For those who don't have Twilight Princess but would like to know:
The move Twilight performed while fighting Dink is called the helm splitter. It's one of the Hidden Skills that the Hero's Shade, aka Time (but as a skeleton oof) taught him
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This move is often an instant kill. It is harder against Lizalfos, so the goal is to quickly turn around and deliver a slash. He lands with his back to the enemy- which made Dink grab him from behind (and bit Twi's arm ouch). But it's one of the most powerful moves Shade taught him- he practically ripped out Dink's shoulder.
One of the art screenshots is not Lu, but art Jojo did of shade teaching him to do it. (Can confirm it was terrifying- bro stopped the blade an inch from Twi's head- after telling him it's called the helm splitter)

chapter summary: Joel tries, and fails, to keep Sarah away from you, and you get to know the family across the street a little bit better. It’s a slow burn, so let the yearning begin, baby! pairing: pre-outbreak!joel miller x f!reader words: 7.7k chapter warnings: some light angst, alcohol use, references to marijuana use, parental neglect. divorce mention, implied age gap. reader has daddy issues - shocker! a/n: Was absolutely floored by the love on part one. Seriously you all are the best. I hate doing chapter summaries because I don't like giving away too much info, so I'd suggest just reading this. This story might end up being a longer than six parts, because I don't want to rush anything and it's been really fun to write these relationships as they form! Let me know what you think :)
-March 25th, 2003-
Joel cannot keep Sarah away from you.
Unfortunately, he can’t blame her. Unlike him, she doesn’t need an excuse to show up on your doorstep after school and on the weekends to be in your company. Still, he doesn’t technically know you that well, and he imagines you didn’t intend to see her as often as you did after extending some kindness to his family for one night.
Despite the two of you having not spoken since you helped him with the Tommy situation, Joel feels like he knows you, or is getting to know you, just from the snippets of information Sarah drops to him, which is then followed by a barrage of questions.
“Do you know she grew up in New York City? Have you ever been there?”
“She gave me her old tennis racket. Do you think I could start taking lessons?”
“She says her brother got her front-row tickets to The Strokes last year. You like them, don’t you?”
Joel decides to give Sarah a talking to about her tendency to wander over to your house whenever she sees your car in the driveway. Perhaps you are just being friendly, and feel bad saying no each time she’s asked to come in. He tries to broach the subject with her one morning in the kitchen while she’s eating breakfast. They’re already running behind, her for school, himself for work, but neither of them are in a rush. If you’re already late, what’s an extra ten minutes?
“Take it easy, alright? She might not want company after a long day at work,” Joel leans over the countertop, hand wrapped around a mug of hot coffee, watching her shovel cereal in her mouth.
“Dad, she said I could come over whenever,” It’s accompanied by an eye roll, which is a new thing that had started about six months back. Teenagers. Well, almost teenagers. She’s still the sweet kid he’s always known, he’s just playing with fire trying to talk to her at seven in the morning, an indent on the side of her face still fading from where she slept on a crumpled pillow.
Joel was at least grateful that she did have occasional company on nights when he was working late. It made him feel better to know Sarah wasn’t alone.
“What do you even do over there?”
“Homework, reading….watching TV.”
“So the same thing you do here?”
Sarah thinks about it. “Well, no, because she’s teaching me to knit.”
“And what does she do while you do your homework?”
“She works too. Or makes calls.” Sarah smiles a little. “It sounds like people ask her for advice a lot. She does give good advice.”
“Better than mine?” Joel holds his hand over his heart with mock offense.
Sarah groans. “Relax, don’t get jealous…there’s just stuff I can talk to her about and not you. Girl stuff.”
“Girl stuff? What like, boys?”
“No, you wouldn’t get it.”
“I was a boy once.”
“Ew, dad, gross.”
“How is that gross?”
“Just- not everything is about boys, okay?”
Joel isn’t going to argue with that, and Sarah eventually goes back to finishing her cereal.
“Alright babygirl,” he raps his knuckles on the counter after he’s finished his coffee. “I’ve gotta load up the truck, and you better get going, or I’m gonna get an earful from Miss Davis.” He grabs his keys and his wallet, then yanks a baseball cap over his mess of hair that’s long overdue for a haircut.
“Oh, I bet she would love an excuse to talk to you,” Sarah slides out of her seat with her empty bowl and marches towards the sink to rinse it out, grabbing his empty mug on the way.
“What do you mean?”
“Don’t you remember how giggly she was at parent-teacher conferences?” Sarah says. “I’ve never seen her so happy before.”
It’s Joel’s turn to roll his eyes. He’d pegged it as unusual, but never considered it was because Miss Davis was into him. He wishes Sarah isn’t so….observant.
Over the years, Joel has basically kept his head down, doing his best to keep things together. Because of that, he feels like he’s sort of lost his ability to pick up on when women are interested in him. And it’s safe to say, in general, he’s had a pretty uneventful love life since Sarah’s mom left.
For the most part, he got by on flings — one night stands, casual no-strings-attached arrangements that always fizzled out. Joel had never been a man who liked that sort of thing, and ultimately craved a deeper level of intimacy, companionship, but he had trouble sustaining anything more. And even when he thinks of the more serious relationships he’d had over the years, those were also never completely satisfying.
The fact of the matter was that when you had a kid, you weren’t just looking for someone for yourself anymore. For most people, introducing their partner to their parents is always a big deal. But for Joel, it was always introducing girlfriends to Sarah. Over the last decade he’d only ever introduced her to three different women, and at that point he had usually been dating them secretly for several months before deciding that it was serious enough. It always felt like he was trying so desperately to ensure they liked each other. But he could tell that Sarah was never quite comfortable with any of them. And when they’d start asking about moving in, marriage, and babies — he’d always panic. It was reasonable for them to want those things, hell, he wanted those things. But it had to be the right person. He knew he couldn’t bring someone into his life, forever, that didn’t love Sarah like a parent should. Like he did. No one ever would, and because of that, he knows there’s a good chance it’ll just be the two of them forever.
So, even if Sarah’s teacher, as cute as she was, were to ask him out, he would never be able to go. But less for the latter reasons, and more because he knows he’d never hear the end of it from her.
“Alright, that’s enough. I’m leaving in five minutes…with or without you.”
“Nooo!” Sarah screams in mock panic, scrambling upstairs to brush her teeth.
Joel exits through the garage, grabbing a few extra tools from his workbench that he needs for the job today and a saw.
When he opens the garage door, the harsh sunlight is the first thing to greet him, and then he sees you.
You’re in your driveway across the street, barefoot and in a short, black silk robe that’s cinched at the smallest part of your waist. Next to you is a man in a suit, holding a briefcase and trying to straighten his tie. He can’t do both at the same time, though, so he pauses and turns to you, murmurs something, and you slow to help him, your fingers wrapping around the tie, tightening where it’s looped around his neck and tucking it into place, straightening his lapel before stepping away. The type of domesticity that doesn’t happen with a one-night-stand.
It makes sense, he thinks. That you’re with someone like that. It’s the world you’re in all day. And even though he’s standing in his own fucking driveway, Joel feels like he’s seeing something he’s not supposed to. Or maybe, he just doesn’t want to be seeing it.
Joel tears his eyes away, putting his stuff in the back of the truck – the toolkit, the saw, glancing over to see the man kiss you on the lips and mutter something unintelligible before getting in a shiny, blue sports car. You nod, offer an easy smile, and stoop to pick up the newspaper. The car's engine roars to life, and you cross your arms, looking after it until it peels out of the cul-de-sac.
The bashful smile you’re wearing drops instantly once it’s out of sight, and he watches you pinch the bridge of your nose, and tilt your head back to the sky.
He turns before he gets caught, and slams the back of the truck shut, which is a little ignorant in hindsight. Joel looks over his shoulder to see your attention has shifted, and you’re shielding your eyes and squinting at him.
Great.
“Hey Joel,” you wave, your opposite hand pulling at the bottom of your robe, in a futile attempt to cover yourself. You look good, obviously, but it makes Joel feel a little guilty to make the observation because it’s clear you didn’t actually intend to be seen like this.
“Morning,” he answers.
“Where’ve you been?” you ask, crossing your arms across your chest.
“Busy. Work.”
“That’s no fun but…same here, I guess,” You shuffle forward hesitantly.
Joel takes a beat to think about what he’s supposed to say in response, but doesn’t get the chance, because you speak up again.
“Hey uh, not to put you on the spot, but were you actually serious about fixing my step the other night?” you ask.
Before he can answer, you continue.
“It’s okay if you weren’t, but I twisted my ankle on it the other day, so I need to get it fixed before that happens to someone else. I was thinking maybe I’d just call-”
“No-”
“It’s no big deal if you can’t-”
“No,” Joel cuts you off. He had been biding his time, waiting for the right opportunity to bring it up to you, not realizing that taking said time probably made him look like an asshole. “Don’t call anyone else, I can do it. How about Friday night? Will you be around?”
“Friday?” you answer, pondering. “Yeah, that works. I have a friend from out of town coming to visit, so I’ll be home early because I’ve gotta pick her up from the airport.”
“Alright, I’ll try to cut out early, too.”
“And also I can pay-”
“Stop it, I”ve got you, don’t worry,” he waves his hand.
You smile at Joel. He’s sure it means nothing, but he gets some satisfaction from how sincere it is compared to the one you’d given the guy you had been escorting out of your home.
He feels himself grinning back, and you open your mouth to speak, but are cut off by the sound of his screen door slamming. Sarah stumbles down the steps, backpack hanging off one shoulder, headphones to her walkman around her ears, holding her bright pink windbreaker in one hand and a book in the other. She looks at Joel, then you, standing in your driveway, and her face lights up as she calls your name.
“Hey, Sarah,” you wave.
Sarah opens her mouth to speak, and Joel knows whatever she’s going to say will start a much longer conversation that unfortunately they just don’t have the time for.
“She’s gotta get to school,” Joel tilts his head in the direction of his daughter before she can say anything. “But I’ll get that done Friday.”
“See you then!” You turn on your heel, and he looks away for a second to Sarah before glancing back in your direction, and you’re already gone, the only evidence you were there being your front door slamming shut.
Joel waits until he and Sarah are in the car on their way to school before he speaks again.
“She’s never mentioned a boyfriend or anything, has she?”
Sarah doesn’t even look up from her book. “No.”
Joel nods, and it’s quiet for a moment.
He hears Sarah’s book shut. “Why?” she turns to him, and she’s got her eyes narrowed, like she’s trying to figure out what the question really meant. He’s never seen her make that face before, and it’s a little terrifying, because it looks like she could see right through him.
Joel wracks his brain for a good enough excuse. “If she has people over, I don’t want you hangin’ around adults I don’t know.”
That seems to satisfy Sarah, and the skeptical look on her face disappears. If anything, she seems slightly annoyed by the comment, which is definitely preferable. “Well, you don’t have to worry about that because it’s never happened.” Sarah plays with the dials on the radio, changing the station until it lands on one playing The Chicks, her favorite group. She hums along to the song, filling in the gaps whenever the radio cuts out, and looks out the window.
“Alright.”

-March 28th, 2003-
“Oh, I wanna come!” Sarah jumps up from the couch and joins Joel in the entryway. It’s Friday evening, and he’s about to head out the door to your place.
“You’re stayin’ in tonight.”
“What? Why?”
“Well first of all, you’re grounded, in case you don’t remember.”
“You don’t even know what that means, though.”
Joel shakes his head, because she’s right. He’s never had to ground Sarah before, but when he’d gotten a call from her teacher that she had failed her last math quiz, and was close to not passing the class, he figured it was an appropriate punishment. “I’m pretty sure it means you can’t leave the house.”
“But this is barely leaving the h-”
“Second of all,” he cuts her off. “She told me earlier this week she’s got a friend visiting, so it’d be rude to intrude if that’s the case.”
Sarah groans, throws her head back, and falls onto the couch dramatically. “But I’m so bored.”
“You could study. Practice dribbling, clean your room, clean your bathroom-”
“Dad, it’s literally Friday night.”
“And?”
“All that stuff is so boring.”
Joel can’t help but chuckle. “Look, when I get back we can watch a movie. This won’t take long.”
She sits up a little, placated. “Okay, but it’s my turn to pick.”
“Deal. I’ll be home in an hour or so,” he steps out onto the porch.
There’s a special kind of glow in Texas about an hour before the sun sets. Warm light filters behind the trees, casting the leaves and anything else it catches in a golden halo. Joel takes in the view for a moment as he walks across the street, skipping the rotten step and knocking on your front door.
You answer it quickly. “Hey, you wanna come in?”
Joel supposes he doesn’t have to, and could just let you know he’s here, stay out on the front porch and just get the job done, but he accepts your invitation anyway.
There’s another woman sitting cross-legged on the couch, two half-full glasses of wine on your coffee table, music playing low on some speakers in the corner. The front windows are open, despite the chill of the evening, and your sheer curtains billow in the breeze.
“Claire, this is my neighbor, Joel,” you say. “He’s helping me out with the steps. His daughter’s Sarah, the one I was telling you about. ”
“Oh, yeah.” Claire’s face lights up in recognition. “Joel. Nice to meet you.”
“You too,” he nods.
“Claire’s visiting from New York. We grew up together,” you explain.
“Oh, yeah?”
“Her and I were roommates at boarding school,” Claire explains, finishing off a glass of wine. “We got into a lot of trouble together.”
“Hmmm, if I recall, it was more like you got me into trouble, but sure,” you say.
“You were bad, if not worse, than I was.”
Joel smirks, and you turn to him, changing the subject. “She’s jetlagged, so we’re just staying in for the night.”
“But…we’re still getting drunk, obviously.”
“Oh yeah, that too,” you say flatly, although to Joel, you don’t seem drunk at all. Luckily, your friend answers his question with her next sentence.
“This one isn’t very good at keeping up, though,” Claire tilts her head in your direction, then finishes off the glass of wine in her hand.
“You sound like Vincent,” you roll your eyes.
“Oh, how is Vincent?”
“Wouldn’t you like to know?” you cross your arms and look at Joel. “She always had the biggest crush on my brother, and it was dis-gus-ting.”
“To be fair,” Claire clears her throat. “At the time, he was pretty dreamy. And if we’re being honest….he still is…too bad he’s married.”
“Divorced, actually. But still…” You wrinkle your nose. “Gross.”
“Divorced?” Claire sits up, jaw dropping. “When? Why didn’t you tell me? What happened?”
You raise your hands and shake your head, like it’s too much to get into. “It’s a long story. I’ll tell you about it later. Sorry, we’re being rude,” you turn back to Joel. “Can I get you anything? Want some wine?”
“I would, but it doesn’t usually mix well with power tools,” Joel answers. “I should be good, though, I brought everything I need.”
“Great well… I’ll let you get to it, then. you pad across the floor to return to your friend on the couch. “We’ll be in here if you need anything.”
“Sounds good,” Joel nods at you and your friend before stepping back out onto the porch.
The screen door shuts behind him, and the birds are quieting down for the night. He only has a little bit of sunlight left, but this shouldn’t take him long. Just as he is about to get started, he hears your friend’s voice, muffled, from inside the house.
“Okay, I thought you were lying because your taste in men is usually questionable, but you’re right, he is really cute.”
“Dude,” you interject, and Joel hears a sound of impact, like a smack on the arm. “Lower your voice the fucking windows are open.” Claire starts giggling, and you continue. “You know you don’t have to say, like, every thought that comes into your head.”
He hears your friend laugh even harder, and eventually you join her. Joel shakes his head, but even after he starts working, can’t keep the grin off his face.

-April 5th, 2003-
It has been the longest week of your life. Work had been hectic – you’d spent the last five days going to so many meetings and dinners with potential clients that you had almost no time to do your actual job. Plus, your visit from Claire had already wiped out nearly all your energy, since you had spent the whole last weekend showing her around Austin, entertaining.
Normally, on a Saturday like today, you’d do a number of things – the first of which would be to sleep the fuck in. The ideal schedule would go something like this: You’d get out of bed in the early afternoon and immediately order some kind of takeout – most likely pho, or ramen, or some other type of soup. You’d get high, eat the takeout, and then watch TV until you’re tired enough to go back to bed in the early evening. If you’re feeling motivated at all, you might change into a fresh pair of pajamas before you crash again. It would be the ultimate lazy day, and you had desperately wanted it.
However, the past version of yourself had made plans to play tennis in the morning with some friends, and then check out a new breakfast place in the city. Sometimes you hated how optimistic she was about your ability to wake up before 10 a.m. While you weren’t excited to play tennis, you were excited that there was, at some point, going to be food involved.
So you dragged your ass out of bed, rifled through a box of clothing in your garage (one that you still had yet to unpack) to find a tennis skirt and visor, and then got in your car to go play all before 8 a.m. Then, you’d had your ass handed to you by your friends on the court. It was a little humbling to realize that you weren’t very good at tennis anymore. The last time you’d seriously played was when you were still in school, and you’d originally started because your father had wanted you to be involved in an extracurricular activity. According to him at the time, anything involving the arts – music, dance, drama – didn’t count. You had challenged this idea, and it had escalated to become one of the top ten worst fights you’d ever had with him. After that, you had learned that it was better to just do as you were told.
You’d joined the tennis team, and started to pick up on how intrigued your father was by the trophies and ribbons you’d bring home when you did well. He started to ask you questions when he saw them, pat you on the head and say things like ‘that’s my girl’. Regardless of whether or not you liked playing, you had finally found a way to earn his attention. So, you got better. One time, he even came to your school to watch one of your matches. Of course, when you lost that one, it all kind of crumbled. But you still stuck to the sport since that’s what all your friends were doing, even if it didn't get you what you wanted.
On the drive home from your morning out, belly full of breakfast and ready for a nap, thinking of your family brings about a terrifying realization.
You look at your phone. Shit.
April 5th.
Immediately, you dial a number on your cell. You’re aware of the dangers of talking while driving but you know if you don’t make this call, you’ll never hear the end of it. The line only rings twice before it’s picked up.
“Hello?”
“Vincenzo!” you say with your best – but probably horrible – attempt at an Italian accent.
“Well, well, well….if it isn’t the estranged daughter…” the familiar timbre of your brother's voice answers. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”
You roll your eyes. “Well first of all, fuck off…” We're off to a great start. “...and second of all…Happy Birthday.”
You hear your brother’s chuckle on the other end of the line, a noise that you’d been on the wrong side of –  laughing at you, not with you – more than once, but your heart aches a little at the sound of it now. I miss you, you wish you could say, but you keep it to yourself.
“Thanks, I’m surprised you remembered,” he says, lightly.
“I’ve never forgotten.”
“There was that one year-”
“Oh my god, I was like twelve.”
“You were fourteen.”
“Okay, well, sorry…It’s been over ten years and it hasn’t happened since.”
“It feels like you’ve forgotten more than once, but that might just be because it’s pretty much the only time you ever call me these days,” Vincent says, and if you were with him, in person, you’d be able to tell by the look in his eyes whether or not he was joking. But over a cell, you’re not sure at all.
“That’s not true,” you say, turning your car into your neighborhood. “But I mean, the phone does work both ways.”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever,” you catch something flippant in his tone.
“Do you want this to be a nice conversation or are you gonna be an asshole?” you ask, maybe a little too matter-of-factly, but at least you can determine whether or not it’ll be a waste of your time to try and be cordial. If he’s in a bad mood, you know it’s pointless.
“Relax,” he says, and you hear a hint of the teenage boy you once knew. “You’re always so ready to argue with me, I’m joking.”
“Very funny,” you say, and try to be nice about it, because deep down, you know Vincent is right. You don’t talk to your brother enough to argue with him when you do speak. You take a deep breath to steady yourself. “So what are you doing on your big day? Anything special?”
“Nothing really special, I worked out, had lunch with a friend, and I think I’m having dinner with Elizabeth tonight.”
“Oh…really? Elizabeth?” At the mention of his soon-to-be ex-wife – or maybe current ex-wife? You’re not sure – you’re surprised.
“Yeah she and I are uh….talking still, I guess. For Ethan, mostly, but…I don’t know…the divorce isn’t finalized, and I think now that I’m seeing a therapist and shit, maybe we can work something out. We’ll see.”
“And do you want to work something out?”
“I mean, she’s only the love of my life so yeah, it’d be great.”
“I think so, too. How is Ethan, by the way?”
“Oh he’s great,” you hear your brother’s smile over the phone. “Just a big ball of energy, and so fucking smart. He told me he misses you the other day.”
Your heart lurches at the mention of your sweet, five-year-old nephew. “You’ll have to tell him I said hi, and that I love him.”
“Yeah, yeah, I will,” he answers. “You know, next weekend I’m having a proper birthday party.  We’re all going to the Hamptons. I could fly you out here, you could tell him in person.”
“I can’t, I got shit to do,” you answer a little too quickly, turning the car into your cul-de-sac.
“What uh, your little corporate gig keeping you busy?”
There’s a subtle dig in there, little.
“Maybe.”
“I’m telling you, all I have to do is phone a friend, and we’ll find you something here that’ll pay a thousand times better and won’t have you working weekends.”
“I don’t work weekends,” you say, pulling into your driveway.  “And I’m not interested.”
“You like making yourself miserable, don’t you?”
“Vinny,” you say, exasperated, putting your car in park. “I’m happy here.”
“In Texas? I don’t believe it,” he says. “And you know, at this point, you’ve proven whatever you wanted to dad. After everything you’ve done, he probably respects you. Like, you did it. You cut yourself off, you made a name for yourself, you don’t need us anymore. Congratulations, amazing. I get it. But you should come home now.”
“Vincent,” you repeat yourself. “I’m not going back. You know what it was like for me. For you.”
“You’re my fucking family too, you know? You can’t just let him control every decision you make,” he says, and he’s not quite yelling at you, but he is sounding a lot more stern than he was before. “And by the way, it wasn’t so bad. You and I always got along.”
“Even if I move back, things will never be like they were.”
“You don’t know that.” he says it with such a deep sadness in his voice that you want to take back every cruel thing you’d ever said to him – not just from today, from forever. And then he speaks again. “You know, you used to be so sweet when we were kids….I don’t know what happened.”
I do, you think. “I had to look out for myself.”
Before he can respond, you change the subject. “Anyways, you should move out here instead,” it’s only halfway a joke.
“I’m not leaving New York.”
“Well, I’m not leaving Austin.”
“Well…” he says, clicks his tongue. “Then I guess things’ll just stay this way.”
“I guess so.”
You wish you could offer more. But he has never understood. The silence on the other line is so loud, your ears are ringing.
“Look, I just pulled in my driveway, I gotta get going.”
“Yeah.”
“But have a nice day, okay?” you’ve gotta turn this conversation around because it went so far off the rails. “Tell Elizabeth I say hi, and I hope you do work things out with her because you know I think she’s great. And give Ethan a kiss for me.”
“I know, and I will,” you can see him closing his eyes, fingers pinching between his eyebrows.
“I love you.”
“Yeah…okay,” he says, like he doesn’t believe you, and it’s a punch to the gut. As usual, you weren’t able to say the right thing. Tears start pricking the back of your eyes, guilt twisting deep in the pit of your stomach.
“Goodbye,” in one swift movement, you end the call and get out of the car, slamming the door shut. You’re sad now, but it’s only a matter of time before you become angry, which is always easier to deal with, so you just gotta suck it up until it passes.
Trying not to be upset is such a high priority that you don’t hear your name being called right away, and when you turn around, it’s too late.
“Hey!” Sarah Miller is skidding to a stop in front of you, wearing boots that look a size too small for her feet, dressed in athletic clothes with her hair pulled back. “My dad says I’m not grounded anymore so I can-” she falters when she sees your face. “Are you okay?” she asks.
Clearing your throat, you fix your expression and try to shake away the lingering disappointment like dirt off a kitchen rug. “Yeah I’m fine,” you lie. “So does that mean you passed math?”
Since that night you let her stay when she was locked out, you’d seen quite a bit of Sarah. It was a little unconventional, and you probably needed to find friends in the community that were more age appropriate, but you enjoyed her company. She would hang out and do homework at your house while she waited for her dad to get home from work. You had always valued your independence, and told yourself you preferred to be on your own, but whenever she left, your house always felt a little emptier than you remembered. Maybe you needed to get a fish or something, since Martini’s appearances were few and far between.
“Not yet, but I did get an A on my last test. I hate to say it but my dad was right…studying actually helps.”
“Yeah, that tends to be true,” you say, relieved at how easy the smile comes, and you glance over your shoulder to see Joel standing at the edge of his driveway with his hands on his hips. He looks fucking good, and you’re almost sort of mad about it, or it’s hopefully just the irritation kicking in after the conversation with your brother.
Does Joel know? He has to. It’s like having whatever the male version of a siren is living across the street from you – working with his hands, being a doting father, and mowing the lawn shirtless when it’s hot out. And apparently this was a record-breakingly hot spring, because you’d seen that more than once. Not that you minded, though it only made you want a closer look. Years ago, you probably would’ve scoffed at what sounded like a suburban mom’s wet dream, but actually experiencing it, you felt differently. There was just something about him.
You give Joel a wave, and he waves back, shifting his weight from foot to foot like he’s trying to decide if he wants to come over and talk. As usual, he seems like he’s got somewhere to be, but he’s too polite to tell you to fuck off.
“How have you been? I’ve hardly seen you,” Sarah says. “Did you play tennis today?” she pokes at the racket that’s hung over your shoulder. “Were you serious about teachin’ me to play this summer?”
It’s hard not to be amused at the barrage of requests. You admire her ability to be so enthusiastic, so open, something that most people are unable to do, but for her, is effortless. She’s older than your nephew, but you get the same kind of relief from interacting with both of them. The kids are alright. At least, some of them are.
“Of course,” you answer, and notice that Joel is slowly and hesitantly making his way up your driveway. It’s upsetting that everytime you run into him, you conveniently look like shit – like last Tuesday when you’d just rolled out of bed and were still in your robe. Or right now, after spending the whole morning chasing after balls on a clay court, scuffed knees and hair slick with sweat. But you suppose that’s sort of what neighbors are for.
“Hey, how’s it going?” you ask Joel.
“It’s goin’,” you take him in as he gets closer, notice the way the arms of his t-shirt are just a little too tight because of his biceps, and feel like you need to take a cold shower to wash yourself of this morning. “Babygirl, we should probably get going.”
He calls his daughter babygirl? There’s no way he was being serious, that it isn’t some ironic joke, or part of an act. You always assumed that was just something you saw in movies.
“Because I did so well on my test my dad is takin’ me on a hike,” Sarah says, and then her face lights up. “Wait….you should come with us! Dad, can she come?” Sarah whirls around to face her father.
Joel looks down at Sarah, and then up at you, and then at Sarah again. “I mean, that’s fine, but…she might have other things going on.”
It’s hard to tell if he’s trying to give you an out, or if he’s hinting that you shouldn’t come. And you probably normally wouldn’t want to go, but the alternative is moping around your house and thinking of all the things you could’ve said differently to your brother to ensure the conversation would have gone better than it did. You’re always desperate for a second chance to do things over, and do them right.
You look between the two of them, back and forth. “I mean I would totally, I just…don’t want to interrupt a father-daughter activity-”
“You aren’t,” Sarah says so quickly that Joel looks offended. “I couldn’t leave the house this week so we’ve been spending too much time together.”
Joel frowns. “That’s rude.”
“What?” she says. “It’s true.”
Joel sighs. “She’s right, though. You wouldn’t be interruptin’.”
“Please?” Sarah begs, and you realize you can’t say no even if you want to. You wonder how Joel was even able to ground her for a week, looking in those big, innocent eyes.
“Yeah, just…uh, could I put my stuff inside and maybe change?” you ask, gesturing towards the house.
Joel nods, and Sarah rocks back and forth on her heels. “Yes, yes! Take as long as you need.”
“I’ll be fast,” you assure her, and duck inside.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
Halfway into the hike with Sarah and Joel, and you’ve decided you’re out of shape. You try to tell yourself there could be another reason you are so out of breath – you already worked out once today while playing tennis. But that doesn’t seem like a good enough excuse. Of course, you’re trying to play it cool, because you’re not about to embarrass yourself. Sarah is entertaining you with all kinds of talk about school, and soccer, and sleepaway camp she gets to go to for two weeks once school's out. And you suppose the pain you’re in right now is also  welcome distraction from thinking about Vincent.
However, you can’t dip away from the group to rest for a second, because Joel is already trailing behind, and he’d catch on. However, his distance – several paces back from where you and Sarah walk – is not because he’s out of shape. On the contrary, he seems to be putting almost no effort into the steep climb. He’s on his own, head on a swivel, kind of like a brooding security guard, and you wonder if he feels left out.
You steal a glance over your shoulder to take him in, shrouded by the verdant foliage. He looks at home in this environment, sun-kissed and rugged, a finger hooked behind the strap of a leather bag he carries over one shoulder, his gait measured. Aloof, but there’s a quiet confidence to him that draws you in, causes your stare to linger just a touch too long, so when he turns his head straight, his eyes catch yours. You focus back on the trail ahead.
He hasn’t said much since you’ve started hiking, or in the car, even. Most men are easy to read, but so far, Joel has kind of stumped you. There were times, during the night that you’d helped him bail his brother Tommy out of jail, that you had thought maybe he was- no. He’d been pretty tense in every other interaction you had, so you still couldn’t decide if he had been flirting with you.
And he was older than you, you were pretty sure. Not so old that it wouldn’t be out of the question for him to be interested, but enough that, depending on the type of person he was, might see you as a little too young for him. And he had a kid, responsibilities.
You were a-single woman with a high-powered career, one cat and a fish on the way. You slept in on the weekends, refused to learn to cook for one, and got violently stoned on your back porch a minimum of three times a week. In suburban Texas, most of the women your age were long since settled, and you were an outlier. It was fair to imagine that Joel probably didn’t see any real promising future when he looked your way…. or maybe he was more of a one-night stand kind of guy, and didn’t care about that at all. This was not necessarily information you needed – but you wanted it anyway.
Not feeling like an outsider would be one upside of moving back to New York – you could be exactly yourself, and still blend right in. It was one of the parts you missed most, besides Vincent. Your heart sinks, and you realize that the hill you’ve been climbing has flattened out, and so you’re able to think clearly again, which is why you’re thinking of your brother.
Sarah has pulled away, and is wandering towards a clearing. Your eyes are on her form, bounding up ahead on the pathway, the sunlight peeking through the leaves dancing on her skin, when your foot lands on a loose rock, and slips out from beneath you.
Please, God, n- You don’t even get the chance to plead yourself out of humiliation, because there’s a steady hand on your hip and your back collides with a broad chest.
“Gotcha,” Joel’s voice is right in your ear — when did he get that close?
He’s solid, strong, and for the shortest, sweetest moment, you’re overwhelmed by him – get notes of his bar soap (pine, cedar, mint)  mixed with whatever laundry detergent he used, and just the faintest bit of - Fuck. In one swift movement, he brings you upright like you’d never slipped at all, then pulls back. The skin on your hip smarts even after his hand drops away.
“You alright?” Joel steps beside you, watching Sarah, who stands with her hands on her hips, her back turned to you both.
“Yeah,” you nod. He looks back over at you. “Come on,’ he tilts his head towards his daughter, and you walk beside him to where she’s standing.
The whole hike you’d been so occupied with bullshit. Trying not to think about your brother. Trying not to act too out of breath. Trying to not let Joel catch you staring, although you’d already failed at that. But now, you wish you wouldn’t have been in your head, because what you’d come to see made worrying about all that seem stupid.
Stretched out in front of you was a wide creek with moss-colored water that flowed down over layered slabs of rock, and crashed into the waterfall’s churning basin. The sun hits the mist in just the right light, and casts a series of rainbows midair, which move and shift as you turn your head to study the lush, tree-lined shore across the river.
You’re standing with one hand on your hip, and out of the corner of your eye Sarah shuffles back a few steps to stand beside you, looping her arm through yours, her cheek on your shoulder while you both enjoy the view.
“I’m glad you got to see this,” she says, and you can just make it out over the sound of the falls. “Isn’t it pretty?”
“It’s beautiful.”
Joel’s hands land on Sarah’s shoulders as he steps close behind you both. She straightens, leans back against him until he wraps his forearm across the front of her in an easy embrace, and she grabs for his wrist with both of her hands, tucking them beneath her chin. A pang of familiar grief stirs inside you at the sight, and you turn away, back towards the view.
“This is the only time of year it’s worth seeing,'' Joel says to you. “It dries up in the summer.”
“It’s still pretty in the summer,” Sarah pipes up.
“Not as pretty.”
“Can you get me the water?” she asks. Joel grunts an affirmation and a moment later you hear the sound of a zipper.
When you’ve had a considerable amount of time to contemplate life while looking at the water swirling across the granite, you turn to find Sarah sitting on a rock, struggling to peel an orange, and dropping each tiny piece of skin she can get off into Joel’s begrudgingly outstretched hand.
You use the opportunity to stretch your calves against a nearby tree.
“Have you hiked before?” Sarah asks.
“Here and there,” you say. “But not often.”
“Why not?”
“Well this is basically a workout. I don’t like working out, I’m pretty unathletic.”
You’re surprised when that draws a smile from Joel.
“But you play tennis.”
You shrug. “Eh, kinda.”
“Me and my dad go hiking a lot.”
“That’s sweet,” your eyes flicker from hers to Joel’s, because they are both staring at you, and you’re pretty sure, though it’s hard to tell from this distance, that their eyes are the identical shade of caramel. Sarah finishes peeling her orange and Joel pockets the scraps of skin. She eats a slice before offering you both your own, and you step closer to accept it.
Sarah’s taking her last bite of orange when Joel speaks up.
“Should we head back?”
Sarah turns to take one last look. It’s mid afternoon, the slant of light from the sun as intense as it can be, and you squint when it reflects back off the water and into your eyes.
“Yeah, we can,” Sarah decides, and it’s clear that Joel would have stayed there for as long as she wanted. It wasn’t up to him.
The hike back isn’t nearly as difficult. It’s all downhill, and Joel leads. Sarah stays behind with you, and clings to your arm while she teaches you how to navigate the trail without slipping. Back at the trailhead is one steep step that drops off into a puddle of stagnant water.
Joel jumps down first, and turns to offer his hand to Sarah, who takes it and leaps lightly, landing on two feet on the other side. You aren’t sure what you’re expecting, but it’s not for Joel to offer you his hand to you as well. But he does.
“Careful,” he murmurs. And of course, you could’ve easily done this yourself, with no help. It’s a two foot drop and an inch of water. But you accept it anyways, putting some of your weight against his hand as you hop down, noticing how he doesn’t waver.
By the time you’re long since settled in the car, pulling into Joel’s driveway, you can feel sleep tugging down your eyelids. A steaming shower and a pair of pajama pants is imminent, and it’s like your body knows. Surely, you will still probably feel guilty about your brother, but you’re convinced that you won’t lose sleep over it, which you consider a win.
Sarah, who insisted that you both sit in the back together on the way home – leaving Joel in the front alone – gives you a quick hug after you’ve gotten out of the car, and then plucks the car keys from her father.
“Sorry, I drank a lot of water and I have to pee!” she says, before jogging up the walkway and unlocking her front door.
Joel lets out an exasperated sigh, but turns back look at you with startling warmth.
“Thanks for having me, I really needed that,” you tell him, and you’re not sure why you feel compelled to be honest with him, but continue on. “My brother and I got into it on the phone this morning, so if I didn’t go I probably would’ve spent all afternoon moping in bed.”
“I’m sorry,” he says, voice soft. “Is everything okay?”
“Yeah, it’ll be fine,” you say, quickly, brushing it off. “Siblings, you know?”
“Yeah,” he nods, but you can tell he isn’t convinced. “I know.”
“How’s Tommy, by the way?” you ask. “Staying out of trouble, I hope?”
“He is,” Joel answers. “We actually have a big project we might be about to book. Pays well, and will keep us employed for the next year.”
“Oh that’s exciting,” you nod. “So what I’m hearing  is…if my step rots again, you wouldn’t have time to come fix it?”
“No,” Joel chuckles again, and you’re dizzy after hearing it. “I’d make time.”
You take a deep breath. “Good to know,” you shuffle a few steps backwards. “I better get going, though.” He doesn’t answer right away, and just as you’re turning to walk across the street, Joel calls out to you again.
“Hey,” and you pause, facing him again. “I wanted to ask you if…” he hesitates, blinks and shakes his head once before continuing. “If Sarah is coming over too much. If you want, I can tell her to cool it.”
“Are you kidding?” you ask. “I don’t mind at all. She’s great company, really.”
“You sure you’re not just sayin’ that to be nice?”
You sniff, look at the ground, then back up to him. “I’m not actually very nice.”
He studies you. “I’m not sure I believe that.”
“You hardly know me,” you shrug, and his eyebrows pinch together very briefly before his expression neutralizes. “I’m just saying….if I didn’t like having her around, you would know.”
He bobs his head slowly, and you turn back around to walk to your house, glancing at him from over your shoulder.
“I’ll see you around.”

KIM MINGYU + “In the cereal aisle? Really?”
wc: 722 /// genre: boyfriend au, fluff. /// warnings: brief food mention.
note: it’s mingyu day and i realised i only have one mingyu drabble on this blog. i’ve decided to fix that. enjoy! and happy birthday to mingyu! <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As much as he would’ve liked to say otherwise, Mingyu was the type of person to fall in love deeply, thoroughly, and intensely. And when he was in love, he wanted to show the world how in love he was.
What was the point of loving someone if he couldn’t stand on his rooftop and scream that his heart was taken by the most wonderful person?
You were the opposite. You didn’t see a point in screaming you were in love – what mattered was that you felt happy and safe and no one had to know that you would do anything for him. All of that was already implied in the way you said “yes” the day he asked you to be his.
Thus you weren’t particularly affectionate or loud about your love for him. You didn’t mind that he seemed to never let go of your hand and that he placed an occasional kiss on your cheek when you were running errands.
This, however, was a problem for Mingyu.
One day, curiosity got the best of him. The two of you were at the grocery store when he finally opened his mouth and uttered, “How come you never kiss me?”
At first you paid him no mind, more preoccupied with choosing between two cereal brands. Mingyu pouted and tried again, “Hey, I asked you something.”
“What was it?” you wondered, smiling at him as you placed your choice of cereal in the cart.
“Why do you never kiss me?”
“We kiss plenty,” you argued.
He frowned at that before using his whole body to block you from moving the cart. “Yeah, we kiss. But you never kiss me.”
You sighed, unwilling to answer. You simply didn’t have an answer for him. The only reason you hadn’t kissed him yet was that you just couldn’t find the courage to do that. So, you stayed silent.
Ever the overthinker, Mingyu took it the wrong way. His lips fell into a pout, his eyes wide in worry. “Do you… Do you not want to kiss me?”
You couldn’t stand the heartbreaking look he was giving you, and so you burst, “Of course I want to kiss you!”
“Then do it already!” he demanded in a whine, moving around the cart to stand right in front of you as if to tempt you further. “Kiss me.”
You wanted to laugh. “Right now? In the cereal aisle? Really?”
But instead of laughing, he nodded seriously, staring right into your eyes. “Right now. In the cereal aisle. Really.”
If you hadn’t been shy before, you sure felt so now. Why did he have to do this in such a public place? Couldn’t he have waited until you had made it back to your apartment?
You were almost tempted to tell him no and move on, but something about the near-desperation in his eyes made you decide otherwise. One deep breath and you decided to deny him no longer.
Just like that, you gathered your courage, pursed your lips and gave him a kiss on the lips, much to his utter delight. His delight was short-lived because you leaned away just as fast as you had leaned in. “Hey! That was barely a kiss.”
“We’re in public, Mingyu. People are staring.”
“Let them stare. They’re just jealous. Kiss me again.”
You rolled your eyes. “I won’t. I’d prefer not to get banned from this store.”
“You’re no fun,” he sighed and shook his head before grabbing the cart’s handle bar and pushing it towards the dairy aisle.
You took offense to that comment and rushed after him. “I’ll give you a proper kiss when we get home.”
“I don’t believe you,” he declared, side-eyeing you as if you had wronged him in the worst way possible.
“You’re so damn lucky that I love you,” you mumbled under your breath before grabbing his chin and pulling him in for another, this time “proper” kiss. He hummed in joy, you almost did the same.
When you pulled away again, he smiled brightly. “Was that so hard?”
“I’m never taking you to the store with me again,” you solemnly swore while desperately patting your cheeks to will the sudden heat away. Damn him and his perfect personality and looks and quality kisses! “Never.”

on phandom whiteness, race and stereotypes
I've been meaning to make this post for a while. I have never been very active in this fandom space, and part of that has been due to a discomfort I have felt that i have never felt i could discuss openly. So while I want to be a part of this phandom, I need to adress the elephant in the room and I want this sideblog I created to be a space where others like me can feel safe to voice their feelings and thoughts.
To preface this, I am not looking to "cancel" dan and phil. I just want to talk about my experiences both as a hardcore phan for years, and as someone who deviates from the usual dnp fan: I'm not a white person from Europe, US, Canada.
To put it bluntly, some of their videos are extremely hard to watch and enjoy and it makes me feel alienated when no one talks about it. There is no media without "problematic" elements, but I feel like in other fandom spaces people at least talk about elements worth questioning because they may be offensive or ignorant.* And yet dan and phil are hailed as "unproblematic kings" when this is not the case at all, and it's hard to bring up how I feel.
I'm not looking to make a comprehensive list of everything they've said, but I will talk about a few examples to illustrate what I mean.
Sexy Internet Dating (1:59-2:03)
d: whats yo name
p: i like how the guinea pig is now a sassy black woman
A Day in the Life of Phil and Dan! (3:58-4:03)
p: Suncream d: suncream for your albino face p: yea d: i don't need it because i'm already black
Does anyone remember the Mexican Dan thing? He seems to have deleted most of the things associated with that period where he was tan and "jokingly" fancied himself a different race because of it but this little window to that time remains in one of the most beloved videos of all time. Can you see how this might be hard to watch? When even the most iconic videos they've made are sprinkled with little instances of ignorant comments like this?
And let me be clear, I know this was ages ago. I'm aware they might have grown and changed. What really gets to me is how nobody in the phandom ever talks about these moments. It makes me really lonely and disappointed that everyone turns a blind eye to things that might tarnish the image of their faves.
Like for example, the pewdiepie situation. I'm not going to discuss everything he did and said. But imagine how it might feel as a non-white fan to want to rewatch old dnpgames videos and find that they kept their videos with him up all this time:
youtube
They were clearly quite friendly with F*lix. Besides these videos, Felix is also casually mentioned in some of their videos and livestreams from the time before he was "cancelled" (more on that later). But did they ever say anything condemning his actions? I think that given how they had collaborated and were friends, I would expect them to say SOMETHING rather than just never speak on the matter (as far as I know, the closest they got to this was in a liveshow where dan said he had had "a conversation" with felix in a way that implied he disapproved of his actions.) Or at the very very least, is it really that hard to delete a video? They have deleted old videos for a variety of reasons. How is collabing with a known racist not reason enough to go through the trouble of deleting a video? But deleting other videos just because they're a bit"cringey" is worth that time?
I just wonder how regretful they really are at having been friends and collaborators with him. In fact, part of me wonders if they are still friends behind the scenes. If this is ever confirmed btw, that will cause me to stop watching them forever. And they might still be friends in their little white circle for all we know. After all dan and phil are long time friends of KickthePj. And PJ is STILL friends with pewdiepie.
Now, besides PJ being dnp's friend and having once been part of the phantastic foursome, I don't care much for his content except for when dan and phil have been featured (lol sorry not sorry). And this might be the case for many of you as well! But some of you ARE avid kickthepj fans and decided to ignore the fact that he uploaded a video with pewdiepie last month. There is no plausible deniability here anymore. Despite the harms pewdiepie has done in internet spaces--and how that extends to real life--NOBODY said anything about how kickthepj doesn't care enough (or at all) to simply NOT make a video with pewdiepie.
It's staggering to me that no one cares. It's shocking to me that in these videos i've mentioned, you go to the comment section and everyone will be happily enjoying the video with no mention of these things.
Is this what being "cancelled" looks like? It seems to me like with the passage of time, Pewdiepie and his friends and followers just want to sweep it all under the rug. How is it that the internet will tear a man to shreds for plagiarism but then find it in themselves to excuse racism?
Why does no one care? Is it because this space is overwhelmingly white? I think so. I think it's a conscious choice to turn a blind eye when it's convenient. So I just wanted to make this post to say that if you ever feel alienated by the white ignorance of dnp or their circle of their fans, then you can come talk to me and I won't ignore you.
I want to be a part of this phandom, I really love dan and phil, but I'm not going to "stan" them. I'm not going to make excuses for them. And I'm not going to keep quiet just so I can be a part of this fandom without making the vast majority of white fans uncomfortable.
*I'm thinking of my experiences in the supernatural fandom. (Although, i'm not saying it's perfect. There are certainly a number of fics that have made me feel very disappointed inthe creator for falling into the trap of racial stereotypes in OCs and stuff like that, and despite that so many people enjoy it and include it in rec lists.)

Homestuck 2 updated early this month, and we're Yiffy now. It's a Valentine's Day miracle!
Tumblr media
Yiffy was one of the most interesting characters in HS2, because literally everyone treated her like shit constantly. Jade's giving her daughter a smooch but also Jade sent her off to a boarding school explicitly because she was embarrassing to acknowledge and also Jade named her child Yiffy Longstocking on a joke and never bothered to change it. In the epilogues, Rose acknowledged that nothing in Candy was "real" and she was joining the rebellion basically for the luls, and one some level Jade and Rose don't think Yiffy is a real three-quarters-human person, and I think they think of her more like an OC in a game they like.
Well, that was my read of HS2, lets see how HSBC handles her.
Tumblr media
Oh, this visual is great. Kanaya is so pissed off she's turning into the Ancestor art style in real time. She also kind of looks like Batman, here.
No doubt if your POSSE OF PUBESCENT PUNKS back at school could see you now they'd throw up laughing.
I am suddenly way more interested in Yiffy's gang than I am in half the HS1 cast. What kids join a gang led by a dog girl named Yiffy Longstocking?
Engineering that reprieve might be just about the only real solid your no-show non-mom has ever actually bothered to do for you.
Oh thank christ, there was a part of me worried that Yiffy wouldn't resent her parents for being the second-worst parents in HS2. This is the most interesting thing in the sequels, I think.
TAVVY: ,,, And also, everyone knows you exist now,,, instead of just me,,, TAVVY: And our moms
TAVVY: Wow,,,! YIFFY: TAVVY: You know, i was almost kidnapped,,, once,,, TAVVY: My mom removed the window, after that, TAVVY: Which, um, sucked, TAVVY: Though, i guess you'd know, uh, about that,,,
Oh, interesting. Tavvy knew about Yiffy this whole time? Actually, this and Yiffy's description of him via narration earlier imply they grew up together. I guess that makes sense, since he's Jane's kid and Jade inexplicably put Jane in charge of Yiffy, but he never told Vrissy about her secret sister? That's a bit fucked up, dude. Yiffy's not saying anything (and I hope she doesn't for a long time, until she has something meaningful to say), but her text color is Dave's red, even though she's not related to Dave. Or she is and HSBC is going to retcon HS2's most hated plot point somehow.
Tumblr media
Pepis
Look at this ARRANT BEAVIS double fisting those cans of pop
"ARRANT BEAVIS" is a great Homestuckism
Tumblr media
The Sylph has been slow boiling, you can tell.
Interesting that Yiffy refers to Kanaya as "The Sylph". I don't know what else she'd call her, I suppose, but Yiffy of all people being the one to mention Classpect is odd.
You've only been around this earth for 15 years, but it's a self-evident fact that there are no useful authorities. Gifted with unimaginable power, their concern only stretches so far as to manhandle those dependent on them, and tangles into ineffectual deadlock the instant it meets a challenge worth addressing. Potential killed for the sake of comfort. True kindness is real, but only for those that bare teeth and break skin. Why should these disingenuous, bystanding, spineless, SELFISH adults get anything they want?
Fuck yes, Yiffy hates all the HS1 characters. I've been hoping for this, she has more beef with them all than even Tavros, and it's a bit of Vriska energy this comic has needed that neither actually Vriska really provides.
Tumblr media
Yiffy being the best thing about HS2 was maybe a hot take before, but hopefully it isn't now. She's great.
JADE: and of course you arent obligated to ever forgive me but... i dont want to lose you too! JADE: i love you kanaya JADE: youre my family KANAYA: You Fucked My Wife
This is the best update in the entire comic.
KANAYA: And Though That Travesty Of A Name Is Undoubtedly An Incomprehensibly Offensive Piece Of This Particular Puzzle KANAYA: What I See Is Not An Explanation KANAYA: But A Glossing Over Of The Worst Detail ROSE: Jane.
Yeah, HS2 kind of glossed over Rose/Jade putting TrumpHitler in charge of their literal child. I could copy/paste this whole conversation but basically Kanaya is pointing out that there's like fifty plot holes in Yiffy's backstory and it makes no fucking sense at all and are they going to retcon her to being Jade/Dave's ecto-kid?
ROSE: You've managed to exhume the solemn cadaver of my mother's memory and make her the star of another argument. KANAYA: As If You Ever Bothered To Bury Her ROSE: What does this have to do with anything!? KANAYA: What I Am Doing Is Demonstrating That I Have No Intention To Mediate This Situation KANAYA: Or Pacify It KANAYA: Or Even Be A Little Bit Nice Right Now KANAYA: So Perhaps Youll Actually Take Me Seriously For Once
This is the well-earned sass we've been waiting for since Yiffy's reveal.
ROSE: But more than anything else, I took her up on it because it felt oddly ROSE: inevitable. ROSE: Anyways, ROSE: Deep down, I knew it didn’t matter. ROSE: However we handled it. ROSE: Whatever hurt we caused. ROSE: It was never that serious.
Man, I'm glad that I'm live-blogging and put my read of the situation up as I went because I fucking called it. Yes! I am capable of retaining information when I read instead of staring at the screen slack-jawed.
ROSE: I knew you would forgive me. KANAYA: Rose KANAYA: When Did You Stop Trying JADE: yeah rose!!!!! JADE: what the fuck!!!!
Oh shit, Candy Rose is evil?
Tumblr media
JADE: b-but i just dont want things to get even worse!!!!!! KANAYA: Then stop pretending that my feelings are top priority KANAYA: AND TRY BEING HONEST FOR ONCE JADE: WHAT DOES IT EVEN MATTER!!!!!!! KANAYA: Excuse Me? JADE: you heard me! JADE: you were wronged kanaya! JADE: the truth cant change that JADE: saying it just fucking hurts more JADE: what does that accomplish? JADE: its so embarrassing, would you even get it if i had?
Tumblr media
JADE: you have no idea what its like out there JADE: how traumatizing dating regular citizens was JADE: imagine trying to love someone who already knows every available detail about you JADE: who has *opinions* on what happened to you as a child JADE: who assumes youre indestructible JADE: newsflash it fucking sucks!!!!!!! because no matter how nice they were JADE: they didnt want to know me JADE: they wanted to date the god of space
I have no notes, this is great and I'm thrilled everyone is mad now.
JADE: so everyone could lecture me again on how "bad" my "boundaries" are? ROSE: (I did that one time.) JADE: you want bad boundaries JADE: do you know how many people would be waiting outside public bathrooms to talk to me about their problems? JADE: this one guy randomly started apologizing because they cooked their hamster in the microwave! JADE: and they looked so sad... i had to hug them and say it was ok JADE: but it was not ok! JADE: they murdered their hamster! Rose: Ugh... JADE: and their other hamster killed itself KANAYA: JADE JADE: out of loneliness!!!!!
What the fuck, this is amazing.
Tumblr media
The art here is great, by the way.
JADE: millions of people told me they loved me JADE: but i was never a real person to them JADE: i couldn't let that happen to yiffy too KANAYA: What JADE: i had to save her kanaya! JADE: give her the chance to grow up as a normal kid with a normal life
Jade she's half-dog and she's named Yiffy Fucking Longstocking, that ship has sailed. How are people not going to know she's your child?
Tumblr media
Oh, okay. She wears a hat. Sure.

What. Why does Jade have a Frankenstein in her inventory? What's that about?
Tumblr media
And that was the update. Honestly? Banger, easily the best HSBC update yet. I could, and if I didn't have DnD in five minutes perhaps would (and perhaps still will!) write a whole essay on this. Phenomenal. A+

A Fleeting Memory
synopsis: you and keigo meet at a party and play hide and seek, plus almost kiss
note: hawks thoughts are put in italic!
Word count: 1.5k
“Hawks do you have any friends, at all?”
this was an out of the blue question and kinda offensive coming from a worker of the P.S.C.
“Why do you ask..?”
the worker sighed softly, “Well you see, my daughter is throwing this house party but apparently she ‘doesn’t have enough people’. So I was wondering if you wanted to spread your wings a little?”
keigo faltered for a minute, thinking it over.
“oh…I’d like that a lot.”
replied Keigo Takami, the boy with no friends.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
why was Keigo doing this?
he was never really interested in the party life so what’s the point of going to some random girls party just cause?
because he was terribly lonely that’s why.
“Alright hawks were here!”
the worker named “Akari” said
“Let’s hope you have fun yeah? I have to go back to the work place so don’t do anything stupid while I’m not here!”
shutting the car door then walking up to the door, his nerves on fire, then knocking.
before he could even get to the next knock, a good looking girl threw open the door.
“Aha! Takada your here!” the girl yelled.
the only thing going through hawks mind right about now is “who the hell is takada??”
the girl grabbed his hand a dragged him into a nice a warm living room.
“Everyone, this is Takada! my dads co-worker.”
oh so Takada is a fake name? could’ve been a little more creative.
the group excitedly starts cheering, very nice of them to do to a stranger….
“Okay so, Takada, let me introduce you to everyone.” The girl then starts pointing at everyone one at a time, “The brown haired one is Aoi, that’s Ayaka, this is Hiroto, keiko, akimitsu, and-“
holy mackerel who the hell is that…
“This is y/n, and I’m Habiki!”
careless whispers must be playing right about now because that is the most jaw dropping mouth watering- oh god their coming towards me.
“Hey there, come around her often?”
the girl named y/n joked.
What do I say? holy wow she’s so cute…what if she thinks a look stupid?? Do my wings look goo-
“Earth to Takada?” She laughed.
Takada? Oh wait that’s me.
“A-Ah y-yea I come here all the time!”
okay now what the hell was that keigo.
“How old are you? If you don’t mind me asking of course…” she spoke softly towards the end.
“15.” Keigo barked back immediately.
“That means I’m one year older than you!” She said cheerfully.
“So you’re 16?”
of course she’s 16 she literally just implied that.
“Yep! I’ll be 17 in (birth month), when’s your birthday?”
god I love her voice.
“It’s uh…December…”
“That means you’re a Capricorn! Ever been interested in astrology?” She asked.
“I…uhm..”
Before keigo could respond suddenly the girls name was called.
“Y/n! Come write these names!” The girl named…Aoi? yelled across the room.
“Eh? But why I’m talking to Takada!?”
“Because your hand writing is the prettiest!” The girl yelled angrily.
Everything about her is pretty, of course her hand writing would be too…and what the hell is astrology…?
“darn…I’ll be right back Takada!” She bounced off towards the kitchen to help with something, while hawks sat on the couch, patiently waiting for her to come back.
during this period multiple people came up to hawks speaking to him briefly, not as interesting as y/n though…
Habiki suddenly came out of nowhere shoving a hat filled with paper in hawks face…”Draw!” She barked.
Hawks took out a piece and then slowly unraveled it. It said…hider?
what the hell does that mean.
“Okay everyone has drawn from the hat of the wolves and sheep!” Habiki said.
what the hell does that have to do with hiding..?
“We…shall be playing… HIDE AND SEEK!!” Habiki said full of energy.
what’s the hell is a hide and seek?!
Then softly a hand tapped hawks shoulder… y/n did.
“You know how to play right? Just find a hiding place until someone finds you.” She said quietly as if not to embarrass him about the fact he didn’t know what hide and seek was.
your a damn angel I swear.
“Now our seekers are Aoi and Hiroto shall be seeking, So go and hide quickly!” Habiki said loud.
They suddenly start a timer and everyone separates to hide while hawks is left in shock.
wait how the hell am I supposed to hide with thews big wings?!
Hawks quickly leapt from the couch booking it towards the stairs.
Maybe I could hide under some bed covers? But that’d only work if they were messed up.
Hawks quickly peeked into a room and..the bed sheets were a mess!
“Bingo.”
Hawks dives into the covers like a kitten playing with a cat toys, throwing himself under only to met with..you.
“shit! You scared me Takada…” y/n said quietly.
shit…should I leave? No there’s no more time left to hide what do I d-
“No worries you can hide with me.” She smiled sheepishly.
god i wanna marry you.
“T-thanks…I would’ve been a cooked bird if you pushed me out.” Hawks said in a whisper level.
“We never got to continue talking..”
“y-yea?”
“Mhm…”
Awkward.
Suddenly there was loud running up the stairs, “FOUND YOU HABIKI!”
“…”
“…”
“I suppose habiki got caught…”
“And we’ll get caught if you keep speaking so loud, Takada.”
won’t lie that was kinda hot.
“m’sorry..”
“…”
at this point your staring into hawks soul, what are you thinking? hawks definitely doesn’t know.
“Can you feel anything that touches your wings? Kinda like an extra arm?”
random but okay.
“uhm…I don’t know..”
“Can I touch them?”
HOLY MARCELLO SHE WANTS TO TOUCH ME. not like that hawks. Chillax go with the flo-
“They look so soft..n’pretty..”
is it getting hot under these sheets or is it just me…
“y-yea I’m okay with that…”
“Really?” She lights up.
She slowly moves the caress the top joint of his wings.
“Fuck, that feels nice.”
“They’re so soft..” she stops, “thanks for letting me touch them..”
Wait that was it? Cmon touch a little more…!
“It felt good..kinda like when someone massages your temple?” Hawks says.
“Your name isn’t actually Takada is it?”
okay now what the holy hel, how in the world did she know-
“You’re too pretty to be just a Takada…”
She says softly.
oh thank the lord she’s just trying to flirt with me.
“N-nah that’s my real name! I think…”
He mumbles off into a sentence that can’t be heard.
“What was that?”
“I said that your….” He mumbles off again.
“One more time?”
“Isaidthatyourprettytoo….” He says far too quickly with a red face.
“I-I..well thank you…” she blushes brightly.
Her face is so red. I wanna kiss her. She so pretty, so nervous, so nice, please kiss me, please kiss me, please kiss me.
“please kiss me.”
KEIGO WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU SAY THAT ALOUD??
“O-oh gosh..your quite forward aren’t you??” you whisper yell.
“M’sorry! I-i didn’t mean to say that aloud!”
Hawks rambles trying to save himself.
“H-hey it’s okay! I mean I definitely wouldn’t mind b-but..!” She says quickly, and loud.
Hawks tries to hide his red face in his wing, unable to face the situation at hand.
“M’really sorry..”
“you don’t have to be sorry…” she softly touches the side of his face.
uh oh.
“I-I wouldn’t mind..”
Hawks faces you with a bright red face and slightly teary eyes from the embarrassment.
“would this be your first kiss, Takada?”
AHHHHHHHHHHHH-
“y-yes ma’am…” hawks says softly then turning his face back to his wing.
“Ma’am?” You say confused, “m’only a year older than you..”
you never know I might like older women, I mean I definitely like you.
“Takada?”
“Y-yes?” Hawks says.
“how bad do you want to kiss me out of ten?” You say quietly.
“so bad…” hawks says softly.
you slowly part your lips aiming towards his
fuck she’s so close, she smells so good, her breath smells..minty? oh god she’s gonna kiss me.
Hawks face gets redder and redder, parting his lips until-
“TAKADA I SEE YOUR WING!”
shit, did it bust out of the covers? Damn this guy for real ruined the whole moment.
“looks like you got caught, pretty bird” you says quietly, So, so close to the place hawks wanted you the most.
If hawks died right now- actually he feels like he just did. You so close calling him these names-
“TAKADA GET OUT OF THE BED WE FOUND YOU!” Aoi screamed.
Hawks jumps out of the covers, still hiding you.
“Fine, fine, you caught me…” he said jokingly
“You okay Takada? Your face is really red..” Aoi said with concern.
“Just being under the covers for so long…no need to worry.” Hawks said quickly.
Then after the game the two of you didn’t even speak of the cover situation, the hawks had to leave. Waving off everyone then getting into Akari’s car, his eyes lingering on you while they drives off.
“So, hawks, how did spreading your wings go?” Akira said.
wonderful, I thank you for me meeting my future wife. Next time I see that amazing beautiful angel I’ll give her a million kisses and then call her-
“SHIT!” hawks screamed.
“WHAT, WHAT HAPPENED?” Akira yelled.
Hawks pouted sadly.
“I forgot to ask for her number.”
At least keigo could live with the memory of your beauty.
Basically, you've been messing w his yakuza group anonymously, n he finally finds you (why did i think of the "me when i fucking get you" meme)
Content: Angst, eren's a bitch, suggestive, kidnapping, language, cocky-ish reader, a lil fluff, plot twist btwn u n eren
Oml this prob the darkest thing I've written
Tumblr media
It hurt to open your eyes, so here you are in this dark environment; more specifically a cold floor. There's a blindfold over your eyes, not that it matters because once again it hurts to open your eyes.
The smell of mold is so powerful that it's the only thing you take note of. Where the fuck are you? You aren't even sure how long you've been— where ever this is.
Creak, thump, thump, thump. That tiny voice was telling you to pick your head up because someone is coming, the louder voice was reminding you that you answer to no one so you will not pick your head up.
The blindfold was removed and you let out a groan. The light hitting your eyelids already feels bad enough, opening your eyes is going to be a pain in the ass.
"Open your eyes." A soft spoken voice commands. You do so out of curiosity, and boy, are your findings humorous.
"I refuse to believe I was kidnapped by a thin, blond, boy such as yourself." You attack him with your words. Those baby blues widen, the blond smiles maliciously.
"I didn't kidnap you, my friend did. I'm just here to get answers from you." The blond runs his hand through his short hair.
"So you're supposed to torture me? How cute." He only has shown enthusiasm to your behavior, which pissed you off a little.
"Precisely, I may not seem all that scary but I know how to get answers from people." He say intimidatingly.
You say nothing in return because you don't believe him at all.
"F/n, L/n, is it? That little sister of yours is very pretty. Wonder what would happen if I sent some guys-"
"My sister is more than capable of kicking ass, she learned from the best." You imply yourself as the best.
You're twenty-three while your sister is twenty. She's learned self defense and offense attacks in case of an emergency.
"Interesting, most people crack when a family member's life is at stake." He grins.
You are a little bit worried, but you know your sister better than anyone. She can handle anything thrown at her.
Armin, you learn, keeps asking questions, trying to get information out of you.
"You might want to just tell me because my buddy Connie isn't as nice as I am." He threatens.
"Let's hope he doesn't hit like a sissy." You respond.
Armin laughs like he's crazy. Then once again asked, "why have you been stealing our shipments and sabotaging our missions?" His voice no longer held any softness it had earlier.
"Like I said the last time, because I wanted to." A smirk creeped onto your face. Armin was getting impatient with you and your annoying back and forth with him.
He clicks the little earpiece and starts talking, "should I send in Connie or Mikasa? She's refusing to cooperate."
He was silent while the person on the other end spoke.
"Oh... alright I'll wait for you to arrive." Armin smirks at you an evil look in his eyes.
"You've done it now, have fun speaking to him." Armin crosses his arms and begins to whistle.
Excitement flows throughout your body, who are you going to encounter next?
Within a few minutes a man with long brown hair, emerald green eyes, and a well fitted suit walks in with a woman who has short black hair and a red scarf, the other man has a growing buzz cut and a nasty scowl on his face.
"It still surprises me that one woman has been able to cause so much chaos in my group." His velvet voice shook your soul.
"Never underestimate a woman, Eren." The black haired girl speaks, she has the voice of an angel.
"You can go Armin, thanks for the help." The brunnette dismisses him.
"Of course, if you need anything I'm in the main building." Armin smiled at you as he walked out, it was more of a childish 'you're in trouble now' kind of smile.
"Do I look familiar to you?" Eren asks.
You knew an Eren when you were a young girl, that was a long time ago. This man doesn't look the Eren you knew.
"No, am I supposed to recognize you?" Eren looks at your chained arms and he chuckles.
"You should recognize me, does 'Eren's famous mud pies' ring any bells?" He asks folding his big bulky arms.
"I didn't want to believe it was you." Is all you say sighing.
"What was your reasoning, if you didn't know I was the head of this group?" When Eren had found out his childhood crush was antagonizing him, he thought that you were trying to get his attention.
"Your father." Eren's eyes widened.
"My father?" He asks.
"Yeah, at first I thought he just didn't like my family. Recently though, from the test results it turns out he killed my father and once attempted to murder me in my sleep. I was only returning the favor. Seems the old geezer retired and put you in his place to save his ass." Before Eren could respond Connie spoke up.
"How do we know she isn't lying?" He asks.
"That would be a very sick thing to lie about." Mikasa counters.
"So Dad wasn't lying about that..." Eren whispers more to himself than to anyone in particular. You hear it anyway and your eyes squint.
"You knew?" Betrayal starts to seep through your body, even if you haven't seen Eren in a long time he was still somebody you used to trust your life with.
"Well yeah, but when he confessed it sounded too ridiculous to be true but now that I know it's true, I'm angry. I can't believe he tried to fucking kill you." The look on his face is lethal. You understand his anger but it makes you upset that he's more concerned about you than the fact that Grisha killed your father.
"It doesn't matter to you that he killed my dad?" Venom is laced in your voice, Eren's emerald eyes flicker your way and they soften for a moment.
"That's not what I meant. Of course I'm mad he killed your father. I'm... I just- I'm pissed he tried to kill the girl he knows I love! Even if that bastard is my father, he's going to pay." Eren blurts his love confession to you and everyone else is shocked, including you.
"Love? Eren what the actually fuck? Why didn't we know about this?! I thought we were like family!" Connie shouts he sounds more betrayed than angry.
"Yeah Eren, what the hell? Saying you love me won't bring my dad back." You're smug now, it hurts thinking about him but you won't cry, especially not in front of the son of the man who killed him. That would only make his death more pitiful.
"You can't seriously be implying you don't feel the same way." Eren's voice holds none of that comfort from earlier.
"Eren, don't do this. Not everything will go your way." Mikasa reminds him calmly.
"I wasn't fucking talking to you Mikasa! Answer the damn question!" He screams at you.
It seems he's the same as he's always been, your little maniac.
"Eren you are so pathetic, why obsess over someone like me?" His hands ball up into fists and it looks like he might bust a vein.
"Quit stalling, you can't tell me you don't love me after all those years we spent together." Connie grips his shoulder, but it does nothing to ground Eren because he's lunging at you in rage.
"No Eren, I don't love you. How could I? You and your asshole father can rot in hell." You're lying straight to his face, you want nothing more than to kiss him right now. It's not possible, maybe in another life where your father is still breathing.
Mikasa and Connie use all their strength to pull him back. You watch as they escort the love of your life out of the basement. He's screaming and cursing at you. The only thing you seem to tune into is, "This isn't over! I know you love me! You can't punish me for something I didn't do! I still love you." The last part was spoken quietly.
Your heart was beating loudly in your chest from everything going on. When he's out of sight, you mouth, "I love you too."
pt 2??? maybe?????
Yesterday I saw a post that basically said that Avatar wasn’t a feminist show that has a bias towards Zuko and that no female villains get redeemed(?!?)
And said that the show oversexualises Azula which like WHAT
This is not a Cuties situation the camera never accentuates cleavage or anything, if you just saw Azula showing more skin in the beach episode (because she’s at the fucking beach) and then immediately thought about sex that sounds like a you problem.
People really gotta learn what words mean - and that no show from nearly TWENTY YEARS AGO is gonna present social issues the same way modern series would. Avatar has two whole episodes in which the whole lesson is "Sexism is bad, don't mistreat women", and a ton of the female characters are absolutely badass and incredibly well-written. One or two questionable moments is not enough to make claim it is misogynistic.
A female villain not getting redeemed while a male character does is only sexist if her gender is presented as the reason why she can't be redeemed, or if they did all the same things but her actions are presented as worse - and while the ATLA fandom is often guilty of that last one (not always because of sexism, but also because of ableism), that doesn't mean the writting of the SHOW was sexist.
I say this as someone who loves Azula's character and wants a redemption arc for her: the show's ending is a tragic, but logical one. Not everyone changes. Not everyone wants to change, or even gets the chance to. It's sad, but it makes sense and there's nothing offensive about the finale (unlike the way Azula was treated in the comics, but once again the root of the problem there was "the mentally ill are inherently evil/beyond help so anything and everything done to them is justifiable").
"The show oversexualizes her" That one is bit more complex - but not THAT much.
Avatar is a show with lots of fanservice (see Zuko taking off his shirt causing birds to fly and fangirls to appear behind him squeeling), but all of it is stuff that was ALWAYS presented in a way that was 100% appropriate for children. More importantly, the show never tried to use the fanservice to compensate for poor writting or to make Azula an evil seductress (a trope that is not inherently sexist, but can become so if the writer isn't careful with it). Making Azula gorgeous in a scene, or letting Grey Delisle have some fun like the did during the confrontation Zuko and Azula had in The Awakening, is not the same as them reducing Azula from character to sex-object.
Once again, the fandom is far more guilty of the "Attractive means sexual and sex is evil" mentality than the show ever was. I lost count of how many people "theorize" that Azula is a "slut" who slept her way to the top and has even raped people (usually Zuko and Suki) even though the show made it clear she can't flirt to save her life, is so respected/feared because she's a great fighter/manipulator, and has literally never forced herself onto her brother and was obviously lying when implying she had done something Suki because THE SHOW ITSELF told us everything she was telling the Gaang on that scene was just an attempt to buy her father more time until the eclipse was over.
Some of the fans treat her as the typical "evil femme fatale that you can tell is evil because she sleeps around", but the show itself never did that.
Also a lot of what I sometimes see fans claim is "sexualization" is just mundane stuff. I lost count of how many times people were losing their shit because "WHY IS A FOURTEEN YEAR GIRL ALWAYS WEARING MAKE UP?"
Maybe because said fourteen year old is a perfectionist that can't even stand to have one hair out of place, so obviously she'd want her face looking perfect too? Or maybe she wants to look older not to "seduce" anyone but because she'd rather not risk not being taken seriously for being so young? And, crazy thought but bear with me here, maybe, just maybe... Azula likes make-up. Revolutionary concept, I know.
And it's not like the show ever got weird about it like the comics (seriously, girl is hallucinating in a straight-jacket and her hair is all messed up, but SOMEHOW she put on lipstic/the doctors did it for her????). She had a clean face when she was sleeping and when she was at the royal spa getting her hair done, and even at Chan's party her make-up is exactly the same she wears during the day. The "weirdest" place she wore it at was at the beach, and again considering it's Azula, who always wants to look perfect, I can see it.
Seriously guys, there's a difference between "TikTok is constantly telling women, teen girls and children they need to buy 37 different products that they gotta put on before anyone can *gasp* see their face" and "This cartoon had one of the characters constantly wearing make-up because that's a thing teenagers do sometimes + it helps the character be more memorable"
long post because I’ve gotten a couple of inquiries about it, couple of asks and the main reason I am speaking up on it is because I do see it happen so let’s address it together:
On the topic of inclusivity, please do not ask people to let you know if whatever you’re posting isn’t inclusive if you’re going to be upset and immediately feel attacked when people do so.
I completely understand that tone cannot be interpreted through text—I can barely understand it in person─so if you’re someone who has made that let me know announcement and someone approaches you about your work, possibly whitecoding or excluding POC, don’t go on the offense. Open yourself up to conversation with that anon and POC (not your mutuals—although, they will most likely feel inclined to chime in at your defense because you’re their friend and no one likes to see their friend put in a difficult spot but we need to understand it’s not a difficult spot, it’s just conversation about someone with darker skin or different features wanting to be able to imagine themselves in a reader insert and it doesn’t have to be antagonistic—when it comes to this topic—unless we make it so, and I only say this because when our friends chime in, more often than not an important topic regarding multiple races is dismissed for one person’s comfort and we don’t really learn anything from it other than how to be dismissive—it’s not good) and go from there. Be open! Let them know they can message you off anon to further discuss it if you don’t want to keep doing so through your inbox (but don’t threaten them).
If it’s not a hostile anon, keep the conversation going without providing malice—because the second you take offense to someone following up on what you asked them to do (since you were being a good person and wanted to let people of all colors see themselves in your work), you’re ostracizing and looking very performative.
That being said, POC (anons specifically, I’m looking at you) you have to be level-headed when you message writers about this because I have seen some out of pocket asks. Yes, they want you to let them know but you must be approachable and kind about it.
Jumping to accusations:
straight up telling them they’re white coding on purpose to leave people of color out
instead of letting them know in a respectable manner:
‘hey—I’m following up because I saw your post about wanting to be informed when something you write isn’t inclusive and I wanted to reach out and let you know that _______ mentions a detail that heavily implies the Reader is white. I know you want to be inclusive, so I just wanted to bring that to your attention.’
isn’t the way to go about it.
See, the difference?
In one, you’re openly attacking them. In the other, you’re bringing the details to their attention. I know it’s frustrating and very hurtful (writers, please be aware that it does hurt to exclude POC readers—I know it may not be your intention but it is hurtful) when we see and read the white coding, we think Oh, here we go again especially after everything we’ve recently gone through and talking about this and how a lot of us have left the fandom because there was no real place for us, but we do owe them the benefit of the doubt, especially if the writer has made it known they’re going to improve in their inclusion and wants to be informed of any slip-ups.
Now, if you do so in that respectable manner and they still lash out at you, then maybe we have a problem on our hands.
But again, we have to start with an open conversation.
And writers, if ever you’re conflicted about something relating to this, my messages are always open. I’m not stupid, I grew up reading the same books as you with a large majority of white protagonists and it does affect (effect? whatever) you’re writing. The reason it didn’t have me white-coding my work is because I’m not white and I never got the opportunity to see myself in those protagonists like you got to. I actively knew I could not be she/them and she/they do not look like me. I was reminded over and over and over again on those pages.
We don’t have to be mutuals—I just know this is a very tense subject here considering certain fics and events and all that. I’m not trying to be some token POC writer guru, but I do have this platform and a lot of readers come to me with their concerns because my blog is safe for them to do so, so I’d like to use it to help and offer advice and such if you want it. If you’re open minded and actually want to be inclusive, I’m here to support and back that, I’m not here to attack you.
Yes, readers come to me but a lot goes on behind the scenes that I and they are not aware of and this isn’t a call out post to anyone in particular.
This is an if the boot fits post.
Does it fit you?
Just wanted to say, I have loved reading you jjk analysis while I hyperfix on the fandom. I have one question that I hope you can give me some answers to. Regarding Geto, do you believe that he's earned the title of special grade like Gojo and Yuki? I fully believe that he could reach a monster level like Gojo but I also think plot didn't let him grow more. Because people call him weak for losing against Toji (someone who also beat Gojo) and he wasn't at his prime yet bit then they also say Yuta was able to easily beat him and I think while the jjk 0 was good, it didn't utilize Suguru. Because it felt like he didn't do anything for the 10 years he defected and I think it's just because 0 was made so early on. Hope this isn't a bother, I just really like how in depth you are.
hiii. thank you for your kind words <33 it's time *cracks fingers* for a little...
Analysis on Suguru Geto's Powers
first of all. let's remember together what a special grade in jujutsu kaisen means~!
— a power so unpredictable that it's labeled as a calamity
— somebody powerful enough to overthrow a country on their own.
Tumblr media
so far so clear? great.
let's also look a bit into what suguru's abilities are.
CURSE MANIPULATION
as the name implies, he can absord curses and manipulate them according to his needs/ desires, with no limit on how many at a time.
doubting him comes easy now that we know what gojo suguru's full strength is, but back in their highschool days they were called the strongest for a good reason: they were on par. on balance. gojo's birth caused cruses to go crazy and the one with the most efficient skill against curses was geto. he was so powerful in a way because gojo caused so many curses to exist, widening his range of possibilities. beautiful parallel imo.
MARTIAL ARTS
no secret that my man can throw hands. not only does he have good curses, he can also fight alongside them/use them as a distraction since unlike most shikigami users, he goes into full offensive mode. that poor old man was DONE. you've also seen how well he handles cursed weapons in jjk 0 and in general how high his battle iq is. geto was a menace.
Tumblr media
he beat this dude so hard his literal life flashed before his eyes. and look at how casually he does that 😭 i can't. kenjaku ain't ever gonna excude this type of MAJESTY.
Tumblr media
even if his fight against toji wasn't as flashy as gojo's, let's not forget that he actually did have a moment where he caught fushidaddy by surprise.
Tumblr media
considering the fact that toji is literally a battle genius, that's very much something.
Tumblr media
*clears throat.*
anyway.
the destructible power of his curses is also insane. he killed a whole village like it was just play time, no advanced plotting needed. you can say whatever you want, but being able to act on a whim like that... this absolute freedom of choice only comes from strength.
Tumblr media
tell me that shit's not scary af.
and let's not forget that he got deemed so dangerous by the jjk society that he got put on par with a curse and even in the jjk 0 movie 'he had to be exorcised'. you know how in the manga they talk about saving riko and how because they're the strongest it doesn't matter what aftermaths they get? yeah. that's the perks of having power, the perks of being 'the most powerful'.
geto wasn't in hiding mode after his silly spree— he was easy to find at his temple and he was sentenced to death on sight yet in 10 years no fkin sorcerer was able to kill him.
Tumblr media
they fr knew his whereabouts.
Tumblr media
gege also shows him in his full splendid strength through his art.
geto was more than powerful— he was a low-key beast.
his only holdback was the world in which he lived, all the anguish and misery it brought him. he started doubting himself. he started losing faith in himself as human and a sorcerer and so he sought other paths through which he could find meaning, dooming himself beyond salvation. (his cursed technique is so shitty he can't live without giving it a meaning and clinging onto a meaning, let's not forget that manga panels about the awful taste and everything).
mentally he reached stagnation and from that point...he was meant to die.
that doesn't make him weak. he definitely deserved his title and definitely was the strongest along with gojo. hope this helped
Rose Lalonde, Kanaya Maryam, Jade Harley
Page 565-572
ROSE: Kanaya,
ROSE: It looked for a moment back there as if you were going to actually go through with our "Mutilate The Hostage Beyond Recognition" ruse.
ROSE: With Yiffy rescued and the other children absent, might now be an appropriate time to... hash it all out?
KANAYA: Mm
KANAYA: And What Do You Feel Needs to be Hashed Exactly
JADE: ugh... well
JADE: kanaya i know you havent been very happy and youre probably super frustrated
JADE: but first off i want to say thank you soooo much for putting everything aside to help us
JADE: youre the reason i have my girl back!
JADE: and with minimal bullet holes too! haha
KANAYA: Ha Ha Ha
JADE: ... also... you have every right to be angry!!
JADE: this isnt a little white lie, its a whole bed of secrets which then became an entire child
JADE: but whatever it takes to earn back your trust ill do it!
JADE: ever since we first met ive respected you, felt cared for by you
JADE: i hate how i returned that kindness...
ROSE: Jade.
JADE: and of course you arent obligated to ever forgive me but... i dont want to lose you too!
JADE: i love you kanaya
JADE: youre my family
KANAYA: You Fucked My Wife
ROSE: Exhales.
KANAYA: My Apologies Jade
KANAYA: That Was Very Brave And Of Course Extremely Forthcoming Of You
KANAYA: A Refreshing Change Of Pace From The Ongoing Process Of Haggling The Truth Out Of The Two Of You Detail By Sordid Detail Following The "Yiffy Reveal"
ROSE: Implying we are leaving out information that could remedy this situation.
KANAYA: Implying
ROSE: Sorry.
KANAYA: I Didnt Want You To Remedy The Situation
KANAYA: I Wanted You To Own It
KANAYA: Instead You Let John Lead The Conversation With His Stupid Questions
KANAYA: And Sprinkled Out A Gauche Attempt At A Tear
JADE: but-
ROSE: A bit shameless perhaps.
JADE: !
KANAYA: It Was Theatrical
KANAYA: Well Unlike John I Am Not A Stranger To Your Lives
KANAYA: When You Feed Me Some Half Baked Lie About Karkat And Dave Wanting To Adopt I Know Better
KANAYA: And Though That Travesty Of A Name Is Undoubtedly An Incomprehensibly Offensive Piece Of This Particular Puzzle
KANAYA: What I See Is Not An Explanation
KANAYA: But A Glossing Over Of The Worst Detail
ROSE: Jane.
KANAYA: Rose That Woman Is Going To Ruin The Future For Our Daughter
KANAYA: And You Snuggled Into A Secrets Bed With Her
KANAYA: For So Long I Couldnt Convince You To Share A Cup Of Tea With Jade
KANAYA: Then Years Later You Happen To Grow A Sympathy Gland And Decide To Jump Right To Sharing Offspring
JADE: its my fault kanaya! she was the only option i had left...
KANAYA: Sure Let Us Go With That Considering Your Stated Distaste For Ectobiology
KANAYA: Thats Only Suitable For Trolls Correct?
JADE: no!
JADE: everyone deserves a choice
JADE: but...
JADE: i already have an entire kingdom of ecto-children
JADE: this had to be different
ROSE: No one wants to contribute to the off brand doppelgangers strolling the streets.
ROSE: Easily the worst aspect of this place.
KANAYA: Is That Why You Acquiesced
KANAYA: ?
KANAYA: Because I Am Stumped On That Part As Well
KANAYA: If Memories Serves When We Were Adopting Vriska
KANAYA: I Mentioned The Precarious Possibility Of A Jadedavekat Brood
KANAYA: What Is It That You Said Again
ROSE:
KANAYA: I Believe Your Approximate Verbiage Was That "Their Dysfunctional Human Centipede Of A Relationship Is Soaking With Lighter Fluid And Begging To Burn" And That You Would Feel Sorry For The Grub
KANAYA: Jades Qualities Rang Too Familiar Right
KANAYA: Evasive
KANAYA: Pushy
KANAYA: Lacking In Proper Coping Mechanisms
KANAYA: Carrying An Air Of Unspeakable Sadness
KANAYA: The Poor Kid
ROSE: Congratulations.
ROSE: You've managed to exhume the solemn cadaver of my mother's memory and make her the star of another argument.
KANAYA: As If You Ever Bothered To Bury Her
ROSE: What does this have to do with anything!?
KANAYA: What I Am Doing Is Demonstrating That I Have No Intention To Mediate This Situation
KANAYA: Or Pacify It
KANAYA: Or Even Be A Little Bit Nice Right Now
KANAYA: So Perhaps Youll Actually Take Me Seriously For Once
KANAYA: Instead Of Assuming You Can Pull The Baabeast Keratin Over My Eyes And Distract Me From The Awful Reality
KANAYA: That You Trusted A Monster Over Me
KANAYA: And Cant Even Tell Me Why!
ROSE: And if you don’t like the answers?
KANAYA: That Is Future Roses Problem
ROSE: I see...
ROSE: Ok.
JADE: (ok...?)
ROSE: I want it on the record, involving Jane was not my decision.
ROSE: But it was a pre-established requisite that I did not fight against.
ROSE: It is Jade’s child after all.
ROSE: And you’re not completely wrong, either.
ROSE: I may have felt some... pang of responsibility. For a litany of psychologically revealing reasons.
ROSE: But more than anything else, I took her up on it because it felt oddly
ROSE: inevitable.
ROSE: Anyways,
ROSE: Deep down, I knew it didn’t matter.
ROSE: However we handled it.
ROSE: Whatever hurt we caused.
ROSE: It was never that serious.
ROSE: I knew you would forgive me.
KANAYA: Rose
KANAYA: When Did You Stop Trying
JADE: yeah rose!!!!!
JADE: what the fuck!!!!
JADE: this is not what we discussed...
JADE: you're devaluing kanaya's feelings, minimizing our impact on her!
JADE: woah, im defending you!!!
KANAYA: NO
KANAYA: YOU ARE PISSING ME OFF
JADE: b-but i just dont want things to get even worse!!!!!!
KANAYA: Then Stop Pretending That My Feelings Are Top Priority
KANAYA: AND TRY BEING HONEST FOR ONCE
JADE: WHAT DOES IT EVEN MATTER!!!!!!!
KANAYA: Excuse Me?
JADE: you heard me!
JADE: you were wronged kanaya!
JADE: the truth cant change that
JADE: saying it just fucking hurts more
JADE: what does that accomplish?
JADE: its so embarrassing, would you even get it if i had?
JADE: you havent been alone since we were thirteen
JADE: and the first chance you got you packed up your cosmic purpose and hid away in the brooding caverns
JADE: you have no idea what its like out there
JADE: how traumatizing dating regular citizens was
JADE: imagine trying to love someone who already knows every available detail about you
JADE: who has *opinions* on what happened to you as a child
JADE: who assumes youre indestructible
JADE: newsflash it fucking sucks!!!!!!! because no matter how nice they were
JADE: they didnt want to know me
JADE: they wanted to date the god of space
JADE: and i felt SORRY
JADE: for disappointing *THEM*!!!!!
KANAYA:
ROSE: I had my suspicions but I had no idea it’d been that bad.
ROSE: You didn’t even hint at it.
JADE: why would i?????
JADE: so everyone could lecture me again on how "bad" my "boundaries" are?
ROSE: (I did that one time.)
JADE: you want bad boundaries
JADE: do you know how many people would be waiting outside public bathrooms to talk to me about their problems?
JADE: this one guy randomly started apologizing because they cooked their hamster in the microwave!
JADE: and they looked so sad... i had to hug them and say it was ok
JADE: but it was not ok!
JADE: they murdered their hamster!
Rose: Ugh...
JADE: and their other hamster killed itself
KANAYA: JADE
JADE: out of loneliness!!!!!
KANAYA: GET TO THE POINT
KANAYA: !!!!!!!!
JADE: millions of people told me they loved me
JADE: but i was never a real person to them
JADE: i couldn't let that happen to yiffy too
KANAYA: What
JADE: i had to save her kanaya!
JADE: give her the chance to grow up as a normal kid with a normal life
JADE: not one where people would befriend her to get close to me
JADE: or fucking bark at her while walking down the street!!!!!!!
JADE: and jane had the resources to provide that
JADE: every scare weve had she was able to cover up
JADE: she literally controls the media for christs sake
KANAYA: We Could Have Figured It Out
KANAYA: Indebting Yourselves To The Second Coming Of The Condescension Was Hardly The Only Answer
KANAYA: I Was Right Here
JADE: thats true but
JADE: you could have said no
JADE: or worse
JADE: i can live with rose doing this because she wanted to see what would happen
JADE: but i couldnt stand the idea of owing my kid to the fact you felt sorry for me!
JADE: especially after the dave and karkat... situation...
JADE: i couldnt do that again
KANAYA: We Could Have Helped You If You Let Us
JADE: i needed a fresh start, not to sit around taking care of grubs and watching shitty romcoms forever and wasting away in an empty house!
JADE: i wanted to live!
JADE: and living here is already so hard
JADE: and not only because of the war or what happened to dirk or whatever the hell is wrong with john
JADE: the world is fucked!!!
JADE: and yet, despite all that, yiffy turned out to be so good
JADE: and she's mine.
JADE: yiffy exists because i needed her to.
JADE: ... shes the only future i have left
KANAYA:
ROSE:
JADE:
KANAYA: Jade I Recognize You Have Had To Sacrifice Principles To Survive
KANAYA: And That Is Hard To Live With
KANAYA: Even Now I Can Sympathize
KANAYA: But 15 Years
KANAYA: ?
JADE:
KANAYA: Even If I Didnt Want Her
KANAYA: She Was Already Here
KANAYA: So Why Make It Worse
KANAYA: Why Perpetuate The Lie
JADE: i...
This post is part of the Bad Things Happen series.
Warnings: Suggestive? implied violence/torture (waterboarding to be exact), blood, strong language, triggered PTSD, and panic attack.
Synopsis: “I do not think I really need to say that you are both ‘excused’ from your duties at Justice Reigns.” The woman looked away, biting her lip. While she did look upset, at least she had the awareness and wits to not add anything lest it complicates the already messy situation they were in.
Wits, that her accomplice clearly did not possess.
***
“I suppose I don’t need to spell to you how much in trouble you two are?” Dream’s voice seemed to echo in the empty room, his arms crossed around his chest and eyes icy cold as he stared down at the two trembling cowards in front of him. “You really have some nerves to come report in my office that nothing is wrong while doing something as heinous as this behind my back.”
Each of his words was laced with venom and the sharpness of his voice felt like each word was being stabbed into them. They could do nothing but nod.
“I do not think I really need to say that you are both ‘excused’ from your duties at Justice Reigns.” The woman looked away, biting her lip. While she did look upset, at least she had the awareness and wits to not add anything lest it complicates the already messy situation they were in.
Wits, that her accomplice clearly did not possess.
He snapped his head upward with a loud and incredulous ‘What?!’ that had the woman giving him her best horrified expression. Before she could hope to stop him, he let out one of the most ridiculous and offensive sentences that Blue had ever heard being said to Dream under his nose.
“You can’t do that!” Blue took back anything he said about this man being smart, all the preparation he witnessed has been the work of luck instead. “Making criminals pay for their actions is what you are aiming for, right? We only acted like you wanted us to!”
Blue visibly cringed at the hopeful eyes of the idiot who just uttered those words. Thinking that this could possibly please Dream in any way was not even a skill issue at this point, Blue was starting to wonder just how in the world he had gotten this job.
He turned to glance at Dream who was definitely having trouble restraining himself from doing something Blue would not like to witness. Such as a stab, to name a few.
“So, betraying my trust, ganging up on one criminal while letting the others get anything they wanted as long as said criminal was being tormented, letting others in our hold run free for a little while and causing trouble was what I wanted you to do?” Dream raised an eyebrow, his tone even more venomous somehow.
At least the former master of the dungeons realized his mistake as he looked down. Seeing that Dream was even more pissed now, his assistant seemed to have finally given up any kind of dignity or loyalty she had.
“I didn’t want to do it!” she suddenly exclaimed, making the other snap his head toward her. “I did not want to, but he forced me to! He said he would get my husband jailed if I did not cooperate with him! Please, My Lord, you must believe me!”
“You bitch! You are speaking nonsense, you agreed to that from the beginning! You said you would do it because of--”
“You’re the one lying!” Dream’s non-existent patience was really starting to run thin.
“SILENCE!” He shouted, which had both jumped and lowered their head again, shaking. At least it worked to shut them up. “I do not know what made both of you think you had even the slightest chance of bargaining or whatever pitiful convincing this was but let me stop you there. I do not have the patience or time to deal with such childish banter.”
“Although, you might be interested to hear of the reasons as to why all of this happened. Won’t you hear me out for that one?” As he spoke, Blue intertwined his hand with Dream, smirking as he stared into the man’s eyes.
Dream glanced at him. “Proceed.”
“You see, these two happen to be quite... interested in us.” Blue really enjoyed the look of both anger and fear in the other’s eyes. “You’ve heard in the recording as well as I have that they’ve been targeting Hacker to get to me but really, the only thing I’ve done to them is steal you, from her--”
He did not break eye contact with the furious traitor. “--and rejected his advances, must have been quite the blow to his pride.”
He smirked as his hands curled into fists by his side, utterly humiliated.
Meanwhile, Dream’s death glare was now mixed with another emotion: disappointment.
“So, you’ve done this for the sake of petty unrequited desires?” They both shuddered as they met his gaze. He narrowed his eyes as they did not even try to deny it. “Choose the right words to beg for your lives and I might reconsider your punishment.” After he was done delivering his final warning, he turned to Blue, his eyes immediately softening.
Perhaps, that should not have made Blue’s knees get weak, but he could not help it.
God, he loved his angel boy so much.
He squeezed his hand before letting go of it. “Go wait for me in my office, okay? I will be back soon.”
Blue smiled, nodding. Then, as if it were to deal the duo a final blow, he got on his toes and leaned in to plant a small kiss on the other’s cheek, who flushed a little. “See you in ten minutes!”
He then skipped out of the room, feeling even lighter than he ever had before.
***
The first thing that Finch noticed when he pushed the door open was the fact that Hacker was awake, his eyes half-lidded but opened, nonetheless. In all honesty, it must have been the first time he had seen him awake since his last visit.
The noise made him turn his head. As Finch stepped into the room and closed the door behind him, Hacker had the time to twitch his lips upward in a smile. “Hey.”
“Hello.” His voice still sounded quite strange, but at least it was better than before. “How are you feeling?”
Hacker shrugged as he rolled onto his side to get a better view of Finch. “Weird but hey, at least I don’t feel like dying anymore, improvement!” He tried to laugh but it ended in him somehow choking and getting caught in a violent fit of coughs.
Finch panicked, about to open the door to get a nurse, a doctor, really anyone who knew about that kind of stuff. “I’m fine!” Hacker halted the thought in between coughs, holding his hand in the air like he was intending to grab Finch’s sleeve to stop him.
Obviously though, there was no way it would work out, but the thought was there at least.
“I still think it would be wiser to get someone to check on you, I’m positive that coughing out blood is not a good sign.” Hacker’s attempt at hiding it by shoving his tainted hand under the blanket did not go unnoticed, he supposed it would have been expected though.
“No, really! I am fine, there is no need to call anyone!” He insisted, grabbing a tissue from the new box Jasper put in his room last time he was there. “It happens from time to time but I’m okay, you can ask Jasper next time you see him, he’ll agree with me!”
Finch still seemed somewhat hesitant, but he did stay in the room. “If you say so, if I find out you’re lying to me though, be prepared to face the consequences.”
“Oh no, a hot cop is threatening to punish me whatever shall I do?” Hacker snickered, eyes drooping again.
“... I’m leaving.” Finch turned his back to Hacker before taking a step closer to the door, his hand already on the doorknob when Hacker called out to him.
“No wait--” Hacker surged forward, his hand reaching out to grab Finch’s sleeve. The latter’s eyes widened as he turned around, just in time to notice Hacker’s body tipping toward the ground due to the sudden weight shift.
Now, in Finch’s defense he did try to catch him but there was only so much one could do to compete with gravity, especially when the falling one was already awfully close to the ground.
Hacker’s body crashed into the ground, headfirst, in a loud thud that was soon followed by a sharp cry of pain from the man himself. Finch cursed as he crouched down next to him, the latter having curled in a trembling ball, holding his ribs with one arm.
He helped him sit up, frowning as he realized that Hacker’s breath was coming into short and fast labored pants, eyes teary.
He must have fallen onto one of his healing injuries.
Finch was already dreading trying to explain why this happened to Jasper when he promised him, he would be careful.
He extended his hand toward Hacker again to help him back onto his bed before said one’s eyes widened as he slapped Finch’s hand away with pure fear displayed on his face. “DON’T TOUCH ME!”
Finch stepped back in shock from the outburst as Hacker backed away as far as he could before his back hit the bed. He held his head with his hands after that, sniffing. “I didn’t even do anything to you, why are you doing this to me?”
Realization slowly sneaked in.
He must have forgotten where he was after hitting his head and the fact he was hurting probably did not help. The sight of his Justice Reigns uniform must have been the last blow needed to trigger some sort of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).
His mind started racing for what to do as Hacker’s breath started to get even messier, indicating he was most likely to pass out any time soon if he was not going to calm down. In a flash, he got out of his jacket and tried to approach him slowly, talking to him in a calm voice to try and soothe him.
Since he did not push him away, he assumed it was fine to wrap his fingers around his forearm.
He was quickly proved wrong.
“noNONONONO-” Hacker screamed as he tried to get away from Finch’s grip, any progress on his breathing thrown out of the window as he started sobbing. “Please please don’t drown me again, I’ll do anything just--”
His ramble was cut short when he gasped as Finch pulled him into a hug. He stuttered in confusion, eyes wide as he looked over to him.
“I won’t do anything to you, alright?” He was not fond of hugs, but at least it calmed Hacker down. Through their clothes, he could feel the violent beating of the other’s heart subsiding ever so slightly. “Just, take a deep breath for now. You are safe, you are fine.”
Hacker pulled in a shaky breath.
***
The door to Dream’s office opened to reveal the owner of said office looking calmer than he had been all week. At his sight, Blue waved enthusiastically at him from his spinning chair. “Dream! You are back!”
He let a small smile appear on his face as he made his way toward Blue who got off the chair, before he slipped down onto the chair. “So much time wasted.” He sighed, eyeing his watch in disapproval.
“I wouldn’t really call that a waste of time.” Blue hummed as he hugged the other from behind. “Did you kill them?” At the question, Dream scoffed.
“No, but I did want to. Seeing their faces makes me sick.” Blue smirked. That was exactly what he wanted to hear.
“In that case, why don’t you leave them in that abandoned warehouse at the outskirts of Justice Reigns? You could get someone to guard them for you while you think about a proper punishment.” Dream tapped his chin in though, pondering his options.
Ultimately, he nodded.
“You’re right, at least this will spare me the headache of hearing them whine about their predicament.”
Blue’s smile widened. “You could get Finch on it, it’s not like you had anything planned for him today!”
He nodded at the suggestion again, falling right into Blue’s hands as always.
So what the hell was Marcus actually trying to say?
Let's talk about everyone's favorite scene! :D
Yes, that scene, the scene where Simon goes to break it off with Marcus. This scene is - I think I can speak for us all here - the moment where the whole fandom collectively started hating Marcus. Before that, we didn't like him, obviously, because Wilmon, but he seemed like an alright sort of guy.
But then he turned so WEIRD in this scene. He acted pushy, made assumptions about Simon's feelings, framed himself as a "nice guy", overstated their relationship, and emotionally manipulated Simon by bringing up his family trauma. OUT OF NOWHERE. Causing everyone to reinterpret his character, including all his past actions, into a more sinister light.
But, for he sake of analysis, let's give him and the writers the benefit of the doubt that he was actually trying to make a point here. What was he trying to say, what did he mean?
Let's take a look, picking up after Simon denies that he ever thought that Marcus would hurt him, that that was not the point (up til now Marcus is being kind of icky, but so far at least making sense):
[Simon] I just can't right now
[Marcus] Okay. No offense, but I just want to be honest with you. Maybe you don't have the best role models for healthy relationships, after your dad. Mom told me about how Linda was feeling after that thing with Micke, and I get that it must have been hard for you and Sara, but you are not like your dad.
Come here *hug*.
I know you don't want to destroy something this beautiful [A/N: BARF].
Ok so Simon has just told him he's not ready for anything serious, and then admitted that it's related to drama with Wilhelm. Marcus then says he knows that Wilhelm "fucked him over". So, when Marcus says that thing about role models and his dad, is it a comment on Simon and Wille's relationship? Implying that Simon is possibly attracted to turbulent/toxic relationships or flaky men, because he thinks that's how relationships are, and that is preventing him from seeing the good thing he and Marcus have going? But, he says "you are not like your dad" implying that Simon is worried that he is the toxic one here.
So then, is Marcus talking about his and Simon's relationship? Does he think Simon is pulling away because he's afraid of commitment, or afraid of treating Marcus poorly if he stays?
Genuinely curious to hear all of your opinions on what Marcus means by this statement! Please drop a comment or reblog or message me! Maybe I'm just dumb and it's obvious but I was actually so confused during this scene!! And no matter how I look at it there are wild assumptions being made by Marcus.
What I find really interesting is that no one involved in the production has been willing to discuss this scene, or call out Marcus for his behavior. The closest we got was Omar going "you think so?...hmm" in response to Tommy's characterization of Marcus as having "the best heart" in that one interview. But otherwise I have only heard Omar criticizing his own character's behavior in S2, and of course Tommy enthusiastically endorsing Marcus every chance he gets.
In Sara Arrhusius' Permanent Rain Press interview, they say that Rojda described him to her as way nicer than she thought she would describe him. They say that Lisa described him as someone who would be a real challenge to Wilhem - completely different and "just good". And then goes on to describe him thrmself as someone who doesn't push, is respectful and kind. To be fair they are talking from an intimacy perspective here, but it's funny how there is no mention of his complete disregard for boundaries outside of that context.
It makes me curious if the character of Marcus came across to the audience differently than the creators intended, that actually the only takeaway we are supposed to get from his character was that of nice guy foil to Wilhelm, and not that he is a pushy, oblivious and manipulative?
Let me know your thoughts!
Completed - Shantae: Risky's Revenge
Tumblr media
You know what? I did like that Capcom NES "Little Mermaid" game. You would be absolutely right about that.
Round Two of my "Play More Steam Games" year started off rough. Windows 11 sought to be a prima donna, refusing to render anything but a black screen for two of the games from my Steam library. Luckily, all it took was forcing the executables to run in a higher priority mode through System -> Display -> Graphics, but man. That was a two-hour headache I didn't need.
Of the two games I had tested, "Shantae: Risky's Revenge" won out in terms of priority. Granted, had I known what I do now, maybe I would have tabled this one for just a little longer. It wasn't exactly watching "The Empire Strikes Back" before "A New Hope", but it may have been watching "Attack of the Clones" before anything else!
The "Shantae" series in its current incarnation is a set of Metroidvania-styled games starring the titular Shantae, the often hired and fired protector of Scuttle Town (and Sequin Land) at large. When I say "in its current incarnation", I don't mean to imply any gameplay changes. What I am trying to say is that "Shantae" was both simultaneously notable and niche in its first incarnation. Notable, in that even I—some nobody kid from Iowa—knew about this game. Niche, in…well, let's just say poor sales and the general screwed-up state of the second-hand game market has resulted in this:
Tumblr media
Dude, I own a physical copy of "Earthbound", and even those prices make me want to scream. Like, we can talk about how it might be wasteful to have companies like Limited Run Games reprint copies of games, but when this second-hand market the alternative…(Also, who do we have to bribe to get "Power Blade 2" re-released? Because JFC on those prices, too.)
Since the ancient days of the Game Boy Color, the Shantae series has had a more consistent game release schedule, cranking out a new Metroidvania about once every 3-5 years. This started with 2010's "Shantae: Risky's Revenge," the sequel to the aforementioned cult classic. In it, Shantae is tasked with securing three magic seals and recovering a stolen lamp from Risky Boots, her arch-nemesis from the previous game. Alongside a Belmont-esque hair whip attack, Shantae is also blessed with the ability to cast spells and transform into various creatures. Granted, given that these powers come to her via being half genie, you can imagine what a problem that stolen lamp just might turn out to be for her…
Originally, this game was released on the Nintendo DSi, a late-stage iteration of the Nintendo DS known for its implementation of a digital shop. Which, uh…I'm guessing isn't operational anymore. The iteration I played was the so-called "Director's Cut", which generally changed menu presentation and character artwork to use higher-resolution images. It seems like it also preserved a bonus mode that was made for an iOS version of the game, which feels a bit more substantial than just updating portraits.
Given the collapse of online shops, it's just lucky this game is available at all. (More reasons to go physical, right? Well, if game publishers ever put a complete product on their cartridges/discs in the modern era, anyway…)
There are two dichotomies in Metroidvania games that aren't often discussed. For me, these are offensive styles and end goals. See, "Metroid" games typically operate via fast ranged gameplay while "Castlevania" takes more methodical strikes, often keeping within slugging distance of its foes (Charlotte Aulin and arguably Shanoa being exemptions.) Extending from that, "Metroid" games are more rewarding for speed than item collection/map completion, while "Castlevania" games tend to reward meeting extensive collecting goals or world exploration. (There are some exceptions here too for the "Metroid" series, but it's usually more about getting tits and TFO than how many lore dumps or missile expansions you left behind.)
I bring this up because I think it helps to explain how I like my particular Metroidvania mixes and how "Shantae: Risky's Revenge" falls into this spread. See, I wouldn't classify myself as a fast gamer. I'll do weird things, and if I want to prove something, I do them as hard as I can. But, generally, I want to experience as much as I can in one go-around. I want my marks to be high in figuring out how to worm into certain locations or call a game director's bullshit. (Looking at you, Igarashi.) I'm not the kind to grind something over and over again until the speed and efficiency of my gameplay makes someone's pants fly off. I mean, I love watching other people do that, but man. I'm just not wired up to be wired. Plus, I've got hundreds of other games that I want to play in my lifetime, so I want to make what may be my only time with a game count.
So, where's "Shantae: Risky's Revenge"?
Fight-wise, this is pretty "Castlevania." Like, I wouldn't classify Shantae as being as robust as a Belmont, but the melee-ranged whipping and magic spells on a limited meter make it pretty clear that she'd fall on the "Castlevania" side of things. Good for me! Mostly. I mean, she doesn't seem to have that movement trick that Alucard et. al have where you can spam attacks at twice the speed intended by hop-slashing, but she's functional.
Girl absolutely needs that hair conditioner, though. Definitely an item worth saving up for!
Goal-wise? The game's making a cake sandwich, and it's really trying its damnedest to eat it. You can receive achievements for just finishing the game, as well as finishing it with all items, finishing it under four hours, and then finishing it both under four hours and with all items. The ending itself doesn't seem to change all that much, which is a bummer, as it ends where most "Metroid" games begin. Frankly, all you get out of it is a different picture after the credits. But, if that's something you want to tackle, boy howdy. You do you.
In terms of difficulty, the game is…honestly, very strange. Like, I was almost tempted to say that this is a good Metroidvania game for beginners, but then I hit the Battle Tower. Holy crap. One of my Tumblr mutuals mentioned that the Battle Tower is where they bailed on the game, and I can't blame them. It's a timed ascent up 10 flights of stairs filled with monster battles and a whopping 2 minutes on the clock. Like, you do get time extenders in pots between fights, but yikes. That's not something you want to deal with when you're playing late at night to recover from your mind-numbing, soul-sucking existence.
Even that tower's difficulty might not be its own fault. I think the UI for the game's shop is not clear or helpful. There's two different currencies the game uses for items (gems and jams), and the latter is not initially defined with great clarity. Like, when you look at this, what do you think this item costs?
Tumblr media
It's supposed to be 1 jam, 150 gems. But, I read that as 150 jams. Like, you get maybe a fifth of that in game max. But, when you're trying to be an independent gamer and not reading guides, that measurement can be very confusing. It should really be 1🫙150 💎, if you're going to involve icons in the mix.
Do your chemistry teacher a favor, alright? Keep your units straight.
Outside of my computation issues with the shop, I found some of the later levels' platforming to be daunting. Like, I don't know how to say this without sounding weird, but I like Metroidvania games because they generally are more forgiving about platforming than a standard game. You fell? Oh, well. Just don't land in the acid or lava or spikes, and you can try again. Maybe chug some health potions. Here? It's a bit more on "Zelda" rules, so failure isn't the worst it could possibly be. It's just with as many fiddly, narrow platforms as the game throws at you, damage can add up really quickly.
Also, those Monkey Bullet puzzles are exercises in frustration. Slippery friction + precise square navigation = screaming monkey time.
One last weird note I made was on the game's achievement system. I'm fairly certain I got two achievements that I did not meet the criteria for receiving ("Tinkercide" and "Speed Run the Baron's Lair!") Which, hell. I guess if something is given in the favor of the player, why should I bitch? It just seems weirdly implemented.
Screw those two achievements regarding withholding a puppy from an NPC and hurting it, though. Surely, the game can find something better for me to do. Like, collect cats. Another mermaid shooting gallery. Hell, we're halfway to an "Ecco" game. Give me some hoops to jump through!
It is lucky for the game that it is pretty damn unique and cute, at least in terms of style. Like, the character portraits are mid 2000s Flash animation quality, so eh there, but the sprites themselves are quite lovely. Everything is brightly colored and has a pleasant bounce to its movement. Looking at older "Shantae" footage, it seems like a lot of the animation style was preserved from the GBC game, which I imagine is a lovely touch for fans of the original game.
Sequin Land is a pretty cool setting as well. Like, my issues with this game aside, I can see why the "Shantae" games have become a solid franchise over the past decade. It's got a playful charm to it, something akin to what I grew up with in the 90s in terms of Arabian fantasy. The inclusion of the undead as a staple is a bit strange, but it's played with very well. It's the kind of game that makes you wonder if the link between zombification, civility, and coffee has something to do with adenosine receptors. I mean, I'm not a neurologist, but a part of me wants to take that joke about making coffee for zombies a little too far. It's a weird kind of inspiration, but you've gotta take it where you can get it!
Additionally, the transformation gimmick is simpler to set up than in the previous game. All it is here is holding a button down to cycle through animations until you get the one you need. I'm a simple woman. Give me a game where you can turn into a mermaid, and I'll find my own joy in it. I can bitch about the fiddliness of that monkey all day, but the mermaid? Yeah. Fine by me. (The elephant's okay too, I guess. At least it's good about keeping the undead dead!)
I'm glad that the "Shantae" series made it past this game. Between the structural issues for "Risky's Revenge" and a bummer of an ending (regardless of your skill, mind you!), it would be a shame if this was the end of the run for Shantae. There are cool portions to it, but man, I can't really recommend it. The writing goes from juvenile to depressing, and the difficulty oscillates quite a bit, so I don't know who the audience for this would be other than previously existing "Shantae" fans. Theoretically, this could have been a great Metroidvania starter for preteens. But, man. I can't see many having the gumption to tough out shooting monkey puzzles and surprise speed-run segments.
Like, don't get me wrong. I've got "Shantae and the Pirate's Curse" downloaded and ready to go for later on. (Risky's not the only vindictive bitch here.) I just don't know if I'd be right up to bat for this particular title. I mean, if you get it as a gift or for under five USD, okay. File it under the "gift horse" idiom. But, I wouldn't go over $8.00 at the very least. I don't want to be one of those pricks that have a dedicated price point for each hour of a game, but I think a dollar an hour here is a fair estimate of overall value. And I got my first (and possibly only) run done in under 8 hours, so there you go. Value calculated.
Which isn't what this game's store owner did! BOOM! LAST MINUTE DRAG ON THE STUPID STORE USER INTERFACE!
Okay, I'm done.
Did you get blocked by Aaron Sparrow on twitter???
Yeah, and the thing is, I don't even think I did anything that could warrant that reaction other than disagree with how he handled QuackerJack in the 2011 comics ((y'know, the comics where the silly toy duck guy with a short temper decided to kidnap his friends, hold them hostage, strangled a robot until it was screaming for mercy, use his bestie as a car battery, have a mental breakdown in real time while holding an office building hostage, threatened to throw a lady into the equivalent of a woodchipper for voicing that everyone present could bumrush him to stop him from causing more harm, actively implied that his doll was now talking to him and tell him to hurt people, and then just offs himself and dumps his soulless husk on his ex-girlfriend's doorstep with a note that said "this is the best I'll ever be"?))
And his response was initially "Well, maybe it would be just better if everyone just kissed all the time, since you can't accept conflict or that people can change and get fixated on a goal. 🤷‍♂️"
And I was like: "Bruh, that's not the point, tho?" and have since just dropped that and the last thing I literally said was a question pertaining to what he meant with the "Look how they massacred my boy" gif as he seems to have seen a preview of the upcoming comics he ain't a part of, but anyway, this is literally the only cross interaction I've had with him and I don't think I was that out of line to get such a response, so I'm wondering if he thinks I'm one of those people that's bothering him on other platforms, because I don't actually use anything other than Tumblr, and my other accounts are just name holders from when I was in my early 20s to make sure that I got my username grabbed in case those sites popped off with my web friends instead. I can literally just screenshot my pages on other social media and prove I'm not the name bothering him if he wants.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, I don't mind conflict in stories ((my favorite fanfiction genre to write is Angst and Hurt/Comfort)), but surely I'm not unreasonable in saying that QuackerJack using Megavolt's life support device as a car battery without his consent and draining him to the point of near unresponsiveness is kind of taking it a bit far in a comic series that's supposed to be continuing a cartoon from a weekday afternoon time block from 90s Disney, right?
Especially when the writer is making this character in question be basically Duck Joker, and not just any Joker, but scary Joker.
The cartoon funny toy making duck with a short fuse, from the same timeline and universe as Mickey Mouse, who lives on the other side of the bridge from Donald Duck and family, whose merchandise is worn by Goofy Goof's son, you gonna tell me this guy is supposed be this dark? I think Sparrow should remember: QuackerJack exists in the same era and universe as POWERLINE.
But yeah, maybe I was a bit snarky, but blocking me over that is a bit of an overreaction. Usually, there's a cool down time and then people move on and sometimes end up being mutuals with me because it's not even malicious. I literally just espressed displeasure at the way that story went. I don't have to accept that just because he's a published writer. So is JK Rowling, and we all know how well that's working out for her.
He's lucky I didn't snap at him over that atrocious "autism awareness" episode he wrote for "Young Justice". That was vile and even my bestie who isn't autistic ((but her siblings are)) and is a huge comic nerd agreed that that episode was awful and offensive and clearly written by someone who never has even interacted with an autistic person before.
Whatever. I have better things to do than let some manchild geezer with an ego the size of a planet mess with me. I'm mostly annoyed with him for being rude to my friends anyway.
Discovered Media List (July, 2022)
Hey, mi amigos!!! I had the idea to compile a list of media I discovered in July. I’ll try to keep this going every month. Some lists may be long, others may be short. The list(s) will feature films, books, songs/albums, comics, basically anything. Not all of these will be good, but I’ll still list them and add some notes to them. Hope you find these (or at least something) interesting!
Films
1. House (1977)
Directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi
*Horror Film.
This film isn’t incredible, but it’s extremely weird and charming, and I love that. There are definitely flaws, but it’s a fun watch. There are some tropy characters, but at least it’s not like the hellish Boyfriends Webtoon. Some may be seen as somewhat offensive, but we can look at that idea (which was common back in, and sometimes today) and make sure that the controversial trope doesn’t resurface. Still, I recommend this movie. Was a fun watch.
2. Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
Directed by Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris
God. This film. It blew me away. The movie is about a dysfunctional family on their way to California for the Little Miss Sunshine pageant. It’s really, really emotional, and the film does an excellent job at letting you get to know these characters. HIGHLY recommend.
3. Weathering with You (2019)
Directed by Makato Shinkai
I don’t have too much to say about this film, which is a shame, because I had a good time watching it. There were times where I felt the pacing was slow. I found myself checking how much time was left. But that’s just me. The backgrounds and landscapes were amazing. I’d recommend watching!!
4. NOPE (2022)
Directed by Jordan Peele
*Horror film.
I’m someone who actually really enjoyed NOPE. It tackled how far we as humans go to capture something on film (or to achieve something). I thought Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer’s performances were awesome. The film succeeded in scaring me. That one scene (wink wonk) messed me up for a few days and every time I heard the audio of it through an open door at work it really resurfaced that fear. I really recommend this film.
5. Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)
Directed by Stephen Chiodo
*CAMPY Horror film.
Ok. Um. This film is definitely a mess. It’s awful. But it’s FUN. I really love the clown (or should I say klown) designs. I liked the fun gadgets and the cotton candy cocoons, the flying popcorn, and the ever so lovely bigtop burger. The editing is atrocious, the acting is garbage, there are points where you want to yell and shake your screen, but I can absolutely see why people love it. It’s campy. We love that. It would be fun to watch with drunk friends.
6. American Psycho (2000)
Directed by Mary Harron
*Horror film.
Oh my god, people. This film is AWESOME. I highly, highly recommend it. Christian Bale’s performance as Patrick Bateman was amazing. There were some aspects to the movie that I really enjoyed, a couple being the displaying of narcissism with the useless business cards and showcasing that some things are all in Patrick’s head with the editing and certain events (such as the overtly theatrical death of an old woman, to a police car exploding magnificently). Seriously, this movie is awesome. Please watch it.
Short Films
1. My Little Goat (2018)
Directed by Tomoki Misato
*Horror film (?). Not sure if I should categorize it as such, but it is very disturbing.
One of my favorite aspects to this film is the animation. Stop motion!! Really awesome. Don’t see too much of that, really. It’s very charming and captivating, almost eerie and disturbing. Speaking of disturbing, the film itself is exactly that. WARNING, for those that need it, the film implies sexual abuse. Please be careful.
2. Fuelled (2021)
Directed by Michelle Hao, Fawn Chan
Technically, I discovered this short film around its release. BUT. I rewatched it this July and I NEED to talk about it, so I added it to this list, anyway. Shh. Fuelled is an animated short film that covers loss of a loved one as well as revenge on the individual responsible for the loss. The music is INCREDIBLE and aids the amazing visuals during emotional moments. The film makes me cry my eyes out every time I watch it. The animation is incredible and stylistic with its colors and textures to certain objects and environments. The lighting is impeccable and marvelous. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE watch it. My favorite short film.
That’s all for this month!! I’ve only really discovered films in July, but I’ve been exploring a variety of things (music, specifically) this August. If you guys like this, please tell me!! Hope you enjoy these films if you decide to check them out. Lots coming for August.
