The stages of writing Fanfic

This is a good idea. Yes! I love this idea! I need to write it down.

2. *starts writing in a good mood and writing high* Yes.. YES, this is going really well.

3. *Realization hits* This is a terrible idea. Why is this fic just getting longer and longer?

4. *Calming down again* It's alright, I've got this. I just need to get the introduction done and then I can finally write the interesting part.

5. *Panic* No, that's not how I imagined this to go. Noo, what did I write here, this doesn't make sense. What was I even thinking?

6. *Acceptance* It's alright. We got this. We don't have to be fast. We have to be concentrated and neat.

7. *rereading*: No. No. NO, this doesn't even make sense what I wrote here. And here is a plothole. And this isn't explained enough. Context, what context??

8. *Break* Alright, breathe. You can do this. Just.. breathe. It's going to be alright.

9. *Finishing* Alright, Fic is done, rereading done, now we can upload

10. *Uploading and fighting with literally everything (Tags, summary, editing) while always finding more mistakes to correct* I hate everything.

11. *Uploading* Being happy everything worked out, telling myself I won't write such long fics anymore.

RIGHT WHERE YOU LEFT ME, a downton abbey fic.

─── summary: The tragedy brought her world to ruin. The place she'd grown up felt like home no longer, and the burden of her sadness weighed heavy on the people there. When he found her, cold as a winter night and shrouded in her guilt, he did not want to fix her broken heart. He only wanted to help carry the pieces to safety. ─── warnings: angst angst angst fluff more angst ─── fic tag.

CHAPTER ONE ─── a sinking boat (1.8k words.)

IT WAS ALWAYS SO COLD HERE. Amelia hadn’t known what to expect from springtime in New York, but the experience she’d been promised was starkly different from the reality of it. She’d imagined flowers in fresh bloom and carriage rides through Central Park before they went out to stay with friends in Newport. In her dreams, they’d danced beneath the moonlight across a pebbled beach, and they would giggle as they stole a bottle of wine from the cellar to drink together on the terrace.

Her dreams hadn’t been like this. Not one of them.

The room they found for her once all the hubbub had died down was cold and grey and lifeless. Her window overlooked an unfamiliar avenue of cold, grey, lifeless buildings. The daisies in the window box were wilting, and even though on her third day she’d started to ask for an extra jug of water, no amount of tending ever seemed to revive them.

She did not know what to expect from springtime in New York, and she was not vain enough to think the entire city was mourning her loss with her, but it certainly seemed as if her melancholy had become infectious.

( Perhaps it had; the tragedy had been of such magnitude that she knew she wasn’t the only one affected, and if the city was also grieving, then maybe knowing she wasn’t alone would grow to be a comfort. )

other important notes:

some lists are short and list all the characters and their works without having extra links. These are easy to navigate.

1. How many works do you have on AO3? 149, apparently. Bear in mind, most of these are very, very short, including 3 rounds now of the February Ficlet Challenge.

2. What's your total AO3 word count? 297,078

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Frozen is the big one, also Tangled, various Jane Austen fandoms (mostly Pride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey), as well as Downton Abbey.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

The Means of Uniting Them (Pride and Prejudice)

Have You Heard? (Pride and Prejudice, something of a "prequel" to The Means of Uniting Them)

The Young Diplomat (Frozen/Tangled crossover)

Mrs. Darcy and Her Sister (Pride and Prejudice, Darcy/Jane, Bingley/Elizabeth)

5. Do you respond to comments? I do, even if it literally takes a year or two.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I suppose "Have You Heard?", at least of my works that have more readers than I have fingers and toes... (a few of my OC drabble collections are pretty angsty, but almost nobody reads those...)

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Happiest? I don't know. I haven't published most of my darker stuff, so nothing ends too badly. I suppose some of them might be a bit bittersweet.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? I've written a bit, and "vanilla" would probably describe it.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Probably one of them that I haven't started posting outside of some drabbles and ficlets. Maybe I'll get around to some of them eventually. (My WWII Downton Abbey post-canon AU is probably the one I'd love to actually write a proper longfic for.)

16. What are your writing strengths? I've gotten compliments on my dialogue.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Feelings? That's where I feel weakest, anyway.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? A lot of my dialogue can be assumed to be translated from another language, but aside from a few words I never write dialogue in another language.

5. Do you respond to comments?

I do try and answer everyone, even if I just say thanks. I will delete really rude comments, which have fortunately been rare.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I wrote "Because I could not stop for Death" for Mercy Street and killed basically every character at least once, making remaining characters miserable. Except for the last chapter, where I killed the guy we all loathed.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

This is tough because I mostly write happy endings. I think "But let thy silk twist down" counts as one, because Jed Foster is convinced that Mary is dying or has rejected him and then she surprises him by showing up and locking them into the sitting room. And in GLOW, "everything could yield him pleasure" allows Sam and Ruth to get back together over Christmas.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not very often. It's mostly been in big fandoms (Reylo, Shadow and Bone, I'm looking at you) but it hasn't been a big issue on AO3 or Tumblr. And I'm comfortable deleting and blocking.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yes, when I feel it's called for. I write grown-up sex scenes, so there are no wacky positions (unless someone talks about how they're going to throw out their back) and sometimes a breastfeeding mother's milk lets down or a woman struggles to have an orgasm. It's pretty vanilla though and all cishet. In the cock v. dick debate, I lean cock. I don't use other euphemisms for male genitals unless someone is quoting a poem. (I'm not sure that has happened but it totally could with me.)

No one in any of my sex scenes has had any bodyscaping and a not insignificant number of times, someone has left their socks on.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

OMG, YES. I love a crossover. Probably my Mercy Street/Sesame Street crossover has to be up there for zaniness. I did put Shadow and Bone characters in AOGG Prince Edward Island and I have also crossed over All Creatures Great and Small vets (James and Tristan) into the Grishaverse.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I'm aware of.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

I've been asked for permission but I don't think I gave it.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes. During the pandemic, there was the Mercy Street Murder Hotel round robin with @tortoisesshells @fericita-s @broadwaybaggins @sagiow @mercurygray and also the Cruise Ship with @sagiow and @fericita-s.

(Pro tip: it's easier if you agree on your murderer BEFORE you start writing but it was fun writing clues that were 50/50 going to be red herrings.)

14. What’s your all time favorite ship?

Given the number of fics I've written for them, I have to say Mary Phinney/Jed Foster but it really could be smart-woman-who-is-underestimated/quippy-guy-who-gets-he's-smart-but-not-as-smart-as-she-is-and-that's-the-turn-on

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

This may make people sad, but I have a hard time seeing my way clear to an ending on "what is it to be a thin crescent moon" largely because I'd have to do some more plotting to get where I'd want to go. It's never say never but the truth is, I originally intended to stop when they got to the Little Palace, so everything after that was basically improv.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I think I'm pretty good at capturing a character's voice and I've often been told my work is poetic, which I appreciate, as I am a poet.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Long-form plotting. I love to read it, but I get tired trying to create it and often resort to lily-padding (my own term for jumping from scene to scene.) I overuse the word just. I don't play chess well but I cannot resist writing about gambits.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I try to keep it minimal, since I'm only fluent in English.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Mercy Street.

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

What is this, Sophie's Freaking Choice? I really like my GLOW zombie road-trip story "Music shall untune the sky" because I gave them a good ride and there was so much angst! "Hope is the thing with feathers" is a fic I wrote for myself, when I was despairing about Real Life and US politics and human rights, where I let Christopher Foyle offer the comfort I desperately wished for.

By the Numbers update!!

With just over a day left to sign up as a creator for Fandom Trumps Hate 2023, here's a quick roundup of all of the numbers:

We have 705 offers by 527 creators (I've had to update this three times while writing this post!). Of those, 97 are offering to work in ANY fandom! The rest have signed up offering fanworks in 273 fandoms, including 177 write-in fandoms! (To compare that with roughly the same time last year, as we approached 24 hours left to sign up for FTH2022 we had 680 offers from 525 creators in 257 fandoms including 153 write-ins … meaning we have 23 more offers in 16 more fandoms by the same number of creators for 2023 … SO FAR.)

A look at the offers, broken down by type (with last year's numbers in italics for comparison purposes) -

Nearly 65% of creators are opting to let their bidders choose which org to support with their donation. The orgs most often chosen by those who wish to direct donations to a particular nonprofit remain the Transgender Legal and Education Defense Fund, any/all abortion fund, Rainbow Railroad, and the Navajo Water Project. The orgs selected least often are The Appeal, Razom, and Violence Policy Center.

In our listed fandoms Good Omens has increased its lead and its lock on the top spot. MCU caught up with Sherlock and Teen Wolf for a brief 3-way tie for 4th place behind HP and K-pop, but has since gained an additional signup to claim that spot, leaving Sherlock and Teen Wolf tied for fifth ahead of Star Wars, Stranger things, SVSSS, The Untamed, and The Sandman.

Blaine is a gay. He’s known for years and he’s not ashamed. He just wants to be sensible about it as it carries a lot of risks. So he chooses to study Arts at one of the best colleges in the country - Columbia - that makes his parents happy. And it also happens to have the first college sanctioned gay group in the country - the Student Homophile League - for people like him. And that makes him happy. He hopes. He just has to muster up the courage to actually go to one of the League meetings. Instead he wastes his time staring at that icy hippie in his music history class who doesn’t know he exists. He needs to stop pretending people are gay in his head and actually meet some real homosexuals.

Blaine coming of age in 1969. Hippie!Kurt. Elliott and Sebastian as Blaine’s mentor-friends. Unironic use of ‘groovy’. Coming out and fitting in and falling in love.

Most hits: a study of cracked gold at nearly 11k. it's my most popular fic overall, so not surprising! people really like percy & ginny. Second most kudos: everything not black and blue at 1,183. I think being in the same series as a study of cracked gold helps with that. again, my perciver work has been generally pretty popular and this is my oldest one at about two and a half years old, so it's not surprising that it's accumulated a lot of kudos. Third most comments: all we have left are ghosts. This is a Coco canon-divergence wip multichapter and quite popular: people like to tell me that it makes them sad and that the cliffhanger works. 36 comment threads. Fourth most bookmarks: falling from dusk into dawn at 133 bookmarks overall, with 73 public. my darling! I'm glad people liked it, although an oliver wood character study is particularly niche and I wish more people would gush about it with me. I welcome gushing about oliver and percy. Fifth most words: i'll tell a story before it tells itself at 12,157 words. My (neglected) downton abbey cannon divergence fic feat. edward courtaney surviving to pine after thomas barrow.
