This Brazilian frog might be the first pollinating amphibian known to science
Nectar-loving tree frog likely moves pollen from flower to flower
Tumblr media
The creamy fruit and nectar-rich flowers of the milk fruit tree are irresistible to Xenohyla truncata, a tree frog native to Brazil. On warm nights, the dusky-colored frogs take to the trees en masse, jostling one another for a chance to nibble the fruit and slurp the nectar. In the process, the frogs become covered in sticky pollen grains—and might inadvertently pollinate the plants, too. It’s the first time a frog—or any amphibian—has been observed pollinating a plant, researchers reported last month in Food Webs.
Scientists long thought only insects and birds served as pollinators, but research has revealed that some reptiles and mammals are more than up to the task. Now, scientists must consider whether amphibians are also capable of getting the job done. It’s likely that the nectar-loving frogs, also known as Izecksohn’s Brazilian tree frogs, are transferring pollen as they move from flower to flower, the authors say. But more research is needed, they add, to   confirm that frogs have joined the planet’s pantheon of pollinators.

In a game that is largely comprised of very disheartening moments, one of the worst for me in de is when Lena- who has up to this point seemed to be a delightful, kind person- casually drops the fact that she considers Kim to be an entirely different species from Harry and her because he is Seolite. It is such a kick in the nuts and its made so much worse because she clearly meant no offense and tries to awkwardly assure Kim that that doesn't mean she thinks that Seolites are *inferior* and then throws in some bs inconsequential "positive trait" that she thinks seolites have over occidental ppl. It's sort of funny cus its so obviously deranged bullshit. And It's just so shitty, it's this reminder that it's not just belligerent assholes like the racist lorry driver- sweet old ladies like Lena also think Kim is just *a little bit less of a person* too. He is constantly being barraged with this sort of treatment, but i feel like this little moment hits especially hard because its the first instance you witness of someone aiming this shit at kim without conscious malice. Made doubly shitty cus you goaded him into this little diversion in the first place- its a pretty neat illustration of why someone like kim would be so closed off in the first place.

Leo, der bei diesem Satz Adam nicht mal angucken kann, weil er weiß er würde sonst direkt anfangen zu heulen. Ich hör das doch in seiner Stimme. Ich seh das doch in seinen Augen. I've been there

The Federal Aviation Administration receives thousands of complaints every year about the characteristic loud buzzing produced as drone propellers slice through the air. That noise is an issue in other countries, too: Canada and England, for instance, report a sharp uptick in similar complaints over the last several years. Experts believe noise pollution caused by these unmanned aerial vehicles will only worsen as they are increasingly used for package delivery, photography, emergency response, and more.

I just thought this was a really interesting article. da Vinci's rule for painting trees was that "all the branches of a tree at every stage of its height are equal in thickness to the trunk when put together." While that makes for an aesthetically pleasing tree, it doesn't bear out in real life--at least as far as the tree's vascular system is concerned. The tree's vascular channels do not necessarily get smaller at the same ratio as the branches. They need to be above a certain size to be able to continue to move water, and so they may be larger than what was originally anticipated even as the branches and twigs they are in become increasingly slender.
It's also interesting to note that for centuries people just assumed da Vinci's observation about the external measurements of tree trunks and branches also held true for the internal measurements, and that it's only really been explored in detail now. This is why science is an ever-changing set of fields, shifting as new information is added.

Rift magic expert discovers that the life of a single adoptive dad is very hard. Maybe next time he'll listen to the handsome, brilliant dwarf on the matter and leave the title to him.
Magical breakthrough of the Inquisitor and Lord Pavus bound to revolution transportation in Thedas, as soon as they can land without casualties and broken bones.
Full article on the next installment of the Randy Dowager, by renowned author who was deemed not fit for the role of best adoptive dad, V. Tethras.
This has no other explanation than: I rewatched Luca. Realised I knew how to say "Silenzio Bruno!" in Latin. And that Science Bros would MOST DEFINITELY build their own Vespa. After Dorian convinced Aisling that yes, it's definitely a good idea, you should just silence that little voice in your head with this old Tevinter motto...
With that one elven artifact Aisling stole borrowed with Mythal's permission.
And furthermore: the one Vespa song that was missing in the soundtrack of Luca and that is my sworn duty to let you all know...

Brazil's mysterious tunnels made by giant sloths
These tunnels were once believed to hide religious fortunes deep in their chambers, but the real treasure is found in who – or what – created them.
Tumblr media
In 2009, a farmer was driving through his corn field in the south of Brazil when he suddenly felt his tractor sink and lurch to one side, making the vehicle shudder to a halt. He jumped out and saw the wheel had sunk deep into the dry soil.
Much to the farmer's shock, the tractor had broken through what looked like top of an underground cavity. Hearing about this unusual find, researchers came to investigate and were surprised to find a tunnel nearly 2m high by almost 2m wide and about 15m long running across the field and right under the farmer's house. Deep claw marks embedded into the walls indicated its past occupant was not human.
The farmer had stumbled upon a puzzling subject in palaeontology that is still unfolding today. He'd uncovered a megafauna paleoburrow, a prehistoric tunnel dug through rock by what Luiz Carlos Weinschutz, a geologist and one of the scientists who visited the farmer's property, concluded was the work of a giant ground sloth or giant armadillo from at least 10,000 years ago.
These giant ground sloths, described in one paper as "a hamster the size of an elephant", were far removed from today's unhurried, tree-dwelling ones. They grew up to 4m long and walked on all fours, although research suggests some could stand and move bipedally. Almost 100 different species of sloths roamed the Americas between 15 million to 10,000 years ago alongside car-sized giant armadillos that also dug long tunnels through rocks in Brazil.

I've started this week slowly despite this being my final week for turning in any activities for university and that my grades so far are not very good in math. But hey! At least I'm having some nice-looking breakfast and dressing up like an academic.
Ps: yells at you *I'm still the darkest and most mysterious person you'll ever meet even if my bedside "table" is a cute dog!!!*

Rewatched @jelloapocalypse video on the best Scooby-Doo character, and loved all his ideas on how to make them better. Velma especially, I never liked how she is just sarcastic, the resident skeptic, and harsh. So seeing her being all in for ghosts and just genuinely a curious lil lesbian full of adorkableness and love would be so refreshing!
