Bitey-face is a dog game you’ve probably seen and may love: lots of loud open-mouthed posturing and maybe some wrassling. I now invite you join me in experiencing bitey-face a la sloth bears. I grabbed these photos yesterday at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle and lost my shit laughing when I saw how they’d turned out. (Open them fullscreen and zoom in on their facial expressions, it’s so worth it.)

I just cannot get over the excessively extra lips.
The fun thing about watching these two play was the clear use of the log to diffuse tension / reduce physical contact. They purposefully set up on either side of it to posture at each other, and then would circle around and wrestle for a bit, before going right back to their original spots.
Shameless plug, I’ll be posting these and a bunch more on my insta.

Animals: Playing in the Snow
There's just something beautiful about walking in snow that nobody else has walked on.

Speciesism is a word that was coined 1971 by psychologist Richard Ryder. It describeds the differenciation between beings based on their species in itself instead of their trait. Shared traits go unrecognized, because there is the assumption that there are differences based on there being different species.
In real life, specisism can look like this: A person is at home with their beloved dog, and while right next to this dog, they eat a dish containing meat, pork. Never would this person eat dog meat, because through the contact with their own dog they have developed empathy for the species dog and don't want dogs to be killed. Pig on the other hand, who are the same as dogs in many aspects, and with whom a human could certainly build a meaningful friendship, are k*lled and eaten. The empathy extended to dogs does not reach pigs despite how similar they are, because dogs are dogs and pigs are pigs. Even though a differenciation between who should life or die makes no sense. If we're talking about taking about species needs like the dog being taken for a walk and the pig needing dirt to dig in, we can be speciesists as much as we want, and consider the species-based differences in traits and needs. But there are other traits relevant for this topic which dogs and pigs share: They feel emotions, develop relationships, and have the desire to live. It's important to recognize being's traits and act according to them, because the "normal" way to treat most non-human species in our society nowadays is not based on the species' traits, but our own desires. The pig does not desire to be slaughtered. Instead, it's our own - in our environments no longer necessary - desire to eat it.
And yes, plants are species and want to live too. But to eat animals and their byproducts (being omnivorous) k*lls more plants than eating plants exclusively (vegan), as animals eat more plant matter than we can get animal products out of them. Less plants d*e if we eat plants directly. (And whoever voices the "But think of the plants you're hurting when you're not eating animals" can feel free to become one of those vegans who only eat fruits and vegetables that can be harvested without k*lling the plant itself if they care for plants that much.)
And no, plants are not excluded from the speciesism conversation. We should pay attention to their traits and needs and be mindful and respectful with out treatment of the plant kingdom.

Early visual development for Wish (2023) by Griselda Sastrawinata-Lemay and Brittney Lee.
An earlier version of the film saw Star take on a human form as a magical, glowing character inspired by Peter Pan. Ultimately, the creative team reconceptualized Star as an ethereal, playful entity resembling Mickey Mouse. "Now Star and Asha have an emotional journey. They are soulmates." -Allison Moore.
