So, uh, just reread "chapter"all it takes is one bad day" and does Twice have pure white pupils and irises like AFO supposedly does? Like, I haven't seen any clear official art of his eyes, but in the one back cover of him they look like they're pure white?

At this point I'm just going to have to make an entire essay on how we should be reading Japanese media with an understanding of cultural and class markers. No, Jin does not have the same eyes or similar eyes to AFO. Yes, there's connections with Jin and AFO but that's another topic. 1. AFO's eye color hasn't been really confirmed aside from that one WSJ cover that implies they can be clear and white. 2. That's not what the "something about my eyes rubs people the wrong way" means. This is what I mean about the cultural context being missing from most of us Western-readers and how we just don't get reading the manga with no guide to explain small details to us. I also wish Jin was just popular so I don't feel like I'm the only one in the fandom yammering about the ridiculous amount of depth he has as a character and in his storyline. First off, Jin's eyes are sunken in, his features abnormally "chiseled" and rough for an anime character. By the time we meet him he looks like he's had a hard life but we also find out in flashbacks he always kind of looked like that.

He's unkempt - stubbled, has the sunken eyes and dark eyebags the villains are generally drawn with. He smokes, drinks, wears a wife beater, has no eyebrows, and used to ride a motorcycle. All these things are a red flag. This is where "you really need to be familiar with Japanese media before you read BNHA" comes in, Jin, while drawing from several different Western comic characters (John Constantine, Deadpool, Rorschach), is also neatly fitting into the yanki and bosuzoku (sorta) trope. Or Japanese delinquents. What throws people "off" is the lack of eyebrows. Yanki are traditionally portrayed with no eyebrows. This link here explains that at sight a delinquent can be identified with shaved eyebrows. This is why so many villainous or rough characters are eyebrowless. It's like the Japanese equivalent of giving villains twirly mustaches and goatees - something about the imagery of that already implies villain in our minds, whereas the lack of eyebrows implies delinquent/criminal in the Japanese cultural imagination (in modern day settings. Heian-era eyebrow-lessness is a different story/class marker).

He's also blonde, or "chapatsu" which is also another "Delinquent" trope in Japan - many delinquents in the 70s-90s bleached their hair to this yellow or orange color (hence "cha" which obviously means tea/chai). Japanese schools are infamously awful at allowing for self-expression to the point where naturally brown-haired students can be forced to dye their hair, and chapatsu hair was a marker of a rebellious/delinquent student. Twice isn't the only one who Horikoshi uses this trope for. Tomura, for example, really had the "up to no good" look early on even if I think he's more of a homebody.

You know who else?

Huh, interesting, given Takami's a murderous professional career thief alcoholic. Wait a minute, wasn't Jin was one of the greatest Japanese thieves until his accident, I wonder exactly what Horikoshi meant by making Thief Takami have a similarly unkempt appearance, rough rugged facial features, and barely any brows? Wait -

Something to understand is that we've gotten information from Yoco Akiyama in TUM about how the main manga's design process works and apparently the facial feature consistency is really important for the artists. Thus the fact Keigo's parents were designed with: 1. Rough, sunken features (Thief & Jin) 2. Unkempt facial fair (Thief & JIn) 3. Deep eyebags (Jin & Tomie) 4. Similarly disordered filthy homes (Takami fam & Jin) 5. Beer Bottles lying around everywhere (Takami fam & Jin) 6. Small, beady eyes with little pupils (Takami Fam & Jin) 7. Grey-Blue Eyes (Tomie & Jin) 8. Clear mental instability (Tomie & Jin) Was absolutely intentional. For all that we see Keigo's parents, Horikoshi knowingly designed them to resemble Jin. Again, Jin was Keigo's villain to save. Keigo was Jin's hero. Keigo failed because we needed a character to fail to save "their villain". Both Keigo and Jin have clear working-class background and criminal class markers. These things tie them together, these marginalized identifications make their relationship something that should have worked. If we want an in-universe reason for Keigo's focus on Jin, it's absolutely true he likely (subconciously) saw his parents superficially reflected in Jin, and decided to "save" him because he was unable to save his parents. Of course, that was not only presumptuous, it was also wrong because Jin is not a stand-in for Keigo's parents (and unlike them is a decent person). Anyway, yeah, no Jin's design/looks made him look like a "thug" to people in his community. That's why he had issues and that's what his comment meant. People's biases about people who look like Twice made him just get...away less. If someone "looks like a thug" you will try to make connections that justify that bias. That's why things like his motorcycle accident hurt him so much. He was uneducated, likely a middle-school dropout, fired from a job, had a record and had "bad vibes". Who'd hire him? Can you understand why Jin was doomed into having to survive as a criminal? Society decided he was meant to fail years before he did fail. So much of BNHA is about people falling into traps of pre-determined outcomes. Jin's tragically so.

Previously on BnHA: Aoyama was all “hey everyone, I am so sorry but I am in fact the U.A. Traitor.” Deku was all, “yeah, in hindsight I probably should have figured it out from that ominous message you sent me a while back which was written entirely in cheese and which you somehow tried to pass off as completely normal.” Aoyama was all, “yeah, that definitely was not normal at all. I’m really surprised you just took me at my word about that, actually.” Class 1-A was all, “we’re here and we’re desperately trying to process literally anything about this entire conversation, but let us tell you, it’s a losing battle right now.” Deku was all, “but anyways Aoyama you can still be a hero and I will tell you exactly how... next week after this cliffhanger.”

honestly, this whole one anime vs another is very annoying - especially given most manaktas have very much respect for one another ?? Some even seem to be friends and draw fanart for other manakats works??? Like sorry, but I heavily doubt oda cared that much when suddenly kny sold better as one example

yeah! mangaka’s - at least from what i’ve seen of wsj series - seem to all be really good friends. sometimes you even get ‘collabs’, for example, when horikoshi and tabata (black clover) both drew manga covers for the others’ respective series. horikoshi’s also done sketches somewhat-recently of one piece characters. he’s also drawn art for jujutsu kaisen, another weekly serialization (and their mangaka returned with their own art piece)

i’ve even seen that horikoshi is especially good friends with both tabata and gotouge. if anything, i think each mangaka is very supportive of others’ ideas, and they even recommend their own readers to check out other series (hori has done that for jujutsu kaisen, and oda i believe did it when bnha was first serialized). im sure there are many more cases, but these are the ones i can think of just off the top of my head.

while i dont read one piece and dont often keep up to date with whatever oda is doing, i’ve seen several cases where he praises other mangas and their creators. there’s no need to pit them all against each other since they all seem to get along so greatly. i think oda even congratulated on how well kny did, and how kny has actually helped the jump magazine itself sell more.

people acting like its a battle but its really not. they just all seem like a big group of pals who just enjoy drawing manga. it aint that deep.

Remember all those people like Gintaes and Ginhijis who keep telling you over the years how Gintsuki is so hated in Japan, how Gintsuki is so unpopular in Japan in comparison to ALL the other het pairings THEIR own pairings in Gintama, how Gintsuki is just a WESTERN and “INTERNATIONAL FANS” CONCEPT? That “Japanese fans” are all on their side when it comes to the Gintae pairing and Otae?

Polls don’t matter until Gintaes and Ginhijs tried desperately to use one of the WSJ polls where readers were asked to choose the character they wanted to be drawn next to Gintoki on a WSJ issue the most. It was simply just another character popularity poll but they used it as a pairing poll.

(Ginhijs thought they won, bc Hiji won the poll, but it’s not like he was drawn handjobbing Gin’s gingin, right? Hilariously both of them didn’t even face each other on the cover lulululz)

I mean if that poll is taken as a pairing poll, GINKAGU, GIN X OKITA as well as GIN X KAMUI are still more popular than Gintae and are you absolutely sure you will happily believe in this, Gintaes? I guess so, so long as Gintsuki or Tsukuyo is BEHIND you, right?

So based on the WSJ cover Big Mom is gonna have pink hair? I always pictured her hair being like an auburn color. The colorspread is fine, its not my favorite, but I’m happy we got one since its been a while. It is weird seeing American style football referenced in a Japanese manga though. We got to see Pekoms and Praline again which was nice, I still think Praline has a cool design. Then we cut to Luffy and Sanji who are told they have to bathe before meeting with Bege which just feels like Oda creating an excuse to show us naked Nami. Must you? We do get to see Lola’s twin sister Chiffon in this scene and she provides some interesting back story on why the giants hate Big Mom, but I think there were many other ways this could have been conveyed. We don’t need a bath scene to give reason for this. Its made more annoying because Oda doesn’t bother showing Luffy and Sanji bathing, not that I wanna see Sanji but its the principle of the matter. Hell even when BNHA had the class go to a hot spring we got to see the boys (or what WSJ would allow him to show of the boys). Anyway Luffy’s given some nice threads and meets with Bege who has Caesar in his custody because he has his heart, yeah remember Caesar? I didn’t expect him to actually still be around after Dressrosa not that I mind. He tries pretending to be Bege’s brother in a hilariously unsuccessful way. Luffy tries to punch Caesar. Who’s a Logia user. My boy. And then Jinbei is all “kill each other later, we need to get this plan going” and we end on Bege saying his plan is already decided on. I understand wanting to create buildup to the climax, but because this arc has simply not been for me I’m just eagerly waiting for this to all unfold so we can move on. And yeah Oda if you’re gonna keep using Nami for fanservice at least tip the balance in some way.

I'm quite new to BNHA fandom and shipping, and it's really tough out here I swear 😭 people are telling me to stay away from BKDK's and that they're all toxic, but that can't be true can it? I have talked to a few of them, and they seemed sweet to me and wouldn't it be fair to say that all ships have toxic and non-toxic shippers? I guess it's because it's a popular ship right? have you got any BKDK shippers as mutuals or whatever??? and what advice would you give to enjoying shipping?

So, I mean, of course not. Not ✨all✨ shippers for ANY ship are toxic and awful. That’s just inaccurate to say.

So idk how familiar with the content on my blog you are—it’s okay if you’re not—but I’m not engaged in any shipping fandoms. Well, not for BNHA at least. So honestly I’m not an expert on how to enjoy it. Curate curate curate. Block blogs who are annoying, mute people on twitter, block on twitter too. Do whatever you gotta do to weed out the weirdos who can't behave.

But on the topic of the fanbase for the ship itself, for some reason in BNHA, idk--people engaged with the ships feel the need to defend their ship's canon potential and compare it to others and "prove" that theirs is more...real? I don't fucking know.

But I’ll be honest, I’ve never seen a fan base as bad about this as BKDK. Yes, it is because it’s a popular ship so it's inevitable it'll be everywhere. But I mean, I don’t see NaruSasu (which puts bkdk to shame) fans acting the way I see some bkdk fans do on such a large overwhelming scale. And NaruSasu has a pretty wild fanbase--but they're mostly funny about it, not....scary. Examples are them arguing with people on Twitter and Tumblr—once again for the purpose of defending their fanon ship’s canon potential—and being SO damn aggressive about it. Writing very aggressive "analyses" about why their ship is bound to be canon, AND that if Horikoshi DOESN'T make it canon then he's the antichrist. A while back, a WSJ cover with Izuku and Ochacko was published and I had someone in my DMs telling ME (idk why me??) that they're "so scared" Horikoshi is going to throw away all of BkDk's development as a couple and make IzuOcha canon, and that he's homophobic if he doesn't....I mean fuck.

I don't have this issue with other aspects of the manga's fanbase. At all.

But it's as you pointed out--it's THE most popular fandom ship, so yes it's going to be everywhere and be more annoying to those of us who don't particularly care to see it thrown in their faces.

But for someone to tell you to just avoid them at all costs is dramatic. If you like the ship, then engage in the content--lord knows you have more to pick from than anyone else in the fandom LOL. Enjoy it.

But YES! On tumblr I do have buddies here who like the ship and....it matters 0. It doesn't matter, because pretty much everybody I follow knows how to behave and not be a fucking weirdo who harasses people and gets insanely scary aggressive online about a fucking ship. If you see people using their ship to shit on other characters and other ships in general and you see that they can't just be--and I'm sorry to use this word--NORMAL about it, then I'd say run for the hills and don't look back.

I generally am not a fan of the current shipping culture because it's turned into very ugly arguments that make my head hurt. So I really can't point you in any direction to get a fun experience with it, but the warning signs that someone is taking it just a little bit too far are usually pretty obvious. You'll know your limits and you'll figure out what you're comfortable with seeing and not. I hope you have a good time though. It's fun here.
