The "Japanese Fairy Tales" retold by Teresa Pearse Williston were illustrated by Sanchi Ogawa (1867-1928), who is known today as a stained glass artist. Sanchi studied in the USA from 1900 to 1911, during which time this book was published. The name Sanchi Ogawa and the chapter titles make full use of the fact that the artist is Japanese (?). The book is full of Japanese characters, which are not just a joke. The snow bunnies are also made to look a little more realistic, perhaps to make them easier to understand for the Americans of the time. The book is a delight to read, down to the smallest detail.

テレサ・パース・ウィリストンが再話した“Japanese Fairy Tales(日本のお伽噺)”─挿絵を描いたのは、今日ではステンドグラス作家として知られる小川三知(1867-1928)です。 三知は1900年から1911年までアメリカに留学しており、これはその間に出版されたもの。小川三知の名前や章ごとのタイトルなど、画家が日本人であることをフルに活かして(?)なんちゃってではない、日本の文字がふんだんに使われています。 かと思うと、当時のアメリカ人に伝わりやすくするためか、雪うさぎがちょっとリアルな形になっていたり。細部まで楽しい本になっています。
