For all its flaws, I genuinely think there are few works out there quite like Touhou, which isn’t just a fantasy work but is a work about the meaning of fantasy, and folklore, and how people and societies derive meaning from the mythical and fantastical

Only other obvious example would be Discworld, which I still need to read someday

#touhou #discworld #with the current knowledge I have #I wouldn’t call Touhou a particularly ‘deep’ take on the fantastical #but ZUN puts out some genuinely thoughtful ideas sometimes #Symposium of Post-Mysticism is still his finest exposé on his views #just that he’s both extremely drunk and doesn’t *want* Touhou to be too deep #which is fine #it doesn’t have to be #especially not if he wants to preserve that old doujinshi feel the series’ always had #like a fun safe harbor for people to just enjoy something creative without pressure #which in many respects is the perfect metaphor for what Touhou so often talks about #of Gensokyo being that safe harbor of the weird and the mythical against a modernizing world
