Hello and welcome to Day 5 of "Let's Explore My Plot Bunnies"
Tumblr media
Do you know that moment when you hear an opening from a childhood TV show that you were obsessed with before and your brain is like, "But what if you combine this with this and make it into a fanfic idea?". Cause this is how my brain came up with a Mo Dao Zu Shi Pokemon AU. (The Diamond and Pearl Openings are still my jam to this day)
The AU is not fully detailed in my head (yet), but I came up with two versions for it, so I will just write down some details I already have for both versions:
Ver.1
Edit: As of February 6th, this has a title : "Some roads are not meant to be traveled alone"
Wei Wuxian is a new Pokemon Trainer that just started his journey with his partner Vulpix (Kantonian)
Lan Wangji is a more seasoned Pokemon Trainer (he has been on a journey for at least 2 years) and has an Alolan Vulpix as a partner.
The two meet in Kalos, more specifically in Lumiouse City. WWX wanted to see if he could start challenging the Gyms right away, and his Vulpix got a bit too excited and ran off and got lost.
Lan Wangji is in Lumiouse City for a vacation rather than to start a new journey. His Vulpix is the one that finds WWX's Vulpix. Seeing that the Kantonian Vulpix is very young, LWJ feels anger towards the trainer who let the young fox unattended.
When WWX finds them, LWJ is ready to berate him for being irresponsible, but WWX's "Please never run off again like that Vulpix. I was so scared." stops him in his tracks.
WWX turns to thank LWJ for finding his Vulpix and apologizes for the troubles. LWJ, instead of just accepting the apology, tells WWX he shouldn't be so careless, especially when his Vulpix is so young. (LWJ is kicking himself for saying that) WWX takes offense because he wasn't being careless, nor was he abusive towards his partner.
And so their first meeting is kind of a disaster. That, however, doesn't stop them from constantly meeting around Lumiouse for the next week and then the universe (aka me) decides they should journey around Kalos together. (We all know how the relationship will progress)
Ver.2:
Edit: As of February 6th, this fic has a title:
"Life is a journey you must walk to behold"
In this version, WWX is from Hoenn (Hoenn has a lot of water = Lotus Pier). He and Jiang Cheng have been journeying through other regions (started in Hoenn, went to Kanto and Unova) but this year they want to have an individual journey for themselves.
Jiang Cheng wants to go to Johto, while WWX is going to Sinnoh.
I am on my "Give Jiang Cheng a Shinx" Agenda because just imagine him having a Shinx that is as much of a trouble maker as WWX. (Jiang Cheng's sanity is in danger)
WWX has an Absol as his partner. (The similarities between Absol's lore and WWX's personality make me believe that this is a good pair.) Also, Absol is definitely the one that is more serious and responsible between the two.
Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen are from Johto and their family is well known for being Coordinators.
Lan Wangji has an Eevee that evolved into Glaceon as a partner and has participated in a lot of Pokemon Contests in Johto and Kanto.
Lan Xichen has a Lapras as a partner and is not as interested in Pokemon Contests. He does, however, like to nurse Pokemon back to health and thinks about becoming a Pokemon Doctor.
LWJ wants to go and journey around Sinnoh and learn more about Pokemon Battles (the Lan family doesn't like how trainers that challenge Gyms push their Pokemon so hard, and they are more against Pokemon Battles. In their words, "Contests are a more refined art. Pokemon Battles are barbaric and violent.") LWJ doesn't want to jump to conclusions on that topic, while LXC believes both can be just as good, but it depends if the Trainer is a good person or not.
LWJ, once in Sinnoh, wants to experience a Gym Challenge for himself, so he decides to go to Oreburgh City and challenge Roark, the Gym Leader.
He ends up watching a battle between Roark and WWX instead and falls at first sight for WWX and for his passion for Pokemon Battles. WWX is also very kind to his pokemon, so inner LWJ aproves even more of his choice in love interests.
WWX and LWJ end up traveling through Sinnoh together. (Team Galactic is the main villain that they seem to find/fight against all throughout the journey too)
On the other hand, LXC meets Jiang Cheng and decide to travel together through Jotho, with LXC using this journey to further his knowledge as a Pokemon Doctor and to learn more about Jiang Cheng, who, although says harsh things all the time, is a kind person.
LXC and Jiang Chen end up dealing with Team Rocket during their journey.
There you have it.
This is about everything that I have about this AU. Honestly, I think this one will probably continue to grow in the back of my mind for a while longer before I come up with a title for it and, possibly, even scenes (be it Battles or Contest Performances).
So, what do you think? Good? Bad? Let me know!
I might post some more things later today, but for the moment, I am gonna wish you guys a good morning/day/night.
Till next time,
- TooManyPlotBunnies-Send Help

I picked out some fun pose refs to practice and also draw Brendan in his contest outfits.
Steven and Wallace definitely made Brendan do a photoshoot after gifting him the outfits. They make prints of their favorite photos and, every time Brendan participates in a contest, they hand them out with the same overwhelming enthusiasm that Steven has when he gives cool rocks to random people. It is incredibly embarrassing for Brendan, but he can't deny that he loves it.

Worldbuilding Headcanons #3
contests and contest spectaculars! (hoenn specifically, sorry sinnoh)
contests were started in hoenn, in fallarbor. it was a community bonding activity for the small, agricultural town. the format was a bit different from modern contests. there was just the talent round, and it was a knockout format. people would be put into groups of four and use a move. whoever got the most applause would go on to the next round until there were only two people left.those two would then compete for five turns. whoever won best out of five was the ultimate winner.
it started off small, only between the people of fallarbor, but a few travellers spread word of this fun show and it grew into a whole spectacle people came from all over hoenn to watch. unofficial contests started popping up across the region, though none were as big or popular as fallarbors.
after a few years, someone stepped forward and made a committee to keep track of all the contests happening across the region and standardize the rules and prizes.
the former format continued for a while, but a major problem began to arise. it'd been known for a while after the initial boom, but ignored: the knockout style competition simply took too long for one sitting. it was fine for a small town or for a big once a year competition, but it was not as fun to sit all day for something more casual.
the contest committee got together and hashed out an entirely new way of doing contests. there wouldnt be just one free for all category, but five: cute, beautiful, tough, cool, and clever. people would have to tailor their moves to the category they were competing in. there would also be two rounds--the appeals round and the talent round.
the talent round was similar to the original format with four people using moves to impress the audience over five turns. the appeals round meanwhile was brand new and perhaps made to take advantage of the fact that contests were going to be filmed for tv. in the appeals round your pokemon (and later, it would be common for the trainer to join in as well) would perform a routine meant to embody their category to a panel of judges. it was the first round and only the best four would move on to the talent round.
this format worked well for a handful of years. too well, perhaps. their gamble with showing contests on tv was a huge success creating a second, even larger, boom in interest in contests. at the next committee get together, they announced the formation of four ranks: normal, great, ultra and master. if you won a ribbon in one of the ranks you'd be able to move on to the next for that specific category.
this has ended up being the basis of modern contests. however, a few of the top coordinators were unhappy. they were the big stars, the ones who had their own merchandise and fanbases. they didnt like how mundane even a master rank contest was. any contest hall (and nearly every major city and town in hoenn had one by this point) could put one on and any casual could win a master rank ribbon. they found it offensive to them, the ones who were trying to make coordinating into a full career.
thus, the contest spectaculars were born. they had the same format as a regular contest but were meant for professionals. unlike regular contests that were held whenever the contest hall wanted, contest spectaculars had a season like with sports. you needed to compete in specific contests over the course of the season in order to attain a decent enough regional ranking in order to participate in the grand festival at the end of the season. the winner of the grand festival would then win the title of hoenns top coordinator.
this separated the casual coordinators, the ones doing it for fun, from the professionals who made it a job. while it was difficult to get all the necessary ribbons, making it all the way to the contest spectacular level easily could make you rich and famous. lots of coordinators at this level also have jobs as idols or actors, adding even more to the image of a coordinator as something glamorous.
however it also attracts a lot of attention. paparazzi, invasive journalists, and rabid fans are a huge problem. this is especially a problem as a lot of major coordinators are minors. the contest committee does its best to minimize any contact between known gossipy reporters and minors but they cant do much if things happen outside of a contest hall. still, it's a common goal for kids and teens to become a top coordinator.
and of course, contests have spread from hoenn to other regions, becoming a worldwide phenomenon. sinnoh was one of the first and added several twists to the hoennian formula. most other regions adopted one or the other styles, hoennian or sinnohan. theres a bit of a rivalry between the two regions, even if coordinators from hoenn will regularly participate in sinnohan contests and vice versa.
in the end, contests are the most popular form of pokemon based entertainment in hoenn, even more so than professional battling in most years. the two's seasons even overlap a bit (contest spectaculars running from late august to early february and the professional battling circuit running from late january to early july) creating more of a rivalry. however, contests always seem to win out in hoenn, if only because it was started there.

My Dream Pokémon Game: Pokémon Contest Legends
Despite the fact that since Ultra Sun and Moon I think Pokémon has mostly been on a decline serving up fairly poor games, especially in the main line entries, Pokémon still has a special place in my heart. So I wanted to talk about what spin off game I would love to see happen in the series.
An element really hyped up in the anime is Pokémon Contests giving full ass contest arcs, this would trickle into the manga as well and in my imagination Contests were a big deal in the world. For me they were always this nice element where you weren't having animals beat each other up but preforming with an animal and that felt very different and very sweet. So this game revolves around Pokemon Contests expanding them into a full fledged game rather than a side event.
Tumblr media
Customization
This is the name of the game, this game is all about showing off and feeling like you really are connecting with your favorite Pokémon. Taking the cute mini games of the series and elevating them to not a half ass side show but a fleshed out part of the Pokémon world. Having a full roster of lovely outfits for you and your Pokémon to share. Dressing up Pokémon and yourself was such a massive feature of contests in the Pokémon anime and is a long time requested feature of many fans which has only happened a few times. Cosplay Pikachu was given a limited set of outfits, ash hat pikachus exist to give Pikachu a little accessory, and Partner Pikachu and Eevee were both given several outfits in Let's Go. So I think it's about time the dress up was elevated both for trainers and Pokémon.
Your Pokémon and you preform together in contests showing off your style and kicking butt at bringing the elements of contests together as you aim to be the Contest Master. The Pokémon outfits could work with compatibility frames and work on body type molds so some outfits are for some types of bodies like serpentine bodies, quadruped, humanoid, etc.
Clothing should be totally ungender locked your performers and performers get fucky with gender some times. A lot of human outfits can be meant to match with Pokémon but also should have some fun costumes, references to older trainers in the series, and some modern Harajuku deals to really sell the fashionable customization elements.
Customization could be bolstered like in Animal Crossing by allowing people to upload patterns and designs and really allowing a player's agency to go above and beyond for these contests to create truly dazzling and unexpected performances.
Tumblr media
Pokémon Roster
The game mixes things up breaking away from your normal choice of starters by instead leading you chose from one of three Mythical Pokémon who were amazed by your performance getting to chose between Victini, Manaphy, and Celebi as your starting contest Pokémon. Instead equally fun would be a mystery Dungeon esc personality quiz that results in you getting suggested one Pokémon that fits your personality but the ability to instead chose any you like after from a selection of Pokémon. You could even go with just picking between Eevee and Pikachu the series two mascots given Let's Go gave them several adorable outfits already and they are extremally iconic starters most people wouldn't mind not even evolving.
I think ideally this game could work with the existing models from Pokémon Unite along with creating new models of similar qualities since the game already has lots of outfits to dress up your mons in but obviously the 59 final evos with 54ish [not totally sure] Pokémon from the evo lines making a total of 103 Pokémon already model in the style. Double that to like 200 and bam that's a respectable roster for a Pokémon game. If you were getting frisky you could go with 300 even. Add some contest staples from the anime and games like Altaria, Milotic and Seviper and you got a classic roster that is sure to hit generations of people in the nostalgia bones.
Tumblr media
Pokémon Catching
Catching Pokémon would work similarly to Legends Arceus with it being quick and easy to throw balls at Pokémon and mostly being a human vs mon kinda vibe but with the ability to send out your Pokémon to help support you in catching Pokémon. The battle mechanics are not the focus and instead the contest abilities simply help you put pressure on Pokémon. You'd have dex like in the legends game with tasks to complete that progress and give you rewards.
This could bring in a classic element, shiny hunting, and more to broaden the games audience and still allow for the really personal feeling of teams in Pokémon games.
That said I could see a method of catching Pokémon that is instead Pokémon basically willingly joining up with you after wild performances but perhaps a system like that and a system like Legends Arecus both could co exist.
Tumblr media
Pokémon Raising
Pokémon can progress through capturing Pokémon, entering contesting, clearing dex challenges, and pokefood. Like in legends arecus and go releasing Pokémon can provide you with food to feed your Pokémon to raise their contest stats taking a bit of the old Pokeblock system but adding a new twist to it. In addition other Pokefood could be bought in shops and stuff and sharing a meal with your Pokemon can raise their stats and your relationship together up.
I think taking the existing bounding mechanics and shifting them to work outside of a battle oriented context will be less annoying for the hard core end of players who feel it is breaking their immersion in a Pokémon battle since in a contest feelings, bounds, and relationship all make perfect sense.
Tumblr media
Narrative
Narratively I would love for the game to have more social elements and be less focused on saving the world although it could still be a factor, it be silly fun to stop the world from ending by everyone putting on the best Pokémon contest ever. I do think the stakes of just aiming to be the best Contest Master are good enough though letting the player kind of pace their own side goals.
It wouldn't hurt for a Pokémon game to have dating sim elements but if they wanted to skew the game younger then like ya know that could be cut but this is my dream game so fuck it, it has to have dating sim elements and you only be gay in it, my dream game, no straights allowed Pokémon.
Tumblr media
Closing Thoughts
There are plenty of areas I could have went into more detail on but this is already fairly long and it was just really like a little idea I wanted to spill out of my mouth after months of thinking about it. Let me know what you think and what you would like to see in a game like this.
Also if you liked this sharing it and liking it let me know maybe I should make more shit like this and even more then that going over to my Patreon and Ko-fi really let me know I should keep doing something. I am easily bought but even more then those two things recommending me for work is always fantastic, I always appreciate being reached out to rather then having to apply from ground zero.
