a criticism I see of sao is often along the lines of “what’s the message? that video games are better than real life? that being trapped in the game was Good, Actually? that doesn’t apply to real life at all. that’s a useless thought experiment akin to contemplating the ethics of fucking your clone.”
the way the aincrad arc was about how you have to find love and happiness in the here & now, no matter how bleak things are. because when fighting for a cause, it’s so easy to deny yourself joy until that far-off dream is achieved; you tell yourself you’ll rest after you’ve saved enough money for early retirement. or when capitalism is over and homelessness eradicated. or when you’ve finally reached peak physical form. or when the war is over.
but so many people die before that happens. or they live to see it but shortly succumb to trauma or just the ravages of time. all those years spent fighting for your cause, but now you’ve won you’re an adult and you never had a chance to have any semblance of a childhood. or now you’ve grown so accustomed to misery, you don’t know how to treat happiness- so accustomed to pressure and hatred, you’re cruel and harsh to the people around you.
in sao, life went on, in its strange way. people went fishing. they got married. they cooked and ate for pleasure. they did quests and events for fun. people sarcastically say “they’re trapped in a death game and all they can think about is buying a cottage and fucking?” as if there wasn’t a very direct reasoning for this in the plot. them experiencing a sort of burnout, as well as distrust in the system as it was. them realising their own mortality, that they could be killed any day now; that it’s better to die in love than to die miserable.

cannot stop thinking about that meta that’s like “voldemort’s ultimate goal was to simply destroy the british wizarding world” because it makes so much sense. tom riddle was a poor, orphaned, assumed muggleborn boy with a (most likely) ‘commoner’ accent and a distaste for humanity who sorted into slytherin, the hogwarts house infamous for being filled with loud rich bigots. tom riddle, with his background, could not have possibly been very popular those first few years of his schooling. tom riddle would’ve loathed the lot of them, all those arrogant, spoiled rich kids boasting about their family line. finding out he was the heir of slytherin would have been both a relief (he has something to fit in) and a jackpot (if they knew, they’d bow before him). and he uses that heritage later, when ‘tom riddle’ has disappeared and a stranger called ‘voldemort’ appears in his place. the fanatics literally kiss his feet.
voldemort is canonically a genius. he would’ve known that non-magical blood doesn’t make you dirty or less talented, because he himself is the prime example of that. espousing the bigoted pureblood agenda was simply the easiest way to gain power over the ones in power—all to send society crumbling to the ground from the inside. he takes over the ministry and ruins it, taking the first steps in tearing down the establishment; he kills regardless of blood, implying he doesn’t give one flying fuck what your heritage is; he tries to destroy the sorting hat, which would render the concept of ‘houses’ void.
personally i think it’s very interesting and appealing to put this interpretation in the context of tomarry/harrymort. i’ve always HC’d that harry will grow tired when he’s older, after he’s saved the wizarding world once (at the expense of his own happiness and well-being) and sees that nothing has changed or will change. that voldemort was a symptom, not the disease. that he and hermione and ron keep struggling, working themselves to the bone to make their world more fair and to suppress and eradicate the rampant underlying bigotry, but that it just won’t take.
and with an older harry, an embittered one, turned caustic and cynical by the very world he once viewed as his sanctuary—i don’t really think their beliefs would differ all that much. they’ve both seen and experienced the injustices. they’re both annoyed and disenchanted. harry will always have a regard for life, and voldemort won’t ever, but if anyone would have a wish to tear society down and build it back up again it’s them both.

it destroys me that the master went all ballistic after he learnt about the timeless child partly bc it meant that him and the doctor weren’t truly equals anymore but the doctor would never think of herself as more than the master bc of it and only threw the “it makes me more” in his face bc he was being an asshole about it

Hey do you ever think about Orym being a self proclaimed romantic who is “super lonely all the time, especially at night” and how guilty he feels about wanting romantic connection because he still loves his husband, and sees Will’s face every night before going to bed, but he’s starting to realize his deeper attraction to Ashton as something real and realize his pining for Dorian as something he shouldn’t ignore, but he was supposed to be with Will and he’s come to terms with Will dying, but sometimes it hurts so much, and yes he wants romantic connection and he’s so lonely, but he still hasn’t gotten revenge for Will’s death, and he may die soon so why pursue anything if he’s gonna be with Will again in the afterlife, BUT he may die soon and why hold off on admitting how he feels when he knows that despite losing Will the time they had was real good and he wouldn’t trade it for anything, and what if he doesn’t die what if it all turns out okay and maybe he now really has a reason to want and hope for not just *the* future, but HIS future because that future could include Dorian or Ashton and is it bad to not want to be with Will sooner or is it better to want to live and be with someone who cares for him because thats what Will would want and he wants romantic connection and he is so lonely all the time, especially at night, and what if I started chewing the drywall huh?

I’m reflecting on cesaire’s work again and one of the little flourishes he does in discourse on colonialism is that he says the west will have to answer for its crimes against the human community. and I especially love this line because he’s using the same bourgeois universalising language that the imperial core so often does (“human rights” “freedom and justice for all” “spreading democracy across the globe”) but as a cudgel against the west, to reframe the human community as all those who lay outside of it. anyway I think everyone should read discourse on colonialism

I will probably write about this in more detail later. but while im on the subject of “pre-hiatus/early fob is better than post-hiatus fob” brain rot:
if you look at photos and gifs and videos of soul punk era patrick and think that was the happiest or healthiest that he has ever been. i want you to look in the mirror really closely and examine why. think about it really hard for me ok.

ok so i tried to comment on a post on r/adhd talking about some bullshit a psychiatrist told me about how she wouldn’t diagnose me with autism bc i had a fairly large group of friends and autistic people can’t have that many friends (yeah, what the fuck), despite the fact that basically that entire group was neurodivergent (and queer) and at least one person in it would eventually BE OFFICIALLY DIAGNOSED WITH AUTISM.
then i get this message
Tumblr media
imo this is wack. firstly, neurodivergent IS just a descriptor. full stop. and i don’t want to say “people with mental health disorders” or any bullshit like that. (especially since adhd & autism are neurodevelopmental disorders, not mental illnesses) it’s clunky and awkward and in my experience NOT HOW PEOPLE TALK. neurodivergent is an incredibly widespread term! there’s nothing wrong with it!
then i checked out the links, and here’s some of their “position on neurodiversity” post
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is all bullshit? like i also disagree with framing neurodiversity as purely neutral differences in cognition—yes certain things would be much less disabling if society was more accommodating, but even in a perfect world things like adhd and autism would still be distressing/disabling for a large number of people. they’re using the beliefs of specific groups that also happen to use terms like neurodivergent (because it’s a descriptor and a lot of people use it!!!) to label everyone who uses those words as part of a specific “neurodiversity movement” and i don’t like that??
anyway i’d like to hear some other people’s opinions on this

Dinner at the crap shack with post original series! Lorelai, Luke, Sookie, Jackson and Jess who’s visiting (bonus points if Rory happens to be around too), and at some point early in the table conversation Lorelai and Jess make the exact same joke at the exact same time and freeze in horror.
And they try to play it cool, maybe one of them says «jinx you owe me a Coke» but then it happens again, and then again, and it keeps happening why do they have the same banter?? It’s scaring the hell out of them both (and giving the rest of the table some hilarious newfound clarity)
