Hello foraging friends! Don’t know how far this has gotten yet but there is a new and potentially DEADLY scam going on where AI generated foraging/botany/identification books are being sold on sites like Amazon, with mislabeled and misidentified species, including toxic fungi. Much of the content is utter nonsense, filled with grainy black and white photos, and authored by people who do not exist. Afaik the scam was first identified by a friend of mine on twt @heyMAKWA and info has only just started to spread.
Please check the sources of any foraging guide books you are considering purchasing and using! Never consume plants or fungi that you are not 100% sure are safe to eat!

“i'm not going to link any of them here, for a variety of reasons, but please be aware of what is probably the deadliest AI scam i've ever heard of:
“plant and fungi foraging guide books. the authors are invented, their credentials are invented, and their species IDs will kill you.”
…So PLEASE be careful if you run across anything of this kind.

AI Generated Bedtime Stories - A Critique
Today’s delightful review is Bedtime Stories, by our VERY ESTEEMED author Data Baze.
Get it? Data base? Anyway...
Book Cover:
Truly a work of art. My favourite part is the cropped jpg in the middle.
Story Review:
This book is a collection of stories designed to “help children explore the importance of moral values such as honesty, trust, kindness and courage”. Quite how honest our author is, or trustworthy, we will have to find out.
One story which highlights just how dull and uninspired the book is, is “Timmy’s Adventure: A Story of Obedience”. Timmy is a boy who has a hard time listening to his parents. So one day he went into the woods behind his house and got lost. He met an owl who told him he should listen to his parents and takes him back home. He listens to his parents from then on.
This is literally the story, but in 400 words. There is no inspiring dialogue. There are no plays on words. The words “he should have listened to his parents” are repeated at least 4 or 5 times.
None of the characters actually speak. The story just tells us the gist of what they say.
Overall Impression:
This is just lazy. These stories have literally just been created by one prompt, and not edited at all. No character development, no real thoughts or motivations, no real world building or actual speech. It might be a kids book, but that’s not an excuse to put in any effort.
