What I Bring In My Backpack

Laptop — main note-taking tool

iPad Pro (11-inch) (3rd generation) — to annotate docs

File Folder (with loose-leaf paper)

Stationery — 2 pencils, 3-in-1 coloured pen (black, red, blue), 2 highlighters

Chargers (laptop, iPad, iPhone)

Headphones (main way to listen to music)

Bluetooth Earbuds (if my headphones die)

Powerbank for iPhone

Small bag (to store charger wires, wired earbuds, portable charger, stationery)

Pads/Tampons

Band-Aids

What I pack in my bag for uni

I know this isn't the most beautiful photo I could have taken but prepping and keeping a house and pets and a full time job and other things makes you very busy. But I wanted to show what is in my bag and how I organize it.

So... what's in there?

A pencil pouch I got on sale at Michael's for $5. I have 5 pencils, 7 different colored pens, lead, 4 colored highlighters, and a mini stapler inside

A pair of scissors

Tampons, hair ties, eye drops, and chapstick

A 3 sectioned notebook so I can keep notes for all my classes in one notebook

What else I usually bring (or pack if needed on a day to day basis):

Water and coffee

Granola bars or other fast snack foods

My surface, mouse, and chargers

Makeup

Extra socks

I try my best to keep it simple and limited while also carrying things I will need throughout the day like eye drops or extra socks (field work gets you gross). I have had many times where I forgot to change notebooks or packed the wrong ones on accident so I splurge a little and get myself the fancy notebooks with as many sections as I have classes so I don't do that again. Also keeping a stapler and scissors will win you friends or at least acquaintances easily!

I keep a standardized note taking system as well to help make everything flow better and make revisions easier on myself. I write all my notes in class in pencil and then go back and put vocab/key terms in red, main ideas in black, people in purple, dates in green, and scientific names in brown. I have orange and blue pens as well for whatever I feel like to make the notes more interesting. If my notes aren't colorful, I won't look at them.

When I was a freshman I had so much stuff in my bag and was so worried I'd need something obscure, but over the years I've realized that I really don't need much at all!

favorite part of work today was when i told the kids to get into two lines, n this one guy was like "i don't want to" n then started talking to his buddy in mandarin, n so then in chinese i was like, "hey, come here."

n he n his buddy looked at each other n then looked at me with like that faintly displeased expression that means they've realized they can't get away with not being that good at english (or feel terribly isolated from n indifferent to the adults bc they don't speak their language) anymore

and then when i told them to line up in mandarin they groaned abt it for sure but they did drag themselves into a line

#i walked in n this one kid handed me a book to read like a big hardcover graphic novel type thing n said i could look through it #so for kicks i started reading it out loud with all the silly voices n sound effects n blocking #and so then obviously the other children started to swarm me and god. kids have so much body heat #n you can feel it bc they have no personal space qwq #n anyway so i led them all to a different corner of the room and ended up reading 15 out of the 16 chapters of the book #out loud to a big chunk of the kids for like an hour w/a 5 min break halfway through for water #and when i came back the kids were organizing the chairs themselves into a semicircle to give me enough space to perform #i was sweating more than i have in Quite A While by the end bc again. children are So Warm n also being dramatic takes energy #the same kid who handed me the book today last year handed me some pokemon cards n i ended up spending all of spring camp #drawing pokemon from cards as references for kids to color n stuff bc i didn't want to go to the computer n print out coloring pages #so! i should probably stop spoiling/“yes and--”ing kids at work w/my nonsense but it gives them smth memorable at least #but also i am so fucking tired today lol i had to leave class as soon as it was done dash home to drop off my jacket n backpack #i didn't even have time to take off my shoes before entering the house so I Did An Unforgivable Sin (walked around w/shoes on) #n then put on my work jacket n dash out the door again to go to my 5.75 hr work shift o(--( #i don't regret it!! i did tell my boss i was free for afternoon camp shifts specifically bc i wanted these shifts even tho timing'd be tigh #successfully taught a kid to tie his shoelaces today though!!!!! what's w/kids n always using the very tips of their laces to mimic you tho #when you are very clearly handling the parts of the laces right next to your foot. it did click for him tho eventually #the worm speaks

Travelling is about packing your things in the most inconvenient ways possible

#travel tag #ace is a mess #yes im wearing my new oodie as my blanket i prioritise comfort over appearance #yes my travel book was in my oodie pocket with my earphones wrapped around it and my hoodie which i will use as a pillow was folded inside #my oodie which was then folded and tied by the sleeves to my backpack which is filled with clothes to act as a comfier prop/cushion #instead of wearing all that i wore my coat which had my travel snacks in the pockets but the nylon/polyester whatever material #doesnt make for a particularly comfy makeshift blanket or pillow so it goes in the overhead when im on the coach #tip wear a beanie when you travel mot only does the state of your hair no longer matter cus its hidden but #you can pull it down over your eyes as a makeshift sleep eyemask for travel naps

Had to behead this thing as soon as i made it because the neck of the onion dome cracked (let it go too thin and too much of it was pith, i think). Cut it cleanly so i can glue it back together. Not sure if thats a better or worse approach than leaving it jagged, I guess we'll see if it comes off again.

This is the offcut of the previous spindle I made. Less interesting wood but I still really love the speckles. And i was able to leave more of the worm marks at the base. They remind me of the base of antlers a lot.
