Sk8 would be a fave if not for me being forced to sympathise with and accept adam. Disgusting. He's a r*pist, a p*do (I don't want these words in full on my page), and attempted homicider. Why would you even begin to give the "well as a child he was treated like [blank]" bs to me. That's to explain away why people are emotionally unavailable or aren't okay with physical touch or other unusual but acceptable problems. Not something to excuse putting people in hospital, giving them ptsd, or doing anything that intentionally hurts them. The end.

This week is Sk8 3rd anniversary.... So for celebrating, can I ask a few things :

-Who are your fav character from this series? Why?

Season 2 and an OVA are coming (eventually)! Which is more than we can say for other series' so I'm going to remain delusionally hopeful. I think it'd be nice if, instead of announcing long awaited continuations, new seasons dropped like Beyonce albums. Without warning and like an unexpected blessing. Just like this ask so thank you for reaching out!

FAVORITE CHARACTER

Sk8 has a wonderful band of idiots who I adore but Cherry is, by far, my favorite. Most specifically through the interactions he has with Joe because they are just so catty and mean to one another but you just know it belies an affection from their entrenched history together whether you consider them a ship them or not.

I love that Cherry had this rebellious era and continues to do so as a respectable adult while juggling such a disciplined craft and career. Like, that dichotomy is just 😘👌🏾. Goals, honestly. He maintains this split by ensuring that his S persona and his everyday persona remain mutually exclusive similar to how Adam conducts himself. Which, now that I'm thinking about it, might be kind of sad but he is, somewhat, of a man of contrasts.

Like, the way his talents splinter is so interesting. He is a founding member of S wherein he remains a threat, an established and respected calligrapher... plus, I feel like he customized Carla himself. What a nerd! Plus, Cherry is so gender. ✨

THOUGHTS ON SHIPS

Reki & Langa - idiot x idiot, I love it? But also, how silly to show someone something you love so intensely only for that love to envelope them so completely. Both in how they receive your hobby but also in how they just become a part of your life. Plus, Langa sees Reki's strengths that he takes for granted and its so necessary because they both think the sun shines out of each others' ass. Also, I see them as a reincarnation of AshEiji from Banana Fish.

Cherry & Joe - Yes. Was that not evident from above? Yes. They fight like an old (and sassy) married couple and then will have a moment of saccharine sweetness that's just... too much. There's also a hilarious sense of patience Joe must have to adapt to Cherry vs. Kaoru and its more evident because there's who the pair are when they are around others, regardless of who the others are, and then who they are when they're alone. Like, why put on the act, guys? Just kiss already.

Adam & Tadashi - As long as it's consensual, I guess, but I'm sure Tadashi could do better.

Oka & Shadow - Okay, but go with me here. Please thank the chokehold umikochannart had on keeping this ship sailing before they wiped their IG of all evidence.

FAVORITE MOMENTS

"Push me, Reki." - needs no explanation.

Reki defending Miya's honor - When you see Miya's backstory, his isolation is really sad and makes him vulnerable to Adam's predation but Reki punched well above his weight to defend Miya and it effectively brought the kid into the fold and I loved that. And that's on the power of friendship. ✨ Reki really subjugated everyone in that friend group and is not appreciated enough for it.

When everyone cockblocked Joe - Not every show needs a beach episode. This one does.

Sia La Luce after hours - the fact that Kaoru, after being bride carried by Joe, broke out of the hospital just to go running back to Joe is just so... beautifully chaotic and unexpected. Add a zest of Jonah Scott murmuring "We're not alone, right, Kaoru?" and I am undone.

When the might of Reki's rain wheels kicked in - Overcame insecurity by utilizing the gift he'd had all along? AGH. So perfect, so proud.

When Reki's laughter melts into that of young Adam's - only because that was really sweet

Not in the show but: sharing this series with my niece and nephew and them loving it just as much as I do. They're pretty young so the Venn Diagram of "Shows I Love" vs "Shows I Can Share With Them As A Discerning Adult" has a pretty narrow overlap. So imagine my surprise when my nephew randomly makes a SK8 joke or observation or when my niece drew fan art of Carla? We also sing and dance and laugh during the intro and outtro so I hope they remember the series affectionately when they're older.

SK8 the Infinity's ending left a significant amount of people unsatisfied. One of the primary complaints was that Reki, the protagonist, never defeated ADAM, the antagonist. However, Reki's arc was never about winning. In fact, the show has never endorsed winning being the goal.

In most sports anime, there's a typical progression: Protag wants to be the best in a sport, and is often an underdog with great potential -> protag goes through Difficulties and trains -> protag eventually becomes the best and wins. But in SK8, winning was never the goal. It was merely a side effect of having fun.

Langa snowboarded with his dad because it was fun, he gained those skills because it was fun. Langa began skateboarding because it was like snowboarding, it was like being with his dad, and for the first time since his dad's death he found something that was fun. He spent a lot of time training because it was fun. He won against ADAM not because his goal was merely to beat ADAM, but because racing against ADAM was fun, and learning how to beat him was fun.

ADAM is an antagonist not necessarily because he's strong, but because he puts winning over having fun. He once had fun with skating, but his childhood conditioning, the pressure to be perfect in everything, eventually won out, and he stopped having fun because he focused on being the best. But, he's unsatisfied with being the best. He wants to skate with someone, he wants the thrill of high speeds while holding someone's hand, he wants to have fun skating with a friend. He needed to learn that skating isn't just about an adrenaline high, a spare moment of escape; it's about doing something fun.

And that is why Reki, the protagonist, didn't win. He didn't need to. He just needed to learn the core message of the show: Being good isn't the point, having fun is. Reki is good, but he isn't an elite skater, and for a time that gives him doubts. But he learns that fun is what matters, not skill level, and laughs after he loses to ADAM because he had fun, even if he didn't succeed.

Small side note: This also contributes to the show's queercoding. Being a perfect person isn't the goal, being a happy person is. Do what makes you happy, not just what's "correct". See the double meaning there? It's no mistake that ADAM, the successfully rich young politician, the skating master, is the antagonist who redeems himself, and is arguably the most queercoded character in the show.

Seeing Genos get jealous over a demon dog, I think I remember seeing him get jealous once before but other than that, I think that was just my mom messing with me

It was season 2, when Sonic showed up, my mom swore up and down that Genos sounded like a jealous wife when Sonic showed up at their home and that Sonic sounded like a taunting mistress. I asked her what she meant, she just said

Ima just get this out the way, I hate Adam. I hate him. I can sympathise with his back story. And I find his past with Joe and Cherry intresting.

But man everytime he's on he's onscreen I am uncomfortable.

I'm glad he regained his love for skating but dear god stay away from these kids.

Snake, I don't particularly like him. But I find him and his motivations intresting. The insight he has into Adam and who he is, the fact he's his mentor in a way.

His entrance into S was amazing. I like how his conversation with Reki helped Reki realise his passion for skateboarding.... Really wish he hadn't taken him into a love hotel for that conversation though.

Cherry is great. I may have geeked over Carla a wee bit, I think Carla as a concept is so cool.

I love how Cherry tries to exude this image of refinement and prestigue... That gets immediately destroyed when Joe shows up.

I love the bond they have, I'd like to know more about their past. I absolutely get why Cherry wanted to race Adam and holyshit that race.

Joe is great. I love how both of them are mentors to the kids, but especially Joe. Seeing him reach out to Reki when he was at his lowest, because he understands is great.

Because as much as they try to paint Joe as a "simple minded gorilla" he's got a ton of heart and he's very smart. And I like that Cherry knows that, I just love seeing them interact and bicker.

May be starting to ship Joe and Cherry.

I love Miya. Miya is definitely one of my favourite characters. He's such a little nerd. I love seeing him with everyone else because you know he's having fun.

There's something to be said that Adam could've become Miya if he regained or never lost Joe and Cherry.

Miya is everyone's snarky little brother, seeing him open up and have friends is just great. When he convinced those women that Joe was his dad and Cherry was his mum 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼.

Absolutely broke my heart when he told Reki he was breaking his promise to him.

Because it shows how much Reki and the others mean to him, he's afraid of losing them. I don't blame Miya or Shadow for their involvement in that.

Was it mean? Yes, but I think they'd have stopped if they knew how much it was affecting Reki.

Because they've made jokes like this at each other constantly and everyone was okay with it. I think they'd regret it if they knew.

I absolutely love Shadow. Shadow went from the enemy to stressed out single parent and we love to see it.

He didn't adopt these kids, they signed the papers and showed up at his house.

He's a great rep for alt people, looks scary but is soft on the inside. His crush on his co-worker is adorable, I love that his day job is as a florist it's sweet.

I love that for all he says he truly cares about them.

And not on the list but Manager Oka, love him. I love how he's always keeping an eye on Reki and Langa. His talk with Reki after the fight, I like him he's good.

Langa x reader, best wingman goes to ✨Reki✨

A/n: Saw a prompt about this and wanted to get it done before school started, basically it's like that American Tv thing like kiss cam? CRACKFIC-ish

So you, Langa and Reki decided to watch a basketball match together. Reki went off to go buy snacks or something. And that left you alone.

With Langa.

Who so happens to be on the receiving end of your crush.

It was kinda awkward. (For you at least.) You wanted to say something but just wasn't sure what.

Suddenly, the crowd starts roaring and you focus your attention on the Megatron. It displayed the filter for the 'Kiss Cam' segment.

As it was making it's rounds, you suddenly see yourselves displayed on the big screen.

Your face reddened at the sudden attention and you turned away to hide.

Form the corner of your eye you can see Langa making an obvious 'no' gesture. You could hear the crowd making disappointed noises.

The kiss cam continued making it's rounds around the stadium, until it landed on the both of you again.

The crowd cheers louder now in hopes that it somehow gets the both of you to kiss. Again Langa makes his 'no' gesture and you shake your head to further prove your point.

The crowd (kind of) boos.

What's unusual though is that it kept coming back to you both. At this point you're distressed at the attention you're receiving.

You're wondering why the cameraman is so adamant on having you both kiss.

Finally, after it's 5th time landing on you both, Langa turns towards you. You turn back to face him and give him a questioning look.

He slowly raises his hands to land on either side of your cheek. Once he's sure that you're ok with his touch he inches closer towards you.

Your heart was thumping.

As your lips were about to touch, Langa turns your head to the side and plants a kiss on your right cheek.

The crowd erupts into loud cheers.

You're face is extremely hot but you don't move yet. Still trying to process what happen.

After half and hour of you both sitting quietly and staring ahead, Langa pipes up.

"I wonder why the camera kept coming to us."

You shrugged but didn't dare to say anything.

Unbeknownst to you (or maybe), Reki was in the camera room. He slipped a $10 note to the camera operator.

"Thank you my good sir."

Imagine if Hiromi was the camera operator and was doing a side job and somehwere in the crowd was Kaoru and Kojiro. May or may not have appeared on the kiss cam.

Heeeeyyyyyy I’ve never partook in the Sk8 fandom before because a very large amount of you are so deep in this new wave of fandom purity culture that it makes the fandom no fun to be in.

I watched Sk8 as it came out, and it was love at first sight. I loved the animation, the races, how colorful and stylish everything was, and I really related to Reki’s struggle with imposter syndrome and overall in just think it’s a great show that I love very much.

But I also found myself relating to Adam quite a bit. His struggle with his strict family, having to be two faced around your family and among your friends/community, wearing a figurative mask and wanting to be anonymous out of fear that your family will discover something about you that you don’t want them to see. It really struck a cord with me, I saw a major part of my life in him, as a queer person.

But no every single person who finds a shred of humanity in his character is called a p*do apologist. Cool guys, very mature. He’s a villain, everyone knows that, he does some p*do shit. News flash, he’s also not real, he can’t hurt anyone. Nobody who likes his character is a p*do you absolute dinguses. Who are you people? Are you the same people that call Rocky Horror problematic? Cuz Adam shares an incredible amount of similarities with Dr. Frankenfurter and everyone loves him (obviously what an icon). Do you guys just not like complex characters? Does every character have to be a paragon of morality? A villain makes the story. Adam is the reason the story happens, he causes the rift. What do people censor his name in this fandom? I’ve been afraid to post anything about how I related to several aspects of Adam’s character and enjoyed how goofy of a villain he was because I was afraid of the purity culture mob making incredibly horrible accusations. I don’t think people realize how nasty and horrible calling someone a p*do apologist is. You don’t know what you are doing throwing those words around all willy nilly. Yall are the ones that are fucking things up. Literally censoring the existence of a character, what a joke. What are you gonna do next, burn any book with a queer character who just sucks? Yall would hate Anne Rice. No Interview with the Vampire? One of the most important works of vampire fiction that exists?Gonna burn some Rocky Horror DVDs and censor one of the most important queer movies of all time just because the villain was a murderer and sexual deviant??? Go to English class and learn some god damn media literacy. Pull that stick out of your ass and laugh a funny camp villain. See humanity in pieces of shit people because none of you are angels. That’s what’s great about fiction. You can do all that in the safety of unreality.

Hi and this account is very fascinating, thank you for what you are doing! :)

I’ve been in the SK8 fandom since the show aired and I’ve found the whole discourse and dichotomy around the character of Adam always extremely fascinating and alas also sometimes very black and white, too.

He’s not one of my favourite characters in the show and I low-key think his trope is abused in media, like the queer flamboyant man with a sort of predatory stance towards the deuteragonist… Yeah, I personally think we can move on, at this point, in all kind of media.

But, what a lot of people tend to forget when it comes to him is that he’s the antagonist, I would dare say the villain, of the show. He’s a corrupted politician who comes from a family of old money and he’s a victim and a perpetrator of the cycle of abuse represented very well by the show, especially when it comes to him and his secretary, Tadashi.

A lot of his fans tend to forget that you can indeed become a perpetrator of abuse when you’re abused yourself, but apparently showing a sad backstory to today’s audience means also losing a lot of nuance on how’s evil and a very clear critic to society are shown. He’s also a psychopathic with narcissistic tendencies, and I think this is what makes him extremely fascinating.

Still, I don’t understand why a lot of people don’t get that the sense of distaste and creepiness we get from him when we watch the show is intentional. It means the writers did their job, he is meant to make the audience feel uncomfortable in many instances, even when he hits and assaults his former friend trying to reconnect with him. His emotional impact is strong and it must be like that, since his role is that of the antagonist in a character driven show. There’s no plot that would have the same role as his.

I personally think that striping him out of all his villainesque features is a disservice to his character and I don’t understand why the fandom came to “woobify” him and sometimes even give to other characters (like the one he assaults) the role of the antagonist, when it’s just formally incorrect.

here i go with another grand list that i was very happy to write! i’m in love with these asks, really. i’ll mention all of them, but at first i was in doubt if i could include one that isn’t ‘canon’, but rather rpf. either way, i added bonus couples for good reasoning! let’s go.

1. wangxian (lan wangji x wei wuxian), from mo dao zu shi — they are THE moment, they are THE couple, they are THE goals. who ever could have imagined someone would come up and write a troublemaker who falls into demonic arts and gets reincarnated to fight together with a sucker-for-rules expressionless man and make it work? they fit into any au as well, this fandom rocks. my lovely cultivators!

2. kagehina (kageyama tobio x hinata shouyou), from haikyuu!! — i dont even play volleyball. i dont even like sports! why do i love this anime and this duo specifically so much? they are so passionate about their hobbies, the rivalry and frenemy relationship? the POTENTIAL. the STORY they have. the "someone better will come and find you" promise. sheer beauty. they are silly and fresh and cute and i dont think i'll ever get tired of it.

3. yizhan (wang yibo x xiao zhan), from the untamed cast rpf — i know all the problematics about writing real person fiction. i KNOW, okay?? but people, let me like them and support them in peace?? 😔 i have so much love for these men, and its overall hella fun following their life unfold, even if they are not working together anymore. nonetheless, they are my dose of serotonin when i need it.

4. daiharu (kambe daisuke x katou haru), from fugou keiji: balance unlimited — i will not scream for a seson 2 here. i will scream for more FICS of them here! there ain't enough! its not even about the 'sugar daddy' appeal, its more about the 'partners in (solving) crime' appeal. oh and also the 'i hate you you arrogant prick but i WILL do anything for you' part. everything and every detail of this show.... seriously though: gold.

5. hilson (gregory house x james wilson), from house m.d — oh, my sweet stupid and repressed doctors, i would do unspeakable things for you. wilson has been through every hard moment of house's life. you can name them, he's been there. through every ridiculous situation of his too. it is overwhelming, honestly. the ending couldn't have been more reasonable and fitting for them, in my opinion.

6. hannigram (hannibal lecter x will graham), from hannibal — this gif alone of them with scratches and smiling conspiratorily to each other sums up their entire dynamic. they're toxic and no one's doing it like them. like, yeah, no shit, who would even dare, right? murder husbands can do anything and eat the rude as much as they want, i will be sipping on my drink and watching intently. (man truly looked at this detective he framed for murder and said he would remember their moment together forever??? just dont throw him in jail then???)

7. shiguang (lu guang x cheng xiaoshi), from link click — these pretty boys traveling through time invented the concept of yearning, and i will not explain more to not give season 2 spoilers. i fell in love with them as soon as i saw the first shot of the anime. it doesnt help that they have the same dynamic as wangxian, too. cheng xiaoshi, my beloved, you would never do anything to harm anyone (not purposefully) and i (as well as lu guang) worship you 🙏

8. renga (hasegawa langa x kyan reki), from sk8: the infinity — let's be true tho, can they never do a sports anime without pulling up homosexuals?? not that im complaining at all. please continue, in fact. every couple in this story is valid (adam does not exist), and i love this spirited, young concept of redescovering the beauty of a hobbie. lovely, all of them, but most specially my langa and his admiration for reki. their dynamic has no complications, its just so sweet.

9. moshang (mobei jun x shang qinghua), from the scum villain self-saving system — i will not share a pic of moshang official art because i find shang qinghua appearence too much childlike and annoying, meanwhile i find him much more interesting in the book and fanarts. in any case, i love this couple more than the main couple simply because our airplane-bro can make everything so hilarious. there are fics of them out there which are peak entertainment (check this one!). mobei's tsundere attitude and shang qinghua's shamelessness are a great combo.

10. hualing (hua cheng x xie lian), from heaven official’s blessing — the longing is unbearable. hua cheng loves this man so much, for real. waiting 800 fucking years?? being his most devoted believer? can you believe the audacity?? my man, though he has low self-steem, does anything to protect his god. he doesnt care about any realm. he only cares for xie lian, his dear god. they are the cutest couple.

bonus: aziracrow, johnlock, tododeku, victuuri, blackbonnet, mafuyama, redblue (from this is how you lose the time war).

these are my favorite ships ever! they are what i scream about alternatively, and when i say so, i'm not joking. one week i'm freaking out over new link click content and in the other one i'm reviewing house m.d episodes. my life's a circle with my favorite ships in it and i ain't regretting anything.

Cherry and Joe are my favourites because they are so Millennial and I feel like I could just chill with them irl and we'd reference all the same memes 😂

Favourite moments: just...Adam in the English dub. Sir. Please stop. He's horrible but so entertaining. Also anything Matchablossom.

Reki/Langa: adorable fluffy puppy love.

Matchablossom: FAVE. I love them. They have old married couple energy and unresolved sexual tension energy and snarky divorced couple energy and besties-to-lovers energy all at once!

Whatever the hell Adam and Tadashi have going on: you know what? Good for them I guess. 😅
