[ source: (S2) Ep.100 - Enough (Part 1) ]
I’m sorry, but why do we keep continuing to act as if Jason was out on the streets jacking tires because he felt like it?
Why frame this as Jason just being an angry kid doing angry kid things because he’s parentless (or powerless and lashing out or whatever) when he was stealing the tires off the batmobile so he could feed himself because he was disadvantaged - ie: homeless. He was fucking homeless - ?
I’m probably nitpicking, but I don’t give a shit. Also, the narrative that Bruce is who “made” Jason a good person “against all the odds” is such bullshit.

Jason Todd IS a minority,it's just that his solo stans are painfully not intersectionalist and fail to realize he's not 'female-coded',he's poor and mentally ill and classism and ableism exist so he gets hit with both a lot both in-universe and in a meta sense. He dosen't get treated like a woman,he gets treated like a lower class disabled man LMFAO

Something that is completely unserious but I just need to get off my chest is how people mistake complicated family dynamics as something inherently bad and therefore gravitate towards something completely stripped of any real complexity.
While I know this applies to lots of fandoms, I'm thinking specifically in regards to Batman comics.
With the rise in popularity of comics over the past little while since their decline in popularity in the 2000s there has naturally become an increase in their fandom as well, especially for Batman and the batfam. Don't get me wrong, this is great news. The comic industry NEEDS all the readers it can get and the renaissance of sorts it's been going through really shows hope for the future of comics. And with a growing fandom comes more people introduced to these characters through the fandom itself rather than the source material, which again, is a good thing.
What grinds my gears is how throughout this fandom theres been this whole idea spread that in the comics Bruce Wayne is always a shitty parent, the batfam is hardly a family, that the fanon version of him is what we deserve and is the "superior" version of him.
This fanon version of bruce (and the batfam as a whole) is perfect. He's not perfect in the sense that he's perfectly characterized. He's not perfect in the sense that he never makes mistakes. No, he's perfect in the sense that when he makes a mistake, he can flawlessly atone for it. There's conflict sure, but whenever there is some amazing therapist-approved communication is put right into play, the batfam talks about their feelings, and boom everyone is happy.
The thing is in reality that's just not how things work. Relationships are messy, especially family. Resolving conflict is messy. This is all especially true when you apply it to a family of messed-up vigilantes that go through incredibly stressful, emotional, and just plain crazy things on the daily.
The lack of always perfectly solved conflict is what makes stuff interesting. It allows for nuance in characters and situations that there isn't normally room for if everything is designed to be wrapped up in a sweet little bow.
I feel like a lot of people see the comics solely as batman being shitty and the rest of the batfam not really being a family and just overall poor story choices. While I can't deny that sometimes there are really poor or ooc choices made (such is the nature when so many different creators get to work on the same group of characters) for the most part batman in the comics is portrayed as he should be: well meaning, but far from perfect. The rest of the batfam is similarly flawed. Their relationships with each other are far from perfect but such is the nature of family. It's messy, it's imperfect but going through all of that makes it more compelling.
While I still definitely enjoy the simplified version of the batfam from time to time and am glad so many others do too, I think it's a disservice to say its the better version of them. as much fun as wfa or the like can be, they're not able to portray the same complexity as the stories that have the batfam with their flaws and all. It's still possible to tell heartwarming and fun stories in comics where everyone is heavily flawed and nuanced.
That being said really i'm glad people are able to enjoy these characters no matter how they're presented. Goodness knows that everyone should absolutely be indulging in little things in life even if that is ooc batfam. Just consider if you're still new to batman and only familiar with the fandom getting out there and reading some comics because they're pretty great.
(sorry this whole thing was written in a sleep deprived rant state, don't take it too seriously)

My turn to complain about Wayne Family Adventures.
Cass saved herself. She left the FIRST time she killed someone because she hated it. She was homeless for years because she made a decision based on what she wanted, because that is who she is as a person.
Barbara did not save her. She did not convince her to "be good." She did not show Cass she didn't have to kill. She wasn't even a part of that decision at all.
She gave her a place to stay. The Batfam eventually gave her a family. That should be enough.
You don't have to strip Cassandra Cain of her agency--at the most pivotal point in her life, no less--in order to have a heartwarming Batfam moment.

I don’t understand the hate towards Gotham war, like okay, bad stuff is happening to your favourite character, but that’s how all comics work isn’t it? It just feels like batfam fans that aren’t used to reading comics are crying crocodile tears over it. Like, obviously stuff has to get bad before it can gets better.
Also I feel like it’s such an interesting way to overturn a character who’s been the same for the last decade (Jason)

I'm convinced that no one writing Wayne Family Adventures has ever read a comic and they're basing their characterisations solely on tumblr batfam™ posts. Convinced.

Don’t get me wrong. I love unadulterated fluff and feel good works. I do like WFA but it has done so much damage to some of y’all’s perceptions of the batfamily( Dick’s lack of independence and elder sister portrayal, Jason’s owofication, Bruce becoming just a perfect parent and no longer a character, Tumber-equse speech, Stephanie is just a purple happy fun girl save for the two-parters, Duke is either chaotic kid #35 or the new kid, Establishing the Batfam as being known to the world but still having other hero’s not knowing how they are, Lack of individuality of the characters and the list goes on.)

Just because a character’s trauma isn’t being depicted as “little boy needs comfort UwU. They’re so scared and precious OwO” doesn’t mean it hasn’t been depicted

I think 'Jason Todd is a female fantasy' is very true but i haven't spoken on it 'til now because people always getting it wrong and straight up lie to boot.1.Jason has never been intended as appealing primarily to female fans within canon and no,Nick Nobles pinups don't count. The INTENTION with him is an edgy as all milfs of fuck vigilante and cut out og Rhato and he does a pretty good job at that and 2.He's also never been a horndog,a vice indulger, smooth as fuck, the perfect sensitive gentleman,an all powerful bamf or a fuckin' sugar daddy
Jason's a female fantasy-to me at least-because he's a goth punk asshole with anger issues and a physical inability to not run his mouth that're not him being a douchebag for no reason but a trauma response that's usually taken to a fair extent attitude wise instead of abuse,is a REAL ex-villain with a REAL redemption arc, respects women and disrepects men,is a classical literature and theater nerd and a non-pretentious gamer, has a complex relathionship to intimacy and vulnerability, cares about and is good to kids(even if not to extent the fandom thinks he does),used to be soft uwu sunshine boy who understood justice better than a lot of adults as a kid before he was murdered and ressurected, his canon favorite food NEAPOLITAN?????FUCKIN' DORK ASS LMAO,refuses to be rich again on principal after growing up poor, isn't a pissbaby about feminine shit AND his canon type is weirdgirls and the opposite of it for him is perfect preppy judgemental girls who want to fix him
Add an official autism diagnosis, trans man status and afrolatino heritage and he's literally the perfect man.I would add on that he's 6' and jacked(buff with some realistic fat)but my DC self-insert is a half kryptonian 7' babe who's even more built than him so i think you know where my intentions lie /lh

Batfam™ posts are like
What are the BATFAM™'s favorite drinks?
Dick: sparkling hibiscus nectar infused with pistachio honey (bubbly and sweet just like him 💙) served in a World's Best Big Brother mug that was chipped in a hilarious incident when all three of his beloved siblings got into a wacky swordfight and sunshine big bro Dick had to make peace between them because he's a loving mother hen
Jason: vodka mixed with Earl Grey tea—in Crime Alley, street rats only ever drink alcohol because they're uneducated and miserable, but Jason also drinks tea because he's now elevated above his lowly origins (how quaint! He's Not Like The Other Poors) and to symbolize how much he LOVES his rich family
Tim: COFFEE!! brewed from a special blend of extra caffeinated Arabica beans, mixed with hazelnut non-dairy creamer (lactose hurts him just like everything and everyone in his life 😔) and one sugar cube for every hug he's ever gotten from his parents in his entire life (none) and also his tears
Damian: lemonade colored pink with Tim's blood (now Tim is dying of blood loss and it's all evil Damian's fault! how dare Damian be so cruel to Tim in this terrible scenario that I made up in my own head)
Babs:
Cass: water
Steph: water (with a bendy straw lol she's such a character)
Duke: water

I'm one to rag on comics sooo...
WFA serious two parters is one of the worst things to happened to batfamily fandom.
And I hate myself for this because I don't really analyse fiction in a "this is bad objectively" way. Like if a story is effective in communicating it's themes and yadyadya then it's good.
Basically, WFA is effective when writing a simple, no-stakes, firmly slice of life story. It's art is whimsical and 'simple' (Not saying it's easy to draw), it's characters are not meant to be seen or discussed in a complex light and their characterisation mainly comes from outside sources, it's story lines are also pretty simple. WFA hits the mark when it's slice of life. It hits it quite effectively.
But, when it goes "deep" or tries to handle "canonical" character flaws, it's very ineffective.
That dumb ass big brother two parter is the bane of my existence. And I'll use it as an example.
Like the whole set up that leads to the main conflict was so contrived (like most of the conflicts in the two parters).
For one, why is Damian asking Dick to drive him? Is there no Alfred or Bruce. It's Alfred's job as a butler, is Alfred busy? But Damian was in school uniform walking into the Manor, then Alfred must have dropped him off. Why didn't Damian just ask Alfred.
But, maybe Damian forgot and Alfred had somewhere else to be. If so then Bruce. But Bruce may be at work, that's a reason. Then why isn't Dick at work? Why is Dick just at the Manor? Day off? But Dick is a main character and shows up in most stories. Shouldn't Dick have less appearances if so or delegate his appearances to phone calls if he's an adult and as a job?
See?
Next, is Tim's reaction. Now, I understand feeling left out. But, Tim is seventeen. A near adult. Having you're day of fun be pushed back for an important errand isn't the end of the world. It's not like Dick said "fuck it, I wanna go clubbing". It's not like it was previously established that Dick constantly ran himself dry trying to please all of them and in the effort hurt Tim. It came out of left field.
All of these cracks in the narrative leads to the plot to seem unrealistic, and thus the the reader will consider it contrived. This also leads to the theme/concept/ideas explored in the chapters seem less impactful.
Also the fact that Dick doesn't really have the flaw of "not asking for help when trying to maintain family relationships". Not saying Dick's the best brother in the whole wide world but Dick has been maintaining his family relationships as the eldest brother for a long time. Dick being responsible and helping Damian doesn't mean that Dick doesn't have time for Tim or that he's blowing him off, it means life got in the way of play. It's also kinda a false equivalence to imply going to an arcade is as important as helping your brother with homework.
Could Dick ask one of his siblings to take Damian, of course.
Was it actually needed in the situation, no.
Was Tim valid for feeling that way, yes.
Was Dick/Tim/Damian in the wrong or had behaviour that needed to be rectified, no.
It could have been an interesting exploration of the role that the eldest plays in the family and how taxing it can be along with how someone can feel an emotion and understand that even if they do feel somehow it doesn't mean that it's the appropriate response to a situation.
Plus, the whole character flaw for Dick is never brought up again. There's no follow up where we see him accept help from the family. The whole story arc which is supposed to develop his character leads nowhere. Rendering the big brother arc meaningless for Dick's character and the webtoon at a whole.
