My Top 12 Favorite Anime of 2023 (and more)!

This was a great year for anime, so here's a long list of my top 12 (including some bonus great anime). If you get tired of clicking the review links, check out my anime overview collection for all of them here. You can also check out my list of favorite manga here!

Some of these are ongoing, so consider those only a review of the first cour-- no official endorsement on the rest because it hasn't aired yet!

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury (Season 2)

When I listed G-Witch in last year's top anime list, I prayed the show wouldn't betray me. Fortunately, it didn't! Though the final half of the show was a bit rushed, it remained must-see, compelling sci-fi full of exciting twists and turns. And I adore the well developed romance between the robot-piloting protagonist and precious girl, Suletta, and her fierce fiancé, Miorine. Whether you’re here for starcrossed queer lovers, robots wrecking each other, tense battles between opposing political factions, or morally-horrifying moms on a revenge spree, you’re in for a treat.

Yuri is my Job!

Hime is roped into working at a cafe where the waitresses playact as students of the fictional all girl’s school from a beloved novel series. However, Hime finds her co-worker, Mitsuki, has an inexplicable grudge against her. Thus begins a tangled web of romance and wounded feelings among the girls in the cafe! Yuri is My Job seems like a fun comedy boasting a cast full of quirky lesbians, but then reveals itself to be a complicated and fascinating examination of performance- as it intersects with queerness, girlhood, and the desire to be “likeable” and “cute". It's top-tier lesbian drama full of fraught relationships and it's absolutely worth a watch.

The Apothecary Diaries (still ongoing, review is for the first cour)

Though it's still going, I have to sing the praises of this dazzling anime about a saavy apothecary who uses her medical expertise to solve the many murders and betrayals in the Emperor's palace. MaoMao is a fantastic lead, a poison-obsessed gremlin who's whip-smart, deadpan, and fun to follow. The Apothecary Diaries has intrigue, well-developed characters, and an impeccable atmosphere. It tells a great range of stories, from romantic triumph, to bittersweet tales of recovering from grief, to pure tragedies. I'm totally hooked.

The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady

When Euphie is dumped by her fiance at a ball, the oddball princess Anis rescues her. Euphie becomes Anis' assistant in her quest to develop magical tools. The girls also start to develop feelings for each other, while discovering a conspiracy among the nobility. I'm always desperately in need of cool lesbians having action-packed fantasy adventures, and Magirevo delivers. The characters grow in entertaining ways, we get to see them fight dragons in killer action scenes, and the romantic development is completely satisfying. It's a simple story at its core, but the lovable characters, joyous queerness and jubilant execution make it a great watch.

Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story (Season 2)

In the second season of the anime about girls homoerotically golfing while dealing with the mafia and ludicrous family drama, Birdie Wing remains a bombastically absurd sports anime that is fun all the way through. Please come watch these girls get ridiculous sports injuries, scream their super golf attacks, experience extremely extra plot twists--and be super gay with each other, of course. The finale didn't go quite as hard as I wanted (and the romance is more subtexual than I wanted), but you need to allow yourself to experience the madness of Birdie Wing.

Skip and Loafer

An endearingly dorky, earnest, and driven girl moves from her small town to Tokyo. While she struggles to adjust, she befriends a nice popular boy who's got some baggage. Skip and Loafer is a show that’s like a warm hug. It's sweet, entertaining and funny. It handles adolescent struggles with tender nuance. There's a emphasis on kindness, connection, and looking past stereotypes and misconceptions. It also includes a trans character who's treated with respect (and is a great character in general!) Let this show touch your heart.

Undead Murder Farce

An immortal woman has had most of her body stolen by a mysterious man. Reduced to a head carried around by her maid, she teams up with a half-demon man to track the thief down while solving supernatural mysteries all across Victorian England.

This a fun, campy mystery series starring three asshole weirdo protagonists, it’s bursting with supernatural creatures and literary references. We've got Sherlock Holmes, The Phantom of the Opera, Carmilla and more...along with a vampire murders and werewolf drama galore. UDM is a wonderful romp with stylish, slick direction... and it’s unexpectedly really gay. I’m aching to see more of these scrappy misfits and their adventures.

Migi & Dali

A story of twins who are pretending to be one kid in order to fool their foster parents and find out who killed their mother. It starts out as an utterly absurd comedy becomes a impressive and genuinely tense murder mystery that is incredibly moving at times, all while keeping up it’s signature brand of goofiness. There’s genuine commentary on abuse, the damage you can do to children by forcing perfection on them, the struggle of being a foster kid, grief and recovery and more. There's also some great character development. It's a weird one, but it's absolutely worth sticking with.

Pluto

Somebody is killing the most advanced robots in the world and murdering humans alongside them. A robot detective is trying to track this killer down, but he might be compromised as well. Pluto is a tense, tense, tightly plotted robot murder mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Through robots, it explores the idea of being a tool in a corrupt system, and tackles subjects like war, imperialism, and the nature of hatred. It's a masterful psychological thriller with stunning animation and a rich story.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off

This anime approaches the story of Scott Pilgrim and Ramona's seven evil exes from a brands new angle, and the results are great. We get a exploration of relationships and regrets, the messiness of communication and connection, the trials of becoming an adult, all with the signature goofy video game antics. Characters neglected in previous iterations finally get their due, new facets of the story are explored, queer relationships are delved into more, girls kiss...and it's all accompanied by phenomenal animation and a killer soundtrack.

Soaring Sky! Precure

Sora lives in a world called Skyland and wants to be a great hero. When rescuing the kidnapped baby princess, she falls through a portal to earth. There she meets her fellow magical warriors, and as Precure they protect the princess from the villains!

This vibrant, warm-hearted adventure got me back on the Precure train! This series boasts a lot exciting firsts for the franchise--the first official male cure, the first main cure that's eighteen years old- but above all, it has a lively team of characters with who have an entertaining dynamic and enjoyable individual journeys. It's often very funny, the baby has a surprisingly good character arc, and it's bursting with magical girl (and boy) goodness! It's also not afraid to give you an emotional gutpunch when you've been lured into a false sense of security by all the fun times. If you're new to Precure, this is a great jumping on point, and if you've watched it before, this is a series you won't want to miss.

I'm in Love with the Villainess

Rae is reincarnated as the heroine of her favorite dating sim. But she has no interest in romancing any of the boys- she’s head over heels for Claire Francois, the snooty villainess.

Villainess may not be as polished--storywise or animation-wise-- as these other entries. It's a messy series, it has plenty of problems...but it's also very fun, and it touched my queer little heart like no other. Queer people get to indulge in our imperfect faves too, and the silly shenanigans, blatant lesbian wish fulfillment, honest advocacy for queer people, and the joy and earnestness of the series works for me!

Some Other Great Anime:

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (still ongoing, review is for the first cour)

Frieren is a long-lived elf who was once part of an adventuring party that saved the world from the Demon Lord. But now her friends are passing away and the world is moving on. She decides to retrace her old party's journey so she can understand what she's feeling.

Frieren is both an interesting examination of what happens after the hero saves the world, as well as a meditation on mortality, grief, and the endless march of time. It takes you on a quiet, beautiful and sometimes touching journey though a pastoral fantasy world. There's some breath-taking animation and excellent atmosphere to enjoy.

Spy x Family (Season 3)

Spy x Family is pretty much staying the course from when we last checked in, though this season gives a lot more attention to Yor, and I love the cruise ship arc and all the ridiculous fights she gets into a lot! That arc contains some of my favorite gags of the series too (like Loid’s attempts to be a cool dad). Otherwise, Spyfam has settled into a series that intends to be around for the long haul, so don’t expect too much forward plot momentum. And Yuri (the man, not the genre) unfortunately still exists. Overall it was good season and remains a fun adaptation. Yor, please step on me.

I don't if your okay with this but if its okay I'd lot to request another thing (I just can't get enough for your writings)

So basically this would take place during a battle similar to the final in frosen empie (or just go with the actual fight) and the reader had gone to try and help Phoebe but the sewer dragon tried to stop them which resulted in the getting hurt pretty badly but they just bearly managed to win and after everything was over and they laid eyes on lars they ran at eachother and held on tightly think that they'd lost eachother but of course they didn't.

Did my best to come up with an idea off of the prompt of: running into each other's arms after barely surviving

Your grip on your proton gun tightened, creeping through the tunnel. It felt too quiet. You’d been wandering for a few monists, looking for the next ghost that would spring out at you. It had been too long without a sighting. You were alone and on edge.

Turning the corner, you hefted the gun higher. Nothing. Another empty hall. You trudged forward, sweeping your gaze over the space in front of you. Trying to keep your footsteps silent, you crept forward, knuckles turning white from how tight your grip was.

A scream went up from somewhere in the distance. You bolted, not evening thinking about it. Your feet pounded through the tunnels, not bothering with keeping quiet as you tried to get to the scream in the rabbit warren under the building. You skidded around a corner, finding Phoebe with a proton stream coming close to your head. You ducked, swearing as you did your best to avoid the destruction tearing through the stone of the wall.

A high pitched giggle drew your attention to the huge ghost standing at the end of the tunnel. You rose as Phoebe swept back towards it, the panic clear on her face. You braced your feet, ready to use your own gun to help her.

A body burst through the ground between the two of you. Stumbling back, you cursed again, losing your footing. The sewer dragon, the same fucker that had been plaguing you for so long. You weren’t even near Hell’s Kitchen. It shouldn’t be there.

Jaws snapped at you. Rolling, you got onto hands and knees, trying to crawl away. The gun was abandoned in your desperation to put space between you and the ghost. your heart was thudding in your ears and you were desperate to get out of the way.

The tail flung around, catching you in the ribs, sending you flying. You slammed into the wall, your breath rushing out of your body. You fell to the ground with a heavy thud. Bracing your feet, you pushed up again, tugging on your proton pack to get your gun again.

Sending the proton stream towards the sewer dragon, you pressed against the wall, aching and bruised. The tail got caught by the stream. Thrashing against the hold of the stream, it let out a high pitched screech.

Its body slammed into the wall, sending a shockwave towards you. Falling forward, you caught yourself on your hands, unsteady and unbalanced. You rolled out of the way as it’s tail came down towards you.

“Phoebe,” you called out.

“Busy,” she shouted back.

Still around the corner, you could hear her own battle going on. A piece of rock fell, smashing into your shoulder. Your moment of distraction had been a mistake. You scrabbled away, trying to get back to your feet. Another shockwave went though the ground, making you have to stop to keep your balance.

Another piece of rock fell from above. You dived out of the way, grasping your gun. Letting a stream go free, you did your best to catch it, to stop it from moving. A thump, a crash, a cloud of dust rising int the air. A hacking cough came from you as you breathed it in, desperate for air in your lungs.

The sewer dragon screeched again, thrashing against the hold you had on it. You held on, letting yourself be dragged across the tunnel. You slammed into the far wall again but you held on. You had to deal with this and then you could go help Phoebe. This was your job. You had to do it. You had to go help the teenager and get the situation under control.

Jaws full of pointed teeth opened above you. You had to throw yourself out of the way or be caught up in them. The tail whipped out again and you found yourself flying through the air, still able to move you from the proton stream connecting you to it. Slamming into the ground, once, twice, three times, your finger slipped from the trigger and the stream cut off.

You ached, your entire body was one giant bruise. The breath had been knocked so far out of you it wasn’t clear if it was coming back. You wheezed, the dust in your lungs and your eyes burning. it was growing difficult to see and you were trying to drag air into your body.

Something cracked above you. You rolled onto your back, squinting through the dust and the darkness. Something fell, stone smashing into the ground beside you.

“Fuck,” you weren’t even aware of saying.

You tried to scramble away as stone continued to fall from above. Curling into a ball, you pressed against the wall, trying to keep out of the way of the collapse going on around you.

It took a long time for the world to settle around you. Looking up, opening your eyes, you found yourself in a small gap, stone keeping you blocked in. You pushed against one with your foot, not even able to extend your leg fully. It shifted slightly, but didn’t give. You tried again, pressing back against the wall to give yourself more leverage.

Someone shouted your name in the distance. You called out, hoping to get someone’s attention. You kept digging your fingers into the rocks, trying to pry them apart. You needed air. You needed escape. The walls were closing in on you.

Another rock shifted, over to your right. You cried out as one fell, striking your shoulder. Another rock shifted. Doing your best to help, you dragged rocks away, unable to duck away when a few fell towards you.

“Are you okay?” Phoebe asked, her face peering in at you as she kept hauling rocks away.

“I think that’s all relative,” you replied.

“We need to find the others,” she said.

Your mind flashed to the rest of the team. Gary, Callie, Trevor, Lucky. Lars. If something had happened to Lars you might not recover. You might lose your mind.

“Do you know what happened to them?” you asked, slow to climb out of the hole you’d been trapped in.

Lars rushed past, going after the sewer dragon after the earthquake stopped,” she said, “he told me to find you. I think Mum was heading to the surface.”

“Did you get him? The big guy?” you asked, leaning heavily on her.

“Yeah, I’ve got him,” she said, tapping the still smoking trap at her hip, “we should be done now. If the others did their part.”

“Let’s get out of here then.”

Every single part of you ached. You took slow steps with her, heading out, trying to find your way back to world. The rabbit warren worked against you, leading you in circles until sunlight began to break through from above.

You stumbled out, into the fresh air of the surface. You coughed again, trying to brush the dust from your eyes. Phoebe ducked out from under you, running off as she caught sight of her mom. You swayed, eyes scanning the crowd that had gathered, watching from a safe distance.

Your eyes alighted on a figure, standing hunched, gaze sweeping over the people. You straightened when he paused on you. One step forward then he broke out into a run. You began to limp towards him, going as fast as you could. The look of relief on Lars’ face became clearer the closer you got.

Flinging yourself at him, he caught you, lifting you off the ground. Your face was buried in his neck. Your legs around his waist, the aches unimportant as you felt how solid he was against you. He was real, he was there, he was okay. The aching sob surprised you, tears gathering while the fear seeped out of your body.

“Are you okay?” he asked, the frantic tone so different from how cool and collected he usually was, “please tell me you’re okay.”

“I’m okay,” you parroted back.

You felt the sigh of relief, still wrapped around him.

“Are you…” You didn’t know how to finish your question, wanting to know everything, wanting to make sure he was okay and the others were okay and that you’d won.

“I’m fine,” he replied, “we’re all fine.”

You were slow to be put down, your arms still around his neck, his wrapped around your waist so tightly you were pressed together. His lips pressed to your temple, nose brushing your hairline, lingering. Your fingers wound through his hair, right at the nape of his neck, holding on. You needed to feel him there.

“I thought you’d… I saw the cave in,” he said.

“You didn’t want to dig me out?” you asked.

“I left Phoebe to get you. I wanted to get the bloody thing that put you in danger,” he replied, sounding angrier than you’d expect.

“And did you?” you asked, catching his eye.

“It won’t ever hurt you again,” he promised, sounding deadly serious.

You could feel him, so steady against your body. His heart was beating, pulse thrumming, breath ghosting over your face as he bent towards you. You didn’t even think about it, just grateful he was still there with you. He was still breathing. He was still alive.

You pulled him down, closer, your lips finding his. The way he kissed you, it was like he was worried you were going to disappear any second. That he had to make the most of it because you might not be there again. He had no idea.

It was desperate, a release of all the panic and anxiety and pent up emotions. You couldn’t get close enough. You needed more of him. You wanted to feel all of him. You wanted to be reminded how alive he was and you were and the future you could have together.

“Oi, stop sucking face and get over here.”

You ignored Trevor, kissing Lars deeper, more, longer. He wasn’t giving you space, but was matching you for every kiss.

“We need to get back,” Trevor tried again.

It didn’t stop either of you.

“I guess I’ll just have to drive the van back myself then,” he called over.

“Fuck,” Lars mumbled against your lips, “he’s not fucking doing that.”

“Later then,” you said.

“If you think I’m letting you go in any other vehicle but mine you’re mad,” he said, lacing your fingers together, “I’m not letting you out of my sight ever again.”

“That might get a bit awkward,” you giggled.

“Worth it.”

He caught your cheek in one palm, kissing you again, lingering long enough to make Trevor cough to stop you before it became too much.

“So that’s a no to driving?” he asked, falling into step beside the two of you.

“Go bother someone else,” Lars all but growled, “we’ll see you back there.”

“Don’t take any detours,” he called, peeling away to join his family.

Lars grumbled under his breath but softened when you squeezed his hand. You pressed your lips to the back of his hand, uncaring of the sweat and dust and grime. It was Lars, and that was good enough for you.

You came round for tea to talk about a new antique collection opening up at Mingxing Jewelry

You were talking and having such a good time that the time itself escaped you

Realising that you were getting ready to leave as you just refused a cup of tea and was asking the whereabouts of your outing jacket Zhongli couldn't help but feel a little sad, after all he hasn't had this much fun in aeons.

"Ah, Y/N, speaking of the new diadem they're about to release I believe i have a similar set of bracelets and charms in my collection, would you like to see?"

"Oh I couldn't, its much too late I'd hate to intrude" you did really wanted to see it as the diadem caught your eye when you saw it but you didn't want to come off as rude.

"Nonsense, stay as long as you'd like, even stay the night if you must, now where did I keep that box?" He stood up searching around his cabinets to find the box with the said look alikes. You stood up and followed him into the other room admiring other objects around his house such as different ornate tea sets, amulets of shining cor lapis and noctalucas jade.

"Ah here it is" Zhongli took out a wooden box with a few carvings on top and blew it free of dust, when he opened it up you could only be shocked at the pure craftsmanship the relics showed. "Oh my Zhongli, where on earth did you get this?" You stepped forward seeing the charms and other assortments of trinkets shimmer in the candle light like stars in the reflection of Luhua pool. He held up a necklace with 4 main charms, one depicting a phoenix on the far left, one a blazing dragon on the far right and in the centre ribbons of clouds were present. "I think this one in particular would look stunning on you".

You were business parter and a childhood friend of Diluc

You visited the Dawn Winery to talk about preparations for the upcoming Wienlesefest

Diluc was already so used to your presence and the very sound of your voice he didn't realise that the meeting was finished as you organised different accounting papers and stall renting contracts

"Y/N, come here a moment please?" You were just packing up when you looked up and saw Diluc standing by the stairs infront of a painting depicting Diluc's old family Manor, the same one he sold when his father died.

As confused as you were you complied and got up, looking at the painting he was standing infront of, "Whats the matter Master Diluc?" Standing this close to him made you nervous, ever since his 4 year departure he had greatly changed and it still had yet to full render to you as all you could see was the hardworking and adventurous Diluc of the past, the one who wouldn't hesitate to throw a smile to any passerby in the streets.

"Please, drop the formalities, Diluc will do just fine" he missed the way you would call him Diluc without care, calling him is nickname "Luc" if you were feeling cocky much to the love annoyance of Diluc and the amusement of Kaeya.

"Yes of course, Diluc, what is it you need?" trying to remain as formal as possible lest you get too casual and slip up. "Do you remember when me you and Kaeya would run under and over the grape trellises much to the chagrin of the staff?" He let out a low chuckle as he went back to the past, remembering simpler times.

Times that are now long behind you both.

You weren't around at Kaeya's in any official capacity, just visiting him as a friend

You just got back from your 1 month trip in Liyue to celebrate the Lantern Rite but in the meantime you left Kaeya awfully lonely

You were just nursing a glass of dandelion wine when you looked out the window, seeing only the pitch black of night and the streetlights of Mondstadt

He followed your line of sight, knowing immediately that you were aware of the time, he always was but didn't want to point it out so he could bask in your company just a little longer

"It was lovely seeing you again Kaeya but it appears I've overstayed my welcome" You got up from the comfort sofa, put on you coat and picked up your bags.

Personally Kaeya thought there was no such thing, you could stay as long as you'd like, infact he wouldn't mind if you decided to move in right then and there, but right now he wanted your attention just a little longer.

"Don't go just yet dear, I've yet to let you taste the good wines I saved up for us, you wouldn't let me and the 50 year oak barrel aged expensive wine down now would you?" He gave a small pout trying to coax you into staying, he actually got the wine for free after a little pestering of his dear brother Diluc, going on how it was for a "special occasion" and he wouldn't dare rob his brother of a "shot at love would he?". Dilux totally would "rob him of his chance at love" if it wasn't for Adelinde convincing him to cave.

You glanced over at Kaeyas admittedly convincing face and the wine that gave out such a fragrent aroma. "Fine, but it better be good" you sat back down and poured yourself a glass. "Trust me, my wine recommendations are never wrong" he smirked at your face as you savoured the flavour of the wine.

You and Rosaria were out at the tavern as usual, you guys were regular drinking buddies as she had gotten tired of taking care of Kaeya when he got too drunk

You didn't exactly have the stomach or the liver for that matter to keep up with her so you mixed in grape juice with your wine to stop you from throwing up half your body weight

Seeing that the patrons were dwindling and Charles who was manning the bar seemed to be cleaning up the counter you told Rosaria you guys should probably get going now

She didn't want to be kicked out of the tavern so she agreed, but wanted to crash at your place claiming "I'd never hear the end of it from the other sisters if I came back drunk"

Getting her back to your house was surprisingly easy, you took her up to your room and decided to sleep in the living room. Placing her down you go get a pillow for yourself when you hear her whisper;

"Y/N, get over here a sec" you made your way over to the women, she grabbed your arm and pulled you into your bed.

"Its your house, you should atleast still sleep in your own bed" she nonchalantly said and immediately fell asleep.

You're gonna be stuck with this one for a while it seems. But to be completely honest, you wouldn't have it any other way.

You were good friends with Ningguang far before she became the Tianquan or even as rich as she was now.

Both of you were celebrating the outstanding success of her latest business pursuit

It was incredibly late but knowing she definitely had the room you asked if you could stay over for the night

"Why of course, it would be dangerous trying to leave when its this dark but you see....." Ningguang tapped her nail guards against her ornate teacup in thought, "I'm currently having the only spare room renovated, it seems you must sleep in my quarters, no bother."

You hadn't heard or seen any evidence of construction but you just assumed either they were out late or ordered to not leave anything so to keep up the Jade Chamber's prestigious image. "I'd hate to intrude in your own quarters but, if needs must" You didn't give much argument, rather liking the idea of sleeping in the same room as the almighty Tianquan of the Liyue Qixing, someone almost untouchable, not to you atleast.

"I will inform the staff to move your items to my quarters, i'll be there in a bit as I have some work to finish up." She stood up and made her way to her desk as one of her assistants guided you to her room.

Ningguang infact didn't have any leftover work, she just desperately needed to sort out her raging blush as to not alarm you.

She'll have to do something about this soon it seems.

As a distinguished member of the crux fleet you and the other members were enjoying one of your weekly celebrations to keep spirits up

Beidou insisted you sit next to her, for 'no reason in particular'

She drinks as she usually does, god how is she still alive? Thats another question

As everything was settling down you told the captain you were going to get on one of the rowboats and sail back to the harbour to meet your family

You hadn't drank anything so you were perfectly sober

"Thank you so much for the celebration captain but my family are waiting, tell the crew to not fall overboard in a drunken stupor" Freeing the boat from the ropes you were about to jump in until your 'honourable' captain stumbled over and cut the rope either her knife making the boat unaccessible.

"Whoops my hand slipped, guess you'll have to stay here sorry" she grabbed your shoulder and brought you back to the rest if the crew, she didn't leave your side all night.

Ah your beloved captain with her love and alcohol drunk shenanigans.

You first met the illusive adeptus Xiao when you got into some trouble with a group of treasure hoarders, you're adept at fighting but you forgot your weapon at the wangshu inn where you were staying.

As the man with the crossbow loaded in his bolt you saw nothing but green and black

When your vision cleared you saw the group on floor, not dead just incapacitated and a figure standing in the middle

You recognised him from ancient scriptures and illustrations and also the proud mother hen rambling of Verr Goldet.

You said your thanks to the guardian yaksha but he teleported away mid thanks, you weren't gonn let him get away that easily!

Climbing up the multitude of stairs up into the top balcony was harder than you thought, most likely because you ran back to the inn all they way from guili planes.

Once you made it up all there was that proved the Yaksha presence was the smoke of green and flakes of black. So he tried to play hard to get huh? Well that wasn't going to stop you. You sat down in the middle and gave your thanks, nothing too sweet or formal but archons you hoped he was here or you'd just seem like a lunatic if anybody saw.

The Yaksha was definitely here, you could his presence. You started to tell stories of your travels, how you were born in Fontaine but the strict rules amd etiquette was not to your tastes, so you left. You went on about your life again, hoping he was at least listening, for what felt like a few hours, as the moon was about to take its podium at the peak of the sky you thought it'd be best if you went to bed now.

"Well thank you, hopefully if you were listening, for time o' great adeptus of wangshu inn" you let out a chuckle, you couldn't take yourself seriously when you spoke like that, "but alas I must retire now, goodnight. "

Just as you were breaching the threshold into the building you heard a worship and suddenly a gloved hand with an anemo vision was on your wrist, you heard a gruff voice behind you but you didn't dare look back. "Wait...I.. uh, would like to hear more if thats ok." For someone so feared he acted so shy, thats adorable.

You once again wordlessly sat down again and began where you left off, the presence a little closer this time.

Looks like you were going to be telling stories for awhile.

You were long time acquaintances with the Guuji, Yae Miko as you used to be a shrine maiden but resigned since your mother got sick and you had to take care of her.

You always tried to visit the shrine as much as you could since you had made many friends and was quite popular in your time there.

Sadly the Guuji rarely made and an appearance whenever you were on shift but you've met about 3 times. All of them featured relentless teasing.

Many of your colleagues faced the same "endearments" but somehow you never noticed how Lady Yae's comments always seemed so personal

She knew what your favourite food was, the days you prefer to be present at the shrine etc

As you were packing up your incense after praying for your mother's good health and saying goodbye to your friends, halfway down the path leading down the mountain you came face to face with the Guuji Yae herself.

"Good afternoon Lady Yae" you greeted her as formally as you could, former boss or not she still deserved respect due to her social standing....that and you feared what would happen if you didn't, only the Shogun knows what happens to those who disrespect the Lady Kitsune.

"Ah, little one, yes how are you and your mother keeping up?" Her usually snarky tone wasn't present today, strange. "We're getting by, thank you for your concern, Lady Yae." You bowed your head slightly to show gratitude, but what you didn't expect was that when you raised your head, the Guuji Yae had her hand outstretched.

"Please do accompany me for some sakura sake and mochi, the ones I ordered just arrived, i'd love it of you'd join me"

Who were you to say no to the Guuji Yae, especially not when she sounded oh so genuine.

You were a long time retainer of Kamisato Ayato, the work you did in the Yashiro Commission was something your prided yourself on.

Taking care of the two siblings, preparing meetings, sorting out any refreshments and fetching Ayato his necessary boba, according to him

You wandered how long this place would last without you, as you seemed to do everything that's way above your pay grade, but nevermind, if you get to help thats payment enough.

After sorting out merchant documents and foreign visas for the upcoming iradori festival, you were about to head out when you felt something on your wrist.

"Is anything the matter My Lord?" You immediately thought that you must've left some paperwork unfinished, caught up in the small chit-chat you were having with the Commissioner while going about your tasks.

"Yes, I believe we missed some work on the transport needed for the foreign guests" He said calmly, letting go of your wrist. Last you checked he sent those to Ayaka to complete as she insisted to help.

"Did Lady Ayaka not complete them?" You asked, starting to worry for the ladys health as she never once let a task go unfinished. Immediately his face went red, maybe he forgot he sent them over? Or...?

"No, that was a lie, Ayaka completed them, just spent more time with me?" He eventually fussed up and gave you the best pleading look he could, in that moment your "regal" Lord resembled a lost puppy in the rain.

Who could expect you to refuse? You were even tempted to give him a kiss on the cheek to try and lift his declining mood as the silence went on.

Prompt: Tropesgiving Day 2: One Bed Pronouns: None Mentioned Physical Sex: None Mentioned Rating: G/Fluff Warnings: Snotlout the flirt, the twins fight, written with a male reader in mind - but it's never stated Summary: When someone forgets to bring enough blankets for the no-dragon training trip the group ends up having to share the few they do have.

When Hiccup first opened his mouth you thought you heard him wrong, but as he pulls the mix of fabrics and pelts from the travel bag his words are proven.

“That’s three blankets and one pelt.” Astrid confirms as she lays them out between the group.

“I could’ve sworn I packed seven!” Hiccup exclaims.

“Not everyone can be as good at counting as I am.” Tuffnut nudges his sister. “See, watch. One, two, three, four, five…” He pauses.

“Six?” Ruffnut suggests.

“No, no. I think it’s ten”

“Then what’s after ten?”

“As much as I would love to let you guys count for the rest of your lives, I’m a little worried about us possibly dying in the cold.” Fishlegs say as he begins to fiddle with his hands in nervousness.

“Look, we’ll be fine.” Snotlout insists. “I’ll just have Hookfang-“

“We don’t have the dragons, Snotlout. This was supposed to be a simple training exercise.” Astrid groans as her hands stretch out the blankets. “Maybe we can cut them.”

“With what though?” You join her in looking over what little protection the group will have from the cold. “If we use a sword or an axe we might damage it so much that we can’t use it.”

“We can’t risk it.” Hiccup decides, kneeling down to pick up the pelt. “I guess we’ll have to share.”

He hands the pelt to you and passes out the blankets, one to Ruffnut and a larger one to FIshlegs.

“No way am I sharing with you!” Tuffnut says as he tries to wrestle the blanket away from his twin.

“I don’t want to share with you anyway!”

“Guys, guys stop!” Hiccup tries and fails to get their attention. “Whatever, Fishlegs isn’t gonna fit under a blanket with anyone else, so you’re on your own.”

“Fine by me!” The gentle giant smiles, holding his blanket close to his chest.

“That just leaves us.” Astrid mumbles as a blush spreads across her cheeks.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa, you expect Snotlout and I to share the pelt?” You glance between Snotlout and your other friends.

“Unless you want to take one of the twins…” Astrid offers.

You turn your head to see the two Thorstons rolling around in the dirt, forgetting the blanket they’re fighting over.

“I’m up for it if you are.” Snotlout says in his usual flirtatious tone.

“Save it.” You scoff.

“For what, when we’re curled up together under the moonlight?”

You wait a moment for Astrid and Hiccup to wander over to the tree line as they begin to collect sticks for a fire, then you turn on Snotlout.

“I don’t want to ruin this for Hiccup because he’s my friend, Astrid too. They don’t get away much. But, keep this up, and I’ll switch so you’re stuck with Hiccup. Got it?”

“All right, all right. Sheesh, no need to be so harsh.” Snotlout’s face drops and, for a moment, it seems like he might get through the night with a decent level of dignity.

As the twin’s fighting dies down when they’ve forgotten why they were fighting, the group gets a fire started. By the flames, on all sides, you make your beds. Fishlegs smooths out the dirt underneath him and pulls out a little doll resembling Meatlug from seemingly nowhere. Hiccup and Astrid stretch their blanket out, giving each other a respectable amount of space that will dwindle once they’re asleep and unconsciously roll into one another’s arms. The twins are both sitting under their blanket, giggling about something Ruffnut found by the lake not far from here.

All of the group is settling in nicely for the night. Except for you and Snotlout. No matter how you tug at the pelt, seemingly a bear’s now that you’ve been messing with it enough, you can’t arrange in a way that keeps you from touching each other. No matter what, you’re going to be snuggling close if you don’t want your feet to freeze. As the night gets one you settle for facing away from him, your back pressing lightly against his chest. But just as you close your eyes, there’s an annoying noise that wakes you.

“Your teeth are clattering.” You note, quiet enough for only your bedmate to hear.

“I can’t help it, it’s cold.” He argues.

You sigh, pushing a bit more of the pelt to him. It may expose you to the cool air flowing between the ground and the furry cover, but it keeps Snotlout content and quiet. Soon enough you find your shivers overtaking you, making i impossible to sleep.

“If you scoot closer we can fit the pelt over us better.” Snotlout mumbles, half asleep.

“Not even in your wildest dreams.” You tuck your arms in as tight as you can, trying to keep yourself warm.

“It’s not like that. You’re cold, I’m warm, it’s not fair.”

“If you ever bring this up-“

“I just don’t want you to freeze.”

You hesitantly scoot inward, letting your back press solidly against Snotlout’s chest. The blanket falls to the ground again with that extra half inch of slack. You’re able to pull it in just a bit to keep the cold air from sneaking through.

“I think it might be every warmer if I wrapped my arms-“

“Shut up.” You cut him off.

For once, he does shut up at your request. Now, enveloped in warmth, you’re able to peacefully drift off into sleep. A particularly loud crackle from the fire wakes you in the middle of the night. You shut your eyes again to sleep, but an unfamiliar feeling makes you stay awake. Underneath the pelt, Snotlout has his arm loosely draped over your torso. You’ll never admit just how nice it feels.

Ok! I"ll go down the list

1 - Lion - So, the temptation to make him part lionfish is incredible here. There's also the fact that IRL Lionfish are a huge problem in certain parts of the world because they are an invasive species in those areas, as well as incredibly deadly because of their poisonous spines. And considering how deadly Lion and his sons can be... Yeah, I think he's part lionfish. Specifically he has a deep green tail with silver stripes. His spines are black and gold and hold incredibly potent poisons.

2- ??? [REDACTED BY THE ORDER OF THE EMPEROR]]

3- Fulgrim - He is part Coral Beauty Angelfish, and has a beautiful purple tail that fades into a vibrant yellow color. Coral beauties (at least according to the quick google search I did about them) are an incredibly hardy salt water fish, and known for their vibrant colorations.

4 - Perturabo - is part Cabezon - which are known for being Stubborn Bastard Fish who Refuse To Move until they get their next meal, willing to wait days and even weeks before they get their next meal. Which is often other fish, which I feel fits Peter turbo pretty well. He has a pleated tail and fins that are a mottled steel and black color, with the occasional yellow stripe.

5 - Jaghatai - is part Sailfish - which are allegedly one of the fastest fish in the world IRL. He has a bright white tail with red stripes. His fins are also white with red stripes.

6 - Leman - is part Piranha. Not only are Piranhas highly predatory, they also are species of fish that school together. Like how Space Wolves almost always stick together in packs. Also, he still has fangs in this AU. His tail and fins are a lovely slate grey color with an iridescent shine to them.

7 - Rogal - part greenland shark! Cold adapted predator of the sea. Doesn't look like much but is an apex predator in the seas it lives in. He has gorgeous golden fins and tails with black spots.

8 - Konrad - part goblin shark. I didn't pick it just because of the name, but because it is a deep water shark (lives in darkness, just like a certain edgy primarch) that is rarely seen by humans. And. Well. Most humans who saw Konrad didn't exactly live to tell about it, did they? He has a deep blue tail and fins that are surprisingly slender. But powerful and he has a hell of a bite and many, many pointy teeth.

9 - Sanguinius - He has a beautiful silver tail and fin-like wings, as his mer-half is flying fish! Although I was super tempted to make him part-lamprey because of the blood-sucking aspect of him.

10 - Ferrus - as per the suggestions of @angronsjewelbeetle @c-u-c-koo-4-40k and @i-am-a-dragon34 Ferrus is now part Dunkleostous, with dark grey fins and tail on his dorsal side and a silvery ventral side.

11 - ?? [REDACTED BY THE ORDER OF THE EMPEROR]

12 - Angron - part betta fish. He has striking red and gold fins and tail and will square the fuck up if the mood strikes.

13 - Roboute - there is a big temptation to go for the Ultramarlin pun, but I won't give in. What I am going with is part Ribbon Eel, as they have this really lovely blue body with bright yellow dorsal and ventral stripes that go all the way down their bodies. That and G-Man having a long tail to thwap his brothers with makes me giggle.

14 - Mortarion - part pufferfish. Prickly, defensive and poisonous. Can and will puff up. Has grey fins and tail with dark green spots. Spiny.

15 - Magnus: I am torn between making him part carp - because of the Japanese (I think?) myth about a carp jumping up a waterfall in order to become a dragon - which hints at Magnus' incredibly powerful warp abilities or an Abtu, which is a mythical ancient Egyptian fish, because Space Egypt. Thoughts? Opinions?

16 - Horus: Is part dolphin. Known for being very charismatic and charming, but can and will bully other kinds of sea life. Baby-Horus has a deep green tail with gold markings.

17 - Lorgar - I love the Parrot Fish pun suggestion by @c-u-c-koo-4-40k so that is what I am going with. His fins and tail are a deep red color with a silver shimmer to them.

18 - Vulcan - another excellent suggestion by @c-u-c-koo-4-40k for making one of the primarchs part barracuda! I have decided on Vulcan, rather than Magnus. Vulcan’s dorsal fins and tail are a deep green color, the ventral side is black. Along the middle where the two colors meet, he had gold spots.

19 - Corvus: Part of me wants to make Corvus either some kind of shark, or angler fish bc of his whole "sworn vengeance and eternally hunting after Lorgar post-heresy" thing but. Big E is also a being who loves himself some aesthetics and I don't think a part-angler fish boy would fit that. Perhaps part black-tipped shark bc of their stealthiness. Thoughts?

20 - Alpharius and Omegon: are color-pallet changed blue-ring octopi. Instead of a yellow body with bright blue rings, they have vibrant teal tentacles with bright silver ring-patterns across their tentacles and up the fishy parts of their bodies.

The first time I saw one of kiivg's pieces, I had the thought: I've never seen anything like this. Then I did a double-take, because even though I can't pinpoint it, this style strikes me as quintessentially storybook. It should be on the cover of a comic, or it should be a bonus chapter illustration in your favorite novel--both because of the striking style and the amount of STORY King packs into each single standalone piece.

The first of King's works I saw was one that I consider really KING now: oriented so that I had to tilt my head to get the full picture. I find it only pulls me in deeper, looking really closely at every detail before I get the full picture. Here's one of my favorites (give it a reblog!):

SURPRISE this is a fanfic for the Robert Pattinson The Batman film, which I think is a nearly perfect hopepunk movie, and the first Bruce Wayne I've ever seen on film who NEEDS A ROBIN. So here, have a batdad and his kid.

I love an awkward man trying his best to be a parent to a kid who has the same problems he did. Let's parent our inner childs through real children, that's my weakness. Also, Dick gets to be childhood friends with Barbara Gordon, so that's great.

It's "unfinished" but I think it does just fine for what it is, and I hope people enjoy!

Walking around Big Hit's building with a camera following her along with an interviewer from Vogue, Jennie smiled as she heard the next question asked.

'Most interesting nickname you've been named?'

She chuckled at the question. "A Bratz doll,"

'Favorite curse word?'

"I love saying this word. FUCK!"

'What angers you the most?'

"Lately...xenophobia especially regarding K-Pop groups. It irks my soul. I hate it so much,"

'Most expensive thing you've splurged on?'

"I recently got a penthouse in New York," she proudly answered.

'Funniest sibling and why?'

"Vienna. Because she has the best one-liners," Jennie giggled at the memories.

'Favorite thing you have worn?'

"Nike. Everything Nike,"

'Who's another artist you'd work with?'

Opening up the door to her studio, she held it for the interviewer as they walked in.

"Travis Scott. I need that energy. It's lit!"

'Secret hobby?'

"I still learn about wrestling,"

"So many! On the top of my head, Rihanna, Zendaya, Lady Gaga, G-Dragon, and CL!" she excitedly said as she grabbed a few packs of smarties from her dish bowl and began to eat a few pieces.

"Smarties! Duh! They really need to sponsor me. If I can be blessed with Nike, I will work hard to get Smarties to have me endorse them,"

'What's the funniest thing you read about yourself in the press?'

"Recently? That I'm pregnant. I don't understand why everyone keeps saying that. You clearly see me downing alcohol with my friends,"

"You know what? People always assume I'm mean or disrespectful because of my resting bitch face. But once we work together and begin to talk those thoughts go out the window,"

'Who is one of your role models in the K-Pop industry?'

"G-Dragon. I owe so much to that man. He is truly the best and has mentored me for many years. I'm very grateful to him. He's an icon,"

"I've been getting into skydiving, more,"

'Favorite place to visit in the world?'

"Japan. Gosh, I love going over there,"

'Most overworn item in your wardrobe?'

"I wear a specific pair of Nikes that I call my lucky pair if I need that extra push. Right here," she presented the sneakers she was currently wearing.

'Beauty product you don't go a day about wearing?'

"Chapstick! Keep your lips moisturized, please! No crusty lips up in here!"

'Favorite piece of jewelry to wear?'

Jennie smiled proudly and presented her ring to the camera. "My wedding ring,"

'Alright, I have a few Jungkook questions here.'

Her eyes lit up when they mentioned his name and she smiled brightly. "I'm ready!"

'Which of Jungkook's tattoos are your favorite?'

"His tattoos are so nice. I love them all but to pick one? Um...I'd say our couple's tattoo. We have our heartbeats tattooed on each other. On our ring fingers,"

'Favorite thing to wear of Jungkook's?'

"Definitely his hoodies," she couldn't stop smiling as her heart skipped a beat.

With the announcement of S3 coming later this year, I thought I'd just put into the universe my predictions for how TLOVM S3 will work. I've already covered some of this before (see here for how A Bard's Lament has the same number of letters as there are episodes in a season), but now I'm in the mood to go into more detail.

My first thoughts were of what needed to fit into this season, namely, defeating the rest of the Conclave, vestige hunting, and individual character arcs. That's a LOT, but I think I've figured out how it COULD work.

Episodes 1-3 (Marquet / Glintshore)

Raishan has just revealed herself and needs to quickly gain VM's trust. She'll tell them Ripley was helping Umbrasyl with his vestige hunt and that she's gone to Marquet to track more down. This might be a good time for Percy and Keyleth to get some character development since Percy will be interested in taking Ripley out of the picture, and Keyleth will want to embrace R A G E for Raishan's involvement with Thordak destroying Pyrah.

Once they get to Marquet, Scanlan has the opportunity to reunite with Kaylie (since she and the troupe mentioned going there after Westrunn) and kick his character arc into overdrive. Scanlan will make his promise to Kaylie that he'll survive the crisis, and we'll probably get some J'mon Sa Ord and the Sandkehgs Hide scene.

Glintshore, the Anna Ripley fight, and Percy's death will happen in E3. This is simply because episode three has been chock full of depressing character moments for both S1 and S2 - so why shouldn't it also be the case for S3? It will also serve as a catalyst for Vex and Percy's official romance and potentially spook Keyleth and Vax into theirs as well. Scanlan will probably have a moment too, as he realises just how dangerous this quest will be. By the end of this batch, we'll have two (?) more vestiges with Whisper and Cabal's Ruin added to the roster.

Episodes 4-6 (Vorugal / Yenk / The Mansion)

The party will probably make a quick pit-stop in Whitestone where they'll find out the Conclave has expanded its efforts beyond Tal'Dorei, as Vorugal has demolished Draconia in Wildemount. Raishan will convince VM to go to Draconia with her to dispatch Vorugal. We might get more Exandrian lore to set up Wildemount for the M9 series as VM preps for the battle.

Scanlan received a key in the S2 finale that will likely come into play in E5 as either the key to his Magnificent Mansion or the Gate spell (both are iconic parts of the Vorugal plan). I'm leaning more towards the key belonging to the Mansion since they can rewrite the story to have Raishan cast Gate as a nod to how she freed Thordak. They'll summon Yenk so they can not only kill another dragon but also retrieve Keyleth's vestige. We'll get a really badass fight scene and character moments for a number of characters.

Considering how jam-packed the season will have been at this point, I wouldn't be surprised if E6 ends up being a cool-down 'filler' episode with character moments like Kima getting the Holy Avenger, the canon ball contest, and Percy and Vex's kiss in the woods.

Episodes 7-9 (Fire Plane / Earth Ashari (?) / Retaking Emon)

On the hunt for more vestiges, VM will probably head to the Fire Plane to recover the Plate of the Dawnmartyr with a cameo from Senokir. Still, aside from that, I don't know what the episode would consist of.

I also think this batch of episodes is a perfect place to slot in Keyleth's Earth Ashari trial, since it took place pre-stream and TLOVM seems to be hinting that Pyrah was her first trial. It would be really interesting to see how Keyleth's vision of her own death will be adapted considering how far into the Chroma Conclave arc it takes place. The trial would also give VM a chance to gather more forces for the coming battle.

Now, if the episode titles actually ended up spelling A BARD'S LAMENT, I would have absolutely named S3E9 'March to Emon'. This is where we get an Avengers Endgame-type moment of unity where all of VM's allies and the armies gather to take Emon back from Thordak. I'm thinking of appearances from Syngorn, the Ashari, Whitestone, maybe even J'mon Sa Ord sending some support their way.

Episodes 10-12 (Thordak / Raishan / Scanlan & Taryon (?))

We're in the final batch of episodes, and I feel like these are the simplest to lay out. It'll be boss battle after boss battle; the only question is how long each battle will take. Thordak will likely be kept to just E10, so that the show has ample time to handle the Raishan fight (since I tend to think of Raishan as the penultimate enemy from the Conclave).

Thordak dies, and in E11, the party battles Raishan in a brutal fight that does NOT kill Percy in the adaptation. I think him dying again would cheapen his death earlier in the season and take away from Scanlan's death in the same encounter. I really hope we get Travis breaking our hearts with "FIX HIM!" too. Now, I'd say the episode ends with VM taking Scanlan's body back to Whitestone.

In the season finale, Kaylie comes to Whitestone, and the party resurrects Scanlan. I think it'd be a unique change to the story (but not necessarily an unwelcome one) if VM was willing to just bury Scanlan, but Kaylie was the one who convinced them to try and bring him back. We get the absolutely gut-wrenching speech and his departure. The thing I'm wondering is whether TLOVM will simply end with Scanlan leaving and save Taryon's debut to S4, or if they'll introduce him in the final scene and leave us on a cliffhanger. My assumption is that the latter is the case since it's a very them thing to do.

With all that being said, I hope what I've written makes sense. It's been in my drafts for a good 6 months while I tried to piece together my theories, and I haven't exactly proofread it. Obviously, any number of things could end up being different, but this is just my take. I'd love to hear people's thoughts and theories that they've come up with themselves too!
