It had been two months since you moved into the small town of Sudbury
You knew nothing about the area, or anyone else who lived here but it was a small price to pay for your dream job working at a small independent publishing company
You had slowly began to make friends at your job but your days off were spent in solitude, exploring the small town you now called home
One of your co-workers had suggested you check out this small cafe on one of the smaller side streets
Her directions weren’t the best though so despite your best efforts you couldn’t find it, not even google maps could help
As you were about to make your way back onto the Main Street, you spotted a small bookstore that instantly captured your attention with its old school look
A small bell chimed as you pushed the door open, and the feeling of warmth instantly hit you, the smell of books filling your nostrils
You had barely stepped inside and you felt more at home than you did in your apartment
The wooden floorboards creaked as you slowly began exploring the quiet shop, your fingers gently brushing over the spines of the books
You were pretty deep into the store when you found a dog who kinda looked like the Artful Dodger from Oliver and Company curled up on a dog bed
The pup lifted its head, tail gently wagging as you bent down to stroke the top of its head
“Hi is there anything I could help you find?” A deep voice says behind you.
You quickly stand back up, turning around to face the man, smoothing out your clothes when you saw just how handsome this stranger was, wearing a cable knit sweater, a pile of book in his hands
“Oh uh no I was just looking, is this your dog?” You ask.
“Yeah his name’s Dodger, found him on the doorstep a few years back and we’ve been hanging together ever since” the man smiles “I’m Chris by the way” he adds holding out his free hand.
“Y/N” you smile shaking his hand.
Chris repeats your name with a gentle smile “are you new around here? I’ve just never seen you before and I know I’d remember seeing you around if you weren’t”
You tried to stop the blush the crept up onto your cheeks, ducking your head to hide it instead “yeah moved in a couple months ago, i’ve just been exploring the town”
“Oh nice, have you checked out Mugs and Magic, best coffeehouse in town” Chris asks
“No I was actually trying to find it when I found this place” you tell him.
“It’s a pretty easy place to miss, doesn’t look like a coffeehouse at all” Chris chuckles “I can draw you a map” he offers nodding his head back towards the front desk
“That would be amazing thank you” you smile following him over to the front desk
He quickly grabbed a scrap piece of paper and drew you a simple map that showed the way from the bookstore to the coffeehouse “there you go, is there anything else I can help you with?”
"actually you don't happen to have a copy of The Mysterious Affair Of Styles do you? Don't worry if you don't I know its pretty rare, and I know I could just get it on my Kindle but..." you ask
"but its not as nice as reading a physical copy" Chris says with a smile at the same time as you
"exactly, you don't get the book smell" you say with a bashful smile
"well we don't have it but I'll keep my eyes out for it" Chris offers
“That’ll be amazing, i’ll see you around, I’m sure you’ll be seeing me in here a lot” you smile taking a step back, glancing around the shop
"i look forward to it" Chris smiles are you walk back towards the door
"see you around Chris" you smile as you step outside the chime of the bell signalling your exit

AU where steve and robin own a bookstore+coffeehouse and it becomes their pride and joy.
steve knows everything about every book and loves to give customers recommendations. robin has taken to being a barista like she was born to do it. dreaming up new flavors of cold foam when she sleeps.
it’s in the fall that they get a new neighbor in the form of a record store.
robin is so excited she can hardly contain herself, has it’s grand opening added to the shop calendar as soon as she hears.
when the big day finally rolls around the music is loud, the line is long, and the complimentary drinks are flowing. by the time steve and robin make it over, they don’t get the chance to meet the owners because everything is just so busy.
they retreat back to the bookstore and try to accommodate their own guests and regulars despite the thumping bass from next door. steve gives them some slack, opening day parties are always a big ordeal.
but the loud music doesn’t stop the next day.
or the next day. or the next.
by the end of the second week, steve is watching himself turn into a crotchety old man in real time. he’s had enough of trying to pick a coffeehouse playlist that will hopefully drown out the noise from the record store. it never does.
he marches over as soon as it starts up one day, fully intent on making a scene if he has to when he spots a tall, lanky guy behind the counter. pretty. add pretty in there too.
he’s got his hair pulled back in a clip and a t-shirt for a band steve doesn’t recognize pulled across his broad shoulders.
the guy throws a hand up and waves at steve where he’s frozen in the door. says “hey man welcome in. let me know if i can help you with anything!”
he’s momentarily stunned until the next song picks back up and he can physically feel the floor vibrate under his feet.
he stomps up the counter and slaps his palms against it. jolts the guy to attention with wide, worried eyes.
“dude. could your music be any louder? you know you’re next door to a bookstore right? you know. the quiet place where people go to relax and read?” he gestures with a flurry of his hands.
pretty boy actually looks embarrassed for a second before he reaches over to a screen and decreases the volume.
he wears a sheepish smile when he crosses his arms over his chest.
“sorry dude. my co-owner chrissy had a pretty bad accident a few years back and lost a good bit of her hearing. i keep it up pretty loud so she can hear it. i’ll bring it down some though. sorry it’s been bothering you.”
and oh. steve was not expecting him to have an excuse. especially not a good one.
now he feels bad.
“it’s really okay. i’m sorry i came in a little dramatic. my co-owner robin and i have just worked really hard the past few years to curate our space and i guess i just got thrown off.” he shrugs. “it’s cool though. this is your store as much as the next one is mine, so.”
the guy smiles big and bright and man he really is pretty. steve’s eyes flit down to a name tag that reads “eddie.”
“maybe just bring the noise down a smidge though?” he smiles when he says it so eddie knows he isn’t mad.
he nods and steve hears a clatter come from the back. eddie laughs and hangs his head. “i should probably go check on her. she hid in the back when she saw you on the sidewalk so i couldn’t chicken out of talking to you.”
steve’s jaw drops at the implication and he has to take a second to reorganize his thoughts.
“i- what?”
eddie brings a hand up to the back of his neck in a nervous gesture and his cheeks flush the faintest pink.
“i may or may not have been unable to shut up about the pretty boy next door since our grand opening party.”
steve laughs this time, loud and happy.
“i didn’t even see you!”
“oh well i saw you. chris has been on my case to walk over for days so when she saw her opportunity today she took it.”
steve’s head tilts to the side and he has a playful smile on his face when he says “weren’t you supposed to be checking on her?”
eddie spins around so fast he nearly sends a cup of pens clattering to the ground.”
“shit! i-“
“don’t hurt yourself, rockstar. i’ll see you around eddie.”
eddie’s head swings back around and his face is scrunched up in confusion until steve points at his name tag.
“ah. right. well, i’ll see you around too…”
“steve.”
this time when steve walks through the door it’s quiet enough he can hear the bell jingle above it.

You're seated at the big table, ready for dinner, when your brand new husband, Chris, looks at you and gives you a reassuring smile before standing up and reaching for a microphone.
''Can I have everyone's attention, please? Because I would like to take this moment to tell all of you something about my beautiful partner in crime and wife, Y/N Evans-Y/L/N,'' Chris starts as he looks back at you, now standing in the middle of the dance floor.
His light blue suit compliments his eyes beautifully and matches the decor around the wedding venue, tying the whole outfit together. His beard and hair are styled in his usual way, making him look handsome, and you feel like you have found heaven on earth in this man.
Your husband. The more you think about it, the harder it is to believe, but it's true. You married your best friend, the love of your life, your partner through thick and thin.
''I'd like to start by telling you all how I met the most beautiful lady I have ever met, and who turned my world upside down from the moment she came into my life nearly 15 years ago.''
You just finished your work for the day, and now you're walking home from the school where you teach. Having a job only 10 minutes from your home is perfect, and being an elementary school teacher has always been one of your biggest dreams.
But today, you decide to stop in the bookstore on your way home as if something was pulling you into that building. The door swings open, a familiar warmth engulfs you, and you feel instantly at home.
You have spent many rainy days here and are good friends with the owners.
''Y/N! What a surprise to see you here; how is everything going?'' May asks; she's one of the two owners with her husband, Jason.
''It's good to see you again, May. I'm so sorry I haven't been here lately, but it's hectic at work now that we're nearing the end of the school year again. But I decided to revisit two of my favorite people; I have missed you both a lot,'' you tell her, and May nods in understanding.
''You're always welcome here, Y/N. We got a few books over the last few weeks that might be right up your alley. I stored them in the back until you would visit again,'' she says before walking off and getting said books.
Meanwhile, you're on your way to browse your favorite store section: True Crime. Something about this topic never ceases to amaze you, and you have spent many hours browsing the section.
Your eyes glide over the books until you spot one that immediately piques your interest. It's a little too high for you, but you try to reach for it anyway, but to no avail. You can't reach it even when you're standing on your tiptoes and let out a frustrated sigh.
''Can I help you with that?'' a deep voice on your right asks you, and when you turn your head, you look right into the eyes of the most handsome man you have ever seen. You stare at him for a few seconds until it dawns that he asked you a question, and your cheeks turn bright red in embarrassment.
''Oh! I'm so sorry! Uhm... Yes, please, can you hand me that one?'' you tell him as you point towards a book about Jeffrey Dahmer. The man reaches for it and grabs it off the shelf effortlessly, handing it to you with a charming smile.
''Here you go, Beautiful,'' he tells you, and you take the book from his hands with a shy smile and a chuckle leaving your chest.
''Thank you, uhm-'' ''Chris!'' ''Well, thank you, Chris,'' you tell him, and just as you're about to turn around and see if May is back, he stops you.
''I hope I'm not too forward here, but you're beautiful, and I was hoping we could get some coffee sometime if you're up for it,'' he tells you, and you happily agree.
A few days later, you're having coffee with the man you fell for in the bookstore, and you've never believed in love at first sight until you met Chris. He felt the same way and told you exactly that a few dates later. You two have never looked back and been together ever since that moment.
''I still remember that day like it was yesterday. That was the first time I ever heard you laugh. It has become one of my favorite things to hear, and I know I will never get tired of hearing it. It makes me feel like I'm home because you're nearby. And you're my home,'' he tells you before blowing a kiss your way.
Tumblr media
''One of my favorite moments we have experienced together has to be the moment she met Dodger for the first time,'' Chris starts as he paces over the dance floor, his arms moving to emphasize his point.
Are you ready to meet him, Beautiful?'' Chris asks as you're sitting on his living room couch. You've always loved dogs, and ever since Chris told you about his furry friend, you couldn't wait to meet him.
He has told you about how he rescued him after filming in a shelter, and it warms your heart each time. You're getting a little impatient to see him now.
''Been ready for ages!'' you tell him with a chuckle, and that's when you hear it: his excited taps on the floor as he runs to the new person in his house, curious as ever.
''Who's that, Buddy? Say hi to her; she won't bite you!'' Chris tells him enthusiastically. Dodger can't contain his excitement, and he jumps on the couch where you're sitting, greeting you excitedly as Chris looks at the two of you.
''See? I told you he would like you,'' Chris tells you, and deep inside, you knew he would because he's the absolute best dog in the world. And to have Chris as his owner makes him the luckiest dog in the universe.
''Aren't you an excited little boy? Yeah, you are! God and you're so cute too, just like your Daddy,'' you say, and you look at Chris from the corner of your eye, seeing him turn bright red at your compliment.
''You two are way cuter together, though,'' he tells you, making you smile. From that moment on, wherever you went, Dodger went with you. He would be by your side anywhere inside the house; if you went outside, he would always want to accompany you.
That year, naturally, you had to take a photo of yourself, Chris, and Dodger in front of the Christmas tree, which is still your favorite photo of the three of you. Your own little family was enjoying their first Christmas together.
''I wouldn't want it any other way,'' you tell Chris when he's done telling the story, and once again, he blows a kiss your way. He's head over heels in love with you, and so are you with him. You can never get enough of him telling stories.
Tumblr media
''The fondest memory I have of her, however, will have to be the moment I proposed to her while we were on vacation in Mexico,'' Chris tells everyone in the room, and a big smile adorns his face.
You and Chris have been together for a little over 13 years now, and even though you have discussed the idea of marriage a few times, it only became concrete now.
A few weeks before your departure on your yearly vacation with Chris, he started his search for the perfect engagement ring. He has visited several shops but eventually found the perfect one for you.
Now, all that's left is to pop the question.
You two just had dinner in an authentic Mexican restaurant and had some fantastic food, and now Chris is offering to take you on a walk on the beach. What you did not know, however, is that Chris's mom, Lisa, has prepared the place of the proposal for both of you.
''God, that food was amazing! I'm glad you chose that restaurant, Beautiful,'' Chris tells you as his fingers are interlaced with yours. The restaurant you initially wanted to visit was closed due to a personal emergency, so you decided to hit up an authentic Mexican restaurant nearby.
''I don't know what the other place would have been like, but I'm so glad we decided to go here because I would eat here again if I ever have the chance!'' you tell him, and Chris can't help but smile.
All he can think about is how that might be your go-to restaurant every time you come back to visit to relive your memories of the day he proposed to you.
He turns to you and admires how your dress flows in the wind, making you look nothing short of angelic. After you have walked for about 20 minutes, you spot the proposal site, and your head shoots over to Chris.
Is this happening?! You ask yourself, and you soon find out that it is happening. Right here, right now.
''Y/N, I'm not sure how I would have gotten where I am today without your encouragement and joy, without listening to your singing and watching you dance when you think no one is watching,'' he starts.
''I enjoy dreaming with you because you understand me like no one else could. I enjoy being sick now that you're there to care for me. You inspire me to get out of bed each morning, no matter how difficult the day ahead may be, and you make me want to accomplish the impossible,'' he tells you, and you're trying your hardest to conserve your make-up as the tears are escaping.
''We both want to live a colorful, memorable life, and we can make our wildest dreams come true if we work together on them. And that's why I want- no, need you for the rest of my life,'' he finishes his speech.
He grabs the ring out of his pocket, clutching the little box tightly before going down on one knee, and you put your hands over your mouth to stifle the sniffles coming out.
When he's down on his knee, he opens the small velvet box, revealing the engagement ring he picked out for you, and he asks the question you've been dying to hear ever since you realized he's about to propose.
''Y/N Y/L/N, will you make me the happiest man on earth and become my wife?''
''Oh my god, YES!'' you exclaim, and Chris takes the ring out of the box and gets up before grabbing your face gently, sealing your moment with a tender, sweet kiss.
''I love you so much, Chris, and I can't wait to marry you,'' you tell him, and from that moment on, you're going through life as the future Mrs. Evans.
''And now, here we are all gathered on our wedding day. Honestly, I couldn't have done this without you, Beautiful. You're the reason I am where I am today, and to have you by my side to witness it all is the cherry on top of the wedding cake!'' he says, and you have to wipe some tears away.
Your road may have been challenging, but you wouldn't change it for anything. If your relationship with Chris has proven anything, you can go through anything as long as you have him by your side and want to prove that to him every single day of your lives together.
When he's about to let everyone know they can start their dinner, you get up from your chair and jog over to him with the front of your wedding dress raised so you don't slip and fling yourself around his neck when you arrive.
''I love you, Chris, and thank you for that. Now you have made this day truly unforgettable,'' you tell him, his arms wrapped around you to pull you close to him.
''I love you too, Beautiful, and I will show you just how much every single day of the rest of our lives.''
And with that, your promises to each other are sealed with one more kiss. Your lips move as if they are made for one another, fitting together like two pieces of a puzzle. You have found heaven on earth in your husband, and you're officially the happiest woman in the universe.

Summary: What is it like to open a book and find your soulmate within? Dex is about to find out.
University student Dex works part-time for a local bookstore, receiving shipments and restocking the shelves and such. Someone leaves a handwritten journal behind during an open mic poetry night, and the bookstore manager asks Dex to please check (!) if there’s any information in it that could lead to its owner. Dex starts paging through it, and then reading it, and brings it home. As he keeps on reading, he slowly falls in love with the person who wrote all of the words. A person who hasn’t left enough clues in the journal to help identify who they are: A receipt for coffee? A feather? Part of a business card? A photograph or two, taped at the corners… A whole list of introspective questions and answers? It’s been months, but no one has come back to the bookstore to claim the missing journal.

What You Can See Now
---
In the span of time between your leaving LA and now, you've questioned whether or not it had been the correct decision to break up with Chris. Things hadn't been what you expected. It made you wonder if things with Chris had really been all that bad. It made you wonder if it had all been a misunderstanding. Could you change your mind? Could you and Chris be together again? You've questioned your decisions that day almost every moment of every day until today, until what you can see in front of you now.
---
“Hey, Y/N,” you can hear the surprise and hesitation in his voice, “How are you? I'm surprised to see you…here, in Boston.”
“I…,” your heartbeat unexpectedly quickens, and you have to pause. Seeing him, being in this place with him again brings up even more feelings that you were not expecting to come back up. Feelings that you'd been shoving down so hard that you'd convinced yourself that they were gone. You take a deep breath to steady yourself, “I was selling at the flea market, you know the one we went to that same day we came to this park.”
You watch as he turns in the direction of the market. You figure that he remembers that place and the day you'd been thinking about as his expression seems to shift to match yours, “Yeah, I remember that day…place. What are you selling? Is it those cards you used to make? The ones that I really used to…love?”
“Um yeah, I am,” he seems nervous, unsure of himself. You can't help but notice how he paused before saying 'love'. You wonder if this is as uncomfortable for him as it is for you. You continue explaining though you could see that his mood was just as melancholy as yours, “I've even got some regulars that order from my new website every few months. I also have some stuff in that bookstore we used to go to, well that I used to drag you to. I became really good friends with the owner when I got settled.”
"Settled?” “Um yeah,” you know this is going to be awkward. The weeks after you managed to stop crying you thought about this moment. You'd imagined he'd be upset to see you, happy to see you, beg for you to come back, or even demand that you leave Boston. You'd spent several sleepless nights worried that you'd run into him before you were ready. You don't want it to seem as if your decision to stay in Boston means anything. It was just easier for you at the time.
You mentally go over what you practiced telling yourself in preparation for the potential of running into Chris. It's just a fact. You live in Boston. Lots of people live in Boston. When you're ready to speak again you can't help looking anywhere but him as you say, “I live here, in Boston, now...”

Feb 3 𓇢𓆸 Hilo
I woke up to Thomas whispering at the foot of my bed.
"Can you get up and play now?"
I brushed my teeth and drew with him at the kitchen island while Chris made us oatmeal and coffee for breakfast. I knew I should be looking at flights out of Hilo but I couldn't be bothered.
A shadow passed across the kitchen window. Chris glanced up—"Look, Thomas, it's Uncle Marshall!"
Uncle Marshall was an artist recluse who lived next door. He made drawings, paintings, and homemade books of all kinds for Thomas, and Thomas had carefully shown them to me in the days I'd been in the apartment. I thought Uncle Marshall's work was beautiful, and eagerly told him so as I shook his hand.
We talked about art, Ed Snowden, and Nina Hagen, and Uncle Marshall invited me to see his studio the following day. When he left Chris told me quietly, "I know it means a lot to him that you like his art. All of it is part of the art therapy he does with his husband. They were both abused in fascist Germany as kids and don't go outside much. It's a miracle they're not dead."
Chris, Thomas, and I walked to meet Cecilia at a used bookstore nearby. She was in the back, haranguing a woman about which books to read. Her long blonde hair slipped over her face as she bent to select another book for the growing pile in the other woman's arms.
Cecilia bought at least eight books, while Chris bought three. I bought A Time of Gifts by Patrick Leigh Fermor. We chatted with the store owner, who had two missing teeth and an endless appetite for reading.
Then we walked down to the shore, where we met up with Carlotta and ate apples on the beach. We sang to distract Thomas as Cecilia clipped his nails. I looked at different shells on the shoreline, but I didn't pocket any because Fabia had once told me that Pele doesn't like people taking her away from the island.
Cecilia drove home and the rest of us returned to the apartment to eat toast. As we were eating, Chris said I'm indecisive, "kinda like how you described your mother."
"It's funny," he followed quickly.
I went quiet and didn't meet his eyes. "It's a flaw."
"So? We all have flaws."
Carlotta pulled herself away, she had to leave for a concert. "Bye," she said as she gave me a hug. "I hope you stay another day."
The door shut.
"This is something I really hate about my mother. So it's hard to hear I'm like that too. Does it make people hate me?"
He tried to console me. My eyes wet as he gave me a long hug. Thomas sang quietly while he pretended to be immersed in his drawing:
Crying is okay / Crying is okay
I walked to the balcony and cried. When I returned, Thomas was pulling out a violin.
"This is my violin!"
"Can I play it, Thomas?"
I tried to recall my third-grade violin lessons while Thomas strummed a broken mandolin. He looked up at me and smiled wide,
"Doesn't the music make you happy again?"
After dinner, I wrote while Chris put Thomas to bed. And when Chris emerged from the bedroom, I joined him at the kitchen island. It was our first real moment alone. I made tea and listened to him talk as the subject inched closer and closer to sex.
"I'm in a really weird place right now," he admitted. "I know people think being non-monogamous is all about being freaky, but I have so much history to work through that sex, even with Cecilia, just overwhelms me too much."
His eyes grew red.
"And I don't want you to find it strange that I'm attracted to you, and that I'm hosting you in my house, and that I'm not..."
"Can I hold your hand?" I asked.
"Yeah."
"Everything you're saying makes a lot of sense. And I hope you find what you need."

Holiday Fics 🎄
Tagged by @hippolotamus to share my winter/holiday fics to get in the spirit now that it's December ❄
I only have two Christmas fics, but hopefully I was find inspiration for another this season ✨
You and Me Here (underneath the mistletoe)
It’s fine. It’s just a kiss under the mistletoe. It’s a Christmas tradition, and in this case, just a joke. Not a big deal. He can play along – his only other choice is being weird about it, which sounds too much like revealing his feelings. So, he swallows it down and looks at Eddie who is still standing frozen, staring up at the mistletoe hanging above them. Buck forces an easy smile. “C’mon, I’m not that bad,” he jokes. The tension in Eddie’s shoulders lessens a little and he laughs softly. “No. No you’re not,” he admits. “So, what do we do?” Buck shrugs, trying to remain casual. “I guess we just suck it up and French a little.”
Where Every Wish Comes True
A man stands with his back to him, talking to a customer on the other side of the booth. Eddie browses the set-up, looking for the selection of kids’ books when he spots the container of hot chocolate. He’s been craving it all night, grateful to have finally found someone selling it. The customer the man was helping walks away, but he continues organizing the books on the table in front of him, keeping his back to Eddie. “You’d think it’d be a lot easier to find hot chocolate at a Christmas market,” Eddie jokes, trying to get the man's attention. The man spins around, seemingly startled by Eddie’s voice. Eddie almost drops the bag with Abuela’s candle in it, his breath catching in his throat. The man looking back at him has captivating blue eyes, contrasted against a bright birthmark smattered above and below his eyebrow. He smiles at Eddie, and any words he was about to say get stuck in his throat. - Or, Eddie and Chris meet a handsome local bookstore owner at a Christmas Market, and Eddie crushes hard.

A priest with a gun sets the scene in TV’s newest ‘whydunit’

The story starts with a bang. A priest in his white and purple robes strides out of a country-town church with a rifle – yes, a priest with a rifle – and starts shooting parishioners, leaving five of them dead. Father Byron Swift is then himself shot dead in self-defence by the local copper. Thus begins the saga of Scrublands, a new mini-series set in regional Australia – and obviously there’s no mystery about whodunit.

In fact, at first there’s no mystery about anything at all. The priest had recently been accused of paedophilia, and the official explanation is that he got himself killed rather than face up to the crime. But then, a year later, burnt-out Sydney Morning Herald journalist Martin Scarsden arrives in town to write a perfunctory story about how the town is faring 12 months on, and starts to smell a rat.
Based on former journalist Chris Hammer’s best-selling novel of the same name, Scrublands is a thriller set in a remote country town, Riversend, which has been battered by years of drought, fire and flood, is reeling from a terrible act of violence, and harbours a profound distrust of outsiders generally, and anyone in the media specifically.
Producer David Redman, whose credits include Charlie & Boots and Strange Bedfellows, says distilling the novel, a whydunit rather than a whodunit, into a four-part series is no mean feat. “It’s amazing how much story you can tell in four episodes,” he says. “It’s pacy. No one’s going to fall asleep in this one, particularly not after the opening scene. It’s such an iconic and unusual way to start, as far as making sure you have an engaged, attentive audience.”
Writer Felicity Packard (Underbelly, Janet King) agrees. “The opening scene is pretty much what takes place in the novel. That’s a really powerful way to start. You’re not hiding your light under a bushel, it’s right up there in episode one, scene one.”

Director Greg McLean has form when it comes to filming Australian crime drama. His CV includes the legendary outback horror flick Wolf Creek. Packard enthuses about his vision. “He has such a strong idea of what he’s doing. He’s already got the edit in his head, so he know what he’s shooting for. He doesn’t just shoot the shit out of things, he knows what he wants.”
The story revolves around two men, the charismatic and dedicated but mysterious priest Byron, played by Jay Ryan (The Creamerie, Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake) and the jaded, frustrated journalist Martin, played by Luke Arnold (Michael Hutchence in INXS biopic Never Tear Us Apart). Linking the two is Mandy Bond, played by Bella Heathcote (The Man in the High Castle, Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows), the beguiling owner of the local bookstore-cafe who has a few secrets of her own.

It was McLean who introduced Heathcote to the project. “I’d worked with him on Bloom [with Bryan Brown and Jacki Weaver] a couple of years ago and he and I were going to do another project together and that didn’t happen sadly, and he said, ‘I’ve got this other great project.’ He sent me the first two episodes, and I was hooked, I wanted to know what happened next.”
Heathcote’s character, who had studied at uni in Melbourne before returning to look after her dying mother, fascinated the actor. “Mandy just seems so tough and cool. No bullshit, the way she carries herself through life, the way she interacts with people in the town. I just really admired her. So often she has those quips I wish I had in any given situation!”
Instinctively playing her cards close to her chest, Mandy has to decide if she can trust the journalist who’s just shown up in town. Martin, meanwhile, is reassessing his commitment to unearthing the truth after an investigative story that spun horribly out of control.
“Martin is someone who was jet setting around the world righting wrongs, bringing justice to the world,” Arnold says. “This truth is so important that you know, if I’m going to hurt a few people along the way, it’s worth it if the story gets out.”
“There’s been the tragedy of a massacre happening here and the media stomping around, and is Martin going to contribute to that, or through setting the story straight can he help give this town a new future?”
The other main character in the story is the fictional town of Riversend. Film crews worked on location around Maldon, near Bendigo, and at the more remote Nyah West, up in the Mallee. “The advantage we have over the book is we can show things,” says Redman. “So visually, I don’t know if it’s literally a thousand words per image but we are definitely able to express the sense of isolation very quickly through what we show.”
The town author Chris Hammer created is inherently cinematic, Arnold says. “The idea of the kind of isolated town that was really wrecked by the event, picking up the pieces, so lent itself to screen”, Arnold says. “These key moments, these key locations, the bookstore-cafe being the centrepiece for a bit of romance.
“This was a beautiful country town, there was the chance for a flourishing community, but what happens when a town gets tarred with this, all people now think of when they hear Riversend is this awful massacre. If you’re a business owner, if you’re a local, if your family has grown up here what does this do to yourself, your future, your investment in your community and your family?”
There’s always the temptation, Redman says, to make films in studios, citing his movies Charlie and Boots and Strange Bedfellows, both starring Paul Hogan, as examples that benefited hugely from breaking out and working on location. On this production, recent floods gave them plenty of detail to work with. “In Baringhup [near Maldon] there was a caravan park we were using for some of the scenes. In October last year it was 2 metres under water so all the caravans were ruined, these were people’s houses. We could’ve created that visually on a backlot somewhere, but you wouldn’t have got the same feeling that these are people’s homes.”
Also, filming on location can produce moments of visual serendipity. Packard recalls a scene where Martin is talking to the sympathetic local cop Robbie (played by Adam Zwar). “At the end of the scene Robbie’s left sitting on a park bench. Greg McLean didn’t call ‘cut’ straight away, just waited to see what the actors might do. The actors didn’t do anything, but a flock of 200 corellas came swooping down and circled around him and then took off. The whole crew just gasped.”
With its dramatic scenery and the increasingly murky activities of the townsfolk, the series has all the hallmarks of an Australian thriller, but still, the heroes, villains and victims of this tale are not the usual suspects. “There’s an awful lot of stories about young women being killed,” says Packard. ”Not that it’s great to see five men being shot dead, but we’re doing something quite different there, it’s a different sort of crime.”
Scrublands premieres on Stan on November 16.

[Podfic] Lover/Soldier
Written by @midmorning-bomb
Read by bri
Teen Wolf - Chris Argent/Stiles Stilinski - Rated G
Summary: "So Chris starts to wander. Walks around a nearby park, through the church and cemetery oddly located between a line of shops and tall condo buildings. Past the good dim sum place, by the pilates gym with the too-perky staff always handing out flyers for free trials of their barre classes. And finally into The Lost Little Library, Used Books. It smells like the most peaceful moments in his childhood, the paper-dust-quiet scent of the books in his mother’s studio. Or, it would be peaceful, if the kid behind the counter would ever shut up."

Are there any story ideas you two have abandoned? Or started but never finished? Also is there any particular trope or idea you’d like to do if you had unlimited time?
✨: There is one idea that we did end up not ever doing which was an interior designer Chris used to know and then does his house when he buys his Boston house but it just didn't pan out. One I started before 🌯 was around was a shy bookstore owner and charming carpenter!Chris fixing some things in the bookstore.
As far as ideas I'd like to do, there are a few I won't give away because we may end up doing them but I think a shy+outgoing oc's are fun. I also have wanted to do a royal au with princess!OC and like a guard or captain chris or something because I love the close proximity, pining that is supressed by duty and having an "as you wish" moment!
🌯: We’ve definitely tossed around some other AUs (mainly sports ones) but nothing has grabbed our attention like Nat’s idea did. I guess one we still haven’t gotten to is our second Royal!AU, Rosie, but we’re trying to work her plot out to be a bit more exciting and get us more inspired.
In terms of something we’d do if we had time… we have an obvious answer haha. And it’s a story we have told ourselves that we cannot write until September at the earliest due to schedules! And it’s killing us😂😂
