Hair

I’m going to give demonstrations on 4 types of hair textures.

Straight, wavy, curly and 4c.

Always draw a sketch of what ever hair you want to draw. So on the head we all have hairlines so find the hairline. Now now matter what hairstyle find the root of the hairstyle. What you need to do is draw the hair from the root of the head in chunks. Drawing every strand of hair will take forever and won’t look that good. You need to take the hair into sections. Also give them volume, hair is never just flat and sticks to the head. Hair is full of layers, textures and motion.

When the sketch is done time to color over or under it, this all depends on you.

The brushes i use for outlining the basic idea of straight and wavy hair is the dry ink brush. I will draw up the general shape of each chunk section i created, then i will draw a few smaller lines inside of them. I create a layer under the layout of the hair to color it in by using the round paint brush. Once thats all said and done i blend the first layer in with the vine charcoal brush. I do this by blending the inside of the chunks tiny line ends inward or outwards to give it a hair like look. I clean up the edges with a soft airbrush eraser. I then create another layer on top pic out a slightly darker color from the original then i do the process over again. Line the parts that needs shedding with the dry ink brush then blend it in with vine charcoal. Now for highlights of the hair i add a new layer and set it to add, again still use the ink brush just scribble a bit in the center of the hair chunk them blend it out just a little bit. Lower the shine opacity to 40. If its still to shinny u can just adjust it to whatever to try snd fix it. I then use the vine charcoal brush for blending the hair in.

Now for the next two hair textures I used the the 6B pencil to create the little curls for curly hair and for thicc 4c hair i used the dove lake brush.

When i draw 4c hair i only use the dove lake brush and clipping mask tool for every aspect of it.

So for 4c hair its very easy just us the dove brush as the vase layer brush grab your color then color over your sketch. Make sure the end and side of your hair has a lighter look to it, your pen pressure is key to making the hair look good. Your hair must look thick and full then slowly fade out to a nice puff look. Next create a new layer on top and grab a darker color from the base or use the multiply layer to have the color darken for you. Now again pen pressure will be your friend, find where ever needs shading then color it in. Where ever needs the most shading make it dark then have the pen pressure loosen, have the brush fade to light. It gives the hair a nice textured and layered look. For light use the add layer and do the same thing you did with shading with the lighting. Let the light be bright at where it hits then slowly fade it out with the dove brush.

I enjoy the lighting layer to be on 70 because of how bright the hair looks but thats just my preference.

When it comes to curly hair start by drawing as many thick curls as you can with the 6b brush. Once thats done make a new layer under it find a slightly lighter color from the base then use the dove brush and color under it. Have the little pieces of the brush stick out of the curly chunk of the hair to give off the look of little hair Strands coming out. Now make a layer above the first clip mask it then create the layer as multiply. Create curls on top of the first batch for where shading needs to be. Now for lighting , new layer, add, then grab the dove brush and color where the lighting hits. Have it slowly fade out as it gets closer to the darker parts of the hair,
