Mirabel Birthday prompt: Mirabel watching as the entire family does a horrible job of acting normal while they plan a surprise party
🙂
Tumblr media
Her family were terrible actors sometimes. For a family of people who were so good at hiding their feelings, thoughts and stress, they were terrible at hiding when they were planning something.
Mirabel could admit, that included her. When she was planning a surprise, she knew her giddiness hinted at something. But she couldn't help it! She just got so excited!
And so it went for the rest of her family. Her birthday was coming up, two weeks away now, and it was painfully obvious they were hiding something. Conversations stopped when she entered the room. Dolores squeaked frequently and refused to make eye-contact. Luisa giggled at random. Antonio kept giving her a beaming smile and asked her questions like, "Do you want a new dress?"
Yeah. Obvious.
The front doors opened and Casita suddenly rattled the floor, hastily pushing Mirabel towards Abuela.
"Ah, Mira!" Abuela's smile was a little too wide and she looked worriedly at the doors as Félix came running in, doing a poor job of hiding the armful of wrapping paper rolls in his arms, and a big bag of what looked like balloons. "Perhaps you could help me with something in town, amor?"
"Sure, Abuela," Mirabel said with an amused smirk. "What is it?"
Abuela plainly hadn't thought that far ahead. She gave an undignified, sputtering cough and quickly steered Mirabel towards the back doors. Casita rippled, hurrying them along. Mirabel could hear Agustín calling, "Pepa, did you get it?" and Pepa practically screaming back, "Keep your voice down, idiot!"
"How about we just take a walk instead?" Abuela said with a sigh. Laughing, Mirabel linked her arm with Abuela's.
Her family was obvious. So terribly, horribly, ridiculously obvious.
It was a good job she loved them so much. Anyone else would tease them mercilessly.

I feel like the unofficial adopted kids (especially the abused ones) will use the last name “Madrigal” to estrange themself from the last name they got from their parents/guardian.
Also, when a kid (or kids) feels unsafe at home do they go to Dolores and/or Mariano? I’m sure it’s a yes but I’m just makin sure.
I kind of imagine a kid running to Tia Casita and going through the secret back door to Dolores. And in the morning all of the other madrigals just wake up and see a random kid at the breakfast table. Lolo silently dares anyone to say anything with her side eye.
In that type of situation she’ll have the kid stay at Casita with Camilo, Mirabel, and Antonio while she beats up the people who made her baby feel any sort of pain (and takes them to the authorities right afterwards.)
And on the plus side, a new baby gets to stay with her!
Lil side thought: The kids definitely call Mariano’s grandmother Bisabuela and it warms her heart so much.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE NAMES 🙏 ITS AN HONOR
Also I’m pretty sure that’s the case with most of the children there!! Don’t like being a (surname)? Dont worry just be a madrigal! 😃👍
When any of the children just start to feel bad at a certain point, they most likely go to Dolores. Calling her or just go into the room! But I’m sure that if they noticed that Dolores is busy they definitely will go to Mariano too :)
I would say that Dolores would’ve wanted the kids to rather have breakfast in the room since most of them maybe don’t trust any other adult but if they would still want to stay with Dolores (or any of the others) she would bring them down without an expectation!
Sooo true! It’s like- you hurt them and Dolores will hurt you 🙌 Dolores loves taking in new babies, since they’re literally adorable 🥹
Bisabuela on her way!💪 (literally such an cute name for her💕)
Tumblr media
The next morning after Dolores took the two in
Alma would’ve been just like “seriously…an other one..”
Julieta and Agustín would start to eventually adore them! (But then question later on from where they come from)
Pepa would be confused meanwhile casita accidentally left Félix out! (Not in a mean way, he was just late and casita forgot)
Mariano would’ve come to visti too, just to make sure everything’s okay! (Alma would think he came for Isabela, and would put him next to her which annoyed dolores a lot)
Mirabel would tell the kids that she would come play later! (She’s their favorite playmate and it’s normal for them to eat faster than the Madrigals)
Antonio introduces the girl everyone in his family and would definitely keep talking to her!
Isabela would get annoyed that Dolores is doing it, thinking she’s trying to ruin breakfast time (but she actually also adores the new children)
Camilo would try to irritate Isabela on purpose when he sees that she gets annoyed by it, mostly he does it because he knows that she likes the children (he makes sure they eventually talk to her too, if the wanna)
Luisa waves to the little one, also finding it adorable :D (Camilo did it on purpose but then he started to wave on his own)
And dolores just stares Alma down, daring her to say anything about it!
+ Mariano’s grandmother (don’t have a name yet) would be with the children upstairs, making sure they’re okay while Dolores is gone

i just rewatched encanto, and i can't stop thinking about a world where bruno had himself a lil gf/wife, and she was the only one who didn't think his gift was evil. and they had kids (maybe like twins or sum), and when he disappeared, she stayed in la casita, and everyone kinda pittied her. and la familia was like, "bruno really didn't love his family. especially if he abandoned her" or some shit. and like, he left right as his kids were getting their gifts, but like, watched it through the walls or something. or he left after they got them. but then his wife is just so sad cause he left, and she has no idea where he is (she lowkey thinks he's dead but doesn't wanna come to that sort of realization). and when mirabel asks her about bruno, she's just kinda like "tu tio bruna was the kindest person i ever met. and his gift was truly a gift... no one else could see that." and then mirabel is like,"But 'we dont talk about bruno'.' He told me something else...." and then when she finds out bruno is alive and was watching them the whole time, its super cute and heart felt. oh, and his kids get a cute lil song on their own talking about how amazing their dad was....
im mentally ill

Look, Abuela, I'm on TV now! - Mirabel
I recently posted about Encanto on Japanese TV recently and now it aired on Disney Channel US for Thanksgiving a few minutes ago......
Well, we have seen Encanto broadcast on TV networks worldwide the last few weeks, of course starting on ABC last October for The Wonderful World Of Disney's Disney100 celebration (where Once Upon A Studio had its broadcast premiere) as well on Freeform the same month and just last week it was on Japan's most famous TV movie block Friday Roadshow where it generated loads of reactions over there (because cable and streaming is not that popular there, and before the TV broadcast an insta moot from japan told me that Encanto was not as popular there as they focus more on Frozen and other princess films) and now for Thanksgiving over on Disney Channel US. Who knows, maybe for Christmas it may air on UK Freeview TV on BBC One, as the BBC has a tradition of airing Disney movies at Christmas time, one year i think it was last year when Mary Poppins Returns was on BBC One. I do hope it comes to the BBC next month since its two years since Encanto was theatrically released.
The recent TV airings of Encanto reminded me of a post someone made over on X claiming that the encanto fandom was "expired" simply because Disney has no clear announcements on future encanto media (a sequel and/or a Disney+ series) and some say the hype died down. But somehow I do believe that as Abuela Alma said, "THE MIRACLE IS STRONG!" It is evident in the US Disney Parks, and apparently Encanto broadcasts on networks and cable may also rekindle memories of early 2022 and remind us that Mirabel is still so sweet and also how wholesome Encanto is as a movie... Maybe when someone sees it on TV soon maybe it will bring an encanto fan back to the time when talking about Bruno was the hottest thing on the planet.

They were at the river.
Tumblr media
[ID: Young Alma clutching the newborn triplets and sobbing on the riverbank in the moment between when Pedro is cut down and when the miracle forms]
“I asked my Pedro for a miracle. Mirabel, he sent me you.”
I imagine the Madrigals wondered how the miracle worked, especially the triplets who experienced all of it as an unexplored frontier they were all together in. But how it happened? They take for granted that Pedro gave them the miracle when he died at the river, because Alma believes it without doubt or hesitation. Any alternative implies that Pedro could have lived, but didn’t, and the tragedy of that is too immense to hold.
So when the triplets turned five, and their doors appeared, and suddenly they had powers, it was because they were given a miracle at the river, by the father who knew them for less than a day. A gift for their entire lives, from the father who wouldn’t get to be there.
And then they got another surprise when Isabela turned five.
Tumblr media
[link to tweet]
So, extra-canon word is that the two miracles originate from Alma and from Mirabel. I don’t think Alma realizes this: that in a way, she downplays her own importance and impact on those around her (including her sometimes careless words). They were given a miracle, and they must earn it, because she can’t believe that she is already worthy of their home, their safety, and Pedro’s sacrifice. And like him, and their home and safety together, it can all be taken away at any moment.
Tumblr media
[ID: Alma helping haul stone to build a new house in town]
This woman is 75. It’s not only her expectations of the rest of the family; Alma has been living “earn the miracle” for fifty years. It cost her Pedro, so she strives to be worth that. She was powerless and lost everything, so now she must exert control. If that control slips, they will be vulnerable again.
Except the magic came from her love all along.
Anyway: Pedro lives AU 100% canon possible

Searching in the Shadows - Ch.1
Tumblr media
Synopsis: Torn from one world and thrust into another in the space of one night, left to care for her three babies all on her own, Alma Madrigal truly has the weight of the world on her shoulders. Forced to push her grief aside and throw herself into caring for a displaced community along with her children, it only becomes more of a struggle for her to care for her own needs with every day that passes. Will she ever find a way to balance all she has to? Well, with the help of one man, she slowly comes to realize anything is possible in Encanto...
Her babies were sleeping soundly in her arms by the time she made it ‘home’ after checking in on all those in the group, both young and old, and making sure they were comfortable and had all they required to get them through the night. It honestly wouldn’t have been enough for her to say she was tired – she was sure she had never felt this run down and weary before – but she was far too smart a woman to so much as allow herself to entertain the idea she might be able to get some sleep this night. It just wasn’t going to happen, she could tell.
Making her way inside the silent house when it opened the door for her on approach, she cradled her children closer before her breath hitched and she span in place when the door closed and she heard the snick of a lock.
Ay, this was certainly going to take a bit of getting used to.
It was the sound of one of the babies whimpering in their sleep that caused her to turn her attention back to them and she hushed Bruno gently, brushing her lips against his forehead before he burrowed further into her chest and took her cloak in his tiny hand. Once she was sure he was comfortable and well on his way back to sleep, she walked further into the house and the candle in her hand illuminated the way to the staircase which she walked up before her brows knitted together at seeing there was nothing up there aside from one bedroom.
One bedroom in a house this size?
Really?
It was strange, of course, but she gave it little thought as she wandered down the hall to the door and reached for the doorknob. Her hand barely brushed it before immense power surged through it and it began to glow, prompting her to snatch her hand  back and create a little space between herself and the door. She watched in disbelief as an image started revealing itself to her and she gasped when she realized it was herself. Her name was engraved above her head once the image was in place and all she could do was stand there in sheer shock.
She had to be dreaming.
Houses weren’t like this! Houses didn’t do any of these things!
It took her a minute to muster up the courage to reach for the doorknob once again, but she did and gave it a slow turn before pushing the door open and peering into the room. It was then that tears brimmed in her eyes and it took every ounce of strength she possessed to remain standing. It was her bedroom. Or at least an exact replica. Everything was just as she and Pedro left it before abandoning their home and meeting with the group, the bed immaculately made and the curtains tied back, and she had no idea how to feel about it in all honesty.
In a way, she guessed, it was comforting because it was the last place she and her esposo were at peace.
At the same time though, it was so painful because it already seemed so much larger without him being there.
How was it that it was mere hours ago they were sitting together, happier than they had ever been?
It felt as though an entire lifetime had gone by since then.
Once she had stood there for a while, she closed the door with her foot and cautiously made her way over to the bed. She stared at it for a time, still blinking back the tears in her eyes, before letting out a nervous breath and turning around to sit down. No sooner had she done so did her stomach churn and bile rise in her throat.
No.
It was too soon, she just couldn’t do it.
Moving onto the floor, mindful not to jostle her babies too much for fear of waking them, she found a bit of a comfortable position in which to sit and that was when the tears came. For hours, since the candle at her side miraculously saved her and the others in the group, she had been made to ignore her grief and put on a brave face. She made scared, wailing children smile with little fables and jokes and taken the time to sit and hold the hands of ones who’d come alone, telling them they were a familia now and would make it through together. It helped lift her spirits for a time, bringing comfort to ones in need, but now there was nobody to do so for her.
Nobody was sitting with her with an arm around her, promising her that things were going to start looking up and she would work out a way to deal with all she had to deal with in time. How in the world was she meant to care for three babies, giving them all they required to grow and thrive, while looking out for a whole town? A town full of displaced, devastated, broken people at that? It was never something she imagined having to do.
Her life, as far as she was concerned, was all planned out.
She and Pedro were going to bring their children up together, the way it was meant to be, raising the three of them to be both considerada and upstanding members of the communidad. Whether they would have had any more children as time went on, she had no idea, but she also would have been contenta for them to remain a family of cinco. For them to just make the most of the precious time they had with their babies before they got older and had their own families. They were meant to grow old together, she was meant to tease him when he started turning grey and have him tell her she was beautiful and hadn’t aged a day, but she wouldn’t have that.
She was never going to see or hold or kiss her husband again.
Her babies were going to go through life having never known their papí.
For the rest of time, they would be a broken family and knowing his death was needless only made it worse.
Her thoughts were momentarily interrupted when Pepa grizzled in her arms and she lowered her gaze to her, letting her thumb dance over her downy red hair as a silent promise that she was near and there was nothing for her to fear. Her touch soothed her little girl enough to settle her again and she sighed with relief. If there was one thing she wanted to avoid tonight then it was one of them screaming and waking the other two. She was in too fragile a state to deal with something like that, especially on such little sleep, and it would devastate her even more if she snapped at one of them. “Duerman, mis bebés,” She whispered quietly. “All will be well.”
Whether she said that last part as an assurance for them or herself, she truly had no idea.
She thought they could all do with a bit of hope and faith at a time like this though, herself included.
It was going to be those two things that got her through the coming weeks.
The coming months.
The coming years.
In all truthfulness, she honestly had no idea how long it would take her to recover from all she had witnessed this night. It would be engraved into her memory for the rest of her life, she knew that much, but she prayed it became easier for her to deal with in time and the breath stopped being knocked from her lungs each time she thought about it.
She would never go back to being the woman she was before all this happened.
She lived in a different time and a different place, one she would never be able to return to.
No, she had to accept the fact that she’d been living a dream and it was time to wake up and face the world.
It was cruel and unfeeling, not caring in the slightest who it hurt or what families it tore apart.
She was more than a match for it though, or that was what she wanted to believe, and she’d get through this.
One way or another…
