That very specific character pairing where they're both broken, but one thinks "I can fix them!" and in the process is forced to also fix themselves. Drink their own medicine, lead by example, self-reflect when trying to show the other why they're loved/worthy of being loved... Healing you is healing myself

older sibling characters that have been dealt with the shittiest of cards in life, who struggle to keep their family afloat, who have witnessed grief and tragedy at a young age that will later force them to develop a hard exterior in order to protect themselves from the cruelties of the world. older sibling characters with a chip on their shoulder. older sibling characters who are overprotective of their younger siblings because they fear the world will be even crueler to those they love.
older sibling characters with anger issues and are meanspirited because they refuse to let the narrative soften them after all the shit they went through.

for some reason, the trope of a character running away, getting kicked out, getting kidnapped or just going missing, only to be stumbled upon by the other characters a few years later, as a completely different person is so interesting to me. like i actually love it so so much. for example, imagine this:
catherine braithwaite never confesses to where jack is, and they never find him. then, one of the gang members years later riding through saint denis, with probably absolutely no contact to john and abigail (would they still be together?), finds him as one of angelo brontes hardened street kids.
i know this has jst turned to me rambling, but i need a fic about this. DESPERATELY.

Oh. You’re the brooding, grumpy, loner, and or all male character in a series? That’s nice. Where’s that weird little girl that you accidentally adopted?

The Frankenstein complex
So I was going through the Frankenstein tag (never actually read the book, but I do want to) and it kept me thinking about this character trope I keep seeing and getting draw to... And I want to name it the Frankenstein complex
Requirements? Here are some stuff the characters I know share:
Innocent child shaped into a monster (mostly) by their parental figure/guardian
Goes through a very traumatic experience that forever changes their perception of life
Has a corruption arc or at least becomes an anti-hero, the thing is that they do very questionable stuff
Terrible sense of self-worth, they believe they're unlovable monsters

The most heartbreaking character trope is the guy who makes his purpose in life fixing things, people, and bad circumstances, until eventually something tragic happens that he can’t fix and he cannot accept it. Even when everyone is already dead.

In theory I love the idea of a character who doesn’t think they deserve love or glory, right, but I also feel like I’ve seen it be written in an uninteresting way too many times to ever actually consider it much more than a cheesy cliché.
I say this because that feeling either goes away so easily or it is so needlessly stubborn.
Someone who really and truly hates themselves and sees no worth in their existence will not change their mind after receiving one lukewarm compliment from their crush. That genuine feeling is a brick wall that needs to be torn down brick by brick. It can’t just be someone telling them they have worth, they need to see it, feel it.
Maybe someone they care about is in a really tough situation and all that person wants is their comfort. Maybe the one thing they’ve always wanted to do and kept failing at has finally been accomplished. It could even be something as small as giving a heartfelt gift and receiving a genuine and profound reaction; a moment of realization that the person they care so much for cares a lot about them, too.
These are the sorts of things that should break down that brick wall. Not Hot Boy #86 saying “Hey, you’re pretty cool.”
By the same token, if really emotionally charged moments like that are not breaking someone’s inner walls down (in my opinion) that is such a missed opportunity. There’s so much tension in a character that begs to be released sometimes, and darkness when not contrasted by lightness does not hit as hard.
It’s okay for there to be hesitation, it’s okay for the journey to self-love and self-appreciation to be a rocky one, for there to be moments of “2 steps forward, 1 step back.” I do just think it helps for there to be a step forward.

I am so in love with the idea of Larger, Intimidating, characters that have a permanent scowl etched on their face, or just an overly negative outlook-
Who Absolutely lights up the hell up like a Christmas tree around the smallest of creatures. ・ω・

“autistic genius” here and “autistic dumbass” there. fuck it: autistic person who’s on paper a genius (possibly in their spinterest) but they’re just so damn stupid generally that it doesn’t help anything

Good guys with a dark side casually saying creepy things will always be better than boring threats by mediocre villains
Villain to hero in a dark ominous basement: “I will cut off every one of your fingers until you tell me who the rat is!”
= Boring. Predictable. Overused.
Random (possibly main) character out of the blue, while eating chips and laying sprawled on a sofa: “If you were to pull someone’s eye out just enough so that they could still see and turn it so that they will have to look at themselves screaming would that be fucked up or what?”
= Funny. New. Good question.
