Day idek of working on my thesis

I’ve started with the writing which is very freeing. I’m also doing a significant amount of coursework so it means there’s a fixed amount of time I’m working with. Not to mention a second shorter thesis I’m doing in translation. That one doesn’t consume all of my time though. I’m thinking of setting aside two hours for exegetic writing and slowly increasing it as the semester goes on.

The most unrealistic thing about All Systems Red is that every member of the PresAux survey team (except for Pin-Lee) has a doctorate.  Realistically the team should be more than half grad students.

i am back with more utena thoughts... specifically about the meaning of the orange, yellow, and green roses because they're very unclear in contrast to red, blue, pink, and white. butttttt uhmm so i think orange is supposed to symbolize romantic love, yellow is supposed to be affection, joy, or idolization, and green is about harmony or balance between identity (the self) and others (predominantly friendships and romances)

probably the most damning evidence i have for my interpretation of the color symbolism for orange is it being almost exclusively related to Juri and her deal with not wanting to confront her feelings for Shiori; also, in scenes where romantic love is implied or a strong thematic focal point, the lighting is washed out in orange.

yellow is The Nanami Color, which comes with her whole thing with wanting emotional validation and acceptance from (mainly) her brother as well as her peers. also very notably, in a specific moment in eps 13(? idk it was at the end of the Student Council saga though) Utena is shown experiencing flashbacks of Anthy where the frames are bordered in yellow. like hmmmm.... because in the final duel, as she reaches out to Anthy to pull her out of her coffin, she says “You have no idea how happy I was with you”..... HMMMMMM....

green is the color that occurs least often in the series and probably for good reason, since RGU's whole thing is about how unrealistic constructs of identity and expectations attached to them exist to serve a dysfunctional hegemony that alienates everyone who doesn't neatly fit into boxes and can only cause self-fulfilling prophecies for those that are in power. Saionji's character comes up once again as a parallel and foil to Anthy in this respect: he was presented the notion of a fantastical, "revolutionized" ideal about the world, had it immediately shot down, and henceforth submits himself to a hierarchy in which he'll never be able to realize his full self as an individual whose existence is condemned and rejected by the very system he's committed himself to enabling (if you go the queer reading route! which i am personally a big fan of). in short, something something Saionji forces himself to play a role for Touga because he both admires and detests what he represents and projects his own insecurities onto Anthy which ties into the greater message about how nonconformity is inextricably linked to conformity and can only be understood within the confines of assimilation.

Sunday feels like a week ago already. How was it only two days ago?

We've done the majority of the work of making the sword, we just need to do this last bit of hammering and quenching and then we can deal with adding on decorative sections and filing down the blade to a sharp edge. The words are all there I just need to ensure that they are Good Words now (which is the truly horrible bit).

And then we can go back to making lots of little daggers and curios and the like, instead of an absolutely enormous longsword. It's saying a lot about this dissertation that I'm actually looking forward to doing revision essays.

Anyhow. We've got this.

read two books about neurodiversity this week that made me realise i am terrible at setting boundaries and that’s why i am forever burning out but it’s so HARD to say no to people when your job is literally serving people

3/4th of my way to final dissertation deadline

I submitted a rough draft of my dissertation last week. It didn’t go as well as I’d have liked it to. However, when you have a first draft, you can only go up from there. I am working on a revised version at the moment, where I structure it the typical intro-body-conclusion way, as the first one was more of an all arguments on one page. The second draft will mostly be a mapping on of my two primary texts. It sounds quite basic at the moment but we got to begin with the skeleton and have faith from there onwards.

The Performative Humility of the Princeps

I have been able to work on my dissertation for the last two days because I am behind on grading a summer semester class. However, I thought I’d just give a general update concerning what I have been working on as of late.

I have been working on connecting Trimalchio and the freedmen’s speech in general with the principes as a part of my argument is that the kind of speech that we see at the Cena Trimalchionis is not actually indicative of an authentic lower-class speech, but is instead imitative of the an intentional form of speaking used by the princeps, in this case Augustus, as a form of self effacement. Within this imperial society, there is only one figure for whom humility has become a virtue, and that is the princeps who is now a singular entity whose level of authority and power is now far beyond the reach of any other person in society. In order to counteract the negative effects of this obvious power imbalance, the princeps must engage in performative acts of self effacement that maintain the fiction that he is merely the first citizen among citizens. We see this in Suetonius who records the speaking and writing patterns of Augustus, who himself uses slang, idioms, and “greekisms” just like Trimalchio and the freedmen. Sprinkling Greek into one’s speech, moreover, is a characteristic of an elite class that consisted of widespread bilingualism.

Throughout Suetonius’ writing on Augustus’ habits, we continuously see an emphasis on modesty, a characteristic that had no currency among the constant political competition that raged during the Republican period. Augustus’ house, furniture, dress, personal grooming, sleeping habits, eating habits, speech, etc. are all described by Suetonius as being humble, old-fashioned, or somewhat ascetic. This goes hand in hand with Augustus’ insistence that almost every aspect of his life be on view for the public.

It is within this context that we can reassess several aspects of Trimalchio’s character. Instead of a desperate freedman trapped by his limited status attempting to imitate his betters and getting it all wrong—a characterization that has more in common with the nouveau riche of the Industrial Revolution—Trimalchio is a hyper-mimetic representation of the princeps and is in fact getting everything exactly right. The critique then becomes the gross-exaggeration of what is clearly a performative aspect of the figure of the princeps.

a lot of the destruction Gon leaves in his wake can be explained very logically and reasoned through, yet Togashi did not make that the total sum of his writing to go -> and that explains everything he's ever done. because he builds on the notion that there is method to Gon’s madness by instead going -> and in spite of that he is human. you cannot strip his character of that immutable fact. and in that humanity, there is love to be received and given yet.
