'The 20th century was known for some colossal figures in the sciences. One such figure is currently receiving a surge of interest: physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb. That’s because of a major new film by Christopher Nolan. The film has opened old debates about Oppenheimer’s communist sympathies as well as the enduring question of the morality of making let alone using atomic weapons.
But for me, the Oppenheimer film brings back memories of Edward Teller, an Oppenheimer nemesis noted in the movie, and likewise a father of the bomb: the hydrogen bomb, the hell-bomb, the super-bomb. It was this summer 20 years ago that I had a fascinating encounter with Teller — on his deathbed.
It was July 15, 2003. I had come to interview Teller for research I was doing on Ronald Reagan and the Cold War. Teller had been a major influence on Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI).
When I arrived at Teller’s house in Palo Alto, Calif., I was shocked at the total lack of security around this man who had invented history’s most powerful weapon. I was even more shocked at his condition. I had come upon a dying man.
The 95-year-old was almost completely horizontal in a light blue recliner. He struggled to talk and even breathe normally. A bunch of books sat nearby. The closest one, which Teller was reading, was “Men Who Play God: The Story of the Hydrogen Bomb,” by Norman Ross, which fittingly, focused on men like Edward Teller. Above all, it was about Teller, being the father of the hydrogen bomb. And yet, Teller was hardly one to assume he was playing God because, given that he had lingering questions about the mere existence of God, which I was about to find out.
Amid a long discussion with Teller, which ranged from Ronald Reagan to Reykjavik, one subject kept returning: religion. Teller told me emphatically: “I strongly believe that I should not talk about things I don’t understand.” And yet, it was the subject that kept coming back up. It was the elephant in the living room.
So many topics of discussion prompted philosophical-celestial reflections. At one point, we somehow ended up talking about the complexity of a strand of DNA, which led to a dialogue about a possible Designer. When I later talked to Teller’s assistant, I told her about our religious probes, and alas, how they seemed to consistently hit a dead end. “He’s keeping it to himself,” she agreed. Until literally the very end.
That end came just a few weeks later, when Edward Teller died Sept. 9, 2003. To my knowledge, I was the last person to interview him.
There’s much I’ve reflected upon since that interview with Teller 20 years ago, but the one thing that keeps coming back to me is that human beings really are hardwired for God. Teller sensed it. Certainly in those final days.
Ultimately, this man who once unlocked the power of the universe in the atom — this man of whom it was alleged “played God” with the hydrogen bomb — laid alone in his bed waiting to one day meet his maker. It is the ultimate fate of each of us. And at some point, we will all know and understand. Including Edward Teller.'

Band of Brothers Ages: IRL vs. Actors
Did you know that according to a 1947 study, almost half the men who served in WWII were still under age 26 by the end of the war?
What this is : A (very long) post comparing the ages of the actors in Band of Brothers vs. the IRL figures they are portraying.
Background: Did I need to do this? No. Did anyone ask for this? Also no. Did I do it anyway? Yes.
Disclaimers: This is SUPER approximate for the most part. I based IRL ages off of D-Day unless otherwise noted, and actor ages off of January 1, 2000, the year filming took place (the latter is where the most variation will be because I didn't try to figure out what month filming started). I also didn't fact-check birthdays beyond googling. Most are sourced from the Band of Brothers and Military Wikis on fandom.com, Wikipedia, and IMDb.
I broke them up into rough categories, which are, again, approximate. I know I often forget how young the real life people were here, and this was a good reminder of that. I also found it interesting to see which actors were actually younger than their roles!

Rick and his band of survivors – Daryl, Morgan, Maggie, Carol, Michonne, Glenn, and more – struggle to survive their bleak new reality where the living pose as much of a threat as the hungry, roaming undead. From Alexandria and its promise of a better life to Negan’s ruthless Saviors to the Commonwealth’s corruption, every harrowing, suspenseful moment is here. But hope never dies, for as Rick defiantly puts it, "We’re the ones who live.”

For the GOOD and true HONOR of our beloved country, the United States of America, in the NAME of ALMIGHTY GOD, LYNCHING should be abolished.  Opinion seems unanimous that the United States Government possesses permanently the greater jurisdictional control (about 3/4) over each United States Citizen; and the State in which the citizen resides holds the remaining (1/4) jurisdiction.
Hence the elimination of LYNCHING, our most heinous STIGMA, should be accomplished through the Federal Government, because the respective States, for more than fifty years, have failed to suppress LYNCHING.  Therefore, we urgently appeal to our honored President, and hereby PETITION him to URGE the enactment into LAW, during the Extra Session of Congress, of either Senator France's or Representative Dyer ANTI-LYNCHING BILL.  By such worthy and magnanimous ACT, Mr. President, you will immortalize your NAME like the illustrious Lincoln when we signed the Emancipation Proclamation.  Amen.
For the Women.
(Miss) Emma J. Chrichton
For the Men.
David Newton E. Campbell
Secretary I.U. League
P.S. We hope to secure millions of signatures to this PETITION and forward same duly.

Anne Bancroft and Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate (Mike Nichols, 1967)
Cast: Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft, Katharine Ross, William Daniels, Murray Hamilton, Elizabeth Wilson, Buck Henry, Brian Avery, Walter Brooke, Norman Fell, Alice Ghostley, Marion Lorne, Eddra Gale. Screenplay: Calder Willingham, Buck Henry, based on a novel by Charles Webb. Cinematography: Robert Surtees. Production design: Richard Sylbert. Film editing: Sam O’Steen.
The Graduate and It Happened One Night (Frank Capra, 1934) are both fine examples of the "runaway bride" trope, but there the resemblance ends in irony. In the latter, Ellie (Claudette Colbert) balks at the altar and runs away, veil and train streaming, into the arms of Peter (Clark Gable), but we never see them together: The film ends with the sound of a toy trumpet and we see the "walls of Jericho" blanket falling. It's a gratifying "happy ending," in which order is brought out of chaos, which is the way a romantic comedy is traditionally supposed to end. But in The Graduate the situation is reversed: The wedding that is supposed to restore order ends in chaos, as Benjamin (Dustin Hoffman) arrives to carry off Elaine (Katharine Ross), interrupting the nuptial kiss after the wedding is over. And then we see them together on the bus, as Nichols holds the camera on their faces just a little longer than he might: The smiles on their faces begin to fade, and uncertainty takes hold. We aren't supposed to wonder about what happens to Ellie and Peter, but we can't help feeling the chill of reality fall over Elaine and Benjamin. Watching The Graduate today, I find it a troubling, even cynical treatment of some serious themes. Benjamin, for example, seems to be designed as a comic figure, with his little gulps and tics and his awkwardness when faced with the seductive Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft). But a more sympathetic viewer might diagnose him as clinically depressed, desperately being borne along by the tide of events, just as he's borne along by the moving sidewalk at the airport in the film's beginning, and then trying to avoid the consequences of the freedom he has earned by graduating. He escapes from the adult world into his room, with its burbling fish tank that foreshadows his underwater escape when he's expected to "perform" in the scuba gear he's been presented by his parents. When he does commit himself to a course of action, deciding suddenly and almost arbitrarily that he will marry Elaine, he has clearly lost his mind. And is there a sadder figure in movies than Mrs. Robinson, who lives in alcoholic denial of the disaster her life has become? Bancroft's performance in the scene in which Benjamin tries to get her to open up about her life is simply stunning. The screenplay by Calder Willingham and Buck Henry is the only really funny part of the film, with its classically quotable lines: "Plastics." "Mrs. Robinson, you're trying to seduce me. ... Aren't you?" "I think you're the most attractive of all my parents' friends." It's Nichols's direction that turns our attention to the reality undermining the comedy. The Graduate is often seen as a kind of twin to Bonnie and Clyde (Arthur Penn, 1967): two films that announce an epochal shift in Hollywood, upending audience expectations by addressing themselves to a more sophisticated young audience. As a satire on upper-middle-class life in the mid-20th century that masquerades as a romantic comedy, The Graduate was enormously influential. I just can't make up my mind whether that influence was for the good.

Bob Ross was a skilled teacher. He guided fans along as he painted “happy trees,” “almighty mountains” and “fluffy clouds” over the course of his 11-year television career on his PBS show, “The Joy of Painting.” In total, Ross painted 381 works on the show, relying on a distinct set of elements, scenes and themes.
When he was young, an accident in his fathers shop cost him the tip of his left index finger and he seems to have been self-conscious about the injury; in later years he would position his palette in such a way as to cover the finger. His hair was naturally straight but he permed it to save on haircuts.
In 1961, at age 18, Ross joined the U.S. Air Force and was assigned to an office job as a medical records technician. He then spent 20 years in the military. Much of Bob Ross’ time in the Air Force was spent at the Air Force Clinic at the Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks, Alaska. He performed well enough to eventually become a master sergeant.
William Alexander was a former German prisoner-of-war, who moved to America after his release at the end of World War II and took up painting for a living. Ross was self teaching himself to paint but he eventually traveled to meet Alexander and learn from the man himself.
Robert Norman Ross died July 4, 1995 at the age of 52
