Submas canon vs fanon

The entire time I have been in the Submas fandom I have seen a lot of confusion about what is canonical and what is a wide-spread fanon. Both in the sense of people thinking things were canon when they were not, and (more rarely) people thinking things were fanon when they were not. So I thought it might be useful to put together a little guide.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with using fanon. I use most of these headcannons in my own fics because I like them and canon is dumb anyway. (Note: pokemon is a huge sprawling mass and tends to contradict itself, and there have been changes across the various games/manga/anime)

All quotations are taken from bulbapidia.

Nimbasa Trio - FANON

Elesa has no connection to Ingo and Emmet besides living in the same place. There is one interaction between them in Pokemon Masters, and while they are on friendly terms they don't appear to be particularly close. Similarly, the idea that Ingo likes bad puns/Emmet does not stemmed from their fanon friendship with her.

Uncle Drayden - FANON

The only confirmed family Ingo and Emmet have are each other.

Cilan is a huge fan - CANON

Cilan is a fanboy of both of them in the anime.

Ingo is the older twin - CANON

In the original Japanese Emmet calls Ingo "nii-san" which means older brother.

"Do you have any siblings? I have an older brother, Ingo."

Emmet's joltik hoard - FANON

Emmet's galvantula knows the move cross poison. This is an "egg move" which can only be learnt through pokemon breeding. Since it would take several tries to get this move it probably would have left Emmet with a lot of Joltik. In theory. We don't see Emmet with joltiks in canon.

Ingo's kitty smile - CANON

He smiles like that in the manga. (Admittedly, it's not as exaggerated as the full on :3 people sometimes draw him with.) He also briefly smiles in PLA, but less cat-like.

Ingo's perpetual frown is unintentional - CANON

"<player>! Someone just told me something that troubled me deeply! They said that compared to Emmet, I'm too stiff! But that's just a misunderstanding! I know I smile when I'm having fun! I'd even say that I'm quite proud of how expressive I am when I speak! What? You say you've never seen me smile? I-is that so..."

They are both autistic - FANON

They are related to the twin heros - FANON

They share similar themes and motifs to the twin heros/Zekrom/Reshiram but that's it. They have no canon relationship.

Both of them are heavily coded as autistic. However, it's never been directly stated in the games that they are autistic and (to my knowledge) nobody at Game Freak/Nintendo has confirmed anything.

Ingo has a receding hairline - (debatably) CANON

He is drawn with one in the art book. Does the art book count as canon? Until something in the main games says otherwise, probably. (Though there is some argument to be had that it might be an unflattering haircut instead.)

Ingo arrived in Hisui via wormhole - FANON

"For my part, I simply found myself one day here in Hisui, a region whose name I'd never heard... All I could remember was my own name. I was still standing there in bafflement when the Pearl Clan came to my aid."

- Ingo, PLA. (However, the art book depicts the pearl clan finding him facedown on the ground, so take his standing claim with a grain of salt)

We still don't know how he got there. Similarly, it is quite common to show Ingo arriving during a blizzard/freezing to death and generally in poor health/injured/unconsciousness. But the way he recounts it sounds much more peaceful.

It'a also common to have Sneasler be the one to find him. The art book (of dubious canon) shows a human pearl clan member finding him, and Ingo's quote seems to confirm that. It's possible Sneasler was involved but she isn't mentioned.

Ingo got amnesia from hitting his head - FANON

We don't know how he got amnesia.

Ingo remembers Emmet as "the man in white" - FANON

"I'm starting to recall a man who looked... like me. We'd battle and discuss Pokémon, I think... The words "I like winning more than anything else" flashed through my mind just now..."

He makes no mention of remembering Emmet wearing white or smiling.

Ingo calls her "Lady Sneasler" - FANON

Ingo only calls her Sneasler, no Lady. In fact, nobody calls her or any of the ride pokemon Lord or Lady because...

The ride pokemon are noble pokemon - FANON

There are 10 blessed pokemon descended from the heros of old, and these pokemon are revered by the clans and have wardens. The blessed pokemon are divided into two groups, the rides and the nobles.

The ride pokemon are not called noble pokemon, and they do not get titles. Mai talks about "the great Wyrdeer" but does not call him lord or noble.

The art book uses the placeholder XX for the amount of time Ingo has been in Hisui. Some have taken the double digits to mean 10+, however the first digit could easily be a 0. So, we still don't know. Net 0 information.

We have not heard from Emmet.

Separating TMNT Verses and Characters

This is just a quick one, because I've been seeing this happen a lot recently and need to vent, but I really just want to say that it is so annoying when fans won't stop mentioning a TMNT series or character when a post, video, fic, pictures, etc, has absolutely nothing to do with them (this is annoying in other fandoms as well tbh).

If someone makes a post about, say, the relationship between Donnie and Raph in the 03 series, why do people immediately feel the need to start comparing it to other series, or start dragging other characters in? Or, as another example, if someone makes a post about how physically strong the Bayverse boys are, why is there always at least one person who has to jump in and be like, 'well, actually, thanks to his mystic powers, Rise Mikey is actually the strongest turtle in the TMNT franchise, and he can solo anyone'. Like, who asked? If the post is clearly discussing physical strength, and doesn't even mention other iterations, why do you think they'd care about you trying to prove that Mikey is the strongest due to his mystic abilities?

Or if you're reading a post/fanfic, or watching a video that is clearly about one character, and half of the comments are going on about someone else, or just annoying copy pasted phrases (this is worse on TikTok than tumblr though honestly, why does every TMNT post, even ones that aren't about certain characters, need several iterations of comments like 'transfem Leo solos', 'Mikey solos 'I am Rise Leos girlfriend' etc)? I probably am coming across as a bit of an ass here, or I am misunderstanding something, but I just can't see what value these comments bring to a video. Sure, people are free to say whatever they want, but if you are commenting on a video about one character, and the comment is solely a phrase like the ones mentioned above which have no relation to the topic of the video, I just don't understand the point.

When you're in a fandom with many different iterations of the source material, you need to learn that not all of the content is going to be geared towards your particular favourite, or your particular favourite character, and trying to interject them into everything is just going to engender bitterness towards parts of the franchise, certain characters, and even amongst the fandom. I think we've all seen posts that are annoyed at Rise fans constantly trying to take over posts, fics, polls, etc that have nothing to do with Rise, or trying to tell people that their characterisation is off because they are writing/talking about a different version, and some Rise fans don't always seem to realise that the dynamics are very different in other versions. Though I do tend to see this happening more with people who are primarily Rise fans, other parts of the fandom do the same thing, which can get pretty tiring.

I honestly think the fandom would all get along a lot better if everyone could take a step back and remember that not everyone is coming into the fandom for the same things. My favourite character across every iteration I've checked out, (and I have watched/read and enjoyed quite a few iterations at this point so I have experiences across most of the fandom), is Donatello, which is probably obvious from my previous posts, and if I was paid every time I've seen someone jump in on a post about, say 12 Donnie with a comment like 'Rise Donnie would be laughing right now, Rise Donnie would be cringing, Rise Donnie would never', I'd be rich enough to buy the rights of the TMNT myself. Obviously all of the Donnies wouldn't do the exact same things or react in the same ways to everything. They all have the same core, but they are also different characters in different universes with different experiences. Of my post is specifically about one version of Donnie, I don't want a bunch of people comparing him to other iterations or characters, or just generally shitting all over him.

Or a post about something traumatic that Donnie went through, and then someone leaps in with a 'yeah but the Leos obviously have it worse, they've gone through this, and this, and this.' Alright, but this is about Donnie so again, why should I care? If I wanted to discuss Leo's trauma, I'd have mentioned this in the post, or made another post about it.

I think that one of the most egregious repeating examples of this that I have seen is usually attached to the phrase, 'what about x character'. If someone creates something about one character, and you immediately hop in with a 'what about x' it kinda makes me want to scream. Say I made a post talking about how 12 Donnie actually makes a pretty good leader in some episodes, someone jumping in to say'well what about Raph or Mikey in these particular eps' would infuruate me. Or if I say, '03 Donnie really suffered in SAINW, someone jumping in to say, 'well what about Mikey, he suffered too' is more annoying than anything.

We all have to curate our own online fandom experiences, but part of this should also involve the realisation that other people are also trying to curate their experience, one that might be fundamentally differeny from what you want, and that, by trying to interject things about other characters and iterations where they arent wanted, you are probabky just going to make people annoyed.

Some people (maybe not all, but definitely some) will not want you to hop on their post and make it all about a character or series that isn't relevant to what they are talking about, and if you do so, you may face some kind of backlash. I have seen countless people grow bitter towards certain parts of the franchise/fandom and characters because of things like this (I know that I can grow irritable when half of the content that I consume ends up being buried in comments about things that are completely irrelevant). And this isn't just fans of one particular iteration or series, even though some fans have more of a reputation for doing this than others.

I guess my main point is to just have some consideration for others, and reflect on whether or not you'd be annoyed if someone commented on something that you'd worked on talking about a character you don't particularly like, and making everything about them. It can really suck, and I've seen people become discouraged when an excellent fic, character study, post, vid, etc of their favourite character gets flooded by comments of, 'this is more like x character, imagine x character in this scenario, but what about x'. Obviously this isn't the same for everyone, and some people actually do invite people to discuss other versions and characters on their posts, but I still think people need to consider whether or not the comment that they are posting is just going to end in an argument where no one comes away happy.

regarding obikaka, i too find the ship so off putting because it's mostly for obito fans who don't even like kakashi but use him to make obito look superior by making kakshi weak or by having Kakashi constantly be sorry to Obito (for what exactly?). and I think canon itself lay the groundwork for that because obito is such a weak character with such weak motivations that kishi himself used kakashi to validate obito's non existent pain and motivations. It was insane seeing that whole flashback sequence of obito's childhood where his big under dog story is being in a one sided competition with a Kakashi and feeling inferior to Kakashi in his training and his crush on Rin meanwhile in the background Kakashi is shutting down after having to witness his father driven to suicide at age 6 by the village he has to continue to live in. Even Rin's death, on which obito's entire villain origin story hinges, is far more traumatic an experience for Kakashi than it can be for obito. And yet kishi writes adult Kakashi and obito with Kakashi completely racked with guilt and obito and everyone else, including Edo tensei Minato acting like that guilt or obito's weird self righteousness over kakashi's guilt is justified. Because obito's pain and villain origin story completely falls apart unless you have Kakashi specifically, who has objectively suffered far more without turning into a mass murder of innocent people, validate that pain and villain origin story. So obito fans are basically taking their cues from kishi when they continue to write exactly that in their fics and hcs and only use Kakashi as a means to validate obito and nothing else

Hi, sorry it took me awhile to answer this but there's a lot to unfold here so I needed a clear mind to answer it properly... Anyway,

No one in canon blamed Kakashi for what happened except Kakashi himself, everyone else including Obito, didn't think any of it was Kakashi's fault, yeah at first Obito was pretending that he blames Kakashi because he wanted Kakashi by his side when he achieves his goal, he was taking advantage of Kakashi's guilt to convert him exactly like Madara did to Obito using his pain to make him see how corrupted the world is and that there's no other way except Infinite Tsukuyomi but later he admitted that he never blamed Kakashi and that he knows the truth about Rin's death and that he even doesn't want Kakashi to suffer or keep feeling guilty, he just wants Kakashi to be happy too

Having said that, the way the toxic part of the Obikaka shippers and some of Obito fans are acting is not only making Kakashi way out of character, it's doing the same to Obito too, they aren't just ruining Kakashi's image, they are ruining Obito's too because like you, so many people ends up getting the wrong picture about Obito, and ends up hating him because of the way they are portraying him

Not only that canon Obito didn't blame Kakashi, canon Obito never looked down on Kakashi either, at first he was just pretending because he believed that it's the only way to make Kakashi see that his plan is the only way but he acknowledged the fact that Kakashi had the power and the means to kill him several times but he chose not to

In Obito's perfect dream world he didn't just want Kakashi by his side, he also acknowledged the fact that Kakashi is just as good and qualified as him and that he can easily be the Hokage too if he wants

So like I said, those types of toxic fans aren't only being unfair to Kakashi, they are being unfair to Obito too and are putting people off from the entire ship and from Obito too, they are forcing so many people to hate their favorite character and misunderstand him.

You know, this might sound a bit silly but I noticed that this type of shippers never tag things as Kakaobi, it's always Obikaka to them because they just can't stand the thought of Kakashi being on top lol, I always look at the tags of the Kakashi and Obito posts first, if I see the Kakaobi tag there, I immediately know that this person isn't part of the toxic fandom and by that I don't mean that everyone who tags posts as Obikaka is part of the toxic part of the fandom, no... I mean that the toxic part of the fandom hates the Kakaobi tag.

@loadbearinonion explained perfectly the mindset of this type of shippers, not just in the Obikaka fandom, in a lot of Kakashi ships when they make Kakashi a lot smaller and weaker than he actually is while making the other character so big and strong and perfect even tho in canon both of them are equal in size and strength and everything

This is not just sad, it's homophobic and disgusting.

...I’m...not sure I’m overly keen on the like... “Gomez is a perfect example of a man who knows his wife is completely out of his league” “Gomez and Morticia are Connecticut Clark and Malfina” “wife with Powers and Abilities, husband who can’t do anything” memes I sometimes see (mostly it seems from people who are kind of...only tangentially or casually fans, rather than people very active in the Addams fic/fanart/headcanon/etc communities, but still)?

Like...obviously Morticia is awe-inspiring and beautiful and flawless and (usually) very tall which always helps...

But Gomez really isn’t just her useless little sidekick?

For one thing people often use images specifically from the 90s films for this and uh... is THIS “can’t do anything”?

60s Gomez is inconsistently depicted and not as impressive when it comes to swordfighting, but most other versions of him are pretty good when we get to see him in combat...even in a scene as silly/slapsticky in parts as the duel with Vlad in The New Addams Family, he throws Vlad across the room, hits him with multiple spinning kicks, gets him on the floor with a blade to his throat at one point...the musical it depends on which version of the script and also on the actor but there’s certainly versions out there where he is quite skilled...even the rather childish and poorly-written 2019 cartoon depicts him as knowing what he’s doing with a sword...

He can dance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIDabDkcS8o, sing (in the 90s films at least), juggle with swords, he builds a robot in the 60s show, he builds a computer--again, in the 60s--that (while it appears to work nonsensically) can predict the results of horse races with near-perfect accuracy (something modern AI still can’t always do)...what about that scene where him and Fester build an identical (OK, an expert can tell the difference, but Lurch can’t, and Lurch isn’t stupid and he plays the thing every day) perfectly-working replica of an antique harpsichord in 3 days despite having no idea how a harpsichord worked when he started out? Like, yes it’s a comedic scene, but...that takes skill? He also seems to speak multiple languages fluently (exactly which varies from version to version but we can definitely say English, Spanish and Italian). And there’s that scene in the 60s show where he throws multiple knives precisely into the handle of the previous knife with his back to the target. That’s SUPERHUMAN accuracy (he’s also demonstrated fairly good, though not quite so superhuman, accuracy with a crossbow, a spear, and various guns...and some table tennis trick shots at one point, again, the scene looked silly but it would actually take skill to do that).

Like...where are people getting the idea he “can’t do anything” or is useless from? Is it because in the 60s show in particular he often gets into Silly Sitcom Misunderstandings? Because...it’s a sitcom...and Morticia ends up in several of those as well...and being a very weird person who doesn’t really understand how the “““normal”““ world works doesn’t make him *useless*.

And a lot of the scenes in the 60s show of him doing things “badly” seem to actually be on purpose...not all of them, sometimes he just fucks up (like with the bola, though that seems to be because he was distracted talking more than anything), but when he does things like hitting golf balls into quicksand or knocking a bowling pin back upright with the ball (the latter of which is pretty much impossible, so is quite an achievement if it is deliberate) his and Morticia’s reactions often suggest that that’s exactly what he was trying to do and that they consider it “more advanced” than the usual ways of winning these games?

Is it because of this?

Because that’s him in some pretty terrible circumstances and also...if you see a depressed person and think “this guy’s just useless and can’t do anything”...well, let’s just say you’re not endearing yourself to me.

He’s useless at driving, I’ll give you that. At least in the 60s show, the films version seems to at least know how to drive (he is 6 years older in the films, he could have learned in that time I guess...not that they’re one continuity, obviously, but if they were...)

But also the “Connecticut Clark” meme is specifically about a character with no special powers who’s totally normal and boring, with a powerful supernatural being for a wife... look, I get it, Morticia’s more obviously supernatural at first glance, but...Gomez is AN ADDAMS.

His mother’s a witch, his ancestors include several pirates and the man who burned down the library of Alexandria, he’s immune (or at least has very high resistance) to most poisons, totally unharmed by being hit on the head with a wrecking ball, unharmed by sticking his head into boiling oil, has shrugged off fire and electrocution, and he demonstrates various random supernatural/impossible abilities like pulling lit cigars out of his pockets or shaking some diamonds around in his hand and calculating their value precisely...he might not *cast spells* but he is just as supernatural as Morticia in many ways.

As for “out of his league”...I mean, Gomez in the 60s show, in the flashbacks to before he meets Morticia, is...clearly concerned that Morticia will be put off by him being...Addams-ish, to the point of hiding his interest in blowing up trains until she suggests it and worrying that she’ll think Thing is “peculiar”...and, yeah, he’s a dork, and he’s much less confident than he later becomes, and he’s ill, and he kind of comes across like a sad wet cat, and I could see him worrying that he might not really have much of a chance with Morticia at first (though he kind of has bigger problems what with him being engaged to her sister)...

But even that specific version of Gomez...had still canonically had previous relationships (clearly they didn’t work out, I assume at least one person was scared off by Addams-ish-ness, and it’s entirely possible that some of those people were only after his money even if he didn’t realise that) and takes pride in having had several women interested in him when he was younger...

Like, most versions of Gomez are not conventionally attractive, but...I don’t think any version of him is particularly bothered by that or...sees himself as ugly or thinks people won’t like him for it? Even in the flashback two-parter I don’t think how he looks is something he’s worried about at all...in fact I’d go so far as to say most versions of Gomez seem to consider themselves to be attractive even if the majority of people wouldn’t necessarily agree.

I don’t know, I just sort of feel like...Tumblr clearly loves “sad pathetic useless men who can’t do anything”, but it’s one thing when it’s simply...giving some appreciation to characters who ARE like that, but it can feel almost insulting to just stick it onto a character who ISN’T actually like that? (Especially when it feels like the reasoning behind it is that the character shows signs of depression, or neurodivergence, or just isn’t conventionally attractive?)

(I’ve seen far worse in other fandoms...I’ve seen that “pathetic wet paper bag men who have never had a good day in their life and would cry at an insult from a child” post tagged with the name of a character who’s canonically a smug, gleefully evil, arrogant, bloodthirsty bastard who’s never been shown to so much as doubt himself, has never canonically been shown crying or even being particularly sad, either partially or completely succeeds in his plans in all but his very last appearance, and has “easily and calmly shrugs off/adapts to things going wrong and isn’t deterred by any setbacks” as imo a pretty important character trait...and is also clearly having a *very* good time in most of his scenes, maniacal laughter, bad puns, and all...whereas Addams fan content tends to be very in-character for the most part without as much really jarring “did we watch the same thing?” fanon, but I feel like...the associations that people who aren’t quite as involved in the fandom have with the characters aren’t always quite so accurate?)

i'm the prev anon who sent the ask about ed + woobification and just wanted to say thank you for such a detailed reply. this might be long again lol so please don't feel obligated to reply if you don't want to but i just wanted to say, def agree that a lot of the handwavyness regarding ed comes from the fact he's barely even started his character arc; deciding what to do with him is difficult and it's simply more comfortable to ignore some or all of his flaws. it also helps that izzy is intensely unlikable to a large amount of people in the fandom for various reasons that are mostly imagined, meaning that he is sometimes relegated to a badminton like character that it is fine to do violence to, so ed's crimes against him don't particularly matter to them. which, again, i think falls into that category of genre bleed that you referenced in your reply. the anachronisms in the show in terms of societal commentary and allegory sometimes have a tendency to blur together and can be confusing for individuals who have no historical context for the time period, but imo i feel like at this point a lot of fans are patently refusing to acknowledge just how low izzy's rung on the ladder of western society would have been at that time. and assigning izzy the role of colonizer or whatever it is they're calling him now in turn leads to a distorted version of ed and a misunderstanding of his character. stede is my favorite fucked up little guy out of all the fucked up little guys in the show which is why i'm usually searching for and attempting to read ed/stede fic + successfully reading steddyhands fic and enjoying blackhands on the side, and hard, hard agree that blackhands and steddyhands shippers usually understand ed the best and that is because they are able to understand izzy accurately and usually sympathize with him to some degree. izzy is someone important in ed's life who ed chooses to have in his life, and equating him to the level of ed's father or badminton is going to lead to a severe misunderstanding of ed himself, and imo i believe the same can be said for stede; treating stede as a victim of izzy is hilarious to me when stede hardly ever even acknowledges him. which i'm sure is something you're aware of esp if you main blackhands, but i've really realized in the last two months just how connected bad takes about these characters are to misunderstanding izzy and his purpose within the narrative as well as being unable to comprehend a plethora of other aspects of his character.

Our very own Helen of Troy, starting wars over possession of his character, except one side wants him just so they can make sure he's dead. your endverse cas post… your courage. when i got on spn tumblr and endverse cas was everyone’s favorite scruffy guy i was like Shocked cuz i haven’t read DTA and i Only knew him as sexually exploitative guru cas. i was like hello

so i actually don't think this can be laid at seperis' door. it was just the same in 2013. if anything, dta is actually better about this than most endverse cas fics because dta cas manages to at least be very weird. like he's not fanon endverse cas, and he's also actually deviated so far from the canon that i would say it's reasonable to think of him as more... inspired by endverse cas (and canon cas as well) than actually slotting into the end as an episode. none of this is a knock against dta by the way. i have some problems with the fic but i am NOT immune to dta cas, i think he's wonderful and a pretty fresh take on a stale topic. actually, the singular fic that has the most interestingly unpleasant endverse cas i have ever read is also extremely reimagined, and this works to its benefit. you will find no criticism of explicit reimaginings here. i think mainstream fanon is much worse about flattening and woobifying endverse cas than dta, which just changes him in interesting ways. like, most endverse cas fics, long before dta existed... ok i think there are several factors that contribute to his woobification.

the first and most important is... well, fans frequently shave the rough edges off their male faves in terms of misogyny. this happens to like, every man. certainly dean, sam, and cas all get this treatment, but so do like. most male characters in most fandoms. this is partly because for majority-women transformative fans, casual sexism makes lots of (even most) male characters difficult to like on a visceral level, and it's easier to just ignore it than find someone else to attach to. it's also partly because the victims of that casual sexism are usually totally dehumanized by the narrative. like, they exists as props for an episode, or a scene, or a single joke, and the show tells us not to care about them. like, in free to be you and me, in the episode, cas looking deeply into chastity's eyes and saying that thing about her father is meant to be funny. the punchline of the joke is that cas is dumb and doesn't know how to act around women. we are not encouraged to empathize with chastity: the music stings make this scene comic and silly, the reaction shots are all of dean being flabbergasted by cas' ridiculousness, we see the consequences which are experienced by dean and cas, we have no idea what happens to chastity. the whole thing is tied up with an adorable bonding moment in the alley behind the brothel. it's all played as harmless silliness, and, crucially, we are only supposed to pay attention to our protagonists. chastity is a prop, we never even learn her real name. nothing about the shape of the narrative around her invites our empathy. so you could be forgiven for never ever once in a million years considering that if a strange man who none of the employees had ever seen before walked into a brothel and started listing intimate personal details about one of the employees, he is going to appear to be a dangerous stalker. this is of course a misunderstanding, cas is innocent here. but it never gets cleared up. is chastity scared after that? does she triple check her deadbolt every night? does she end up so paranoid that she moves apartments, to a worse place with mold on the walls and a rodent infestation? we don't ask these questions because the narrative tells us not to care, partly because of sexism and partly because supernatural has the worst case of protagonist syndrome i've ever seen. basically we don't see the consequences of our main characters' casual misogyny, so it's easier to ignore.

the second thing is that 5x04 is so explicit in painting endverse dean as Bad and endverse cas as a victim. like it's all about dean's guilt: he sees the state cas is in in the endverse and blames himself, and the narrative conspires to have him blame himself. he sees the cruel, vicious thing he himself becomes in the endverse and hates himself, and the narrative conspires to make him hate himself. this is often taken to extremes in fandom, where endverse dean is painted as directly victimizing endverse cas, when that doesn't seem to actually be the case in the episode, that's just dean's control and self-blame issues talking. he blames himself for cas' unhappiness because it was his obligation to prevent it and allowing it to happen is shirking his duties, not because he literally caused it. but because the narrative frame wants us to see cas as Victimized, we are only encouraged to see how he hurts himself, not other people.

the third thing is that endverse cas really does make a compelling sadboi! like, he is so aggressively queercoded, and he's so sad, and there's this insane implication that dean is cheating on him/has cheated on him, and he has all these hammy, tropey markers of someone whose life is ruined. like he is very compellingly tragic! and people see that and they hone in on the tragedy and they make him a woobie and ignore his less likable aspects. and also he's just begging to be categorized under the drug-addicted sad gay slut trope, unfortunately. and like. because people see him this way, as tragic and darling and pathetic, they tend to not pay attention to the harm he might cause other people.

hey yall! I officially hit 750 followers (a few days ago, I blew past the benchmark without even realizing!), which is... insane. I truly can’t believe that so many people over the last year have enjoyed my presence in this fandom enough to continue to follow my work. you guys are so great and I love you all so much, so I decided to put together a gift for you!

this is a list of my favorite geraskier fics from the fandom, which I have been putting together over the last year or so. a few of these are big in the fandom, but a lot of them are smaller pieces that I feel deserve more attention! It's torment, being forced to preform the song over and over again and have his heart broken anew. But who is this Lady Greensleeves the people say Jaskier is so maddeningly, heartbrokenly in love with? At the baron's wedding party, Geralt is determined to find out.

This is one of my personal faves - there’s just something about Jaskier’s feelings being put on blast while Geralt remains totally oblivious that I think is so very them. And the resolution at the end is delightful.

It was soooo hard to pick only one fic by George, but this one is so soft and sweet and yearning I just had to go with it. This is really just about Geralt finally hitting a breaking point and saying enough is enough.

“Well, then. I’m a ghost.” Jaskier spread his arms grandly. Geralt held his gaze for a moment, then dropped his head and laughed. Jaskier put his hands on his hips. “Do fill me in on what’s so funny.” It wasn’t funny. It was just so - ridiculous, the things Geralt’s fucked up brain would invent. This had to be the last nail in the sanity coffin, it just had to be.

Or: Jaskier is a ghost, and Geralt is a mess.

Jaskier dies and comes back as a ghost to haunt Geralt into taking care of himself. Geralt does not handle this gracefully. This fic is so sad and heartbreaking, but the ending is so sweet.

Geralt wakes up warm, peaceful, and utterly content, which is how he knows that something is severely wrong.

Sigh. This fic. This is a time travel fic - Geralt ends up in the future living with Jaskier on the coast, just after the mountain. It’s slow and beautiful and extremely bittersweet, all about how we choose to love people despite how much it can hurt us.

Later, Geralt learned that the play was four hours long. Four hours long. It didn’t feel like it. Most of it passed by in a fever dream of ominous music, dance-fighting and dryads in gossamer leaves, swinging from hoops attached to the ceiling. Yennefer made an appearance, played by Priscilla in a glittering negligee. She sang a song to Geralt about putting him “Under Her Spell”, and they had a sensual dance number which was made a little strange by a sickened Jaskier (played by Jaskier) coughing loudly in the background.

Jaskier basically writes Geralt a love letter in the form of a four hour long play. Geralt is an idiot about it.

Multi-Chapter Fics

Of all terrible and ridiculous things that have threatened Geralt’s safety, Jaskier’d never thought that loving him might be what will get him killed.

I honestly can’t count the number of times I’ve read this fic. The monster is so interesting, and the mythos of it fits seamlessly into the world of the Witcher in my mind. Jaskier being so afraid that his feelings are going to put Geralt at risk, clearly unable to see that Geralt is going through the exact same thing. I think about the scene with them looking at each other almost daily. 

A Pair of Gloves, the Scent of Roses | M | 24,134 | WARNING: Graphic Depictions of Violence

In the bustling days before the Midsummer festival, Geralt is sent into the countryside to deal with a monster - with Jaskier once again by his side. But the bard has not forgiven him, and while he's not hiding his contempt for the Witcher, he is recalcitrant about revealing his true motives for joining him. As the hunt turns into a desperate mission to save an innocent man and the monster is not what is seems to be, Geralt learns a few new things about his old friend and decides to finally attempt to mend the rift between them...

This is one of my favorite’s in the fandom - it feels so believable, the world is so rich and the oc’s are convincing and charming. Geralt and Jaskier feel so honest here, stumbling around each other but still drawn together. Beautiful beautiful beautiful

Bearing the will of the flower | NR | 11,449 

The way Jaskier sees it, his hobby of following a witcher around was always pretty likely to get him killed.

The fact that it's happening now because the witcher in question doesn't love him, he thinks as he coughs up crumpled flowers, hardly makes a difference.

My favorite hanahaki fic in the fandom. I’m such a sucker for these, and these two idiots being so incapable of talking about their feelings really makes them prime candidates.

I brought a dead princess back to life through the power of song is the kind of thing that would have got an eyebrow raise even from the stone-faced Geralt of Rivia, so it's a good thing he and Geralt will probably never see each other again.

(or: the one where Jaskier channels magic through his songs, and it almost never goes as expected.)

This is a Jaskier and Renfri centric fic, which wasn’t something I knew I wanted until I read this. Jaskier is a bard which in this AU comes with magical powers, but it feels so well integrated into the universe that I wish it was just... how the Witcher is. Renfri is so good here, and even though Jaskier and Geralt barely even interact you can feel the tension and love between them. Cannot recommend highly enough.

As Geralt struggles to untangle the ugly web of history that has lead to the increasingly complicated curse, he finds himself spending more and more time with the strange young viscount and wondering just what he might have been before the curse, and who he might be after. But things are not always as they seem, and as the curse tightens its grip on Jaskier, Geralt is forced to face the fear of failing yet another person whose choices were stolen from them.

This is a fic that haunts me. It’s very scary in parts, and mind the tags - there are some very heavy themes here. But it’s beautiful and touching, and Jaskier feels very true to himself even though his origin is so different.

Geralt and Jaskier fake marriage proposals to get free deserts and shit but it goes tits up when Vesemir catches them in the act. Not knowing how to fess up, they go along with it for a while, which is hell because they’re both pining like mad. As I said, I don’t love modern au’s, but it’s merry so of course this one had to end up on my list.

hi! i read your beautiful fic after nickelodeonhottub recommended it over on her blog, and just can't stop thinking about how well you managed to write/develop dream and george's characterization. she mentioned that you used astrology to kind of influence your writing, and i wanted to ask your opinion about dream and/or george's charts...i'm fascinated with the way you described them and would love if you could explain some of your thought process about their personalities/charts

Hi, anon, thank you for the sweet message! This is a fantastic question to be asked, especially if you enjoy talking about astrology and Dream and George as much as I do — but I fear you didn't know that I am neurotic as hell and am going to respond with a full-on essay. So, uh, sorry for that. 

Preemptive warning that this post is my own personal thoughts, heavy on the speculation (and while I do believe in my takes, I’m not saying you have to), and some dashes of truthing. Here goes, under the cut.

Before getting into the astrology part of it all, I need to put this out there, first and foremost: a lot of my characterization in this fic had to do with the fact that I had consumed all public information about these two beforehand. If you like Dream and George and follow them and went back in the time machine of their history from 2019 onwards (and listened close enough to stories they tell in recent years about how they were before that), I feel like it’s easy to come to personal conclusions off of watching them, seeing how they act (both individually and together, and also with their friends compared to one another), and also how much they have changed (once again, individually and together). My friends aren’t into astrology and we discuss them all the time; they don’t need astrology to ‘get it’ or read between the (very obvious) lines.

But, having knowledge of astrology and birth charts and synastry does make it easy to fill in the gaps, to understand them on a deeper level, beyond what they give to fans. I love learning about people, especially through their charts, so naturally I took several looks.

In terms of characterization, Dream is straightforward for me. I pay close attention to everything he says and does, so all the details that he offers up whilst talking about himself and his life, even the way he lies. That man loves to talk. It makes understanding him easier, even though he hides parts (which he is fully entitled to). Seeing how much he’s evolved as a person in only a year is really fascinating; the ways in which he handles controversies, criticism, his fanbase, his haters, his career, how he speaks about his struggles (then and now), how he talks about subjects like politics or internalized homophobia, all of his pastebin posts and the countless podcasts, how he talks about school, how he’s spoken about his family and friends. He’s interesting, and pretty open. 

The stuff he’s not open about, or that he evades — well, that’s where astrology would come into play, to help figuring things out. I literally cannot go into every single detail in his chart, I would be here forever, but quick notes: Leo sun, Leo mercury, Aquarius rising (the self, communication, how one comes across to others): so, he’s passionate as hell (once again, easy to see for anyone with eyes and ears), bit of a god complex whilst still deeply insecure and desiring of external validation. Virgo moon and venus (emotions, love): perceptive, loyal, loves to overthink, constantly aiming to be the best possible version of themselves, pushing through the tough shit to get things done. Scorpio mars (energy, sensuality): an all-consuming lover, obsessive, intense, emotional, wants to know every fucking thing about the people around them, especially their love interest. Possessive, too. 

Characterizing George is tougher, because he’s more private than Dream. It’s why people often get him wrong, or misunderstand him and his intentions — and, well, I know not everyone aims for pseudo-realism when writing RPF, but I kind of do. I like reading much-too-realistic fic; it’s my favourite. George might not like to give up personal information, at least not in the public sphere, and he’s a bit harder to understand. He prefers it that way, which I respect. A bit cryptic, isn’t he? A bit of a chaos king. A menace. 

But, I see through him. Sorry, buddy. Love you, but your chart is such a tattle-tale. Also, the fact that every single friend that talks about George uses the word ‘kind’ and ‘easy-going’ to describe him when he’s such an instigator and sarcastic bastard (/pos) on stream is pretty fucking funny. He cares a lot, about all of his loved ones — but with Dream, he’s on an entirely different level.

Scorpio sun and mercury: he’s intense, very emotional, but he tries to hide it. He doesn’t want just anyone to know about his deepest, darkest feelings and thoughts — he needs to really trust that a person won’t hurt him before he lets them in, fully. A lot of this is probably why he’s so private, too, but why all his friends still know (parts of) his true self — he lets them in, at least as much as he can. Cancer moon: he is a sweetheart. An angel. A bit of a manipulative fuck (lmfao, and this goes for the Scorpio aspects as well), but that’s not a bad thing! He’s very shameless and obvious about it at least. Libra venus: he gets a lot of friendly and romantic attention, as he should, and he loves it. Thrives in it. Virgo mars: uh, how do I say this lightly? Kind of a freak. Kind of wants to know everything about their lover to the point that they will perfect whatever it is they’re doing. (Every single person I’ve spoken to that has a Virgo mars and every astrologer that I follow that talks about this placement says one thing: they are freaky. In terms of uh. Y’know. Stuff.)

Honestly, with his chart in mind, it’s easy to see the parts of George that slip through the cracks, and also the part that he plays off as jokes but actually means deep-down.

Together, Dream and George share a lot of traits. Deep-rooted loyalty to those that have earned it, obsessive and possessive, intense and passionate, the desire to know every part of one another, mutual jealousy. A lot of caring, between them both, a lot of kindness between them (and for others). An understanding of one another that people might not get, but I think for them, they enjoy those parts of each other? Like, the jealousy, the obsession, the possessiveness... I think they can recognize these things in each other and appreciate them, see the value in them, rather than believe it is bad for their relationship (whatever their relationship may be). They know parts of each other others don’t. And also: I think they can see through each other pretty easily. The things that they hide, the stuff that they might repress, the stuff that they might not find easy to say directly, et cetera. That’s basically why I wrote this entire fic, to be honest.

I didn’t even get into the fact that they have Mars-Venus conjunct (what the hell, why is it like that), the Lilith-Sun aspect whatever the fuck that is (it’s a lot, just Google it), the specific house overlays, the Plutonian extremities, the shared Scorpio and Virgo planets in their charts. These bitches are obsessed with each other on another level, and that’s especially George (though Dream a lot too, but he’s more outright about it). Dream is not a Scorpio, so he doesn’t try to hide it the way George does, but I mean... George is pretty obvious, though he doesn’t intend to be. Listen to the man in any stream. He’s obsessed with Dream, jfc. He cannot shut up about him; he relates everything back to the man (his height, the colour green, his name(s), even his star sign, anything Dream has said or mentioned ever). He wants Dream’s approval for everything he does, to know everything he does, to know every part of Dream (and I bet this is why it drives him so fucking crazy not knowing what he looks like, yet). He just... deeply loves Dream lol, and that is evident. Especially if you have the context of his chart and their synastry, it’s easy to understand why. 

I mean, they are best friends. But there’s a lot of potential for more in their charts. We have been watching their story unfold for months, years for others, so we know better than anyone that these two are flirty as hell and have romantic undertones and overtones and every-tone-ever in all aspects of their ~friendship~, so we can see they’re blurring the lines. Do they have limits? Boundaries? No. Do they want them? Also no. Kind of crazy. 

This is also why I wrote this fic this way. They’re constantly pushing boundaries with each other, and their sexual tension is otherworldly, so I wanted to explore a world where they continue to push and push and push until they finally give up. Also, it was fun to write it at this specific point in time, where I find they seem to be very comfortable with their relationship (once again, whatever it is. Only they know.).

Final comments... uh, basically I wrote them that way because I observed them closely and then used astrology to figure out the not-so-obvious parts. Obviously my word is not God, I could be wrong on a lot of it, but astrology doesn’t lie if you believe in it (which I do, and have since I started studying it 2016). Also, Dream is the craziest bitch in existence for giving fans his full birth chart with time. I love him for it. The end.

What are your opinions on Draco x Harry

I mean, as you can probably guess, I’m not a fan.

Pretty much name your ship of the day and you can guess, “Oh, I bet Muffin hates that one too.” And you’d be right.

Also, to the Harry/Draco fan undoubtedly reading this post and feeling their ulcer starting to boil. Hello, welcome, please sit down and feel free to join the club of people I have grievously offended. So far including 1 Bellamort fan, 1 Ronmione fan, 1 Snape Stan.

Right, what are my thoughts on Draco/Harry...

Well, sort of like Dramione, it’s a ship with characters fandom has completely made up.

What do I mean?

Well, if we remember, in the books Harry is one scary dude. Especially when it comes to Draco.

Earlier books, Draco is just Harry’s schoolboy rival. And sure, Harry legitimately thinks Draco, a twelve-year-old, is petrifying the castle but Harry’s also very stupid. They get into spats now and then, Draco is the world’s largest brat, and they just get into various hijinks in their rivalry.

Half Blood Prince... Harry gets fucking scary. True, while he didn’t know what the spell he pointed at Draco did, his growing obsession throughout the book and the actions he took pointed towards... Well, had he not been caught or there was no danger of being caught, I’m sure he would have loved to murder Draco right then and there.

That Harry later saves Draco’s life in the next book never really felt that much about Draco. It was more that Harry likes to think of himself as a hero. I could have just as easily seen him leaving Draco Malfoy to burn alive.

So, what does Draco/Harry usually do about this? Well, they go one of two routes.

One, Harry’s obsession with and near murder of Draco Malfoy is played off as Harry’s secret attraction to Draco. See, he likes him, look how much attention he always pays to him!

Never mind that, had Draco been a female character, you’d have the fandom raging that Harry’s an abusive stalker. (Well, maybe, this fandom seems convinced Harry’s a cinnamon roll and too pure for this world).

Usually in this route Harry and Draco have one seriously messed up relationship, where they often near murder each other all the time, and it somehow turns into a relationship. That’s really just them murdering each other. What do I mean?

Well, let’s take one unnamed fic for an example.

The story is an AU where Harry and Draco get into fist fights nearly every night. And by fist fights I mean that Harry beats the ever loving shit out of Draco and Draco so loathes himself that he takes it. They do this for years, they hospitalize each other several times, Snape and McGonagall finally put their feet down and tell them to stop beating each other up in the hallway.

Then being around 15-16, Draco and Harry switch to molesting and raping each other instead. They have one seriously fucked up sexual relationship which, given the roughness, is still a lot like beating each other up within an inch of their lives.

Unfortunately, as the war goes on and after they graduate, Draco gets severe brain damage. This means no sex for Harry. Harry is very angsty about this and eventually breaks, he starts raping brain damaged Draco, only he tells himself it’s not rape because Draco seems to be responding. Maybe? Ginny tells Harry he is one messed up dude, Harry lives happily ever after raping brain damaged Draco Malfoy.

This fic has dozens of pieces of fan art and is beloved. There are many other fics that, while not quite this, involve a similar amount of dubious consent, rape, and more.

Behold, Draco/Harry at its core, a Nabokov worthy tale that no one wants to admit is a Nabokov worthy tale. Oh, they’ll call it angsty, but won’t admit just how messed up it is.

The other route is to pretend Harry’s not a fucked up dude and Draco’s not a whiny racist.

Harry will be made an inherently noble character who just... gets a little mad sometimes. But he’s an inherently good person who attracts the interest of Draco because of this nobility. Draco, in turn, wants to be a good person and doesn’t really believe the racism deep down, he just can’t get out.

This is... easier to read than the other versions, but we’re in a very strange AU where none of the characters match up to the original story. Draco and Harry are made much more palatable, and the story itself is usually diabetic levels of fluff. You need an insulin pump after all the cuddling you read through, my god. 

And that’s usually the trouble, the stories are usually about nothing. Draco and Harry have misunderstandings, they get together, they cuddle, the end.

Though that said, on my scale of readability, Draco/Harry is more tolerable to me than Draco/Hermione. On my giant post of Harry Potter fic recs, there is not one Draco/Hermione, there is... might only be one Draco/Harry.

an introductory rec list (that no one asked for) to some of my favorite ships: drarry [4/10]

First fic I read for the pairing: Obsession by yesbocchan [2k,T] Harry thinks Malfoy is up to something evil. Until he finds out maybe he's not the only one with an obsession. [just a cute little eighth year fic i saw on tumblr back when i was first getting into fandom stuff (and back into harry potter in general) when i was near the end of high school. it’s cute, it’s sweet, and i was curious about drarry as a concept so]

Fic that really sold me on the pairing: Stealing Sweaters by DorthyAnn [12k,T] It's their eighth and final year and over the course of several months, Harry and Draco have managed to become close friends. Their friends are entirely certain that they ought to be much, much more. So they just decide to... help things along. [listen, everything that DorthyAnn writes is phenomenal, so how could i not fall in love with this ship after this?]

Absolute favorite fic(s) for the pairing: Animus Nexus by MystyVander [96k,T] It's Eighth Year at Hogwarts and it seems Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy hate each other more than ever before. Everybody is sick of it. Somebody was tired of the two enough to curse them, binding them together. What at first appears to be a death sentence to both Harry and Draco turns out to be the thing the both of them needed the most. [it’s enemies to friends to lovers coupled with accidental bonding coupled with discussions of magical theory coupled with wizarding traditions with a few misunderstandings and some angst all set in eighth year and that’s basically the perfect combination for me.] Twist of Fate by Oakstone730 [302k,T] Draco asks Harry to help him beat the Imperius curse during 4th year. The lessons turn into more than either expected. A story of redemption and forgiveness. Pairings: HP/DM (Slash) Timeframe: 1994-2002 Goblet to 4 yrs post-DH EWE Rating T for language, high angst, content. [this fic has lived rent-free in my head for three years and it fucking slaps. there’s angst and fluff and so many bittersweet moments and it’s both canon compliant and completely canon divergent and i am obsessed with it. 40000/10]

Most recent fic I’ve read for the pairing: love me now (touch me now) by swisstae [3k,G] Harry's never had a bath. Draco plans on changing that. OR in which Harry gets his hair washed and Loves It (and Draco. He loves Draco too.) [this fic is adorable and sweet and i enjoyed it immensely.]

Favorite AU(s) I’ve read for the pairing: Alternate Sorting AU (Slytherin!Harry): Malfoy Flavor by Vorabiza [199k,E] Harry’s ready to banish the Golden Boy image and take charge of his life. Unfortunately for him, or fortunately, there are surprises in store for him. [Slytherin!Harry but it’s not an entire canon rewrite like most of the alternate sorting fics i love so much, so that’s fun. also severitus and just the right amount of soul crushingly painful angst. oh and it has a delightfully fluffy little sequel. ] Alternate Sorting AU 2: Electric Boogaloo (Ravenclaw!Draco): Chaos Theory by Tessa Crowley [102k,E] Chaos: when the present determines the future, but the approximate present does not approximately determine the future. One gene varies, one neuron fires, one butterfly flaps its wings, and Draco Malfoy's life is completely different. Draco has always found a certain comfort in chaos. Perhaps he shouldn't. (warnings for: major character death, graphic depictions of violence, psychological torture, implied/referenced non-con) [as my notes on my bookmark said: GOD DAMNNNNN. I LOVE THIS FIC. I CRIED SO MUCH AND ALSO THERE WAS LAUGHTER AND JUST GOD DAMN. ONE OF MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITES. so that about sums it up.] Time Travel AU: Annus Mirabilis by Ren [39k,E] Harry and Malfoy are trapped at Hogwarts around the time the school was founded. Stuck with a different way of doing magic, with no chocolate, and with each other, they have to find a way to work together if they want a chance to go home. [i almost never fuck with time travel aus but… this one slaps. also? hogwarts founders era?? hell yeah. also also? their relationship progresses in a way that feels so natural and the tension is so palpable and the writing is excellent.]

Favorite Series for the pairing: Leo Inter Serpentes by Aeternum [746k,E,6 Works] Just one conversation between two eleven year old boys goes slightly differently, and the world changes. Just how much will be different with Harry being sorted into Slytherin, and how much will stay the same? [Slytherin!Harry? Harry, Draco, Hermione friendship? Severitus? All in a complete series re-write that’s currently six completed works deep? What more could you possibly need?]

Longest fic I’ve read for the pairing: I Do What I Want by XxTheDarkLordxX [509k,E] They say you shouldn't touch what isn't yours... Too bad no one told Harry that. A simple mistake that Harry made in his first year at Hogwarts is coming back to bite him in the arse. The war is over but the threat to his life is just beginning. This story begins with a simple apology that changes Harry’s life. It starts a domino effect that leads to unbelievable connections, undying love, unique past lives, unknown villains and an unstoppable family. Follow Harry and his friends on an epic adventure filled with twists, bumps, comfort, enemies, a new life and a lot of love. (warnings for: major character death, some character bashing) [the first (or first few? i forget) chapters are written in first person but they’re an internal monologue and the rest of the fic is not in first person, just so you know. Also, the concept slaps and the fic is cute and i love to see it (and i’ve read it thrice).]

Fic(s) with some of my favorite tropes: Matchmaking: Ron Weasley: Accidental Matchmaker by Phoenix_Waves [2k,T] "There's not a sexual tension out there that the man can't accidentally detect!" George beamed. "And then ask the stupid arse question that's going to light the spark and fan the flames." Lee added matter-of-factly. A fluffy Christmas one shot featuring our favorite older Gryffindors. [god this is excellent: the obliviousness, the mutual pining, the matchmaking, having the older gryffindor kids around and having a good holiday time- it’s all excellent.] Soulmates: Kiss Me Not by DorthyAnn [21k,T] Sometimes a witch or wizard's magical signature is so completely incompatible with another that they repel one another like magnets. On the other hand, if two magical signatures mesh well together, well there are no stronger relationships in all the world. In a sample of a thousand people, the average witch or wizard will be slightly repelled by four or five people and strongly repelled by only one, at the most. The opposite is true for attraction. But Harry Potter can't kiss anyone at all. [this is actually such a fascinating take on the classic soulmates trope. there’s no predestined person for everyone and there’s no magical guarantee of anything, just magic being a little difficult and i adore that. also the writing style is excellent and the characterizations are spot on.] Accidental Bonding + Bed Sharing: Let's Take A Chance On Happiness by endless_grey [21k,E] Harry works with Luna at her magical antique shop, and everything is going pretty well until a mysterious ring makes an appearance. Cue curse-breaker Draco Malfoy and an accidental bond, and suddenly Harry is magically married to his former nemesis. They need to break the bond before Hermione's fundraiser, but Harry doesn't remember "fall in love with the git" being part of the plan. [i discovered this fic while looking for something else, but it’s so good. i love their dynamic and it’s shift as the story progresses and i love both of their friendships with luna just as much. it’s funny and a little angsty and well written and has two of my favorite tropes in it. what more can i say?]

Thanksvember Master Post

Day 1 - Like Coming Home - It has a super rare “wholesome plot twist”! Without spoiling anything too huge, I really like that @julesherondalex took the time to talk about how important it is to take care of yourself first. You can’t love someone else properly, the way they deserve, if you don’t have that same love for yourself. I wasn’t expecting the heartbreaking scene, but the beautiful way in which that topic was was approached neither took away from the story or the joy.

Day 2 - Must Love Dogs - An incredibly fluffy (literally) fic that I loved reading. @rosehallshadowsinger did a really great job weaving Azriel and Elain’s canon personalities into this adorable AU scenario. It is obvious @rosehallshadowsinger took care to create believable personalities for two characters that didn’t get POVs in the books.

Day 3 - Striking Matches -  I have to say that I wasn’t at all attracted to an AU fic about firefighters. I was also not a big Rowaelin fan before that, but I was work procrastinating so I gave it a try. Wellll, 30 parts later, I found myself delighted at the writing and sad it was over. I couldn’t believe how well @shyvioletcat cat was able to entirely re-characterize these two into such a different setting, yet still retaining what made them popular in the books. Aelin was perfect in her role as a snarky schoolteacher irritating the stoic firefighter Rowan. And the descriptions of the kids lining up at the firehouse demonstration and Jake’s adorable prodding was icing on the cake.

Day 4 - Close Quarters -  I really loved the way @lady-therion wrote Nesta in this modern AU. I particularly like how she equates Nesta’s sometimes standoffish attitude as a very relatable personality trait. She has trouble reading people and gauging situations. It’s well written and the dialogue is unique for a plot that is common in ff!

Day 5 - Like A Lonely House - It’s got a colossal I love Lucy level misunderstanding mixed in with a lot of tension and angst. This Nesta that is full of sacrifice and duty and fire is how I imagine the Nesta who feels that she has a stake in the Fae world would be like. @featherymalignancy wove such a captivating new world in Macar, that it felt a lot like being introduced to the 8th court in the ACOTAR world.

Day 6 - Death Dance - There are several takes out there that touch on Nesta in the Ilyrian camps, but I love how @thewayshedreamed interpreted Nesta’s skills on the battlefield as a calculated dance. Nesta has always been a raging storm, but I love how @thewayshedreamed took care to show us a Nesta that channeled that storm into discipline. If SJM never intended to release a Nessian focused book, I would have considered this a satisfying end to their story.

Day 7 - One Night Standards - I love the way @sassyhobbits writes Aelin with her typical extremely sassy exterior, but also made sure to saddle her with a vulnerable side that runs deep. I normally don’t care for slow burns, but I like the pace of her relationship with Rowan here, and that they had to work hard at it. I also like the plot lines that involved their PR stunts and how the public grew to love them as well.

Day 8 - Goose Chasing - Its the most absurd plot of any fanfic I’ve read! The title is not figurative. Its really does involve chasing a goose. @rhysismydaddy did a fantastic job encapsulating the spirit of silly Cassian and grumpy Nesta in a situation they’d likely never find themselves in, yet making it entirely believable. 

Day 9 - Manon Chooses The Worst Babysitter Possible - It’s such a casual and fluffy and hilarious read. It was fun to read about a softer and more delicate Manon. Through this absurd mistake, @sarah-bae-maas did an excellent job really humanizing Manon and postulating a fun in-world domestic scenario. 

Day 10 - My Hunger Knows No Bounds -  @perseusannabeth manages to take a simple concept and weave a sweet narrative. I particularly love how @perseusannabeth incorporated her personal details into it and took the time to share her lovely culture with us.

Day 11 - Knowing me, Knowing you - We never got to actually see Aelin rule Terrasen (well we got a tinyyy bit) in the books. Though this was modern day, @nalgenewhore tells a fun story of what that could have been like.

Day 12 -  Forever (is a long time) - @noodlecatposts takes Elide and Lorcan’s completely polar opposite personalities and spins an interesting (and frankly quite adorable) story. All the rules crack me up. My favorite Lorcan is the one that reminds me of Luke Danes from Gilmore Girls. Currently, he is in the middle of grumpily fixing up her flooded room, so I am sure that my favorite parts are yet to come.

Day 13 - Go Your Own Way - I appreciate @tomtenadia for putting to words a scene that I desperately wanted in ACOWAR or even ACOFAS. A lovely parallel to an equally lovely Fleetwood mac song.

Day 14 - In Which She Makes A Friend - It is no surprise that the fandom wants Nesta to find her place in the Illyrian mountains and even bring about some social change with the female warriors. But the way @bookstantrash got there was such a wonderful and endearing journey. Big fan of the callbacks to how Kaelin was treated and the similarities to a certain Illyrian warrior was when he was younger. We got to see a sweet Nesta, who I’d like to think was attempting to make up for some of her regrets through taking care of Kaelin.

Day 15 - The Ranch - As a huge fan of Sweet Home Alabama, its should be no surprise that I loved this fic by @tacmc . I enjoyed the slow change that we saw in a stubborn Nesta as she opened up to this new way of life and reconnected with her sisters and found a home with Cassian.

Day 16 - Felons - Such a unique interpretation of Nesta and Cassian. I really like the self-sacrificing Nesta angle and @rhysismydaddy did a great job weaving intrigue into the unraveling of what we knew to be a her innocence. I never read The Witness, but this really made me want to.

Day 17 - Of Books and Timber - Cassian offers to build a shelf for Nesta. The way @duskandstarlight goes through the entire range of emotions through Nesta is brilliant. She starts out with cold indifference, but by the end, we get from her a sweet and tender gesture of gratitude. Showing that meeting each other halfway with small gestures is all they ever needed.

Day 18 - You Should Sleep In My Bed More Often - I absolutely loved this quick exchange between Nesta and Cassian after she accidentally injures him. I can’t believe how much I laughed out loud when Cassian said “I need you to protect me closer”. @charincharge​ perfectly captured the teasing childish essence of Cassian and Nesta’s hilarious victim-blaming was so on the nose that I might have thought this was taken right out of ACOSAF.

Day 19 - The Right Swipe - I really enjoyed this take on the inner circle mixed with the super modern online dating plot. I especially love that @redisriding created genuinely realistic characters (body issues, social anxiety etc). Great read!

Day 20 - Goldfish Prompt - What a fun read. I love how frantic and much personality Feyre had here. I love how dedicated to her fish she was, and how that made her super endearing. Cute read from @azrielsiphons

Day 21 - The One With The Snowstorm -  What I really like is that Cassian actually says that he is sorry for his part in Nesta’s exile. I am not bitter about it, but it was an interesting turn. They need to meet halfway here and I rarely see it so well written as @joysbell has done here!

Day 22 - Prompt - A lovely and cute and sweet prompt written by @crowsvalentine​! I love the ramp up of suspense just to get to the hilarious payoff. Its adorable and worth the quick read.

Day 23 - Fix It -  is one by @thewayshedreamed​ that I love in its simplicity. It’s a small little argument Cassian and Nesta get into, but its still compelling. It’s sweet and super endearing the way the two of them are written and the subtle way they work through it. Great read!

Day 24 - I Do Bad Things To You - The mob angle may have been done before, but I don’t think with as much care and regard that @tswaney17​ has been giving it. I how the canon personalities of the characters translate so well into this modern AU. Its very obvious that @tswaney17​ has done her research. I especially love all the details around Elain as a surgeon. The story is compelling and well written and every chapter has me wanting more.

Day 25 - Love Her Like She should Be Loved - This is an excellent fic that I really loved. @julemmaes did such a great job translating some of the canon tension from ACOFAS into a modern world. It’s ripe with emotion, drama and quite a bit of heart. I love how earnestly Cassian comes to Nesta’s defense even in the face of going against his entire family. I like the reference to some very real psychological struggles. I think a lot of people can relate to it.

Day 26 - Literally In Love - I really enjoy the subtle mystery that follows this entire journey. I enjoy that @julesherondalex keeps us guessing, while simultaneously weaving a sweet and tender story about two shy teachers and just a slew of mishaps worthy of a Shakespearian drama.

Day 27 - The Shadow Bond - I love Azriel, and this is such a wonderful fic by @radientwings​ focusing on how his shadows might work. His shadows are the one thing that I am most curious about him in the series, so it was lovely to read such a well written interpretation of them.

Day 28 - Exes and Oh’s - Just a shout out to @highqueenofelfhame​ for this lovely story about rekindling past love. I like that even though the plot was uncomplicated, the emotions were not. I love that Aelin didn’t have a perfect reason for what she did, but sometimes that is just how things are. This is a story about taking a second chance, whether it’s deserved or not.

Day 29 - Fever - I really love this fic called Fever. I enjoyed how @lady-therion​ portrayed Nesta. She hit the entire gammut of characteristics (snarky, worried, vulnerable, caring, short-tempered, flirty, you name it!) but it really worked here. I found this nurse Nesta to be endearing and relatable and the dynamic between her and Cassian was very sweet. Just go read the damned thing.

Day 30 - Baby Steps - I really really love this fic. @runesandfaes did such a great job in just so few words to show a really sweet moment between Chaol, Yrene and their daughter learning to walk. I love the parallel back to when Chaol was learning to walk and the cameo of the golden couch. So sweet.

!!! An excuse to recommend my favorite fics and authors? Don’t mind if I do! Here’s a top fourteen list of some great fics and a top nine list of my favorite authors, in no particular order! Because I had way too many. (Plus I’m bound to forget a million good ones, so take these with a grain of salt!)

1. chivalry is dead by Uncrowned_King! There really wasn’t another option. After Roman disappears into the Imagination, the other Sides come to look for him, and find several Romans fighting for ownership of the land. My all-time favorite Roman angst, with some beautifully written worldbuilding and my favorite OCs ever and a plot twist that sent me reeling. With some cute DLAMP, too! What’s not to love?

2. Breathe Out by Odaigahara! This is darker than I usually read but so, so worth it! Set pre-canon, Virgil and Janus team up against the other dark sides and find their feelings go beyond platonic after a relationship of convenience becomes something more. It’s a WIP and I don’t know where it’s going yet, but I’m really intrigued and the writing is incredible!

3. The Black Hole Group Chat by Greenninjagal! Definitely my favorite comfort fic. After Logan accidentally joins a group chat and is forced into sticking around, he finds himself making his first friends--but past feelings and present conflicts threaten to tear apart the first place they’ve ever felt comfortable. So good, so funny, makes the most of the texting medium, and I always cry at the end.

4. Monsters of the Subconscious by Quarantinevibes! Ohh, everything by this author is fantastic which goes for all of them. After PoF, Janus visits the Imagination to apologize. Instead, him and Roman are sucked into the Subconscious, a wild land full of mysterious dangers. They must team up to escape, and come to terms with their feelings for each other. Some wonderfully soft Roceit, hilarious comedy and incredible action, and great emotional moments!

5. the feelings in my headspace rearranged by mutemelody! Some canon divergence for the soul. Anxiety doesn’t have a name, and after the AA arc, has to make his way through acceptance and love. Canon turns on its head, old friends make a reappearance, and through it all Anxiety has to find his own identity, nameless or not. Gosh, this fic is incredible--the writing is stunning, the plot is amazing, and it’s some of the best Virgil angst I’ve ever read.

6. There’s a Word For That by plumcat! I cannot recommend this fic enough. Roman, a Slytherin, has been pining over arguing with Patton, a Hufflepuff, since the beginning of time. But with the Quidditch match coming up, his two annoying best friends relentlessly teasing him, and Patton himself spending more and more time with Roman, Roman has to figure out what he really wants and who he wants to be. This fic is hilarious and makes me feel feelings and please, please read it.

7. (i’d never) want once from the cherry tree by ace_corvid! Prinxiety! And a Youtuber AU that really takes advantage of the medium! Virgil and Roman are two of the most popular creators on YouTube and their fans have been begging them to do a crossover episode. The collaboration goes surprisingly well, but it’s one thing to explore a relationship, and another to do it when the whole world is watching. So cute, so hilarious, has some amazing art as well, and I just highly recommend it.

8. double down on the paradigms by remrose! Here’s a lovely college AU! Logan is doing his best to pass his classes, and everything is going fine, despite his roommate Virgil’s concerns about his late study nights and compulsive behavior. Then he meets Patton, and every wall Logan’s constructed slowly begins to crumble. To show how much I love this fic, I have not stopped thinking about it, even though it’s the only one on this list I’ve only read once. It stuck with me that much and hey maybe I should reread it, hold on--

9. In a Tizzy by coconutcluster! Cute fluff, so wholesome, much love. After Logan finds out that Roman gets flustered at compliments, he enlists the other Sides to test this theory. But Roman gets upset when he thinks they’re playing a joke on him by being nice. The writing is great and it’s a fantastic pick-me-up on a bad day! Just so full of nice wonderful feelings!

10. Communication Issues by WaeRose! Analogince! The alternative title that I cut out says it all! After Logan and Virgil find Roman crying in his room, they make an effort to spend more time together as a group. But platonic feelings quickly become non-platonic, misunderstandings abound, insecurities rise, and they’ll have to learn how to communicate their feelings if those feelings could ever lead to a relationship. The writing is incredible, the second-person POV is done expertly, and the characterization is top-notch!

11. a heart he couldn’t control by codevassie! Prinxiety that tore me into a million pieces. Roman traded away his true love’s life to save his brother from a witch, but when he actually meets said true love, he begins to regret his choice. Now Virgil is trapped once again with the witch, Roman is on a rescue mission, Patton and Logan are hiding something, and Janus is definitely not who he seems. Once again, this AU hurts me, and the incredible writing makes it a gut-punch! It’s a WIP but I love where it’s going and need to catch up on it but shhh

12. Another Goddamn Hero Story by rosesisupposes! I’m a sucker for a superhero AU and this one is stellar! Logan and Virgil are a hero team, trying to subdue Patton and Roman, the most famous villain duo in the city. But nobody’s exactly who they say, everyone’s not quite sure which side is right, and past wrongs are coming back to draw new blood. It’s endgame LAMP and the romances are built perfectly! Supervillains Royality is amazing, the action is incredible, and the plot twist blew me away!

13. Hurt, and How We Grow Past It by Jinx72! Another comfort fic of mine, by one of my all-time favorite authors! After Deceit visits the Imagination and lights a fire larger than he intended, Roman is left injured while the other Sides try to put the pieces back together. Old grudges come to light, new bonds are forged, and they all fall in love slowly while all simultaneously being extremely insecure. The characterization is incredible, the writing is top-notch, and the DLAMP is heartfelt and wonderful!

14. Eucatastrophe by arealsword! I added this one last-minute because it’s incredible and deserves to be on this list! The writing is incredible, the world-building is top-notch, and the plot manages to be coherent and incredible while throwing me for a loop every other line! It creeped me the heck out, but I’d expect nothing less from the author of Pick a Side. I’m not even gonna summarize this one because that’d spoil the fun, but suffice it to say, Thomas gets kidnapped by faeries and things get interesting very fast.

1. @/sleeplessinstarbucks. You want good losleep content? Here. You want good QPR content? Here. You want good content in general? Here! Lia has amazing hurt/comfort, beautiful writing, and stellar characterization. I binge their writing every time I get bored. If you want your heart to be warmed, this is where to go!

2. @/theeternalspace. Okay, so Acantha is the Royal of Long Fics. Every one of theirs is a winner! They’re an expert at plotting and characterization, and I’ve been sucked into every one of their many AUs. Plus their writing is godly! And did I mention there are so many chapter fics on their Ao3? If you want a bunch of bingeable emotional rollercoasters, head on over here!

3. @/whenisitenoughtrees. Cat...how. How do you do it. See, Cat writes the best one shots. Their writing is incredible and they’ve written some of my all-time favorite short fics! Their characterization is always on point, and their dialogue always lands, and did I mention their writing is just so deliciously readable--you feel like they chose every word carefully to make it pack as much of a punch as possible. If you want some incredible one shots, this is your writer!

4. @/tulipscomeinallsortsofcolors. I mean, I couldn’t not include Violet. LAOFT is still my favorite series of all time and deserves all the attention it’s got! They’re the expert at well-done short fics that serve a longer narrative, giving everything an almost episodic structure. Plus, their fluff is the fluffiest and the best, and their angst hurts me deep within my soul, so they’re double-powerful! If you want standalone fics or a complex, emotional series, check them out!

5. @/impatentpending. Elena, our writing god, our Deity, which all other writers must respect. Every fic of hers is top-tier, from short to long, and she’s unrivaled at plotting and worldbuilding! You’ll get sucked in to every world and story she creates, and she’s an expert on letting the stories linger. I’m still thinking about Powerless and Monster and it’s been almost a year. If you want expertly crafted stories that leave you in emotional pieces, she’s got them.

6. @/ironwoman359. A classic choice here! She’s got it all--incredible one shots,  great characterization, and a big enough master list for basically any ship to be found! She also writes some of the best hurt/comfort in the genre, so if you’re a fan of bad things that lead to good endings, there’s always something to read. If you want a large catalog of fantastic stories, she’s your gal!

7. @/caffeinatedcryptid. You may have seen El’s fantastic art on tumblr, but have you read their incredible stories? If not, you’re missing out! They’ve got several spectacular one shots already written, and each one of them broke me in their own special way. Their writing style is incredible and their characterization is fantastic. If you want longer one shots with well-thought-through plots, head over there!

8. @/astronomical-bagel. Astro, our Lord of Roman Angst, always ready to punch me in the gut with feelings! Act One, Scene Three still hurts me to this day. They’re always ready to turn anything into Roman angst (or any angst, check HDABST) but they’ve got some comfort in there as well! A little bit. Somewhat. Yeah. If you want to be emotionally destroyed, you know who to call.

9. @/green-writes-sanderssides. Green’s fics were some of the first I ever read in this fandom, and they’ve stuck with me to this day! They're an expert at the fluff-angst balance and causing all sorts of Emotions. They’re currently working on an incomplete LAMP fic that just completes me. But I digress. Green is spectacular! They’ve got wonderful canon-verse fics that explore the characters and their relationships expertly. If you want amazing fics with fantastic characterization in-canon, stop by!

End Of The Year Faves

10. Zack Fair (FFVII) gif imagine

I really love this one because it’s like the definition of short and sweet. It’s adorable, warm and I think I got Zack’s characterization pretty well and I often reread it when I need a smile. I just love my boy Zack and how this little thing turned out.

9. Connor (DBH) prompt (”I shouldn’t be in love with you”)

The reason I love this one it’s because I wrote it as one of my favorite things to write: a character study. I tried to express Connor’s struggle as he develops feelings for the reader and how conflicted he would be to have fallen in love with someone, having developed such a human thing as feelings. One of the many reasons why I love Connor is because of his arc in the game, because of how guilty he feels for becoming deviant despite being the very android that hunts them, it just gets to me. I’m just really glad that I could explore that in this prompt and that I managed to show it properly as well as make this more angsty, since my specialty is usually fluff.

8. Yennefer (Witcher) prompt (”I shouldn’t be in love with you” “Are you jealous?” “I’m so scared”)

This is the only Yennefer request I’ve ever gotten (besides one for a dating would include that I had already written), and I had so much fun writing it! Yennefer has appeared in my Witcher writings a lot, but never as a main character and never as a love interest, so that’s why this was so cool! I think she’s a very interesting character, so I really enjoyed getting the chance to explore her personality. I love how it turned out because I think it’s the perfect balance between her being sly and also being loving and showing her feelings for the reader. 

7. Too Nice (John Ambrose McClaren, TATBILB ficlet)

John Ambrose is another character I really like writing for. What can I say? I fell in love with him and it was great to write something for him. This is somewhere between love and almost hate, with a lot of misunderstandings and complex feelings that ultimately lead to a happy fluffy ending. He’s just the sweetest and it was curious to write his reactions to someone who doesn’t always respond well to his kindness, even if because it flusters them.

6. Special (Howl Pendragon, HMC ficlet)

And yet another character I love. It was a bit hard settling on just one version of the character, because I love both the movie and book versions, so I tried to make it a little bit of both... even if this Howl is more suave and charming like in the movie rather than the absolute endearing disaster that book Howl is. Still, I always have fun getting other characters involved with the reader and their love interest, so I loved adding Calcifer and Marko to the mix. As well as the cute interactions Howl and reader have, I love the ending in which he hints at the fact that the reader unlocked something in his heart that he didn’t think was possible.

5. Kind (Jesse Pinkman, Breaking Bad ficlet)

I don’t often get to write about Jesse, so this was awesome! Peekaboo was one of my favorite episodes and it was amazing to get to explore it. While it’s not perfect, I really like how the connection between Jesse and reader turned out, how kind (:D) he is and patient and respectful, and I think I also poured a lot of emotion to the reader with that background.

4. Separated (Zuko, ATLA ficlet)

By this point, it’s obvious that I’m more proud of ficlets (because they’re longer and take more planning and more time and effort) and about characters I love because I think the passion I have for them is more obvious. I wrote this one right when I was watching ATLA because I loved (and still love) Zuko so much. It’s sort of a character study as well (it’s established that I adore writing them) and I’m so glad that I had the idea of getting Iroh involved because he’s awesome. This ficlet just has a lot of pining and repressed emotions that come out in the end and I love it.

3. Weight On His Shoulders (PS4 Peter Parker ficlet)

This one if pretty recent, as I wrote it after beating the game myself. This game is just awesome, and this is my favorite representation of Peter ever. He’s cute, charming, nerdy, loving, kind, a bit awkward and just everything that Peter and Spidey should be (at least for me). I wanted to represent both his personas in this one, and I like the balance I achieved with it as well as the emotions, the pining, the secret identity and in the end the understanding of the reader. The part with Spidey saving reader is great and I’m very happy with how reader is prepared to confront him about it once they learn he’s Spiderman only to change their mind when they see how much it’s weighing on him so they decide to relax with him for a bit.

2. Reunion (Cloud Strife, FFVII ficlet)

I’ve written a lot of things for this fandom this year because I was super inspired after beating the remake with my brother, I loved it (honorable mentions to Heal My Heart and Stars In Your Eyes, two other ficlets that I wrote and I’m very proud of). Cloud has always been one of my favorite characters, and in this one I got to examine a side of him I usually don’t. Not only does this ficlet include Zack Fair (another one of my favorite characters) but it also goes along with an idea I had been thinking about for a long time of a female reader pretending to be a boy to get into SOLDIER and becoming friends with them, but it also shows Cloud as the meeker and shy boy he is in Crisis Core. It was so cool to write about him back then and after once he had joined AVALANCHE. His relationship with the reader was also bittersweet because of their past and it’s just so complex and emotional that I love it, especially their reunion at the end.

1. Soul of a Warrior (Jaskier x Nissa, The Witcher Fanfiction Series). This was a big project, as series always are. I spent several months planning and plotting the story and even more months writing it, and also revising it once it was finished before posting it. I put so much effort, love and time into this series that it absolutely had to be number one. Soul of a Warrior is probably the thing I’m most proud of (that I have written) in 2020. 

As most of you know (my mutuals definitely do, as they have gifted me amazing things with him), Jaskier is probably the character I fangirled the hardest about this year. I wrote many things for him (the ficlet What Would You Do Without Me? deserves another honorable mention because it’s probably my favorite thing I’ve written this year along with the series) and working on each of them has brought me so much serotonin. Jaskier is just such an amazing character, loving and compassionate but cheeky and selfish while at the same time being charming, optimistic, bubbly, extroverted and a huge flirt. So many layers!

But back to the series... Soul of a Warrior had one of the best faceclaims I’ve found, the sweetest friendship between my OC Nissa and Geralt and the slowest of burns romances with Jaskier. Him and Nissa are very similar in some aspects, so much so that they’re both too blind to realize the other’s feelings (idiots to lovers, am I right?) but they care so much about one another. The three of them were strangers, but they become family (found family, another one for the fandom bingo!) and I’m the proudest of how real and organic their relationship feels. Not to mention that their dynamic was super fun to write because Geralt is the only one that knows they’re in love and is so fed up and exasperated with their obliviousness. As well as this, I think I managed to mix action, emotion and depth really well. My secondary OCs feel more alive than others before them, Nissa was pretty complex and coherent and had a true voice of her own, and their part on the story feels important. There are tense moments, cute ones, sad ones, tragic ones... a little bit of everything. I think this one as a lot more angst and whump because I was in a bit of a dark place when I wrote it, but it still has hope and light in it, which I really love. The series also has a lot more violence than what I’m used to, but it was interesting to get out of my comfort zone a bit. 

Overall, not only do I think it’s fun to read, compelling, funny and emotional all at once, I’m just very proud that I managed to write something a little different from what I usually do and feel like I did it well. I put a big part of me in this series and for that reason Soul of a Warrior will always have a special place in my heart 💜

Lost Bird’s Forgotten Song

Author’s note: This isn’t a Something’s Changed Update, but The credit is going to the same person, @7spaceace7 because this piece was inspired by her “I Need a Surgeon” fic about Henrik! It was dark out, the night sky obsidian black and freckled with glittering stars and a full, gleaming moon. Jackieboyman, protector of the city and one pissed off superhero, was finally turning in for the night as the sun would be rising soon. As a matter of fact, he could see it starting to peak over the horizon, but Jackie was in no mood to appreciate the beauty of a sunrise against the city skyline. Jackie hadn’t been in the mood for awhile now, tense and agitated in his own skin as he spent night after night hunting for a certain elusive glitch bitch. He’d stop to help the civilians, because he couldn’t just neglect them for tragedies in his personal life, he was the hero! But it was frustrating, every night that passed without him finding Anti was another night that something could happen to the people he cared about. 

In addition to the agitation and frustration tugging at him, Jackie could feel exhaustion pulling at his mind and limbs. Every night that he went hunting for Anti was another night he didn’t sleep well, and he could tell the exhaustion was slowly taking its toll. It whispered from the corners, spawning and cultivating doubts and fears, things that he carried in his heart and which weighed heavily upon him. 

Jackie would blame the exhaustion for his lack of awareness, but he almost didn’t notice that things weren’t quite right in his apartment. The hero paused a few paces from the open balcony he had entered through, suddenly noticing the eerie quiet to the room. It was always quiet when he came back from patrol, one of the side effects of living alone and spending all night out in an armoured protective suit saving people, but this silence… it was different. It hung heavy to the air and clung to his lungs with every breath, settling like a weight in his chest. The shadows seemed darker, more menacing in a way he hadn’t feared in a long time, pooling thick in corners and forming puddles on the ground. If he didn’t know better, he’d call it tar. Above all, it was the awful stillness that raised the most red flags in his mind. No matter how long Jackie spent away from the apartment, it always felt lived in and familiar whenever he came back. This? This felt unfamiliar and desolate, more like a crypt then a place someone actively lived in.

Something was very wrong. 

“Aw, is that all the greetings I get, Jackie boy? For a friendly neighborhood superhero, you are awful at making people feel welcome!” Anti mused, giggling maniacally at the other’s severely unamused expression. 

As if on cue, an awful, staticy cackle echoed in the room, raising the hairs on Jackie’s arms as he spun around to face the inky, shadowy corner that the Glitchy demon had concealed himself in. The red clad hero instinctively fell into a defensive stance, feet shoulder width apart and fists raised. His face falling into an angry snarl.

“Anti.”

“What the hell do you want Anti? Unless you’re looking for an ass kicking. Which I can happily provide” Jackie snarked back, glaring fiercely.

“I find it funny that you think that’s threatening, especially that you think I’d find that intimidating. Really, do you know who you’re talking to, Jackie boy? I’m offended!” Anti snorted  in a rather ugly manner before physically waving it off. “But I digress! I had a question.”

“How does it feel to be the forgotten one, Jackie? I’ve been stirring up so much chaos in the community that I’ve almost… forgotten what it’s like! Haha!” Anti asked, but can’t help breaking into cackles at his little joke, ignoring the confusion on Jackie’s face. 

“What the hell do you mean, I’m the forgotten one? The fans certainly haven’t forgotten me, and Jack loved superheroes, he’d never forget.” The hero was baffled, but didn’t fall from his defensive stance, ready if Anti tried anything. “Is this one of your tricks, Anti? Cause it’s not going to work!”

“Oh, but he was so busy, wasn’t he? Making videos, hanging out with friends… and yet he never even so much as called you” Anti pushed, eyebrow quirked and lips twisted into a sadistic grin. “You have to wonder if he had forgotten about you, Jackie. Surely it crossed your mind…”

“No, he hadn't! He would never forget any of us! Unlike you, he was our friend!” Jackie grit out, teeth bared and eyes glowing bright before he releases a bolt of green energy at the glitch. He didn't care if he singed or burned his apartment, he can always get it repaired later with a good enough excuse. If he let Anti get away now though, who knows when he would next be able to find and subdue the demon. That can’t happen, because who knows how many people Anti would have hurt by then? However, it wasn’t surprising when the glitchy rat simply glitched out of the way. “Don’t insult Jack by implying he wouldn’t remember his friends!”

“Oh testy testy... but surely you must wonder? When was the last time he came to check in on you, see how you were doing? When was the last time he did anything with you, Jackie?” The bleeding snake of an ego taunted, flicking out his wrists, and subsequently the knife, out in a bit of a shrugging gesture. Jackie could feel his blood boiling at the insinuations that Jack had left him behind, steadfastly ignoring the quiet part of his brain that was tired, insecure, and feeling small.

“Really? You're asking that? When you're the bastard that KILLED him in the first place?!” Jackie shouted, lunging forward with a fist cocked. He took a hard swing at Anti and let out a frustrated grunt when the dark ego danced just out of the way. He took a small satisfaction in the brief flash of alarm in the other’s eyes, rolling away from the retaliatory swipe of the knife. His eyes flashed radioactive green once more and he let another bolt of powerful energy fly at the other’s head, just barely missing him to slam into the wall.

“Jackie, Jackie, Jackie... you misunderstand me... when was the last time he had done anything with you before I got involved? Haha, of course I'm not asking about after I... t̶o̷o̶k̴ ̵c̴a̴r̸e̸ ̷o̴f̸ ̶h̵i̵m̵, though I am rather quite proud of that one! But my personal pride aside... surely you can't tell me never noticed?” Anti demurred, dancing out of the way of every blow Jackie was sent his way. The Glitch knew he couldn’t take a single hit or it would be game over, Jackie’s strength was no joke. He was a superhero for a reason, after all. Jackie tried to ignore the other’s nagging voice, because he knew that small, exhausted part of his brain would latch onto the other’s words if he focused on it. As it was, The hero could feel himself slowing quickly, the lack of sleep of the past couple of weeks was wearing on him and his stamina certainly took a hit. With each hit Anti dodged, Jackie would acquire another scratch or two from the other’s retaliation. Anti would never take anything lying down, after all.

“SHUT UP! GOD, You piss me off! I'm gonna knock that smug ass grin off your glitch bitch face!” Jackie screamed, not wanting to admit how that last comment was digging its barbs into his heart. He WAS slowing, the hero couldn’t muster up the speed he used to. Was it really because of the exhaustion? Or has he really been declining this entire time, and he’s just never noticed because so few of his opponents truly pushed him to his limits? … Was Anti right? 

“You got your little music video... you got that one appearance in Welcome to the game... but then you were scraping by with just references. He stopped showing you in his videos, he eventually stopped mentioning you all together.” Anti continued, voice dripping with false sympathy, as if he genuinely felt bad for Jackie falling behind. However, that was quickly disproven when his voice took a gleefully sadistic edge, grin growing horrifyingly wide, showing teeth sharp enough that it made Jackie flinch back in fear of being bitten. “Meanwhile, everyone else was getting new videos! Even that magic cat brat got to come back before you! Face it, Jack forgot all about you, Jackie. Oh, and you know what happens to Egos who are f̶o̶r̴g̶o̷t̵t̴e̴n̷, don't you?”

“Everyday, you feel yourself grow just that little bit weaker, that little bit less relevant.” Anti sang, letting his words sink into the Hero’s mind. He was taking entirely too much joy in this, it was infuriating how easily Anti was dodging. The glitch was fucking with him and he HATED it. Jackie wanted to make the asshole shut his mouth, because he just wouldn’t stop speaking. His words were like nails on a chalkboard to the hero. “HA! You're slow! You don't hit like you used to Jackie, such a shame... You would have landed that no problem back when you were still relevant... you're only still here by the skin of your teeth, allowed to live and continue only by the grace of the audience. But you and I both know just how fickle they can be, Hero~”

“HAHAHA! You can certainly try, Hero. Should I even call you that? I don't know if you even deserve that title anymore... you certainly haven't done anything to earn it~” Anti jeered, singsonging it in Jackie’s face. He had leaned in, the two practically nose to nose before glitching out of the way of the other’s punch at the last possible second, as if to emphasize his taunts. 

“No one asked you, ya ugly bastard!” Jackie shot back on instinct, though it was clearly something he shot back without thinking. With the dark thoughts starting to creep in heavily, that comment about whether he even deserved to be called a hero had shot through him like lightning. Jackie despised how the Glitch Demon knew exactly how to appeal to all of his inner demons and insecurities. Every person he failed to save, every fight that could have gone better, all of it weighed so heavily on the hero. It made for the perfect weakness to exploit. With an enraged shout, Jackie channeled all of his doubt, fear and rage into a single blow, managing to nail the demon in the nose far too quickly for the other to react. For once, the hero relished in the shattering of bone under fist, the crack of Anti’s snapping nose sounding unbelievably satisfying to the pissed off superhero.

“Oh, that hurt~” Anti crooned, sitting up with a dangerous grin, blood leaking down from his nose, dripping down his chin and joining the bloody mess of his neck. “Did I hit a N̷̹̕E̵̻̽͋R̷͎̓͠V̶̛̦̇E̶̹͐̎?! You don't need to be so sensitive, Jackie! I'm only saying what we've both been thinking! What e̶v̶e̷r̷y̵o̶n̸e̸'̶s̸ been thinking!”

“No you're not! Of course I'm a hero! That's my whole thing! I was born to be a hero! It's my duty to protect everyone!” Jackie tries to shout, but his voice was too weak to convey the same sort of authority it used to. It was clear that he was trying to recollect himself, to reassure and convince himself. Anti was starting to wear him down and Jackie didn’t know how to save himself.

“HA! You SAY that, but you only prove my point! You were BORN to be a hero, and yet what have you done?” Anti was digging in his heels, he wanted to make Jackie hurt. The hero was overwhelming in a one on one fight, but words? Words seem to be Jackie’s worst enemy. The demon’s voice turned hissed and glitchy, wanting Jackie to hear every word. “Where were you when I slit dear Jack's throat? Where were you when the good doctor was fighting for both Jack's life and his own? Jackie flinched back, Anti’s voice shrill and drilling into the hero’s temples like an ice pick to the skull. The hero was still, eyes wide as he felt himself starting to freeze up, breath catching his throat. As the words left Anti’s mouth, Jackie felt his eyes start to burn, hands shaking. He wanted to yell, to scream, anything at all to make him just. Shut. Up. He didn’t want to hear it, he couldn’t bear to hear it. Because Anti was right. Where was he? When everyone needed him, where was he? Jackie felt cold all over, like he had been dunked in ice water and left to freeze.

“Some hero you are, Jackie! Who have you saved? Where have you been, huh? You say you're a hero Jackie, but from where I stand all I see is a failure and a coward, who never deserved to called himself a hero” Anti giggled, feeling his victory on the horizon and watching with glee as the Heroic ego winced, shoulders tense and raised towards his ears defensively. Their physical struggle settled in the face of the mental anguish that Anti was gleefully inflicting upon the hero.

“Shut... shut up... you don't know what you're talking about…” Jackie tried to protest, but his voice was soft and weak, practically a whisper. The fight was draining from his form, his protests more of a token fight at this point. How could he deny it? He failed. He couldn't save anyone. Anti was right. How could he call himself the others' friend, let alone a hero? He wasn't there, and nothing can excuse that. He was a coward. The burning behind Jackie's eyes grew unbearable, but he still fought to keep the tears back. He didn't want to cry in front of Anti, didn't want to give the demon the satisfaction.

“Oh, don't I? As the villain, I think I'd know the hero the best out of anyone.” Anti cackles,  “Come on, What's wrong Jackie? It shouldn't bother you if I'm not speaking the truth~ Oh, but that's the thing, isn't  it Jackie? It IS the truth, and you and I both know it.”

The burning feeling in the hero’s eyes finally spilled over, salty tears dripping from cobalt blue eyes as Jackie choked on the rising feelings of failure and grief. Emotions that he had been so steadily ignoring in favor of hunting down Anti resurged with a vengeance, and Jackie found himself sinking to his knees as he grappled with the staticy dark thoughts choking his mind. That grappling turns literal as his choked back sobs turn into desperate, choked gasps of air as something thick and corded wrapped around his neck and squeezed. His hands, which had been at his mouth in an attempt to muffle the sounds of his grief, flew down to his throat, tugging desperately at the cord as if he could make it budge. 

…

The hero should, by all intents and purposes, be able to dislodge what he assumed to be some sort of rope or... Or physical manifestation of Anti’s powers from his throat with his superstrength. However, Jackie found that he couldn’t, the cord holding tight no matter how hard he pulled. Whether it be from a genuine sapping of his strength, or a simple lack of will to actually try, Jackie was as helpless to what was happening as any other regular human would be. The tears came faster and harder, dripping down his chin and landing in soft splashes on the ground and on his thighs. Another Failure. Some hero I am...

“Aw, don’t cry Jackie…” Anti cooed in a sickeningly sweet tone, all soft and fake concerned. The glitch lazily made his way around the kneeling hero, til he was directly behind Jackie. The demon fell into an easy crouch, arms curling around the other ego’s shoulders in a mocking facsimile of a hug. Jackie could almost believe it was one, if it weren’t for the sharp blade resting light on the tender flesh below the bruising rope burn on the hero’s neck. “It’ll all be over soon. Soon, you’ll never have to worry about failing another person. Ever. Again. I’m gonna put you out of your misery, hero, and you’ll finally be able to rest. Now doesn’t that sound just d̶e̶l̶i̶g̸h̷t̸f̷u̵l̴?̷”

That was the last thing Jackie heard the glitching demon croon before the rope was ruthlessly pulled even tighter and a silver blade was pulled, almost painlessly in comparison, across his throat. The world rapidly fell to black and then the Hero knew no more.

Changing thing up a bit @capricornsicle, that other post was becoming unwieldy.

You think you’re on a crusade to expose fandom racism and bias in Teen Wolf, but in doing so, because TW is such a specific beast, you make assumptions and add unnecessary hyperbole to your arguments. 

You’ve assumed and ran with the idea that I’m white (many do, which is strange since my icon is a black woman) and you’ve treated me a certain way because of it. But then in the same breath you’ll say there’s inherent bias against Scott McCall, a character that many people saw as white played by an actor who is white passing. 

There’s also this underlying statement that any majority of people see Scott as Latinx and automatically make it a negative thing which again, isn’t true, specifically not in Teen Wolf. 

I’ve found the antis like to take black racism experiences and try to fit Scott into that category, but even a small thing like colorism makes it so it’s not equitable. 

that’s a general statement about fans and critics alike holding characters of color up to a higher standard than white characters. It’s not everyone, it’s certainly not an attack on anyone, but it happens a lot, across various fandoms. White characters are much more often forgiven for the things they do than characters of color who do the same things.

This doesn’t happen with the frequency you think and in the Teen Wolf fandom when it does happen it is rarely if ever in regards to Scott. Other, more evident characters of color yes.. And the wild examples that the antis present are never equitable. Even when presented with context, they often have to padd it and stretch it to make it seem like some infraction has been done. What it does is seek to absolve Scott of ANY wrong doing, when really there is fault laid at both parties. 

I’ll provide a couple of examples in the moment, but the bottom like is that Stiles/Derek/Peter stans acknowledge their faults and many times love them because of it. On the show Scott was never given the chance to acknowledge his faults, the show refused to admit that he needed to grow and be redeemed of anything. This was a misstep because he became unpalatable, not as a perfect icon, but as someone whose actions didn’t hold relevant consequences. 

The Donovan Incident

Now, I disagree with some key points, but overall I think this is the most important part:

They fought, like teenagers do, especially teenagers who have gone through that kind of trauma, and then, in 5x13, they’re talking outside a gas station, and they talk and get over it,

If everyone could agree that this happened, this would be a much better place. But antis will not chalk up the experience for the contrived nonsense it was and become so enraged when people blame Scott that they can’t let it be and suddenly we’re all racists. 

Which, using racism as a tool to sooth butthurt is not okay and we see it time and time again. They take every seedling and think, “how can I add racism to this so I get my way?” which is pathetic, but also sullies the impact of real racism on the show. 

During this time Tracey was murdered, Mason was non-existent, they killed Noah and Lucas sent Kira to the desert and left her there. But being mad at Scott for intentionally misunderstanding Stiles is what’s racist? This is why antis and SDP Stans constantly bump heads. Everyone has been in a friend group where some new interloper comes in and riles things up. Usually trying to steal someone’s man, but you know there are certain things you do when that happens and Scott made ALL the wrong moves. He knew Stiles didn’t trust Theo and openly disliked him, it should have been an immediate red flag when Theo started in with Stiles violently killing someone in cold blood. Additionally, I would have LOVED if the show made the connection to Scott still being traumatized by Nogi, but again, the show made it seem like Scott was JUST FINE! and again, a disservice was made to his character. 

The point is that a not insignificant number of fans label Scott as a constant bad friend, as someone who’s always a bad influence on Stiles, and that’s really not the case.

People who label him as a constant bad friend use this as ONE example of it. I actually questioned their friendship after Motel California. I remember there were a couple of beats that made it clear they weren’t sandbox buddies, and probably met in the community little league (was it little league or soccer that they met Theo? I forget?). There have been several instances of them not being as close as they claimed. 

If Stiles can be forgiven for throwing lacrosse balls at Scott (which really fucking hurt, speaking from experience) and keying some random loner kids’ car to get him beat up because Lydia kissed him

Just a side note, Stiles was havign his fun, yes, but Scott was completely complicit in these scenes and knew 100% what was going on. Stiles was helping Scott by testing his tolerance and helping him control his heartbeat and yes they did it in bonehead teenage boy ways, but there was nothing malicious or racially motivated about it. Talk about holding characters to different levels. You’ve all made the white characters irredeemable supremacists when nothing in the canon alludes to this. 

a few antis forgive Stiles but condemn Scott. And that’s because of racial bias that makes those particular antis hold Scott to much higher standards than his white friends, which is a nice way of saying it’s racism.

Which again, is wrong in that you have absolutely no way of quantifying this for every viewer. There’s no such thing as special Scott centric racism. If someone is racist, they’re going to show it against anyone not white on the show, and that’s simply a) not the case and b) impossible to determine from the asks of one anon and some misinterpreted fic. 

Liking Scott isn’t pro-POC, no, but it is tied to racial issues in Hollywood, popular media, and fandom. Scott being Latinx (despite the fact it never comes up, he’s played by a Latinx actor and is undoubtedly TV’s favorite “ambiguously brown”) makes him connected to racial issues.

But it doesn’t, because Teen Wolf was specifically created as a world without color so coding Scott as race-neutral meant that audiences had the choice to view him that way and many did. I mean, look at the show, he has two white Italian actors playing his parents, his last name is McCall and his mother’s maiden name was Delgado which could mean anything. Jeff had a habit of casting white women with Latinx last names they got from a gracious step-father, it’s not a leap to say this was true of Melissa. This is why I refuse to give the show any representation points. Diversity sure, they’re there, but they’re not well represented and again, this neither starts nor ends with Scott McCall. 

Liking Scott is something that a lot of viewers of color end up doing

Again, not entirely true. Liking Boyd? Yes. Deaton, Morrell, Kira? Yes. Scott? Sure... the response to Scott from Latinx fans was varied in interesting ways. Some went up hard for him and while I don’t acknowledge the show’s version of Scott, I write him as half Mexican in every fic. There are some who, like you, were so excited to see someone like themselves and that’s beautiful and awesome. There were also some that started excited but then were like “oh, he’s playing a white boy” which people like to forget was VERY much a thing. There was no reason to think Scott was white and in fact when Jeff received the Alma award, it was for casting Posey and not necessarily having a Latinx character. In the beginning of Teen Wolf he was actually asked if Scott was white (the phrase they used was “All American” which...), And there were still others who hated Scott instantly and thought he was wack and did NOT see themselves in him.

So even within the Latinx community alone there were several opinions. Now spread that out to hundreds of thousands and then millions of viewers. So when you say “Liking Scott is something a lot of VOC end up doing” you’re creating a value based judgement on the idea of liking YOUR version of Scott McCall. 

Which isn’t fair and isn’t correct. 

YOU ended up liking Scott because YOU appreciated the interpretation. No one can take that away from you. But when you cast this net of racism, you’re gonna end up with a lot of things that don’t fit the term and a lot of people mad that they’re caught in your web of racial bias. 

if it’s the burden of POC to fight for representation tooth and nail, then that’s the fight I’ll be fighting.

Part of it is that sometimes I worry that if I don’t post about them, if I don’t post gifs of them and talk about them and make them be part of the teen wolf tag on this site, no one else is going to.

We talked about this with your first post. Generally I’m sympathetic, but I do take issue with your methods. Yes, I’ve seen those gif tax posts and I love the concept, but... tax is something you pay in the exchange for something that you want. I don’t see POC characters as tax and I get it’s just a clever way to name what you’re doing, but I think it makes it so negative when celebrating the POC characters should be an enjoyable and inclusive thing. 

If you feel alone, it’s because you haven’t reached out to anyone. I know a lot of creators who make content for characters of color, The problem is that when you accuse people of focusing on white characters in a show FULL of white characters and cover them with a blanket of systemic bias, you’re alienating a lot of people who don’t want the drama. 

Someone just released some ao3 stats of POC characters in Sterek fics verses TW fics as a whole and Kira was sadly underrepresented, showing up in just under 45% of fics. My answer to that isn’t to scream at Stereks about how racist they are against Asians. Instead, I wanna have a Kira appreciation event, but until I can, I make sure to write Kira into my fics because I love her. I repost gifsets with her in them, I comment and seek out people who create for her and support them and if you approach some creators, the’re happy to be amenable. I’ve left comments on fics asking for a certain character and sometimes they rightfully say no, but sometimes it’s not a problem and the change is awesome. 

I feel like the bulk of antis have an idea in their mind and don’t give anyone else a freaking chance. And then, when anything negative is said about Scott, they go awf like SEE!!?!> RACISM!!!!!! when it’s honestly not the case. The anon doesn’t represent even the minority of the majority of stereks. Tumblr doesn’t, ao3 doesn’t, twitter doesn’t. That’s why it’s so much less stressful to find out ways to insert diversity and representation rather than browbeating others to do it out of shame.  

There’s this perceived bias that worms it’s way in that simply doesn’t exist at the levels you think it does. Because not only are you assuming that people dislike the characters of color because of their color, but also that they harbor negative feelings.

But, as we’ve learned from K-pop fans, it seems white people are much more willing to enjoy and put out East Asian representation than representation of people darker than them

Kira was undoubtedly brought in to bring a more Asian audience, but again, racism isn’t a pick and choose kind of thing. People who hated Kira and love Scott do not see Scott as Latinx. And Kira has more posts by a small margin mostly because she was there and she had a family and large ties to the plot. Not because kids loves k-pop (which wasn’t even that big during her run). 

And THIS:

Boyd was specifically not stereotypes as aggressive and athletic, and in all fanfic is usually the one who reasons and is most level headed. He came from a poor background, but so did Isaac, and he questioned Derek and Scott. This is what I mean, while I agree that it’s your interpretation, you can’t say it’s a universal interpretation and then judge others because of it. 

The only time I care is when people specifically dislike Scott because of perceived affronts to Stiles and/or Derek, and I say “perceived” because I refer specifically to ones those specific anons and antis take completely out of context, blow out of proportion, or just make up.

Lol, again, your perception, because I can give you several canon based reasons to be upset with Scott, but of course you’ll find a way, no matter how tangential to twist it, because he’s your fave and canon is a mess. This is the freaking point. Let people have their stories. It’s not hurting you if you also add in yours. 

I do not believe it is possible for a 16-year-old to consent to a romantic and/or sexual relationship with a 24/25-year-old, but this post isn’t about that

Now you might not like it, and that’s totally fine and valid. But age has no basis in their relationship. I’m more interested in power dynamics, which is why I didn’t like Aria/Fitz on PLL or Marrish (which I could have been on board for, but this show is trash).

Well, no, clearly I’m the Stiles since I’m right (i kid, I kid), but honestly, you’re the one putting the anon in this. I’ve been ignoring their hyperbole and we’ve been telling the antis to pick and choose and be discerning with their posts. That has nothing to do with me. If we’re Scott and Stiles then it’s one of us talking and the other not listening and doing theings they’re own way and the fact that both of us have different ideas as to which is which is really part of the fun. 

But it’s not racism.
