Surprise Interview
Pairing: Kenma x Reader
Genre/Warnings: NSFW, Yandere, Pseudo-Cest, Dub-Con/Non-Con, Verbal Humiliation, Manipulation
Summary: Kenma sees if you have what it takes to be Bouncing Ball’s newest employee.
A/N: This is for @sugawara-sweetheart ‘s Decadence Collab. So excited to be a part of this collab and to be able to indulge in such a delicious prompt and theme. Be sure to check out everyone else’s works! As always, thanks for beta-ing @sawamooora ~
There’s a familiar peace and a new nervousness about coming back home for the holidays. Mostly because home isn’t quite the same home it used to be. You can feel warmth blooming in your chest at the thought of seeing your mom, telling her about everything and everyone (as if your daily phone calls aren’t enough), and just lounging around while she fills you up with her cooking. But you can also feel a certain shyness as you approach the house, a building that still feels brand new and strange to you.
Your mother had gotten remarried during your earlier college years after your father’s passing and you were elated for her. If anyone deserves all the happiness in the world, it’s her. You had met Mr. Kozume quite a few times and you have no qualms with the man. He treats your mother like a queen and even though you playfully gag as they sweet talk and kiss in front of you, you wholeheartedly approve of their relationship.
However, what you aren’t quite as prepared for is having a new step-sibling.
You don’t know much about Kenma Kozume. Well, not much more than the rest of the world does.
Professional gamer. Successful stock trader. Popular YouTuber. Founder of his own corporation.
You know exactly who your new brother is, but other than seeing him a few times in person at family gatherings and exchanging polite greetings, there’s no real connection. Which is why your heart races as you nervously ring his doorbell, anxiety already making your leg twitch as you wait for the door to open.
Your mother and step-father are on a couple’s vacation and won’t be returning for a few days.
(“We just want some romantic time together before we have a full house again for the holidays. Plus this is a great chance to get to know your older brother better!” You hadn’t even been able to get a word of protest in before she had laughed and hung up on you, leaving you speechless and on your own as you hesitantly texted Kenma, letting him know what day to expect you.)
Kenma is quiet as ever as he nods in greeting, silently leading you to your guest room before quietly telling you to make yourself at home and leaving to do his own thing. You let out a huge sigh of relief as the door closes behind him.
There’s nothing wrong with Kenma. He’s smart and successful. Maybe a bit on the quiet side, but that only adds to his down to earth charm. You know your mother and step-father adore him and you can’t blame them. Yet, you can’t help but feel scrutinized, seen so clearly in a way that terrifies you when his feline eyes gaze at you. It takes everything in you not to immediately scurry away whenever you’re in viewing distance of him, desperate to hide all the flaws you imagine he’s noticing and calculating. Your step-father had mentioned how Kenma used to be the strategist of his high school volleyball team, and has always been able to evaluate and accurately break down situations and people. And you believe it.
You’re just grateful the house is large enough to avoid each other and that Kenma tends to reside mostly in his home office and bedroom.
But even the founder of a company needs a break from time to time. Kenma shuffles towards the gaming room, only to blink in surprise when he sees you already inside of it, happily smiling as Animal Crossing visuals and sounds fill the space.
He had known you owned a Nintendo Switch, a piece of information your mom had shared to break the ice a bit. And it’s really no surprise that this is your go-to game. But knowing and seeing are two different things and he can’t help but let his own lips twitch upwards at how calm and relaxed you are tending to your garden, decorating your home, choosing your outfit.
Kenma’s never been good with people, has never been the one to initiate a friendship. He knows he should have made more of an effort to be friendly and welcoming to you as your new older brother. There’s a slight pang of regret in his chest when he sees how at ease you are while you’re unaware of his presence. His eyes are as sharp as ever and he locks in on the way your body slightly stiffens, fingers nervously fidgeting when you finally notice his figure in the doorway, words already stuttering an apology for using his game room without explicitly asking.
You look like a scared mouse about to flee from the claws of a cat. And it pisses him off.
He hasn’t made the best efforts to bridge the gap between you, but for you to fear him? That seems a tad unnecessary, and more than a tad insulting. It’s more than enough to make the sadistic streak in him want to give you something to be scared about.
But he’s never been impulsive and he just quietly sits beside you on the floor, reassuring you it’s fine to play, smirking when you sneak little side glances his way as you continue collecting fruits.
“Kozume, do you want to play-”
“Just call me Kenma.”
Entranced eyes watch as you grow flustered at his words, mouth silently testing the weight of his given name in your mouth. For once, Kenma could care less about playing video games when a shaky timid “Kenma” slips past your soft lips.
“Kenma, do you want to play something together?”
You have no idea how badly he really does want to play together, but it’s a game you’re not ready for. So he calls upon any restraint he has to pluck your device from your hands and change the game to Mario Kart.
It’s amusing how easily you soften besides him, brow furrowing in concentration, eyes intently and eagerly following the screen, any anxiousness quickly forgotten as you get into the game. He greedily watches as you pout when you make a mistake, as your eyes light up every time you pass someone.
If he had known how easy it would be to make you warm up to him, he’d have done this sooner and he genuinely laughs when you whine and fake glare at him as he wins yet another round.
He asks about school. You ask about work. He tells you about his childhood. You share your own stories.
It’s a comfortable rhythmic back and forth and he’s afraid of ruining it, but a certain question nags at his mind, a question he knows may ruin the entire flow of the conversation.
“You’ll be graduating soon. Have you decided what you want to do after college?”
“Kenma not you too!!!”
His shoulders relax at how well you react to the question, smiling at the way you flop onto your back and groan about how mom and dad are already on your case about future plans.
“I’ve been applying to places, but who knows. Maybe I’ll just work for you at Bouncing Ball.”
There’s a playful lilt in your voice when you say it, a giggle and teasing smile accompanying the words. But there’s nothing funny about it to Kenma and your smile falters a bit when you see how tightly Kenma’s gripping his controller, the way his eyes pin you down.
“Kenma? It’s just a joke. I would never take advantage of-”
You try to get up from your reclined position, only to whimper in confusion when Kenma’s hand on your shoulder forces you back down. And suddenly you’re pinned down by more than just his stare as he moves to straddle you, knees on either side of your body, hands next to your head, his whole body caging yours.
It’s a lighthearted joke in the family that if all else fails, you could always work at Bouncing Ball. A joke your step-father and mother always dish out when the arguments get too tense as the three of you talk about your future. But it’s become less in jest for Kenma, especially after Kuroo sent him a scandalous picture of his newest secretary kneeling between his long legs, lips wrapped around his cock.
It wasn’t the first picture, nor was it the last incriminating photo the older businessman had sent him. Kenma merely rolled his eyes before deleting the image from his phone, wondering when Kuroo would grow bored and find a new toy to play with. But he freezes when he sees the following text message from his long-time friend.
“You’re the CEO of a company, Kenma. Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone convenient around? A pretty warm body? I bet that cute new step sister of yours would look really good under your desk. Doesn’t she graduate from college soon? If you don’t make a move, maybe I’ll snatch her up right from under your nose. I’m due for a change of secretary soon.”
There’s absolutely no reason for the hot anger that lances through him at Kuroo’s taunting words and he grimaces at playing right into his ex-captain’s hands, already hearing Kuroo’s braying laughter in his head if the older man saw just how much his words affected him.
But initial irritation aside, he lets himself really think, really imagine what a life with you at his beck and call would be like. And he likes what he sees. He doesn’t delete Kuroo’s photos as quickly as he used to, replacing the female faces with yours in his imagination as his hands slip under the hem of his boxers.
He knows it’s a longshot, knows there’s a high chance you’ll continue your lives as is, never destined to exchange more than a few polite greetings at family outings. But now...now hearing you voice the idea out loud yourself, hearing the way his first name sounds from your lips…
Maybe it’s not the silly pipe dream he had believed it to be.
“I’m in need of an assistant if you really do want to work at Bouncing Ball, but you’d need to prove why it would be worth hiring you.”
He almost laughs at how you perk up despite the precarious position you’re in, almost ready to launch into an elevator pitch of your qualifications flat on your back underneath him. You’re quite the multitasker already and he groans at the thought of having you cockwarm him while he tests out a new video game, making you answer all his calls stuffed full of him and desperately trying to hide the lustful tremble in your voice.
But he’s not here to listen to your carefully crafted speech. (Guess you really were practicing for job interviews like you said you were. What a good girl.) And he firmly presses his lips against yours to silence you, taking his time to immerse himself in the way your mouths mold against each other.
Your taste, your smell, your warmth. It’s all intoxicating and he slips his tongue inside your parted lips, subtly rutting his groin against your body. He can feel your body jostle as you lift your arms and he waits for the weight of your arms to lovingly wrap around his neck, only to be shocked when you weakly press against his shoulders until he finally relents and pulls back just enough to look down at you in irritated confusion.
“We- we shouldn’t be doing this.”
It’s not the words that have him clenching his fists, not even the way your palms still timidly press against him in a laughably weak show of defense.
It’s the fear in your eyes, the way you look at him like he’s some monster. It's the way he can almost palpably feel and hear your desire to be anywhere other than here, with anyone other than him, wishing to put as much space between the two of you as possible.
It’s your rejection.
It hurts to know that he isn’t enough just as he is, that he needs to resort to less...savory and straightforward ways to entrap you. But he’s not Hinata or Kuroo. He doesn’t have an electrifying personality or roguishly handsome features and charm to woo you. He only has his cunning and sharp tongue.
And he fully intends on maximizing his gifts.
“Of course, you don’t have to. You can just keep on applying and getting rejected by every company you speak to, if they even bother meeting with you after seeing your pathetic resume. Average college. Average grades. Average major. Tell me, how many interviews have you actually been reached out to for?”
He’s going out on a bit of a limb, but his suspicions are right and he cruelly smirks at the way tears bubble in your eyes at his words, no comeback or denial rolling off the tip of your tongue. He had a feeling you were struggling from the bits and pieces he’s picked up as your parents quietly talk and fret over you actually being able to find a job after graduation.
“Our parents are too nice to say anything about it, but you know they’re disappointed in you, right? Have you noticed how they always avoid talking about how school is going or asking you about how job hunting is going? How they only ask me how work is going? It’s because they know you’re just a loser whose life is going to amount to nothing.”
“That’s not true! They love me-”
“I’m not saying they don’t love you, but doesn’t that make it even worse? Making your loving and caring parents worry and stress over you when they should be preparing for retirement, an easy life? Instead of letting them finally enjoy a carefree life, you’ll be their freeloader daughter who uses up all their remaining funds. Is that what you want?”
You really are too easy and his lips curl in satisfaction at the way you frantically shake your head side to side, fat wet drops streaming down your face, adorable sniffles filling the air.
“If you become my assistant, I’ll compensate you well. You can live here with me, have your own room, a roof over your head, all the food and clothing you need and want. Think about how relieved and happy our parents will be seeing you provided for, seeing us getting along. Isn’t that what you want? For them to be happy?”
He knows how close you are to your mom, how important this idea of a perfect family is to you. He knows how insecurity and doubt about your own capabilities torment you. And he knows you’re hooked on his claws when your hands that are still pressed against his shoulders drop limply besides you, not even a hint of resistance left in you when he leans down once more to rest his forehead on yours, one hand cupping the side of your face.
“This is all you’re good for anyway. Working underneath me.”
If you notice his pun, you don’t acknowledge it, too busy wincing and squirming as he harshly nips and bites a trail from your lips to your neck as he pushes up the hem of your shirt until your chest is on full display for him. There’s something experimental, cold, meticulous about the way he gropes and fondles your breasts.Your face heats in humiliation at how he treats you like one of the many game consoles he’s reviewed for his audience.
But you don’t do anything about it, telling yourself that this is just his version of an interview as he pinches and prods at you, meanly twisting your nipples and chuckling at your yelp of pain. You obediently let him spread your legs apart, only letting out an agonized cry as he tests your flexibility, staring at him with a trembling lower lip as he sharply tells you to shut up while scrutinizing your panty-covered sex.
“You really are made for this, aren’t you?”
You whimper as he nudges the small wet spot on the thin fabric, clenching your eyes shut in denial at how hot and wound up your body feels from his touch, unable to hide your gasp as he pulls the layer aside and rubs your aroused clit.
There’s something so different about the way his fingers slowly sink into your wet pussy, almost lazily curling against your soft walls, his thumb never stopping its careful massage on the bundle of nerves at the apex of your thighs. So different from your own fingers desperately thrusting in and out of you. So different from the drunk partners you’ve hooked up with at college and their sloppy, rapid, frantic movements.
You can feel something large, something intimidating slowly rising from deep inside of you, a volcano about to erupt compared to the bright and fast to fade shooting stars you’re used to. You’re scared. Scared of the intoxicating feeling, of how easy it is to grow accustomed to Kenma’s presence, of how his cat-like eyes are all you can see and think of.
How can something feel so wrong and so right at the same time?
That’s the last coherent thought you have before your world goes blank, pleasure rocking through you as you soak the carpet and your step-brother’s hand with your juices. You’re moaning as Kenma continues to rock his fingers in and out of you, fingertips insistently massaging your clit and g-spot as you ride out your orgasm, body trembling and convulsing.
But even when the tremors slow, when pleasure becomes something sharper, more overwhelming, he doesn’t stop. You wail, begging him to stop, to let you rest, slumping in relief when he finally drags his hands away from you, carelessly wiping the mess you’ve made of his hand on your skin, covering you in your own essence.
Your heavy eyelids threaten to flutter shut as you let exhaustion wash over you, already dreading having to get up and wash yourself. But you’re shocked back to reality as something hard begins to nudge at your still fluttering entrance.
“Kenma! No! Too much-”
You break off into a sob as surprisingly strong hands dig into your hips, holding you still as he pushes and pushes until he’s fully settled inside of you, balls resting against your ass.
You’re still so tight, your quivering walls clamping around the intrusion, and he groans at the thought of being able to sink into this hole every day, multiple times, whenever he wants. His cock is already aching from holding off for so long, from watching your body and face contorted in pleasure. Kenma can feel his end quickly approaching as you scream and wail underneath him, eyes rolling back in your head, drool trickling from the corner of your mouth. You look absolutely obscene and he doesn’t think he’ll ever get enough of this side of you.
But despite the way his balls are tightening, despite the stutter in his hips, he’s determined to watch you fall apart once more, to see you shatter to pieces yet again. He grits his teeth, fingers reaching down to furiously rub at your already oversensitized clit, reveling in how your back arches, thighs shaking in overstimulation, and then you snap.
He wonders what his parents would think of their dear dumb daughter now, looking nothing like their silly angel, looking like a wanton used whore, incoherent garbled noises slipping past your lips as you twitch uncontrollably, your pussy milking him dry as he cums inside of you.
There’s only silence mixed with your pitiful whimpers as he slides out of you, grimacing at the sticky mess you’ve made of yourself and him. But that’s what your other hole is for and he orders you to suck him clean, admiring what a quick learner you are, eager to please as you noisily slurp and lick him clean, moaning at the taste of your combined fluids...
Maybe too eager and he shoves you off of him when you become too enthusiastic, his cock beginning to twitch in interest once more.
You look so lost, still sprawled out on the ground, staring up at him with wide imploring eyes as he pulls up his pants. So vulnerable and in need of guidance.
Good thing you have such a great boss to manage you.
“Not bad. Consider these next few days your internship and if all goes well, I’ll be more than happy to hire you as Bouncing Ball’s newest employee this summer. Now clean up this room and show me that my future assistant can do more than just be a slut.”

The HQ boys coming home to see their s/o dancing + singing in the kitchen
AHAOSNKSS thanks anon that means the world to me I’m glad you felt this way🥺 my heart is warm💘
The BNHA one if anyone was wondering ☺️
Here’s what @millie-mint did for Tsukki, Daichi, and Semi
PAIRINGS: Akaashi x fem!reader, Kenma x fem!reader, Atsumu x fem!reader
GENRE: Fluff!!!!!!!!
Tumblr media
Working long hours at his job always makes him miss your presence and he was eager to go home to you
And it’s definitely a sight when he sees your pretty self singing and twirling around in the kitchen using a broom as a microphone
He lets himself stare to soak in all of you and how comforting you are just being you
And he grabs the extra broom in the closet to help you sweep (well he’ll sweep and you’ll dance ig)
He’s chuckling to himself when you don’t notice him until the song ends and he gives you a small clap for the performance
“KAASHI!!” You scream, embracing him with all your might because you’ve missed him so much
“Hi sweetheart, how was your day?”
You love how thoughtful your boyfriend is and take the broom from his arms, hoping to let him rest for the day
“It was good, as always! Let me take that from you”
But his stubborn hands don’t allow it and he promises that he wants to spend time with you no matter what you’re doing
so that’s how you and Akaashi spent the rest of the day cleaning the house and catching up on everything
Tumblr media
Being the MSBY Jackals’ setter was definitely a tiring job and knowing you were at home waiting for him? Perfect
And he was in for a good laugh because when he walked through the door, you were covered in flour from the cookies you were baking and belting the lyrics of “party in the USA” that was playing through your speaker
He couldn’t help but snap a pic and snicker as he makes his way over to you pretending you were a rockstar and loops his arms around you to lift you in the air
You gasp as your boyfriend sets you down and you’re giddy as you point to the cookie tray that was about to go into the oven
“I made double chocolate fudge cookies see?” You exclaim and he chuckles, messing up the top of your hair
“That was some cute dancing you were doing there, Ms Miley Cyrus,” he teases
You slap him playfully on the arm and grimace at his comment
And when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, he pulls out his phone to show you his new lock screen: the picture of you jamming out
You shriek, reaching out to grab it with Atsumu easily dodging every time
It was a game of cat and mouse until the cookies finished and you threatened to not give him any if he didn’t delete it
He didn’t delete it, but he did coerce you into giving him the cookies by offering cuddles all night long
Tumblr media
Being a professional Youtuber? Tiring. Being a CEO of your own own company as well? Absolutely mind-breakingly exhausting!
So it’s no surprise that he’s able to let out a breath of relief when he sees the normalcy (yet weird) presence that is you in the kitchen dancing about while making his favourite apple pie
He marvels at you like you’re a new game he’s been waiting for, for months and fiddles with his fingers before asking when the apple pie will be done but not wanting to interrupt your little session
You grin at him and go “there’s my sugar daddy— I mean boyfriend!”
Your jokes make him want to face palm but he lets you lead you to the kitchen table and seat him in the chair
He listens intently as you ramble on about your day and offer comments here and there to show that he’s listening
He notices there’s still a slight bounce in your step as though you were dancing and engraved it into his memory
How could he not when everything you do gives him serotonin?
He doesn’t tell you that, but the next time he sees Hinata and Kuroo, he’s raving about it to them like no other

track 18: feelings?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kenma has never really been a people person. Yeah, over the years he’s gotten better with ‘human interaction’ , but he would still prefer to be alone. There were very few people whose company he didn’t mind, and recently he had been contemplating whether you should be added to the list. Though that idea has been teetering in and out of his mind given the fact you two hadn’t actually hung out in person.  Actually, save for the one pants-less interaction, neither of you had ever been in the same room together. But still, he kinda likes you. More than a friend, he’d like to think. Though the idea scared the fuck out of him, he would actually like to take you on a real date. One that didn’t result in your dinner being up in flames.
Maybe he’d even take you to a cutesy café in Tokyo. Like the one he was currently sitting in. Eating apple pie. Across from a girl. A girl who definitely wasn’t you.
“Honestly, I don’t know why you didn’t just become a model.” After the photoshoot, Etsuko insisted on getting a bite to eat. Something about wanting to catch up because it’s been a whole year. He didn’t really understand why, he knew for a fact Kuroo called her every time something juicy happened to him. Whatever that meant. Besides, he couldn’t turn down a slice of his favorite food.
“Because wearing stupid clothes and standing in front of a camera for hours is not my ideal career, ‘Tsuko.” He took another bite of what was left of his slice. He’s glad he chose to sit in a booth away from the windows, he had already been recognized twice on the way here. It’s why he did his best to avoid walking through the city. Especially dressed like this.
“C’mon, Kenmaaaa, the button up is cute. You look like a businessman.” She snorts through her smoothie straw.
“I am a businessman. I’m quite literally a CEO.” He gives her a deadpan stare before taking a sip from his own milkshake. “I don’t know how your rooster boy manages to wear this stupid getup 24/7. I’m suffocating in these slacks.” He’d been pulling at the tight-fitting pants all day, but the magazine suggested he look professional for the shoot.
“What’s the matter, Kenma? Too much junk in the front?” Etsuko wiggles her eyebrows at him. She always did have the dirtiest mind.
“Gross, ‘tsuko.” He squints at her and shakes his head.
“Speaking of your little fella, when was the last time you got laid, baby boy?” Despite her suggestive tone, Kenma knew she was genuinely curious. She was the one who told him what sex was anyway. Gross, he shudders at the memory.
“Is that an offer, ‘Tsuko?” He knew it wasn’t, and he knew even if it was the answer would be no, but he was deflecting.
“Only if you let me post it on the hub.” She winks at him and slurps at her empty cup for emphasis. “Quit deflecting, Kenma, I heard about your lil boo thang.” She cracks up at her own joke and asks the waiter for a refill.
Kenma scrunches his nose in disgust. “Don’t call her that.” Yeah, you guys weren’t dating, and yeah, you probably didn’t even know he liked you, but still.
“Look at you, defending her honor, how sweet.” She mockingly shakes her head at every word. “I heard you stole her from little rooster boy.” She leans in towards him, like it was some big secret.
“Of course he exaggerated that, he’s the one who set her food on fire. Besides, she texted me first.” He recounts the way he freaked the fuck out when he saw you texted him. His demeanor was always more calm over the internet, probably why he had millions of fans, but he was still an antisocial wreck IRL.
“Ahh, so she’s ballsy, huh. Who knew little Kenma liked bold girls? Tell me about her.” She leans her head into her palm. To anyone else she would’ve dropped it already, losing interest. But this was Kenma, she was always poking her nose into his business.
“She’s a med student, same age as me. Friend of a friend, I guess. “ He shrugs. He figured that would keep her dormant enough to change the subject.
“You got yourself a smarty pants. Cute, but that’s not what I wanted to know.” She raises her eyebrow at him. “Do you like her? Is this just a hump and dump? You gonna marry her?” Her eyes got wider with every question, it kinda freaked him out.
Damn, he thought he could dodge it, but Etsie has always been super pushy. “I don’t know. I mean I'm definitely not gonna hit it & quit it. I haven’t even hung out with her for real.  And dude, I’m 23, m’not thinking about marrying anyone at the moment.” He held his breath and figured that was enough. He was not ready to admit it out loud yet.
“Ah ah ah, you skipped a question, baby boy.” She gives him a devilish grin and leans in even closer. “I won’t tell a soul.”
Okay, even if she was a bit much, Etsuko never spilled Kenma’s secrets. To anyone. Not even Kuroo. But it wasn’t that he didn’t trust her. It was just... Was he ready to admit he had feelings? It's only been a few months, and he hadn’t even spoken to you in person. So what if he texted and called you 24/7? Wouldn’t it be too early? You’d probably be freaked out if he went ahead and confessed his feelings so early on.
Ah, fuck it.
“Yeah, ‘Tsuko. I like her. Like a lot. She’s funny as hell, smart as shit, and she gets me. Plus she’s the prettiest girl I’ve ever met. Like, prettier than you.” He knows that would probably offend any other girl, but he was only ever straight up with ‘Tsuko.
“EEK!” Etsuko lets out a pig squeal that has other customers staring in confusion. She balls her fists up and starts shaking aggressively. “My baby boy has a crush! EEK! I’m so proud of you.” She leans over the whole table and grabs Kenma’s face, placing a loud kiss on his forehead.
He flicks her forehead and smiles. “Shut up, it’s not like this is the first crush I’ve ever had.”
“I take pride in being your first crush, little bro.” She places her hand on her chest in mock pain, but the grin on her face exposes itself.
“When you put it like that it sounds like incest. I was 8, you weirdo. ” Both were true, when Kenma first met Etsuko he developed a crush on her. (Mostly because she was the only girl who he’d ever interacted with.) It only lasted a month anyway; he eventually got annoyed with how much her and her brother were at his house. Now, after 15 years of being stuck with Kuroo, Kenma could only ever see them both as the siblings he never had.
“Still, I was your first love, Kenma.” She looks off dramatically into the distance, as if she was having a flashback.
“You’re gay.” The smirk on his face gives off his slight amusement with her stupidly dramatic antics.
“Now, “ She slams her hands on the table, causing more people to stare and the silverware to rattle, “Aren’t you going to ask me about my lovelife?”
“No, I don’t care.” He snorts at the hurt look on her face.
“Well, my girlfriend is doing WONDERFUL, Kozume Kenma, thanks for asking.” She crosses her arms and sticks her nose in the air.
“Yeah, whatever, you’re paying.” He pulls out his phone to see if there are any texts from you. On cue, the notification on his phone displays your name. He grins down at the unopened text, not even bothering to hide his happiness from Etsuko.
Mid-rant about how he should pay because he’s got all the money, she stops and stares at him. A soft smile appears on her face, a swell of pride shoots through her. She only ever saw Kenma as a baby brother, and was genuinely happy for his growth over the years.
Suddenly, Kenma’s phone flashes with your contact, a facetime call from you.
“I gotta take this.” He moves to sit up, but looks up at Etsuko at the last second.
She grins and nods towards the door.
“Go get em, tiger.”

"Y/n, please be rational about this. Can we talk about what happened-“ Akashi’s footsteps were heard rapidly and loud as he tried to catch up to you.
You looked back to see the worried expression on his face but sighed as you continued walking, “No it was nothing, now get me the new Developers profiles from HR”
Akashi was taken back by your sudden switch to work mode in what seemed to be a casual conversation but nonetheless nodded, “Okay but...we really need to talk”
You sighed and looked at your (F/C) wrist watch, moving a hand through your hair and looking up you said, “Okay fine I’m free for lunch today for around 15 minutes.”
Akashi nodded and speed walked off into the opposite direction toward the developers side of the building. And asG you walked to your office after a few hours of walking around and seeing your workers you passed by Kiyoko, who was typing on the computer.
Walking towards her, she stopped typing as soon as you leaned on her desk, she looked up.
“How can I help you Miss?”
Sighing you almost let a smile creep over your face as a mundane thought infected your mind, I know it's not part of your job but could you please get me a coffee. I haven’t eaten and I saw the little coffee shop sandwich you had so I was wondering if you could help a girl out! but you suppressed it.
“I need Sony's head developers contact info could you send me it through email as well as the main company directors?” Your tone was leveled.
Not too friendly, not too cold.
Professional.
Kiyoko nodded as she turned to her computer already typing out the info, “Of course, also some media outlets would like to have an interview with you. They keep calling.”
You groaned inwardly but let nothing out, “The company is really busy right now so please decline them all.”
Kiyoko nodded, “Understood,” she stopped typing for a minute to look at you and she flashed you a small smile, “ You look great today Y/n. That color really compliments you.”
You wanted to smile, you wanted to say, Thank you! That shirt is adorable on you!
Instead you let out a nod, “Thanks for the compliment but it is rather inappropriate to call me by my first name, we are in a workplace Ms.Kiyoko.”
Kiyoko’s eyes slightly widened and she resumed typing while saying, “Of course my bad, Miss”
“All is well, even star employees such as yourself have slip ups. Nothing too serious. I will be in my office, if Assistant Akashi comes let him in right away he has important documents.”
Kiyoko nodded and you closed the door to your study. You sat down on your desk and looked around.
Maybe you should redecorate, maybe add some (f/c) accessories and items to your office to make it look more home-
You slapped yourself from the thoughts, although you loved the color (f/c), this was a workplace and the office of the CEO nonetheless!
“Y/n, here are the papers. Lunch is in a few minutes. Should we walk together?”
Grabbing the papers from him you sighed, “You not letting this go are you?”
“No, also Hinata’s joining us for lunch at the cafe”
A small smile crept on your face as your heart became tender for a moment, “Great”
“Attention Viria Tech Employees, Lunch Hour has now commenced” the automated voice rang through the speakers.
“Let’s get going Y/n” Akashi motioned and both you and him walked into the elevator. Where other employees chattered among each other as well as to  look at both you and Akashi.
It was obvious that you were the one in charge, your (tall/short/medium) posture was straighten. You never faltered even when wearing heels. The name tag that only said the words  FOUNDER & CEO,Y/n L/n was enough to educate those who didn’t know.
You and Akashi exited the elevator and out of the 9 stories high building. Hinata ran up to you two and the three of you walked in a diagonal line. You are in the middle of Hinata and Akashi, Hinata wearing a white collared work shirt and Akashi opting for a more casual work style vest.
“Why didn’t Kenma come?” Hinata asked as the trio walked for a few more minutes to the desired coffee shop.
“His team and unit are busy cleaning up the mishap, we should get him something. Akashi write it down”
Akashi nodded and Hinata’s face morphed into a teasing grin, “Y/n we’re on break call him Keiji! You act like strangers!”
You clicked your tongue, “Both you guys and Kenma call me Y/n that causes enough confusion in the workplace. Secretary Kiyoko called me that today and I had to remind her to keep things professional.”
Hinata pouted and Akashi looked at you with a deadpan expression.
“But aren’t you close with Kiyoko? You let her have a week off to enjoy her engagement party that you were invited to and you didn’t even go!” Hinata let out.
“I’m her employer I have to give her time off and the sentiment was sweet but it would not be appropriate-“
“It's clear that she thinks of you as a friend and a boss, why-“
“We’re here, let’s hurry before a line forms” Akashicut off both you and Hinata’s conversation.
The three of you, or mostly  Hinata and Akashi frequented the shop to where the workers knew who they were and their orders.
On rare days like today you would go with them and order a (fav drink) to drink and another small add on.
Grabbing the orders, the three of you walked to the usual table in the corner of the shop where the sun hit. And for a moment you felt like it was the olden days, where you, Shouyou and Keiji would go to a coffee shop and talk about Shouyou’s boyfriend problems.
“Y/n, earth to y/n!” Hinata spoke, snapping you out of your thoughts.
“Yes, sorry I dozed off Hinata” you let out refocusing your look toward him.
He pouted, “We’re not on the clock Y/n-Chan! Stop calling me by my last name”
A wave of sadness crashed into you but you quickly recovered, “of course my bad Shouyou.”
“Why haven’t you changed your last name anyways? “ Akashi asked.
Hinata turned bashful, “We still haven’t decided whos gonna take who’s name….”
A small laugh left you and you shook your head, “Sounds about right”
Hinata grinned, “ You should laugh more y/n-Chan! Maybe we should get you a boyfriend”
Your face turned serious, “Of course not, I don’t have time for a romantic relationship the company is doing well right now. Once we get over this mishap and finalize the deal with Zony we will be way over the expected profit margins. Which means maybe we can open a sister location and-“
“Y/n, we’re on break” Akashi popped up and you bit the inside of your cheek.
“Sorry, but yeah uhm no boyfriend.” You managed to choke out.
Hinata looked at you and so did Akashi and then they switched to look at one another and it was like they we’re telepathically speaking.
Hinata nodded at Akashi and asked, “What happened last night Y/n?”
You felt your blood slightly boiled as you narrowed your eyes at your assistant, “Keiji, telling Shouyou was completely unprofessional-“
“There it goes, your favorite word.” Akashi let out, “It happened when I wasn’t on the clock and as your childhood friend  first and assistant second, I told him because I’m worried”
You huffed out and looked at Hinata trying to reassure him, “Nothing happened Hinata”
“Shouyou, I know you're lying when you pull that professional speak and tight lip smile outside the office” Hinata confronted.
You sighed, they had finally worn you down, “Find! My stalker was there somehow, during the meeting with the investors and he cornered me into the bathroom.”
“Y/n?! Did you scream for help?!”
You shook your head, “The investors were in a nearby table,  I would have caused a scene! Luckily the security noticed him and were extremely professional and discreetly got rid of him.”
“Y/n….” Hinata let out, his big brown doe eyes reflecting sadness and worry. Your heart clutched at the sight.
“I’m fine nothing happened and the investors did their part. It all went well besides that!”
“Y/n, I think we should invest in security for you. A body guard perhaps?” Akashi let out.
Hinata nodded, “Yeah! They can keep you safe and-“
“No, I don’t need anyone constantly by my side like a hound out of business hours”
“An when do business hours stop for you huh?” Akashi remarked, “I know you slept in your office Y/n to  help  ease the workload on the developing team”
You blood rushed to the tip of your ears and your eyes darted away, playing with your hands you scoffed.
“Please Y/n? Pretty pleaseee” Hinata pleaded like whenever he needed a few more dollars in college.
There was a lump stuck in your throat and you looked at your two close friends…...their eyes were full of concern and pleads.
“Okay sure, but just one bodyguard okay?” You spoke.
They both brightened up and Akashi got his notepad, “I will so research and compile a list.”
“And I'll make sure he’s your type Y/n!” Hinata cheered.
A blush made its way to embrace your neck, ears and cheeks, “Shouyou!”
Then laughter was released from your table and even a small chuckle left you. And that moment was warm, or maybe it was your heart. It certainly helped that there was the smell of coffee and baked goods.
Just like old times.
“This is the company that has good reviews….wait let me look it up”
Hinata waited patiently as Akashi type on the keyboard of his laptop. They were in the HR block of the building far from Y/n and her prying eyes.
“I was right, it was the same company that handled the restaurant incident. I’ll call them right now, they seem reputable.”
Hinata nodded vigorously, “Can we pick who to choose?”
Akashi kept clicking on the computer, his eye was knitting together, “On the website it says yes, they have their guards listed…”
“Oh…” Akashi leaned backwards, “So that was Bokuto’s new job huh?”
“Oh the one with the white hair?! He’s your boyfriend!” Hinata asked, Bokuto was tall and broad with big shoulders. His picture was similar to the other ones, black t shirt, black jeans and a white background.
The default pictures underneath in small lettering it said, uniforms are up to the contractor.
“Oh! The one next to him! Y/n would love that one!” Hinata pointed at  Akashi’s screen, leaning in on him.
“The one with all black hair? Grey eyes?” Akashi asked as he swirled the small mouse icon around the picture.
Hinata nodded a grin so wide plastered on his face as he nodded, “Totally! He is 100% her type and looks wise!”
A small laugh left Akashi, “Y/n likes guys like that huh?”
Hinata nodded, “C’mon tell me you wouldn’t want to see Y/n break professional mode when she sees this guy in a suit!”
Akashi choked on his laugh and he looked at Hinata with slight wide eyes. It seemed like Hinata was very mischievous but with the best intentions.
Akashi composed himself, “I would...okay I’ll email the contractors and choose him.”
“Wait what’s his name? Remember Y/n said we would have to text her the guys names so that Kiyoko can make a Tag to enter the building, then he could talk to Kiyoko about getting a official company ID”
Akashi as he closed up his computer as he took a final glance, “Osamu Miya”
Hinata sent you a quick text and continued to be on his phone. While Akashi was on the phone chatting with the contractor and Kiyoko about the new employee.
Once he was done, Akashi’s phone being put down snapped his attention back.
“So Osamu’s been contracted, he will be here next week to shadow Y/n for the day. From there we will set up a schedule for his working hours.”
Hinata nodded, “Are you going to tell her tonight?”
The clock struck 9pm, so work for the both was done for the day. But as they walked outside to the leave, side by side they noticed how both Kenma’s car and yours were still in the Parking Lot.
Akashi sighed, “I’ll tell her tomorrow. If I can give her a work break for at least a few hours tonight it's a win”
A small frown kissed Hinata’s face as he sighed, “Yeah, I wish she’d take some time off.”
Akashi let out a slightly bitter laugh, “As if, you know y/n. All work no play”
Hinata wriggled his eyebrows, “Who knows when Mr.Bodyguard arrives”
Akashi shook his head, “I feel like it will take more than a hot boy in a suit to crack Japans #1 Mogul”

In regards to the newest chapter of Haikyuu!!, can I say how happy I am that Furudate sensei hasn't shown any "quite decent players, probably could go pro, but anyway they didn't for this or that reason" in pro careers?!
It would be so unrealistic and looks more like fanservice than a solid storyline.
Of course, by me saying that, it means I do have a list (?) of people that I think will and won’t go pro. Yes, I know, unless I am Furudate, I can’t really pinpoint who will be pro athletes and who won’t be. But I believe, we as dedicated fans, can all at least make some sensible guesses about that.
Now, moving on. The players that I actually think would go pro so far have appeared in manga as pros (cheers me!). As for the rest of them, I’ll try to break it down by teams coz it’s easier and tidier. Mind you, I’m not athletic and can’t do any sports at all. So technique-wise, I can’t explain much. I go by intuition and deep thinking for pretty much all of my guesses below. So if you’re going to read my analysis (?) or opinion (?), please don’t be too harsh on me just because I can’t give you the logical reasons behind it. Maybe, I should apologize in advance for this.
Karasuno (brace yourself, it’s gonna be long)
Kageyama is the first one. I honestly can’t see any other career choice for him except going pro and finally be a coach after he retired. Kageyama has been playing and practicing volleyball the longest, since he was 7 (Hoshiumi too). And this is the reason why he’s so far ahead of everyone. Also, he’s even worse than Hinata in school, so there’s no way he went to university to me. So, pro it is.
Aside from Kageyama (and Hinata, but I believe I don’t need to explain Hinata to you coz we’re currently the viewers of his journey to be a professional player), I can only see Nishinoya going pro. For me, he stands in the same category as Kageyama. And he’s not going to university with a brain like his. Not trying to be rude or belittling him, but I just can’t see Nishinoya voluntarily enrolling in college. Other than that, Nishinoya is one of the best Libero in the series. It still bothers me even to this day, that he wasn’t invited to the Youth Camp with Kageyama. But I think I understand why: there are just too many great Liberos and The Youth Camp wouldn’t be able to hold everyone there. Besides, there’s the “positioning after receiving thing” that Kageyama had to tell him. Who knows if Nishinoya has been doing that for so long?! An observant scouting staff or professional coach would definitely think it’s a minus point. And there’s the suspension he got too. Idk about other countries much, but I know how Japan really takes care of their background and portfolio. His suspension may be not for something dangerous like drugs, but it definitely marred his resume for the Youth Camp a bit. But Nishinoya has moved past that now and pro career is not so impossible for him.
For the other 2nd years: Tanaka, Ennoshita, Kinoshita, and Narita, they probably won’t go pro. Tanaka has a higher chance though, and deep down I want him to shine more in volley, but I still don’t think so. Tanaka & Kinoshita look like they will go straight down to labor working right after graduation. Ennoshita & Narita were in class 4 and can be assumed as pretty smart, so college and office working probably.
Tbh, I actually can see Asahi be a pro. But, he’s a bit tricky. It all depends on whether he got scouted after Spring High or not. Coz he already chose not to go to university, so it is not impossible as well. As for the rest of the 3rd years, no. I think they have other things (or a career) that they want to pursue and they are smart enough to do it (Daichi and Suga were both in college preparatory class). Though, I would love to see Daichi graduating from sport science or something and go back to Karasuno and be an assistant coach hehe.
For first years, I don’t think Tsukishima & Yamaguchi will go pro. Same like Daichi & Suga, I believe they both have a dream job in their mind, hence why they chose to go to university. Ofc, they can go pro after graduation, but I have little faith in it. Now, I think Tsukishima wanted to be an archaeologist or something along the line (all those dinosaurs!!!), I would be so happy if it turned out to be true.
Aoba Johsai
Except Oikawa, I honestly don’t think the rest of Seijoh will be pros. Maybe Iwaizumi or Kyoutani, but the others, not so much. On a side note, Oikawa (and Hinata) is the most surprising outta the rest of the Haikyuu!! characters. I mean, I never would’ve thought that he’d fly to Argentina and join a league there. I always think he’d join a Japan team. But I love the element of surprise, so I guess it’s fine.
Datekou
Aone has the best chance. Simply because he has all the necessary skills. But he’s so quiet I can’t guess anything from him. I could be wrong, really. Futakuchi and Koganegawa aren’t so bad either, but Idk tho.
Johzenji
I have no idea, truthfully. But I’m leaning more toward the opinion that no one from the team will continue playing professionally.
Kakugawa
I really really wish Hyakuzawa going pro. He’s blessed with the height and also power. With enough practice, he’ll be great. But that’s just my wishful thinking. I can’t really guess him, similar to Aone.
Shiratorizawa
Ushijima is another one of my “definitely going pro people”. He’s just a complete package. He has the sense, the height, the power, the… everything. It would be a big waste for him to just stop. And Ushijima is a volleyball baka too, so he loves the sport too much to not continue playing.
I also think that Goshiki might try to get into pro teams too, maybe after completing college. I don’t think he’d stop just like that. I mean, after Ushijima retired, Shiratorizawa never went to National again. I think that hit him hard. Especially because Ushijima left the team on his hand as the next ace. I would really love to see Goshiki improving himself and kinda get a revenge by getting much much better than before. But, if he doesn’t go pro, it won’t be really disappointing to me. After all, Haikyuu!! always tries to be as close as possible to real life, and in real life not every good player can be pro.
Tendou is a no no. He said he’d stop and he wouldn’t lie about it. Shirabu is confusing, but I think he’d stop in high school or maybe university. He’s not a bad setter, he’s good, but even within Shiratorizawa, his ability is not better than Semi. He was the starting setter just because he was able to blend into the background and be a support for Ushijima so he could shine. So, I really don’t think he got scouted or still pursuing Ushijima.
For the rest of Shiratorizawa, we didn’t see much of them so I can’t make clear guesses. I apologize once again.
Nekoma
Nekoma is also a bit confusing. But, I could see Lev go pro. He’s not super duper amazing per se (I say this based on his performance up to National, idk how he is now okay), but he has the talent and all those height and power. His progress is fast too. I think it’d catch the scouting agents’ attention.
Now, Kenma definitely wouldn’t go pro and we’re shown that XD. Surprise though, I always had a headcanon that he’d be a pro gamer or secretly doing stock trading. Just never thought he’d be a YouTuber and a company board member (or is it CEO?!). Imagine my feeling when my “simply headcanon” became real.
Kuroo is a bit like Asahi, but I honestly believe he is really smart and probably wanna do something else. I wish Yaku would go pro coz he’s a really top caliber Libero (and I would really like to watch his rivalry with Nishinoya grow more), but he didn’t really show much “ambition” for professional career for me. The rest of the members wouldn’t go pro too imo.
Fukurodani
Now, as much as it breaks my heart to say this, I don’t think Akaashi is going pro. He gives me “doctor/scientist/basically high and smart position vibe” somehow. And he’s very clever as well (all those thinking he does lmao), I think he’d pursue something else. So volleyball stopped in high school or university for him. Idk about the rest of Fukurodani though. I definitely wanna see more of Konoha, but the chance is small.
Bokuto >>> pro for me. Been that for a long time. He doesn’t strike me as academically gifted, but I can be wrong ofc. He could: a) straight going pro after high school or b) finished college then go pro. Either way, he’s definitely pro athletes material.
Inarizaki
Atsumu (I’ll call him Atsumu to differentiate him with his twin, even though I prefer last name tbh) also >>> pro. The reason is pretty similar to Ushijima/Kageyama/Bokuto. He’s just that good. Oh on this, I really should mention that I believe all the Youth Camp candidates are going to be or already pros (this by extension means Sakusa & Komori from Itachiyama).
For the rest of Inarizaki, the ones that will be pro are Aran and Osamu. Aran is awesome and one of the best 5 aces in the nation. I know he would get scouted. Whether he go pro after high school or after finishing college, idk. But he will be pro. I would riot if he isn’t. And for Osamu, it would be really cool if he goes to a different team than his twin and they will fight it out on court.
On a side note, Kita is one of my favorite characters and he’s the one that from personality and mindset, can resonate the most with me. But tbh, I’m certain he’s not gonna go pro.
Kamomedai
The only Kamomedai members that would be pro for me are Hoshiumi and Hakuba. Hirugami is high level himself ofc, but idk, I didn’t get the pro ambition vibe from him, similar to Yaku.
Hoshiumi is another one in my list that I think would be revealed as a pro. He’s small, yes, but there’s a wing spiker in Japan National Men’s Volleyball Team that’s around 178cm, and I believe Hoshiumi has grown around this height too. I mean, Hinata has reached 171cm, so it’s possible that Hoshiumi has grown taller as well. Besides, he’s really really really good. He has one of the highest overall skill after Kageyama. He only lose in power coz well, he’s smaller. After all, there’s the promise he made to Hinata. So a showdown between them will definitely happen. So, I think it’s safe to assume Furudate will make him a pro athlete.
Hakuba >>> same vibe as Lev and Hyakuzawa. He’s tall af. Not many people can reach 2 meters (especially Japanese), so he’d bring an advantage for any pro teams.
Oh, I almost forgot to mention Kiryuu. He’s definitely going pro (or he already is?). I really really like and admire him. His character is so wholesome and amazing, he deserves the best. And that translates to the best career too. I would be so disappointed if he isn’t a pro.
There’s also Tsubakihara High School that Karasuno fought in the first round National. Out of those players, the ace (Teradomari) and their wing spiker (Maruyama) have the best chance to get scouted. But there’s little information that we have about them, so I’m not sure. Furudate might not bring them back to the present. This also applies to Ubugawa and Shinzen High School captains from the training camp. Oh, Daishou-kun is also an interesting character, I would love to see him again. But maybe he won’t come back as pro player tho. But him giving commentaries will be very appreciated hehe.
PS: I kinda wish Furudate was a fic writer, lol. They would be able to write absolute masterpiece of crack-pair fics considering how they are able to make sense of Bokuto-Atsumu and Ushijima-Kageyama, lmao. Who else after this? Hoshiumi-Sakusa? Nishinoya-Kiryuu? XD

Chapter 1 - Shields
In the lobby of the Headquarters, the brand new announcement was playing on the flat screen when Kenma took his seat. He hung his head, pretending to read something on his handheld, but using the curtain of hair which now enveloped his face to spy the room. A simple but effective method of an undercover rebel.
Except for receptionists and assistants, most of the people dropped what they were doing to watch the display, a hidden force irradiated from it and coerced men and women to listen. Kenma followed the tendrils of oppression till they approached him, "I created you," he thought, and they dissipated into nothingness.
The digital character he had animated spoke with a professional smile slapped on her face, "Your security is our priority..." Bile rose to his throat at the words, the words he must use to cover the consequences of the umpteenth unjust law the Elders proposed to the Government "for mankind's sake" and that the Government obediently approved. Usually, the Headquarters took the harshest actions during winter holidays, while all minds daydreamed about gifts, lazy days off, trips, family gatherings, friends coming back home to visit. Kenma consequently half-hated that period of the year, his heart throbbing with longing for the beloved ones he had to leave behind.
In the last couple of years, to avoid rendering his soul a savour battlefield, starting December, Kenma tried to enjoy the little daily pleasures only Christmas gave: fairy lights, tree ornaments, seasonal coffee and tea collections, cute Santas popping everywhere. And the snobbish satisfaction to frown upon kitsch decor. He must admit, the lobby he was examining hadn't lost its classy touch in time. Each year the majestic tree showed a cold yet quite pleasant elegance, accomplished thanks to finely decorated glass balls and discreet monochromatic lights.
Towards the end of the announcement, focusing again on the room, he noticed the air must have been still all through it. Kenma waited, hoping someone would dare to mutter a protest in the lion's den. However, luck didn't stick by his side that day either. Finding brave freethinkers or mages fed up of buying Government's bullshit became an impossible mission, or maybe Kenma's standards were too high, and he should just stop searching new fellows right under the higherups' nose. Sitting on a stool at a speakeasy, perhaps his yardstick to evaluate courage would more easily find new allies.
"Good morning, Kozume," Ushijima said in a formal tone as he interrupted Kenma's thoughts, "follow me. Tendou and Semi are waiting for us."
Kenma sat up and launched a questioning glance to the towering man, "I presumed they were still abroad."
"Chief has summoned them for urgent matters. Your help is requested as well." Ushijima stopped abruptly in front of a water dispenser. Bending forward to fetch a plastic cup, he whispered into Kenma's ear, "midnight, at Goshiki's place."
Kenma looked him intently, "I'm here to serve," he pronounced the words of the sworn brothers.
Chapter 2 - A sweet fragrance
Quiet and elegant, the neighbourhood consisted of traditional buildings climbing a hill and of a park occupying its higher part. Since he got off at the last train stop, Kenma had already walked ten minutes, but thanks to the scent of umes soothing his senses, his lazy side didn't complain.
If he must define it, an exquisite residence would be the correct way to describe the house of his client. It didn't shock him that the nameplate at the entrance gave away no hint about the identity of the host. Kenma had indeed previously done any kind of research he could think about; however, nothing more than the company name he was now reading had come out.
Hating to be not adequately prepared for what a job entailed, he hesitated before ringing the bell. He searched for clues, but the most interesting thing he noted was the delicate holly border framing the front gate. A discreet way to celebrate Christmas. Whether the owner had good taste or he was capable of choosing staff who concealed his eventual commoner's upbringing. At times like theirs, commoners had a hard time advancing to the highest ranks of society.
Even though blessed with extremely advanced resources to enhance new technologies with old magical powers, or maybe because scared of the sudden development, their country progressed only on the surface and actually returned to unfair, ancient practices. In the ascent to power, they favoured nobles or rich upstarts who could provide a fake aristocratic lineage. In principle, a pure bloodline became necessary to be someone, because, they said, only abilities transmitted through generations assured stability. And it didn't matter if a family of peasants could unroll a papyrus full of wizards in their ancestry: only conservative aristocracy always kept loyal to the Government. In the end, though, owning a vast amount of money, bowing to the Elders and being refined like a pureblood in every aspect of life were the right requirements to climb the ladder of success in their retrograde society.
Finally, Kenma rang the bell, and soon a butler escorted him in a large genkan. There, a Christmas tree towered the room. While he toed off his shoes, he studied the ornaments. Most of them made of transparent, white or pale gold glass, they reflected or captured the lights, creating a fairytale atmosphere which remembered him of old times.
Of fights between Kuroo and Akaashi about how to embellish the house for Christmas, but particularly the tree. Usually, they would end up with unique solutions: half of the tree decorated in Kuroo and Bokuto's style and the other half gratifying Akaashi's desire; two different trees; draws to establish who would be Ruler of the Winter and decide on any little seasonal object their house would display.
He missed their shared life so much sometimes it was excruciating to breathe. Especially when he thought about Akaashi, the pain strangled his throat. For what small comfort it could be, at least Kuroo and Bokuto were sent away together, and for how much incredible it might seem, Kenma still managed to have news about them from time to time thanks to their sworn brothers. But Akaashi was chosen for the riskier mission, and he couldn't afford to try and contact any of them, his isolation far worse than Kenma's.
Once again lost in his memories, he found himself already in a meeting room, sat across what must be the host's chair, still empty. The setting reminded more of a personal study than a business room. Not that any pictures packed the shelves or the desk, but vases, bookends, coffee table books revealed the same tread leading to a nerdy person who liked thunders, owls and trees.
The moment Kenma started to connect the dots, his lungs constricted, a fist grabbed his stomach and made him wheeze. He wanted to hope, though he wouldn't delude himself.
"Sorry for the wait," a velvety voice said.
His tongue now frozen, Kenma didn't reply. No one approached him. Nothing happened for several seconds, or minutes, Kenma couldn't say. As he noticed the man's laboured breaths, he mustered up the courage to turn towards him. "Keiji," he muttered.
The given name shattered Akaashi more deeply than the initial surprise: he closed his eyes, and after he reopened them, they widened, filling instantly with tears. When they hit the floor, the air filled with a sweet fragrance of jasmine while vines bridged the gap between Akaashi and him.
Gentle tentacles reached for Kenma's wrist and circled it. He couldn't resist but to smell one of the blooms. However, the instant his nose touched the petals, all disappeared. Akaashi bowed his head briefly, "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have." His face was paler than milk. "I believe your office failed to tell me that Sugimoto-san wasn't available today."
Kenma stood up. In an attempt to reign over his trembling, he clenched his fists. "Seems so." The thunder roared inside of him, threatening to manifest as Akaashi's powers had just done.
"Let me introduce myself," Akaashi husked, "I'm Akinori Hiro, Ceo of Safety Net Labs." A wobbly smile accompanied the lie. He side glanced to a vase, and white lilies blossomed in it.
At the sight of his favourite flowers, calm descended on Kenma like a balm. The implication of Akaashi's gesture gave him the confidence to say more than two words. "You should keep up with the season, Akinori-san. Lilies are out of place in winter."
"There are parts of us which are always a bit out of place. But it's our little secret, Kozume-san, isn't it?"
