absolutely loved "robin and batman"!!! my only nitpick is bruce's characterization like a teeeny bit
specifically this quote being very out of character and just. bad
Tumblr media
aaand him viewing dick as a soldier, rather than a kid
i have mentioned how im ok with bruce being a flawed father figure for grayson during their first years but i dont think these two details characterize bruce in a way that fits his overall character best?...hear me out, batman 2004 definitely has a better origin story for bruce picking up dick and in the batman animated series bruce basically expresses that he will try his best to give dick what he himself was robbed of–peace
bruce taking away grayson's childhood feels...unlike him in a way and contradictory to his motive of helping the kid deal with the same trauma. but maybe i haven't analyzed thoroughly enough..perhaps this bruce viewed dick becoming a hero/his sidekick as him becoming a soldier and thought that thats why he needed to treat him accordingly but didnt want to do that so maaybe THATS why he wanted dick to give up the costume in the start of the comic? in this case, it would mean that this bruce didnt want to try and take away dick's childhood but felt like he had to ? i dunno
i would like to end this by saying that these are just nitpicks and that everything else here, especially grayson's character, is done SPECTACULARLY<3 the writer really cooked with this one🗣️ dick's whole character and everything abt him is ON POINT !

Dick about Bruce: “He’s like a brother to me”
(Montage of them screaming at each other)
“We’re really close.”
(Dick slamming a door on Bruce’s hand, Bruce stealing Dick’s fish sticks while his back is turned)
“We understand each other.”
(Dick skittering like a bug on his hands across the mats while Bruce yells “STOP”)

We’ve probably had this discussion a few times, but it is my belief that the original Robin costume wasn’t, like, microshorts cheerleading spanks but is actually the bottom half of a one-piece gymnastics leotard which he is wearing a red vest over, and when Batman told child Dick he couldn’t go out without pants, Dick was like, “If I go flipping around with pants on, they’ll fly clean off - or worse slide down my ankles and trip me up. I would know,” and Bruce was like, “Hm. Well, he would know. Ok, no pants.” And Dick was like, “I am aerodynamically perfect!”

I was reading Nightwing to give an analysis, I didn't know I needed this panel, how Dick recognizes that Bruce was a good father in his own way, it's something I like the tube, his flaws, but he still kept trying.
I also like how it shows that Bruce tries to show more of his concern by asking questions that he didn't ask before.

One of my favorite things about the origin of “Robin” being a nickname for Dick from his mum is that the rest of the circus must of known about the name, right?
So maybe after the accident, the first time Robin makes it on the news they all side eye each other like, “wait a minute”.
Because the colours of the Flying Grayson's -Red and Green and Yellow- are very distinctive. And the name “Robin” rings a bell. And they all very much remember how they were forced to leave behind a small black haired boy after the public tragedy of his parents.
A black haired boy that was a prodigious acrobat, that could twirl and tumble and fly in the air just like the small vigilante that was slowly making himself known across Gotham - and even the world.
So maybe the older members of Haly’s circus have a few secrets they keep to themselves. Maybe they find themselves checking in on what Robin’s up to via newspapers when they stop to perform every now and again.
Because Robin was one of them, once. And they should of known that a Flying Grayson would never stay down.

You think it ever just staggers Bruce when Dick openly expresses his devotion like it's nothing? Just saying "I'd die for you" right in Bruce's face? Like I know Bruce would throw himself into a volcano for Dick, but he's more about actions than words. Dick is about both actions and words. And I think it would mildly horrify Bruce to hear Dick say that he'd sacrifice his life for him without a second thought, because he believes Dick is better than him and how is he supposed to live if Dick died for him?
I'm saying Dick is the most likely batkid to die by sacrificing himself for someone and I'm saying it would definitely be for Bruce. I'm saying Bruce would never recover from that.
Anyway yeah they're both insane and sick and Codependent As Hell and I need therapy

He just ran out of ideal solutions.

dick grayson doesn't need batman
he needs bruce wayne, his dad
for him to be by grayson's side always whenever needed, to support and love him unconditionally
whenever dick criticizes bruce its not because he hates him, it's because he loves him and cares about him. thats why he bothers himself enough to actually call bruce out on his bs and correct him when he goes down the wrong path
because ultimately, its painful for dick grayson to see his parent at his worst(this is how its like for any kid out there), so naturally he would try his absolute best to help him by not letting him be consumed by darkness
by doing this, dick is returning the favour
because on that one night at the circus, bruce did that exact thing. he refused to let young grayson be swallowed by the endless void of loneliness, vengeance and pain
so dick would want to do the same

Superficial Wounds
read it on ao3!
Dick had been in the vigilante business for nearly a decade of his life. He’d stared down magicians, mob bosses, corrupt officials, and serial killers--but nothing had ever caused his body to tense quite the same way as the distant roar of the batmobile as it came into the cave.
Come on, come on, come on, Dick chanted silently in his head, his eyes flitting between the progress bar of the batcomputer and growing pool of light issuing from the batmobile’s headlights as it drew closer.
Dick hadn’t spoken more than a dozen words to Batman in the last few weeks, and had spoken even fewer to Bruce outside of the cowl. Their latest fight about god knows what had sent Dick storming out yet again, but a few too many sleep deprived nights had him knocking a week old mug of coffee onto his computer set up in Bludhaven. He’d been tracking this killer for over a month and had finally gotten a DNA sample, only to be left with a very short list of locations capable of identifying the killer.
The process of getting said sample, however, had been a little difficult. Dick could feel the bruises forming on his face, and his ribs protested whenever he moved too fast. Dick found himself blinking something out of his eyes, only for his fingertips to come away bloody when he reached up to wipe them. Damn.
The progress bar of the computer seemed frozen at 92%, and Dick had no choice but to tug the hood of the sweatshirt he had thrown over his uniform a little higher as the batmobile screeched to a stop.
The low rumble of Bruce’s voice filtered across the space, and Dick relaxed marginally when he realized Jason was being dismissed to go upstairs. Well, at least that was one fewer thing to worry about.
“Nightwing,” Bruce called.
Dick hated the way his back straightened, but kept his eyes trained on the computer. 95%.
“Yeah?” he replied, clearing his throat when the sound came out more hoarse than he thought it would.
Bruce appeared at his side, the cowl pulled down so Dick had a clear view of the way Bruce looked him up and down. He resisted the urge to step away, and tried to tilt his body away from Bruce’s line of sight. .
There was a beat of silence. “Did you need help with something?”
“No my system was, um, down.” Dick said. “I just needed an ID on a sample and I’ll be out of your way.” 97%.
Bruce nodded, but didn’t walk away. “Are you... okay? You aren’t hurt or anything?”
“No, of course not,” Dick replied, a bit too quickly. He stepped away as he did so, lifting his hands from the console and leaving small red prints in front of the computer.
He didn’t need to look up to know where Bruce’s gaze was focused. 99%.
“Let me see,” Bruce said softly, and Dick kept his face turned towards the floor, hidden in the shadow of his hood.
“I’d really rather you didn’t--” Dick didn’t get to finish his sentence when Bruce reached out faster than he could react and gently grabbed his chin, turning his face towards Bruce’s.
He noted vaguely that his DNA analysis was ready. Very helpful timing, he thought sourly.
Bruce swore softly as he tilted Dick’s face to the side, his gaze flicking down the bruises covering his cheekbone. Dick swallowed, before opening his mouth. “I--” his voice cracked on the syllable. God, he was just so tired of arguing.
Bruce took his arm without a word and tugged him over to the the medbay. Dick hung his head and followed, a tremor going through his body when he hopped on to the cot. Bruce pushed back the hood covering Dick’s head, and Dick could have sworn he watched the blood drain from Bruce’s face.
Dick had never known Bruce to be anything but steady, but his hands shook as he rummaged through the medical box before bringing out some gauze and tape. Bruce began gently wiping at the cuts on Dick’s face, and Dick found an incredibly interesting spot over Bruce’s shoulder to focus on as he worked.
Bruce worked in silence, only speaking when he asked Dick to remove the top half of his suit so he could wrap his ribs. By the time Bruce was done, Dick found himself swaying from exhaustion, and Bruce wasn’t looking much better.
Bruce opened and closed his mouth at least three times before any sound came out of it. Dick felt the corner of his mouth quirk up in a smile.
“Stay here the night?” Bruce finally decided on hesitantly. “I can have the analysis results ready for you to take with you in the morning.”
Dick nodded and moved slide off the cot.
Before he could overthinking it, Bruce leaned forward to press a kiss to the top of Dick’s head. Dick blinked.
“You know, I--” Bruce began, before cutting himself off and blinking towards the ceiling of the cave.
“Yeah, Bruce.” Dick whispered with a small smile. “Yeah, I know.”

Just your weekly concussion
"We break in and assess first." Bruce decides, pointing at a side entrance down below guarded by a lone guy with a rifle.
"I'll do it!" Dick volunteers eagerly, already taking off onto the warehouse and landing with barely a sound. He glances up at where Bruce stands ominously, watching him.
Dick flashes a thumbs-up as he sneaks to the guard, before getting the drop on him. Chokehold with his legs to cut off a scream, a punch to the head, push and flip off the now unconscious body, and voila.
Dick and Bruce head out on patrol; Bruce takes a blow to the head.

Taking Flight: A Tragicomedy in Four Acts
Sinopsis: John and Mary Grayson die; Dick becomes Robin. This is everything that happens in between, a/k/a, how Gotham City ripped one family and identity from Dick and gave him another.
An origin story in the Rebirth spirit, weaving together threads from Tec #40, Dark Victory, Robin: Year One, New 52, and more.
Dick just wanted to go back to the circus, to go back to his normal life, waving to crowds and flying through the air. But instead he was in a giant cave under a giant mansion in (outside of?) Gotham, swiftly becoming part of a billionaire's cobbled-together family and trying to solve a murder. And the worst part? He sort of liked it.
Content Warning: none My opinion: After recommending some fluff Birdflash I'm legally obligated to recommend some Angsty Dick and Bruce (as father and son, don't be weird) so here it is! is long, yes, but so worth it! So, what am I bringing you here? Court of owls, Dick and Bruce learning how to be a family, Alfred being great, some guest appearance of Clark Kent and Bruce being a good dad (just what we need <3) I'm begging you to read it pretty please. Also, it's part of a series, you don't HAVE to read the other fanfics but I honestly recommend you do it. the series only has 3 fics, this being the first one. in the third one you will get to see Dick and Wally getting to know each other and becoming friends, so I highly suggest you read all 3 of them
