Fight Food Deserts with Community Gardening
Tumblr media
“Gardening is fun!” When I talked with David Thompson, founder of Food is Free Washington, that’s why he said he started doing it. It was so much fun, in fact, that he grew too much produce in his 2,000 sf garden to use it all himself, so he started giving it away. He went on, “The thing that became more fun than growing my own food was sharing it. It’s the joy of giving stuff away.” That is the heart of the Food is Free movement: building community by sharing food independence.
Read more about the real life gardener who inspired Chapter 3 of Calico Jill and the Search for Cheese!
What Food is Free Does
Food is Free Washington is a non-profit co-run by David and Ursula Thompson in Tacoma, WA. The goal of Food is Free is to take care of our planet and take care of each other in the process by feeding people. The Thompsons seek to reduce food waste by getting food into the hands of local people who need it. They also educate people on how to grow their own food so that our community is more self reliant and less dependent on outside forces.
Food deserts stretch across many of Tacoma’s communities, but especially so in downtown Tacoma, east Tacoma and south Tacoma. A food desert is an area where local residents do not have access to fresh and healthy foods. Food is Free focuses in particular on these communities in need.
While a food bank might serve 50-100 people, Food is Free serves on average 220 people with each food giveaway. Food banks are great resources for gathering food and giving it to those in need, and they even supply Food is Free with donations through the Emergency Food Network and Feeding Feasible Feasts, but Food is Free is so much more effective in its distribution for two reasons: it goes into the heart of communities where there is food insecurity, and there is no requirement to show an ID or prove income. Anyone who shows up gets food. It’s as simple as that.
Food Is Free Sharing Tables
Ursula and David’s solution to the food deserts that stretch across Tacoma is gardening. Food is Free has planted 3,000 square feet of community garden space across the city. They started setting up tables next to these garden plots, and they would set out food for anyone to take.
They encouraged others to follow suit. At the height of the pandemic, there were 97 of these sharing tables scattered around Tacoma which became a sort of mobile food pantry. During a time of social isolation and social distancing, people formed a sense of community around sharing food surplus with each other within their local communities.
These tables were popular for a time, but there were obstacles. Even though the Thompsons would post instructions on accepted and restricted items, there wasn’t enough education about proper food storage. People started dropping off things like chicken breasts and milk, things that would spoil if left on a table.
These days, the total number of food tables is around 10-12, and they are run independently.
Food Accessibility in 2023
One thing the Thompsons are particularly excited about is the Gleaning Project, a program that is run through Harvest Pierce County in which people can sign up to have the fruit trees in their backyards harvested. Last year, 27,000 pounds of produce was harvested thanks to this program and shared with local hunger relief organizations.
Food banks are getting fewer donations than they used to. EBT benefits were cut in March. With rising food inflation, fewer people want to make donations. Add to these factors the job insecurities that we’ve all faced thanks to the pandemic, and more and more people are turning to feeding themselves with their own gardens.
Food is Free Washington is supporting these burgeoning green thumbs with seeds, plant starters and resources. Ursula explained, “You can grow an extra row. You can grow an extra plant. We just want people to do it with us. All of us gardeners together, we can help feed our community.”
Food Is Free Drop Offs
If you live in Tacoma, you can pick up food on Tuesdays in the extra parking lot across from (west of) Hope Point (formerly Calvary Baptist) Church. Address: 6511 South C Street. Follow @tacomaurbanfarmer on instagram to stay abreast what is available from week to week.

Queer Mutual Aid
I've asked for help recently, but we didn't get fully out of the hole yet and it's getting worse. I'm physically disabled and have debilitating PTSD which have made it hellish to find and keep work, particularly outside the house. I've been very ill for most of this past year, including a bout of sepsis where I nearly died. So even my attempts at self-employment have been... less than fruitful overall. I'm also visibly queer/trans in the Deep South, US. We should have been out of the hole this past week, except rent raised to ridiculous because HUD decided I'm not disabled by their standards (?????) so none of my medical expenses count. And I had to put all that aside first so it wouldn't actually get spent on anything. Wife's the one with an actual job outside the house. It pays over minimum but not much more, and not enough for two people to live safely on (especially with my medical expenses). They also have mental disabilities that need to be evaluated that we're only now getting some access for them. Hopefully. Wife's still without a phone currently. They got ripped off by the repair shop they went to and we ended up having to order a new phone anyway because it ended up being cheaper than the further repairs the shop wanted to make on the still not-working phone.
Because Wife is without their phone, they're locked out from the super duper secure government website like food stamps applications. Which we were in the process of when phone broke. We don't have money for groceries. We're nearly out and wife doesn't get paid for another week and a half. We had to entirely skip a planned grocery run. I've already been skipping meals for a while. We're about $90 short for our electric bill due tomorrow. I thought I paid it already. But nope, I hadn't figured in the past due amount when I paid. I'm unsure if we have money for me to make it to both my doctor's appointment on the 29th and the Vocational Rehab assessment on the 4th. I need to pay Uber fare since I can't drive. $55 should give enough padding for both trips and anything else would go toward food. I already rescheduled a post-surgical evaluation, which thankfully wasn't urgent, to a time wife will just be able to drive me. We've been trying to get permission to move my cousin in and applying for various other aid to relieve the situation, but bureaucracy's not been moving fast enough. I have a tip jar, art prints, ttrpg products, and linked commission info at linktr.ee/bekandrew

it's my gut i can't ignore (i'm hungry)
Angel's POV | 9.7K Words
You were seven-years-old, and Mommy said that you were old enough to find your own food. Your stomach curled up inside of you when you looked at her fridge, when you saw her reaching into the tall cabinets to pull down chips, snack cakes, sodas. You would wrap your arms around your middle when you smelled the dinner she made for herself, and counted the change from your five dollar food allowance.
You were seven-years-old, and school had let out for the summer, so you weren’t getting breakfast and lunch five days a week anymore. So, the two of you spent most of your days in Wendy’s, and you spent most of your time hoping that there was enough for both of you.
Guy was four, which meant he would start Pre-K in August. You just had to make it to August
-
It's Angel's job to keep Guy fed and alive, since nobody else cares to. Two kids surviving their hunger in 10,000 words or less.

Grocery shopping/Food
Inflation is a huge thing right now and people keep asking how to lower your grocery budget. I grew up poor. Here are some tips I learned over the years. Just my opinions/tips:
There are alot of things a person can do to build food stability- IF you have the space and resources.
First one is gardening. An herb garden, a patio pot garden or a yard garden. I also did little stints of guerilla gardening, which is basically planting veggies in weird places. You can Google victory gardens to see how they used to do it back in the 40's.
Also, if you have a house with a yard, consider planting a fruit tree and some fruit bushes.
But as far as grocery shopping goes, if you have a limited budget & are on a weight loss journey, the first thing you should do is stop (or severely limit) shopping from the inside grocery aisles.
Why?
Because these foods might seem inexpensive, but it is really common to overeat those foods. They are designed to be hyperpalatable.
I recently saw an episode of Heavy where the person was cooking 3 boxes of some meal.... and eating them all.
If you buy these foods at all, you need to practice portion control with them. Check the box for the serving size and then divide it into individual servings before you start eating it.
It is really important that you don't beat yourself up for wanting this food. It is designed that way. Your body is a biological machine of sorts and it has evolved to *want* foods that have certain levels of fat, salt & carbs. It is because these are the foods that helped us survive.
When shopping the perimeter, I normally take a walk around to see what foods have volume so a low price. Some suggestions are potatoes, collard greens, radishes. But really, I will try anything that is low cost. Give it a shot and see if you like it.
That is how I starting eating collard greens. Walmart had huge bags of them for like $2. I bought a bag and threw in some greens with every meal. Why not?
You don't need designer greens that are $10 a pound.
So yesterday, the thing I would have bought for cheap and tried was fresh bunches of turnips greens for $1.29, and mustard greens for about the same (I am traveling tomorrow so I won't have time so cook it).
Be curious and explore. You may be able to find ways to stretch your budget using unpopular foods. Unfortunately, the internet has popularized some previously staple foods - eggs, cottage cheese, cauliflower etc. But do what you can with what you have, and use portion control so that you are making things last.
Sometimes you can find frozen foods for good prices- I found pags of peas at Walmart for $.84. Peas! Hell yeah! I added Pease to everything. Peas have some protein and a good nutrient profile.
In contrast, a box of weight watchers protein candy bars were $5 for 4 bars. ON SALE. Ugg. That is a treat option... but those food products are so freaking expensive per serving I am trying to limit those.
Other things I did was watch videos on how people got by in the depression...and try some of those meals. Read older books and see what they were eating.
Our food acquisition has changed dramatically in the last 100 years. People used to do alot more foraging, hunting, & fishing. We don't have access to some of those things anymore. And if you do have access, definitely try those things as well. If you have access to buy food from a farmer/rancher, do it.
Now we have food deserts. But that is a post for a different time.

Chimpanzee Mothers: Champions of Play Even in Times of Food Scarcity
ITA version here ESP version here
A recent study conducted in Kibale National Park in Uganda has revealed a surprising behavior among female chimpanzees: despite the scarcity of food, mothers continue to play with their young, playing a crucial role in the physical and social development of their offspring.
Kibale National Park is known to be the most densely populated primate forest in the world, with over 1,000 chimpanzees residing there. Researchers, led by Zarin Machanda and Kris Sabbi from Harvard University, began habituating chimpanzees to human presence in 1987, collecting detailed behavioral observations including climbing, feeding, grooming, and play.
Through the examination of 3,891 episodes of adult play recorded within the chimpanzee community of Kanyawara, researchers not only observed that this practice persists in adults unlike most other mammals, but also evaluated how adult play is influenced by diet quality. While play between adults and unrelated immatures decreased during food scarcity, play between mothers and offspring persisted, suggesting that this type of play was less constrained compared to play with other partners.
The observation that mothers continue to play with their young despite food scarcity underscores the crucial importance of play in the animal world and the extraordinary dedication of chimpanzee mothers in ensuring the well-being of their offspring, even in the most challenging times. This suggests that chimpanzee mothers play a crucial role in the physical and social development of their young, even when facing the threat of food scarcity.
That adult chimpanzees play to build relationships or support learning opportunities for younger group members evaluations of the potential functions and evolution of play are incomplete without considering its costs. The fact that chimpanzee mothers bear these costs even when ecology constrains other aspects of their social behavior primarily reveals a hidden cost of motherhood for this species, where, as with humans, mothers are important play partners for their offspring.

G, 4k, nie mingjue & wei wuxian, nie mingjue & wen remnants
Summary: It's just a little curse... Well, actually, he's still big for his age.
Kay's comments: A delightful little story! I enjoyed reading this a lot. In the story, Nie Mingjue gets age-regressed via curse close to the Burial Mounds and of course, Wei Wuxian takes him in. Neither Nie Mingjue nor Wei Wuxian recognize each other this way, so Nie Mingjue gets an uncensored version of what living in the Burial Mounds is like and he meets and befriends our dearest A-Yuan. Of course, soon enough the Nie Sect turns up, searching for their missing leader…
Excerpt: The radish soup was lousy. A-Jue knew it would be rude to tell Xian-gege this. He could also hear the doctor-lady whispering to him about how they didn’t have enough. Xian-gege and Ning-gege didn't have bowls. People not having enough food was bad. A-Die said that righteous cultivators have to help the common people. A-Jue was going to be a righteous cultivator. Nobody could not have enough food on his watch. The taste problem and the enough problem could be solved with one thing.
canon-divergence, fix-it, age regression/de-aging, burial mounds settlement days, wei wuxian & nie mingjue, nie mingjue & wen remants, cute kids, child nie mingjue, food scarcity, curses

Please remember that food banks are there to support and help out people who need it. Please don’t wait until you literally have no other choice to go to a food bank. If you don’t have enough money to buy everything you need, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with going to a food bank so that you can afford something else that you also need. Also, to anyone who has any money to spare at the moment, or any food they won’t use up, please consider donating to one of these food banks.

Today has been a day already lol. I went to a OBGYN appointment this morning and it went well.
In my appointment I was asked if I am eating and drinking enough. I was honest and said food has been hard recently (didn’t get too into it because I didn’t want to freak anyone out). I then talked to a social worker at the hospital and she gave me some resources in town.
Resources in hand, I picked my fiancé up from our house and we went to a local organization that provides utility assistance. The employees were really nice and helped answer our questions. Now we’re waiting for a call to see if we need to do anything else/if we’ve been approved.
After that we decided to try a food pantry. I used to go to the food pantry as a kid with my mom. I’ve also been many times as an adult, but it’s been a couple years since I’ve been.
The food pantry I used to go to made themselves primarily a mobile pantry. That isn’t that big of an issue, but because I only have one car between me and my partner it can be hard to access. I might try it again though.
The one I went to today was through the Salvation Army. Yes, the Salvation Army is a terrible organization, but they were to only ones open when we were looking.
We waited an hour to fill out paperwork. I was grateful to be able to wait indoors and not in the heat.
While we were waiting I couldn’t help but overhear a conversation between someone seeking assistance and the volunteer/employee.
“Do y’all have any fans?” The heavyset woman asked. She had a slicked back ponytail. She reminded me of myself.
“No. I’m not sure when we will be getting more,” The woman behind the desk answered.
“My house is really, really hot. Is there anyway I could get a fan?” She asked again. I could hear the desperation in her voice and it made me want to do something. The woman behind the desk shook her head no.
I thought about offering her one of our small, crappy fans we had just been using to cool down our 86 F house. I wanted to say,
“Girl I’m so sorry. We just got our air conditioner fixed and I understand living in a hot house”, but I couldn’t. I couldn’t guarantee my help would be better than what she already had.
The sad truth is also that I may need my shitty fan back. Our house is so much cooler than it was, but it’s still 77 F. It’s only going to get hotter from here. A selfish part of me knew I needed to keep my fans in case we need them.
The heat exhausted woman left. I felt empty.
Finally, we got some food. At some food pantries I’ve been to you get to choose what you get. This was a “you get what you get” sort of deal. Which is fine.
I was excited when I peaked at the four grocery bags from the pantry but decided to look completely when we got home.
Once I started putting food away did I start to feel stupid. Stupid as in, “you deserve what you’re getting for assuming your problems will be fixed with one pantry visit”.
We got a box full of glazed donuts. I was so excited until I picked the box up and noticed it was physically and visibly wet. The donuts leaked on the kitchen table. The expiration date said July 1st. Today is July 11th.
I don’t mind eating expired food but these were inedible. My partner tried microwaving one to give it a taste test. He isn’t usually squeamish with food but he couldn’t even swallow one bite.
Oh well.
The rest of the food was alright. There’s some things I’m very grateful for, like eggs, sausage patties and biscuit mix. Canned fruit cocktail. We also got some frozen catfish fillets! I have never cooked catfish before but my partner is excited to possibly fry it. Those things I’m very excited for.
There were some other things I am kind of bummed over. We got a large bag of frozen blueberries, which I’m glad to have…but we already had frozen blueberries. They happen to also be one of my least favorite fruits lol. Food is good though and beggars can’t be choosers. So now I just have an abundance of blueberries. I’ll have to find a recipe. Maybe blueberry pancakes.
I got a large can of pork from the pantry. I’ll save it in case of emergencies, but canned meat makes me feel so sick.
Tumblr media
Picture from online for reference lol.
Now I’m home for the day and I feel like I should be doing more. Even though I’ve done a lot of things already today, I can’t help but feel time slipping through my fingers sitting on this shitty couch.
As I sit, I feel like I should go find another food pantry, hustle around town, anything that could help us survive. But my body is saying stay home.
I’ve talked to too many new people today. I don’t know if I can handle going to any more food pantries and explaining our financial situation over and over to people who have heard worse.
I’m going to fill a bowl, smoke out the window, and maybe try eating some of the new food.
I am excited for the food I can make. Now I could make breakfast sandwiches with the biscuit mix, frozen sausage patties and leftover American cheese slices from the fridge.
I know we will be okay. Every day things slowly get better.

How can we ask someone to diet when we're not addressing things like poverty, food scarcity and housing instability? I had a 15-year-old patient who had been told by doctors to lose weight and his family has been living in extreme poverty. They had a change in their financial circumstances, and he said to me 'do you know what the best part about having money is? You can buy fruit that isn't mouldy'. Surgery and medication should be the last resort.

Fethurin: Woodelven Sindarin, Secret Soul.
Project's current title: Winterleaf.
(text starts here).
As they walked through the hall to Legolas's bathing chamber, Fethurin asked, "How long are you going to keep me your forbidden secret by the way?"
"For as long as it takes to ensure Captain Tauriel that you are no threat to our kingdom," Legolas answered. "If I cannot even convince her, my father's heart will be unwinnable. She is one of our key officers in matters of security. He will trust her judgement."
"And why won't he trust yours?" Fethurin asked.
"Because, tithen thurin…" Legolas sighed, clutching his heart in one hand and enveloping his junior's shoulders with the other―telegraphed, of course. As with the hug, Fethurin hesitated, but once inside Legolas's affections, he leaned into them like the kitten he was. "My father considers me yet a child. The minute he discovers you, he will have you tossed into our dungeons and the key thrown away. Afterwards, I will receive a lecture about how naive I am every day for the next five-hundred years of my life."
Fethurin had no immediate reaction that Legolas could discern. He seemed more concerned with matters of cuddling than his potential impending captivity. Legolas couldn't help but smile at him. Perhaps this cat wouldn't be so feral if he received more affection. And since Thranduil wasn't exactly super cuddly these days…
For whatever reason, Fethurin fell under the impression that he had to disentangle from his host in order for the door to open. Legolas made short work of reeling him back in. He had more than one arm, after all.
Legolas collected his favorite soaps and scrubs while Fethurin took in the room.
"Fancy," he said in a way that got Legolas believing it would not take any additional arguments to convince him to bathe more often; for indeed, this room was much more elaborate than the shower closet. Leaves swept across the tiles in a spiraling pattern towards the drains which formed the cores of sunflowers. Lanterns filled the room with soft, warm light and a delicate floral scent. The basin itself could be sat in for a good, long soak―which is exactly what Legolas intended to do. His muscles ached for it.
After collecting towels and robes, he showed Fethurin how to temper the waters and where to set his clothes. Normally, he'd have servants prepare the bath for him, but the less people fluttering about his room during this time, the better. The less he gave them to speak of Fethurin, the better-kept secret he'd be.
Once again, Legolas was unnerved by how many ribs and spinal knobs he saw on Fethurin. He intended to tell the servants to increase his portions whenever possible. If Skyrim's housing prices were any indication, food could not have been easy to acquire either...

Humans have an evolved mechanism to eat whenever food is available. -Mark Leary Duke University
--Developed countries don't currently deal with the kind of food scarcity of our past. This is a reminder to check yourself-- you may not need to eat just because your body or mind is telling you to.
Be self aware. Cultivate that in yourself.
Have you eaten enough? When will food be available again?
If you haven't, go ahead. Eat. Be mindful of portions and eat for your goals.
If you have, it is ok to say no. It is ok to skip eating something that does not align with your goals. Especially if you have more nutritive or mindful options at home.
Writing this to myself as a personal note to stop over consumption. The people pleasing. The resources I am taking could be used for someone else. I don't need to eat multiple meals when others are going hungry.
