I think one of the saddest, underrated moments in Six of Crows is when they escape the Ice Court and arrive in the harbour only to see the soldiers waiting for them, and there’s a moment before Nina bails them out where they all just sort of… accept it. They decide, almost unanimously with Nina being the only exception, that it’s okay to die now. That they tried, and they failed, but it’s okay because now it’s over. It’s almost like death is an excuse not to dwell on failing, because they won’t be able to. And yes, they decide to go out fighting, to go out strong, but in the end those are just words. They’re facing down a parem-drugged heartrender. They know that they have seconds left to live, maybe minutes if they’re lucky, and that all the fighting in the world couldn’t change that. They looked at each other and they thought “it’s over now, but that’s ok. We gave it our best shot”. The oldest person in this group is 18. Even Kuwei, the youngest at 15, is ready and he is probably facing a worse prospect than death by this point. And they decided they were ready. This singular moment is such a strong testament to their pain, to the unending grief that the world has put them through. They decided they were ready, and even in saving them all Nina thought she was killing herself. She was admitting to being ready too.

Kuwei was hope. And he was a boy who deserved to live without a target on his back.

While he never made an appearance in the show (thanks netflix for missing out on the most iconic ice court heist), Kuwei Yul-Bo is such a big part of the crew that I just had to draw him for the collection!✍️ A lot of the story revolves and unfolds around him, and idc what anyone says, I found him very fun✨️

Based the image off a few fan castings I saw of him, and a bit of how I'd imagine him to look like ^-^

If you seriously tell people they can’t headcanon a character as trans, queer, ace, or anything along those lines, I’m going to need you to shut the fuck up and learn to let people deal with their suffering and lack of representation.

“But the character lore-“

“But the author said-“

“But I headcanon-“

I don’t care.

These headcanons exist because if those characters can be those labels and still look like that, still find happiness, then maybes there hope for the rest of us.

If Wylan van Eck can look that much like a boy and be trans, then maybe there’s hope for those of us so desperate to be seen as a boy.

If Kanej can still flourish and exist while still being ace, then maybe there’s hope for those of us who desire the same respect and type of love.

If Kuwesper can exist and be seen and work out their relationship dynamic, then maybe there’s hope for those of us who are poly and wish to just be seen as valid for a single fucking day.

Let people have their headcanons even if they differ from canon (that’s what a fucking headcanons is, dumbasses) or from your own perspective on the characters, because you may have no clue how much that headcanon may mean for somebody.

Anyone else lie in bed at night and think about how the entire plan to get Kuwei out of Ketterdam safely hinged on that medic not bothering to take proper care of him? The man does nothing more than a single, feeble attempt to find Kuwei’s pulse; if he’d pulled back his shirt to apply pressure to the wound or complete any form of resuscitation, then he would’ve discovered the lack of gunshot. If he’d been attentive and caring, he would’ve tried to help the pregnant woman as well and discovered that it was Nina faking being in labour. But there’s no way that they could have known who the medic at the auction was going to be in advance, or at least if they did they didn’t tell the reader they were doing it, so they weren’t working with the known fact that this one guy was out for himself. They were working with the understanding that whoever ended up there, the outcome would be the same. Ketterdam is messed up enough that Kaz could reliably trust for a doctor to not care about anyone but himself, and be willing to allow Kuwei to die. I obviously realise that Kuwei was meant to appear dead at the time, but I refuse to believe that most doctors would see he wasn’t breathing and make no attempt to save him. To watch him get shot and not even apply pressure to the wound. Kaz knew that the medic wouldn’t care, Kaz relied on the medic not caring, but he still went through with that plan. He played the odds. The medic wasn’t going to care, and Kaz knew it. Because no one in Ketterdam ever cares.

Kuwei is a character often mischaracterized by the fandom, having been boiled down to just being “Wesper home wrecker” and the hurdle for Wesper to get over. People hate Kuwei because that’s all they seem him as, a tool to give Wesper issues. This shows a lack of understanding for his character as a whole and shows that people will not take the time to understand certain characters.

To begin, his whole life had been spent on the run and hiding. Running from the government due to being Grisha, running from Fjerda, being captured by Fjerdan, trapped in Fjerda, being captured by the Crows, running with the Crows, hiding the whole run of Crooked Kingdom, running from death itself, running away to Ravka, and now hiding out in Ravka. He lives in a constant state of holding onto what little self-preservation he must have left just to keep fleeing at a moments notice, never to turn back and face what chases him because everyone tells him to run and hide.

Why?

Because he’s just a prop to everyone. To Fjerda, to the story, to Ravka, and even to the Crows. He’s just a prop— a bargaining chip— a job. He’s hardly treated as human by anyone in the books, and is constantly spoken about as if he’s an item to be exchanged. Even the fandom speaks of Kuwei like this sometimes, or maybe they hardly take a moment to remember him at all.

Not to mention how much trauma he must have gone through? We don’t know what happened with his mother but we know Fjerda killed his father— Likely in front of Kuwei. Then they tortured him and tried to force him to recreate a drug that Kuwei didn’t even know how to make in the first place. Then he’s saved by kids his age only to discover their plan was just to trade him off to somebody else originally because to them… he’s just a prospect for money. And who knows what would have happened then? Would the Kerch government have gone to torture him too? Force him to do what the Fjerdans were doing? Maybe sell him off once more? What if it was back to Fjerda? Then he was put under constant fire and attacks, always in danger, tucked away somewhere without light and warmth for so long.

If he wasn’t friends with death before, he definitely was now.

Furthering on that, he had to watch as every single country became so after him, that the only solution was to fake his own death in front of them all— like a rabbit in front of wolves. Something which if done wrong, could literally end in his death (though maybe at this point, he was okay with that. It’s not like he’s really been living that whole time anyways). Or the plan could go wrong and somebody could make a grab at him. What if the Crows betray him and instead let him be sold off? What if they all fail? So they have a mock auction— which was real to everyone but Kuwei and the Crows— so Kuwei got to see just how much countries were willing to fight over him. Even if he knew the outcome of this auction, it would not be any less terrifying to hear as the price of yourself be called out. To hear you be auctioned off. To listen as you were reduced to nothing but money.

Then he was back on the run to Ravka, finally able to see the sun, finally able to relax. Right? But after all that, could he ever really relax? Could he ever exist as if any of this was normal? He’s still technically hiding in Ravka, without the freedom to go anywhere else. If he did, he would be killed, sold, used, tortured. And after all that… he’s still just a background character for all these stories. An item. A prop.

Yet he’s meant to represent a Phoenix— of rebirth and fire, to live even when all says he should be dead. To show that Grisha do not need to slouch in captivity or be used, to show that there is hope to fight back. He is meant to represent the fire in Grisha’s’ hearts, to build a better world and to use all of this attention he’s gained to help free the Grisha.

And yet he’s still on the run.

And yet he’s still traumatized.

And yet the fandom and characters still treat him like a prop.

Kuwei is more than just Wesper, Kuwei is more than just a prop, Kuwei is more than everything he’s been reduced to.

Just like Kaz, she wants to see her friend happy.

They seem super cute.

She loves when Wylan brings out that jealous side, however she doesn't think he'll make his threats real (Kuwei, you don't end up in the water... at the moment).

Wylan: Pekka Rollins x Jan Van Eck (Pejan)

He would be the maker.

It is one of his many revenges that he has planned for his father.

He loved seeing his face when all of Ketterdam was plastered with a drawing of the two of them kissing.

Revenge is served on a cold plate.

Jesper: Pekka Rollins x Jan Van Eck (Pejan)

Revenge is better if it is done twice.

He would help spreading rumors in Ketterdam about how their business meetings are just excuses to see each other alone.

Kuwei: Helnik

Who wouldn't like to have something like them?.

Who wouldn't want to be with a powerful Fjerdan? (Zoya, but it doesn't count even though she doesn't want to admit it because Nikolai is fjerdan; fjerdan mother and father.)

He loves that opposites attract.

Nina: Kanej

She loves the dynamic.

Shipper of them since the first time she saw them together.

She wants to be the flower girl at their wedding.

Kaz gets on her nerves sometimes because he doesn't want to accept that he likes her.

Their looks, she loves how they look at each other.

He would never ever say that out loud because he thinks that the shipps are something created by people who don't live in reality.

He loves Nina.

She is his home.

He loves her very much.
