okay but you can see the moment percy's heart shatters into pieces once he learns that grover was also annabeth's protector. because this child grew up watching as his peers chose schoolyard taunts over compassion. watching as his dad chose freedom over fatherhood. watching as his mother chose to protect his life by sacrificing her own. but when his mom dies, he holds onto the notion that at least he's not alone. at least he has grover. but that worldveiw wastes away when he learns that he is, first and foremost, grover's assignment. that he was no one's first choice at all.

Though, why was this black-haired boy who reeked of human-like nothing else defending him?

They could use a bit of cash. “You guys can just break me out afterwards, right?” Annabeth looks like she’s considering it. “No, guys,” Grover says. “No.” If Percy has to spend the rest of his life cleaning up after the gods, then he might as well start from the beginning.

You’re An Idiot
Tumblr media
A/N - Two PJ and Heroes of Olympus posts in a row, because my page is suddenly filled with them! Decided to write a fic about Percy because there aren’t nearly enough of these on Tumblr. I didn't end with them as an official couple because they’re 6th graders at the end of TLT, and I wanted it to feel realistic.
Day 9 of Writer’s Block Challenge
Pairing(s) : Percy x Reader
Summary : Percy’s been ignoring you for Annabeth ever since you finished the quest to return Zeus’s lightning bolt and you finally confront him about it.
Warning(s) : Actually nothing, it’s just wholesome kiddos being stupid.
Word count : 1,421
Ever since you’d arrived at Camp Half-Blood, Percy had been ignoring you. Whenever you tried to talk to him, whenever you tried to invite him to do something, he always brushed you off.
It was always “I’m busy” or “I have to go train” or “not now, Y/N.” You had been trying for weeks and eventually you just stopped trying, even you knew when to give up a fight.
It all started when he meet that blonde haired girl, Annabeth. The second he met her, it was like you never even existed, all your years of friendship thrown out the window.
When you’d talked to Grover about it, hoping that he could shed light on the situation you were in, he told you that he had been experiencing the same treatment, the same blatant dismissal.
“I hate her,” you state, settling down on one of the rocks surrounding you, Grover nodding and sitting down beside you.
“And him,” he added to your statement.
“And him,” you repeated, rolling your eyes.
“I mean, look at him,” you exclaim, gesturing towards the boy who was following her around like a lost puppy, “it’s pathetic.”
Even so, you couldn’t help but be jealous of her. She was everything you wanted to be. She was beautiful, and brave, and a leader, and most importantly, she had Percy.
You’d been harboring a crush on the boy ever since the start of third grade when you’d been put in the same class. You’d broken your red colored pencil while trying to draw Ariel and he’d offered up his without hesitation, the start of what most parents had called a “beautiful friendship.”
Somewhere along the line, around fifth grade, Grover had joined your group, your pair turning into a trio with an unbreakable bond. At least, you had thought it was unbreakable, they didn’t seem so now.
“Think she likes him?” Grover asked, pulling you from your thoughts.
“I don’t know,” you respond, “and I don’t really care.”
With that last sentiment, you began pulling your notebook out of your bag, deciding that you would continue working on the drawing of a demon you had started the previous week when you were still in a normal classroom.
“Is that the one Percy gave you?” Grover questioned, making you study the colored pencil you were holding.
“I guess so,” you mutter softly, twirling it in your hand.
“You still have that? Why?” To which you just shrugged.
“It’s a good pencil. The lead doesn't break.” You could tell that he didn’t fully believe your answer but thankfully he didn’t question it, instead picking up the book he had at his side and beginning to read.
You continued your silent activities until an arrow wizzed right past your head, barely missing you by an inch, startling you enough to make you fall backwards off the rock.
“What the hell!” You exclaim, rubbing your back as you sit up.
You look in the direction that the arrow came from and with deductive reasoning, seeing the bow in Annabeth’s hand and the arrow sticking into the tree to you left, concluded that she had been the one to fire the shot.
“That’s it,” you mutter, standing up and walking towards them, “I’m tired of them. I give up. I’m done.”
“Y/N,” Grover called out, beginning to follow you, “Y/N don’t.”
You ignored his plead, continuing to march your way over to the two imbeciles, your entire aura radiating anger and frustration, two emotions that most would not attribute to you.
“Listen here miss prissy,” you point to Annabeth, “I don’t really care what the hell you do, mean or otherwise, but the second you put my life or my friends’ lives in danger, that’s where I draw the line.”
“I’ve tried to be nice to you, I’ve tried to get along with you, I’ve tried it all. You just continue to be insufferable and immature,” you state, no longer caring about the looks you were getting from other campers, no even caring about the look she was giving you.
“And you,” you turn towards Percy, all the contempt you’d felt building over the weeks finally being let out, “you’re even worse than her.”
“Don’t even try to argue. The second we got here, the second you met her, you forgot I existed. You’ve been ignoring me for over a month, blowing me off constantly without a single thought. Can you even remember the last time we hung out? The last time you hung out with Grover?” You ask, watching as he tries to think of a time and comes up blank.
“I can’t believe I was ever friends with you,” you mutter, storming off to your cabin, Grover following close behind you.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A couple hours after Grover had left you to your devices, you hear a knocking at your door followed by a shout from your cabin leader, “Y/N, someone’s here to see you.”
“Just say it’s Grover,” you mutter, pressing your fingers to your temple at her high volume, “no one besides him ever comes to visit me.”
You're stopped dead in your tracks when you see Percy standing in front of you, a sheepish look appearing on his face when he finally catches sight of you.
“Hey,” Percy breathes, “can we talk?”
You go to try and shut the door in his face but he puts his foot in the doorway, stopping it from closing all the way. It was a clear indication that he wouldn’t leave without you hearing him out.
“I just want to apologize,” he states, looking at you pleadingly through the crack in the door.
“And why should I forgive you?” You really didn’t feel like having this conversation right now, especially not when you’re entire cabin had gone quiet to listen in on you.
“Just hear me out,” he asks, “just a few minutes of your time and if you still don’t forgive me, I’ll leave you alone.”
Knowing it was the only way to get him off your back, you open the door and begin walking in the direction of the lake. You wanted at least some semblance of privacy during this talk and the lake was your best bet.
“Go,” you order once you’d reached your destination.
“I know I’ve been a jerk. A stupid, selfish, insensitive jerk and I apologize. For ignoring you, for brushing you off, for everything. I shouldn’t had ditched you and it’ll never happen again. Also, don’t worry, I’ll apologize to Grover too. I just wanted to apologize to you first.”
After he said his piece, he waited for your response, watching you anxiously as you thought about what he said.
“I should apologize to you too, for blowing up at you earlier,” you finally say after a minute of silence, having given yourself some time to think about the real reason you were upset with him. “No,” he shakes his head, “you have no reason to apologize.”
“But I do. You ditching me wasn't the only reason I was mad,” you say softly, knowing that you had to tell him or it would eat away at you until there was nothing left.
“It wasn’t?” He asked curiously.
“No, it wasn’t,” you mutter, “it was also because I like you.”
The quiet that followed you statement made you feel a level of stress and worry that you’d never felt before. The only way you could semi-calm yourself was to fiddle with your hands and look at anything but him.
“You like me?” He questioned, pulling your attention back to him, “you like me like me?”
“Yeah,” you mumble quietly, “I do.”
“I like you too.”
Your head shoots up at his words.
“Then why did you ditch me?” You wanted to know why he’d done what he did.
“I was trying to get over you. I’ve had a crush on you since we first met but you never didn’t seem to feel anything for me, I thought that hanging out with Annabeth rather than you would kill my feelings.” He explained, to which you pinched his shoulder.
“That was a really stupid idea.”
“Yeah, I know. In hindsight it was really stupid, but cut me a break, I’m not the most logical person,” he said, making you laugh.
“That’s true,” you speak through your laughter “you’re an idiot.”
“Shut up,” he grumbled, hiding his happiness to see you laughing.
After you finally stop laughing, you’re both left with grin on your face, everything sliding back perfectly into place.

AU where Nico dies (don't hate me pls I'm sorry I love Nico and ship the hell out of Solangelo, this is just to allow for some dark AUs) transporting the Athena Parthenos in BoO.
(Sorry it's such a long post) Reyna Avila Ramírez-Arellano, revered praetor and peace-loving daughter of Bellona, loses the ability to share strength. Now, when she uses her power, she saps your energy, draws on your bravery, and poisons your mind with horrific images. Nico's death has allowed suppressed traits to resurface and overwhelm all her progress since San Juan all those years ago. She picks fights. She becomes a dictator in all but name, abolishing the Senate and making War Games a lot more "realistic": weekly funerals become commonplace, words are spoken under breaths, and terror resides in the heart of every New Roman. And so, Reyna Ramírez-Arellano turns her brilliant mind and poisonous power to Gaea's aid. Gleeson Hedge doesn't seem more than a broken satyr at first glance, his smiles never sincere, his voice never loud, his bat never raised. But when he slips off into the wilderness, he does not sit quietly among the trees and reflect. He whispers into the trees' leaves, his twisted words echoing the bitterness that now consumes his being. He has been tricked too many times: Pan, forcing thousands of satyrs to lose their lives in their quest to find him when he was alive all along; Clarisse, who never tried to connect with nature or understand his own ties to the natural world, who teaches his child the game of death while Mellie watches, fading away, unable to fight back; the gods, who, in their promise of protection, conveniently ignored the nature spirits. He is bitterest about Nico's death: about all he could have done, about what the kid should have done. The glint in his eyes scares even the worst monster that Tartarus could send. But it is Gaea he turns his allegiance to. It is Gaea who promises that he will always be good enough for her. And so, Gleeson Hedge turns nature back to its true mother: Gaea. Hazel Levesque is not someone you want as an enemy. Her golden eyes, gold like the masks of the judges of the dead, seem to see everything. Her powers grow stronger, but now she is able to control them. One glance, and she can cause an entire legion to scream and writhe in agony as she manipulates the iron in their blood, twists their shining armour, forces weapons to turn on their handlers. She stops wearing normal, mortal clothes, and now she wears flowing dresses of molten gold and bronze that no spear could pierce nor hand touch. She calls on the remnants of metal in the cave in Resurrection Bay to rise, and rise they do, twisting and weaving together at her command to form a cathedral-like vault with a solid Stygian iron throne. At the front of her temple lies a chasm from which her first creation arises, complete and healed, at last. Alcyoneus clambers out of the pit, back with his mother's life and Hazel's burning desire for destruction. And so, after seventy years, Hazel Levesque joins forces with Gaea of her own free will. Frank Zhang's arrows are no longer aimed at Tartarus's monsters, but at the people he once considered friends. The ruins of the Zhang family mansion become a shrine to Gaea, the ancient walls falling in blissful happiness into the Earth Mother's embrace. Frank returns often with fresh skulls, unfailingly whole - his arrow pierces cleanly through the eye every time. His piece of firewood safe in Gaea's belly, protected where no flame could reach, he is unstoppable. His shapeshifting causes unforseen problems with the allies' plans, it's very hard to plan how to fight a lion when he could turn into a swarm of bees at any moment. He is the ultimate spy, a literal fly on the wall, and for once, he feels needed. He feels worth something. He feels as though he is good enough, something the gods could never give. All the gods ever did for Frank, he realises bitterly, is take. His mother. His grandmother. His self-confidence. His chance for a stable, loving family. Nico. And so, Frank Zhang finds a different kind of family, one that will not let him down, in Gaea. Piper McLean never wanted to be a tragic love story; that was purely for her mother's entertainment. She
cuts her hair short. She kills Gaea's enemies on sight. Her charmspeak forces even her old family, Camp Half-Blood, to turn against each other, brother against brother, sister against sister, until bodies litter the strawberry fields and the Big House crumbles to smouldering ashes. The gods have her no love. Their boundaries mean nothing to her any more. Her love extends to her favourite mother, her boyfriend, the rest of the Seven, Grover, Reyna and Hedge. Beyond that, it is poison. Gaea takes her hands, looks into her eyes, and tells Piper that she is more than the spawn of an unfaithful, air-headed immortal, more than the damsel in distress. She tells Piper that she is who she decides to be. And Piper agrees. Gaea gives her the opportunity to be out of others' shadows. Piper McLean takes the chance and joins with Gaea, her charmspeak almost her most dangerous feature, second only to her unbridled wrath when Nico's death is mentioned.
Jason Grace owes fealty to only one eternal goddess now. He scours the Underworld with Hazel and Frank, relentless like the wolves he was brought up with. He knows no bounds, his destruction barely controllable by even Piper and her charmspeak. He has obliterated entire cities, counties, even an entire nation. He feels no regret, no remorse, no nagging guilt. He seeks out and electrocutes homophobes as his powers grow in complexity, along with his ability to control them. No matter how much they scream, the same two words shoot from Jason's scarred lips like the lightning bolts he commands: for Nico. As the darkness inside him grows, the son of Jupiter advances on Olympus, eyes and hands blazing, to destroy his father, as one of Gaea's allies, as one of Gaea's found children. Jason Grace vows by Nico's soul and Gaea's love to destroy the gods who shamelessly abandoned them.
Percy Jackson has been close to the darkness before. As just one examole, he's controlled poison to choke the goddess of misery at the edge of Chaos. But now, Annabeth's words at the time - some things aren't meant to be controlled - strike differently. Percy doesn't follow rules any more. That brooding, troublemaking face now alludes to his new form: gone is the class clown, here is something more akin to a devil. Like Hazel, he has made hundreds of people and monsters shriek in pain as he controls their blood, contorting their bodies into unnatural forms and snapping necks with a mere snap of his fingers. If Nico's death is mentioned around the pair of them - Hazel and Percy - both turn on the individual, eyes smouldering with the deceitfully cool ashes of the fire of grief, and slowly unleash their wrath. Percy cannot be controlled. He wants revenge. Part of him wishes he had never given his mother the head of Medusa to kill Smelly Gabe; it tore him to pieces when he made the fluid in her head seep out of her eyes. But she wouldn't stop begging him to leave Gaea. She had to go. She was no longer loving him as he knew he deserved. Now, Percy Jackson takes his support from the mother he should have accepted long ago: Gaea.
Annabeth Chase did not accept powers from her new mother, her better mother. She chose to use her mind as her weapon and Gaea respected that. Gaea gave her the resources she needed to wreak havoc on mortals and immortals alike. Now, instead of studying for a stupid internship in a misogynistic, capitalist society, Annabeth unleashes her fury, her grief, her mind on the world. The gods deserve to pay for what happened to Nico. The demigods need to feel her grief. The mortals started this stupid cycle of overwork and inadequate pay. Annabeth is ready to work with the mother that respects her, that loves her, that nurtures her as she deserves. And work she does. Plan after plan is developed, improved, redrafted, mocked up, redeveloped, and finally executed with clinical precision. Her mind becomes what her enemies most fear, even above her reputation: first child of Athena in millennia to reach Arachne, retriever of the Athena Parthenos, survivor of Tartarus. And she laughs, laughs in a maniacal way that makes you want to take a step back as she strides towards you, grey eyes alight with an unnatural glint as you realise that she knows everything about you and she knows how this will end. She will not let herself or her friends die. She refuses to let another situation like Nico's death happen again. So, Annabeth Chase takes Gaea's resources and turns them into a mass genocide, executed with her new mother's blessing.
Grover Underwood leads the nature spirits now. He commands dryads to extend their unstoppable tendrils through the paths that Gaea forms for them, deep in the earth, then sending them exploding through the surface and reclaiming all that was torn from them under the pretence of friendship. His empathy link with Percy allows him some degree of control, both over the son of Poseidon and over naiads. Grover is betrayed and bitterly disappointed in Pan, in the gods, in demigods, in mortals, in Nico. And so, he turns nature back home with Gleeson Hedge. The hauntingly beautiful whistling of his pipes lures demigods, mortals, even gods to their doom. Apollo is the first to fall, trapped by the music of the satyr whose horns now make him seem diabolical as he dances in the flames. Grover Underwood finds his roots in Gaea and his revenge in destruction.
Leo Valdez wants to burn the world to ashes. There's not a moment he's not on fire, his hair smouldering, his skin aglow. At his feet lies Hera, trussed up like a rodeo calf, bound by the power of the guardian Leo knows he deserved as a child. There is no Piper with her charmspeak to free the ex-queen; at least, Piper is by Leo's side as he blasts her with his searing flames. There's a smile on Leo's face that rivals even Annabeth's as he torches cities, razes acres and lights up the sky with plumes of smoke and columns of fire. His reasoning feels etched into his heart: the gods let Nico die. The gods let us down one time too many. And so he lets the flames go. Gaea stands behind him, her hand on his shoulder, proud and respectful. She knows that he secretly enjoyed starting the war with New Rome. He has fire powers; it's only natural, and that Octavian is enough to drive anyone mad. So, Leo Valdez finally makes his peace with Gaea.
Will Solace goes out like a light as the news of his beloved's death is announced. He lies, broken and silent, in Gaea's arms, tears streaming down his face. He stirs only for Nico's name, and his eyes turn slowly to whoever dared say it. He reaches out an arm, eyes turning black, leaching all the colour from the surroundings as his whisper echoes: there is no hope. Behind him stands Gaea, a tear of her own on her earthen cheek. She feels his pain, raw and fresh. But she takes some of it onto herself. Will Solace shares his grief with Gaea now.
And so they stand, eyes alight and expressions dark and triumphant, by the side of the goddess who did not want to let Nico die.
Gaea smiles.

Some of my favorite tropes in media
1. Found family
Welp. Why am I surprised?
In addition to a ton of platonic relationships, there's also a bang-on hilarity in each one of these groups.
Six of Crows (the progression in Kaz and Wylan's dynamic??? Nina and Inej being besties??? Jesper and Inej having a running joke of scheming face lol??? Matthias forgoing his prejudices to team up with Jesper and Kuwei???)
The Hargreeves siblings??? (We're not gonna talk about what's going on between Luther and Allison 💀 but the rest of them 🥺🥺🥺)
2. Ballroom dance scenes
Oh, to be twirling across the dancefloor in the arms of your partner (bonus points if it's your enemy💖) and you can't decide if your heightened breathing is due to the music's tempo or the 🌟tension🌟
Whyyyyyyy did we have to stop balls!?!?!? Whyyyyyyyy???? Are you telling me that we lost the opportunity to wear our most artful dresses and have a night of elegant dancing and food and it was replaced by nightclubs??? T_T
3. The sunshine character actually has problems.
Love, love, love it when the sunshine, always joking, always kind character opens up about their own issues and insecurities yet they don't stop being kind and don't lose their heart just because the world is going to hell
Prime examples: Ron Weasley (au contraire, HP fandom, this guy has one of the best characterizations in the books and y'all just sleep on him because you want your special ones so much), Leo Valdez (my boy repaired a whole dragon alone, dealt with losing his mom, was homeless and yet keeps the atmosphere light and happy and makes hilarious jokes T_T), Inej Ghafa (horribly traumatized, has done things to survive in a brutal world, deserves the world, and yet is so, so, so fiercely kind and compassionate and always there for her friends💖)
4. When the tough, scary one is soft for kids or animals
Nothing is more wholesome than watching a stone-cold badass softening towards a kid or adopting a baby animal or just showing love for their family (Five Hargreeves 🥺). Shows that they still have a bit of their heart unguarded wnd hopeful.
5. Wholesome friendships that just stay friendships + siblings being siblings.
My ace ass hates love triangles with a fiery passion and it's really tiring to see every friendship being shipped left and right or being pushed into love triangle *side-eyes CC*
Lucie Herondale and Cordelia Carstairs are my favorite parabatai duo and I need more content of their friendship and antics pleaseee. I need more of them being a chaotic duo.
Alastair and Cordelia are my favorite brother sister duo, just with the way they address each other and how Cordelia thought about killing him during the demon attacks in ChoG.
Percy Jackson and Grover Underwood. The guy sailed across the Bermuda Triangle to rescue his best friend.
Also the potential we lost with Hermione and Ginny because R*wling couldn't write more than one PoV -_-
But on a happy note, Ron and Harry are my favorite and I love these dorks so much. They really become brothers by the end *gross sobbing*
Aru and her Pandava sisters and the two braincells they share🤦‍♀️😂
Once more, the Hargreeves family going from strangers to dumbass chaotic family in TUA s2😂🤦‍♀️
6. Enemies-to-lovers
Bonus points if they're also academic rivals. Why is this trope not used more? We could explore some great themes on the shit education system.
No one? Fine I'll write a fic myself.
Also, enemies to lovers =/= abusive relationships. Keep that trash away from me where the love interests are manipulative, abusive towards their love interests and then later fall in love with them. My favorite progression goes like this:
Ugh pretentious ass, look at them==>ugh why are we working together?==>why do we work so well as a team!?==>goddammit why are they so nice!?==>I guess we're friends now==>what is this tension!?!==>*notices something pretty about them* uh oh. 😳😳😳
Prime examples: Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. Kallias and Alessandra from The Shadows Between Us. Jude and Cardan from TFOTA (I know they're toxic. Would not stan that relationship irl but I loved their development in the trilogy)
7. When the best friends go to an event as each other's date and are mutually pining over each other but are oblivious dumbasses.🤦‍♀️
Bonus points if other people mistake them for a couple and they can't even get out a proper explanation ;)
*whispers* Harry and Ron should've asked each other to the Yule Ball
8. More thoughtfully-written boys in YA
Please move on beyond the bad boy and broody, immortal, muscular warrior trope. Give representation to my PoC, neurodivergent, trans and fat boys. Give boys dark features (I promise they are as entrancing as blue eyes or blonde hair). Make them emotional, make them something other than stoic, make them like teenagers (and not adults playing teens). They deserve the world and well-written role models as much as girls do.
Prime example: Ron Weasley, Jesper, Wylan, Enrique and Hypnos from TGW, and Julian Blackthorn.
I could write essays for Ron but all I'll say is that r*wling did a good job by giving the role of emotional support (that's usually considered a feminine job) to a boy and made him funny and kind-hearted🥺
As for Julian, like I said before ruthless characters being soft for their family make me go T_T
9. Showing feminism with an equal society (as Tricia Levenseller does it), wholesome f/f and m/f friendships, normalizing the presence of LGBTQ people, without trashing men or femininity.
If you have to deliberately create a highly patriarchal society to show off your progressive views and badass female MC, then you're doing feminism wrong :)
Oops my saltiness leaked out in the end 😳

Things that bother me about Percabeth
Warning: this is going to be long and I'm not even sure if this will make sense. Also don't read this if you aren't open to criticizms of Percabeth.
Percabeth is a good ship, or at least has potential as one, but it has many legit flaws (this and this go into the flaws. By the way, go check out @takaraphoenix's Riordan crit) and I have some personal grievances. I'll write this out to understand my stance better because I need to get this off my chest.
I believe most people wouldn't agree with me on all this, but this post is entirely self-indulgent and I'm doing this for catharsis, so don't come at me. This isn't an objective analysis, just me trying to clear my thoughts. But feel free to share your opinions if you want.
Evolution in PJO
This is a pretty general point. I love the evolution of their dynamic in pjo. Their bickering, them opening up to each other and becoming so important to each other, the slow and steady buildup, it's great. Heck, I love slow burn. They have some good moments in pjo: Annabeth opening up to Percy on the zoo express, the scene with the sirens, Percy doing everything he did to save Annabeth in ttc, their conversation after Annabeth took the knife for Percy in tlo. (The underwater kiss is not one of my favourite moments, I'll come to that later.)
The romantic evolution, though, I'm not sure. I enjoyed it in ttc, there were small subtle hints like Aphrodite's scarf, or Aphrodite looking like Annabeth to Percy. But it became kind of tiring in botl onwards. Annabeth was extremely possessive and awful to Rachel. And in tlo things became a bit over-the-top.
I think Rick tried to establish them as the Most Important Person to each other. I don't like that. This is more apparent in HoO. I'll come to hoo later, but there is one instance of this in tlo: Percy seeing Annabeth in the Styx. Like one of the posts I've linked above says, it's shippy nonsense. It comes from the idea that one's romantic partner must be the most important. It doesn't make sense. I think Percy should have seen his mother in the Styx. It would make sense for Sally to be Percy's anchor, considering how much she means to him.
In short, their enemies-to-friends evolution was great, their friends-to-lovers evolution started out fine but became too much for me, and their friends-to-Most-Important-Person-to-each-other evolution was unnecessary and forced.
Luke
Luke and Annabeth's romantic subplot didn't need to exist. This isn't exactly Percabeth, but I'll say it here anyway. First of all, there's a seven year age gap, so Luke returning Annabeth's feelings is creepy. And it seems pretty unnecessary to me. It's also a bit of a mess. In tlt Annabeth blushes when Luke is around, and Luke says 'She's like my little sister.' In tlo Luke asks Annabeth if she loved him, and she says 'You were like a brother to me.' This part feels like Rick trying to add last-moment tension to Percabeth by making Luke a potential 'rival' to Percy. In the Staff of Hermes Percy says Annabeth had a crush on Luke, and as she got older, Luke had a crush on her too. Just ... Why?
They and Thalia were each other's first friends. Annabeth looked up to Luke and Luke was fond of Annabeth. That is enough reason for Annabeth to be hurt and for Luke to care about Annabeth. That is enough to set up their post-betrayal dynamic. The romance thing was completely unnecessary.
Rachel
I absolutely hate the way Annabeth treated Rachel. If there is one thing I despise about romantic subplots, it's justifying bitchiness with romantic jealousy. I guess it's okay to feel a little jealous or even possessive, and I can kind of see where Annabeth was coming from, but treating someone like shit because of that, especially in the middle of dangerous quests, is not okay. It's petty and immature. (It could be argued that Annabeth was mad because Rachel got to lead her quest, but let's be honest, she wouldn't have been that mad if it were anyone else. She specifically treated Rachel like that out of jealousy.) It was never called out and Annabeth never seemed to regret it. This bothers me so much. Fanfiction is a good coping mechanism, I suppose, but I'm here to complain about canon, not cope with it.
Speaking of Rachel, Perachel could have been a good ship. A demigod looking for a normal life and a mortal with clear sight. This elaborates on that pretty well. At the end of tlo it really felt like Rick had to get Rachel out of the way to make way for Percabeth.
Annabeth seems to be too demanding
Annabeth's attitude towards Percy bothers me sometimes. She's a good character and has a strong dynamic with Percy, but she's a bit tiring with regards to Percy (in a romantic sense; she's fine as his friend). I mean look at this quote from tlo:
I can't pretend I hadn't thought about Rachel. She was so much easier to be around than ... Well, than some other girls I knew. I didn't have to work hard, or watch what I said, or wrack my brain trying to figure out what she was thinking.
Percy feeling that way about Annabeth - his best friend of four years - just doesn't sit well with me. Percy straight up admits he's more comfortable with Rachel than with Annabeth.
There's more: Annabeth punching Percy when he asked who he should dance with in ttc, the way she treated Rachel, the way she behaved towards Percy regarding Rachel in botl, judo flipping him in moa. It's pretty tiring in general. Now that I think of it, this wasn't a thing before the romance showed up. Their dynamic was better in the earlier books in general.
Also personally I'm not a fan of Annabeth constantly calling Percy Seaweed Brain. This and this nicely sum up how I feel about that. Annabeth making fun of Percy's intelligence even after getting to know him makes no sense, especially as he was insecure about his intelligence. (And yes, I know she thought he was intelligent, as she said in the Demigod Files, but that doesn't cancel out the million times she called him stupid to his face.)
They became too couple coded
I've seen people say that Percabeth is better as friends than as lovers, and honestly I agree, and I've done some thinking to figure out why. I think it's because of the way they were written after they became a couple. They could have been fine as a couple, if they were written differently.
They started out not being able to stand each other, then gradually, they went through a lot together, got to know each other, learned to work together, and became a team. That was a great evolution, like I said before.
And like I also said before, everything I dislike about Percabeth showed up with the romance. Annabeth became catty and possessive. They became a couple. And it was as if the friendship wasn't there anymore, just the romance. They became like a cliche unreasonable girlfriend and clueless boyfriend. This is especially obvious in the beginning of Percy Jackson and the Staff of Hermes. Where's the friendship? Where's the comfortable bantering? Where's the known-each-other-for-years soundness? Hoo Percabeth just doesn't live up to pjo Percabeth at all.
(Also this is a personal bias of mine, but I'm partially romance repulsed. I can't stand cheesy romantic coded stuff. I only like lovers if they're also friends. So I guess I'm kind of pissed about Percabeth becoming so couple coded after becoming a couple.)
Their HoO dynamic
This is a related point. Like I said, hoo Percabeth doesn't live up to pjo Percabeth. All they care about is each other. They literally don't think about anyone else at all. Percy loses his memory and he remembers Annabeth. Why? Does Hera ship Percabeth? If he remembered anyone, it should have been his mom, like in the Styx. The only reason Percy remembered Annabeth, i.e Annabeth was made out to be more important to Percy than everyone else (including Grover and Tyson and Sally 'best person in the world' Jackson) is that she was his romantic partner. Again, it's shippy nonsense.
And there's this reveal that Annabeth had a crush on Percy all along. Are you kidding me? It completely retcons the enemies-to-friends development. Are you telling me that the Percabeth evolution in pjo where they learned not to hate each other was a lie? That Annabeth gradually opening up to Percy and coming to appreciate him was her acting out of a crush? I'm not believing that, no way.
I'm probably not making any sense, but my point is that Percabeth in hoo in cheesy and can't go one day without each other and people love it but I don't. It kind of messes up their previous dynamic, which is a shame because I liked pre-hoo Percabeth.
Rick seems to go overboard sometimes
I'm about to get a little controversial here. Many of the Percabeth posts in those tumblr screenshots going around social media are about the campers shipping Percabeth, or Arachne making Percabeth fanart, things like that. My theory is that part of the reason Percabeth is so popular is that the characters ship it. And Rick kind of goes overboard with that - not just with the in-universe shipping, with the ship itself.
Prime examples of going overboard are Percy seeing Annabeth in the Styx and remembering Annabeth when Hera took his memory, which imply that Annabeth was objectively the Most Important Person to Percy. I've already ranted about these above so moving on to the part about the in-universe shipping. Like I said, I'm not a fan of the underwater kiss. It's because of the situation involved. The campers just won a war and lost their friends and siblings, Clarisse just lost Silena, you'd think they'd have other things to care about than Percy and Annabeth kissing, at least for one day. And why did Arachne make fanart of that? How did she even know? There was also the matter of moving to New Rome - them wanting to move halfway across country to live together, away from New York, doesn't really make sense to me. This post elaborates on that and suggests better alternatives.
Of course, the author has complete control over the narrative, and the author wants you to believe they are making sense. And when the characters believe that too, it becomes harder for readers not to. When all the campers ship Percabeth, it's enough to convince half the readers to ship it too. (And of course, the pjo fandom has an unhealthy thing with canon ships.)
It's pretty much kept up by the fans
While we're at it, let's talk about the out-of-universe shipping. The fandom has always shipped Percabeth, partly just because they are the male lead and female lead of a series. Percabeth was set up to happen, so when Rick introduced Rachel, who actually made Percy feel good about himself and let him be himself around her, and whom Percy was interested in, he had to get her out of the way. I'm not sure I can explain it, but the Percabeth ending in the first series feels very fan service-y to me.
Platonic Percabeth vs romantic Percabeth
I think everything I've said above just explains why Percabeth worked better as friends. The had a great friendship arc and became two friends who know each other inside out, butt heads a lot but love and respect each other deeply. And then when the romance happened, Annabeth began to show these romanticized but actually toxic girlfriend stereotypes - being jealous and possessive, expecting Percy to read her mind and getting pissed when he can't, etc.
The fandom thinks those traits are okay, because they are normalised in society. People think that's how couples should work (it's not). And so the reasons I don't like Percabeth are the same reasons many people do. The date in the beginning of Staff of Hermes makes me cringe, because they were friends first and friends don't work like that. But no doubt there are many people who find it cute because society loves to romanticise the unreasonable girlfriend and clueless boyfriend trope. There are plenty of people who romanticise Annabeth judo flipping Percy or treating Rachel like shit, because things like that are normalised but I personally can't stomach them at all.
Anyway, those toxic traits come with the Percabeth romance as a package deal and there's no getting rid of them. That's why Percy and Annabeth worked better as friends, and why I feel things would be better if they just stayed friends. There was none of that tiring crap pre-romance. I can't stress this enough, I really loved their friendship in tlt or som. But when their dynamic evolved to romance, it messed up their friendship. There was a specific moment in botl when Percabeth began to feel off for me.
'She will calm down,' Chiron promised. 'She's jealous, my boy.'
'That's stupid. She's not... it's not like...'
Chiron chuckled. 'It hardly matters. Annabeth is very territorial about her friends, in case you haven't noticed. ...'
I don't know why this moment specifically, but this kind of marked a change for me. This is where Percabeth became seriously romantic, and I didn't like the related developments. This was the beginning of Annabeth's jealousy.
So what would I prefer?
I'll be honest, I shipped Percabeth for a while, probably because I love some friends-to-lovers. So I was going to make a list of things I'd change about Percabeth. I wanted to make some self-indulgent UAs (universe alterations) to fix the things I don't like. But then I started writing this thing and read up on other posts and stuff and I realised the list of things that bother me is huge and I could never make Percabeth work for me without messing everything up. So I just gave up shipping it entirely.
What I would prefer is an AU where Percabeth stays platonic forever (@elf-loving-dragon has been encouraging that idea as well). They were great as friends and I want that back. It would be so refreshing to have the male lead and female lead not end up together. Annabeth could end up alone, and still get her something permanent with her friends and camp. It would be so beautiful if something completely romance-free was specifically stated as permanent, because friendships in media deserve as much love as romance.
As for Percy, he could end up either alone or with Rachel. I don't ship him with anyone else rn. While I have made it obvious that I like Perachel, I still don't know if I actually ship it, and the idea of Percy ending up alone is not too bad either. (Update: I stan platonic Percabeth and qpp Perachel now.)
I promise I'm done now. Whew. If you've made it to the end of this long repetitive introspection, congratulations. If you agree, feel free to tell me, and if you want to argue, go ahead, I wouldn't mind listening to others' opinions. If you read this and hate me because of this just keep that to yourself. I have no patience for people who attack those who don't agree with their ship. K thanks, bye.

My thoughts on The Titan's Curse
Have I been promising this for like two weeks? Yeah :/. Sorry guys, things have been busy xd. This took me a while because this book was really awesome for me and I wanted to get everything I though in this one post so here we go guys.
1). Okay. But. The beginning was amazing. A good start to a book that hooked me right away. I'm really happy Grover was there too, I missed him for a lot of the second book TwT
2). Bianca. If you all saw my other posts about her, you know I have very mixed feelings towards her. And while I still feel she was selfish to join the hunters, I also saw sooome of her reasoning, and at least later in the book she does say she considered Nico in her desicion. I still don't like her but I also don't hate her.
3). Babey Nico Babey Nico Babey Nico
4). Percy loves Annabeth no I don't accept criticism on this.
5). Thalia and Percy's dynamic is really well written as sort of a frenemy relationship. I like the way Rick wrote them.
6). Zoe was annoying but I also was kind of sad she died because I wish there could have been more about her past. Maybe a mini book in the future? Until then, I guess I have to just read fanfiction TwT
7). Percy and Annabeth with matching grey streaks??? They're soulmates. Pls don't spoil because I don't remeber if they ever get together but if they don't I will feel lots of negative emotions -_-
8). Rachel Elizabeth Dare is wonderful, and I want to see more of her. I love just how she's just so unabashedly herself and I have no choice but to stan
9). Thalia joining the hunters at the end..... that caught me by surprise, but I think it is a good choice for her because imo the hunters seem like a good desicion because they just seem like a group where she will be understood and make new friends
10). Percy getting close to losing his shit when he thinks Annabeth is going to join the hunters too further solidifies my Percabeth theory fight me
11). Athena better back tf off 'i dOn'T apProVe of yOur friEndsHip wiTh mY daUghTer'
12). Percy calls the Ophiotaurus "Bessie" and that lives rent-free in my mind
So overall I did love this book, it was gripping and I remeber why this was my favorite when I first read it as a kid. Good characters, well-paced plot, and twists that I enjoyed. 13/10 I reccomend.

Annabeth Chase breakdown for @a-mountain-girl
Feelings towards her: Highkey in love with her. I got attached to all the pjo characters as a kid, but Annabeth as this badass female with brains and wit was just so appealing. Easily top three fav women in the series.
Romantic ships: Percy is the top choice but I could be convinced on Reyna as well, other than that no one.
Non-romantic otp: at first I couldn’t decide between Grover and Thalia. But badass female friendships appeal so much to me I’m gonna go Thalia.
Unpopular opinion: um, I really hate when she underestimates characters in ways that are written to show her off as cool or them not as much. It’s like they have to prove themselves to her which is weird. (that’s more of a rick thing but still)
Liked to have happened: I really like her general arc, so not too many complaints. I wish we had more with her family to see if things changed or perhaps gotten to see how she felt after leaving Tartarus.

Can you do the famous reunion for fem!percabeth? I love the way you write! Lol no one at the Roman camp knows Percy’s a les but none of them are surprised bc she screams gay energy
um ABSOLUTELY ANON???? i had a lot of fun writing this and thinking about how it would go. i think the main thing that shifts with this genderbend is Annabeth’s attitude towards Percy and how Percy reacts to it — Annabeth is kind of the first person she really felt close enough to open up to especially as they grew up together, but most strikingly because she’s a girl and she’s never really had a friend she could tell her secrets to. she had Grover but it’s hard to be emotional with a guy friend, especially when you’re figuring out who you are and developing your first real crushes. and I think the same goes for Annabeth — she had Luke as someone she could look up to, but she doesn’t really have the social cues for a real friendship outside of the stereotypical girls tease boys and have best girl friends, so I definitely think she would be closer to fem!percy especially at first. she’s still her usual tough self and is still afraid of letting her in but she’s just the tiniest bit less guarded. this would absolutely affect how their dynamic changes overtime so I kind of approached this looking at how it might change with this different setup, and took a few things from the original and changed others. hope you like it :^)
Read on AO3
In the time Percy was gone, Annabeth found her attachment to her intensifying more than she expected. It was normal to worry for her; to miss her. But this was different. This was like someone cut a hole in her, and she hated it. Clearly it wasn’t enough to make her fall for her best friend (she’s not complaining now — but the soul crushing not knowing was something else). No, now the universe was tearing them apart just when she’d finally found something solid.
That’s when she sees her. She smiles as Annabeth catches her eye — her beautiful green eyes — and she’s all Annabeth can see. The rest of the world goes blurry and she’s paralyzed. She’s worried if she even moves an inch that she’ll break the illusion, and Percy will be gone.
If it’s possible, she looks even more beautiful than the last time Annabeth saw her. Her skin is sun-kissed, bringing out the freckles dusting her face, and her hair has grown, jet black strands reaching just past her shoulders, bangs parted and pinned behind her ears. She looks older. Percy smiles, biting her lip.
Reyna speaks, but it barely registers in Annabeth’s mind, the words ringing through her ears with little recognition; something about Jason. Her legs carry her towards Percy, and Percy’s rushing into her arms; in that instant, they’re the only two people who have ever existed, and ever will exist. She melts into Percy’s embrace like it’s the only thing she’s ever known, and finally kisses her. It’s reckless; everything they’re not. She could stay like this forever if the universe would let her. Percy grabs at her waist, pulling Annabeth tightly against her, just wanting to be close and feel her presence.
She’s reminded of her surroundings as the world floods back in, and likewise her emotions from the past few months comes bubbling up. She said she wasn’t going to leave her. She said they were a team. Just when she was finally starting to believe that Percy was permanent. Someone who would fight alongside her no matter what. They survived certain death before, and they could do it again — but she can’t do it alone. She can feel the tears welling up in her eyes and damn it, she’s stronger than that. Most of all, she’s angry. Not 100% rationally, because she still doesn’t know what happened to Percy or why she was gone, but it’s racing through her veins and sparking a fire. Without a concrete intention, but a burst of frustration, she grabs Percy’s wrist and flips her over her shoulder, leaving her stunned on the ground, dust settling. There’s some commotion from the crowd surrounding them, but Annabeth is way too focused to acknowledge it.
Before Percy can get enough of a grasp on what’s happened to stand up, Annabeth’s there at her throat, whispering to her with grit: “If you ever leave me again,” a tear drops onto Percy’s cheek, “I swear to all the gods…”
The adrenaline in her body plateaus, and she feels a pang of guilt — she’d hate to hurt her — but Percy doesn’t seem to be hurt, or even upset for that matter. “Hey,” Percy reaches up to wipe the tears forming on Annabeth’s face. “Message received,” she cracks a smile, then, sincere: “I missed you too.”
Annabeth extends her hand to Percy, and it feels like she’s 12 again, picking her up after a duel. Of course, it’s different now. Instead of wanting to relentlessly tease her, she has the overwhelming urge to kiss her again. She doesn’t; it doesn’t seem appropriate when there’s so much to be done and they’ve already disrupted enough. Percy’s less concerned with that: she tilts Annabeth’s chin up to kiss her again, only briefly before they’re interrupted as — Jason clears his throat.
“Okay. So. Yeah. It’s good to be back.”

PJO/HOO Headcanon
Annabeth Chase does have a super power /ability. She can communcate nonverbally through mental conversations with anyone she makes out with for a full 10 seconds or more. Percy and Annabeth originally thought they could do it because of their times in Tartarus, where she developed this ability after the Mark of Athena. But when Annabeth made out with Piper at Percy's 23rd birthday party (after drunken Percy had egged them on of course) she realized she could start hearing when Piper was thinking about her. And Piper thought about her quite a bit after that party. Don't get me wrong, they were still with their boyfriends. Jason had come out as bisexual to Piper (and everyone that night) and they had been closer than ever. Piper had been realizing she also was a little queer ever since that party. Let me explain what happened...
To confront Annabeth, and talk about her feelings with her closest pals, Piper organized a girls night/sleepover with the girls from the Seven + Reyna. They all dressed up and ended up having a lot of fun doing each other's makeup, playing board games (which Annabeth rocked at because of her newfound power). Somehow it seemed that Piper was doing especially well at the board games too! They played some taboo at the end, which turned out really easy for Piper and Annabeth! Reyna and Hazel were a bit shocked at how easily Piper was guessing the words when Annabeth had the card. They were all shocked honestly. Later, they all got into their pajamas and watched a new movie. They wanted to watch Spiderman : Homecoming, but Annabeth was pretty scared of the spiders. They decided against an old classic Tristan McLean movie, in favor of Deadpool 2. They all really enjoyed it, and Reyna laughed a lot during the movie! By the end of the movie, Hazel was asleep on the couch, and Reyna had drunk so much she was practically passed out. After giving Reyna some water and tucking her in bed in the master bedroom, Piper and Annabeth went to the other bedroom in the Manhattan apartment they had booked for girls night.
Annabeth knew, that this was the part of the night when her and Piper would talk about their boyfriends, update each other on all the gossip from Camp Half-Blood/Camp Jupiter, and talk about all the new projects Annabeth was working on. They did this at all their sleepovers. But the past month since the Percy's birthday party had felt odd. Her and Piper had started the become distant, but tonight things felt different. For the first time in forever, they felt in-sync. Annabeth had attributed that to the alcohol, but she really wasn't sure.
As they got ready for bed in their double bed bedroom, Piper got them some waters. They had drunk quite a bit at the beginning of the night, but the movie had really sobered them up. They were still feeling their connection though and decided to play one last game for the night. They decided to play truth or drink, but with the waters in an effort to finish sobering up before the end of the night. It wasn't too late, only about 1am since the girls (or should I say young women, at 22 and 21 years old respectively) started early that night. Annabeth felt a bit uneasy, but she was excited to share things again with her best friend of many years.
They started with camp gossip and work projects, after realizing that the boyfriend talk might be a little more serious. The two couples had recently gotten a lot closer since the night of Percy's party. Annabeth attributed Jason and Piper's closeness to be a result of Jason's coming out to everyone that night. He didn't want people to think he didn't like Piper any less because he liked guys too. That was her rationale. It made sense too, also because of the kiss. Annabeth had felt sparks that night kissing Piper for Percy's benefit, could Piper had felt something too?
After drinking a full glass of water each with the first two rounds of gossip, the conversation turned towards the boyfriends. Annabeth had to use the bathroom, so she excused herself. While washing her hands, she realized that her and Piper had subconsciously pushed their beds together for the night. She was feeling nervous, and didn't know what would happen between her and Piper! She locked the bathroom and sat down to think.
Meanwhile, Piper was using the other bathroom in the apartment to wash herself up. She had planned the night to hang out with all her girlfriends, but knew she needed to clear something up with Annabeth. The past month had felt really weird since Percy's party. After Jason came out to everyone as bi, she got much closer with her boyfriend. Later that week she came out as bisexual herself, but only in secrecy to Jason. The only other person who figured it out was Percy.
She thought back to a couple weeks ago, when Percy and Jason were joking around about their relationships in the Big House. Percy had joked about him being into more than one gender as well and they should've just made their weekly meetings a bisexuals only club. Jason and Piper were stunned- how did Percy know Piper was bisexual? Percy clarified he was coming out as pansexual, but that he had an inkling about Piper too. He loved his girlfriend, but he also realized he was also into other genders after his party and everything with Grover's girlfriend Juniper.
Typically the two power couples spent Sunday lunches together. But Annabeth was staying overnight at Mount Olympus to work on a project. She had missed Percy's big announcement. Piper smiled. She really liked Annabeth, and wondered if Percy knew if his girlfriend liked girls or not. Piper had enjoyed that kiss at Percy's party, but felt like Annabeth was totally turned off by it. She realized she had spent 20 minutes washing off her makeup while reminiscing! She quickly wiped off the rest of her face, and went to their bedroom to check on Annabeth. She wondered if Annabeth was worried.
Annabeth was worried. Annabeth was worried about her sexuality. She was worried about her relationship with Percy, who didn't know she liked girls. She was worried about Jason, who would be mad if he knew she was upset and confused about liking more than one gender. And worst of all, she was worried about Piper. She didn't know what Piper would say. Was she using the younger woman when Percy made them kiss at his party? Would Piper be disgusted by her sexuality? No of course not. But she was worried that Piper wouldn't want to be her friend anymore. Things had been weird for a while, and she worried most of all that her conciously drifting away from Piper and Jason would make them hate her.
This repeated thought was interrupted by a knock on the door. Piper was there! Piper loud whispered to Annabeth "Annabeth, are you okay!? It's almost 2:30, we should probably get to bed!" Annabeth thought for a second. Or a few, it felt like an eternity to make this decision. She replied softly "One sec, my period just started that's all." It was a lame excuse but what could she do?
Piper knew Annabeth was lying. There was no way her period had just started. They had in sync since the fall after the prophecy with Gaia. And it was only September 20th, their periods usually came in the middle of the months. Piper had just finished her period the night before, she figured Annabeth had too. But they again, she hadn't seen Annabeth in quite a while, so she might be telling the truth.
Piper knocked again. "Can I join you in the bathroom then? I wanted to talk to you about Percy." She DID want to talk to Annabeth about Percy, and the comments he had made at the Sunday lunch a couple weeks prior. But she also wanted to talk about their friendship, and their kiss from Percy's party. And how everything tonight seemed to be going so well! She heard Annabeth stand up and ask her to step away from the doorway.
Annabeth opened the door and quickly let Piper in. She felt bad about lying about her period, which she strangely had not gotten yet. Percy and her had made sure to use protection, and Annabeth was on the pill too, so nothing could happen there. But she realized it was a bit late this month. Piper quickly fished out a tampon from her back pocket, as she realized Annabeth didn't have one. "Do you still need this? I notice there's no blood anywhere."
Annabeth laughed nervously. "It's gonna come soon, the cramps have already started." She wasn't sure if her stomach pains were cramps or just nerves, but either way she thought it best to stay in the bathroom. She told Piper, and Piper agreed. They sat back down on the soft hotel towels Annabeth laid out for them. Piper asked her "So, why do you think it could be nerves?"
To be continued...

for auld lang syne
percy jackson fic debut! I figured I’d have to post eventually. shoutout to @annabethlancaster22 for not laughing and @bananannabeth, since I practically studied her format and writing style to learn how to write fanfic, and she’s basically my inspiration. here goes nothing!!!
“Are you just going to sit here all night?”
Percy takes another slow swig of his beer from his spot on the couch and raises his eyes to meet Piper’s. “You know of anything better to do?” “For Christ’s sakes Percy, liven up a little- it’s a party,” she says, her hand on her hip.
A pretty crappy party at that, in Percy’s opinion. The flat is full of college freshmen who are too loud and too drunk and way too promiscuous- he can’t even get up for a drink without being surrounded by handsy eighteen year olds looking for his phone number and a New Year’s kiss.
He’d left Leo on the dance floor- the DJ was playing a resoundingly five-dollars-an-hour set list of hits from 2002- and retreated to the dimly lit living room, where two guys were discussing football fixtures, and a young couple was making out in front of a small television showing live footage from Times Square.
“I think I’ll just chill out over here,” he says, as Piper rolls her eyes and heads off to find Jason.
The two guys are still talking about football, but the couple have managed to break loose of one another for just about long enough to go dancing. It’s way too stuffy in the room, and Percy is just about to get up and find some fresh air when somebody flops down onto the sofa beside him.
Annabeth sinks back into the cushions, pushing her mussed hair up off her sweaty forehead- she’s clearly been dancing- and Percy is ridiculously aware of the very limited space between her thigh and his. Out of breath, she sighs dramatically and turns to face him.
“Remind me again why we’re not in a bar downtown?”
“We promised Nico we’d come to his new boyfriend’s party,” Percy answers, glancing through the doorway to where Will Solace stands chatting to a girl with fiery red hair, one arm slung casually around Nico, who looks unusually cheerful.
“Oh yeah,” Annabeth mumbles, sounding newly dejected. Her white shirt rides up her stomach a little as she leans back in her seat, and Percy swallows hard.
He doesn’t know exactly when he fell in love with her, but he remembers the moment he realised it as though it were yesterday. They were sitting on the beach in Montauk during spring break of senior year, just the two of them and their old friend Grover, and she had grains of sand stuck to her ankles and sea salt gathering at her eyebrows and hairline, and the sun was beating down and turning her hair to spun gold. She reached up to release it from her barrette, and that was it. Lightning strike. All his pining, blushing, hopeless daydreaming and awkward flirting, all his inching away and inching closer, all Piper’s sly smirks and winks and entirely unhelpful comments stem from that one moment with her hair clip.
He’s been utterly fucked ever since.
He doesn’t realise he’s been staring at her midriff until she leans forward suddenly and sits up straight.
“I’m not drunk enough,” she announces, and gestures towards his beer. “Can I have some of that?”
He’s about to argue that the slight slur in her voice, her previous position on the couch- Annabeth rarely slouches- and the acute flush in her cheeks indicate that she’s already had plenty to drink, but she leans over and plucks the bottle from his hand before he has the chance and takes a long swallow.
“You know, I really hate New Year’s,” she declares after she comes back up for air.
“Oh yeah? Why’s that?” he asks, somewhat disinterestedly- she is drunk, after all, and not at her most eloquent- as he delicately takes the bottle from her hand and places it on the coffee table, well out of her reach.
“People are just so full of shit, you know?” she continues. “Everyone thinks they’re going to be so good, and accomplish everything they hoped to in the new year. But nobody ever tries past January. People rarely work for the things they want, and then they have the nerve to be disappointed when they don’t get them. It’s so fucking stupid. Bugs me to shit”.
Percy pauses for a long while. He’s not sure what he expected her to say, but it certainly wasn’t that. He contemplates his answer, rather unsuccessfully, but in the end it doesn’t matter- their conversation is interrupted.
“Hey there, Kelp Head. Long time, no see,” his cousin Thalia says with a grin. He stands up to hug her, and she greets Annabeth in turn, asking her how she’s finding the final year of university.
Annabeth starts off on a rant about exam format, but Percy isn’t really listening. He’s too busy thinking about what she mentioned earlier, about people never working for the things they want to happen. He’s pretty sure if he asked her now she wouldn’t even remember what she’d said, but he can’t help feeling like it’s the truth. His truth.
By the time he’s snapped back to reality the room has filled with people waiting for the countdown, and Piper has appeared at his side, Jason standing behind her with a hand resting on her shoulder. She digs Percy in the ribs and grins.
“Glad to see you’re standing up,” she jokes.
He glances at the clock on the TV- twenty seconds until midnight. Annabeth links his opposite arm with hers and begins counting down with the others.
Percy’s thoughts race at a million miles an hour. He’s liked Annabeth, loved her, even, since the end of high school. That’s- what- three, four years? And in all that time he’s never made a single move that might lead her to believe he had feelings for her. Not one gesture to suggest he could be thinking of her in a more than platonic way.
“10, 9…”
Maybe he’s only thinking like this because he’s drunk. But she’s drunk too. If he goes for it, she might not even remember. It’s not exactly security, but it’s something. If it backfires he could always pretend that he was too drunk to remember.
“6, 5…”
It’s New Year’s Eve, so it’s not like it would ruin their friendship or anything, right? Would it?
“3, 2…”
Fuck it, he decides, and as the ball drops and the clock strikes midnight, he catches her by the waist and kisses her like he’s been dying to do since he was seventeen years old.
Her lips are soft and her mouth is sweet and her eyelashes brush the top of his cheekbones.
It’s over almost as quickly as it started, but when he pulls away Annabeth’s eyes are wide and her jaw is slack. She looks like someone’s dumped ice water over her head, wide awake and stone cold sober, and Percy is so horrified by her expression that he turns to grab Piper and kiss her too in an attempt to pass it off as a totally shit-faced friendship thing.
Before he can, however, Annabeth snatches the back of his t-shirt and swings him around to her, burying her fingers in his hair and pulling him back to her mouth.
He doesn’t quite realise the gravity of the situation until the next morning when he wakes up in her bed, her bare body pressed against his, where she shoots him a little smile and causes all the wires in his brain to short circuit as she tells him that maybe, just maybe, New Year’s isn’t so bad after all.
(And when she leans across to kiss him, he doesn’t need to open his eyes to see the fireworks).
yaaay happy new year everyone! feedback/constructive criticism is much appreciated :))

Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Ship of the Dead, by Rick Riordan
The third book in the Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard trilogy. Finished it a month ago, but I just got the review done.
Read on Goodreads
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
FOR THE SUPER NON-SPOILERY AND THE NON-SPOILERY PEOPLE: This is the third book. Can't say much. Here: The Sword of Summer
FOR THE SPOILERY PEOPLE: Oh. My. Dear. Gods. Let's talk about my thoughts pre-book. I got this book maybe two days after it came out--in my defence, it was a busy time in my life. Marching band is a big deal. Marching band ending in my senior year of high school is a bigger one. After marching band, school got in the way. I wasn't able to read the book. A sad life, I know. I was looking forward to this book for forever at that point. (Where "forever" = about 1 year) But then. A four day weekend was coming up. It was time. I picked up the book. And I read it. Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Ship of the Dead is an end-book. The last book. It's the last book in the Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard trilogy. I've read three other end-books by Rick Riordan: The Last Olympian, The Serpent's Shadow, and The Blood of Olympus. The Last Olympian is by far my favourite of the three. In fact, it's high up on the favourite-end-books list. It's amazing. TLO SPOILERS:  The entire thing is dedicated to the battle that has been built up for four books. The battle is amazing. There was the right amount of death. The ending was near perfect. I loved it. END SPOILERS To be honest, I don't remember much of The Serpent's Shadow. If I wasn't on a rereading ban, I'd probably reread that series. And then, Blood of Olympus. We all have feelings about that book. Mine aren't the best. Not the worst, but not the best. The point is, I didn't know what to think about this book. Was it going to be a good end-book? Would it wrap up everything? What the heck was going to happen? Percy Jackson is my all-time favourite character in any Rick Riordan book in the history of Rick Riordan books. When I finished the second book, Annabeth ended the book by saying it was time to meet Percy.I remember thinking that this meant Percy was probably going to make a cameo at the beginning, teach Magnus a couple things, and be on his way. AND I WAS RIGHT. Some people I knew thought that he'd be throughout the book, and they were angry because of it, but no. Nope. Personally, I'd love more books with Percy as the main character. I know he needs a well-deserved break, but he's still my favourite. I'd even go for a series that just follows his current life. Anyway, I loved the beginning. And we finally got to know what Percy's baby sister's name is! Estelle! It feels like such a difference from the other names in these books, and it caught me off guard at first, but I actually really like that name. And he's so excited to be an older brother! I love Percy. Moving on, fast-forward to looking through Randolph's place. We get to see more of Alex's sass, which I love. The whole cast of characters in this series is fantastic. I didn't really think much of anyone other than the main four until this book, but now I love all of them. Which I'll get into later. Spoiler for The Shadowhunter Chronicles: Anyway, so originally, when naming Magnus Magnus, Rick asked Cassandra Clare if he could use the name Magnus, since Cassie also has a character named Magnus in her books. And Magnus gets together with Alec. In these books, Magnus gets together with Alec. I don't ship either, but I love the parallels. When we meet Sam, we find out that it's Ramadan, and I think this is really cool for a children's book to touch on. It also shows how powerful Sam is. She's an amazing fighter, and she can do all of it while going through the month of Ramadan. Talk about a powerful character. She's incredible. Sam has been struggling with her shape-shifting and resisting Loki when he tries to control her. Magnus says to her,"You'll find a way. A way that works for you." And it's never really mentioned in the book if she does. It's highly implied, shown in pages 363 and 373 (hardback, first edition) when she resists Loki. I do kind of wish we got a line about figuring it out, though. Chapter nine: I Become a Temporary Vegetarian. This needs a shout-out because this was definitely one of my favourite moments of the book. Aegir asks if there are any dietary restrictions. Sam imediately says that it's Ramadan. Aegir: "I see. Sorry. Yes, I don't think dwarves are halal. I'm not sure about elves." And I love this, because Sam then says, "They're not, either. In fact, it's Ramadan which means I need to break my fast in the company of dwarves and elves, rather than eating them or being around anyone who does eat them. It's strictly forbidden." Conclusion: Sam is amazing. But it gets better: Magnus claims he's a vegetarian and Alex claims he has green hair. Green hair of course means that he can't eat dwarves or elves. There are so many other funny moments and lines I wish I could highlight on, but I don't have the time to type all of them out. When Magnus challenges Loki to a flyting, Loki refuses. This made me so excited. It didn't occur to me that he might refuse. Probably predictable, but I was excited for the plot twist. Very, very excited. Then a couple pages later it turns out they're having a flyting and I could never describe the disappointment that arose from that. I have to say though, Magnus' speech had me kind of speechless. And embarrassed. I really liked it. I'm a sucker for friendship stuff, and it made me feel. In the end, we get a phone call between Magnus and Annabeth. This next bit contains spoiler's for Riordan's Trials of Apollo series. ToA and MCGA take place at the same time. In The Dark Prophecy, Apollo joins up with Leo and Calypso, they go through some times, and then the book ends with Apollo meeting (waking up) Grover Underwood. I admittedly don't remember too much, but that's what I think is a good summary. So, I don't know about you guys, but Grover coming back to reality seems pretty good to me. I missed him. So, when Annabeth seemed to be crying, you have no idea how badly I wanted the third ToA book. What happened? What's the bad news? Gods of Olympus I need to know. It was intense over on my end when I read that chapter. END SPOILERS Magnus and Alex opened the mansion for homeless kids in need, and I thought that that was incredibly noble and true to Magnus' character. I loved it. All in all, the book was good, I'm not sure where I'd place it with the other books, though. The first was my favourite, then maybe this one? I really liked getting to know the characters in this book. However, as a series ending, it wasn't the strongest. I expressed earlier how worried I was that it would be a bad ending, and it definitely wasn't the best I've ever read. I think major battles should feel major--not a couple pages long. Also, every Riordan book ends with a huge meet-and-greet with the gods at the end. I've read it so many times, I'm ready for something new. There must be some other way to end these books. A lot of our characters develop in this book, or we get to know them better, and I thought it was incredible. Here's some highlights and thoughts: Alex: She seems to be a lot happier in this book, and her relationship with Sam is strong The piece of evidence I have on me right now is on page 168, where Alex is texting Sam because she wouldn't just leave Sam on the boat without updating their cellphone plans and making sure they're able to text at all times. Alex even says, "Well duh. Gotta keep in touch with my sister." Maybe it's small, but as someone who is close to her sibling, it means a bit more to me. Also, her relationship with Magnus went through some major developments. Most of it was pretty embarrassing for me, and I really don't have much to say about it. Speaking of Alex, she has a lot of moments where it seems like she's forcing gender identity into the reader's face. I think that this is good. This is a children's book, and it's good to introduce kids to these things, because they're reallyimportant, to some more than others. It may even help out someone who's reading the book. It's also important to just educate the audience as a whole. And if you're wondering how I'm deciding to use which set of pronouns, I use the pronouns that match the section of the book I'm talking about, and if I'm talking about a generalization, I use she/her pronouns because that's when Alex said to do in the second book. TJ: He cannot back down from a fight. This is why he must fight Hrungnir, and we get to know a lot about him. We got a glimpse of what his life was like and how he came to be involved in the war. It was glimpses, but it's also a huge deal. Mallory: First, we learned how she died, then we learned who her godly parent is (Frigg, only the queen of the Aesir), where she is told that she's the key to retrieving Kvasir's Mead. Mallory then kills all the thralls, which of course gets them a step closer to getting the mead. That's a really short version of it all, but it made me from hating her character to liking her, and I was impressed. I still don't understand why Magnus wants to call her Mack, though. Halfborn: We start learning about Halfborn when he tells Magnus that they're heading towards the places that Mallory and Halfborn died. It gets worse as the crew heads towards Fläm, and it's revealed that that is Halfborn's hometown. Sixty pages later, we learn that Halfborn wanted to get out of Fläm--he wanted to be known. Be famous. Then, later on in the book, Fläm gets insulted, and Halfborn was not having it. He has a rather one-sided conversation about it with Magnus, and it was really nice to have a bit of closure to Halfborn's mini get-to-know-him arc. Halfborn's not my favourite, but at least I can respect him as a character now that he actually is one. I was really happy to know that we were getting to know his story as well (because this was before I knew we were getting to know everyone's stories.)

chiron is also cast as poseidon so like he runs into the camp scene after a quick change and says “i hoofed it here as quick as i could!”
last day of summer happens and w/e its cute but whAT REALLY MATTERS IS LUKES BETRAYAL: okay so the music slows and goes into the minor key and percys like “we still dont know whos working w chronos :/” lukes like “yeah it sucks” and he starts singing about how he doesnt trust the gods and how the gods hate them and how they need to take over the world and put the gods in their place--he and percy do their handshake fist-to-the-chest thing and luke is serious and percy does it but hes v confused and it Hurts. this is the first time in the show that luke sounds just Bitter and Angry instead of jokingly deprecating and its quite the effect
THE DARK GOOD KID REPRISE
“ill do anything, i dont care if i hurt anyone, it doesnt pay to be a good kid, a good kid, a good son" GOD IT HURTS luke has so much pain and i feel so bad for him like yeah hes evil but,,, hes had a hard life
annabeth comes in and DISARMS LUKE but PSYCH luke has a small switchblade and STABS PERCY IN THE BACK (bc they cant use scorpions onstage)
percybeth moment interrupted by clarisse’s loud coughing and grover
percys like “we cant just sit here and wait for our parents to fix things.”
“the gods will say we’re impertinent” “we are impertinent” goddamn that symmetry
“are we ever gonna once have it easy?” my poor poor kids
percy- “feeling ready” annabeth- “feeling stoked” grover- “feeling queasy”
THE SEA DOESNT LIKE TO BE RESTRAINED
bring on the monsters is just a Good song
also hey if you got to the end of this, congrats! i have a ltm audio and either in a message or in an off-anon ask and ill hook u up

My thoughts on The Lightning Thief
So I decided to re-read the Percy Jackson series is preparation for the Disney+ adaptation, and I haven’t read it since I was 12. I kinda liveblogged a few reactions but now that I’ve finished it and I’m ready to start Sea of Monsters, I thought I should give my thoughts on the first one UwU.
1). I really thought that Percy’s devotion to his mom was very refreshing. Often times parents are completely written off in books, or there is very little focus on them. However I thought it was really sweet to see how much Percy cared and how strong their bond was, no matter how hard Percy could be to take care of at times.
2). Gabe is very, very well written imo. I have never hated a character this much since Dolores Umbridge. The way he’s shown to be so sleazy and awful and abusive, and how terrible he is to Percy and Sally, it really made me want to fight him. Especially with how sweet and genuine Sally is and how dare he treat her that way???
3). Grover and Percy’s friendship??? Yes. Sure, in the first couple chapters Percy dips on Grover and isn’t the best, but the way they are such close friends and how well they accent each other, what with Percy’s courage and Grover’s shyness. I honestly love “opposites but best friends” dynamics. Also the fact that they’re both so loyal to each other and their friends.
4). Annabeth is a very cool character to me. And not just because she is basically my half-sister lol. I guess I just don’t read very many female characters who are like her? Like very smart, analytical, good fighters, but also don’t have that whole “i’M nOt LikE tHe otHer giRLs” thing. It’s a breath of fresh air. And I think it’s also important that she’s not all buddy-buddy with Percy right away and that trust needs to be earned, because too often characters in books are best friends immediately because the author is too lazy to write a developing friendships or just don’t care enough to try.
5). I love how they try to paint Hades as the bad guy but then they get down to the Underworld and he’s all “bro why would I want a war the AMOUNT of PAPERWORK man I just wanna live with my wife and my dog.” I kinda like that subversion of expectations I guess haha. And yeah sure he did technically try to kill them, but they barged into his territory, accused him of thievery, honestly I’d do the same thing.
6). Ares. He’s an interesting character, that’s for sure, but I don’t know if his motives made sense to me. I guess it felt a bit like a copout, but at the end of the day I did think he was just as good a villain as any other. Or maybe just antihero idk.
7) BRO that plot twist with Luke I TOTALLY forgot about that lol. I think it really shows how manipulative and cunning he is and I know he gets worse throughout the series. I think it also really sets up for how cutthroat he is and how he gave a 12 year old shoes that would drag him to the deepest pit of hell and when that didn’t work he set a venomous scorpion on Percy. It shows he will stop at nothing to reach his goal.
8). I think Percy’s feelings towards Poseiden are completely valid, and it was interesting to read his inner turmoil about wanting to help his father but also being angry at him for not being around and leaving his mom. It made him feel like a real person, because I know that there are probably lots of kids reading these books that come from similar situations.
9).As an ADHD person myself, I think it’s awesome that Rick writes his characters as heroes and that their ADHD is a good thing. Like it’s their battle reflexes. I think it sends a good message that you can be a hero no matter what and I find that beautiful.
So overall: I really enjoyed re-reading this! The character dynamics, and how it sets up for a sequel, really engaged me and I can’t wait to start Sea of Monsters UwU

Hi C!!! It's meeee
Anyway I don't know why but I just kinda want to put this out in the world. You got me on Jercy (I'm not kidding I hated Jercy before you) but Percabeth is my OG ship like they started me ok fanfics and they're like my first real ship period. And I hate all the hate Annabeth gets because I really love her so I just wanted to ask you if you could go more in depth with why you aren't big on her/Percabeth please
Love you!! ❤❤
Hi my Gretch seeing your username (on any of the platforms) makes me forever and eternally happy. Okay onto this beautiful, intense ask:
First things first: I love Annabeth. Like Annabeth as a character? wonderful, incredible, unreal. She is so versatile and full of so many things that make us human and I see her character and character arc as a complex web full of intricacies and weaknesses (yes i said web on purpose).
My favourite things about her:
1. She always has a goal, whether it be long term or, I'm just trying to stay alive in this second. For people like me who kind of go through life on vibes and a vague sense of what they want it is awing to read about and meet people who have solid, planned goals that they live, breathe, and perform by.
2. She is proud of her friends. Since her fatal flaw is pride it is very easy to see the downfall but there is also an upside in that she uses that well of pride as an extension of her and it reflects on others. We know she is proud of Percy, and grover, and Thalia, and why Luke’s betrayal hit so hard for her
3. She continues to break stereotypes. Not just as the dumb blonde (which was admittedly a big thing at the time of the book’s release) but also in her being a girl who saves herself, who goes on the dangerous quests, who isn’t helpless. I never had a lack of female role models in my life but adding Annabeth to the mix only did me more good.
4. She thinks things through: I am kind of impulsive when it comes to certain aspects in my life and I have some thought process for other parts but Annabeth is not impulsive. As much as she has ADHD, in which impulsivity is fairly common, she doesn’t present with it. And it’s refreshing and exciting to see this character that thinks through plans and decisions and tries to predict the outcome, not only so she can change it if need be but also to prepare herself for what is to come. Narratives (especially at the time of those books) were full of impulse and quick decisions and always being on the spot. Hell Percy was exactly this kind of narrtator. And while I love dit because I mean what ten year old doesn't love fast-paced intense excitement? it was so truly wonderful to read about someone who thought further. It allowed you to connect to the next page, chapter, book.
5. She is a complete badass. And I love it. I love badass women. I could never get enough of them and I think they should rule the world. And I love smart people. I love them. Smartness, intelligence, is so attractive to me. Because it means you have passion, and the ability to think beyond your surroundings. Annabeth Chase is hella smart.
What I've been having a crisis over for the last few years is Percabeth. It is summed up most accurately here but just to continue my thought:
Rick changed the percabeth dynamic so much in HOO that it became almost unrecognisable. I think in the bid to have this whole, everyone is a couple and everyone deserves someone (which boosted Leo’s narrative but was also the cause of great conflict in everyone else’s narrative expect percabeth) he forgot to make them friends. And that was the basis of percabeth. It was the reason percabeth were so godsdamn cute in PJO. Because they were friends who ended up becoming a couple. In HOO they were just a couple. And it sucked out the life of their friendship so that we could only focus on their relationship.
And unfortunately it is Annabeth’s narrative that really brings this home for multiple reasons (all of which we can blame Rick for):
1. This is the first time we got other points of view beside Percy which means everyone’s flaws were much more obvious. Annabeth’s fatal flaw specifically was really played (the entire reason she went on that Mark of Athena quest; why  they landed up in Tartarus). it made focusing on her harder especially because Percy’s Fatal flaw is loyalty so he spent a lot of his narrative focusing on others. this one is mostly my bias as I prefer to have a character’s narrative that also focuses on the happenings of others with the characters personal thoughts. Annabeth was the kind of narrator who focused on herself first.
2. The entirety of HOO was about relationships. Rick didn’t bother to form any actual friendships with any of the characters (something he was undoubtedly great at in PJO) so when we got to percabeth scenes it was things like: Piper being jealous of them; Percy being worried about them; Annabeth being worried about Percy as a person or herself in her quest; Leo being sad that he was alone; etc. It made liking any of the couples extremely hard.
3. As you (and my other Tumblr babies) may know I don't believe Percy and Annabeth’s fatal flaws work well together. I think Percy is often the one to sacrifice himself and Annabeth sacrifices her wants (material things) and it is not the same. Percy is loyal to Annabeth. But Annabeth’s pride continues to rule her life. For example, if Percy had gotten in the way of Annabeth rebuilding Olympus I fully believe she would have attempted (at the very least) to get rid of him. I don't necessarily mean kill him I just mean he wouldn’t have been in her life. Don’t get me wrong this does not mean she did it or there was even a possibility that she could have. but the reason for that is because Percy is loyal to her. So he wouldn’t have gotten in the way of her dreams. And I think there’s something fundamentally dangerous about sacrificing yourself for someone else’s dreams. If Percy became loyal-to-a-fault towards Annabeth and she then decided to join Luke’s army he would not have stopper her. In fact it’s quite possible he would have joined her. And Annabeth has so much pride for Percy, but her pride-to-a-fault does not lie in people it lies in material things. So she would have gone after her own goals if Percy did not follow. It just seems like it’s luck that they continue to work well together. Percy sacrifices himself. Annabeth sacrifices herself. But only cause their goals align. What happens when they don't?
Please do not make the mistake of thinking I hate percabeth because I don’t. I cannot hate them when those books were the heart and soul of my life for so many years. Percabeth was such a big part of them, to hate the ship, would mean to hate the books and that is absolutely not the case. Annabeth and Percy’s friendships is so important to me.
TL:DR I love Annabeth she is an absolute badass; I am not a fan of the percabeth dynamic especially in HOO; my bias is present in everything I do. I acknowledge it and try to work to bring all the facts together.
I hope this answered your question Gretch! And do not hesitate to ask if you want me to elaborate on a anything further.
I, of course, also welcome dispute from anyone but remember we do things nicely on this blog.
