Tom shouting "careful!" when Eli takes Abby hostage just hits different on a rewatch 😏

SO MANY of Tom and Abby's interactions hit different after a rewatch and that one is no exception.

Tom is very aware of what Eli is capable of and he's also so worried for Abby and maybe- just maybe- for a split second, he worries that this was meant to happen. That Eli isn't just here to run away, but he's been sent to finish the job Tom couldn't.

An eccentric and cantankerous man, John Quidor achieved fame in his lifetime for paintings of banners and fire engines, none of which survive. Today he is remembered for a series of fantastic, grotesque paintings based on the stories of Washington Irving (1783-1859)-a series whose exuberant style differs from the general run of American genre paintings, which tend to be more understated in mood and realistic in style. "The Devil and Tom Walker" belongs to this curious group of works. It portrays a scene from Irving's "Tales of a Traveler" (1824), in which Tom Walker, who was "not a man to be troubled with any fears," encounters the Devil while on an evening outing.

Today I learned...

In 1894, Washington Irving wrote a short story titled "The Devil and Tom Walker," about a man who sells his soul to the devil.

In 1936, Stephen Vincent Benét was inspired by Irving's story to write a similar one, titled "The Devil and Daniel Webster," where a man who sold his soul to the devil is defended by Webster, a real-life attorney.

In 2018, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina aired an episode titled "The Trial of Sabrina Spellman," which features a version of Daniel Webster (played by John Rubinstein) who has sold his soul to the devil.

In 2021, John Rubinstein appeared in Headless: A Sleepy Hollow Story, based on Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," playing a man who has, in a manner of speaking, sold his soul.

It’s time to head for Maryland, USA to head off an alien invasion of sorts with the overly ambitious, roughly made, yet surprisingly entertaining creature feature, The Alien Factor (1978). Fans of horror host Count Gore De Vol will have a delightful surprise inside. And, for those who remember the odd alien creature cover of Famous Monsters of Filmland – with a ‘pink’ background – will finally get to see that monster and three others in this minor… masterpiece (?- Bill, really, I have to say this? – Okay…sigh.) All kidding aside, if for no other reason, this episode (and the movie watched for it) is a blast because of Bill Mulligan’s unwavering love for Don Dohler, his magazines, and his first full-length feature film. For better, or worse.

At the time of this writing, The Alien Factor (1978) is available to stream from Wicked Horror TV, Classic Horror Movie Channel, Tubi, and PPV on Amazon.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by Bill, will be Mark of the Devil (1970), starring Herbert Lom, Udo Kier, Olivera Katarina, Reggie Nalder, and of course, Herbert Fux and Gaby Fuchs.
