“Glad to see you’re finally awake.”

You take in a deep breath before letting out a tired groan, rubbing the sleep from your eyes to help wake yourself up. You drop your hands and look up to find your boyfriend of two years hovering over you, staring you down while doing his tie.

“Good morning to you too, sunshine,” you tease, stretching your limbs out with an even louder groan. You hear him huff, your smile growing at the sound.

“C’mon, (Y/n). We are going to be late to class,” Todoroki encourages as he tugs his covers off of you, your naked body shivering as soon as the cool air graces your bare skin.

“Baby, it’s cold,” you whine, jutting your bottom lip out into a pout while staring up at him with big, round eyes. He sighs and drops the covers back onto you, unable to resist the look.

“I’m serious. You need to get up if you want to shower and eat breakfast if you don’t want to be late for class,” he replies, completely ignoring your cold and naked figure under the covers. His hands then go back to his tie, his hands gracefully looping the material. You hum as you watch his hands work, remembering how they were working all too well against your squirming body last night.

He just finishes with his tie when you grab it and tug him back onto the bed. “(Y/n),” he starts, his tone making you aware of an oncoming speech. You shush him as you climb into his lap, starting to grind against his thigh as you kiss up his neck.

“Or, instead of a shower and breakfast, we can go another round before we have to go,” you mumble against his skin in a sultry tone. You definitely had his attention, but you wouldn’t know that from how unfazed he looks.

“I’m hungry,” he insists, placing his hands on your hips to push you off when he notices the wet patch you left on his pants. He sighs and leans back against his headboard, his eyes now noticing the way you’re moving and touching your body.

“Well, breakfast is served,” you coo, grabbing his wrist and leading his hand to your excited sex. He tries to resist you, he really does, but he’s just too weak for you. You let out a squeal when he suddenly flips you over, mischief swimming through his mismatched eyes while a smirk comes to his handsome face. You’re already moaning his name and he’s barely touched your most sensitive parts.

“Don’t mind if I do,” he coos right back at you before diving in to enjoy his first meal of the day.

Yeah, you two ended up being late. Not that it mattered though, seeing as how Mr. Aizawa wasn’t even there yet, per usual. You’re sure that you two look like a hot mess, but you couldn’t really bring it in you to care, the sex chemicals still giving your brain happy hormones.

As you’re passing by Bakugou to get to your seat, you hear him mumble, “God, you smell like sex.” Thanks to your brain still being equivalent to mush, you were going to let it go but, of course, your protective boyfriend couldn’t let it go.

“Not that you would know what that smells like, Kacchan,” he quips, knowing just how much the blond hates that name. And, just as you predicted, Bakugou stands up with a snarl and smoke practically spewing out of his nostrils.

“What did you just say to me, you half and half bastard?” he shouts, swiftly moving towards your boyfriend. You sigh with a roll of your eyes and move to stand in front of Todoroki to face Bakugou.

He wouldn’t admit it and no one would dare tease him about it, but Bakugou secretly has a soft spot for you. To be fair though, you’ve been friends almost as long as he and Deku have known each other. Ever since you started dating ‘Icy-Hot’ though, he hasn’t been talking to you as much, which wasn’t very much to begin with.

“Move it, (Y/n),” he growls threateningly but you’re not phased. You cross your arms over your chest and stare him down, refusing to look away from his blazing red eyes.

“No, back off. So what if we smell like sex? We are two consenting adults in a relationship, so shut up about it,” you argue, watching his stance falter. He wasn’t expecting you to be so open about it. Then again, everyone knows you and Todoroki are having sex on the regular after what everyone calls the ‘New Year’s Eve Panty Fiasco.’

Bakugou stares at you a moment longer before shifting his gaze to glare at Todoroki. He finally lets it go with a huff and trudges back down to his seat, throwing himself down with a defeated plop. Todoroki eyes him for a couple of seconds before letting you drag him away and to your seats. “Just for that, we should have extra loud sex on the floor since he’s right below us,” he grumbles only for you to hear, his hand taking its usual place on your thigh once you’re seated.

You giggle at his words, pulling out your computer and other materials for class. “Since when are you so bold?” you ask teasingly, knowing that Bakugou just rubs people the wrong way sometimes and drives them to do things they normally wouldn’t do.

“Since I asked you out,” he replies, finally turning to look at you, the hint of a smile on his face and in his eyes.

“Hm, well then, guess we’ll just have to see if you’re still thinking that way once you’ve cooled off. That shouldn’t be hard for you though,” you reply before adding a quirk joke, trying not to laugh at how stiff his face is as he stares back at you.

“I don’t get it.”

The only thing you loved more than your job was your boss. You particularly lived to tease him, to see how far you can push him, to make him squirm. It was an easy thing to do when you were miles away in your cave of an office and completely separated from the rest of the agency.

It was significantly harder to do when he came storming into your sacred space full of computers, wires, and monitors looking like he wanted to throw you across his lap and spank the hell out of you. In retrospect, you had technically given him that very idea about an hour ago. It had not been your finest moment to say the least.

You worked as an informant to a government investigative agency. You secretly referred to yourself as a lawful hacker, an overall chaotic good. Sadly, you were absolutely certain that your boss Kim Namjoon felt otherwise since he often bore the brunt of your said chaotic energy.

You could never tell if he actually enjoyed your banter or if he simply tolerated you because you worked with him. Sometimes you could swear he flirted back, but that could just be your own wishful thinking. Either way, you knew that you exasperated him to no end, and you fucking loved it.

Just an hour prior, you had been called by Namjoon to track a lead for a new case. The deep resonance of his voice had met your ears, and you had melted - as per usual. “Hey, (y/n),” He had greeted you with that delicious voice of his, “You’re on speaker. Behave.”

The words had been out of your mouth before you could stop them, “Or what, you’ll spank me?”

You immediately had regretted it. Who knew who else had been in that room with him. By the sounds of the muffled laughter that had echoed through the phone after your flippant remark, you could only assume that Park Jimin and Kim Seokjin had also been present to overhear your special brand of idiocy.

The rest of your conversation with Namjoon had been strained to say the least. You could hear the underlying anger in his tone. Had you really embarrassed him that much? Were you really that unattractive that the mere thought of anything sexual happening between the two of you sent him into a rage? God, you hoped not, but it looked like you were about to find out.

“(Y/n),” Namjoon growled, bursting through your office door.

You jumped out of your cushy office chair and darted behind one of the many desks of monitors littering the room. You needed a barrier between you and this sexy, angry man. “Oh hello, Namjoon,” You sent him an innocent smile, “What brings you over to see little ol’ me?”

“You know exactly why I’m here, brat.” The term rolled off his tongue sinfully, and you felt your heart falter in your chest. His dark eyes were so focused on you that you felt stripped bare under the weight of it all.

“Brat?” You exclaimed, placing a hand on your chest, “Well, I never!”

Namjoon crept closer to you, moving to circle around the very desk you were hiding behind. You mirrored his actions, intent on keeping something between you.

“I find it hard to believe that none of your previous partners have called you a brat before,” He glared, his hands clenching and unclenching like he was holding himself back from lunging for you.

Partners? Your mind exploded. Had he meant intimate partners? Or workplace partners? You thought back to all the partners you’d had during your time at the agency.

“I mean, I’m sure Yoongi has called me a brat before, but I don’t remember a specific instance,” You flipped through your memories with your former co-worker and came up short.

“You fucked Yoongi?” Namjoon halted in his tracks, his face looking like he might actually throw one of your computers out the window.

“What? No!” You gasped, “What the fuck, Namjoon! I thought you meant workplace partners - not sexual partners!”

Your analytic brain whirred as you became the living meme of the woman seeing mathematics appear in front of her eyes, “Now wait just a darn-tootin’ second... If you asked if none of my previous intimate partners had called you a brat before, and you just called me a brat… Does that mean you consider yourself to be my current intimate partner?”

Namjoon scowled at you, “I fucking hate how fast your brain works sometimes, but damn if it isn’t hot as hell.”

“Yeah?” You grinned, “You like my sexy brain?”

“Unfortunately,” He growled, looking like he wanted to devour you whole, “That and your fucking smart mouth.”

“Well, what are you going to do about it then, daddy?” You teased him. At this point, you were at least 99.9% sure that he had a daddy kink and that you had pushed him over the edge with your ‘spank me’ comment.

Quicker than you could even blink, Namjoon circled the table, turned you around, and bent you over. “I’m going to spank you, brat. Just like you suggested.”

He hiked up the skirt of your dress to show your lacy underwear. “Fuck, baby girl,” Namjoon’s fingers dragged over the damp spot between your legs, “Is that for daddy?”

You seemed to have lost the capacity to speak, and he got impatient, swatting your clothed pussy swiftly. “I asked you a question.”

“Y-yes,” You moaned, your back arching as you sought some form of contact from him.

Namjoon spanked your ass outright. Palming it in his hand to relieve the sting, he leaned over your body. His lips brushed your ear as he murmured, “Yes, what?”

“Yes, Agent Daddy.”

He drew away from you, chuckling slightly, “My, my, you really are such a brat. I’m going to have fun teaching you some discipline.”

“Just call me the teacher’s pet,” You crooned, shooting him a wicked look over your shoulder and gleefully watching his handsome face darken.

You always knew your mouth would get you in trouble someday, but you never predicted that trouble could be so hot.

Backtrack Post!

What happened in 2020? Whatever it was, it ignited a spark in me and spurned me to new levels regarding my writing output! This is a backtrack post to have one last look backwards at what I managed to generate in 2020, before we successfully move with big steps towards 2021! :D Enjoy~

Now, without further ado, a bit of a review of the year in terms of my fanfiction writing! :D As per usual, you’ll find it under the cut, folks interested in the statistical side of things! I’ll also include a bit of a cautious prediction as to what 2021 will hold in store for you, dear readers, so, for those of you curious enough to go on: have fun reading! Cheers!

I gotta say, in 2020 I’ve been productive with my fanfiction-writing like I haven’t been in all of the five years before!

My obsession with the One Piece fandom has successfully stuck with me, it’s in its second year and going strong, still! :D On top of that, I’ve lately started branching out due to various Challenges and Gift Exchanges to involve other fandoms in my writing.

In total

In 2020, I transferred all of my fanfics from ffnet over to AO3 (and tried to do vice-versa for some, although that’s tapered off quickly when I saw how much more effort that was... XD I’ll finish transferring Celebramus Vitam sometime in 2021, but that’s all that ffnet will see of me any longer, methinks...), getting my whole word count logged on AO3 for all of my years up to 404.461 words. WOHOOOO!!!

All in all, I’ve written and put online 223.371 words for all of my different fandoms in 2020 alone (I subtracted the # of words for my transferred fics there, but added the ones that dragged over from 2019 - see my reasoning for that below, those were: A Gamble in Time and An Older Brother’s Plight). Predominantly, I’ve spent my time in One Piece fanfic-land, with Yuuri! On Ice following close behind. In third place, there’s both Magic Kaito and Asterix in a tie, having each gotten one more fanfic published for their fandoms.

2020 was the year that I created a few Series to better organise my fanfics and had fun participating in Challenges. I remodeled both my Series as well as my Tumblr a few times and restructured the plot of a few of my stories as I went along. Things changed, happenings had to be changed to accomodate different outcomes and new characters made themselves known.

First and foremost, my obsession with Portgas D Ace’s character has opened the way for me to explore more characters in the OP universe: Sabo’s now a close second favourite character of mine, with Buggy as well as Shanks sharing the third place in my personal rankings. Funnily enough, Buggy has quite literally bowled me over with his charm and charisma, thank you very much @stereden, for nudging me into that one’s direction. XD

My participation in the Women! Wanted Zine (which shall be out in 2021 and which I am super looking forward to physically holding in my hands soon~ thank you @womenwantedzine for keeping the anticipation alive!!!) made me aware of how little the female characters of OP are being talked about and thus, a Shiny New Series for them was born that I try to keep adding to every now and again.

I have also taken part in Nanowrimo 2020, and, while doing that, managed to break a personal record and arrive at writing 1k+ words in 15 minutes, whenever the mood hit! That was awesome to see spelled out by the sprint bot, seriously.

Yuuri! On Ice

I wrote three fanfics for this particular fandom that I’m quite proud of, especially seeing as I wrote one within two week’s time for the Heart Attack Exchange: it’s called Theirs is a magical kind of love and it’s got 10k+ to its name. This one’s just as fluffy as the one whose name I still to this day can’t pronounce correctly (forgive me, Russian-speaking folks!): от надежды родится вечность. (copy and paste are heavenly tools sometimes XD)

Tallying the word count of all three fics I wrote up, I arrive at 36.600 words having been written for this particular fandom and I gotta say, I’m quite proud of those.

Also: don’t worry, folks, I’ll keep coming back to “IT support, how can I help?” sometime this year - it won’t be finished this year I don’t think, but it’ll be continued, for sure. ;) As of this post, it’s got 22.681 words and I have grown quite fond of the thing, all in all.

One Piece

If we count both A Gamble in Time (12734 words thus far, with chapter four in the workings already) and An Older Brother’s Plight (15333 words) to the mix (they did start being written in December of 2019), then we’re at 175.051 words written in the One Piece fandom in 2020 alone.

My most prolific writing phase of 2020 has involved my longest fanfic, Through Troubled Waters. With its 77k+ words, it is at the same time my longest one. Having that one stay a 51-chapter-fanfic is still my most ambitious project, although if things keep going as they are, I don’t see why I won’t manage that. (#famous last words)

Altogether, I wrote 44 fanfics for the One Piece fandom in 2020 alone, most of them 100-word-drabbles that nevertheless were awesome to write.

I wrote a couple of longfics and a few oneshots-that-didn’t-stay-oneshots. XD

My most popular fanfics of 2020 in this particular fandom were also the ones I kept alternating between and working on the most: An Older Brother’s Plight is at the top and already finished with 15.333 words to its name. In second place, we find Through Troubled Waters (77.048 words at the time of this post). Third place occupies Dead Man Walking with 24.034 words to its name at the time this post was written and published and fourth place goes to A Gamble in Time (12.734 words).

Most of all, I had fun, engaging with the fandom, with like-minded people, throwing lots of plotbunnies around and prompting as well as enabling people to keep creating the most amazing pieces! Seriously, the people you get to know sometimes... couldn’t have written half of all of those fanfics without you - you know who you are!!! ;)

Predictions for 2021

Currently, I am very much immersed in writing for and finishing all the still-missing chapters for Dead Man Walking, which shall be done and over with by the end of January 2021, at the latest, I hope *knocks on wood*. Once that is done, I’ll be free to look at other things again and focus on the rest of my stories, once more. Moreover, I shall polish up the whole story of Dead Man Walking and edit it to include the missing bits (there is at least one for Chapter 11 that I will not spoil for those of you patiently waiting for it!).

For anything else, I will not be making any clear-cut or detailed predictions as to when I’ll update what, I’m afraid. 😅 I’ve learned my lesson with that one...

What I can already tell you about is the following: two side-stories/spin-offs to Through Troubled Waters are already in the workings and have been since November 2020. Together, once they are finished, they’ll have about 60k words to them. Potentially, (make that very potentially. Maybe. Hopefully,) they shall start to be posted in April, seeing as then would also be the first anniversary of the main story’s fic... although they do depend on particular chapters having been published before, so, who knows? 😅

On top of all of that, I’m still working my job, I’ll be finishing as well as pursuing another degree starting in January and living my life (and keep doing other hobbies I have along with keeping up my social contacts and having fun) while the pandemic is going on. Sooooo. Not a lot of free time at all, eh? Fanfiction writing is atm my go-to for relax time and I’m hopeful it’ll stay that way in 2021.

Considering I’m doing all of this writing for free? Publishing more than 223k in a year’s time while doing all that other stuff besides? That’s a whole lot of awesome output, I’m going to pat myself on the shoulder for managing all of that while a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic is still ongoing. *pat*

So, for those of you wondering when I’ll update the next chapter to any of my fics: it’s reasonable to assume I’m either writing or taking a well-deserved break at the moment. ;) I shall keep writing fanfics, though, no worries there.

Febuwhump 2022, Day 1

Day 1: Head Wound

Description: Circuit hits his head in battle and finds he can no longer access his database or his drone. Despite the nature of the prompt, this is actually more emotional whump than physical.

Major Characters: Circuit (whumpee), Mobo (caretaker)

Minor Characters: Claw, the Engineer (emotional whumper)

Length: 1k words

Notes: NOT CANON as of yet. This takes place before the Engineer puts in the pain coding, so all pain is psychological/emotional.

CW: head trauma, mention of war

Circuit wasn’t wearing his helmet. The rain and darkness made sure of that.

“Claw,” he broadcast over his inner comm, “you have four enemies flanking—”

“I’ve got it,” Mobo interrupted.

Circuit’s drone threw its light to the ground, its rain-blurred video capturing the glint of four of Mobo’s fingers as they pierced through Claw’s adversaries and whipped them down with enough force to crush their skulls.

“Thanks, Mobo,” Claw thought back, and Circuit huffed to himself.

His heat sensors registered the rain as an unseasonably warm sixty-eight degrees Fahrenheit on average, or twenty degrees Celsius. Camped behind a Phalanx army tank, he could take solace in the information fed to him by his drone and his database. Information was predictable. Battlefields were not, no matter what the generals might say—

blue white green red yellow white orange blue gray

black.

Circuit brightened his white eyes until they glittered over the golden skin of the other Repair Unit crouched above him. Upside down.

“You okay?” Mobo asked, and it hit Circuit that he was on his back, looking up at Mobo at an angle he shouldn’t have been. A grenade burst above Mobo’s head, showering them in sparks. He didn’t flinch.

Circuit tched from the corner of his mouth. “If you don’t mind, there are others who appear to need you more than I do.”

“You got that from your drone feed?”

“Naturally,” he said, but it wasn’t quite true.

Because he couldn’t access his drone feed. He tried, withdrawing into himself and starting down the code paths to see through his drone’s video system, but he hit an obstacle he’d never encountered before. There were no code paths. His drone wasn’t simply inaccessible due to damage. It was as if it had never been a part of him in the first place.

He came at it from all angles, every possible entrance and loophole, but was answered with nothing. He sat up and leaned to the side, trying to sense the raindrops on his skin. They were warm, but no numbers corresponding to temperature surfaced in his head. He felt his armor’s rearpiece against the grass and had no idea how many pounds per square inch of pressure he was inflicting. He sent a query to look up the model of the tank he sat behind, and the query spiraled off into cyberspace with no destination. He was blind.

He must have been hit in the head with some kind of blunt shrapnel, glitching his system and erasing the code linking him to both his drone and his database. With the thought rose an uncomfortably intense feeling of panic.

Mobo frowned. “Who? Who’s in trouble?”

“I suggest you find out yourself,” he said with his usual clipped steadiness, drawing his pistol and not bothering to wave Mobo off as he got to his feet. He couldn’t very well stay here.

Not like this. Not useless like this.

The War Machines stood side-by-side in front of their compartments in the Phalanx lab, their chests puffed at attention.

“Damage report,” said the Engineer. “Not you, Lug.”

Nimble as ever, Claw’s damage was mostly to the periphery of his armor, the grazes from laser bolts barely marring the sides of his thighs and abdomen. Sharpe had the usual electrical burns from his pistol grips on the outsides of his hands, and at some point he had taken a bad round of bolts in his upper arm. Mobo had grenade burns on the back of his head as well as bursts of black all over his backpiece, which made the Engineer curl his lip, though not as much as the sight of Lug’s absolutely destroyed skin and armor.

“And you?” he asked as he turned to Circuit, expecting the usual lack of damage and raising a brow when he noticed the empty drone slot in his chest.

“I cannot access my drone or my database,” said Circuit, clearing his throat of its odd hoarseness. “I suspect there may be internal damage in my skull frame.”

He wished he didn't have to announce his incompetence in front of everyone, but as it was, he could almost feel Mobo's interest pique beside him. He tried to dig up memories of the Engineer being kind to him about similar situations, but his banks returned only vague snippets and concepts, and he was unsure if they'd been affected or if there simply were no such memories.

“So I’ll have to rebuild your drone, then.” It was flat, not a question, and Circuit didn’t nod in response. He turned to the others and gestured, annoyed as he said, “Get in your compartments and power down. I’ll complete your repairs later. Mobo, come here.”

“Yes, Engineer.”

Mobo had already lengthened his fingers. Circuit didn’t look at him at first, instead fixing his gaze on the lab door.

“Elaborate on your frame damage,” said the Engineer. “You don’t appear to be damaged outwardly. Mobo, check for weak spots.”

Circuit turned his eyes to Mobo’s as the other Repair Unit probed at his skull, pressing gently to reveal any sunken or cracked areas. At least he had the decency to look strained and awkward.

Circuit kept his expression neutral. “I’m afraid I can’t elaborate, Engineer. I theorize that blunt shrapnel forced my head into the side of the tank I was standing next to at the time. It seems the trauma to my hardware was enough to damage my access to certain code loops.”

“And why you were that close to a tank?”

“Ah… I found it a safe space for me to stand while I provided aid and information to the other Machines.”

“Clearly that didn’t work. The others have hardware damage. You're the only one with software damage. Mobo, tell me what Circuit might have done wrong.”

“Slight damage in the left temporal region,” muttered Mobo. “Stood in one spot too long.”

“He stood in one spot for too long. Sharpeye has a similar problem. I will have to see what I can do about you two. Interesting that my first Repair Unit is so much more cowardly than the other.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Mobo sent with his thoughtvoice, but Circuit didn’t reply, as if he didn't receive it.

The Engineer was clearly upset with how much work Circuit had made him do. He and Mobo would have to labor late into the night rebuilding both Circuit and his drone, and it had all been entirely preventable. Circuit knew he shouldn’t take it personally.

But that didn’t counteract the sheen of pity in Mobo’s eyes as he and the Engineer powered him down for repairs.

The spatter of red on his palm didn’t faze the blonde at all. If he closed his eyes, he could pretend it was just a splotch of fabric dye... But the footsteps were getting closer, and the clock counting down the seconds to his death was becoming more deafening.

“Adrien.” Vengeur growled through his mask, crazed blue eyes sparkling like a mutated wolf’s even in the dark of the night.

The blonde groaned as the man dressed in black yanked his wrist up violently, a sharp blow adding to the thousands that he had already received in the gut when the man realised the ring was gone.

“Where is the ring?” Vengeur yowled, a feral anger blazing in the eyes that Adrien realised were familiar to him. “Where the hell is the ring?”

Coughing weakly, the blonde managed a slight victorious smile at the man’s fury. “Somewhere safe,” Some would even say that Adrien dared to look cocky in the last moments of his life. “Somewhere you’ll never find.”

“You little...”

Adrien wasn’t surprised by the face he saw when Vengeur tore off his mask. “Luka... How did it come to this?”

“It’s all your fault.” The teal-eyed man hissed, his hand clenching into a fist that could crush mountains. “Yours and Ladybug’s. If you managed to save Marinette’s parents, she wouldn’t have left Paris behind! She wouldn’t have left me behind!”

The cries of the heartbroken man had brewed into a toxic potion of anger and fury, fuelling Vengeur’s determination to chase down the miraculous to bring back his beloved bluenette’s parents.

“Do you think I don’t regret that everyday?” Adrien choked out, more splashes of red accompanying his sorrowful words. “Do you think Ladybug doesn’t regret that everyday of her life?”

“Then you should’ve cooperated.” Said Vengeur, unsheathing the double-edged sword that he had used to chase down Chat Noir for three months. “If you’d cooperated, all we need to do is find Ladybug and her earrings, and we’d be able to bring Marinette and her parents back to Paris.”

Staring in to the face of death, Adrien spat on the blade, defiance clear in his eyes. “Marinette would never forgive you. If anything, she would run even further away from you.”

“Shut up.” Luka’s eyes were completely void of any care as his blade striked a line across Adrien’s throat, the night regaining its’ cold silence as Chat Noir bade the world goodbye.

“And Luka Couffaine has somehow convinced himself that if he can bring back Cheng’s parents, who were killed in the last akuma battle- He can convince Cheng to go back to Paris?” Damian clarified, rubbing his hands together as he sorted out all the information in his mind.

“Correct.”

“But he doesn’t know that Marinette Cheng is Ladybug.”

The black cat kwami nodded again. “Yep.”

Damian was quiet for a while, thoughts running through his mind at two hundred miles per hour. “And does Luka Couffaine know where to start looking for Ladybug? Could Chat Noir have given anything by accident?”

“No, Adrien didn’t even know that Marinette was Ladybug. He didn’t even know where Marinette went after she left Paris, either.” Plagg pointed out as-a-matter-of-factly.

“Vengeur can’t possibly be planning to search every city in the world for Ladybug?” The green-eyed detective frowned, trying to predict Vengeur’s next move on the continent-wide chessboard. “What is he going to do next?”

Plagg grimaced. “That’s what we don’t know, and what we have to figure out.”

“Well that’s helpful,” Marinette commented sarcastically, Damian’s empty desk right in the middle of her sights. “He called in sick.”

The bluenette grumbled in displeasure, going through her emails to make sure she didn’t miss anything important. One of her more recent emails caught her eye- One from an old friend.

Things aren’t pretty in Paris right now. Luka’s been consistently asking everyone where you are- He’s really worried about you, girl. Everyone’s been on edge ever since Adrien... You know. The police are still trying to track down Adrien’s killer. They haven’t disclosed any information to the public yet, but Sabrina (She’s in their crime division now, remember?) did tell me that they have a lead. Chat Noir is still nowhere to be seen, and Paris is completely defenceless. We’re all hoping the killer doesn’t strike again.

The bluenette leaned back into her chair with a sigh, rubbing the bridge of her nose in frustration. Alya was right- Paris was utterly defenceless- But she doubted the killer would make a move anytime soon. It was pretty obvious to her- The killer wanted Chat’s miraculous, and the next target would only be Ladybug herself.

Before she could continue to unpack the various events that were unfolding in Paris, another email caught her off her guard.

Back in the days of LJ, I used to try and do a post at the end of each year, looking back primarily at fandom and fic. I fell out of the habit when everything moved to tumblr, and then it seemed like I didn’t have anything to say since I wasn’t writing or really participating any.

But I always liked the idea of it, because I love to be overly reflective on stuff. And talk about my fic. Any excuse! I shuffled around some of the topics I used back then and added a few I’ve seen around that I liked. It got… long, because I TALK, so I split into two sections.

Your main fandom of the year?

Marvel (MCU) for sure. Primarily with characters from Spider-Man and Iron Man movies.

Your favorite film watched this year?

The Old Guard - I saw a couple trailers and everything about it looked like catnip. ‘It’s probably going to be so dumb, but I don’t even care,’ I thought. And then it was so good. It was so much fun and so much smarter than I expected and I loved each and every character and it just made me happy in so many ways.

Your favorite book read this year?

Red, White, and Royal Blue, Casey McQuiston - I read it twice this year actually. It’s so… cute isn’t the right world. Sweet and hopeful and soft and comforting and intense. I liked every single character which is pretty rare. I cried during the sad parts and then again at the happy ending, like straight up sobbed - both times. I already want to read it again.

Your favorite tv show watched this year?

Schitt’s Creek - I started it on a whim and because a lot of people had said it was good. The episodes were short so it wasn’t a huge time investment. The first season was a little rough, but there were enough funny moments that I hung on, and then… I kept getting fonder and fonder of these idiots as they grew. And THEN… it kept not disappointing me?

You grow to expect certain scripts, twists, jokes, especially in queer story lines. To wait for the bad thing to happen, because it always does. Instead, Schitt’s Creek kept going, ‘hey, here’s the set up for that! Guess what? We’re not doing it. Here’s the happy version instead.’ The relief of having that happen again and again - the last season I’ve watched (I’m sort of saving 6) I cried a bunch but it was always because I was happy.

Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?

1896 - I’ve been waiting for the new Steam Powered Giraffe album so eagerly for aaaaaages. Finally getting recordings of Zero’s songs! Lying Awake remains my favorite off the album, with Eat Your Heart and Bad Days on the Horizon high up there as well. I’m loving what Zero brings to the band.

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?

I don’t know if I really did discover that much? I stuck pretty closely to old fandoms and the ones I picked up in 2019. Maybe Zodiac? It was definitely inspiring, and I want to write and read more in it.

Maybe the couple discords I joined? I still really dislike discord and am not on there much, and mostly lurk when I am, but having somewhere vaguely like the comms I remember makes me feel a little less isolated. It’s the potential, that maybe if I said something I might make a friend, or someone might actually want to hear what I say.

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?

The Watch - I mean, I knew it was going to be a disaster with every word said during pre production. I wasn’t ever going to be happy with it. And then it came out and was even worse and uglier and … disrespectful not just of the source material but of actual people connected to Terry. I’m beyond disappointed that this is what we got, and it’s probably going to be a long time before we get anything else.

Devil All the Time was terrible, but I didn’t have especially high hopes. It still didn’t manage to meet them. Yikes.

The most missed of your old fandoms?

Maybe MASH? Someone I follow started talking about it and I was reminded all over again of the wonderful fics in that fandom. I went looking and a lot are gone (still on my computer, lol, but not online), but rereading was such a trip. A slightly depressing trip, but still.

The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?

Hmm. I’ve kind of not had the energy to invest in other fandoms at the moment? When The Witcher was having it’s big moment back in January, I had a feeling I might enjoy it enough to fall headfirst into the fandom, so I avoided watching it. Ikr? I don’t have the time or the energy to actively seek anything out.

Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?

SO EXCITED about Winter’s Orbit. I mean, the third Spider-Man movie for sure, with worry. The second Venom movie, ugh yes. I have tentative hopes for Jungle Cruise? Jumanji was stellar and I always enjoy Dwayne. I have both hope and dread for the new Suicide Squad - I did love Birds of Prey, so if it’s along those lines, yay. The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard because it should be some fun garbage, my favorite kind. I don’t know how I feel about Dune, but, uh, I’m anticipating it. It seems highly unlikely it will actually happen, but The Wheel of Time TV series.

I want to be excited about Black Widow but it’s hard. It’s not the story I’ve been wanting to see, and I’m angry about Natasha not getting a movie until she’s dead.

You know. If any of it is released for real.

The Good:

I moved to a better place. I got a better paying, better benefits, better environment job that lets me work from home. The house acquired 3-7 more cats depending on the month. I was able to get some serious problems on my car fixed. I have insurance and was able to start on some health stuff. No one I know got sick or died. I wrote a LOT.

The Bad:

Aside from the obvious? Depression hitting extra hard during the winter. Having to put two kittens to sleep. Have my car be hit three times in our parking lot. Being driven INSANE by one of the cats for months while the vets were all closed. Kidney stone. Dealing with several health problems. Stalling for months on Gotcha.

The Indifferent:

Not leaving the house often or easily. Enjoying a new fandom but not doing great at making connections (still real awkward, bud). Raising kittens and saying goodbye. Need new tires. Reading a lot of fic but not a lot of books. Having more pay but more expenses as well (wth insurance??).

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?

SO MUCH MORE OMG. I mean, even just counting posted stuff! (I probably wrote a solid 300k of Gotcha this year.) I did not expect or plan on doing Kinktober, so that’s a whole 31 fics right there. I also wasn’t planning on doing any exchanges - I have a History - but then I did three? And beyond that, I did not expect for everything to get so LONG.

Topic you wrote that you would never have predicted in January:

Tony/Quentin. Goddammit @the-me09 They were like hey, they could be interesting! And while I agreed, I had no ideas for them. THEN they had to go and write Just Bodies That Collide and next thing I know, I’ve got ten fics featuring them and two-six series focused on them or Peter/Quentin/Tony. What the fuck.

Leitmotif of the year:

Vulnerability, I think. I had a bunch of things typed up and they all circle back to vulnerability in the end; sex, being seen, being wanted, sharing trauma, asking for help, trying something new. Offering a soft spot in the hopes it won’t be hurt.

Favorite character to write about:

Tony Stark, for sure. There are just a bunch of slightly different takes, and a lot of canon to work with (kind of frustrating too though). And I’m a sucker for emotionally damaged snarky traumatized characters that are viewed poorly both in universe and out.

Favorite kind of fic to write:

This year? Fluff and smut combined. Maybe that’s not the right term really. I keep looking for and writing, even in the angstiest fics, for those soft moments. Sure, maybe it’s a super smutty kink scene, but I want the affection to be obvious. Maybe everyone is consumed by guilt, but I want it to be based in caring too much. Maybe there’s no real love, just sex and even that’s messed up, but I want to find that tiny bit of fondness.

And I want happy endings. Or endings that look like they’re going to be happy, at least, even if there’s all the angst first. I don’t think I’ve killed anyone this year? Who AM I?

Biggest disappointment:

Not finishing the rough draft of Gotcha. I was making such good progress in 2019, from August to December. Even after the move, I basically finished part 6 in January. I fumbled around and fussed with 1 a lot, but that had already been given one draft, really, and I got through half of 4 before I slowed to a stop. I’ve barely gotten anything accomplished on it since June. Bits and pieces here and there, but nothing significant, not like I was doing. I can excuse October, due to 80k invested in Kinktober (yikes!), but aside from that… I’m sad. I’ll finish it eventually, but I really thought I could have the first draft done in a year. I’m sitting at about 480k out of what I’m almost certain will be 700k.

Biggest surprise:

Kinktober! It was kind of spur of the moment, decided just a week in advance. I’ve tried month long or even like, 20-25 day long challenges and I don’t think I’ve ever completed one. I thought there was a good chance I’d do so again, so I gave myself a little help and made my own list of prompts, things I knew I liked and hadn’t done much of yet. And it worked? I actually completed it, what the hell? Despite spending five days travelling near the end! Despite falling behind in getting ahead and writing a bunch of stories the day they were to be posted! Despite apparently forgetting how to do short form!

I, uh, could have done without the spawning of eleven series or sequels or continuations jfc WHY SELF.

Something you learned this year:

Ideas breed ideas. I swear to god, the second I sit down to think through a current idea, I wake up the next morning with three more.

Words need to be restocked. I need to consume new - not rereads, not fic - content every so often to refresh my word bank. It is astonishing how quickly writing goes again after I’ve done so.

I can write so much more than I thought I could. I can do so much more than I thought I could. Yes, I can complete challenges without dropping out early. Yes, I can do exchanges and not regret it. Yes, I can write more than 100k, more than 200k, more and more - and I can write 10k+ easily too. Though I wouldn’t mind if I could once again write less than 10k without feeling like I’ve cut off in the middle.

My time is shrinking, and if I want to write as much, I’m going to have to make the time. I can’t rely on three days off a week, on seven hours of uninterrupted overnight shifts, on hyper focused writing binges that leave everything else around me on fire.

Most memorable comment:

So, so many! I can’t pick one. I’ve been really lucky to get a bunch of really detailed, enthusiastic, analyzing comments across all different fics. One of the types that always sticks with me are the ones like ‘I didn’t think/know I liked this ship/kink/twist, but fuck, apparently I do? You made me, what the hell?’.

What, if anything, are you going to try to do differently in your writing in the new year?

So with writing Gotcha but not posting until it’s done, my view of what I’ve written vs anyone else’s is extremely skewed. I’m sitting here thinking, hey I’m 400k in and got another 10k done today, so much writing! While anyone looking at my AO3 account (for most of the year) is like, you’re averaging three months between fics :(

All that to say I want to try and get something posted more frequently while I’m working on Gotcha.

Also, writing for kinktober was really interesting - pushing myself to write every single day, often for that day’s post, forced me to get back into shorter form fic. Which used to be all I did? But it was surprisingly hard to just stop and not write more. So I’d like to challenge myself to write more fics under 10k at least. Maybe even under 5k though that might be asking a lot lol. I might get there with the many continuations of those fics I’d like to do. Does that count?

Goals:

I want to hit 365 fics. :) I’m only 32 away!

Aside from writing -

I’ve really enjoyed the reading record sideblog I started this year. I’ve let it lapse a little the past month or so, but I’d like to keep it going strong.

I’d like to leave a lot more comments. I want to get better about allowing imperfection - I want to write The Best Comment, but in the end? Probably 90% of fic writers are going to be happier with a comment expressing enjoyment in any way over no comment at all.

And not just on fics, but on general posts as well. It’s hard not to feel… weird and stupid and invasive and rude leaving any sort of comment on someone’s post if I don’t know them at least a little. I have godawful rejection sensitive dysphoria and a lot of interactions that ended poorly; I’m really not good at people. But as dumb as it feels to say those things, I know I am thrilled and warmed and happier when there’s a reblog with tags or a note or a comment or an ask or just, any small interaction that shows someone out there notices and cares, at least a little. There’s no reason I can’t at least try to offer that to other people.

I’d like to make/run a couple challenges of my own, later in the year. I’m still figuring out what I want to do and what I could do. I’m really interested in doing something that’s not focused on creators, but the readers; some sort of comment or rec challenge maybe.

I want to find a cheerleader for Gotcha. I’m struggling to keep up my motivation to write it when it’s already in my head, where I can ‘read’ it any time. There’s a line between depending too much on external validation and trying to generate all your validation yourself, and I’m getting to a point where I think I need to ask for help (gasp! The hardest thing EVER).

Beside him, Bucky shifts in his sleep, turns over so he's facing Steve. His eyes are closed and his mouth is parted, and Steve can see the dark shadow of his hair spread across the pillow like an ink-stain.

Happy Memori Week!!!

Without further ado please enjoy my first (unedited and mostly incomplete) fanfic! 1k+

Memori Week day 1: Post season 4-The Ark

Emori had pretty much no idea what to expect from living in space, but this wasn't it.

Their lives still hadn't fully set in to the Ark yet. They were all still anxiously waiting for the first crop of algae to come in as they watched their stocked food supply slowly dwindle to nearly nothing. Raven and Monty said that everything was ok, that the algae was growing at the predicted rate, but Emori had lived through too many food shortages to completely believe them, even as she would visit the farm per request to help and could see the blooms growing herself. The temperature regulators had finally decided to kick in regularly, making the entire ring much more comfortable. This seemed to relax all the Skaikru-born, but a brief shared glance with Echo let her know that the Azgeda spy was just as bewildered with the fact that they wouldn't be experiencing the changing of the seasons for the next several years as she was. The rise and fall of the seasons was almost sacred to all Grounders, even Emori; it yielded food and game before taking it away, offering fruits and festivals depending on the length of day vs. night, giving the people a way to mark time. That seemed to make much more sense than Skaikru's method of timekeeping, with their ever-changing digital numbers when nothing else ever changed. It made the passage of time seem almost pointless if nothing else ever changed with it.

Still, with how alien and discomforting the Ark was, the sight of the ground itself was worse. That might have been the worst part for both John and Emori. While still learning each other on the ground and bewildered at the prospect of running off with a boy who fell from the sky, Emori had said that living on a floating space station must have been at the very least interesting. John's answering snort had convinced her she was wrong, but soon enough after when they had finally found refuge from the rapidly cooling weather with the shared heat of their bodies cocooned in a small mountain of furs, he had quietly confessed to her that the one redeeming quality about the Ark was the view of the ground; spectacular blues and greens and browns and whites, nothing like the drab grays of the station. It was alluring, promising, otherworldly, and when they had first landed on Earth was an absolute dream come true.

Never mind the horrors that would almost immediately follow.

So, the prospect of seeing this view that John had spoken so reverently of was somewhat exciting for Emori, and a welcome distraction from the last days they had been though. Only when John had lead her an the Earth-facing window, the Earth was on fire. Just...fire. Nothing but destruction, devastation, pain. It had been too much for John to take in that moment, Emori could see, and she reached for him to turn him away and make him disappear into her arms before he could disappear into himself.

That had been two months ago. Now, they only looked out of windows facing the other way.

Emori thought of all this as she made her way back to the room they shared, as far away from the other few Ark residents as possible. It was a longer walk from the makeshift workroom that Raven had created for herself, who she had been assisting in any way she could. She and John had decided early on that their scavenging and thieving skills weren't going to cut it in their new situation, and that in order to survive beyond the next five years more useful skills were going to need to be developed. This made Emori ask Raven (the only other person whom Emori would consider to be possibly trustworthy enough to not judge and hurt her outright for her hand) if she wouldn't mind taking her on as an apprentice. Emori hadn't anticipated Raven's reaction.

Which was how Emori found herself for several hours a day studying reading, writing and more advanced counting and math than she ever needed on the ground scavenging tech. When Raven had first offered to train her as a mechanic, she had thought it was a joke. She was leagues behind Raven, the new Spacekru's most valuable and irreplaceable member. Raven was a genius. Emori was a frikdriena.

"You act like that's supposed to affect your brain," Raven told her, gesturing to her hand. "We all have extra baggage we're carrying around. Just ask Murphy." Emori didn't know quite how to respond to her bringing up what John had done to her, especially when she was trying to get in good with her. She decided to change the subject, or rather, change it back.

"I can't do what you do," Emori protested. "I just thought I would help you with what I could, hand you tools...anything you'd need."

"You really wanna help us all? Let me teach you the real stuff. I can't be the only zero-G mechanic up here. Monty can do lots of things, but our skills don't line up perfectly. What happens if three years from now my leg fails on me while I'm climbing through the vent systems trying to fix whatever Bellamy fucked up because he didn't want to tell me their was a problem, and I fall down the shaft and break my neck? Whose gonna get the rest of this lot back down to the ground?"

Emori couldn't help but role her eyes. For some reason it sounded like something John would say. "I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen."

"'Course it's not, but my point still stands. I may be awesome, but that doesn't mean I'm indestructible." She gestured to her leg again. "There may come a time when there's things I'm not able to do, for any number of reasons. And we need to survive up here for years." She completely stopped whatever she was doing with the random jumble of wires sticking out of the wall and looked Emori dead in the eye to make sure she understood what she was saying. "We need another engineer. There's no other person up here that would be better for that than you."

"Anyone up here would be better for that than me! I don't know anything about... any of this!" Emori was frustrated and worse, felt inadequate. It was a feeling she hated, even if she felt it more often than she cared to admit. She wished Raven would drop it.

But Raven didn't. "You do know about all this. More than you realize. You already know way more about this than any other grounder I've met. Most of them look at this stuff and just break it. You see the value in it, how it's useful. That's half the battle of mechanical ingenuity right there. Bellamy and Harper have no inclination for this stuff. Don't even get me started on Echo or Murphy. I think you would be the most likely to pick it up."

"I...I don't know enough about Ark stuff. I couldn't even read these manuals well enough to learn anything. I can't do this, Raven! I'm not a genius!"

Raven's not backing down at her outburst. "Says who?" she replies. It's one of the most ridiculous thing Emori's ever heard. It's one of the most beautiful things Emori has ever heard. Raven doesn't stop there. "Sure, you didn't grow up on the Ark, didn't learn this stuff as a kid, but who cares? If you had, I'd bet you'd be an engineer already, or something like it. But you can learn now. I had to start small, too. Learn your letters, then your words, then before you know it you'll be rerouting the temperature control system from the main engine room to Go-Sci, too." She held up the mess of wires again with a grin. "Rewarding work, truly. Now, are you going to take me up on my offer, my young apprentice, or are you gonna stick with turning those two knobs to water the algae farm every day? What seems more useful to you?"

Emori couldn't pass up the offer after that. As much as she hated to admit it to herself, the idea of being as important as Raven (being seen as important to her new people at all) was too much to deny.

John was, unsurprisingly, vehemently supportive of this. He offered to tutor her extra on reading and writing, even if he could only be helpful at the preliminary stages of her education. Every night before falling asleep together they would lie in bed ( how lucky they all were that the Go-Sci Ring also included several sets of living quarters) and practice reading off the tablet they had managed to convince Bellamy and Monty they deserved to keep, since anyone else could access the Ark information they needed from the tied-in computers in the main hull. And Raven was right. Emori's learning curve was sharp and soon enough she would graduate from reading-practice programs to science textbooks.

John had a different goal in mind. Spurred by Emori's own advancement and the group's new Clarke-less state that everyone else refused to think about, he made a bold decision himself. "Well somebody has to know how to patch up Raven when she actually falls down that vent shaft," He told Bellamy when asked why the hell he decided to study to become some kind of amateur pseudo-medic. Raven had stuck her tongue out at him. "And you already know how amazing I am at supporting unconscious people's heads."

Later he had told Emori, "An engineer and a medic. No one would ever call us disposable again."

Still Stuck In The WIP Folder A treat for Yuletide that I’m only half way in, will probably try and finish it either for NYR, or stalk my recip and see if they request it in another fic exchange to treat them there.

The RomCom I started for Unconvential Courtship, in which Alec and Magnus only get together years later at the Clace Wedding, and need to Fake Date For Political Reasons. Currently at 13k, 5 chapters in, at least 10 to go.

The Cupid AU in which Alec is a cupid who shoots Magnus for someone else in 1700, cue 400 years of pining. 2k in, got boggled down by historical research and magic wordlbuilding.

The Chess Date, sequel to the First Date Fic, 1k so far, but got stuck.

About 5k worth of various outlines and plotideas, including the Phoenix!Alec fic, a bunch of fic ideas for the World Inverted AU, the Izzy and Alec are parabatai fic, more Kate Daniels fusion, and the DragonHeart AU which I plan to co-write with siri.

So much to write and finish!

Overall Thoughts: Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?

This year I published more words than in all my other years of fandom combined! Other milestones include: posted over 100k words total to my AO3, posted my first smut (which also was my first PWP), and participated in over 10 challenges. I also think I wrote more this year than I ever did before, but I’m not entirely sure because I didn’t count words for unfinished things in 2015.

Wrote exactly 0 words original work this year, which I didn’t see coming either. Guess the new fandom took it all out of me.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?

Shadowhunters, the new shiny fandom of my heart. I didn’t expect I’d ever feel about a show like I did about Spartacus, and it’s not completely the same, but fuck I am INVESTED, and I am still super inspired. It’s just a canon with many many hooks for me to grab on to, and I guess I have. Only two more stories to go, and it’s officially the fandom I’ve written most for, never did see that coming.

Did you take any writing risks this year?

I wouldn’t call it risk taking per se, but I did leave my comfort zone and had a bunch of fanfic first times. I wrote Star Wars (which is super intimidating fandom wise for some reason), I actually wrote for a lot of fandoms I hadn’t written for before. I wrote smut and PWP, and I even wrote a fill for a kinkmeme.

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the new year?

Goal for next year is definitely to let my kink flag fly more, and write the things I’d like to see more of. Try my hand at some f/f smut.

I’d really like to keep writing steadily, so I’ve signed up for Get Your Words Out, to keep my output steadily.

I also really want to finish my WIPS, especially the RomCom, because First Chaptered Story if I do.

And I’d like to get back into my Original Work. I actually have a lot of half finished stories and plot outlines lying around, I really want to finish something next year.

On the wishlist is also to participate in NaNoWriMo again next year, but the job might get in the way of that alas.

My favorite story of the year:

Fuck this is hard, because I’m one of those people that writes mostly to still my own hunger, so I tend to really like my own stories (I laugh a lot at my own jokes as well). I guess it would be all that is loved does now glitter, because it gets me right in the id of feelings. It’s the story of myself I’ve reread most. Also, slap fights.

My best story of this year:

I think reeds growing out of my fingertips. I thought if the basic plotline while driving through four european countries at night, and the last image, of the posessed girl diving off the damm was the first thing I came up with. Jukebox is very close to origfic, and I think I really got the creepiness and plot right with this one.

My most popular story of this year:

By hits, kudos, comments and bookmarks all that is loved does now glitter wins by a landslide. I guess because it’s porn with feelings and features Magnus being his magical self.

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:

Sing, Antoninus for the Kubrick Spartacus. I adapted Latin Poetry for this story, yo. I love all things Spartacus, but the Kubrick movie is very precious to me, and I wish more people still felt that way. Alas, there’s not much of a fandom for this movie, so no one thinks of looking up fic for it.

Most fun story to write:

Sometimes I really like cracky fic, and I tend to be the only one who finds myself funny, so probably either the Dairy Farmer Thing, or A Positive Result. The funnest experience was totally working together with Siri and Ray for Podtogether though, nothing beats that.

Story with the single sexiest moment:

Alec coming because Magnus’ toe ring scrapes his calf in a little too much could never be enough. Runner up would probably be Alec kissing Magnus’ toe ring in the same story. Magnus and his jewellery is pretty much the sexiest thing in fandom, imo.

Story with single sweetest moment:

If we’re going for sweetest then I’d pick Izzy distracting Alec with fashion choices in Nothing In This World, because all the Sibling Feelings always. If we’re going for sappiest then I’d pick the Beauty & the Beast Library scene from Take My Hand And Close Your Eyes because Magnus being magical with his magical mood lightning and Alec being in awe.

Hardest story to write:

Definitely A Force To Be Reckoned with, because Star Wars is intimidating as fuck to write for if you never have written in that canon before. Plus there was the whole first time smut writing aspect, and the sex with the Force thing, so I struggled a lot. Still super pleased with the end result though.

Easiest story to write: Glitter By The Waterfront practically wrote itself. I just really love writing in the Kate Daniels setting (I wish it took off like Hogwarts AUs, honestly, it's just so fun, and the magic is so awesome), and Alec and Magnus fit so well there. I pretty much wrote it in a day which almost never happens. Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: Before writing Running Out Of Days, I never really took Ripley's grief for her daughter into account. Or well, I knew she was mourning, but it wasn't part of the emotional impact for me. Writing Amanda as both Ripley's daughter and the Drift Partner she lost really hammered that home for me though, and I now watch Aliens differently.

Favorite Title: all that is loved does now glitter, with miles ahead. I'm just proud of thinking of it, it fits Magnus and the story so well, and it's the only title I ever got a compliment about (and by someone not even into the fandom! although I lured them in by now). I'm just ridiculously fond of it. Favourite Opening Line: The song of her sisters is sweet and mellow, a brook flowing over pebbles, made round and soft by water and time. (x) Favourite Closing Line: “I don’t need to find them,” he said and kissed Magnus again. “I’m already the happiest I can be. I picked you.” (x)

Favorite Line from Anywhere: Here in this bathroom, while he looks like a disco ball threw up on him, with Magnus standing next to him, looking soft and thoroughly bedded and touching him so tenderly, he truly, finally feels like he belongs. (x)

Did you know freemium is the combination of the words “free” and “premium”?

Firebase freemium is the pricing strategy by Google that is provided free of charge, but you need to spend money on getting additional features and services.

Free service helps in promoting the app when people get addicted to the free service; they tend to buy the premium version of the product sooner or later.

It’s not only Firebase, but thousands of companies have also adopted the freemium model to attract a huge audience like Dropbox, Google Drive, Zoho and many more.

A/B Testing: You can distribute your app to a specific no of users to check which app version is better. It’s free in Firebase. Know about how to contact A/B Test using Firebase with remote config.

Analytics: It predicts your app analysis. Learn Events in Analytics.

App Distribution: It distributes your app to trusted testers.

App Indexing: It helps your app to be indexed on Google and other search engines.

In App-Messaging: It helps you to engage with users who are actively using your app.

Cloud Messaging: Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) was formally known as Google Cloud Messaging. It is used to send push notifications & messages on iOS, Android and web applications.

Crashlytics: It helps you to understand how many crashes occur in your app. Learn how to use firebase Crashlytics.

Dynamic links: Dynamic links are the app link that works differently depending on the operating system and can be used to redirect the users from one platform to another.

Remote config: You can easily configure some basic functionality of your app through remote config like changing color, hide & display text, etc.

Performance Monitoring: You can easily monitor your app performance.

Predictions: It’s a machine learning tool from Firebase that helps you to analyze better whether a particular user will return to your app or not.

Firebase is generous and provides you services, no matter how much you use.

Spark (Free) Plan & Blaze (Paid) Plan

Now it’s time to analyze other services of Firebase which are limited and paid for the app owners.

Authentication: Authentication is beneficial for the user. It gives you 10k/ month authentication and after 10k you have to give 1cent/query (For Canada, India) and 6 cents for the rest of the world. We’ve written the complete series about Authentication.

Cloud Firestore: Cloud Firestore is the new database and recommended by Firebase. It gives you 1 GiB total storage, which is a high amount in terms of textual data and you don’t easily hit write and read permission too early. If you are hitting this limit with small users, make sure your app is bug-free.

Cloud Functions: Cloud function specification is good in the free plan. Invocation 125k/month is a good figure. If you are hitting above this figure, then you might be earning from your app. Also, the Blaze Plan is affordable. Learn more about Firebase Cloud Functions.

Hosting: Gives you good hosting storage in spark plan but charges in Blaze Plan are quite reasonable. Also, it gives you free SSL & multiple sites per project. Learn how to upload a static website on Firebase hosting.

ML kit: Machine learning kit is used if you are working with machine learning. It is a great tool you should use in your project. AI & ML gives you precise information. 1k images/project is good for small apps. Maybe you should go to premium if you are working on big apps.

Real-time Database: One of the best things regarding a Realtime database is they give you free & unlimited read, write permission. Learn how to use Firebase Database

Storage: Cloud Storage might not be cheap, especially if you are building a photo-sharing or video type platform, then it might be costly for you. But trust me, other companies are also charging a high amount in terms of storage. If you want to compare storage with other services, then take a look at Firebase vs AWS. Learn more about how to use Firebase Storage.

Test Lab: Gives you free 5 tests/day on real devices and 10 tests/day on virtual devices which is a reasonable amount if you are just an individual developer. But if you are a big software company, you should purchase a blazing plan whose price is also reasonable if you are from the USA and the UK based company and maybe this price feels big for Asian countries like India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Google Cloud Platform: If you are dealing with a high amount of data then you segregate your data into Big Query (a platform from Google) then obviously you can easily generate that income which is fair enough to pay the bills.

Blaze (Paid) Plan Calculator

You can also use a Firebase plan calculator to calculate your app cost and then pay as you go.
