OK OK so new trailer. No Cole, Jay, or Zane this time, people are freaking out about the Krux and Lilly lookin guys, but I'm here to ask.

WHO ARE THESE GUYS

I mean the obvious answer is that they're just the generic villain faction with little to no importance or depth BUT they look cool and I wanna know what they are OK like where did they come from the little skrunklies.

ALSO while all the mechs are doing their race thing there's just this guy cruising along at the back

I feel like this guy is just some oni or dragon or smthn. Like... the purple markings... that or some newly introduced species. Or they'll pull a Benthomaar and just never explain it. Also I find it hilarious how we already have Cole using hammers and stuff and then this random guy comes in and not only flexes on him by actually appearing in the trailer but then one ups him by whipping out a massive warhammer with more gold abd over the top accents like dang bro he's not even HERE. (I'm sorry)

Honestly I just saved this for personal use if I end up drawing Sora. Also give them cat claws for weapons. I don't really have any particular reason except for it'd make for awesome action scenes and be thematically fiting.

Okay everyone is focusing on "Oh it looks like Lilly" but are we gonna talk about the puzzle dice thing the magician dude is holding. That looks like something plot relevant.

Okay so this kinda looks like the realm of madness what with the grundle (they're called smthn I CAN'T REMEMBER IT craglings??? ) looking guys, the purple mist, the atmosphere... which If so is awesome because that place kind of just vanished after season 1. That, or it could be the spirit cove, what with.. yknow.. the dragons... or it's some random other realm that will never be seen again. That too.

Also, I will say, seems like a pretty odd choice to have two random ice dragons in Cloud Kingdom.

Honestly I'm going to point out that these ice dragons and the big dragon at the end of the trailer have the exact same color scheme - especially on the wings - as Zane and Cole's dragon forms, respectfully. (But I will also point out that both ice dragons have this color scheme so I'm like 99% sure that's just a coincidence and they just wanted to give them cool gold accents.)

I WILL say, this is probably the most excited I've been for a Ninjago season ever since Master of the Mountain 👀 and to those worrying about Cole, Jay and Zane - Cole and Jay are in the first trailer, don't worry about it. It'll make more sense when the season comes out, I'm willing to bet that the new characters are going to take the lead and the Ninja are gonna have side plots.

Also personally I don't think that's Lilly - or at the very least, not the Lilly we know - primarily because I don't really see why they'd bring her back over literally anybody else, since out of all our dead characters she never really was intended to have any sort of story or arc, she had her story a long time ago when she was a ninja. She already did her thing. Her role is entirely in the marks she left on the world. If they were gonna do something with a Ninja's parent I don't think she'd be the go to pick. But that's just me.

It'd be interesting if she WAS, because that'd mean another Cole arc which YES PLEASE, but I don't think it's likely.

I'm not gonna touch up on the krux guy because it'd make a lot of sense but like why hide his face with nothing more than a tiny visor if you're gonna make some sort of reveal. I mean if it is Krux then this is the guy who disguised himself as Dr. Saunders but now he can't even fathom changing his hair style. I feel like if it is krux then the whole thing is a red herring to get the community talking when really we'll just be told "Oh yeah that's krux" when the episodes come out, or it'll turn out to be a completely different guy.

If you're talking about the actual userpages that all wikis have, yes, those are one's own page, like a profile/info page on LJ or DW. This is part of the wiki format. Here's what my own looks like on Wikipedia, for example.

The user fills it out themselves. On many wikis, people use them to list what projects they're working on on the wiki, what languages they speak, what their areas of expertise are, etc. The talk page of that userpage becomes a place to leave direct but public messages coordinating wiki activities. Mine on Wikipedia has people thanking me for work, complaining about edits they thought were bad, discussing restructuring pages in ways that require getting community consensus, etc.

Fanlore user pages tend to have fannish bios on the page and nothing on the talk page because Fanlore isn't as active, but these talk pages are a valuable tool for collaboration on a wiki.

Plenty of fans also have a regular Fanlore article that is not their userpage if they're a well-known fan or if someone just decided to make one. I think most fans would be better off not reading their own, let alone editing it. Your impact on history is for other people to decide.

By "Wiki's side", do you mean Wikipedia? If so, I'll just tell you now that people calling Wikipedia "Wiki" is even more of a pet peeve of mine than people calling fanfiction.net "Fanfiction" and for the same reasons.

(Yes, before anyone asks, people do actually refer to FFN as "Fanfiction", as in: "I can't remember whether I read it on AO3 or Fanfiction".)

PPOV is a confusing policy if you aren't used to it. I think some people who also aren't familiar with Wikipedia and the like think it means you can't correct misinformation.

My view is that it is absolutely fine to delete "This Japanese word means ___" if it's incorrect and replace it with something accurate.

The PPOV part is that when someone has posted "Many fans hate a/b/o because ___", instead of deleting that, you add counterpoints from fans who like a/b/o or fans who see the specific anti-a/b/o argument as spurious. I also think it's fine to tone down a "most fans think" to a "some fans think" along with adding counterarguments.

It's less "There are no right or wrong answers! Everyone is always equally correct!" and more "Here's a list of things people think or remember, plenty of which will contradict each other".

The basic problem Fanlore faces is that Wikipedia-style notability requirements are typically used to remove content about niche subcultures and about the sorts of people and things who don't make the news or don't make the right news in the right languages in the right countries.

PPOV is attempting to solicit more oral history type information but without just letting the first person who gets to the article decide what reality is for the rest of us forever.

Alright my au preferences. This is weird and I got a mini rep about it over on r/fanfiction but I absolutely adore role reversal aus. Like yes, give me a story where the characters roles are reversed. And this goes so far as changing the hero and villain's roles.

But at the same time, a big pet peeve of mine is when I find a fic that does a premise like this, but also majorly changes the character's personality to where they aren't the actual character. Confusing, but what I mean is when like a hero and villain switch roles, and the swap!villain has the original hero's personality and vice verse.

this is actually a pretty good take! it's not really my thing, I've read a couple, and the OOC thing is one of the main things that drives me away. if we have an idealistic hero turned into a villain who is permanently grumpy and loathes the world, are we really reading about the character at all? doesn't it make more sense that them being a villain is out of some mislead ideal, some hope for a better future? I dunno if this makes sense, but I feel your pain there

Something I’ve noticed about being Non-binary

so, like, recently I’ve been noticing a pattern with new people I’ve been meeting, in that a lot of them only refer to me as she/her after i tell them that I’m nonbinary (for reference, I’m amab and fem leaning) which is funny, because like, I’m gender fluid, and you could literally just refer to me as a guy and i really wouldn’t care, for me personally, it’s just about the freedom of expression, and i don’t personally care about the pronouns. People tend to treat me as a little bean who needs protecting, and maybe it’s just the circle that I’m currently in, but it’s kind of annoying, because it really doesn’t reflect who i am as a person. As someone who is transitioning, it’s not like i don’t deal with shit, and it’s not like i don’t fear dealing with that shit, but it’s more the fact that personally, i *do* deal with that shit, and i have my own mechanisms for coping with it, and i really don’t need people to go “aww precious i feel so bad for you” every single time something mildly inconvenient happens to me, because like, i can take care of myself, I’ve been doing it my whole life, and i don’t know, maybe it’s just a pride thing, but it’s kind of invalidating, and it kind of annoys me when people try to “protect” trans people, because, like, the vast majority of us can take care of ourselves. I’m not a good Girl, and I don’t need protecting, so, its’ annoying when people exclusively call me she/her, presumably because they’re afraid I’ll get upset by it. you don’t get to decide people’s pronouns for them, and that’s not what I’m trying to say, I’m more just saying that like, i explicitly tell people that they can call me whatever they want and then they like just call me one thing, and like, i get it, pronouns can be really annoying for non trans people, but the thing is that I’m literally offering you the freedom to call me anything you want, and you’d rather just stick to one thing? i dunno, it’s just kind of a pet peeve of mine, and so i decided to write a whole tumblr essay on it.

It is… a pet peeve of mine, but I hate how neurodivergent symptoms and/or disabilities are always viewed as a thing you have to “grow past” because being ~independent~ and not having to rely on anyone is the ideal. As if humans aren’t a social species and as if self sufficiency is a myth because we’ve always took care of each other until capitalism ig.

I think that’s why I get satisfaction out of Fry being allowed to be himself and being with someone who doesn’t need him to change because he screams ADD and autistic to me. It’s genuinely so weird to me that Fry is framed as needing to “mature” for Leela too because he’s like, what? In his mid 20s at the start of the series and a decade passes over the course of the show… so the idea that he would suddenly change dramatically into his 30s in a way that means erasing inherent parts of how his brain works to have Leela finally date him is so weird to me.

Like if Fry was just written to be immature, maybe, sure, but he’s written as so much beyond that? The “immature” traits are often not… immaturity but neurodivergent traits. so I dunno!!

Let Bender baby him please it makes me :’) smile and tear up because it’s so god damn cute how happy they both are in their routine and you never see Bender get that way for anyone either (even the fembots he liked, he was far more restrained and less intense than he is towards Fry)…

As a personal experience addition: I’ve internalized so much shame for things like being hella ADHD and I’ve been shamed as immature because of things that were just neurodivergency, so the idea of Fry having to just stop being the way he is or outgrow it or suddenly become self sufficient to provide for someone else makes me viscerally uncomfortable in the same way it makes me uncomfortable to see Leela having to take care of Fry.

The entire pitfall for me is just how the writers clearly view relationships.

Surprisingly, I really like the music in this. I don't usually like electronic music, but this one was nice. His voice isn't my favourite, but is still good. NOW THE LYRICS!! Oh dear. Oh my. Oh boy. I was not expecting to catch feelings for Lucifer today, sir. How dare you do this to me. Update: I just got to the second verse...He's a yandere. He is fucking yandere. He's still so full of himself as usual and I WANT TO PUNCH HIM IN THE FACE BUT I ALSO WANT TO KISS HIM GAAAAAAAH!!!!! LUCIFER YOU ASSHOLE! UPDATE UPDATE: FINAL VERSE! AND THEN THE PRICK GOES BACK TO BEING A ROMANTIC CHARMING LITTLE SHIT 😡😣😖 Final thoughts: I- I- this whole song was a rollercoaster. I love to hate lucifer and hate to love him. I really do. This song embodied that perfectly. I did enjoy the song though.

Opening thought. I am not ready. Very not ready. Mammon is amazing in that art 😍.

Okay, now being serious, I'm sorry Mammon. I adore you to BITS, like so so so much. But this is exactly the kind of EDM that I despise. BUT, I bore through it and kept listening. I don't hate his voice, but he's sing talking. He's not quite rapping, he's sing talking. So it's meh. FUCKING UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE: THE CHORUS!!!! THE MF CHORUS!!!! HE SINGS! HE CAN ACTUALLY SING (still not best but pretty good)?! AND THE MUSIC SOUNDS SO MUCH BETTER THERE WHEN IT'S SLOW- ... ... ... the auto-tune on his voice on that English line 😤 WHY?!! I WAS JUST GETTING INTO IT!!!

Lyrics time: Honestly, it feels like Mammon got drunk, picked up a mic and started singing to MC, and I mean that in the best way possible. He's being honest in a way we've never seen him be honest before, and he calls himself a tsundere 😂 I love it.

Now the chorus lyrics: I love the chorus. It's so Mammon and just perfect. I love it. The lyrics just- *sighs* it's that possessive side of him that makes him the dork that he is. Okay. t-the lyrics...the lyrics also give me MAJOR suggestive vibes and I'm just here like 😳😳😳 MaMmOn PlEaSe WhAt ArE YoU DoInG?!

Final thoughts: The lyrics are also quite repetitive, which is another pet peeve of mine. All in all, it's not bad. It's just not for me. I'm so sorry Mammon 😭😭😭 That being said, I think it suits Mammon fairly well. Not perfectly, but good.

Leviathan / My Chance:

Opening thoughts: THIS TITLE IS SO CUTE AND IT'S PERFECT FOR HIM uwu Also, the vintage game-esque music is just perfect for Levi's aesthetic. Like, the light piano mixed with it gives me Undertale vibes?? Even before he starts singing, I just think it's really cute and it makes me want to hug him. Again, I'm not in love with his voice, but it's still nice. I do enjoy it.

Lyrics: LEVI BABY ARE YOU OKAY?! SOMEONE GET THIS MAN A THERAPIST 😭😭😭

Chorus: It's so sad, but this is Levi's reality. This song embodies him and everything he is so so so well. It really is perfect for him. But seriously bro. Let me hug you. And then we're gonna work on your self-worth issues because oh boy That last verse though. Oh my goodness 🥺🥺 It is the very definition of pining.

AND THEN THE FINAL CHORUS!!! HE'S BEING SO HONEST ABOUT HIS ANXIETY AND I JUST- 😭😭😭😭 LEVIIIIIIIIII!!!

Final thoughts: *clears throat, wipes tears that are totally not there* Right. So it's obvious that I enjoy this one. It just screams Levi and suits him so well and it also just breaks my heart so...yeah.

Satan / Read My Heart:

The piano. THE 👏 FUCKING 👏 PIANO 👏 So beautiful! The fact that his song is so soft and slow when he himself is meant to represent something so strong and violent is simply poetic. There are moments where I love Satan's singing voice in this and there are moments where I don't like it as much. HIS VOICE IN THE CHORUS IS MY FAVOURITE 😭 So sweet. So just- I love him. I love him so much.

Lyrics: So honest, but I feel that this is almost like a letter from Satan of all the things he wishes he could say. Also, remember that dork who can't say love words out loud headcanon we talked about earlier today? He literally confirms here 🥰🥰 Aww Satan

Chorus: AGAIN! SO HONEST WITH HIS FEELINGS AND HIM TRYING TO KNOW HIMSELF 😭😭😭 It's just so beautiful Stunning. I love it. This one hits all the markers for me. I'm calling it now. I think his lyrics are my favourite, and possibly my favourite song in general. It's just such a beautiful love song. Filled with what he so desperately desires but also his fears and it's so honest it hurts.

Final thoughts: This one made me cry. Like, literally made me cry. It was just so beautiful and perfect. I mean, there's a sad line that uses cats as a metaphor 😭 It's fantastic. Amazing. I can't praise it enough. Where I feel everyone else so far (except poor Levi, poor baby) had something that implied...suggestive things, Satan is just so desperate for love. To feel and experience it and everything that comes with it, and it's just- I love it.

Asmodeus / Pomade:

I actually really really enjoy the music here. It's more pop than EDM and I appreciate that. It's nice. Asmo's voice is also really pleasant to listen to. There's just something about it. I like it a lot. When he holds his notes, it just has this amazing sound and I dunno. I just like it a lot! AND HIS FALSETTO!! HOLY SHIT! AMAZING

Lyrics: I mean... It's exactly what I'd expect from Asmo. It doesn't feel like it's being sung to the MC though. At least not at first. It almost feels like he's singing to an audience at the Fall or something.

Chorus: It's a little more personal, but I feel like we're still only getting that one side of Asmo. We're shown in the second season that he does have insecurities and that there's more to him than being self-obsessed, and I'm kind of disappointed that the song doesn't show that.

Second Verse: We're finally getting personal here. Okay. The table has been turned and now Asmo is finally talking about how he feels about MC and that's more I like it!

Final thoughts: Now that I've listened to the final verse and chorus, I GET IT NOW! It's a story. It's how Asmo first felt like all that was there for him and all he was made for was pleasing the audience. Then you came and it was just a game of trying to make you fall for him, just like he had been able to everyone else. And finally, him realizing that it's him who has become captivated by you and that he loves you! It's actually really sweet and I love that. Sound-wise, this song is fantastic! The music really compliments his voice and it all suits Asmo's character really well.

Beelzebub / Hungry Six-Pack:

So ya'll already know I adore Beel and this ROCK MUSIC AND HIS VOICE MADE ME SWOON! His voice! His voice is FANTASTIC! And the music IS AMAZING!!! I just love the guitar in it. It's (pardon me for this) it's just so damn sexy and I love it so much! THE BRIDGE OF THE SONG IS DAMN HOT OKAY?! I CAN'T GET OVER IT!

Lyrics: What I love about the lyrics is that they confirm my theory of Beel actually being physically impacted by his appetite. He says that it can cause him to get dizzy and I'm just here like 🥺🥺 We really get a sense here of how Beel is actually desperate to stop this appetite. He hates how it impacts him. He hates how it impacts those around him. And I just - 😭😭😭

Chorus: It fucking slaps! The up tempo is just *chefs kiss* and I love everything about it. And the words 😳 Damn Beel...Damn. i love him so much even though if you really think about it these words HURT

Final thoughts: As you can clearly see, I love this one. Now, lyrics-wise, I found a comment that really broke down the lyrics in terms of Beel's insecurity with his appetite and his sin and how he struggles with that and it made me appreciate the song all that much more and I just- I love this song. (The comment was left by Felix The Lemon on this if you don't understand the utter heartbreak of this song, please read this) Maybe it's my bias towards Beel. Maybe it's because it's rock. But this one, overall, is my favourite.

Belphegor / Dreamscape:

I love the almost lo-fi sound to it! It's perfect cause a lot of people use lo-fi to sleep. Very clever producers. Very clever. I both hate and love his voice at the same time and I DON'T KNOW WHY! Like it has a bit of a filtered sound to it, but what genuine sound I can hear through that filter is really really nice and I love it. I TAKE IT ALL BACK HIS VOICE IN THE CHORUS 😭😭😭 HE HAS MY FAVOURITE VOICE OF THE BROTHERS BY FAR! OH MY GOD IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL!

Lyrics: GAAAAAHHHHH!!!! I LOVE THEM SO MUCH! OKAY OKAY OKAY!!! So! These lyrics are so great because it's showing that soft side of Belphie that I adore! It's not his teasing side, it's the side that only Beel and MC really get to see and I just- I love it.

The whole "I will always wait for you" for some reason made me think of when he was stuck in the attic where literally the only thing he had to look forward to was MC coming to set him free and update him on how Beel was doing. And then afterward, he had to wait for them to be comfortable around him again because he knew that he messed up and he had to wait for their forgiveness. And then finally, Belphie has to wait for them to notice his feelings, amongst the obvious more showy feelings of his brothers and to hopefully maybe choose him 😭😭😭 SO GOOD

Second verse is his insecurities and I just ao;dusg;bfjnaduoh;szvbjxaui;dvkjx AAAAAAHHHHHHH I LOVE IT SO MUCH I CAN'T EVEN PUT IN TO WORDS!! WHY DO I LOVE THIS?!?!

The Omniman Problem

Or, rather that's the topical name for this I don't know if this has a name. So, Omniman, Nolan Grayson, elite viltrumite, he's extremely strong and has literal thousands of years of fighting experience. So why is he a brawler? Sure maybe its part of him being a Flying Brick but its a pet peeve of mine that when creators try to sell me on a person that has had the chance to refine fighting down to the most destructive and efficient form its sometimes something incredibly boring. And don't get me wrong, from a realism perspective MMA and other combined martial arts are less flashy than traditional martial arts but MMA is more often than not interesting to watch even if its not built for being entertaining, but in fiction... I dunno if you tell me someone has been fighting and training for multiple lifetimes it summons to the mind some eldritch, alien martial form that makes it incomprehensible how I was hit and why it damaged me so much. Like, they poked me with their nose, why am I in a crater on the ground coughing up blood? Portraying a fighter like that should be an added layer to its character. I am aware that Invincible, and other shows, for example is not about combat and techniques like some other shows, and maybe its less about whether or not there are limits as to how much you can do, combat wise, with a humanoid body. But it still bothers me.

Sorry steph, this is a ranty ask, I just need to get this off my chest. It upsets me a bit when I read fics and they say "They were like teenagers" in regards to intimate acts. It makes me feel inadequate, because I've never done anything with anyone, and I'm no longer a teenager, so I never had a stage where I could "act like a teen" with anyone. It makes me feel like I won't get that time to have that, that I'll be expected to know everything and be confident and experienced now that I'm older. Why do characters in fics they have to be equated to teens when they become over enthusiastic, and not just two people who are really into each other and experiencing something new? I don't know if I explained myself well here, and if this is a weird ask you don't have to answer it. Just needed to vent a bit.

First off, I just want you to know that there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG with "not knowing stuff when I'm older". You want to know who else doesn't?

Nonny, "acting like a teenager" to me, is hanging out with friends, going to movies, getting your first crush, learning about yourself, and going to school. It's society that pushes this – quite weirdly obsessive – idea that you should have fucked like rabbits in your teens and know everything when you're 20.

Anyway. In my case, Nonny, that sort of thing just... never came to mind, and it exhausted me hearing about all of my friends' latest relationships, when all I wanted to do is hang up the phone and play Sonic 2, LOL. And because that was my attitude, I was "a weird kid" and promptly bullied all the time. It wasn't until my early 30's I realized why I just had no interest in any of that (discovered my sexuality), and really, I did a lot of my own research and talked to others my age to learn what I didn't know. There's no "wrong age" for being inexperienced. Don't doubt your own worth, Nonny. Sometimes, some of us choose to just... not do that kind of thing, and it's okay. Some of us are confused by our bodies, by our preferences, and we in turn may internalize that.

There's nothing wrong with you Nonny. You'd be surprised how many "inexperienced" people there really are.

That all said, however, I think people "equate it to being teenagers in fics" because teens are curious, have lots of energy, and – no insult meant – more willing to try new or dangerous things. When you get to be my age.... well, I'm too exhausted most days to get up to get food, let alone have any energy to eff something. That's simply all they mean by it, Nonny. It's never meant to make people feel "left out" and it is a common phrasing in North American English (that and "going at it like rabbits"). It is also admittedly a small pet peeve of mine, namely because I am a romantic at heart and feel like a good relationship should also be based on being each other’s best friend, but I dunno. 

I’m literally the worst person to ask this question. Never had a serious relationship in my entire life. And like you, my shit self esteem makes me believe that because of that, I am undesirable. But I try not to let it get me down, and neither should it you! <3 You’re okay, Nonny <3

On Supergirl

Figured I should put up my thoughts about Kara in the wake of her first film appearance being announced, and the final season of her TV show fast approaching. Short version is: Kara is very cool and DC needs to stop messing with her. 

My Introduction to Kara

I was introduced to Kara the way most millennials/Gen Zers were I imagine, via the Loeb Superman/Batman arc which brought the traditional Kara Zor-El Supergirl take into Post-Crisis continuity, after years of DC attempting to have a “Supergirl” without violating the editorial mandate that Kal needed to be the literal “Last Son of Krypton” (an example of one of the dumb ways DC fucked Kara over). Story goes that one day Dan Didio was in line at the Superman ride at Six Flags (I love that ride even though it’s stolen my glasses every time I’ve ridden it, even when I left them in a locker!). The ride had signs that talked about various Superman characters. Didio was reading the entry for Supergirl where it talked about her not being Clark’s cousin but instead some weird merge of alien shapeshifter, angel, and human girl, and he realized how fucking stupid that was, and he went back to the office and told Loeb to bring Kara back. 

Years later I would also be standing in line at the Six Flags Superman ride (probably at a different park location but who knows?) as a youngster and would read the new Supergirl sign that trumpeted that Superman had a cousin who shared all his powers, an update reflecting the new Loeb origin. I thought she sounded pretty cool, made a note to see if my library had any Supergirl stories next time I visited, then got on the Superman ride and promptly lost my glasses like an idiot because I wanted to take them off while I was riding and pretend I was changing from my “disguise” into Superman mid flight. My dad grounded me for this afterwards, but it gave me a funny story to tell at family get togethers and isn’t that what Six Flags is all about?

A month later (and with spiffy new glasses), my mom dropped me off at a new library next to where she worked, and they had one of the best Superman collections I’ve ever seen to this day. I was in heaven and while reading every Superman book I could find (I couldn’t check them out because I didn’t have a card, my mom’s card didn’t cover the area the library was in, and my mom wouldn’t have checked them out anyway since comics were “too violent”), I found the trade collecting Kara’s new origin. I read it and I thought both she and Superman were really cool, and Batman was a  punk who had to beat Darkseid by cheating, the loser. Turner’s art to my young eyes was the best I had ever seen, and the panels got engraved into my brain. 

I still get downright nostalgic whenever I see Turner Superman or Supergirl stuff. I also got my parents to rent the animated movie adaption of the Superman/Batman arc from Blockbuster (remember those?), and that sealed the deal. Seeing Kara hold her own against Darkseid convinced me she was as cool as her cousin. Next time my mom dropped me off at the library next to her workplace, I went looking for Supergirl stuff to read. I found the first volume of her new volume by Joe Kelly taking place after the Loeb arc and dove in.

It was... weird. 5 years later I might have enjoyed it but at the time I was majorly put off. Kara took a secret identity for a day and then ditched it because it was “stupid” and the kids bullied her. She was always getting into fights with Kal, and there was this weird plot that I couldn’t follow about how her dad had sent her to kill Kal, maybe or maybe not? Also she could grow crystals which I thought was dumb, and said she was stronger than her cousin which I couldn’t buy for a second given he looked like he was carved out of marble, and she looked like she relied on sunlight instead of food. I put the volume back on the shelf and kinda gave up on reading the character after that for a while. 

I followed her via the DC wiki updates just like I did Superman, and everything I read seemed dumb and convoluted. She was split in two, moped around a lot, made out with an alternate version of her cousin, and basically just flopped about the same way the rest of the Superfamily did during the 00s. Nothing made me think I had made a mistake dropping Kara until I read the latest update to her wiki page.

I was super into what I was reading about the Busiek/Johns era of Superman online. Lex was back and making a big revenge scheme that involved all the other Rogues! Old Superman Rogues were getting revamped and made cool again! Johns reintroduced Brainiac and made him a big threat, with Kal and Kara teaming up to fight him! Busiek was revamping Prankster and telling big ambitious Superman stories! For the first time in a long while, the consensus on the Internet was that Superman was good again. My “home” library had zero Marvel books and no Superman or Batman books, all their DC stuff was Flash or Green Lantern, mainly written by Johns. Insane to think back on now. My hopes that because Johns was involved with Superman, Superman books would show up at my library were fulfilled. They started bringing in Busiek and Johns collections, and someone there also ordered Sterling Gates’ first volume of Supergirl, and I checked everything out since I was old enough to have my own library card, and my parents were worried more about the violent video games I was playing rather than comics.

I read everything and loved it. I also really liked Gates’ take on Kara. She was still an imperfect teenager but she wasn’t insufferably angsty or constantly fighting with Kal. She was going to give the secret identity another try and Lana had “adopted” her. It’s funny remembering how I enjoyed all that given my current thoughts on how Kara should work, but it was great at the time. I liked Gates introducing new foes for Kara, some classic Superman Rogues adapted for her like Bizzarogirl, others crafted specifically for her like Reactron. Gates’ basically rekindled my enjoyment of Kara the same way Busiek & Johns rekindled my enjoyment of Superman.

Of course it ended terribly like everything Superman-related seems to.

I’ve got a whole post I want to do about New Krypton and what came after. In short that is the most blatant example of “hitting the reset button” that I’ve ever seen. All the potential got wasted, and afterwards everything except Lex’s Action Comics stuff just didn’t appeal to me. Gates got booted off Kara for Nick Spencer who ended up leaving himself later, a promising Teen Titans line-up with Kara on it didn’t happen, and the last proper Pre-Flashpoint Superfamily story was a crappy team-up with Doomsday against Bigger Doomsday (thank God for Cornell’s final Luthor/Superman confrontation at least). When news of the reboot arrived, I was honestly happy. The Superline needed an enema.

Controversial opinion time: I liked New 52 Supergirl. It’s weird because a lot of the stuff I hated about Kelly’s run was here, and a lot of the stuff I loved about the Gates’ run was not. This was angry, moody, emotional Kara again, fighting with Kal and not fond of Earth. But I was in my teens at this point, and I didn’t want happy go-lucky Superman or Supergirl. I wanted my heroes angry, scared of the future, ready to go out there and smash some cars. Morrison’s Action Comics was 100% my jam (still is once I really understood the deeper meaning beneath the work) and this Kara felt like a natural fit for this universe. Plus we got Asrar on art and that guy made it damn pretty to look at, lots of cool science fiction stuff going on, even with the dumb H’el storyline.

I loved all the new Rogues Kara got. I loved her new Fortress under the ocean. I loved how traumatized she was by the loss of Krypton, that she wanted more than anything to go home, that her cousin was like a stranger to her since they had been apart for so long. I found all of that incredibly relatable. A lot of the New 52 Supergirl stories might have been schlock but it was my type of schlock damnit, and I enjoyed it!

I kept with her New 52 series all the way through the Red Daughter Saga (which I loved). As someone who grew up on Johns GL (since that was the only comics my home library had), seeing a Supercharacter join a Lantern Corp was the hypest thing ever. I loved the finale about Kara finally letting go of her anger and losing the ring while smashing her foe into the sun, it was incredibly cathartic for me as an angry teen myself. I finally stopped following her series sometime after since I was no longer enjoying the Superline or really DC as a whole. It wasn’t until I heard that New 52 Superman died and the “old” Superman was back, that I checked back into DC.

DC Rebirth & How I Think Kara Should Work

I did not enjoy Supergirl Rebirth, and I think I’ll talk about my problems with it alongside how I think Kara as a character should work since the two are related. A pet peeve of mine that has formed over the years is this: I don’t like it when Superfamily members get turned into Clark clones. Kon wearing glasses and going to Smallville High. Kara going to high school and being involved in journalism. Jon more or less being written as a copy of his dad personality-wise. I hate that kind of stuff because it’s boring. What’s the point of a Superfamily if everyone is just copying Clark? It also doesn’t fit the characters especially in Kara’s case. Why the hell does she want to be a journalist? Were there journalists on Krypton? I don’t remember ever seeing one! Shouldn’t she want to be, I dunno, a scientist? That seems to have been the El family tradition, wouldn’t she have been groomed for that?

This one-off by Shea is honestly the only acceptable outcome for Kara going into journalism for me. She realizes she’s just copying her cousin and switches to something she wants to do. So Orlando copying the show, which already basically turned Kara into an expy of her cousin, just did not appeal to me at all. What had worked for me under Gates way back when was not clicking for me this time. I wanted to see Kara embody the principles of the S-shield in a different way than her cousin did. So I really enjoyed when Rebirth ended and we moved into the Bendis era with Andrekyo relaunching the title as Kara in space.

Kara in space has always felt like a good fit for me. Unlike Kal I’ve come to believe that Kara really shouldn’t be all that fond of Earth. For him it’s home, but for her it’s just where she ended up after her real home got destroyed. I think Kara works well as a sort of nomad, occasionally making stops back home to Earth to check on her cousin, but otherwise? She’s more comfortable out in space than she could ever be on Earth. Out in space she can be Kryptonian (which is what she should think of herself as in contrast to Clark being torn between his Kryptonian biology and human upbringing, and Jon/Kon identifying as human), be her true self, not have to pretend to be human to fit in. Kara founding a moon refuge was one of the best ideas for her that I’ve seen, I would love if DC made her Future State refugee center on the moon canon. I’m excited for more Kara adventures in space with the upcoming Tom King story.

Also love that her and Krypto are getting tied together, if they don’t want to use Krypto in Superman’s stuff, let her have him! Bring on cosmic adventurer Supergirl!

Personality & Other Traits

Kara to me should be more hot-tempered than her cousin. All the Superfamily members should have a temper in my opinion, I see that as the “Deadly Sin” of Superman and his family. But while Kal is like a simmering pot that will explode if it’s left cooking for too long, Kara is like dynamite. Light her fuse at your own peril because she will go off on you.

I also like the idea of Kara being rash. Kal’s got a maturity that came from over a decade of having to live with Lex Luthor constantly getting away with all his evil schemes. He’s patient because he’s been forced to be. Kara? If you ask for her help she’ll give it, but beware because she doesn’t really care about the long term impacts of her decisions. She’s an invulnerable teenager after all.

Really liked that Venditti Annual where Kara got tutored in history by a reincarnation of Hawkman. Kara having a passion for history is a neat trait, would be nice to see her teach Kal or Jon some Kryptonian lore, or have her lead a Kryptonian holiday celebration for the Superfamily because she’s the only one who remembers how to do it. 

Sexuality wise I know a lot of people ship Kara and Lena on account of the chemistry between the two in the show. I haven’t watched the show myself but I’m fine with making Kara bisexual, the Superfamily could use some LGBT+ rep, and Lena hasn’t done anything of worth as a villain, so undo that and throw the two together. If we’re letting Harley and Ivy get away with murder I think we can let Lena off the hook too, undo the Ultrawoman weirdness and put the two together. Could be fun seeing the two building that moon refuge together.

All in all I think Kara is a great character who is a stronger embodiment of the immigrant experience than even her cousin in some ways. I hope King does a good job with her, she’s treated better than her cousin on the film side, and that overall the 20s are a better decade for Supergirl than the 10s were.

I don't really write tragedies. To me that's not satisfying and too depressing to bother with. I do write angst but always with a happy or satisfying conclusion.

It depends on how you define that. Some people think any fic that ends with TenII/Rose is not a happy ending. I tend to write all my couples getting a happy ending so I don't think one is happier than another.

Yes. Hmmm. The craziest was probably when I wrote Steve Irwin in my Peter Vincent/Hades and Rose/Persephone fic.

Tons. Some in great detail with comparisons to make sure they are clear on what a crap writer I am. Or I'm disgusting whatever. My fic on AO3 is moderated now so I can delete that stuff which is almost never con crit. It's bashing. Luckily, it's been a while since I received anything really hateful. Probably because of the moderation.

Sorry if you've already gone into detail about it in another post but for theoretical therianthropes other than wolves, why does were(animal) not work if "were" just means "man"? Wouldn't they also be animal-men in the same vein as wolfmen? Assuming that they follow the same rules werewolves do, wouldn't they follow the same naming pattern? If they don't, what would they be called? (I'd assume other cultural therianthropes like African werehyenas or South Asian weretigers would use the names from the country of origin but what about portrayals of other animals?) I have discussed it some here and there, like when I talk about etymology.

What you are referring to is probably my dig at “werewoman” in my last answer. That isn’t the same as something like “weretiger.” Because if you say “weres” to refer to werewolves, or “werewomen” to refer to werewolf women, you are effectively removing any sense of shapeshifting or animal of any kind. “Were” means “man” so... man-women? Human-women. They are people women. So they are... ordinary women! That doesn’t work at all.

But yes, etymologically, the whole werecreature thing does work, of course. It’d work fine, since it just means man-animal. Theoretically, anyway. If you want to get very pedantic you could complain that there is butchering still, but I won’t even get into all that because my head currently hurts and I would sound like a crazy person if I dug that deep.

Long story short, the “werecreatures” thing is a pet peeve of mine. There are many far more interesting, diverse terms that one can use instead of just butchering “werewolf.” But people do it because it’s simpler, easier, and also because these creatures in popular culture are literally exactly like the way werewolves function in pop culture except they turn into a different animal, like a tiger.

My opinion...

What people should be doing is looking up the actual terms for these creatures in their native languages (like “kitsune” instead of “werefox” and “bultungin” instead of “werehyena,” etc.), in the languages of the people who believed in and originated the myths, and then portray those creatures as they were portrayed in their own myths - and use the names they had in their own myths. Not just re-use werewolf concepts and the werewolf name. It’d be more interesting and more respectful to literally everything.

And as for any other ones? I dunno, it could vary. I just think it’d be more fun if people came up with unique terms instead of just making a bunch of werewolf copies that turn into different animals. It feels very cheesy to me (and cheapens werewolves, to boot).
