spill girl why they whining
Omg so. A lot of the recent HT launches have had pretty much the same colors repeated over and over, but Specifically the one that was released on saturday! Really just, as a majority, shades that are near exact dupes for polishes that have already been dropped very recently. And so fans of the brand are kind of taking a minute to complain abt the way that a collection will be hyped up, only to be completely identical to stuff already in the catalog. Me, complaining and talking about Colors are two of my favorite things, so I was gonna read all of it anyway, but I also totally agree. Also the last color story is kind of not a complimentary color palette, imo. Brown, aqua, neon pink/coral, yellowish taupe, and primary purple?
Tumblr media
In particular, these two "new" shades are the ones making everyone lay on the ground dead, bc they are just. There's an ultra bright coral and an ultra bright aqua shade in like every release.
Tumblr media
Brands obviously will make multiple polishes in a similar color family- especially once they have a large catalog. But HT has a ton of color families they haven't even touched yet, in favor of making mostly Purples, Blues, Aquas, and Corals. Ppl aren't loving these two either tbh:
Tumblr media
The sorta Sandy color, I do think is different Enough, but the purple is very... tsk tsk... Because the brand also just dropped a purples-only release very recently. I think it's interesting to see! Because HT is a newer brand, only around for a few years- and, ultimately, an Influencer Brand. Since it's owned by one person, and the creator of this brand is designing the polishes herself, there's an element of just. Making a lot of polish in her personal fav colors! Which normally end up being very saturated, very cool toned, with a strong preference for purple.

I'm sorry, but what this Monaco anon wrote seems like pure bullshit. K is definitely not good PR for Max and at this point she is even harming Penelope's image, see the episode of the photo with the black woman. Her family destroyed his image in Brazil. And Max doesn't even use that "family man" PR. He has hardly ever mentioned Penelope and acknowledges K only a couple of times a year. If you don't follow K, you don't have this "family man" content with Max. He's not earning a single coin from being a "family man". What does it mean that Sophie follows people who collaborate with K? She follows over 6k people, and has some very random folows, like Playboy magazine and even that Georgia Toffolo with whom Max hooked up once over 6 years ago. Who must have gotten K the Vogue NL job was her agency, as they have collaborated on previous issues (it's on their instagram page), not Sophie. She is Belgian, not Dutch. The agency also must have chosen the motorsport theme to get Max's hype, as K is such a failure as a model/influencer and almost no brands collaborate with her. Max had to speak out last year because Pérez's fans threatened his family, even Victoria's children and Penelope. It wasn't just a case of another rumor of K cheating on him in Monaco/Miami/Brazil that he will never speak in public because it's unnecessary. Sophie has posted just once since the threats. I don't agree with her talking about Pérez and Carola, but threats are unacceptable. Also, keep in mind that Max's family and friends were much more supportive of Dilara than they are of K, and it has been like that even before all of her controversies. Still, no one ever used Dilara for good PR for Max like George's PR is using Carmen, for example. Max stays with K due convenience and laziness to start a new relationship, or even deep down he loves her a little bit (I doubt it, as neither seems comfortable with each other). I think he doesn't care about her using his image to get fame. Barely comparing, reminds me of Kimi and Minttu. She achieved a lot in Finland by being his wife and she also had her controversies, such as misogynistic statements in interviews and making fun of Lewis' clothes on Instagram.

Influencers and the Slow Fashion Movement: If Fast Fashion is Bad Why is Everyone Buying into It?
In this week's required reading Domingos et. al research and discuss trends and the history of slow fashion. Slow fashion is about buying wearable items with the intention of making them last and cutting down on the amount of clothing bought. According to Domingos et.al, one of the main focuses of slow fashion is that it ‘promotes a change in the consumer mindset that encourages a preference for quality over quantity'.
Slow fashion is still a relatively new concept, as it has only been academically discussed since 2008, with the negative effects of fast fashion on the environment only being discovered in the past two decades. Slow fashion lessens the negative effects that the fashion industry has on the environment, and promotes more sustainable practices. By buying more sustainably, and buying less. companies would produce less, resulting in less greenhouse gas emissions, which would alleviate and slow humans' contributions to global warming.
Tumblr media
Case Study: Shein Hauls
As disccused in the 2021 Youtube video report by DW Planet A, Shein is an online fashion store that has raised a lot of concerns over it's practices in recent years due to the nature of the site and the goods it sells.
Shein has no physical stores, and its headquarters and manufacturers are all based in China with little information about the company's operations and supply chains. In fact, on the global fashion transparency index, Shein is ranked last. Shein sells clothes for ridiculously cheap prices, with around 9,000 new items being added to the site each day. With low prices and large amounts of goods to be made, the fact Shein is so unclear with its supply chain causes concern for the welfare of its employees.
So, how is Shein still making tens of billions of dollars each year?
Two of the most effective ways Shein has used it's marketing to expand it's reach and attract new customers is through it's use of celebrity ambassadors and it's self-sufficient marketing campaigns,.
Shein has previously used big celebrity names, like Katy Perry and Lil Nas X, as well as influencers to promote it's products. By associating the brand with high profile celebrities and transparent influencers, Shein markets itself as a reputable company, even though consumers may not know anything else about the brand.
With the low price of Shein's clothes, customers are able to buy large quantities of items, leading to the phenomenon of Shein hauls taking over social media communities.Social media users film themselves opening their Shein orders, using the hashtag #SheinHaul, to create a sort of frenzy and hype around the products, with causes more shoppers to want to buy into the trend.
This gives Shein a solid self-sufficient marketing campaign that basically runs itself to keep buyers interested, with digital communities crating their own demand for the product.

Well, as I’m reading through lobotomy I’m piecing together whether “trans medicine” is the new medical scandal. Time will tell but mostly the concerning part is the rise of transgender children and teens. I think the pattern seems similar to how lobotomy was viewed back in the 1950s.
Lobotomy
Majority of people viewed it favorably and encouraged their friends and family to receive lobotomy.
Most of the patients were gay people and autistic/schizophrenic/depressed people
Was known to “save lives.”
News media hyped up the procedure as the cure for people’s mental illness
Government continues to lie to the people how lobotomy is really effective by showing photos of people being happy.
People who reported early symptoms and severe complications was ignored.
Many children were also influenced to receive lobotomy but they are too young to consent.
During those times, nobody was really conducting long term negative complications of lobotomy until years later when people reported being disabled due to brain damage.
People who viewed lobotomy negatively was also dismissed.
The procedure is irreversible because it damages nerve endings in the brain.
Was part of a social contagion that spread rapidly.
Government won and cashed in a lot of money.
Trans medicine
Majority of people views trans medicine favorably.
Most the patients are gay people and autistic/schizophrenic/depressed people who identify as being transgender.
People are saying that medically transitioning “saves lives” and they can become their “real selves.”
News media are hyping up and re-branding trans medicine as “gender affirming care.”
Government reports how people report feeling “happy” after their transition.
Detransitioners who experience complications are largely ignored.
Many children who identify as transgender is being encouraged to medically transition.
There is no one documenting children who are on puberty blockers and being on hormones. People who are trying to study this are being fired in their jobs because it’s transphobic to question the narrative.
Anyone who challenges trans ideology is called a hater or bigot.
The procedure is irreversible because people can’t get their breasts, uterus and penis back. Long term effects of hormones also cause infertility and sexual dysfunction which are also irreversible.
Is a social contagion that is spreading rapidly among society.
Government wins and makes a lot of money.
So is history repeating itself and this would be lobotomy 2.0? I’m noticing the pattern in which lobotomy used to be popular, it was largely young women and gay people getting them. I looked into people who’s also getting trans surgeries and its mostly young women and gay people. I mean, common sense tells me it’s impossible to change your sex and if it was possible, we don’t have the technology for it as of this date. But I do see the patterns from the past to now. My biggest question is why is this occurring? That’s a big mystery to me.

Happy 20th Anniversary Robots In Disguise!
This year, and today in particular, marks the 20-year anniversary of Transformers Robots in Disguise airing in the United States.  This was the official English language dub of the Japanese show Transformers Car Robots, which aired in Japan the year before.   This show and it’s accompanying toy line were a big shift in the Transformers brand and affected how things moved forward in the new millennium.  It was also a big influence on me and this website in it’s early years, so both the brand and TFW2005 may not be what it is today without it.
We hope you will read on after the break to check out our celebration of Robots in Disguise on it’s 20th!
Intro
The following is not a comprehensive article on the show proper, but rather a trip down memory lane from my personal perspective.  It was a period of change in my life, in the fandom, in the brand, and in the world – all happening at once.  Robots in Disguise was smack dab in the middle of it all and I think that’s why it still resonates with me all these years later.  For a deeper dive into the world of Robots In Disguise you can check RIDForever.info, a site I maintain just about RID and Car Robots. The 2021 updates are here, and the 2017 round of updates are here.  I’d also suggest checking the TFWe issue all about RID over on the 2005 Boards.  Now, onto today’s festivities…
The Show
RID, and yes I say RID as if it is the only RID.  If you must reference that other RID show and it’s off-shoots, refer to it as RID 201x, thanks. 😊 RID aired during the Fox Kids programming block on a Saturday morning, with additional episodes set to air each weekday during the afternoon hours.  Instead of stretching the show out over the course of 30+ weeks with only a new ep each weekend, they were going to blaze through it non-stop.  By the end of the first week, we would have been 7 eps in.  That however hit a big roadblock due to 9/11 just three days later.  While some local markets did air the episodes, many larger city networks, and especially east coast markets, stuck with news coverage.   Many of us did not catch the early episodes on TV the first go around.  In addition, several of the episodes got pulled from TV due to depictions of buildings being destroyed and other similar visuals which understandably could upset children that just experienced 9/11.  So right off the bat, the new millennium and new era of Transformers were dealing with a new reality.
The show, for those that don’t know – was a weird one-off in Transformers history.  We had G1 and then the G2 remixes for a bit.  Beast Wars came on the scene and ran all the way through 2000 with it’s successor – Beast Machines.   During the Beast Wars era – Japan did a couple of their own Beast Wars shows, non-CGI extensions of what we saw in the US.   Their market wasn’t quite ready for full CGI so they stuck with traditional anime.  When Hasbro decided to continue Beast Wars into Beast Machines, Takara went a completely different way – a traditional animated show which brought back Autobots and “Decepticons”, mixing them in with the beasts.  They focused the toys on a couple new and complex molds, then filled the rest of the line with repaints of previous toys.  Old 2nd tier Beast Wars toys, G2 Laser Prime, and even some Generation 1 molds in the form of the Combaticons got new life as new characters in this show, capped with the biggest TF of them all at the time – a repainted G1 Fortress Maximus, now Brave Maximus.  It was the prototype for what the Transformers brand did for years to come – repainting old toys into new characters.  Universe, Classics, Botcon, and even some Generations runs used this method to give us some great toys in the 00s.
While there is a very complicated and long explanation for how every single Japanese show is one continuity, to someone casually starting with Car Robots it was a refresh, a new story, a new arrival on Earth.  The Autobots vs the Predacons, and eventually the Combatrons/Decepticons. It was a hard cut from the last 5 years or so of CGI Beasts.  Hand drawn traditional animation featuring vehicle Transformers.  It wasn’t G1, but many of the folks who grew up with G1 were just getting out of college around this time.  They were rediscovering their childhood love of Transformers through Beast Wars, flea market finds, raids on their parents’ attics and basements, and for the internet savvy – imports of Japanese reissues from Takara.  It was a perfect storm of nostalgia; a return to Autobots and Decepticons was welcomed by kids and adults alike.
RID and TFW2005
In the years leading up to Car Robots, I was just getting into the internet, coding, design, some digital music, and all the possibility that came with it.  Beast Wars, especially when it hit Season 2/3 and the inclusion of G1 lore, really got me focusing on Transformers again as a hobby.  I eventually combined the two newfound hobbies into one and Transformer World 2005 was born.  At no point did I ever think it would last 20+ years and take over my life in the way it did.  I started the full version of TFW2005 around April 2000, with some starts and stops before that.  That was right around when Car Robots started airing in Japan.  Through the magic of 56k internet, I was able to connect with folks in Japan and get them to send me VHS tapes of Car Robots.  Really nice, high-quality tapes too, I still have them hehe.  To the younglings reading – try to picture this: no youtube, no video sharing. The concept of streaming anything did not exist yet. Napster and the eventual peer to peer stuff hadn’t fully kicked off.  Plus, we were all viewing the internet on giant computers in our rooms at the speed of 1x on your phone.  Less than 1 bar 3G mobile speeds today.
Yes, someone recorded episodes from TV to video tape over there, did that a couple weeks at a time, then physically mailed them across the world to me, who then got them on the internet.  Can you imagine waiting weeks to watch an episode of TV the size of a twitter profile avatar?  Crazy.  Uploading a full episode to the internet was a big pain in the ass, not easily done.  I decided to get a converter that allowed me to plug my VCR into the computer and encode the tape into digital format.  From there, it was reduced using Microsoft’s WMV technology so that the episodes were about 5 MB each.  30 minute episodes at 5MB each. Dimensions – 176 x 144 pixels.  4k video today – 3840 x 2160 pixels.  You can imagine that video looked like crap.  But we didn’t care – we were blown away.  Old school animation, vehicles, some cool Japanese anime vibes, it was what we as G1 fans kinda had in the back of our heads on what Transformers should be in a new era, and we were seeing it.  Most of us had no clue what they were saying or what was going on.  Also didn’t care.  I still to this day think CR/RID is better like that.
So one of the first things TFW2005 did on the internet was provide these super small windows into Car Robots and what was going on in Japan. It helped get US fans hyped up for what Transformers could be. It got us wanting the toys, and importers bringing the Takara toy line over were moving serious product.  It helped swing Hasbro, who was planning to return to Autobots and Decepticons again down the road, to move that schedule up.  Instead of running Beast Machines until 2002 and then starting what we now know as the Unicron Trilogy, it was cut short.  Robots in Disguise as a toy line and show came over in 2001, ran fast and hard for a year with non stop releases, got extended because it did so well, and then faded into the Universe line of repaints.  The new millennium of Transformers was here and Robot In Disguise kicked it off with a bang.
Wrap Up
As we all continue with collecting Transformers now, regardless if you tagged into the fandom during G1, Beasties, the Unicron Trilogy, the Movies, or just yesterday – let’s take the time to give Car Robots and RID some props!  It set the tone for what the new millennium of the brand would be.  It gave us some toys ahead of their time.  It solidified the repaint as an accepted thing in the hobby. And it gave us one crazy 39 episode run of TV that’s still a fun ride 20 years later.
For those that would like to learn more about RID and Car Robots – I still maintain a Robots in Disguise website that archives everything I have or came across.  There is a lot there if you want to go on a tour of all the awesome Car Robots and Robots In Disguise era stuff.  Check it out at RIDFOREVER.INFO! FIYAH!
Let us know what you think and remember from the good old days of RID on the 2005 Boards here!
Epilogue
If someone over there at Hasbro is reading – can someone please figure out who owns the rights to the show in the US market and then get it out on DVD in full, finally?  Work all that funky licensing stuff out (if there is any) and get it done.  The US has never had access to it via an official release.  Maybe get it up on YouTube like G1?  Something.  Announcing plans for that before the end of 2021 would be a nice 20th anniversary tribute.

AG Lines For Dummies
Your Truly Me is not a Create Your Own.
AG has made many character lines when it comes to their 18 inch dolls. Here’s a breakdown of the various lines, and which dolls are included.
Historical Line
AG started as solely a company that sold dolls with historical narratives, and the original dolls include Samantha, Molly, and Kirsten. Felicity, Addy and Josefina soon followed. The best friend characters are best known from this line, although they have also appeared in the GOTY line. The best friend dolls were often released in order to hype customers up for upcoming movies, Logan Everett of the contemporary line being the exception. The only best friend doll who is movie-less is Ivy Ling, as Julie Albright’s movie was scraped after the mass retirement of all the friend dolls, in favor of an Amazon special.
The Historical line was originally intended as a way for feminine children to see themselves in history, which is often a male dominated scene. At the time of creation, dolls like Barbie that depicted older role models were popular, and marketing dolls meant to be the same age as little girls was unheard of. The line was originally strictly for ages 8-12, however in recent years has been marketed more towards nostalgic adults and collectors.
The Historical line still exists, but is constantly fluctuating, often falling to the wayside. It is no longer the main interest of American Girl’s buyer base.
Subsections of the Historical Line include Beforever, and the 35th anniversary collection.
Truly Me Line
Known as also (but not limited to) “Just Like You,” “American Girl of Today,” “My American Girl,” and “Innerstar U,” the (currently known as) Truly Me line is a collection of blank slate dolls who are bland enough in their features to resemble many different kids.
Until recently, these dolls were marketed as being the doll version of you. However, with American Girl’s newfound commitment to diversity, they have tried to stray away from that notation, emphasizing that the doll is your best friend, rather than literally being “you.”
Truly Mes come in meet outfits that represent the children’s fashion of the times. Until the release of the “Trendy Girls,” also known as the “Street Chic Girls,” all Truly Mes came wearing the same meet outfit, however boy Truly Mes and girl Truly Mes have differing meets from one another.
Boy Truly Mes were introduced to the line in 2017 with the contemporary character release of Logan Everett. This was met with a lot of Evangelical pushback. No new masculine Truly Mes have been released since 2017, however the original masculine Truly Mes are still available to purchase.
The “Trendy Girls,” formally known as the “Street Chic Girls” were released in 2021 as part of American Girl’s diversity plan. While much of the reception was positive, the line had issues such as including a white character in a line heavily influenced by Black culture, and not researching well enough in certain areas to properly represent things such as hip-hop. Because of this, AG has dialed back their original campaign plan for these dolls, and now simply refers to them as “The Trendy Girls.”
Currently there are three Trendy Girls, each with colourful hair and a meet outfit unique to them.
Girl Of The Year
The Girl of The Year line began in 2001, and continues to be added to each year, with tradition being that the new girl is announced on Good Morning America. Girl of The Years are typically developed two years in advance, with the exception being the Gabriela McBride fiasco, in which Oprah called American Girl out for lack of diversity within the line, and AG responded by (poorly) producing a Black character in less than six months.
The Girl Of The Year line became popular during the year of Marisol, the third doll to be released in the line, and continued this popularity through the 2000s and 2010s. In the 2010s, Girl of The Years were often accompanied with movies and apps.
Until the latter 2010s, with the exception of the early girls (who had a weird release/retirement schedule), Girl of The Years retired at the end of each year. Currently, GOTYs are available for multiple years, and are available in stores such as Costco even after retirement.
GOTYs often have a color theme associated with them, as well as a main interest their collection is based around. Popular interests amoung the girls include dance, water sports, and environmentalism.
Now a days, the Girl of The Year line fluctuates in popularity. GOTYs often don’t resonate with adult collectors due to lack of diversity in doll design. Parents are also beginning to notice the lack of diversity and repetitiveness, with recent dolls like Luciana and Joss selling out again and again, while dolls like Kira fall to the wayside.
2017 Contemporary Line
The 2017 contemporary line was a line of three dolls released along side the ill fated Gabriela McBride. Gabriela was a rushed Black character who was not the original intended GOTY, and was made as a response to the anger about the lack of diversity within the GOTY line.
American Girl still wanted a way to release their originally intended Girl Of The Year; Tenney Grant with her “best friend” doll, Logan Everett, and so they created a contemporary line consisting of Tenney, Logan and Z Yang. Z Yang was an Asian character with a very similar appearance to JLY 30, and was based off an American Girl web series. Logan was the first (and only) boy character released, and faced controversy due to being a white character with the culturally significant Kaya mold.
This contemporary line released alongside Gabriela, and Tenney Grant was heavily marketed, with Z and Gabriela being mainly side pieces.
With the exception of Tenney and her collection, Gabriela and Z experienced many quality issues, and much of their collections were rereleases of previous products.
This contemporary line quickly retired, with no additions or mentions of it since.
Gabriela and Tenney Grant are still available at Costco, however Z has not had a rerelease, and goes for $200+ second hand despite quality issues.
World, By Us
World By Us is an upcoming line with three confirmed characters of colour, and was created in response to the growing criticism of their clear favoritism of white dolls with light features. This line is aimed towards older children, with the characters having light makeup, and attending middle school. The line seeks to talk about real world events/issues, particularly racism, in a kid friendly way. There is speculation this line will expand to talk about more marginalized identities in the future, with AG dabbling into “controversial” territory with Kira and Courtney exploring the LGBT community, and Joss being the first visibly disabled character (something they’ve seemed reluctant to do since the public reception of Gwen- a houseless character). This line is also rumored to be collaborating with the high end children’s clothing brand, Janie and Jack.
Create Your Own//CYO
American Girl: Create Your Own is an official GUI that lets you design your own doll with the various options given to you for $200. These options include 6 different skin tones, the Classic, Josefina, Sonali, Jess, and Addy molds, as well as exclusive outfits and accessories, and more. The CYO GUI officially released in 2017, and has expanded since then. The “CYO experience” is available in flagship stores, but is also available online. Dolls typically take 6+ weeks to arrive, and the CYO line also has a clothing design section where you can design various pieces of clothing with official prints.
The CYO line has been both praised and criticized for having exclusive features such as a light toned Addy mold, and a dark toned Jess mold. The CYO line also has an exclusive pink hair colour, and you are able to give your doll mismatching eye colors.

curious bc i've never played melty blood or gotten to know tsukihime sion, whats your criticism of fgo sion? from my brand new to her eyes the only thing i really disliked about her in the lb3 prologue was that silly twintails hair. otherwise she seemed like a cool new ally and interesting character, but i recall you were disappointed with her?
My problem with FGO Sion is that they essentially pseudoservanted her without the pseudoservant. She shares almost nothing with the original Sion barring her name and color scheme.
This might take a bit, melty Sion as a person is very much defined by her backstory.
Sion in Melty Blood is a socially awkward outcast and huge math nerd whose behavior and personality was heavily influenced by the ostracization of her family and the invention of etherlite. See, the Eltnam’s have this mystic code called Etherlite, essentially a string they can use as a whip or as steel wire in battle, but it also allows them to connect to people’s minds by attaching to them, allowing the Eltnam’s to read minds, download memories and experiences, even hack into their bodies and assume control.
Such an invention was seen as horrific even by the families in Atlas (who are the ones considered too extreme for the Clock Tower), so they ostracized the Eltnam family and Sion didn’t exactly grow up with any friends. it didn’t help either that her ancestor was Zepia Eltnam Oberon, one of the most fearsome vampires on Earth.
Due to all that, Sion ended up being a loner, focused on research and developing her genius mathematics skills. Using standard Atlas spells, she partitioned her brain into 7 parts to allow her 7 independent thought processes at once, while also speeding up how fast she could think. She started seeing everything in terms of statistics, and every interaction - fights included - were just math problems to work out. By stealthily hooking her opponent up to her etherlite during a fight, she could instantly download all their data, create a mental chart of everything their opponent might try, and instantly come up with several plans to counter them with success rates included.
Inevitably, one night everything goes wrong and she loses a fight to Zepia Eltnam, who kills her bodyguard Riesbyfe (she gets better eventually), eats everyone in sight, then vampirizes her to make a successor before flying off to Misaki Town. Sion then realizes she needs to ask for help, or she’s doomed to start eating people.
So all the appeal of Melty Sion is watching this supercomputer of a person be forced to figure out how people actually work. She meets Shiki Tohno while downloading and reading the data of everyone in Misaki Town, she gets surprised that she’s beaten during their fight because Tohno is an idiot that wouldn’t make the most optimal moves, then she’s forced to learn how to just ask people for help instead of hacking them. There’s a lot of fun in watching her slowly figure out things like basic interactions and processing emotions. She even goes from having a crush on Shiki to realizing maybe she’s just fond of him because she didn’t really have friends before and that she might have a thing for Riesbyfe. By the third Melty Blood game she’s adjusted to everyone and is part of a vigilante group / gag character trio where she, Riesbyfe, and Satsuki roam the alleyways of Misaki Town at night to hunt monsters and keep it safe for people walking home. She’s so delighted (despite her blank face) at having friends that she ends up being the only Tsukihime heroine who gets along with all the others, even becoming close friends and science partners with Kohaku.
So it was pretty disappointing to me 2 years ago to get hyped for months at Sion coming to FGO, only to get a genki girl calling herself Sion and being a completely different character. She’s a pseudoservant without the pseudoservant.
The sad thing is if she was actually a new character I would have liked FGO Sion very much. She’s cute and funny, and brings something new to the Chaldea team. Unfortunately seeing her is just a reminder to me that Tsukihime as a series only exists now to be plundered by FGO to tease fans with.
That being said, LB3 IS my favorite Lostbelt and I’m excited to see the rest of it! Just not... Sion.

headcanon & aesthetic / airport fashion
highlighting his favorite looks / styles that he wore during the earlier years of his career — airport fashion, and the fans dub him as a fashionable’ idol. whether it’s monochrome or a mirage of colors, he’s probably sported every style / look up until this point. he takes the airport as a fashion runway, and plans his outfits accordingly. (forewarning: he’s the most pretentious when it comes to fashion out of my three muses — fashion 101 by chung gyujeong & hyeri) / this is all new writing, based on where i see gyu’s headspace for his career in fashion  warnings / none wc / 1016
as a rookie, airport fashion was important as it gave fans / spectators a glimpse of gold star idoldom. as a result, he didn’t get to dress himself often — or entirely dress himself. this meant getting the help of the stylist to put him in random clothes, that fit his mood / image. this paid off as his stylist as mentioned before is one of his close friends, and so spawns a series of outfit collaborations from his stylist.
the old style used to be cool of wearing all black — but let’s be realistic, this was so 2018. mainly, gyujeong started wearing all black in 2017, where he wore a lot of enfant riches deprimes earlier iterations (i hc that he’s one of the first to wear the brand in korea as the brand only started picking up hype around 2019 / 2020). however, erd has a long history of having controversial t-shirts, so he would only wear the logo play and a few jackets here and there — still, the brand remains one of his favorites and a brand he’d love to collaborate with
with the black trend, he kept to a lot of niche brands? he’d play around with feminine brands such as the row, where they have a lot of minimalistic pieces. though, he’d never touch acne studios as it’s some cheap cop out where the quality isn’t set forth more than the price — it’s not worth to him, and it’s just something everyone basically has in his closet. it’s the same with cdg play, and why he refuses to wear cdg. he doesn’t want pieces that everyone in korea can wear, and thus he doesn’t have a lot of things from these brands.
however, that being said — gyujeong during his ‘black wear’ era, would also wear a lot of hedi slimane pieces from hedi’s stint in dior homme (the crinkle skinny jeans his fave, despite his fans saying otherwise). he also took a lot of inspo from hedi’s stint at saint laurent, and collected the 2013 / 2014 debut showcase pieces from the boots (emphasis on the zippers of the boots), and the teddy jackets. the teddy jackets he still wears from time to time as it’s timeless, and still to this day, he continues to say that hedi is the best thing that SLP has ever had and the reason why anthony vaccarello has any base to start with (fight him on this, he’ll support hedi slimane till he dies)
i would say his earlier days created looks that were more coherent and oddly clean — like some of it was baggy and questionable, but there was a crisp look due to the influences him and his friend had around that time.
then, gyujeong decided too many people were wearing all black and he opted for his white era. the white era consisted of more street wear pieces — though, he’s proud to say he’s never owned a virgil abloh piece as he doesn’t respect virgil’s plagiarism. thus, you’ll never see him in virgil’s early pyrex or lv, or even off white. however, he did wear a lot of heron preston and stone island. stone island was something he was introduced to early as it was a brand he grew up with, but the street wear aspect he found more enticing and thus started playing with their various materials.
he appreciates stone island’s nylon fabrics and their occasional goretex.
also, to be classic — gyujeong used to sport a lot of nike, whether it was acg or nike lab. however, that got cut short when platinum began to be sponsored by adidas. as a result, he’s not allowed to wear nike, though he still supports the brand when he can and suggests to people that nike > adidas.
the biggest regret of his airport fashion would be sporting thom browne. before the trend of the white shirts, cardigans and the loafers came to fruition, nobody really wore that much thom browne. as a result, gyujeong wore a lot of coats that played on the mini houndstooth pattern ways, and just plain black. it was warm, yes. but soon after the hype of thom browne became a thing, it was another brand in the dumpsters like cdg to him
he was never a fan of alexander wang? but can’t deny a nice basic black or white t-shirt. as a result, he does own a few wang pieces despite not being that into the brand — he’s mentioned however in an interview that the wang t-shirts are his favorite
marcel everette t-shirts are also his favorites, and fans have caught him sporting the same t-shirt over and over for weeks. however, the t-shirts are all different as he owns more than 30 of the same t-shirt because it’s one of his staples. but fan speculation leads to the hashtag #buygyujeonganewshirt
gyujeong doesn’t care how far they’re traveling on plane. he’s very much fashion over comfort, and as a result have worn one too many weird things over the years that cause a lot of discomfort but look good on camera. these mainly deal with the shoes, where he’ll wear boots — carol christian poell, guidi boots, and margiela’s tabi boots were some of his favs. he tends to really love leather boots, a lot. though lately this fascination has passed and he’s into sneakers now.  however, he’ll never forget how much his feet hurt putting those on and how good he looked in the photos
one thing is certain, however, there are brands that gyujeong refused to wear from the start. he even made a powerpoint and an essay on why he shouldn’t wear these brands to gold star, and those brans are — dolce and gabbana, moschino, mcm, balmain, CDG, goyard, vlone, mcqueen. mainly he considers these brands tacky, and missing the purpose of fashion.
brands he no longer wears on his own picks — balenciaga, prada (to a degree), gucci, tom ford, ami, maison margiela (to a degree), mastermind, alyx — these brands are worn too much in the public eye, and people who think they "love” fashion say they like these brands
brands he loves — chanel, Y3, chrome hearts, rick owens, , crocs, dries van noten, ryo takashima, markaware marka, raf simons archives <3, david casavant, ambush — he loves the brands people have never heard of.
fashion snob? yes x100000000. he’s such a pretentious ass when it comes to fashion i know.
don’t talk fashion to chung gyujeong if ur fav brands consist of dior, gucci, balenciaga, etc. or else he’d get upset and probably yell

Alex Recommends: May and June Books
I must apologise for the late arrival of this post. It should have been up days ago but I’ve been struggling to read much for the last month or so. My head has been very foggy and dark with all of the confusion, anxiety and hate that has been filling my news feeds and I’ve been filled with a desire to combat it. Before this month, I’d have run in the opposite direction from any kind of confrontation but recent events have given me the kick up the butt to actively do better. I’ve been calling out bigotry when I come across it and I’ve noticed that some people, notably my older relatives, haven’t necessarily reacted favorably to the changed, more outspoken Alex. It has been pretty daunting and I’ve worked myself up into fits of rage and tears several times over the last couple of months.
A lot of things have changed for me since my last Alex Recommends post. I’m currently temporarily living in Staffordshire with my boyfriend because my depression got too bad for me to stay at home for much longer. I missed him unbelievably much and I knew that spending some prolonged time with him would help -and it has. Both him and I have spent 12 weeks religiously following all of the rules, so we’re both extremely low-risk for catching and spreading COVID-19 and being together was something that we simply really needed to do. Please don’t hate me for it! In other news, I have also started writing again, which feels amazing. I’m now a few thousand words into a queer Rapunzel retelling that I have lots of ideas for. Maybe I’ll even post an extract or two, when I feel it’s ready to show you.
In the centre of the renewed energy of Black Lives Matter and the undeniable exposure of the horrors that is police brutality, the book blogging and BookTube worlds vowed to uplift Black voices. I wrote a very long, in-depth blog post full of Black-written books and Black book influencers. Please check it out to diversify your TBR and educate yourself on Black issues, which is what every white person should be doing now and always.
June was Pride Month and I tried my best to compile a series of recommendation posts in honour of it. These included gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, non-binary, ace, pansexual and intersex lists. I’ve had some great feedback on this, so I hope you find some fantastic new reads. It felt especially poignant to put them together the same year that one of my childhood heroes came out as an ignorant trans-exclusive feminist. As a lifelong Harry Potter superfan and someone who has repeatedly publicly supported Rowling in the past, I feel the need to clarify where I now stand. I do not support or agree with a single thing that she has said in recent times with regard to transgender people. I’ve never felt my own status as a cisgender female threatened by trans people wanting more rights or believed that children or women were at risk due to their existence.
I read her words more than once and struggled to find any semblance of the woman who wrote the books that have most defined my life. I’m hesitant to say that we can always successfully separate the art from the artist but I will say that it makes sense to me that the Rowling of 2020 is not the same Rowling that wrote Harry Potter. She was a destitute single mother when Philosopher’s Stone was published in 1997 and of course, she is now a million worlds away from that lifestyle. It breaks my heart but it makes sense to me that she has changed beyond belief because her life has changed beyond belief. I’m not and never would make any excuses for her recent behaviour and I have stopped supporting her personally but I will not be getting rid of my Harry Potter books and I will undoubtedly re-read them several more times. However, I am now hugely reluctant to buy any more merchandise or special editions of the books, which saddens me but at the moment, it feels right. There is no coming back for her from this and I will make a conscious effort to keep Harry Potter and Rowling away from my future content. It can be really tough to admit that the people you once really admired aren’t great humans but it’s something that we all have to acknowledge in this case, in order to move forward with our own quests to become our best selves.
It didn’t feel right to post my May recommendations last month as I didn’t feel comfortable promoting my own content in the midst of boosting Black voices. So today I’m bringing you a bumper edition of Alex Recommends. Here are 10 books that I’ve enjoyed since the start of May that I’d love to share with you. Enjoy! -Love, Alex x
FICTION: Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
Tumblr media
Set in the affluent neighbourhood of Shaker Heights, Ohio in the 1990s, two families are brought together and pulled apart by the most intense, devastating circumstances. Dealing with issues of race, class, coming-of-age, motherhood and the dangers of perfection, Little Fires Everywhere is highly addictive and effecting. With characters who are so heartbreakingly real and a story that weaves its way to your very core, I couldn’t put it down and I’m still thinking about it over a month after finishing it.
FICTION: Get A Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert
Tumblr media
When coding nerd Chloe Brown almost dies, she makes a list of goals and vows to finally Get A Life. So she enlists tattooed redhead handyman and biker Red to teach her how. Cute, funny and ultimately life-affirming, this enemies-to-lovers rom-com was exactly the brand of light relief that I needed this month. The follow-up Take A Hint, Dani Brown focuses on a fake-dating situation with Chloe’s over-achieving academic sister and I can’t wait to get my hands on that.
FICTION: The Rearranged Life of Oona Lockhart by Margarita Montimore
Tumblr media
Just before her 19th birthday at midnight on New Year’s Eve 1983, Oona Lockhart finds herself inexplicably in 2015 inside her 51-year-old body. She soon learns that every year on New Year’s Day, she will now find herself inside a random year of her life and she has no control over it. Seeing her through relationships, friendships and extreme wealth, this strange novel has echoes of Back To The Future and 13 Going On 30 with a final revelation that I certainly never saw coming.
NON-FICTION: The Five by Hallie Rubenhold
Tumblr media
Atmospheric and engaging, The Five details the previously untold stories of Polly, Annie, Elisabeth, Kate and Mary-Jane -the women who lost their lives at the hands of Jack the Ripper. Full of fascinating research and heartbreaking accounts of what these women’s lives may have been like, Rubenhold paints a dark immersive portrait of Victorian London and gives voice to these tragic silenced lives. Although we can’t know for certain if these accounts are entirely accurate, they feel very plausible and in some ways, The Five exposes how little time has moved on, when it comes to the public portrayal of single, troubled women.
NON-FICTION: Unicorn by Amrou Al-Kadhi
Tumblr media
From a childhood crush on Macaulay Culkin to how a teenage obsession with marine biology helped them realise their non-binary identity, Unicorn tells the story of how the obsessive perfectionist son of a strict Muslim Iraqi family became the gorgeous drag queen Glamrou. Packed full of humour, honesty and heart, this book will give you the strength and inspiration to harness what you were born with and be who you were always meant to be.
MIDDLE-GRADE: The Super Miraculous Journey of Freddie Yates by Jenny Pearson
Tumblr media
When fact-obsessed Freddie’s grandmother dies, he discovers that the father he has never met may actually be alive and living in Wales. So he has no choice but to grab his best friends Ben and Charlie, leave his home in Andover and go to find his dad! I laughed so many times during this madcap adventure and I know the slapstick crazy humour will hit the middle-grade target audience just right. It’s also a wonderful depiction of small town Britain with a focus on the true meaning of family.
MIDDLE-GRADE: A Kind Of Spark by Elle McNicoll
Tumblr media
When Addie learns about her hometown’s history of witch trials, she campaigns tirelessly to get a memorial for the women who lost their lives through it. This wonderfully beautiful novel gives a unique insight into the mind of an 11-year-old autistic girl with a huge heart. Busting myths about neurodiversity while tackling typical pre-teen drama, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry but most of all, you’ll close the book with a huge smile on your face.
HISTORICAL FICTION: Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell
Tumblr media
In 16th century Warwickshire, Agnes is a woman with a unique gift whose relationship with a young Latin tutor produces three children and a legacy that lasts for centuries. This enchanting, all-consuming account of the tragic story of Shakespeare’s lost son, the effects that rippled through the family and the play that was born from their pain will send a bullet straight through your heart. Wonderfully researched and beautifully written, Hamnet is worth all of the hype.
HISTORICAL FICTION: The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave
Tumblr media
When a vicious storm kills most of the men of Vardø, Norway, it’s up to the women to keep things going but a man with a murderous past is about to come down with an iron fist. At the heart of this dark tale of witch trials, grief and feminism, two women find something they’ve each been searching for within each other. Gorgeously written with a fantastically slow-burning queer romance, Kiran Millwood Hargrave’s first adult novel is an addictive, atmospheric read with a poignant, tearjerker of an ending.
SCI-FI: Q by Christina Dalcher
Tumblr media
When one of Elena’s daughters manages to drop below the country’s desired Q number, she is sent away to one of the new state schools and Elena is about to find out something she’d really rather not know about the new system. Packed full of real social commentary and critique of life as we know it while painting a picture of how things could be even worse (yes, really!), this pulse-racing, horrifying sci-fi dystopian gripped me from the first page and refused to let me go.

Custom Pokemon Gijinka
Shattered Prism’s Gijinka Servitors
This is not the full listing, to see the full form please go HERE.
While this isn’t necessarily an original idea for the Shattered Prism (after all, many creators in the Meta community have had similar ideas concerning servitors, thoughtforms and tulpas in the past) we are more than excited to present our very own spin on created entities fashioned from the likeness of the loveable monsters of the Pokemon franchise! Before we get to that, however, we would like to post a few small disclaimers:
We do not own-- nor have we ever owned-- any facet of Pokemon. We do not claim to be of the official franchise, and we by all means wish for you to support them. In fact, this was made due to our love and nostalgia for Pokemon. That said, those interested in this service are paying for the energy woven to create a servitor in their likeness, and the binding formed to tie this servitor to your spirit; NOT the likeness itself. Basically, we aren’t selling pokemon. We aren’t even selling you beings/creations with appearances and abilities that resemble pokemon. You are paying for the work behind the service. Make sense? Awesome! Let’s move on.
Let’s address their popularity! We know there are a lot of people out there who work long and hard on their servitors, so we at Shattered Prism would like to make something clear: this is NOT a cash grab. We already have a love of Pokemon, and we have worked together to experiment with Pokemon Gijinka Servitors in our off time. We wanted to provide something to the shop with our own unique flare. Time, energy and love goes into these creations, especially since some of us here are die-hard fanatics who have useless pieces of information stored away since their initial US release (stares really hard at Kaida). These gijinkas are made to stand out from anything else that we know of that are offered, and we hope that these qualities make this service unique (not necessarily better or worse) compared to other meta sellers.
On our next point, servitors can be many things, but one thing they are not are slaves. We see our servitors as beings of another caliber. While yes, they do have their own safety features built into their energetic systems which prevents them from going rogue,” they still have thoughts and feelings, and deserve to be treated with respect as any other being, living or otherwise. They are created, yes, but they are not machines. They are not sex toys. They are their own brand of people, and we hold them to the same rules and rights as any other vetted being we otherwise conjure.
Finally, we would like to stress that, as with all things metaphysical, nothing is guaranteed. We can pour all of our time and energy into creating a servitor, but manifestations and other such displays of potency are also dependent upon other factors aside from our labor. This includes the keeper's perspective (meaning a Keeper’s magick ability, sensitivity, energetic blocks and even overall mood) as well as the veil between our world and the astral (some days are easier than others to produce manifestations because the barrier surrounding our plane fluctuates naturally). Please understand that as with all faith-based services, there is a level of faith to be put into these servitors. If you are not satisfied with the outcome of your servitor, no refunds can be issued because the work we expended cannot simply be retracted the same way money can. That in mind, please set it firmly in your mind that this is something you want before making a purchase. No one wins in buyer’s regret.
Now that the formalities are out of the way, we can dive into the fun!
What is a Gijinka Servitor?
Gijinka Servitors are creations designed to resemble pokemon in both their original and unique anthropomorphic forms. If you have no idea what Pokemon is, then we highly suggest looking into jumping into their storyline games to get a good idea about why there is so much hype surrounding them. Regardless, our servitors resemble a specified pokemon in appearance, personality, mannerisms, abilities and overall power. Not only do these Gijinkas look like your childhood (or current) favorites, but they pack a punch to boot! What they are designed to help with depends completely on the Gijinka’s design (what you desire) and inspiration (the general blueprints laid out according to their likeness). We work together to create an intelligent being with character and magickal potential that works fluidly with both characteristics and provides a servitor who will become your spiritual, lifelong partner.
These Gijinkas are practically limitless in potential. Need help with ancestral magick? How about a Ghost type with a kind, wisened nature? Want to rekindle your inner child and rediscover the joy in life through your practice? Fairy types tend to be good with that! Do you just want a friend who will be loyal and stick by your side as you travel the astral realms to be the very best spiritual self you can? Well, the choice is yours. We honestly can’t wait to provide you with this service, but there are a few things to keep in mind when requesting your servitor.
All Gijinkas will begin in their basic evolutionary form and grow with you on your life path. How they evolve and transform as servitors are, at least in part, determined by you as their Keeper. Evolution is “programmed” into their energetic systems to happen at specific points of growth, though evolution that requires specific items or circumstances in canon lore will need to be talked out in consultation regarding your order.
Shinies are an available option! However, since these are more desirable and are considered extremely rare in canon, they cost a little bit extra compared to standard forms. Do you have a “special” design for your Gijinka like Pink Butterfree? Well, this is exactly the function you would use to do it! Simply mention it when filling out your form.
Each Gijinka comes with a set “movepool” limit as well as unique abilities. A Gijinka’s “moves” are simply another term for their skills in magick, while abilities refer to powers which act passively (meaning without their conscious effort) either on a constant basis or in specific scenarios. Their moveset limit is and the total number of abilities are determined by their tier. This move limit may increase by evolution, and can be planned out prior to servitor creation. However, if you want to expand upon this, you can look at the table below to see what you can add for $10 per extra addition. Hidden abilities and special moves are the same cost as moves that can be learned normally in canon. If the pokemon can learn the move in the storyline games, a skill or power based on said move/ability (or the pokemon’s core personality) can be given to your gijinka.
Let’s talk rarity! Everyone wants a Mewtwo on their team, while not quite as many people will be looking for Pidgey. Why? It’s mostly in terms of strength, rarity and canon lore. When making Gijinkas, we have to pour in a lot more energy to accurately portray a Lugia’s strength than, say, a Pikachu. That said, the rarity and status of a particular Pokemon will affect pricing. We have specific tiers for each type, so keep an eye on your options to hash out what you truly want in a servitor.
As you might be aware, Jynx creates a wide array of servitors already, including Eros Servitors. Eros are R rated servitors created with the capacity for learning the art of sex magick, as well as having the ability to keep things exciting in the bedroom. We are pleased to announce that we will be offering similar options regarding the creation of Gijinkas! However, we would like to note that the standard applications for Eros Servitors also apply to Gijinkas.
Concerning Mega Evolutions and Gigantamax/Dynamax Gijinkas: we will be offering these as well! HOWEVER! These will be separate add ons, as these require particular items and an extra expenditure of energy (both for us to build into it and for the Gijinka to be able to sustainably expend while taking these forms).
Fusions are a topic among some enthusiasts that seems to be pretty popular as of late. Concerning Fusions, we will be taking these ideas tentatively as custom creations under the following stipulations:
Until noted otherwise, fusion gijinkas cannot be obtained by “meshing” two Gijinkas together. The fusion must be made as a single entity with a single form.
Fusions will not be able to evolve. This is because they require original designs and a fluid mesh of both influences regarding the pokemon’s form for each new fusion, which may clash as evolution progresses. We may make an exception should the fusion be deemed appropriate, but this is completely at our discretion. That in mind, fusions are the exception to the previous “start as basic evolution” rule.
Fusions will be considered custom listings, and need to be discussed prior to order. Before putting down a request through the shop, please consider contacting us at our email to discuss “blueprinting” your servitor.
This brings us to the subject of the obscure realm of “Fakemon.” While we will create these gijinkas upon request, we do have a few special rules for these as well.
These Fakemon will generally follow the same rules as Fusions, with the exception that evolutions can be made for them. However, we need design concepts and enough “lore” for the Fakemon to work with.
If the designs are not your own, we ask that you come up with your own lore for the design. For example; if a “Witchicat” is a Ghost/Dark Type made by a pokemon fan in the online community, try to create your own story for them to start us off and we can take that and create something unique. Please do remember that, as stated before, we do not claim to own their designs. We simply create servitors in their likeness.
If you want your servitor to stop evolving at a particular point, we have the option to create our own version of the Everstone for your Gijinka to carry or wear at all times. This stone is designed to convert excess energy into extra power behind current abilities/movesets, as well as reinforce and cement their current energetic layout in order to help keep the Gijinka from further transformation. The result is a servitor who’s strength becomes exponentially more powerful than regular unevolved gijinkas over time, which makes up for their lack of final stage in evolution. The sooner an Everstone is applied, your gijinka becomes much stronger far more quickly.
Gijinkas with multiple forms that it’s canon inspired origin can shift between one or the other will only be able to access a single form unless an add-on is purchased that allows the servitor to toggle forms. For example, a Meloetta will only take one form unless specifically requested otherwise. Also, Arceus and Sylvally will have a charge for each type form you wish to add (for example, Dark, Fairy and Bug forms will each need to be unlocked via separate additions)

On The Rise; Outsourcing Trends for the Year 2020
The digital era has come out of its dawn and is steadily working its way towards its brightest peak, remodeling the world in a pace that humanity can barely keep up with. And as 2019 draws to a momentous close, the stage prepares to accommodate the incoming year and its attendant changes.
In anticipation of these events, here is a list of events and trends that would potentially influence and sculpt the landscape of the outsourcing industry in the year 2020.
 The Sino-American Trade War
The Sino-American Trade War, or better known as the Chinese-American Trade War, is the ongoing heated battle between two of the world’s largest and most powerful economies. It infamously originated from current United States President Donald Trump’s imposition of tariffs on imported Chinese goods, which of course led to China's retaliation by imposing its own tariffs on imported US products. After a long exchange of threats and even more tariffs and trade barriers, both camps appear to finally be reaching a less hostile common ground – although perfect amicability still seems off the table for now.
The United States is one of the biggest consumers of outsourced products and services. On the other hand, the People’s Republic of China according to Business Insider is the world’s top outsourcing country with an outsourcing market that grows by 30 percent each year. It’s not such a leap of faith to say that United States probably outsources a lot of its processes to China – but with the existing conflict between the two countries, it’s more than a distinct possibility that US based corporations are likely to look for other popular outsourcing destinations like the Philippines and India to avoid being hit as the economic battle rages on.
 Customer Service Outsourcing
In this digital age, everyone who has an opinion to share have enumerable ways to express themselves. This is a double edged sword for businesses. As the White House Office of Consumer Affairs states, a single dissatisfied customer will likely tell 9-15 people about their disappointing experience – magnified by the power of the social media, this single dissatisfied customer might just prove detrimental to the company’s reputation and revenue.
Even now, brands like Ford Motor Company, Cisco, American Express, JP Morgan Chase and others utilize this power to their own advantage, and are relying on offshore BPO companies to handle their customer relations. With these names fanning the understandable hype of focusing on client satisfaction, we anticipate that there would be a definite rise in the number of businesses who outsource their customer service in the coming year.
 Social Media Management Outsourcing
As of 2019, the social media platform Facebook alone amassed a total of 2.45 billion of monthly active users. This equates to 31.4 percent of the world’s total population, which is estimated to be currently at 7.8 billion. As the number of people who have access to the internet and the many different social media platforms rise, businesses and corporations hasten to establish a formidable social media presence. Small and mid-size enterprises, however, often cannot afford to hire a full-time on-site employee for the sake of social media management alone. For these companies, outsourcing is an alternative that would allow them to reap the full benefits of being on social media without having to break the bank.
Staff Acquisition and Recruitment Process Outsourcing
As outsourcing is predicted to overtake other industries in the very near future, more and more processes are also expected to be widely outsourced. Recruitment Process Outsourcing, or RPO, is no exception. RPO is simply the act of entrusting the hiring process of a company to a third party. The company usually provides their own candidate qualifications, requirements, and a highly specified screening process. For many businesses, but especially for startups and SMEs, outsourcing is a solution that allows them to nitpick their potential employees to their hearts’ content without having to spend too much on unnecessary expenses. This is why we expect to see RPO outsourcing to become more mainstream by next year.
 Healthcare Finance and Administrative Outsourcing
The Center for American Progress projects that by the end of 2019,  U.S. payers and providers would have spent almost $500 billion on healthcare-related billing and administrative costs alone. As inflation hits the economy, and as healthcare regulations turn more rigid, this amount is expected to hike up even further in the near future. To cut back on expenses, many healthcare organizations have turned to outsourcing in the past years. Even more are anticipated to join their ranks -- according to a survey by Healthcare Finance News, up to 98 percent of hospital leaders are deciding whether to offload their day-to-day non-core processes to third party outsourcing providers in the attempt to reduce operational costs.
Due to a number of factors such as geopolitical conflicts, emerging economies, new innovations and rising technologies, the world is constantly on the cusp of change.
Tech giants are continually looking for ways to establish themselves as modern pioneers. Billion-dollar industries are perpetually devising strategies to gain more customers and increase revenues.
Amidst all this, we at Big Outsource believe that there is a middle ground that would allow even SMEs to succeed. We also believe that information is power – which is why we think it’s essential to look at the past months to be able to at least partly anticipate the changes that might occur in the future. Because ultimately, we believe that one of the most vital keys to success is realizing the power of making informed decisions.

Of the latest “controversial” opinions to rock social media, renowned director Martin Scorsese voiced his dislike of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). To Scorsese, MCU films are more like an amusement park than cinema which is meant to “convey emotional, psychological experiences.” As you do, this sparked some outrage among fans and even a few filmmakers from MCU. Scorsese himself even wrote an op-ed for The New York Times to further explain himself when the backlash got out of control and specified he meant the whole comic book film genre.
On one hand, I understand not wanting to give in to an elitist ideal of what “cinema” is, and comic book films deserve to be on equal footing as any other genre. Not every film needs to be a grand masterpiece, and art is subjective and can come from anywhere, even in the MCU. Black Panther is an expertly crafted film of Afrofuturism and deserved all its awards nominations. Guardians of the Galaxy, despite being an inherently goofy franchise, delivers a strong, emotional, complex narrative of found family and overcoming trauma from a lifetime of abuse. MCU also gave a ton of publicity for more unknown actors and directors. And audiences steadily flocked to the rest of their work, and they look forward to what else they have to give besides superhero films; it’s one of the reasons why Taika Waititi is now a favorite director in my book. And give credit where it’s due, Marvel is the only successful cinematic universe so far to stay in the long run where others spectacularly failed. It’s not perfect, but all things considered on what could’ve gone wrong, it’s surprising to see the hard work pay off.
At the same time, despite being a longtime fan of MCU, I’m starting to feel fatigued with the superhero genre. And this began way before Scorsese said anything. With the release of Disney+, fans are expected to subscribe and watch these new shows which apparently will tie into future movies scheduled out until 2022. It’s also not much of a secret that Disney is morphing into a corporate monster and consuming all media it can grabs its hands on. And with more time to further reflect on some of these movies without the excess hype, I admit I was probably far too kind on my initial reviews. There are a lot of MCU films I can discuss in these regards, but as I drafted this up, I had far more to say on Spider-Man. So that will be my primary focus for this piece.
At the end of the day, Scorsese’s opinions are mainly on his personal film tastes— also, c’mon, the guy agreed to voice act in fucking Shark Tale of all things; no one’s twisting your arm to take his word as gospel—, and not everyone is gonna automatically like the superhero genre. I respect that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, and I agree it feels like the film market is oversaturated with them. And there is still a lot to be said on recent filmmaking trends and if MCU can keep a steady momentum in the long run. It is possible to have too much of a good thing. After a while, you’ll want to leave the amusement park, but when will that point be? Well, I’m here to break down my biggest frustrations with MCU through Scorsese’s lens and a reevaluation of Spider-Man, both the character and the movie franchise.
I. Too Many Damn Franchises
In his op-ed, Scorsese worried about “franchise films [which] are now your primary choice” in major theaters, leaving little room for everyone else.  It isn’t much of a stretch that we don’t see a lot of original content which stands on its own between all the sequels and reboots which expect prior knowledge of its predecessors to understand what is going on. And of course, Disney is the largest perpetrator of this with all the properties they own and all the live action remakes/reimaginings of their original content which no one asked for (no, trust me, you didn’t ask for an origin story of Cruella de Vil; turn off the nostalgia goggles).
Yeah, there’s only like, one of these I want to see
Some of MCU’s individual franchises, particularly the earlier films, work well on their own without necessarily needing to watch every other film in the universe. Some are only connected with super minor details which can be picked up from context clues or dialogue referencing events of the previous films. Guardians of the Galaxy is the best example of this as their adventures are self-contained up until Avengers: Infinity War. But then you have Tom Holland’s Spider-Man which completely relies on fully understanding what’s happening in the universe as whole; what happens to him in Captain America: Civil War and the last two Avengers movies influences the plots of Spider-Man: Homecoming and Far from Home. It’s impossible for this iteration of Spider-Man to stand on its own without MCU context. And they can only spend so much time to recap the previous movies because they assume you already watched them; the recaps are just bare bones refreshers. Each new MCU film is further tied into the entire franchise, so now you have to watch a decade’s worth of movies to understand the individual franchises.
MCU is also one of many franchises dominating movie theaters, averaging at about 2-3 releases per year. It may not sound like a lot, but it’s overwhelming when they’re sandwiched between other franchises from D.C. Comics to Harry Potter to Star Wars and whatever 80s or 90s properties Hollywood finds worthy of a reboot/sequel. Movies are still pretty expensive, and we can’t be expected to see every movie as they release. So we end up having to pick and choose what to immediately see in theaters. And if you’re seeing a franchise film, chances are you’ll also have to backtrack on whatever predecessors are available to get the context of a new movie. When other movies, especially non-franchise films, don’t perform as well upon opening weekend, their showings are reduced, and you’ll be lucky if they’re still there a month later. And this is part of why directors like Scorsese turn to streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime to release their movies to not panic on box office numbers, “the primary delivery system” as he calls it.
While streaming services are convenient and far less expensive than movie tickets, viewers are still subject to content overload. With fluctuating availability of certain titles, you still have to pick and choose what you want to see first before it disappears for months or years. Do you want to watch this new Netflix original film that’s gonna be there forever, or do you want to watch re-runs of The Office before its contract expires? Sometimes if a service doesn’t see an immediate high viewership of certain original shows, they get cancelled and fade into obscurity. Now everyone and their mother wants to hop on the streaming bandwagon, and spread out their exclusive shows as thinly as possible, including Disney. The overall costs come close to cable or satellite television which goes against the whole point of streaming services.
Expanding the MCU to television isn’t a new concept. We still have Daredevil and Jessica Jones on Netflix, just to name a couple shows. Although they referenced the MCU films, their worlds were separated far enough that you could watch the shows without needing to see any movies. But then you also have something like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D which is more dependent on seeing the movies to understand the show’s plot. If you didn’t see the latest MCU movie that weekend before the next episode, you’ll probably miss out on the context and be barraged with spoilers. Although the events of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D weren’t referenced in the MCU films, the fans still have a lot of work to keep up with the show’s story.
Also, I know y’all are worried about brand integrity, but you already own Hulu…??
Not only were all the Netflix shows cancelled in favor of Disney+, but the shows on the new platform are said to affect future films, including all the new characters to be introduced. We still don’t know to what extent the shows and films will tie in together, but it already sounds demanding to keep up with. And let’s be real, who asked for WandaVision, a show with two of the most boring MCU characters? Or Hawkeye after Jeremy Renner decided to make a raging asshole of himself? Do I really need to watch these shows to understand the movies going forward?
Again, it’s still too early to determine how much the shows will coincide with the movies. And given the success of a show like The Mandalorian, I hope I’m wrong on the quality of future Disney+ projects. But I can’t help notice that MCU started favoring quantity over quality since they know they can make bank regardless of the project. It aaaaalllllll comes back to money which brings me to the next big issue of MCU.
II. Business Over Art
Business and art is always at odds with each other in filmmaking, especially if you’re going into Hollywood, and it’s never easy to compromise on the two. You need to find a balance between getting a finished movie out to theaters and not wasting the production’s time and money. According to Scorsese, this used to be “a productive tension that gave us some of the greatest films ever made.” However, in recent years, this balance tipped in business’s favor “with absolute indifference to the very question of art.” As a result, we don’t get the full “unifying vision of an individual artist.” We just have “worldwide audiovisual entertainment” and cinema. “They still overlap from time to time, but that’s becoming increasingly rare. And [he] fear[s] that the financial dominance of one is being used to marginalize and even belittle the existence of the other.”
Okay, this is still fun no matter how many times I see it
Sadly, we see this financial dominance with Disney grabbing on as many properties as possible and launching their own streaming service with exclusive shows and films. This became most heated with the Spider-Man character rights debacle with Sony. Back in August 2019, Sony disagreed on Disney’s proposed 50-50 split of MCU Spider-Man movie profits. If a deal wasn’t made, Disney would lose the rights to Spider-Man, and the MCU wouldn’t get a third film for the character. And it took a month for the companies to reach a deal to keep Spider-Man in the MCU with the third film scheduled for July 2021, but the details of the new deal weren’t publicly disclosed. Fans were divided as to which company was in the right, and it’s a little bit of Column A and B.
On one hand, it’s annoying when studio executives get in the way of the art and think they know what will guarantee box office and critical success. And it’s especially irritating in this case when character rights bounce around and determine who will make the next movies and what stories to tell. Spider-Man already has not one, but two previous franchises cancelled before their full potentials were realized. Yeah, Sony kinda shot themselves in the foot with the crap quality of Spider–Man 3 and The Amazing Spider–Man 2, but I can’t help wonder how these stories could’ve gone if they were allowed to continue.
Still the superior Spider-Man movie, by the by
On the other hand, Sony was right to refuse Disney’s initial offer. You think after the tremendous success they had with Into the Spiderverse that they would settle on only half of the profits? Disney has more than enough monopoly on Hollywood that they’re nowhere near in danger of bankruptcy like they used to be. We still need studios which will put their foot down to greedy demands and will better unleash creativity in ways which even Disney is still too chicken to pursue. I’m still so glad we waited on Sony to make Miles Morales the star of his own movie, because MCU has a bad track record of keeping up with diverse representation that only within the past 2 years of a 12-year-old franchise did we finally get movies not led by cisgender white men. And there was a lot more genuine love to do this story and these characters right to show anyone can be a hero.
Between the tug-of-war on character rights and franchise overload, these business decisions greatly affect the movies, and some of these stories may not live up to their full potential (not to mention the actors’ contracts which dictate how much screentime their characters get). As this is Disney we’re talking about, we also run into my final major issue with their control on MCU.
III. Cultural Authority on Stories
I knew saving my books from the UC: Santa Cruz Walt Disney class would come in handy some day!
In her essay “Fantasia: Cultural Constructions of Disney’s ‘Masterpiece'”, media historian Moya Luckett discusses the concerns of Disney holding “cultural authority” on the images of famous stories. As Disney is a formidable part of most everyone’s childhood, they are usually the go-to images when we think of Cinderella, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, and dozens more. Disney is clearly doing something right if these films are enjoyed decades later. I still go to Disney when I first think of Robin Hood, and it’s just as great as when I watched it as a kid. Unfortunately, with Disney dominating family and children’s media, they don’t allow much room for other interpretations to shine.
For example, with Luckett’s focus on the 1940 film, Fantasia, music critics worried “that the power of Disney’s images would anchor the music,” so some audiences may immediately associate “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” with Mickey Mouse or “Pastoral Symphony” with centaurettes instead making their own interpretations¹. And those critics were definitely right to worry, and the concerns expanded beyond classical music. To this day, folks still react with shock when they read the original books or darker iterations of fairytales which these movies are based on. In some extreme cases, Disney’s images contribute to racial stereotypes and distorted perceptions of histories and cultures, and the company still hasn’t figured out how to properly express that while they were products of their time, they weren’t okay then and they’re certainly not okay now.
But anyway, what the fuck does this all have to do with MCU? Sadly, Disney’s cultural authority leaked into MCU too.
With an indefinite future and the inevitable MCU reboots of characters and groups like the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, it is probably going to be literal years before we see new versions of characters like Tony Stark or Steve Rogers, at least as far as live-action movies are concerned. We’ll always have the numerous cartoons and, of course, the original comics, but the live-action films are stuck until Disney reboots these franchises themselves, or they pass the rights along to another studio to do so. For some viewers, MCU may be the first go-to images of these heroes, and not every fan will be dedicated enough to seek out other adaptations on their own. And that’s not a good thing if a comic arc or character gets a shitty adaptation. One such example, which also ties into Spider-Man, is the Civil War storyline which was adapted to film with Captain America: Civil War in 2016.
The original comic, published from July 2006 to January 2007, was a mega Marvel crossover event in which after a superheroes and villains battle ended in over 600 civilian deaths, the U.S government quickly passed the Superhuman Registration Act. Any superpowered person— regardless how they obtained their abilities— was required to register with the government, publicly reveal their identities, and enlist with S.H.I.E.L.D. for training to serve as a hero. Many heroes split up into two factions: one led by Tony Stark, who helped pass the law, and Steve Rogers, who went rogue to create the Secret Avengers because he found the law violated civil liberties of freedom and privacy. Families and friendships were torn apart, and the fighting escalated so badly that it was no longer even about the law but about Tony and Steve’s massive egos on who was right, resulting in more damage than any villain could’ve done (I recommend watching Comicstorian’s overview of the story for more details since it there’s so much going on, and his video is nice and succinct).
MCU already put themselves in pickle trying to adapt one of the biggest comic stories ever as they couldn’t portray the same scale of conflict, emotional zeitgeist, or the multiple sideplots weaved in. Film is already an inherently limited medium of entertainment for time, so cuts are inevitable. And what do you do when you can’t bring in major players like the Fantastic Four or the X-men? Well, for Captain America: Civil War, the conflict was scaled down to the Sokovia Accords which gave control of Avengers activity to the United Nations since their more recent missions often did more damage than good. In theory, this isn’t necessarily a bad idea since it still ties into the themes of government control versus civil liberties and when heroes need to be accountable. And the two sides still align similarly to the original comic with Tony Stark in favor of the law after his screw-up with Ultron and Steve Rogers against it after S.H.E.I.L.D. turned out to be front for HYDRA just a couple years before.
Unfortunately, the conflict over the Sokovia Accords is too quickly sidelined over Bucky Barnes being framed for a terrorist attack and a severe misunderstanding of his brainwashing when he was the Winter Soldier. The characters’ motivations— most of which have nothing to do with the Accords at all— jump all over the place on why they side with Tony or Steve. The ultimate battle boils down to a bromance love triangle, and I don’t feel like the MCU Avengers are a cohesive enough unit to feel any emotional drama when they split apart. In the long run, the worst consequences that anyone faces for violating the Sokovia Accords are either going into hiding or being placed under house arrest. And the law really stops mattering to anyone once Thanos snaps half of the universe’s population out of existence, making most of the film inconsequential. And for all of MCU’s best efforts to cut and edit the story to fit to film language, it’s still underwhelming to not have the massive scale the comic had. I don’t know if Civil War could ever have a proper live-action film adaptation without splitting it into multiple parts, and let’s be honest, audiences only have so much attention spans before they want something new.

One of the major sideplots of Civil War was, of course, Spider-Man’s involvement, which became a huge selling point in the film’s trailers. In the comic, Peter Parker was ambivalent towards the Superhuman Registration Act, because villains could use the heroes’ public identities to attack their friends and family. But he still had faith that Tony Stark had everything under control, and revealed his identity in a press event to publicly voice his support for the Act. However, after a fight against the Secret Avengers resulted in the gruesome death of Goliath, Peter questioned Tony’s motivations and switched over to Steve Rogers’s side in hopes to de-escalate the fighting so no more heroes would die. At this point, Tony and Peter were well-acquainted that the former supplied him with his own tech, particularly the Iron Spider suit, so the side-switching (including a one-on-one fight between the two) was a hell of a surprise for readers. And I was really looking forward to that dynamic to play out in MCU, especially with a younger version of Peter Parker.
“So, cool if I just dip out for like 3 months without explanation?”
But MCU decided to throw out that conflict in favor of Peter Parker giving unquestioning veneration to Tony Stark as his mentor when he honestly doesn’t deserve it– I covered some of this briefly in a previous post on Tony Stark’s character stagnation, so there is some repeat but also some update with Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home in mind. Anyway, let’s break down Tony’s wonderful career as a mentor: manipulating Peter to join a fight against Captain America without the full details when it was already a huge misunderstanding; putting him on radio silence when black market weapons dealers were ready to steal his tech and just said he had it under control (spoiler: he didn’t, and Peter had to save the day himself and was nearly crushed by a whole building in the process); and trusting him with a pair of hi-tech glasses without instructions on how to not accidentally set off drones against his classmates.
This scene from Homecoming will always annoy the piss out of me. You can’t change my mind.
There’s a lot of confused framing and intentions to unpack here. Tony clearly doesn’t have certain situations under control, constantly struggles to come to terms with the fact he can’t save everyone, and lets anxiety overwhelm his better judgement in his deluded ideas to protect people. Despite his paranoia of saving everyone, Tony somehow doesn’t seem the least bit concerned with all the dangerous situations Peter, a 16-year-old, throws himself into while he’s on vacation. And Tony is still framed in the right on how he handles his problems, including punishing Peter for questioning his poor communication skills. Yeah, bold flex from a guy who waited until the last second to help save a boat full of civilians. Yes, we have to go through “with great power comes great responsibility” in a Spider-Man story, but Tony was well-aware how eager Peter was to prove himself, especially when he’s much more inexperienced and at a much younger age where he seeks validation from adult role models. Aside from giving Peter some nice tech, Tony didn’t actually teach him anything about heroism, and he certainly didn’t care to get to know him personally when he’s out of the suit which severely undermines the mentor-student route they attempted with these two characters. Tony gave Peter a lot of power, but didn’t guide him how to responsibly use it.
Sweet moment; you gonna apologize for the part where you sat off to the side while he was almost crushed by a building?
I wanted to see that conflict between Peter and Tony like in the comics. It would’ve been fascinating to see the perspective of a teenager roped into the adult world of heroes. Perhaps he’d look back on his involvement in Civil War and wonder why the hell he was a part of that and what being a hero means to him. I didn’t want Peter to be punished for rightfully questioning Tony’s methods, and maybe, just once, Tony would get a come-to-Jesus moment and stop being a perpetual douchebag. The closest we get to those moments of actual love and mutual respect are the last two Avengers movies when Peter is snapped out of existence and Tony sacrifices himself to stop Thanos. The payoff is in the right mind, but MCU forgot the proper build-up to establish any genuine connection between Peter and Tony, let alone hold the latter accountable for his constant fuck-ups and neglectful mentoring. The lost potential in that bond and the Civil War arc only scratches at the surface in regards to why this adaptation of Spider-Man falls short.
Another gripe diehard MCU fans had on the character rights debacle was if Sony got back Spider-Man, how would they do the next movie without referencing Tony Stark? And this ties back again to the fact MCU Spider-Man cannot work as a standalone franchise. Peter Parker’s growth revolves too much on other MCU events and characters, especially Tony, and you don’t know who he is without those outside influences. Even the villains’ motivations are framed around Tony doing them wrong in some way. Yes, most viewers are familiar enough with Spider-Man that it’s redundant to show the origin story again; we know Uncle Ben is gonna die no matter what. But personal tragedy and family love were always Peter’s primary motivations to becoming a hero, and MCU barely references them. They can’t even get the dynamic between Peter and Aunt May right; their love is so lifeless and dull.
Iron Man Jr? Spider-Man? I don’t know anymore…
What makes Peter’s arc fascinating to watch isn’t him proving himself to Tony or some other surrogate father figure. It’s his relationship with what little family he has left, sacrificing his emotional needs to protect them, using his resourcefulness to build himself up as a hero, looking out for the underrepresented of New York City so they don’t have to go through what he did, and accepting that he can’t save everyone, even with all his best efforts. MCU shows snippets of that arc, but the development is still too focused on Tony to the point where Spider-Man feels more like an Iron Man Jr. It works well enough for the overall MCU, but not so much as an individual franchise when you compare the story and character relationships to the films made by Sam Raimi, Marc Webb or even Phil Lord and Rodney Rothman. Thank God that Spider-Man has so many adaptations for people to flock to, because if this was someone’s first and only introduction of the character in live-action film, they’d be hopelessly confused.
Sadly, that ends up being the case for so many MCU characters whose stories are also stuck with too much outside influences instead of being allowed to develop on their own. If I tried to cover every character potential wasted in MCU so far, we’d be here forever. As of late, MCU focuses on tying every event and character arc together and overloading on Easter eggs to build up to the next major plot conversion instead of creating stories with organic world-building which can stand on their own. This isn’t the case for every MCU movie, but it is the most common trend in their latest projects which will most likely continue to that next crossover event, whenever and whatever it is. The allusions to other films in the universe should be embellishments, not the entire story’s foundation.
Although I’m curious where they’ll take Peter Parker given the midcredits scene of Far From Home, I also wonder if they’ll tell his story with him front-and-center and without referencing Tony Stark every five minutes. But what’s done is done, and MCU’s Spider-Man relied too much on those allusions to the point where some fans forgot what made him a great hero to begin with. When you strip away his involvement with the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D., his arc is feeble compared to other adaptations. Sure, Tobey Maguire got goofy at times, and Andrew Garfiled’s drama was maybe too heavy-handed, but their Peter Parkers are at least well-rounded characters who figure out what being a hero means to their personal growth. Tom Holland does well with what he’s given, and I love seeing his emotional vulnerability, but I don’t know who his Peter Parker is without Avengers shenanigans.
I want to continue enjoying MCU as much as anyone else, but it’s hard to not see Scorsese’s point that most of these movies are mindless like amusement parks. At some point, we gotta turn off the hype goggles and see what else these stories have to offer besides how they relate to larger events in the cinematic universe. It’s not bad to indulge in mindless fun every now and then, and we still get fantastic movies out of MCU, but audiences will get tired of the obligation to watch dozens of shows and movies to keep up with the story. And with Disney controlling almost all of entertainment, we need to re-evaluate if they’re interested in telling engaging stories or in shooting out franchise after franchise to maintain steady profits and if these are even good-enough adaptations of such beloved comic characters we want to automatically go to when we think of them. As I said before, it is possible to have too much of a good thing, and you need to leave the amusement park eventually. Since we know so little of their next crossover events, I hope MCU finds the point where they can satisfyingly wrap up the story of this universe before we get exhausted by it all.

Hello! I’ve been reading some of your posts and they’ve got me hooked. You seem to have the answer to all my questions but I need tips on characterisation? What is the best way to develop my characters? I want to flesh them out but I’m finding it’s hindering my writing
Hi there! Oh jeez thank you! and thank you for thinking me worthy of giving that advice. I’ll try my best! I work best by giving examples, so I’ll probably give examples a lot using one of my own characters.
I’m sure you’ve already got the basics down. Their name, their general vibe, maybe a hobby or two, a few personality traits. That’s how I start, with the basics, and then I let it spread. I know a lot of people don’t care to think of the little things that won’t be at all relevant to plot but I think, if you’re struggling to flesh out a character with only plot-relevant details and those character check lists aren’t helping, then it’s okay to really push way past that relevance and start picturing them day-to-day, even walking alongside you as you go about your tasks.
(Inevitable long post, so here’s a cut)
How do they behave in the grocery store you just walked into? Where do they go first? What are they looking for? Do they have a plan or are they winging it? How do they behave towards the person who just bumped your cart? How do they greet the cashier? Sure, a medieval fantasy character isn’t going to know what the hell a grocery store is, nor will they ever encounter one in the plot, but you’ll learn a bit about them if you imagine they go straight for the candy aisle, or if they yell at the person who hit you, or if they talk to the cashier and ask how their day is going.
If I were to walk through the grocery store “with” my characters June and Phoenix-
We’d enter, and Phoenix would gun ahead and grab several containers of berries. Sure it tells me he likes berries, but it also tells me he thinks ahead, he already knew what he wanted before we walked in the door, and I know he intends to make pies and jams out of them. Though that is a tiny bit plot relevant for me, even if it weren’t, it’d tell me he’s a creator and he likes to share and he doesn’t mind taking his time on things. June, on the other hand would linger back, check every price and only purchase things on sale, most of them ready-made or low-prep. It tells me she’s careful with her money and may be overwhelmed by too many choices or the idea of spending cash, likely due to growing up in poverty, and that she doesn’t enjoy spending time on creating (at least, not in the kitchen).
I think, if you go about your day like that, imagining them with you and thinking “knowing what I already know about them, what would they do? What do these extra things tell me that I didn’t know before, or I knew but didn’t quite realize?” you’re going to find them turning into People instead of just Characters. Sometimes you might not know right away, or sometimes you’ll get an answer you weren’t expecting. Sometimes you just have to throw an answer at them and make them take it. Hey June, what’s your favourite fruit? You don’t know? Green apple! Why? You don’t know? Because they’re sour and crisp and you like that, and your dad used to bring you a green apple on your birthday and it makes you think of that one time you went to the orchard as a kid. And now, suddenly, green apples are her favourite and they make her happy and now I know she’ll enjoy most things that taste crisp and tart and they make her think of her dad who she loves and misses dearly.
Another thing I like to do is playlists. Not a playlist that’s full of lyrics that I think reflect the character, but what they would listen to. What does it tell me about them? When do I picture them listening to it? Maybe it tells me they like dancing, or maybe it tells me they like the feeling of drums in their chest and the sensation of power, or maybe the lyrics tell me they’ve got a bit of simmering anger underneath.
What about their nighttime routine? Do they even have one? Do they sleep where they drop - comfortable anywhere and a little unorganized- , or do they need their own bed and blankets and the bathroom routine they do every night and they need to fall asleep to the sounds of the street outside that they’re used to - maybe anxious, afraid of change, maybe they wake up several times during the night which could mean they’re regularly sleep deprived leading to a caffeine reliance or short temper or something as simple as a constant case of dark circles under their eyes.
What about their morning?
Every morning my character Gabriel gets up, goes for a run quick run, takes a shower, spends 20-30 minutes in the mirror, has a breakfast high in protein and healthy fats, reads the news paper, gets into his suit (Indochino for an office day, Brioni or Burberry or Saint Laurent for a court date or a meeting), gets in his car (Aston Martin, his pride and joy), turns on music (bass-heavy, hypes him up and makes him feel powerful), and goes to work (defense attorney).
Something as simple as his morning routine tells me he’s a little vain, focused on his health, likes to be informed, is very comfortable financially, is superficial with his buying into high-price brands, is terribly organized with his time, and probably has to be pretty damn smart to be a lawyer.
Another way to get to know them outside of plot-relevance is write drabbles. Write fluffy scenes with them at a campfire with their friends, write scenes where something bad has happened and they’re hurting and nobody’s around to help, write scenes where they’re put in an uncomfortable situation, figure them out in ways that every-day people figure themselves out.
Also be sure to look at things that may have made them a part of a marginalized community, this could sway their personality or their view of the world or the way they treat others or even themselves. Ex. a person who grew up poor vs a person who grew up spoiled rotten and wanting for nothing. They may both be generous, but their generosity might look different.
And then, of course, there’s always the little check-boxes. What scares them superficially (spiders), what scares them deep down (being forgotten by everyone they love)? What makes them angry, and how do they act on it? What fuels them with so much rage they’d throw a punch in the middle of a dinner party? Would they ever throw a punch? Do they have trauma? What makes them embarrassed? What makes them insecure? What do they see as an irreparable betrayal of trust? How do they feel about death? Do they feel differently about their own death vs. the death of loved ones vs. the death of enemies? How do they handle loss? How do they handle substantial gain? How would they handle a hit to their health? How do they cope with sadness or tragedy? What brings them peace? What brings them insurmountable joy? Are they a cat or dog person - why? How do they view violence? How do they view compassion? Do they plan long term or assume every day might be their last and forget to plan five minutes ahead? Do they like being on their own or with a group? Do they like strangers? Do they respect authority - if yes, what does the authority they respect look like? Are they patient? Does their patience have limits or areas that it doesn’t extend to? Are they generous? Is their generosity limited to their time, but not their money, or vice versa? What are they guilty of? What’s something they would keep secret even from their best friend? What’s their vice? What positive personality trait becomes a negative one when pushed too far? Do they believe in the goodness of man, or do they believe there is no goodness left, or do they believe there is the potential but goodness is a choice? What about sex? Love? Forever love or is love temporary? Friendships? Work ethic? What’s their view of family - blood related only or can it be created? How’s their time management? What’s a weird skill? How do they view the arts? How do they view hobbies - something beautiful to be embraced and celebrated or a waste of time and money? What do they think is beautiful? What makes them cry - from hurt or from joy? Are they impulsive? Are they confident - in their looks or their intelligence or their personality? Do they like being touched and touching people - are strangers different from friends? Do they speak with full words, contractions, fancy synonyms - do they do it on purpose to give off a certain image or is it how they were raised? What image to they hope to give? What do they hope people think of them?
If you want deep and full characters, their personalities can’t be limited to the plot. They need to be whole entire people and even if 80% of these facts you know about them don’t make it on the page, they’ll influence the details that do make it on the page and make their personality so much richer.

Car Bomb - Mordial
Tumblr media
Car Bomb have followed a curiously backwards trajectory compared to most bands in terms of their releases. They debuted on Relapse Records and then switched to releasing albums independently, and unlike most bands as time goes on, the gaps between albums has shrunk for Car Bomb as their career progresses. This isn’t really all too important, but I thought it was some fun and interesting trivia. Anyway, onto the more relevant stuff.
While fans of the band were of course excited for this new album by Car Bomb here, I haven’t really seen a whole lot of chatter about it (at least from where I’m sitting). For me though, Mordial is undoubtedly one of the albums I was most eager to hear this year. I first heard of Car Bomb through Gojira frontman Joseph Duplantier’s cosigning of and collaboration with them on their 2012 record w^w^^w^w, and I took a liking to them for their wild, volatile brand of mathcore that exploded out in all directions while still feeling purposeful rather than simply haphazard. Their debut album, Centralia, occasionally indulged in some absolutely manic displays of mathcore, but it also showcased a potential for composional greatness that their sophomore release, w^w^^w^w, would expand on. The album’s production was surprisingly a step down from their debut’s, but the band clearly improved their sense of groove and rhythm, and the integration of more industrial elements into their sound was a welcome and well-worked augmentation. But it was their third album, Meta, that came out in 2016, that really blew me away.
It doesn’t come up too often, but when it does, I can’t help but feel I have to give repeated disclaimers. I fucking love Meshuggah, and for as many bands that have incorporated djent into their sound because of them, for as many bands that try to rip off “Bleed” or mimic Meshuggah’s style of groove, no one does it like them. I’ve heard so many different “similar to: Meshuggah” songs and albums in my time as an undeniable die-hard fan of the band, but no one seems to capture that consistently sinister X factor that makes Meshuggah Meshuggah. But with their deeper integration of 8-string groove into their sound and Michael Dafferner’s impressively energetic, committed, Jens-Kidman-esque vocal delivery, Meta was the closest I had ever heard anyone sound to Meshuggah. They had shown their similar (and quite possibly Meshuggah-influenced) sense of groove on w^w^^w^w, but Meta was an even more thorough evolution of that aspect of their sound, and it was so astonishing to hear a band not only capturing a significant amount of that Meshuggah X factor, but also integrating it seamlessly into a sound still all their own rather than merely cheaply imitating.
With that said, I think it’s pretty clear why I was so hyped for the follow-up to Meta. I figured I probably had to bring myself back down to Earth to recognize that Mordial would likely be different in some significant ways and to not be disappointed at the band’s likely refusal to simply metamorphosize into Meshuggah 2.0. And Mordial is indeed different, but just because Car Bomb don’t sound as close to my favorite band on this album doesn’t mean the newer thing they’re trying here are without value, not at all. Car Bomb definitely branch out on Mordial and continue to push themselves in ways not even Meta did.
One major differentiation between Mordial and Meta is the level of (and the type of) vocal melody incorporated on the two albums. While the melody introduced on Meta largely plays into the jolting abrasive robotic aesthetic of their performances, the smoother melodies on Mordial feel unusually spiritually ethereal for Car Bomb, tapping into something similar to what Joseph Duplantier tapped into on Magma (my suspicions of which upon my initial listens to Mordial were confirmed when I read that the Gojira frontman was credited as a creative consultant on the album).
The greater proportion of clean vocals among all the industrially tinged mathcore insanity also gives me some noticeable Fear Factory vibes, and I am totally fine with that. (See "Vague Skies", whose bridge guitar work is surprisingly inspiring amid the rest of the song's instrumental madness). Meanwhile, the song "Antipatterns" in particular gives off somewhat of a Strapping Young Lad/Devin Townsend air as well, while the super crunchy riffage of "Naked Fuse" reminds me of my favorite Textures album, Polars, as well, all of these being very pleasant stylisic similarities and reminders.
The industrial elements on Mordial are also taken to new extremes, like the futuristic laser machine gun sounds on the blasting "Dissect Yourself", which might just be some creative effects pedal magic, and the seemingly dubstep-tinged guitar effects on the tasty groove of "Scattered Sprites".
Songs like "Fade Out" and "Xoxoy" dip into this gorgeous type of atmosphere built by soaring vocal leads and emotive melodic guitar soloing that feed surprisingly well into all the crushing mathcore guitar groove surrounding it.
Mordial indeed comes with plenty of novelty, but it's not such a radical stylistic shift that it's unrecognizable from Meta; there are still the vicious and frantic explosions of angular guitar work and bursts of double-bass battery that Meta was built on; songs like the vibrantly and dynamically groovy "HeLa" and "Blackened Battery" sound like they'd fit right at home on Meta as much as they do here, which I certainly think is a good thing. The title track's spoken delivery of the intro reminds me of one of my favorite Meshuggah songs, "Spasm", and the soloing on the track even sounds Thordendal-esque. Indeed, what was built on Meta is not lost or even replaced on Mordial, but rather it is enhanced and made even more dynamic through its meshing with newer musical elements and compositional styles. And the production on Mordial is as crisp and complimentary as it was on Meta to reinforce the strength of the band's grooves by highlighting the delicious guitar tone's low end and the punchiness of the percussion.
Car Bomb continue to improve and craft their sound and ensure that they represent themselves as completely and positively as possible on Mordial in both their foundations and their recent developments. With a new Meshuggah album due (by pattern) to be released some time next year, I've been thinking of where they could possibly go next to evolve their sound, and I keep thinking of what they might sound like with a bit of industrial edge added to their signature original form of djent. And with a lot of this album Car Bomb have shown what a dashing combination that can be. While the quality of Mordial comes as no surprise, I honestly didn't think Car Bomb could match themselves after Meta, but I think with Mordial they have at least done that by continuing to expand on their sound without sacrificing the positive aspects of their evolution along the way. And the last time I was so pleasantly surprised when I thought a band couldn't outdo their already magnificent preceding work was last year with my #1 album of the year, Khemmis' 10/10 (for those of you who like scores) Desolation, which astonishingly outdid Hunted. And I would say Meta was even better than Hunted, so that could mean something big for Mordial. And their release pattern (though not carved in stone) suggesting that they could put out an even better album in 2021 and then an even better one than that one in 2022 is frightening. Bring it on, I say.

Nostalgia Revisited: How vintage became relevant in fashion today.
There’s a special feeling that arises when you come across something that you don’t see very often. Your heart starts to race as you pull the piece from the rack and see the history of the garment. The way it’s torn at some places, or it its faded wash, or even a graphic that was once popular.
That’s what vintage shopping should be about. It’s finding a piece from a time period in the past and adding your own sense of personal style to it.
What exactly does vintage mean? Does buying something a couple of weeks ago make it vintage?
Nowadays, the term “vintage” can be seen as garments that were once popular in the past making its resurgence in the scope of fashion and its cyclical trend today.
Mia Besorio, editor of Acclaim Magazine says any form of fashion today will be considered vintage in the future.
“All innovations of style will inevitably become vintage, and the construct will always be relevant because fashion is cyclical.” Besorio said.
The idea of fashion having a circular arc has always been thrown around in the scope of trends today.
But with the recent emphasis on fashion especially when it comes to streetwear being the detrimental factor in pushing trends today, how are heritage brands becoming more relevant in fashion today?
Fashion has never become relevant than what it is today; and it’s due to the astronomical ascend of streetwear and its consumers driving the demand for designers to come up with new garments that will generate revenue yearly.
The deconstruction of a heritage brand such as Champion and merging it with the jarring taste of a high-end designer brand like Vetements have made the rise of vintage relevant in today’s market.
Tumblr media

It’s the way streetwear craves this new phase of trends that have continued this wave for heritage brands making its way back in relevancy.
Jai Spence, co-owner of Vintage Marketplace, attributes the wave of streetwear as a major source when it comes to brands having a place in today’s market.
“I think lots of brands have tried so hard to stay away from streetwear but now realise to stay up with the trends they have no choice. “He said.
The collaborations of two seemingly different worlds in fashion today has broken down the assumption that high end was once seen as inaccessible and only for the upper class.
Besorio mentions the idea of diluting separated classes and having a more cohesive approach when talking about fashion as a market today.
“I like seeing high-end brands collaborating with accessible brands. It removes the classicism that is naturally evident in fashion.
Collaborations are momentary, yet they are effective. It humanizes the pretentious and inaccessible fashion houses and shows that they are for the people.”
A big factor catalysing the growing market for vintage collaborations is through social media, the way different fashion brands have found their pieces being worn by people who have a big influence inevitably rises the growing hype towards vintage collaborations.
Spence notes the importance of social media and celebrities such as A$AP Rocky endorsing these brands as a way to influence the general consumer.
Tumblr media
(photo courtesy of vogue.com, A$AP Rocky x Guess campaign)
“In more recent times through social media the ‘influencers’ are even more relevant to brands.
Hip Hop continues to completely take over the fashion world and with the combination of social media it’s hard to see it slowing down any time soon.”
This idea of celebrity endorsement has proved to be effective. With Champion sales rising 15 percent in the last quarter mentioned by its parent, HanesBrands who said it to SGB Media.
So why are consumers reaching out for this new wave of vintage?
The strength of vintage greatly relies on its ability to be nostalgic.
Though the demographic for fashion today is generally around 17-25, those who weren’t born in that time period can look at a piece and look at the rich history while those who were alive in a specific era are hit with nostalgia from their own past.
It’s this constant push and pull between these two consumers that have solidified vintage as a market in its own right.
It’s the safety net of vintage that have made designers realise they can always look back on something and drawn inspiration before moving forward.
Designers such as Raf Simons have referenced vintage in one of his collections, paying homage to Joy Division, a punk band famous in the late ‘70s.
Tumblr media

The world of fashion today is at a crossroad; with brands constantly referencing the past as a way to move forward, vintage brands collaborating with high end designers have effectively stumbled upon something special, celebrating the past by merging it with the future.
This new world of fashion can simply be described as two words; nostalgia revisited.
