders them with his assistant.
Four teens show up looking to write about roadside attractions off the beaten path, and Captain Spaulding shows them his Museum of Monsters and Madmen. He tells them a story about a doctor (Dr. Satan. Yes, you read that right. His name is Dr. Satan) who was hung at a nearby tree and of course they want to go.
From there, they end up lured out to a house of a strange family. The family is *obsessed* with Hallowe'en. There is some attempts at seduction going on, also some sort of halloween show? but it's a private show just for the teens and the family.
The family tortures them. The family has also tortured and murdered several cheerleaders at this time in the story.
Cops have been called as one of the teens' fathers notice she's missing. The father also comes to help search?
The cops and father end up murdered as well.
3 of the teens (because one is dead) are paraded outside...in rabbit costumes? and taken to an abandoned well (I think? it might have just been a pit).
One gets murdered for trying to run, the other two are lowered down into the ground in coffins (in the well/pit thingy).
The failed experiments of Dr. Satan (under the ground on the property???) steal one of them away and leave the other to make her way through the underground on her own (there are tunnels????)
She comes across Dr. Satan (who was alive this whole time?????and his assistant is the mutilated but still alive ex-husband of the matriarch of the strange murderous family???) murdering her friend.
She manages to escape, and flees to the highway. She is picked up on the side of the road by Captain Spaulding.
She passes out from exhaustion and probably also shock. *jumpscare* suddenly one of the family members pops out of hiding in the back seat (he had time to get there???? before her????).
When she wakes up she is strapped to an operating table and Dr. Satan is there. She screams.
The End?
Ok ok ok so initially, initially I felt bad about disliking this movie so much. And then I found out that the director, Rob Zombie, actually doesn't even like it and won't watch it because he feels it is not good (source) (warning for clown if that scares anyone; that's the picture for the article) and I didn't feel so bad about it. (also, I get it, I also have things I created when I was first getting into writing fanfic that make me kind of shudder inside) Plus, it's not like I'm obligated to like a film. Also, I never said I hated it, just that it's my least favourite.
My reason for disliking it isn't really complicated. In my opinion, it's a bit of a hodge-podge of random horror tropes that are kind of pasted together like a giant horror collage. That's not bad, exactly, but it kind of made the plot feel a bit halfhearted at points and it made things a little hard to follow. It also made character motives hard to believe (or even figure out to begin with).
I think what I can say is that it explores the possible brutal and violent nature of humans, and that it clearly shows a love for horror, even if I personally think that all the tropes being mashed together like that are a bit much. (if people don't know what tropes I mean, I can list a few: teens on a roadtrip, mysterious stranger at a gas station, clown, cheerleaders/scantily clad women, local legend of an old execution that turns out sort-of true, disfigured hillbilly-ish villains, family that tortures together, doctor experimenting unethically on humans, plot twist that the man that supposedly helped the protagonist is actually in cahoots with the murderers, etc. That's not even all. That's just what I can remember.) The thing is, any one of those tropes alone can be a great plot for a horror movie. Even a couple of them fit really well together and have proven to be good horror stories to the masses (teen roadtrip + family that tortures together = Texas Chainsaw Massacre; mysterious stranger at a gas station + disfigured hillbilly villains = The Hills Have Eyes; etc). But putting them all together is kind of overwhelming and you end up losing the plot. There was a point where I went "what the fuck is even happening" and not in a good way.
That all being said, I will stand by my statement that the movie shows the director's love of horror, even if I personally didn't like it. I am still glad I watched it, even if I didn't get it at times or the plot seemed really disconnected. I definitely think it should be viewed as a "for fun" horror movie, rather than a super serious one, and honestly whenever I think of it like that I feel I can connect to it a little bit better. So, yeah. That's my thoughts on that one.

Villainous Husband, The One You’re Obsessed With Is Over There
Do you ever have the craving for a really fucked up, borderline horror otome isekai story about a woman who is actually willing to do anything to survive? Well i finally found something that satisfy my craving.
Our beloved little princess is Angelica who got isekaied into a novel with a bad ending. Her role in the story is just to be an unnamed, faceless wife to the emperor who killed her so he could take the female lead as his wife. So now she must live until the moment the emperor meets the female lead so she can runaway.
So straight up, the guy is the most rotten, sociopathic, deranged son of a bitch that i've ever seen. You wanna know why Angelica ended up as his wife? He threw a knife at a wall filled with pictures of potential wives and the knife landed in Angelicas left eye. Yeah, it was that crazy. I feel so bad for Angelica because she got stuck with the worse situation where she has to constantly tip toe around a man who can literally end her life if he thought it would be fun.
It's tagged as a romance but i've seen alot of people say that it's way to fucked up to be called that, which is fair. But it's absolutely perfect for bitches who have no morals like me. Like the horror, the insanity of an empire run by the laws of power, the psychological aspect of it all. Ugh, it was the perfect storm for me. Anyways read it if you want but know that this story is a dead dove, view on your own discrestion.

I Reincarnated as a Noble Girl Villainess But Why Did It Turn Out This Way?
There is a weird niche inside of Japanese otome isekai, which is basically "I got isekaied into an otome game but instead of becoming a sterostypical noble lady i became the protagonist of a military/hunter story". Which explains this story.
Eliza Kaldia, who was reincarnated as the villainess found herself in a shit situation. Her entire family are fucking stupid, evil, vapid nobles who are on the verge of bankrupting their land. So the poor gal did what she had to do, which is to poison her entire family when she was 2 years old. Like she hesitate but while she was doing that her family has already caused a dozen more deaths, so i support her.
Home girl also didn't got it easy after the death of her evil family, like after her family die the goverment put her under the guardianship of a well respected old noble. Like the guy wasn't evil or anything, he was a great person all around, but Eliza had to endure undergo harsh governance and military training, which she accepts without questioning because she's smart enough to realize the reality of her situation, and also because she feels that it is her responsibility to restore the domain that was devastated by her family. Mad respect for that.
If you like bloody, realistic, brutal stories about great people rising above from their tragic circumstances i would say that this is a great story for you.
Life update: sorry for the short list, collage has been a real life eater so i didn't have the energy to read alot. Mostly i've just been playing otome games to pass the time but i didn't know if i could put it on this list so i decided against it. I promise I'll make it up to you guys but writing more reviews this month to make up for this.
Love ya, bye

man, i’m rewatching the following, as i do every six months or so for the nostalgia of it all and it really does seem to get worse over time but in reality i just think other media has gotten better or at least i’ve had more access to diverse media that has raised my standards significantly and now representation has improved so much that as an adult i’ve forgotten what it was like to be so starved for it that i didn’t care about quality.
the majority of the characters and media that i was obsessed with as a young person were villains and i assumed that was because i just didn’t know any better but the core of the problem was that the protagonists in nearly everything were generic wasp dudes and the heroes aside from him had to fit neatly into archetypes that served his story. every “good” woman was constrained by the need for her entire being to fit his romantic interests, every poc, disabled or gay character had to be the after school special or the token friend to exist as evidence he was so good that he was totally not racist and nice to the weirdos / down with the homos. meanwhile, the villains got plenty of attention yet got to do and be whatever the fuck they wanted because they were the bad guys. when i look back at my old fandoms and ships and all that it’s basically a “psycho lesbian” trope collage, along with some gnc villains and the big bads’ murderous girlfriends sprinkled in. like, the hunger games is probably the first time i can remember reading an appealing, relatable (in the sense of being flawed and unlikeable in many very real ways) female protagonist with dimension outside of romantic intent and outside of books or horror the situation was ten times as dire.
of course i hated claire and loved emma when the following first aired; claire got zero personality outside of being an object for the leading men to fight over while emma got to have a pixie cut, a personality and kill anybody who gave her shit over it. two main villains with loads of screen time were a compelling, human, multi-dimensional gay couple when that simply wasn’t even a concept in mainstream media only a decade or so ago. i actually wept when korra and asami openly got together because i was so in love with azula and ty lee who got to be subtly sapphic due solely to the fact that they were evil and here two heroic ladies were as a couple in the sequel to the original show. like, it’s odd that i never put two and two together about the fact that villains were appealing because they were intense, flawed, diverse and often gay and lesbian coded people, not because i was irredeemably awful.
i’m wearing a weathered slytherin scrunchie gifted to me eons ago on my wrist while taking a break from a passion paper on protecting endangered tarantulas for the field i’ve been pursuing for years as i type this and quite honestly i can’t help but wonder for the first fucking time how much of my lasting affinity and compassion for the dark side despite having long grown out of my teenage edgelord phase is because during my formative years i may have always rooted for the heroes but i only ever got to see myself in the villains.
it’s kinda sad that it turns out that my entire adolescence had been some scooby doo shit in which fred rips off the monster mask and it turns out my morals were never faulty; the morals of the culture i grew up in were.
(except fred is kevin bacon in this case i guess?)

NOT BLOGTOBER 10/20/2022: ZO IN EXILE
When I read the description of Dylan O’Keefe’s compact, low budget indie project ZO IN EXILE, I developed a certain image of it in my mind:
“Zo and friends venture off for a weekend getaway to a cabin in the quiet town of Exile, New York. But a bucolic vacation turns grim when Zo's friends, fueled by debauchery and excess, plunge her into a fantasy world of frenzy where her only escape is to come to terms with her own destructive nature. Or else face the music of eternal madness.”
Between this summary and the movie’s poster, featuring lead actress Shiho Matsuoka’s pained expression as she gazes into the void, I came to expect a grim, agonal psychodrama about the sadomasochism inherent in human nature. I had set myself up for a big surprise. ZO IN EXILE defied my expectations several times from being to end, the experience of which is so pleasing that I hesitate to describe what happens in it to others. It would be better to go in knowing as little as I did. But, if you insist on coming prepared, I’ll do my best to explain it.
Tumblr media
The first seed of ZO IN EXILE was sown when filmmaker Dylan O’Keefe and his fiancee and producer Jennifir Nicholich started joking about the prodigious mop Dylan had grown during the pandemic, aping the end of THE WIZARD OF OZ: “And you were there, and you were there, and you were there, and you were—HAIR?!’” The gag eventually evolved into one of ZO’s central villains, a sentient, man-sized, blade-wielding wig that pursues Zo through her own version of Oz. In saying this much, I’ve already given you a taste of how bonkers ZO IN EXILE is, but like THE WIZARD OF OZ, it begins in a very familiar place.
Zo (Shiho Matsuoka) joins her friend Jack (Adrián Burke) and horny couple Jacob (John DiMino) and Judy (Madeleine Ours) for a getaway at a cabin in the woods. The shy, sensitive protagonist’s unease with her companions’ hard partying seems to forecast an EVIL DEAD-like fate for them all—and let’s face it, EVIL DEAD is a popular thing to imitate for young filmmakers on a microbudget. So, if you’ve seen any amount of homemade horror movies, you might feel like you know what you’re in for. O’Keefe is counting on it: “It’s been done a hundred thousand times, it’s very easy to shoot… So I kind of wanted to follow that cliché, and then trail off into Alice In Wonderland.” Initially, Zo is more threatened by her so-called friends than the cosmic horror that haunts the cabin, as “nice guy” Jack joins the group effort to get her hammered so she’ll be more vulnerable to him, and Jacob physically isolates her, knocking her out. Zo doesn’t consciously experience what so obviously happens next, as she plunges into a dream state that at first resembles a karaoke video.
Tumblr media
This “follow the bouncing ball” musical sequence is the first hint we have that the world of Exile is collaged out of various forms of popular media that make up our collective subconscious; some viewers have noted similarities to HAUSU, TOO MANY COOKS, and Wonder Showzen, but O'Keefe's influences are more mundane. In her dream state, Zo meets the otherworldly Landlord (Tee Sudderth), a deceptively maternal woman with a malicious wig, who sends our heroine winking in and out of parallel universes resembling early silent films, TV commercials, sitcoms, and YouTube tutorials as she tries to find her way home. After inducing a false sense of familiarity with its EVIL DEAD pastiche, the insanity of EXILE escalates rapidly, and against all expectations, it becomes extremely funny. In its most startling episode, a Tiktok influencer has her phone stolen mid-video, and we join the phone on a breakneck race through the subway system where it meets a grim fate. The best special effect in the movie is really O’Keefe’s editing, which creates a rhythm that suits both horror and comedy.
“I want to do something I didn’t have to really care about, that I could try to not be such a perfectionist with,” the filmmaker says of a film that he is careful to insist was made just for fun. ZO IN EXILE was shot and assembled over two years of the pandemic more or less as a diversion, but as zany as it is, there remains something personal and quietly intense simmering beneath its surface. A particularly hilarious scene involves a predatory telemarketer (Noam Harary) from Great Northern Wellness and Insurance, Innovative Products, Brokers & Adjusters who tries to scam an isolated old lady named Helen, but she’s seen so much shit in her time that there is no beating her. The scene goes from comical to oddly sobering, before transitioning to a scene of Zo wandering through a seemingly endless graveyard that blends perfectly into the Manhattan skyline, giving the impression that the city and the cemetery are part of the same continuum. O’Keefe explains this sequence: “The whole idea was, my mother is a hospice worker, and unfortunately the elderly are very disposable (in our society). The telemarketer is trying to grift this person at the end of her life; if there’s a dollar to be made, it will be.”
Tumblr media
Dylan O’Keefe credits his bright, hardworking mother as a major influence on him, which makes it unsurprising that ZO IN EXILE is dotted with potent female characters. The Landlord finds a parallel in the caretaker Biandbi (Debra Toscano), an amusingly passive-aggressive Italian-American lady who ropes Zo into the film’s most dreamlike scenario. She entices Zo to help her tend to a beehive inside an antique trunk, explaining, “If the hive has a violent queen, the hive is violent. If the hive has a gentle queen, the hive is gentle. I have a violent queen…you must be the gentle queen.” Besides being excitingly weird, the scene also puns on Zo’s longed-for home in Queens, and also the multiple queen-like figures in the story. As our heroine, Shiho Matsuoka plays it deadly straight, which has the effect of making the funny scenes even funnier, and the moving moments more affecting. If there were even a whiff of sarcasm or irony about her, ZO IN EXILE wouldn’t work the way it does, with its strange undercurrent of sincerity.
Tumblr media
The strong, independent women aren’t the only abstractly autobiographical element in the movie; perhaps its most striking image is of a burning piano (with incredible live sound), which happens to be the exact instrument on which the filmmaker learned to play as a youth. O’Keefe laughs off this strangely poignant inclusion by noting, “During the pandemic when work was slow, I became a volunteer firefighter. I’m a bit of a pyro, I like to light shit on fire—sorry, Chief! But I’m lapsed now, I haven’t volunteered for six months.” The real thing to learn from this beat is that you don’t need to be spoiled for resources in order to make a really surreal and visually striking movie; you just need an open mind and a little gumption. OK, maybe a lot of gumption, especially if you’re trying to make something unusual that people don’t yet know they'll want to see.
What I’m trying to say is, you DO want to see it, because there’s no other way you’ll believe it. Check it out tonight (10/27) at 10pm, and this Saturday (10/29) at midnight at the Film Noir Cinema in Greenpoint. If your friends are foolish enough to miss it but you don’t know how to describe it, point them to this review and maybe that’ll help. Maybe.

STUDIO W2 "THE ONE AND ONLY VILLAIN"

Practice Exploration of The Open City by Richard Sennett
The head of Corbusier sits on the body of Rishi Sunak, the wealthiest man in charge of the UK as of today (2023). Bills have been passed in government which overtly only benefit the Bourgeoisie and the corporations (e.g. his overt lies about Net Zero.) at the cost of the people and the environment. A real world example of the disconnect between Democracy/Government & the people. The Public realm & Natural world is at threat due to capitalist greed.
Sennett talked about the disconnect between the people and democracy, speaking about democracy not just as a place, but also as a concept lost in time through over determination.
The buildings in the background are hailed by modern architectural enthusiasts as feats of architectural design + engineering, but Sennett posits that they are fundamentally separate from the 'street', and therefore the 'people' (see concept: urban canyon). Of course, he talks about how some buildings, when they are not porous as historic ones are, become 'self referential objects X', like St Pauls Cathedral, but the stimulation of urban growth around this building is a result of function, not just as a result of good design. This can also be called the Autopoiesis of Architecture.
Focal Point of the text:
Making the case for 'the open city', setting the architectural & socio-economic context of existing cities (New York, London etc.)
Key Ideas:
+ economics (Keynesian - demand drives supply.)
Over-determination
Over specification of form and function
State socialism + democracy as a concept. Democracy (Politicians) has been removed from its original function. How can we create spaces with the same sense of relatedness among strangers? How can we open up spaces?
"process of growth as a continual struggle between equilibrium and disequilibrium; an environment rigid in form, static in programme, is doomed in time."
He infers that what we have forced onto the city is unnatural, creating the symptom that is the Brittle City, by comparing cities to Darwin's evolution.
Tumblr media
Primary themes wanted to express in artefact:
The socio-economic role of urban design in architecture: idealism versus historic reality
Concepts like:
CIAM movement of Le Corbusier, affectionately dubbed “the one and only Villain.” Ancient Polis (Democracy) 'Light Architecture' removed from the person Keynesian economics Garden cities as the ideal form Self referential objects Louis Sullivan Norman Foster Mies Van Der Rohe (Seagram Building) The Shard Dead spaces Rigid fixed
Specific medium selected:
//Collage Since there is a lot of ideas floating about, it was the best way to translate the different elements without putting it in a spatial capacity.
Quotes from the text:
//Collage
Quotes Direct from the text:
"Corbusier's intended destruction of vibrant street life was realised in suburban growth for the middle class"
"Frozen the city in time"
"over determination"
"Over specification of form and function."
"Dystopia became reality in various ways."
"Modern Urban environments decay much more quickly than urban fabric inherited from the past."
"The brittle city is a symptom"
"State socialism"
"The closed city betrays the twentieth-century beurocrat's horror of disorder."
"If density and diversity give life, the life they breed is disorderly... the arts result from overcrowding"
"People live into these places, like nesting, time breeds attachment into place."
Three systematic elements of an open city:
Passage territories
Incomplete form
Development narratives
Self referential objects
Glass walls versus porous stone ones.
Evolution (Darwin) in reference to cities.
