Very early on in the nieyao brainrot i was like "why is murder sexy to me now. I blame jinkei." And i meant that in a kind of jokey manner because jinkei doesn't really have all THAT much in common with nieyao aside from, like, betrayal, divorce, murder and class elements.

However. Once you look a bit closer at 3zun and dabihawkstwice you realize that they all have a disturbing amount of things in common except the traits are differently distributed among the characters, resulting in very different dynamics.

So, what i mean is:

Murder: hawks > twice. Meng yao > mingjue. Xichen> meng yao. Mingjue > meng yao (?)

Spying: Meng yao. Hawks.

Being "too trusting" as a character flaw: Xichen. Twice.

Extreme devotion to father flips, after years of mistreatment, to extreme dedication to patricide: Meng Yao. Dabi.

Two characters are doylistically on one side of the "protagonist - antagonist" divide and one is on the other. The one on the other puts a lot of effort into making the other two believe they are on the same side. Only one of them believes this. (Meng yao: antagonist trying to convince nmj and lxc he's a protagonist, only lxc believes him. Hawks: hero trying to convince dabi & twice he is a villain. Only twice believes him)

Ironically, the character who does not believe them played a large part in bringing them into the fold in the first place: Nie mingjue promoting meng yao. Dabi recruiting hawks

Daddy issues: (bass boosted) ALL OF THESE MOTHERFUCKERS except possibly jin.

Character's crimes in large part motivated by alive & abusive father: Meng yao. Dabi

Character driven to crime by other options being locked out due to lower class background and discrimination: Meng Yao. Twice

Character is lifted out of impoverished conditions due to recognition for a heroic event, but this puts them in the claws of another person/organization that uses them for their own gain to do terrible things: Meng Yao. Hawks

(Bitch how does this little fucker have all 3 of their motivations???)

Characters who are so driven to a goal and so willing to die for it it borders on being straight up suicidal: Nie Mingjue. Dabi. (Hawks???)

Bonus: killed character mourned by younger sibling (figure) who swears revenge on their killer: Huaisang. Toga.

Character who killed other character was convinced "they had no other choice": Meng Yao. Hawks.

Mental health issue (connected to magic system) causes personality change: mingjue. Twice

Power is slowly killing you. You keep using it anyways: Mingjue. Dabi

Class differences causing one character to misunderstand what drives another character to do what they did, causing them to condemn their actions without providing a meaningful out: nieyao. Jinkei

"I can fix him" gone wrong: jinkei. Xiyao.

Cute lil teacher-student roleplay: jinkei. Xiyao

Younger foils succeed where they failed: xiyao - wangxian. Jinkei - 1A trio and their respective villains

Orphaned at an early age: Twice. Mingjue

Character not orphaned but mainly raised by someone else than parents: Hawks. Xichen

Character plans long-con revenge while keeping everything a secret from everyone in their social circle: Dabi.... well this isn't really anyone in 3zun- oh shit here comes huaisang with a steel chair!

Character trying to gather information vs that one motherfucker they can't figure out: meng yao with mingjue. Hawks with dabi.

Getting fucking stabbed: Meng yao. Twice.

Character witnesses (dad-related) crime and learns that society will do nothing about it because the perpetrator is powerful enough and so becomes deeply disgusted with those ignoring the problem and vows to enact justice very loudly and very visibly themselves: Nie Mingjue. Dabi. (The difference here is that mingjue is loud the entire time and Dabi spends 10 years quietly working up to his live TV debut which, as I said above, makes him a huaisang)

Trying to be the opposite of your father just puts you exactly where he ended up: Xichen. Dabi

Trying to be just like your father will fucking kill you: Mingjue. Dabi (yes dabi is both of these)

Character doesn't give a fuck that your betrayal might end up killing them (spoilers: it will) but stay the fuck away from the people close to them: Mingjue Twice.

Karma comes in the form of the ex you murdered back from the dead (except not really back) trying to kill you: Meng Yao. Hawks.

The ex in question: Mingjue. Twice.

One character is hiding something big from the other the entire time: meng yao with both his sworn brothers but primarily xichen. And both dabi and hawks with twice.

Mommy issues (you wanted to save your mom. You couldn't): Meng Yao. Hawks

Mommy issues (uhhh it's complicated ): Xichen. Dabi

If you HAD to assign each of them an equivalent my best attempt would be mingjue-dabi, xichen-twice, and meng yao- hawks but that clearly doesn't fit them all that well.

Dabitwice are nothing like nielan beyond, like, being friends and one of them dying. For one, Dabi is highkey a bitch (affectionate) in a way that nie mingjue just. Isn't. Even at his most anry and violent he isn't bitchy and Dabi IS. Secondly, nielan are defined by their standing in society and, as a consequence of that, their responsibility towards their people. They will always prioritise those in their care over their own wantsand expect the ofher to do the sameeven if it pulls them apart. Especially Nie "how dare you waste time trying to save my life lan xichen you are BUSY with your JOB." Mingjue. Meanwhile, dabitwice have both been spit out by hero society and no longer give a single fuck about what it's trying to tell them. They're opposites!

Nieyao as dabihawks makes a little more sense i suppose. These are two people who don't trust each other, but are still tied together (and, if you want to read into that, despite everything, kind of genuinely like each other. And kind of hate themselves for it) however. Nie mingjue is way too direct to be Dabi. Dabihawks are two people who don't trust each other, yes, but crucially one of them is trying to win the other's trust and the other is pretending that it's working while actually not buying their shit at all. This is a sangyao dynamic.

And trying to imagine the jinkei fight between xichen and jgy feels just straight up Wrong because the power dynamics are all upside down and jgy, for all that he can monologue very nicely, would never gloat about how easy it was to deceive xichen. He kind of does the exact opposite. Also the person who ends up being killed is uhhh very much the wrong one.

Rather, the jinkei fight starts out as nieyao divorce #2 fire palace edition except instead of meng yao being in spy mode hawks is taking the spy mask OFF. Then it becomes nieyao divorce #3 staircase edition, where they are both, somehow, nie mingjue and meng yao at the same time. We've got "some of my worst trauma is being repeated right now" for meng yao and twice. And "I have to win to protect other people from you" for hawks and nie mingjue... and also twice again, who is very willing to die here as long as he makes sure hawks doesn't hurt the rest of the league. And "I wanted to save you but you're attacking me so you leave me no choice... I have to kill you." For hawks and meng yao.

AND THEN dabi bursts through the wall like the kool-aid man and suddenly the entire jinkei fight leading up to this has actually been the xiyao temple divorce and dabi is fierce corpse nie mingjue ready to fuck your shit up. Except he is also, somehow, huaisang and actually this is all according to keikaku. Right up until the murder. Which, unlike huaisang, was not part of his plan.

The fact that I can describe these dynamics using the other characters as ingrdients, combining them to make a full meal, and they also just happen to be Ultimate Blorbos from their respective shows, is SO funny to me. like. Wow. I sure do have hyperspecific tastes huh. You put these things in a dynamic and i'll just eat it up everytime. What is wrong with me.

Submission: He's a sidekick and he's so sidelined that despite creating the universe he's treated as an afterthought - doubly a side character! But also? So relateable. He would absolutely have been on tumblr in his first life, he gets so excited about his blorbo who treats him terribly (until they finally get a happy ending in the extras - also! he has to wait for the extras to get his happy ending! very side-character of him). He holds the fascinating position of being mostly irrelevant to the story and yet without him the themes would totally fail. He deserves a win on something for once, okay?

Jiang Cheng from MDZS

Submission 1: Extremely traumatized yet also somehow the most normal and functional by the end. Huge bitch but I (and at least one of the other characters) think he deserves to be even worse after everything he's been through

Submission 2: Simultaneously badass and the most cringefail man. Extremely funny and stylish but still manages to be very uncool. Cries a lot. Also he's lost a lot of tumblr polls—let's give him another shot! We definitely love him more than his dad did!

Submission 3: He's got mommy issues AND daddy issues. He loves his sister and his shige so much. He's traumatised and incredibly competent. He rebuilt his whole sect! He's an asshole (affectionate). He's purple! He's got the coolest weapon ever conceived. I'm so worried about his blood pressure basically all the time.

Infinitely upset with the fact the mobile game has a different Jiang Cheng designs than any other adaptation. And I'm kinda in love with them for a few reasons... It's not really how I picture him in my head at all cause ive grown used to tight bun, sasuke bangs

but your telling me I could have had:

Bitchy High Ponytail Jiang Cheng a. I am a sucker for long hair (even if technically his og design is super long like everyone else, its just tied up tightly. tho points for it dramatically coming undone in the donghua) b. This man already swishes around dramatically enough with his whip and robes, imagine the added affect of a long ass ponytail. c. This gives him a visual parallel to Jin Ling's design which.... adorable. Copying his jiujiu.

Wears his Hair Exactly Like His Father Did Jiang Cheng a. Narratively fitting. Jiang Cheng trying to fit in to his role of sect leader before he was able to fully grow up into his own person. Emulating his father even in style, cause he never felt like he truly earned his approval as the heir to Yunmeng Jiang or as a leader which leads us to b. 🚨! Daddy Issues Alarm 🚨! (She's jealous of a dead woman that, honestly, I don't think Jiang Cheng's dad ever had a shot with.) Jiang Cheng inherits his father's position and his mom's sexy magic purple lightning whip and rebuilds the family home and raises his orphaned nephew with a whole lot more love and a whole lot less abuse than he got himself. He cries a lot."

- the kid (Wei Wuxian) is scared of dogs so Jiang Cheng’s dad forces Jiang Cheng to give his three dogs away

- Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng grow up, and Wei Wuxian ends up being better in almost everything. Jiang Cheng’s mom harshly scolds and criticizes Jiang Cheng for not measuring up and being as good

- Jiang Cheng’s dad behaves more affectionately and permissibly toward Wei Wuxian, doting on him to the extent that Jiang Cheng’s mom criticizes him for favoring him over his own son

- she tells Jiang Cheng that he will never be good enough for his dad because he reminds him of her; meanwhile, Wei Wuxian, the son of the woman he used to love, will always be above Jiang Cheng

- Wei Wuxian gets injured and trapped in a cave while Jiang Cheng runs home for a week straight, never stopping to rest while he tries to bring help. When Wei Wuxian is rescued, Jiang Cheng’s father praises Wei Wuxian for best exemplifying their clan’s motto. Jiang Cheng watches while receiving no praise for his own actions

Hello, anon! This got wildly out of hand, so it's all going under a cut.

Xicheng: Could Ship It

Borrowing this additional option I saw floating around!

I'm not strongly opposed to it, but it's hard for me to see them making it work in a canon universe. The fanart is very cute, though! And I've read some AUs that I thought made a good case, but they involved some thoughtful interventions.

What potential do you see in the ship?

Honestly, like, I just want them to both have something nice, they've had such a hard time. They both understand the hard work and sacrifices involved in sect leadership. I think the argument for it goes something like Jiang Cheng gets a person on his side who is kind to him, and Lan Xichen gets someone who's very reliable and also pretty direct, to heal his presumed post-canon trust issues.

What aspect makes you hesitant?

It just doesn't seem to me that they really enjoy each other? Like I believe they get along just fine and have a comfortable working relationship. I don't think they dislike each other, even. But they don't seem particularly close, even though they're of a rank and have been working with each other for years and years. I want my blorbo (Jiang Cheng) to be loved for his bad personality, not in spite of it!

I also think they would really struggle to communicate—Lan Xichen prefers to smooth things over, but Jiang Cheng reads too much reserve or politeness as rejection and, uh, gets reactive (thank you Jiang Fengmian for giving him the MOST deranged daddy issues, for real). Actually, I think Lan Xichen has a lot of potential to push a lot of Jiang Cheng's dad-related buttons just because of his temperament. (Maybe that's a plus? CRUNCHY.)

It also has the potential to cause some new and exciting political problems for them, which they both prefer to avoid.

Chengxian: Ship It

These two make me fuckin' insane!

What made you ship it?

Two things:

Their mutually happy childhood relationship, their initially compatible dysfunctions (Jiang Cheng is easily embarrassed but secretly wants affection, Wei Wuxian is bad at boundaries and WILL die if you don't pay attention to him -> Wei Wuxian touching Jiang Cheng all the time and receiving his attention, making both of them happy). Their enjoyment of each other. I love a badly-boundaried and devoted teenage relationship, it's delightful. Even before chengxian completely rotted my brain out, there was something specifically appealing about the Lan summer camp era.

The double golden core reveal took me out. I found Wei Wuxian's decision completely appalling to begin with, like viscerally disgusting. (I find it interesting when antis accuse Jiang Cheng of pretending to be upset when he finds out, or of not caring where the new core came from, because I, reader who did not get nonconsensual magic surgery, profoundly Did Not Like It. If it was my own body, I would freak out.) It's a fascinating combination of obsessive devotion and total denial of agency. Wei Wuxian is just like, "Don't worry, I will invent new and unheard of methods of violation for your own good because I can't cope with your despair." That's deranged, my dude. That is Not Normal. And then you find out that Jiang Cheng lost the core saving Wei Wuxian, and he plans to NEVER TELL HIM ABOUT IT. God damn it.

I don't even really care if they kiss, although it's fun when they do. Just reconcile! Reconcile!

What are your favourite things about the ship?

In no particular order:

In a text that is largely pro-Wei Wuxian—not in the sense that everything he does is moral, but in the sense that he's the cool protagonist, and he gets to kick ass and solve mysteries and have a happy ending—this relationship is one that highlights his weaknesses and failures in a very humanizing way. And in order to reconcile, he would actually really have to challenge himself and grow as a person, which I love for him. (I also think Jiang Cheng would have to struggle for it, but, like, dude has demonstrated the capacity to do hard and terrible things even when confronted with his own weaknesses. He's not gonna be cool about it, and he's going to cry and bitch the whole time, but if he thinks it needs to be done and it can be done, he'll do it.)

The lack of boundaries within the relationship, which is a product of the lack of clarity of the type of relation to each other. Are they friends? Are they martial brothers or real brothers? If Wei Wuxian is Jiang Cheng's shixiong, but Jiang Cheng is also Wei Wuxian's sect leader, which takes precedence? (It's clear what should take precedence, but Wei Wuxian just straight-up does not Respect His Authority, even though—by all available evidence—Jiang Cheng is a really good leader. But that lack of respect is also a form of intimacy.) It's super, super messy.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

By lying to him so extensively, and then by failing to show up for any of his commitments without any explanation, Wei Wuxian really did betray Jiang Cheng a whole bunch of times, and Jiang Cheng's resulting betrayal trauma really is his fault.

You break it, you bought it, coward! Stop running away! (For legal purposes, this is a joke.)
