Author Spotlight: Coffeegleek Day 3

How many times do you usually revise your fic/chapter before posting?

At least a few revisions. Then multiple editing passes, and even with my spouse as my proofreader for the past 25+ years, and doing more editing passes before posting to AO3, I still find annoying little typos, sometimes large ones.

If you were to revise one of your older fics from start to finish, which would it be and why?

There was a crack fic I stopped writing years ago. It was a self-challenge during one of those tumblr trope challenges. I was trying to combine all of the tropes into the same fic as they were announced. It got zero traction though so I gave up. I'd love to go back and complete it, make it better. I had the whole thing outlined too.

What do you look for in a beta?

My spouse. We've been together for decades. He's been proofreading my original science fiction work and various fandoms' fanfics since before we were married. He even proofreads my Klaine smut and doesn't blink an eye. (He's a Glee fan too and on tumblr.) He knows what I'm trying to say when I can't find the right words and supplies them. He catches things I don't. What I love the most is for my original work, he's written his own fanfic. It's BAD. It truly is, but it's so heartfelt and earnest. He even came up with a soundtrack should I ever publish my sci-fi novel and the movie or show rights be bought. You really can't get a better beta than that. <3

There’s a number of friends on tumblr that I bounce ideas off of and who give me advice for topics they know far more about than me and google. I try to thank them in my fics.

If you could write the sequel (or prequel) to any fic out there not written by yourself, which would you choose?

I’m going to steal another author’s recent answer and say that I could never do someone else’s work justice. However, I would love to see the author’s ideas for their fics even if they couldn’t write a prequel or sequel.

I suck at remembering titles and author names. There were two political fics that I would love to read more of should their authors ever decide to write in those verses again. One was where Kurt and Blaine's dads were running for president and Kurt and Blaine were along for the ride, staying in the same hotels at time (where they first met,) having to do school remotely, having to be the perfect sons for the press and Blaine being fed up because his parents were conservative Republicans. Then there was another fic where Burt was president and Kurt was the First Son living in the White House, along with Finn, and it was hard to date when your every move is watched by the press.

Do you take liberties with canon or are you very strict about your fic being canon compliant?

I write AU, so canon is only a word often misspelled by me. :) Seriously though, I try to incorporate as many canon elements and characters into my AU fics as I can. It's the kind of AU I like to read as well. What draws me to read and write AUs is taking canon characters, putting them into a different setting, and seeing how they'll react. At their core, they still need to remain the same in principle and have many of the same traits. Like Kurt will always love fashion and be headstrong no matter what. Blaine is always going to have that spark within himself, no matter how depressed or oppressed he gets. Burt and Carole are always going to be loving and nurturing parents at heart. Even in fics where Burt isn't woke, there's a part of him that means well. (Not one of my own fics, but one I read a long time ago.) Different circumstances will change the canon characters and make them react in different ways though. Like, Kurt could end up more withdrawn and hide his love of fashion as a matter of survival and self preservation. He or Blaine could turn into "bad boys." Coach Beiste will always have a heart of gold. Miss Pillsbury will always have a problem with messes. Things like that. I know canon. Give me all the alternate universe versions of it and I will be a happy camper.

Talk about a review that made your day.

I haven't checked for reviews on my fics in ages (because I'm an insecure chicken) so I don't remember any specifically. I do remember there were many that made my day. There are those who take the time to review every chapter. Ones who write only a short note to thank me for writing the fic - both the angsty ones and the cracky fun ones. I love it when someone mentions something that no one else has that I was hoping someone would notice because I was proud of it. I'm not a popular author and don't get a lot of kudos or comments or reblogs compared to many. So each comment and kudos means a lot to me and I'd like to publicly thank every single person who wrote one or hit that kudos button.

Do you ever get rude reviews and how do you deal with them?

I once got a troll who decided it was his job to complain that I had misspelled hors d'oeuvres in one sentence out of an entire verse where the word was written multiple times correctly. It was a series of Klaine Advent one shots for the Empty Nest verse. At first I was shocked and replied with an apology. Then I was, "F this. The person is a troll who didn't read any other part of the fic or verse, just this one quickly written one shot entry, and if all they had to say was that I'd misspelled a commonly misspelled word, then they aren't worth my time." I deleted the comment. There's concrit and trolling. It wasn't concrit.

What advice do you have for people just starting to write?

Have fun writing, even the hard stuff. Know that it's okay to take breaks. Try your best and know you'll get better the more you write and the more you read. Pronouns are your friend and free. Don't put, "I know this is going to suck, so whatever," in your fic description. We all suck at times. It's a part of writing. But if you want folks to read it, using that as your fic's summary isn't the way to go. Just my opinions, which won't even buy you a cup of coffee.

Which fic do you most like to discuss with other people? Why?

I think it’s pretty obvious from all of my rambling that I enjoy talking about both of my series - Empty Nest verse and A Very Hallmark Christmas verse. I'm not a popular author and I know my fics, especially the Empty Nest verse ones, aren’t everyone’s thing, so I never get to really discuss them except with friends that I bug to death in private and via long replies to comments on AO3. (You all are saints blessed by all of the good and patient gods.) I have so much to say about them - the process of writing them, the world building, research, and character decisions that went into every single one. I know they’re not perfect. I know the Empty Nest verse grew miles beyond the ficlette about Burt and Carole that it was meant to be. I know my sense of humor in the Hallmark verse isn’t everyone’s thing either. I still worked really hard on them and am glad that I did. Empty Nest let me release a lot of the fear and anxiety I had for my Hispanic and gay son after the 2016 election. The Hallmark ones were a needed break to put some humor into my life. If others enjoyed them, great. If folks want to know more, my inbox is always open.

What's one aspect of writing fic that gets you really excited?

Writing humor even if I'm the only one that finds it funny. As I said above, writing the Hallmark Christmas movie dialogue and plot and the actors as they were filming it was a blast. Writing the commercials was fun and exciting. In my angsty fics, knowing I wrote a good scene, line, or moment that brought out all the feels. That's more of “satisfaction of a job well done” than excited.

A Very Sloppy Christmas - lucy8675309 posted to tumblr a series of gifs with Kurt dressed up as an elf. It inspired me to write the following prompt, which CoffeeAddict80 encouraged me to write as a fic:

I now want a fic where real Santa’s elf!Kurt gets drunk and vents to Blaine about all the woes of working for Santa. He’s over 100 years old and the outfits are terrible. Why couldn’t they wear clothes like the elves did in that one movie? Drunk elf Kurt has no idea he’s venting to Santa’s son.

Bonus if he wakes up and realizes he just had a drunken one night stand. He isn’t sure who it was with. Only that he’s naked, the guy in the bed beside him is naked and showing off a really great ass. Then said guy turns over and after Kurt’s done staring at his dick, he looks at the guy’s face and realizes who it is.

It’s a Twisted World - I decided to challenge myself by combining the posted 5 weekly Klaine AU Friday themes and adding another one of my own. So that means: Farm, Fairytale, Vintage (1900’s,) Super Powers, Zombie Apocalypse, and Harry Potter World Klaine with a splash of a fic idea I thought of while in the produce section of the grocery store. Each week, the story will continue, though each part stands alone. This is not a brilliant work of perfectly composed fan fiction. What it is, is fast-paced, cracky fun, with a large dose of innuendo. At least it had my son laughing his ass off. I hope y'all enjoy it too. :)

If This Is A Dream 🚢 - @wendibird

Sam receives a tip about a restless spirit haunting a particular patch of woods in South Carolina - one who has asked for him by name. He must now deal with the thought of putting to rest someone he once cared for, but will things go that simply?

Phenomenal opening line/paragraph that puts you in Sam's headspace from the jump, and boy howdy can we all empathize with him, and it's a plausible scenario, one I personally haven't seen tackled til this.

Men of Cold Cases - @smi727

Sam had uncovered hundreds upon hundreds of cases the Men of Letters had never closed, [and the] idea was to investigate what those stodgy old nerds never got around to. Given the cases were at least 60 years old, the chances that any were still active were slim to none. They should all be milk runs…

Fantastic concept, completely original, and well-written to boot. Bonus? The writer has based the plots on actual cold cases and mysteries, and provides you links to the stories behind the story so you can learn more.

Shakespeare gets a run for his money here with a small fic inspired by some of his words. Beautifully composed, from the title to the usage of the lines, flows like a dream, evokes big emotion, and puts you right there in the action, breathtaking from start to finish.

The Runaway Vessel 📌 - @butiaintgonnaloveem

A creepy re-working of a popular children's story that will stay with you after you read it. Killer first line, clutch ending, and a detailed, stunning piece of artwork to boot from @lostmymuseagain, what a match made in heaven. This one dug deep, and definitely read like a cautionary fairytale about fate and choices that grandparents would tell/read to the children on a dark night around the fire, give ‘em a bit of a chill in spite of it.

The document with my little summaries and personalized feedback for each of these got eaten - basically, I had to re-do the list and time’s been scarce, so forgive me for the lateness.

Also, there was a good handful of stories that disappeared due to what I presume was the purge/people deleting or losing their blogs. I did make effort to check AO3 but I’m afraid some stellar work has been lost for good.

There were a lot of repeat writers and folks I’m friendly with in this edition, more than I typically feature - I strive to highlight mostly lesser known writers and, as noted, mostly fics with <100 notes - but they earned it (and I even chucked a few more from some of these peeps into the folder for the next edition, that’s how hard they’re rockin’ it). 28. When I am dead

Oops I made a sad. We are none of us surprised.

Also — huzzah! — I finally wrote something semi-fic length instead of just a drabble. And in honor of Halloween I made it — well, not exactly spooky, but, y’know, paranormal-y. Ish.

ExR, modern AU, major character death tw.

“I’m losing my mind,” Enjolras said, staring blankly at the opposite wall as he sat on his couch.

“You’re not losing your mind,” Grantaire scoffed, hovering slightly awkwardly a few feet behind him.

Hovering rather literally in this case, as his pearlescent feet weren’t quite touching the ground, and when he tried to rest his hands against the back of the couch, they moved through it as if they were made of nothing.

Enjolras barked a short, humorless laugh. “The fact that I can hear you, can see you, would say otherwise,” he said, running a hand across his face. “Even Combeferre thinks I’m crazy.”

He gestured at the door, which Combeferre had just walked through not that long ago after a very unnerving conversation. Grantaire shrugged. “To be fair, Combeferre didn’t say you were crazy,” he offered. “He said he thought you needed sleep. And you do. I know you haven’t been sleeping.”

“I’d say that’s creepy, but since you’re literally haunting me…”

Enjolras trailed off and Grantaire sighed. “I’m not haunting you,” he said quietly.

“You’re dead.”

Grantaire flinched, but Enjolras ignored him. “You died.” Enjolras voice cracked as he said it, and he balled his hands into fists so tightly that his fingernails cut into the palms of his hands. “I watched you die in front of me. And now you’re here, and no one else can see you, or hear you, or—” His voice broke. “So if that’s not haunting me, then what do you call it?”

“I don’t know,” Grantaire said softly. “I don’t have any explanations either.” Enjolras nodded jerkily and stood, and Grantaire half-floated through the couch, worry clear in his expression. “Where are you going?”

“To get some sleep,” Enjolras said numbly. “In hopes that Combeferre was right, and when I wake up—”

Grantaire nodded slowly. “I won’t be here.”

Enjolras paused, a flash of something more heartbreaking than words crossing his face before fading back into his same numb expression. “I want you to be here,” he whispered. “Just not like this.”

He disappeared into his bedroom, Grantaire staring after him, unreadable expression on his translucent face.

Grantaire was still there when he woke up.

Just like he was still there two months later when Enjolras got home from the first Les Amis meeting he’d attended since—

Well.

In awhile.

“What did they say?” Grantaire asked nervously, hovering just inside the doorway as Enjolras shrugged out of his coat. “About me, I mean?”

“They didn’t say anything about you,” Enjolras said shortly, though he paused, one arm still half in its sleeve. “Mainly because I didn’t say anything about you.”

Grantaire stilled. “You didn’t tell them that, uh…”

“That you’re still haunting my apartment?” Enjolras supplied. “No.”

Grantaire nodded slowly, following Enjolras as he made his way into the kitchen, watching as Enjolras pulled a beer out of the fridge. “Why not?” he asked.

Enjolras shrugged as he twisted the cap off the beer bottle and tossed it toward the trash can. “I’m tired of trying to explain it,” he said. “Besides, I’m…” He shrugged again. “I’m not sure it’s anyone else’s business. This is something I think I have to figure out myself.”

But Grantaire, it seemed, had stopped listening, his forehead wrinkling as he watched Enjolras take a swig of beer. “Since when do you drink beer?”

Enjolras glanced at the beer as if he hadn’t even remembered opening it. “It’s leftover from your funeral,” he said. “Or, your wake, I guess. Bahorel insisted on an Irish wake.” He gave Grantaire a small, wan smile. “Said it’s what you would’ve wanted.”

“He was right,” Grantaire said with a weak smile of his own. “And I’m sure I appreciate the thought. But that doesn’t answer my question.”

Enjolras shrugged. “Felt like it might make me more connected to you and that might help me figure out, you know, why.”

He didn’t elaborate further and Grantaire gave him a look. “I might be touched,” he said dryly, “had you at least gone with Bud Heavy rather than Bud Light. It’s practically water, Enj.”

“Sorry to insult your taste in beer,” Enjolras said, taking a swig from the bottle. “I’ll remember that the next time I go to the store to buy more.”

He turned to head into the bedroom and Grantaire floated closer, concern clear in his expression. “Enjolras—”

“What?” Enjolras asked tiredly.

“Why are you doing this?”

Enjolras stilled, not turning back to Grantaire, his shoulders tense. “Do you remember how you died?” he asked.

Grantaire winced and shook his head. “No. I, uh, I think maybe it’s like in the tv show the Good Place, you know? Where you can’t remember your own death if it was, um, traumatic.” He glanced at Enjolras. “And I have a feeling it was traumatic.”

“That’s an understatement,” Enjolras muttered, taking a long swig from the beer bottle, and other different circumstances, Grantaire might’ve made a comment about the way the pale column of his throat moved as he swallowed.

It spoke volumes that he remained silent.

“You were shot,” Enjolras said, his voice hoarse. “You bled out in front of me. It was too quick for any help to get there.”

He said the facts numbly, but Grantaire’s expression darkened. “I’m sorry,” he said, and now Enjolras did turn to look at him.

“Why are you sorry?” he asked roughly. “The bullet was meant for me. You saved my life.” He huffed a laugh, though there was no humor in it. “You died because of me. And maybe — maybe that’s why you’re still — why you—”

He couldn’t seem to finish it, but Grantaire shook his head anyway. “It’s not,” he told Enjolras. “That’s not why—”

Enjolras cut him off. “So anyway,” he said loudly, “it should’ve been me who died. And this way—” He raised his beer bottle in a mocking salute. “It’s almost like you’re back.”

“Enj—” Grantaire started, his voice pained, but Enjolras ignored him, heading into the bedroom and closing the door after him.

“Enjolras…”

Enjolras looked up, red-eyed, clutching a bottle of whiskey in one fist. “Grantaire,” he said, a little too loudly. “Fancy seeing you here.”

“This is your apartment,” Grantaire reminded him, reaching out as if to take the bottle from his hand, though his hands fell back to his side when he remembered he couldn’t. “I can’t go anywhere else.”

Enjolras snorted. “Yeah, well, whose fault is that,” he muttered.

“Enjolras, please,” Grantaire said, following Enjolras as he drifted through his apartment like more of a ghost than Grantaire himself was. “This isn’t like you.”

“No, but it’s like you,” Enjolras said, collapsing against the couch. “And that’s the whole point.”

Grantaire bit his lip, looking down at Enjolras, frustration and something like fear mingling in his expression. “You’re not being haunted by Grantaire.”

Enjolras paused, bottle halfway to his lips. “What?” he said.

“You might be haunted by something,” Grantaire told him with a sigh, trying to perch on the arm of the sofa, “but it — but I’m — not Grantaire.”

Enjolras stared at him. “What are you talking about?” he asked. “Of course you’re—”

“I’m you,” Grantaire said simply. “Or more accurately, I’m the part of you that loved Grantaire and never got to tell him.”

Enjolras’s mouth snapped closed and he swallowed, hard, the bottle falling from his hand and landing on the floor with a clunk. “What does that mean?” he asked softly.

Grantaire — or the empty shape of him, it seemed — sighed. “It means that when Grantaire died, a part of you died with him,” he said quietly. “The part that loved him, that wanted to build a future with him. The part of you that was afraid to take that next step, even though you knew he loved you.” He shrugged. “And I’m that part of you.”

For the first time in months, tears pricked at the corners of Enjolras’s eyes. “Then how do I get rid of you?”

“By letting him go. By letting that future go.”

Enjolras jerked back, eyes widening. “You want me to forget him?” he spat.

“I don’t think you could if you tried,” Grantaire said honestly. “But there’s a big difference between forgetting and letting go. And you have to keep living, Enjolras. You have to let the part of you that died that day go so that the rest of you can still live. He would want you to — more than anything, it’s what he would want. It’s why he died, so that you could live.” Enjolras shook his head silently, not bothering to stem the tears as they fell. “You have a future you still have to build for yourself, you just — you have to learn to do it without him.”

“What if I don’t know how to do that?” Enjolras whispered.

Grantaire shrugged, somewhat helplessly. “Then you learn. Because otherwise—”

“You’re the only part of him that I have left,” Enjolras told him, his voice raw, pained. “I don’t know if I can let him go.”

“I’m not,” Grantaire said softly. “I’m not all you left. You have your memories, and you still have your love for him. That won’t be lost, even when you let that part of yourself go. And besides, when you let this part of yourself go…” He trailed off, reaching out to rest his transparent hand on top of Enjolras’s, or as close as he could manage. “When you let me go, I’ll find him, wherever he is. He’s waiting for you, and every part of your soul will find his.”

Enjolras closed his eyes. “I love you,” he whispered. “I should’ve told him that when—”

“I know,” Grantaire said.

Enjolras shook his head. “God, he’d think I’m pathetic,” he huffed, drawing a shaky hand across his face.

“He wouldn’t,” Grantaire assured him. “But it wouldn’t hurt to try to be the man he’d expect you to be, even without him.”

Enjolras snorted. “I don’t think even I could live up to the mental image Grantaire had of me,” he muttered.

Grantaire half-smiled. “Luckily for you, I don’t think you ever needed to try,” he said softly.

Though Enjolras managed a small half-smile, it quickly faded, and he sighed heavily. “So I have to let you — let him — go,” he said softly. “And then you’ll just...disappear.”

“Yeah,” Grantaire said, nodding, “but it’ll be ok.”

“How do you know?” Enjolras asked.

Grantaire shrugged. “Because I’ll be with him. And because when you finally manage it, it means you’ll be ok.”

“Promise?” Enjolras asked, somewhat wryly.

“Pretty sure Grantaire would say that the only certainty is his full glass,” Grantaire said mildly. “So in this case, you’ll have to draw on your own faith.”

“I think I still remember how to do that,” Enjolras said with a slight smile. He paused, staring blankly at the opposite wall before offering, “Thanks.”

Grantaire nodded before telling him quietly, “Grantaire loved you. Loves you. Still. Always.”

“I know,” Enjolras whispered.

The ghostly form of Grantaire straightened, already looking slightly paler, slightly more faded. “Remember that, and you’ll be ok,” he told Enjolras.

“I will,” Enjolras promised, with a hint of his old fervor. “I will.”

Amanda’s Undercover Challenge Masterlist

Dean and Sam worked a lot of exciting cases this fall! Thank you to everyone who participated in my challenge and sent our boys Undercover. Go check out all these fun stories!

1. Substitute teachers- The Substitute by @deanandsamsbitch

This was a cute little fic about Dean as a substitute teacher. Great gifs really added to it throughout. Warning: the reader is underage.

2. Caterers- I Know by @because-imma-lady-assface

A fantastic Dean x reader full of amazing sass, a smart reader, an awesome case, and just the right touch of romance. Definitely recommenced: 10/10.

3. Amusement park workers- Ghoul Times by @colagirl5

This was an intriguing, fast-paced Dean x Reader with a ghoul targeting an amusement park’s Haunted Halloween Maze. Exciting until the end!

4. Personal trainers- Like old times by @roxyspearing

This story was a fantastically sassy, thrilling, and fun Sam x Reader. Oh, and it ends smutty. Enough said.

5. Camp counselors- Camp Counselor 1 and 2 and 3 by @katymacsupernatural

This is a fantastic start for an exciting 3-part series! It’s a Dean x Reader that’s definitely worth your time. Funny, twisty, and thrilling all the way through!

6. Repairmen- Ghost Repairs by @homeschooledonmyhands

This is an awesome little case fic with great Sam and Dean moments! A spooky ghost and a brave reader make it a really fun read.

7. Ranch hands- Ranch Hands? I think not Part 1 and 2 by @imaginesforthose-wholovefandoms

Cowboy Dean! Cowboy Dean! Cowboy Dean! Dean and Sam on horses plus a smart, tough reader is definitely a recipe for success. It hits all the right notes.

8. Fashion models- Undercover by @fandomstalker13

As you might imagine, the boys going undercover as fashion models is a load of fun. Top it off with a sassy, spunky reader and you have a very cute little fic!

9. Flight attendants- The Who Of The What? by @mrspadalackles

This was a hilarious, thrilling, and romantic Dean x Reader set in one of Dean’s least favorite places: a plane! The twist surprised even me, so go check it out.

10. Hotel concierge workers- For the Love of Horror by @roxy-davenport

A hot, romantic, smutty Crowley x reader that’s also downright hilarious. And, it has Sam going Harry Potter LARPing. Yes, you heard that right. It’s awesome.

11. Librarians- COMING SOON by @idreamofhazel

12. Museum workers- Museum of Death Part 1 and 2 by @hannahindie

This continuing series feels just like an episode of SPN. It’s so well written, it will draw you right in and keep you interested until the end.

13. Security guards- Security by @georgialouisea

This Dean x Reader was so thrilling, it was actually scary. But, it had just the right balance of romance and humor making it a great read.

14. Casino workers- Rock, Paper, Scissors by @jessicawritessmut

It’s a Dean x Sam x Reader with the two boys going after the same girl. Don’t worry, it ends well for all involved, and it’s a fun ride!

15. Line cooks- Cooking Lessons by @uniquewerewolfsuit

This is an absolutely adorable little drabble with special guests Donna, Jody, and Alex. Dean and Sam aren’t the best line cooks, which makes it even more fun!

16. Massage therapists- Happy Ending by @pinknerdpanda

Oh, you will not regret reading this one. Trust me. It’s a hot hot hot, Sam x Reader smut with just enough emotion and humor to make it peak amazing.

17. Deep sea fishermen- Deep Sea Witches by @samwinjarpad

This was a cute little fic with Dean, Sam, and the Reader on a boat. It had funny moments, cute moments, and exciting moments. It was a wonderful story!

I have three words for you: Smutty Winchester Sandwich. Seriously, that’s it. I mean it has a pretty awesome case too, but the smut makes everything better.
