Yang and Ruby’s definition of love was based on each other as that’s the love they got
What do you think it did to them
What would it do if your definition of love had no choice but to hurt you what would you do if you had no choice but to hurt them back
Yang could be the best older sister in the world that won’t give her a bigger age gap it won’t give her a parenting guide book it won’t make her tall enough to reach a medicine cabinet at 5 years old it won’t bring her mom back to life or give her a healthy framework to base how she treats Ruby she can only guess and even with all the best guesses it would still mess Ruby up
Ruby could be the most well behaved kid in the world that won’t make her any less of a toddler it won’t make her less hungry it won’t make her less confused it won’t make her ok after her mom died it won’t make her any less upset when her needs can’t possibly be met it won’t save Yang it won’t bring their childhoods back
They love each other so so so much they kept each other alive in a broken situation after the tragedies that befell their family but their was no other options it had to hurt

in search of strq family lore, i wanna talk about this particular screenshot:
Tumblr media
this is a happy memory. the first one ruby goes to try and concentrate to use her silver eyes. interestingly, there's no corresponding sad memory from ruby's childhood.
based on tai's and yang's appearances + the presence of the tiny red wagon, i'd say this takes place after summer's disappearance, but before yang goes looking for raven (i doubt yang would be that excited next to an object that would remind her of a traumatic experience of almost dying lol) which makes the 'only happy memories, no sad memories' even more interesting.
the sunflowers. they're overgrown. they're not in planters. were they wild to begin with? were they planted and taken care by summer? tai takes care of them in the present, it's a flower associated with him; a sign that he's doing much better now than he was back then? tell me your secrets sunflowers.

The new rwby short reminded me of one of my favourite aspects of team rwby. Which is that it starts with Weiss and Blake being two traumatised teens with dark backstories who meet Ruby and Yang who are like wow! You guys seem to have a lot of baggage and we'd like to help with that. We're just normal sisters but we'll do our best :D
And then cut to 9 seasons later when Weiss and Blake have conquered their demons, reconnected with their families and are slowly healing meanwhile every small drip of lore we get about Ruby and Yang's family feels like this

"Maybe we don't have the full picture."
You know as someone who has spent the last year talking about how Ruby and Yang (and by extension, WE the audience) don't actually know NEARLY enough about their family history as they/we have long assumed thanks to Tai and Qrow being SUPREMELY unreliable narrators...
Yeah, this ABSOLUTELY feels like foreshadowing.

Arc family headcanon:
Papa Arc attended Beacon Academy with the STRQ team and graduated with honors. Physically, he was one of the best, walking on par with Taiyang Xiao Long.
Mama Arc was a doctor whose skills were passed on to her older daughters, but only to some of them.
Papa Arc, after graduating from the Academy, did not stay a hunter for long, after about two years he went to the police and ended up in a special unit of hunters.
Semblance of Mama Arc – Healing yourself and others. It was partly because of her likeness that she became a doctor, but only partly, for even without it she was an extremely capable specialist. Also, her semblance helped her during numerous births.
Semblance of Papa Arc – Berserk. No matter how much damage he took, he didn't care as long as he had an aura. From the received damage, he only became stronger and faster, which was convenient against a group of armed opponents. In addition to his semblance, Papa Arc has a huge amount of aura that makes him unstoppable. With prolonged use of the semblance, his skin begins to redden a little and the aura is consumed faster.
Papa Arc height is 189. Semblance doesn't make him bigger, and does not add muscle mass.
Mama Arc height is 176. She is taller than all her daughters, Jaune could only overtake her closer to 17 years.
Throughout his career as a hunter of other hunters, Papa Arc has encountered the Branwen twins several times, but only crossed swords with Raven. Their fight did not lead to anything and they just dispersed.

Day 2: Old Memories
It was an old photo, the four of them together and smiling. Summer had made four copies, so they could stay together even when they were apart, and remind them of better times in the darkness of the work they did for Ozpin. Tai traced his fingers over the faces of his teammates, his family. It had taken everything he and Summer had in them to get the twins to smile, only for Summer to hide in her cloak.
He missed those days, when they were invincible, before darkness and doubt set in and taught them that they were not.

Thinking about how paranoid early Yang was about Ruby always getting in trouble and kidnapped and everything and even though she’s clearly constantly so god damn worried with the movie and everything she’s not completely going insane and I believe this is why
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ruby’s gotten robbed and kidnapped and had people killed in front of her and she’s just very incident prone and there’s only so many ways to deal with that that aren’t locking one inside and or tying them to something so they don’t run off

in 1.1, ruby talks about her sister who is about to start beacon that year, and follows it up with "my parents always taught us to help others [...]" which comes of as little odd, but okay.
in 2.6, yang talks about her and her sister's childhood, and when she talks about their parents, it's very much "our parents", "our dad" and "our mom". but after she says summer's name and once she gets closer to the reveal, she switches it up: now it's "my dad", and then "my mom" when she talks about raven.
it's subtle but a clear indication that there's like. two separate family units in play here. it's not one big, broken family, where everyone used to be happy together and got along just fine; especially from yang's point of view, it's two broken families and somehow, she ended up being part of both.

Holy shit the fact half of team RWBY has their primary color change is also part of what makes them different from STRQ.
Red, White, Black, Yellow. It was the core idea behind the show, it was the basis of the main character designs.
And it’s the big visual connector between STRQ and RWBY.
But Weiss isn’t really represented by White — her family is. The more she comes into her own, the more prominent that blue becomes in her outfits, and she’s always had those red accents that made her outfits pop.
Similarly, Blake isn’t really Black — that was all Adam’s influence. Blake’s primary color is purple. And the further Blake and Weiss get from their abusers, the more they heal and grow, the more prominent their own colors become compared to those of others who influenced them.
Team RWBY changes because they overcome their past traumas and get away from the people who influenced them negatively. But their adult counterparts — the RWBY that failed — didn’t. STRQ stayed with their same color schemes into adulthood, while team RWBY has changed and grow.

Something I find interesting about rewatching Yang’s scenes talking about her childhood in Volumes 2 and 5 is how she doesn’t really… defend Tai’s actions and the way he seemed to have effectively checked out on her and Ruby for several years after Summer’s disappearance.
Now sure, she doesn’t really decry him, but we don’t hear Yang trying to claim that her father ‘had his reasons’ for what he did or otherwise trying to justify his actions. She just presents what Taiyang did fairly matter-of-factly. Likewise, I think we can see a similarly frank assessment of Tai’s parenting from Ruby in Volume 9 when she directly acknowledges that Yang raised her.
Putting these together, I really get the sense that both Yang and Ruby are very much aware of Tai’s actions and how he let them down as a father, rather than trying to defend or cover for him.
So why has Yang and the story as a whole only given a general, indirect acknowledgement of Tai’s actions and never really confronted him directly about how he let his daughters down as a father?
Well, I think it’s because that rather than trying to defend or cover for their father’s actions, Yang and Ruby are engaging in that much less melodramatic but ALL too common practice of just… not talking about the problems of a close family member.
Rather than going through the surely difficult and ugly process of confronting Tai over how he failed them as a father, Yang and Ruby have taken the fair easier option of simply not talking about it. Even though both of them, particularly Yang, are very much aware of the problem.
It also probably doesn’t help that in the present of the show, Tai has grown into, if not a good parent per-say, at least a decent one. Which in turn probably gives Yang and Ruby even more reason to just… not talk about that time he kinda-sorta abandoned them for several of their formative years.
See also, what Tai does to help Yang’s recovery in Volume 4. Sure, some of his methods were questionable, but he did ultimately help Yang recover and move on, which I think in turn makes Yang all the more reluctant to confront him on his past failings as a father.
So where do I think this is all going?
Well, with the Volume 9 finale clearly sowing the seeds for a major arc of Ruby and Yang diving into aspects of their family history they never knew about, most notably the long-awaited truth of what REALLY happened to Summer, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if some other long-brewing issues started bubbling to the surface as well.
As I’ve stated in other recent posts, at this point Yang’s original recounting of her family history to Blake all the way back in Volume 2 now absolutely REEKS of ‘unreliable narration’, and that there is clearly a WHOLE fucking lot that Yang, and Ruby, have no idea about regarding their parents.
So if during the process of Ruby and Yang finally digging into their family past, they happened to discover that Tai and Qrow have been keeping some massively important pieces of information from them all this time, effectively lying to Ruby and Yang for YEARS?
(say about, I dunno… Ruby’s ‘real’ father actually being a certain angry/depressed bird woman?)
Well I’d say that would be just the thing that could blow the lid off right off a LOT of resentment towards her father that Yang has been bottling up all this time.
I’ve stated this before, but I think it’s worth keeping in mind that ALL of Team STRQ have been presented as well-meaning yet massively flawed/shitty/fuckup parents to Ruby and Yang in each their own way. For one, all of them bailed on their daughters in one way or another, whether it be Raven and Summer bailing physically, Taiyang emotionally/psychologically, or Qrow doing a bit of both.
Thus far, we’ve seen two members of Team STRQ confronted by either Ruby or Yang over their failings as a parent and been subsequently driven to improve: Raven by Yang in Volume 5, and Qrow by Ruby in Volume 6. Which in turn leaves Summer and Taiyang, the supposed ‘good parents’ as the more ‘overt’ text of the show has led us to assume.
Of course, over the course of the last three volumes, we got more and more hints, before the ending of Volume 9 confirmed, that Summer Rose was not in fact the perfect ‘supermom’ that Ruby and Yang remember her as, having lied to and walked out on her family to go on mysterious mission with Raven from which she never returned.
And reading between the lines, Tai’s own problems as a father have been sitting right in front of us since Volume 2, only just beneath the surface as Yang and Ruby decline to really talk about them.
So with a story arc focused on exploring the truth about Summer Rose looking to be close on the horizon, a long-simmering confrontation between Yang and her father (one that could likely strongly parallel her confrontation with Raven) seems likewise inevitable.
