As another funny aside, I think it's funny how Remus wound up being a major relationship bridge character in both iZombie & Gymrat!AUs.

In iZ, Roman essentially only meets the rest of the crew thanks to his bro. Janus is Remus's boss and partner (both in crime and in unlife). Virgil is a sort-of friend and "co-worker" in the lil zombie black market.

Roman then meets Patton via Virgil's recommendation (therapist). And then meets Logan through Virgil - a major chain in said black market (partner to both Remus and Janus; friend/mentor of Virgil.)

In Gymrat, it's a lil less linear since it's not following any one person in the crew's perspective.

Logan meets Roman, Virgil, and Janus through Remus.

Janus meets Roman, Patton, Logan, and Virgil through Remus.

Virgil meets Logan, Roman, and Janus through Remus.

Roman meets Janus, Logan, and Virgil through Remus.

Patton being the main exception - meeting everyone mostly through the Gym, with exception of Janus.

AU LIST.

music / band au : this follows early comic canon events in jessica's life. her family dies in a car accident and she still becomes a 'gifted' human. when she's adopted by the jones', she finishes out high school then runs away and works on building a life elsewhere where no one knows about the accident. along the way she meets six ( @sierra6x ; a canon + important part of this au ) and they bond over their mutual love of music, eventually forming a band together with her as bassist and him as lead guitar. getting famous is nice recognition, but she has found a family and a home within the band, allowing her to be herself. although she doesn't often use her abilities, super strength comes in handy when moving around equipment and whatnot. for this verse, the only people who would know about her abilities would be six and her other bandmates / very close associates of the band.

izombie au : in this verse, jessica is investigating the disappearance of her parents and brother only to find out that they've fallen victim to the zombie epidemic growing in washington. unbeknownst to her, her closest friend (in this case, probably trish) is also a zombie and when she finds out, they work together to find a cure. open to doing a verse within the au in which jessica becomes a zombie herself and how she copes with that.

Jame/Tori. 12 and 16. Happy Birthday! Wishing you a year full of understanding medical professionals.

SAME!!!  Anyway, last night I was reading God Stalk out loud to my partners, because we are all very adorable, and I almost paused the chapter to wax adoring about Jame and Tori because Jame made an idle comment about not understanding how someone could decide not to support their brother, no matter what their brother did.  So you get to go first.

12) What first changes when it starts getting serious?

The first thing that Jame notices as a change, a real change, isn’t something anyone else would notice.  Tori kissed her, and didn’t run--kissed her, and held her face between his beautiful scarred hands, and rested their foreheads together like they did when they were children, like she was safety to him again, and that was--that was new, but she didn’t really think of it as a change.  Everyone else sees it as a change, but not Jame.  She thinks that Tori might not see it that way either.  It wasn’t a change, it was a return to the right shape of things.

The first thing she notices as a change isn’t until a few nights later, when she collapses in a chair and falls asleep.  The dream is pleasantly nonsensical at first--a nightmare, but a real nightmare, which is a relief, of dancing in the Res aB’tyrr in front of the randon council, while her feet bleed and her balance slips on the slick tabletop.  She realizes she’s dreaming when she stumbles, but dances on as if a puppet on strings, until finally the dance ends, and she bows, and takes her bloodied feet and her weariness up the stairs to the loft.  

It’s her brother’s study, at the top of the stairs, and he’s there, sitting in the chair by the fire with one leg crossed over his knee and frowning in concentration, and he blinks at her as she stumbles through the mirror and lands clumsily on the floor.  She braces herself to watch horror flicker over his face--sees the moment of instinctive alarm--and then he asks, “What are you wearing?”

“What?” Jame asks, blank, and then says, “Oh.  It’s a dancer’s costume.  What are you doing?”

Tori’s lips twist briefly and he says, “Trying to sleep.”

“Are you hiding in here on purpose?”

He looks uneasy, almost--apologetic.  “I just need some rest.”  And then he hesitates, and then Tori says, “You can stay.  There’s another chair.”

“What?” Jame repeats.

“I can keep us both here for a while, I think,” Tori says.  “You look tired.”

Jame is nodding before she thinks it through, and collapses in the chair across from Tori--the dreamscape can’t manufacture pain or weariness the way the soulscape can, but she is tired.  She hasn’t slept in days, and she’s all too aware that she’s as likely to wander out the door into a disaster as she is into a restful night.  And Tori’s study--the dream he’s made for himself, a shelter from visions and souls--is warm and quiet, with the fire and the old chairs, and with her brother.  It’s--nice.

Tori offers her a faint smile, and takes his foot off his knee and stretches his legs out in front of him, mirroring her, so that their ankles cross in front of the fire.

16) When the zombie apocalypse comes, how do they cope together?

I genuinely do not think they would bat an eye at a zombie apocalypse.  They essentially grew up in one.  Honestly I think they would be THE clutch people to have in charge, because they are very good at this, before Jame and Tori were dancers or fighters or leaders or soldiers or anything, they were dealing with the undead.

The first thing Jame, in northern Tagmeth, does upon seeing the first haunt in the Riverlands is to sit down with a map and every report she can barter, beg, or borrow, and draws out the advancing line.  She gathers her people and gives them exacting instructions, on how to kill the dead, and she sends a letter to Mount Alban that simply says I need help, cousin, meet me at Gothregor, and she sends out scouts for one week.  At the end of the week, she rolls up her maps, tells everyone to pack everything they want to keep, and takes her people south.

She arrives at her brother’s doorstep unannounced, and the Knorth Kendar are getting used to the way their Highborn do things but also they hate the way their Highborn do things.  It’s not really right for their lordan to show up with every single one of her people in tow and demand to see her brother now.  But, then, most of them have served their lord for years now, and they know that hard-eyed silver stare, and no one stops her from storming out to the barracks where Torisen is going over their census with Rowan.

Tori is already looking at the door when Jame opens it, and he says, “Jame,” and Rowan says, “Lordan,” and Jame says, “I have bad news, and I think we’re the first ones to get it, so we need a plan if we’re going to save our people.”

And Jame thinks it says something kind, about her brother, that even at his worst, he cared about their people to the point of desperation.  And he’s not at his worst anymore, and so she’s not surprised when he gestures to the chair at his other side, facing Rowan, and says, “Of course, what happened?”

So I wanted to get back to reading Swan Queen fic regularly, and I asked people to rec longfic that they'd read (not written) and loved that had fewer than 300 kudos! I haven’t read most of these, but I’ve collected them here so y’all can go through the list and discover some new fics with me! Please try to kudos and review every fic that you read! It means the world to the writers and will keep em writing, and then we all win. 😁

Atonement by SgtMac (M): With Regina's magical heart failing thanks to years of previous evil, Emma and Regina and Henry (and Granny!) set out to save her life by traveling to the Enchanted Forest and requesting help from ancient magical beings known as the Guardians. Given a mission as simple as it is impossible - to achieve atonement by creating peace - the ladies find themselves joining a rebellion and fighting for the very soul of the Enchanted Forest all while trying to help Regina to understand that the self-loathing and guilt which have driven most of her actions don't have to doom her chance for a new beginning or even, a chance to live and love again. A S4(ish) SQ love story set against the turmoil of war and the chaotic savagery of the old world.

Blood and Sand by cheshire6845 (E): A/U The Savior is a slave forced into the role of fighting as a gladiator for the House of Hearts. The odds are against her survival as she will have to win in the arena, navigate Cora's schemes, outlast a general's vengeance, and not be killed out of spite by the current House of Hearts Champion - Regina the Undefeated. This story follows the major plot points of Starz Spartacus with some twists along the way.

But what if there was no time by KizuRai (M): When she wakes up, it's dark. She can't move, she can't see, she can't feel and she can't hear. Where am I? She feels a forceful oppression, pressing her down, draining her of her energy and she's powerless to stop it. How did I get here? The question of here is relative, she's not even sure where here is. What happened? There must be some reason for being stuck here but her memory is fuzzy, like all her thoughts are being sifted through a filter. Who am I? She's not sure if she actually exists or she suddenly became sentient in the darkness.She hears a voice reverberating in the distance, it's distorted and quiet but she hears it all the same. It breaks the monotony of the silence. Someone's coming for her, they will get her out. She's just not sure she wants them to as the price might be too great.

Finding Home by evl_rgl (T): “I wanted to remember you so badly that I pulled back your cursed town just so that the memories would make sense. I needed you so badly that even when I had no memory of you, I still tried to find you.” Regina gave Emma and Henry memories of a happy life together before they fled Pan’s curse, leaving them with no memories of their lives in Storybrooke. However, when the memory spell shows signs of failing, threatening to rip apart the minds of both Emma and Henry, Regina makes a drastic choice to go back and fix it, understanding that it will mean living alone in a world where her son doesn’t know her. Was the spell really faulty, though? (swanqueen)

Five Flames by MariaComet (U): In the past, Emma Nolan disconnected from her peers in high school, preferring to keep to herself. In her sophomore year of high school, she decided to try and join the boy’s wrestling team because she was bored. She didn’t expect herself to become the champion of the most bullied kid in school or the secret best friend of the school queen. She also didn’t expect to join a club that would change her life. In the present, Emma is trying to cope with a humiliating loss in her martial arts career. She claims to be “training” but is stuck in limbo between wanting to retire and try again. When one of them calls her with an idea to honor their deceased teacher, she is confronted with unresolved feelings and questions about how powerful love truly is.

A Glamour of Truth by PrincessCharming (T): After 2x10, Regina uses magic to show Emma the obvious truth. A tentative trust forms between them amid hilarious bickering. With Emma's help, Regina struggles to regain a place in her son's life... until Cora arrives, wanting her daughter back. His Dark Materials 'verse by MoonlitMidnight (M): A modern Alternate Universe in which Dæmons (the external physical manifestation of a person's 'inner self' that takes the form of an animal) are present. In which Emma and Regina have led slightly different lives and they make slightly different choices.

How Many Miles to Avalon? (WIP) by RavenOutlander (E): Regina would do anything to save Emma from the darkness and bring her back home safe and sound. Even put up with the two idiots, Captain Guyliner and a bunch of dwarves she decidedly wanted to drop off at the nearest exit. But in their search for Emma, they find that she might not need that much saving after all. Caught up in a search for the infamous Philosopher Stone, an all out war between DunBroch and Camelot, and ghosts from the past to haunt her every waking moment, Regina finds herself scrambling to keep her and her family's happy endings from falling apart.

The Hyperion by FrankenSpine (M): After wishing upon what she believes is a shooting star, Emma Swan finds herself aboard the Hyperion, the royal starship of an alien Queen from a faraway galaxy. She quickly learns of the tensions between the Queen's people and her own, but the Queen takes an interest in her and agrees to take her away from Earth forever. Adventure awaits. *(Loosely based on Guardians of the Galaxy with just a hint of Farscape)*

If Wishes Came True (It Would've Been You) by Angeii_K (M): After Regina films a guest appearance on her friend Neal’s popular show, he invites her to spend the weekend with him and his girlfriend. What she never expected was to actually like the woman. Sparks fly between the two, which results in them questioning everything and making choices they will later regret. 4 years later, they meet again in the most unexpected of ways. Now co-stars on the same show, they are forced to work through the emotions from their last encounter. What will happen next? Only time will tell.

The King Doesn’t Have To Know (WIP) by highheelsandchocolate (M): The White Knight had never seen anyone like her before: the Queen was nothing short of mesmerizing. Her possessive yet neglectful husband, however, was another thing entirely.

What do You Mean This is Classic Rock? ~ A 1k Follower Celebration Challenge

I can’t believe I’ve reached this amazing milestone in just under 3 years of maintaining this blog! I honestly never expected to gain more than a couple dozen followers, let alone a thousand of you lovely people. This challenge is one I’ve been planning for a while now and one I hope will provide plenty of inspiration to all my fellow writers.  My local Classic Rock station has been playing more and more unexpected songs over the past couple years, many that make me feel old knowing they are now considered ‘classic’. So, I’ve compiled a list of songs that are apparently Classic Rock songs in that they are at least 15yrs old, and some of the things I’ve said in response to hearing them playing on the radio. The list contains a mix of songs from 1990-2006 so many of them should be familiar and may surprise you to find that they are now of Classic Rock age.

Everything You Need To Know About Zombies, And 5 Sightings Of The Real-life Walking Dead We STILL Can’t Explain

At this point, I’m not sure anything would surprise me.

In fact, a zombie apocalypse would actually make sense at this point. But even if the grand finale of 2020 was the dead rising from their graves, it wouldn’t actually be the first time.

According to those that practice Haitian Voodoo, zombies exist. And according to scientists, zombies exist.

But the thing is, Hollywood has gotten our favourite flesh-eating, apocalypse-heralding monsters wrong. The folklore behind these monsters is actually rather different than men and women foaming at the mouth as they mummy-walk towards you.

The reanimated corpse didn’t take its first steps with the debut cinema screening of Night Of The Living Dead (1968).

It started with slaves.

Today we are going to cover everything you need to know about zombies from forgotten folklore of years gone by, to the rumours of the living dead among us in preparation from the incoming apocalypse...

What Are Zombies?

It’s pretty simple: a zombie is someone who was dead and is now not-so-dead. According to an official definition they are corpses which have been brought back from the grave to haunt the living.

Yep - they’re just like ghosts. But instead of wafting gently they have to lump around this great hulking cadaver which is in the midst of decay.

Zombies can be traced back to Haitian Voodoo which claims that a dead body can be reanimated by magical rituals. This supernatural take on the walking dead, however, is at odds with more modern fictional beliefs which centre on science.

Parasites, diseases, and viruses (*looks into camera*) feature as the main causes of zombies taking over the world in Hollywood’s take on the beast. This new zombie first pulled itself out of the ground in 1968 with Night Of The Living Dead, but the term ‘zombies’ was only applied by fans after the release of the cult classic. They were originally known as ‘ghouls’ in the film, confirming the premise that zombies exist to haunt the living.

Following this on-screen debut, the horror genre was overrun by zombie films with Dawn Of The Dead and Thriller going down in history as some of the most iconic movies of all time. The genre waned towards the 90s, however, and was due a resurgence just before the millennium thanks to predominately East Asian video games.

28 Days Later and Shaun Of The Dead resurrected the genre at the turn of the century and shaped what zombies are now known most for: the zombie apocalypse.

The terrifying claims of a civilised world being brought to its knees by walking corpses is now a pop culture staple, but more recently its been given a makeover and shopping montage as a part of its rom-com redo. Warm Bodies and iZombie are a novel take on the horror must-have and incorporate a human-zombie relationship that is an emblem for the sexual liberation of the era.

The severed relationship between supernatural zombies and the sci-fi alternative doesn’t just take place on Netflix. There is evidence that both could exist.

Zombies In Haitian Voodoo

In 1819, poet Robert Southey was the first to use the term ‘zombie’ in his history of Brazil. This heralded the emergence of zombies in Haitian Voodoo which chimed with a concept even more terrifying than the prospect of a zombie apocalypse:

Slavery.

According to Haitian Voodoo, bokors - or witches - would use necromancy to revive a dead person. This zombie would then be under their control as a personal slave and would have no personal will.

Bokors were also known to capture ‘zombie astrals’ - part of the human soul - in a bottle which would provide the owner with extra luck or healing properties, for example.

These beliefs were rooted in Voodoo traditions brought to Haiti by enslaved Africans: they believed Baron Samedi would take them to an African heaven after they died. Those that offended the Ioa (a Voodoo god) would be a slave forever - AKA a zombie. This fear of eternal slavery was reinforced by slave drivers who were often also voodoo priests; to prevent slave suicides, they would threaten zombification.

It was this widespread belief in zombies as slaves that would spread beyond Haiti’s borders during the US’ occupation of the country in the early 20th century. A number of case studies reporting zombies came to the US’ attention, such as in the William Seabrook’s The Magic Island (1929): he cited an article in Haiti’s criminal code which recognised zombies’ existence, (it essentially said even if you murder someone and you make them come back as a zombie, it is still murder).

It was shortly after US forces entered Haiti that one of the most famous cases of an alleged zombie emerged. We will get to Felicia Felix-Mentor’s story later in this article.

Zombies In Science

Zombies are deeply rooted in some of humanity’s darkest chapters in history - but they also have a place in our natural history, too.

Technically, zombies do exist. Sure, if you made the claim for human zombification via Voodoo priest scientists would counter with claims that these ‘zombies’ are schizophrenic, in a catatonic state, or are suffering from a mental illness that mirrors how we believe they would act. But if you made a similar claim for other animals - namely insects - they’d believe you.

In fact, there are numerous known cases of such instances.

Whilst there are no known insects that practice Haitian Voodoo, these cases follow the basic plotline of zombie cult classics - parasites infect them and alter their behaviour or use them to their advantage. The parasites effectively make slaves out of those they target, mirroring what we saw in Haiti.

Take zombie carpenter ants, for example:

A fungus enters their bloodstream, hijacks their mind and grows around their muscles. Within one short week the ant is compelled to leave its colony and seek higher ground which has the right temperature and humidity for the fungus to grow in. It then forces the ant to bite down into a leaf, grows a stalk through the ant's head, and cuts off the ant’s muscle control.

The ant’s corpse still moves its legs vigorously as the bulbous capsule of fungi spores grows through what’s left of its body to infect the ant colony below.

There are many more examples just like this with most parasites having their own unique - and uncomfortably brutal - method of killing off wildlife.

Scientists are unable to refute claims that a parasite might mutate and have a similar effect on humans one day, reducing us all to the zombie hordes seen in the movies.

We just have to wait and see. 

Cases Of Actual, Real-life, Not-so-living-n-breathing Zombies

Although scientists don’t support claims that Haitian voodoo can in fact raise the dead and create personal slaves, various sightings and reports suggest that human zombies do exist.

Question is - do you believe them?

#1 - Felicia Felix-Mentor

In 1936, the owner of a farm in a small village in Haiti woke up to quite a shock.

A naked woman staggered towards them with her raspy voice mumbling and slurring that this farm belonged to her farmer. But the most terrifying thing about this strange woman that stumbled her way through the village was that she looked rather familiar.

In fact, they were pretty sure that this was a woman who had died and had been buried many years before.

19 years before.

Zora Neale Hurston - an anthropologist - investigated this alleged case of zombification and met Felicia Felix-Mentor at a hospital. The doctors were convinced she was a zombie and her husband confirmed this was his wife.

Even Hurston admitted that she believed what they were telling her:

“I know that I saw the broken remnant, relic, or refuse of Felicia Felix-Mentor in a hospital yard.”

#2 - Clairvius Narcisse

30 odd years after Felix-Mentor first wandered up to her father’s old farm, a 40 year old man admitted himself into hospital in Deschapelles, Haiti. Doctors, however, were unable to work out why he had a fever, was clearly fatigued, and was spitting up blood. He died 3 days later.

20 years after he died, a man claiming to be Narcisse approached Angelina Narcisse, his sister.

He told her and other villagers private, personal information in an attempt to convince them that he was in fact Clairvius and had been turned into a zombie for use on a sugar plantation. He had been paralysed for the duration of his burial and then dug up to be put to work as a slave.

He described in detail the process of his alleged zombification, claiming she was given a paste made from hallucinogenic chemicals which scientists would later use to refute most claims of zombies as simply a drugged state. When the bokor died and he was no longer fed the concoction, he regained his sanity and thus his free will, and returned to his family.

Much like Felix-Mentor’s story, Narcisse is actually widely believed to have been a zombie. His death was documented by 2 American doctors unlikely to follow Haitian Voodoo folklore, and even the man who investigated his claims - Lamarque Douyon - believed to some extent zombies could be real despite dismissing supernatural claims.

He brought a sample of the powders or paste used by the bokor back to the US to investigate whether ‘zombies’ were actually people who were drugged and then revived.

#3 - Woman from Port-au-Prince

Only known as FI to The Lancet, the journal investigating cases in southern Haiti in the late 90s, she was discovered 3 years after her death wandering near the village she once called home by a friend.

FI was mute and unable to feed herself but she was still recognised by her family, her fellow villagers, and the local priest by a distinct facial mark and other features.

The local courts opened her tomb to investigate the fact that she had apparently risen from the dead and found it full of stones. Her husband was accused of zombifying her after he caught her having an affair.

Despite local claims of supernatural goings-on, she was later admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Port-au-Prince.

#4 - Son of a secret policeman

WD (mentioned in the same study by The Lancet) was 18 years old when he became ill. He developed a fever, his body swelled up, and his eyes went yellow. They thought he was dying or at least already dead.

His father asked his brother to get advice from a bokor but WD died 3 days later. 19 months after he was buried, he reappeared at a cock fight and recognised his father before accusing his uncle of zombifying him.

#5 - Unknown young woman

MM (also mentioned in the same study by The Lancet) was joining her friends in prayer for a local who had been zombified when she fell under a similar affliction. The 18 year old became ill with diarrhoea and fever, her body swelled, and she died.

Her family immediately suspected a sorcerer had had their way with their daughter.

13 years later and MM reappeared at the town markets, claiming not only had she been a zombie in a village 100 miles away, she had had a child with another zombie.

When her bokor died, his son released MM from their control and she travelled home.

B6) What is your favorite story trope? Why?

Oh dear, this list could get long if I let it, but I’ll try to keep things under control...  I am definitely not one of those people who has issues with familiar tropes popping up in stories. I mean, I figure some of those things became tropes because we like them so much and enjoy reading them over and over - wouldn’t it only make things better to add our favorite characters into the mix?   

That being said, I particularly enjoy a good coffee shop au or a meet-cute in a coffeehouse or bookstore. I’m a simple girl: books, coffee, a dashing scoundrel, voila! that’s all I need! ;p 

I also love stranded together scenarios - particularly if they get stranded together in some out of the way place in a snowstorm (which of course means they’ll have to huddle for warmth - wait, is that its own trope?!?)  @profdanglaisstuff wrote a particularly good one of those last year with “Across the Snowy Places” that I simply adore. 

And I also really like situations where someone is forced to drink and love potion or truth serum and the drama that follows. Strangely, considering there is magic in OuaT which would seemingly make this trope more feasible, I have not encountered very many of these fics in this fandom. Maybe I just haven’t found them yet? At any rate, one of my all-time favorites - I seriously don’t even know how many times I’ve re-read it brings this trope into play: @alexandralyman‘s “Love Potion No. 9″

(I’ve thought about writing one where Emma is forced to drink truth serum for some reason and lots of uncomfortable truths she’s avoided so as not to hurt others - Snow, Regina, etc. - come out and there is lots of angst and eventual healing, but I haven’t quite found my way into it yet...)

B8) Is there a show or a book that you gave up on that you went back to later? Why did you come back to it?

Hmm.... that’s a good question! I don’t usually completely abandon them. I may finish and think, “Nope, I really didn’t like that.”  But if I do truly abandon it, I’m probably truly done and not going back.

I will say I nearly gave up on the final Harry Potter book at least twice, but even if I stayed mad about the plot points I didn’t like, I wanted to know how it all ended so I went back and finished. Same for Breaking Dawn in the Twilight saga. Though my issues there are more large scale. I genuinely wanted Bella to remain human, choose Jacob (I’m all about the werewolves), and Renesmee and the imprinting creeps me out - please don’t hurt me if you’re reading this @darkcolinodonorgasm! But, again, I wanted to know how everything turned out.

C9) What show did you really try to watch, but you just couldn’t?

I did answer this one, I think. (For the record, I did not become a fan of Fringe, no matter how much I have loved Joshua Jackson since his Dawson’s Creek days.)  But I thought of another: iZombie

I really wanted to like iZombie - and there are even parts of it I do really enjoy. I adore Ravi, and I like the characters and their relationships. Still, at the end of the day, there is just something about the very idea of zombies that completely unnerves me and turns my stomach. I have watched at least two seasons, maybe part of the third? And I can watch it with my bestie when she gets after me for not finishing, but I don’t know if I’ll ever get it done on my own...

My name is Ele, I'm 31, cis woman, super friendly, slow because chronically ill especially when it comes to ooc chat which require too much energy and focus from me, so while I love plotting and commenting threads don't expect ooc chats to be a priority if they aren't fully about the threads. This is an AU Blog so you don't really need to have seen OUAT because this is NOT canon Emma Swan, there is no Storybrooke, and the princess Emma who remembers what was meant to happen in OUAT will let you know everything that you missed; so you'll need to read Emma's bio, either her AU enchanted forest backstory OR the backstory from our world which can fit Marvel, DC and other shows, depending on which character you play (it's awkward to realize the other person has no idea of what I'm writing, like I said, this won't be Emma Swan even in our world, she's been raised by her parents).

There is another backstory for non Enchanted Forest crossovers that doesn't have an abusive ex in it, check it out if the original one is triggering for you. You can request it, no explanation needed.

In this blog due to backstory issues she would want Regina dead so I prefer NOT to interact nor come up with new aus in which she’s fine with it (I have 2 plotted exceptions and that’s enough for me), and same goes for people who are currently villains from any fandom, though in that case we can plot out exceptions in which they aren’t being villains; if they are a grey-area, aren't people who hurt her family, and if you are pro-redemption it's fine, if not Emma wouldn't submit to anyone or bother to chat, she will try to kill them or die, so no threads are really doable. She's also not the type to hang out/bother with characters who are rude to her or to insist if they want her to leave, or to support who keeps manipulating her, hurting people or doesn't seem to be helped by her presence at all but keeps coming to her with pain to share (the latter would get a therapist card). Basically: Killian Jones the way he was written in the show, or even a Rumplestiltskin who found Belle and chose to do better and so on are fine. Villains who will mistreat Emma, have hurt her family, or are currently hunting children for sport? Not good for Emma.

TRIGGERS AND WHAT I WON’T WRITE

Triggers will be tagged ‘name of the trigger tw’, you can always ask me to tag more AND tell me if something in her backstory makes you uncomfortable, so that I can find a solution (that issue is resolved/doesn't need to be mentioned) or tell you if it can't be skipped and you can choose not to write with me. I don’t write about miscarriage, toxic/abusive relationships and rape between my character and yours (temporarily evil due to magic/Dark One Emma being manipulative is fine, but rape is still a no). It’s not exactly a trigger but please tag your gore and body horror? Again, it’s almost impossible to pick because there are so many gems. Harvest Festival? Ben & Leslie’s wedding? April & Andy’s wedding? Chris & Ann? I have no idea.

Probably the second. That was peak AU episodes without getting too overt (i.e. Epidemiology, paintball part 2)

Oh, Parks for sure. Other than the oddness of the first season and the shaky seventh, it’s definitely the show on this list with the best arcs/writing.

AU where Rachel the reporter became a zombie, and maybe remembered Blaine from WhamBams and interviewed him about his new celebrity status? And maybe they hit it off and engage in a fling for the satisfaction of good sex and trolling both Ravi and Liv?

Random aside but that actres Ella Cannon is also really nice and supportive to the cast even still on Instagram, congratulating them on the premiere.

I like the actress, and that in turn makes me like the character. It makes me think how even tho she was sneaky and manipulative, she was doing what she thought was right.

Oh it was absolutely unethical, and Ravi was right to show her the door when she came back with follow up questions, but I also get the sense she did like him and was apologetic for hurting him. I don’t get the sense she just used him and didn’t like him, so much as she liked him but used him anyway to get the truth out there.

Whether or not she wrote her article, everyone would have been exposed anyway come the time for the tainted vaccines.....

It sucks that she wasn’t really fleshed our, but this is izombie, where we usually just kill our supporting female characters. See Rita, Wally’s mom, Vivian, Natalie. I guess we should just be thankful she wasn’t killed off. :/

Tips On How To Write Undead/Zombie Creatures (For both fanfic writers and original content writers)

This is for @angels-of-hades, who sent me an ask about this, and I decided that it would be great for another of my iconic Long Posts. (See my post about winged characters here and my post about shape-shifters here)

The undead are an incredibly common trope in modern fiction.

From “The Walking Dead”, to “iZombie”, to “Z-Nation”, to a ton of others, the undead seem to have infatuated television writers.

It’s not just television, though- the zombie craze has now spread to literature, too, if Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Warm Bodies, and World War Z have anything to show for it.

And now it has spread to fanfiction. I can’t even count how many Zombie Apocalypse AUs and Walking Dead fusions I’ve seen popping up in the feed of multiple fandoms,

Therefore, I’ve decided to make a post on writing zombielike creatures, which you should probably read before you begin that apocalypse AU you’ve been obsessing over.

1. Decide how the virus spreads- make a checklist and take everything into account as you analyze all of the facts.

Okay, you don’t have to make an actual checklist. Just something in your head.

Think of all the ways that the virus can spread, the most common way being a mixing of bodily fluids (a bite from an infected person).

This can also mean blood-to-blood contact with a victim also causes the virus to spread, and A LOT of television shows just gloss this over: WHAT ABOUT MOSQUITOES???

Take The Walking Dead as an example:

They’re in the south for a majority of the time; It’s hot.

Mosquitoes must be breeding like crazy.

I understand why a mosquito wouldn’t bite a zombie during the later stages as the corpse decays and becomes more cadaver-like, but during the first few weeks? When the blood was still fresh and the people were still kinda sorta alive???

Mosquitoes would totally be a spreading factor for the virus- sucking the blood from a zombie and then biting a healthy human, thus infecting them- and everyone would be dead.

That’s an example of poor planning- The Walking Dead writers didn’t specify enough and hinted at the virus being spread through blood-to-blood contact, and that leaves a gigantic gap in information.

Here are some limits/rules/whatever that you can set for your virus:

- It can only be spread through a bite (you have to specifically state a bite, because that means that it’s in the saliva)

-It can only be spread through gene alteration

-It’s a parasite and the parasite actually has to be inside of the host for it to infect them

-The virus cannot survive in certain temperatures/climates

These are only a few, so feel free to add more!

2. Make your zombies unique

Like I said above, there are a LOT of zombie stories. Like, a lot.

You need to make a part of your zombies different from the rest, so that your potential readers are compelled to pick up the book because wOW LOOK THERE’S A TWIST.

Whether it be zombie animals or zombies that are incredibly intelligent, you have to make sure that these creatures pop out because otherwise they’ll be lost in the fray of post-apocalyptic, gunslinging nonsense.

(JUST A NOTE THAT IT IS COMPLETELY FINE TO KEEP THE OLD VANILLA ZOMBIES. IF YOUR PLOT IS OUTSTANDING, NOBODY WILL CARE THAT THEY’VE READ ABOUT THESE KINDS OF ZOMBIES 1000000 TIMES BEFORE)

Here are some common tropes that are usually associated with zombies that you can change up a bit if you want:

-Slow (walk/shuffle/etc.)

-Can’t communicate (aside from groaning)

-Dumb

-There are a lot of them, usually outnumbering the protagonist and their gang

-Are human corpses

-Result from a viral outbreak

-Do not remember their former selves

-Can only be killed a certain way (shot in the head/head cut off/something with the head/whatever.)

3. Just because you have zombies doesn’t mean you can’t have a plot, too!

^^^^My reaction when I read/watch something and there’s no plot except coME ON LET’S FIGHT TEH ZOMBIES

A lot- and I mean A LOT- of amateur writers think “Ok, so if I have zombies in the story, I need no other conflict except them fighting zombies. I mean, that’s a good enough conflict, right?”

*buzzer noise* WRONG

Yes, I understand that technically (technically) zombies are a conflict. I mean, they’re undead people, right? 

But if your entire story is just hacking and chopping away at a ton of corpses, it ain;t gonna be interesting, at least not to me.

What would The Walking Dead be like without Shane? The Governor? Terminus? Negan and the Saviors?

The reason why The Walking Dead is so popular is because it shows an overarching plotline, with zombies- oh, I’m sorry, “walkers”- just being problems in between. Yes, maybe in the first season it was mostly about escaping the herd, but the rest is about tons of other things, and zombies are just the antagonists that make the protagonists’ lives harder while they’re trying to deal with other things.

You should really follow this example because if the only thing you can say about the main conflict in your story is “there’s zombies“ then you really need to rethink what you’re writing.

Some main goals/conflicts/overarching plotlines that you can choose from:

-Stopping the person who spread/is spreading the virus

-Find the antidote

-Struggle for survival against other humans

-Struggle for resources

-Going to a certain place where there’s supposedly no zombies

-Finding people the protagonist has been separated from

-Plus much more

Here’s some more thoughts on the iZombie/Domestic Assassin AU crossover that my brain refuses to let go of:

In this version the separation between Elsa and Anna doesn’t happen until Elsa gets turned as a young adult. The two of them are thick as thieves for most of their lives.

Before dying, Elsa was studying to be an architect. When she suddenly dropped out Anna spent weeks trying to help her work through whatever problems she was having. Of course, Anna figured the problem was something like depression or PTSD following the Boat Party Massacre, not zombie-ism.

The first time Elsa goes into Full-On Zombie Mode is during a fight with her parents. That’s how they learn what she is, and how she learns that Emotions Are Dangerous. Nobody gets hurt, but the experience convinces Elsa that she needs to keep her distance from people she cares about and keep her emotions in check.

This is also when she learns her parents are assassins. A somewhat awkward conversation is had where they both agree that if Elsa ever goes full Romero, they will shoot her in the head.

An equally-awkward conversation follows about how they can use their job to supply Elsa with brains. 

Before turning, Elsa was a brunette. 

Hans is the one that scratches Elsa at the Boat Party Massacre. So she is less than enthusiastic when Anna ends up dating him later

The discussion she has with Hans about what will happen to him if Anna gets hurt is less a “shovel talk” and more a “eternal punishment that makes Prometheus think he got off light” talk

When Anna finally learns Elsa is a zombie she immediately starts to work on developing a cure

This involves having test rats. In the house. Where they also have a million cats. Chaos probably ensues.

Before dying Elsa had to contend with Anna constantly raiding her chocolate stash. Said stash now consists entirely of chocolate mixed with pepper--the hotter the better. Anna, who cannot stand spicy food, has made exactly one attempt at stealing Elsa’s chocolate since she died.
