Game Dev Glossary: Prototype, Vertical Slice, First Playable, MVP, Demo
Someone on our discord brought up a good bit of nuance in response to the Vertical Slice talk - there's a bunch of different terms for things that seem really similar. Each of the terms are the same basic concept - a demonstration of gameplay - but they each have small but important distinctions. Let's go over them here.
Tumblr media
[Vertical Slice] - We just went over this. It's a functioning version of all planned game systems in the game working together for a representative final game experience.
First Playable - Basically the same as a Vertical Slice. Some people have some bigger distinctions between the two, the First Playable is the milestone that marks the end of preproduction and the beginning of production.
Tumblr media
Prototype - A playable example of a single gameplay system to prove out the concept. Examples might be character movement, a combat combo system, or a specific game mechanic. The above screenshot is from the Breath of the Wild systems prototype - wind, fire, etc. was modeled in this prototype before being translated to the 3D game world.
Tumblr media
MVP - Minimum Viable Product. The absolute bare-bones critical path minimum of whatever deliverable we're working on that meets acceptance criteria. This can refer to the whole game or a specific chunk of work we're doing (e.g. a specific system, a feature, etc.).
Demo - A stripped-down build of the game for exhibition, either for executives, tradeshows, or public-facing. Split into pre-release demo and post-release demo, with the post-release demo being easier to deal with.

One thing I've realized, in the wake of the Eshop shutting down, is that nobody bothered to preserve the demos.
I'm not talking about the ones that are just pieces of the main game, if you're pirating you might as well go for the whole thing, but the ones that are very much their own content. Like the Bravely Default demo, where I failed to accomplish anything other than getting poisoned a lot, but definitely had things to do other than fuck around Ancheim and hope you don't die, I just didn't get there.
Or the Bravely Second demo, which I hear was actually sort of a prequel? I'm not actually sure there's any way to confirm that for myself.

My first thoughts on Princess Peach Showtime (based on the Demo)
So I know Super Princess Peach existed but I never played it because I didn't know it existed at the time and I still haven't played it because out of sight out of mind but based on the demo of PPS, I actually have some pretty bulleted thoughts
Complete Sailor Moon transformation. Love it. It's everything.
Stella giving you the ribbon for Sparkle Power is literally "the power of friendship" and I'm here for it.
The Swordfighter Power is SO OP I DONT KNOW HOW IT GOT THROUGH BECAUSE IF YOU AERIAL DODGE YOU INSTAKILL THINGS EVEN MINIBOSSES
Pastry Chef Yodel Mountain Mother.
I saw a Ninja power in the trailer it plays at the end of the demo and hello???? Mother??? She's THAT gworl????
Same as above but there's a MASKED "DESPERADO" BANK ROBBER POWER?????
My final thought for the whole demo session is strictly and purely
Queen.

Best of the Summer Games Hype Train (Part 2: Demos)
I promised I'd talk about the demos I played during the Steam Next Fest last month and I delivered! 7 profiles on cool, new/upcoming games are up on the blog now. Go read!
Another summer is upon us, ushered in for us gamers by oodles of announcements, a slew of sales, and (my personal favorite) the return of the Steam Next Fest! As I mentioned in part 1 of this summer games shenanigan summary, I’ve had a very, very busy June (hence why this post is like 2 weeks late). Still, I did squeeze in some time to speed date some fresh, new demos as I do whenever a Next Fest…

Mac Mania (Classic Mac, various years, collected in 1995/1996/1997)
Mac shareware/freeware/demo discs similar to magazine coverdisks, but sold without magazines. You can download them here, or better yet, run them in Infinite Mac - pick a combination of operating system and, optionally via the Customize button that appears upon mouseover, computer (7.5.3 on Quadra is generally recommended, or 7.5.5 or higher on Power Macintosh 9500 for PPC games/software which will otherwise cause Type -192 errors, but feel free to experiment), then click CD-ROMs at the bottom and, when the emulated Mac has finished starting up, click one of the MacMania discs (under Compilations). Don't worry about filesize - Infinite Mac is clever and downloads parts of the disc on the fly. If you need to change the number of colors, use the colors icon at the lower left to open the colors menu.
Tip: the first disc has the bizarre Mormonoids From the Deep, which uses the ancient WorldBuilder engine and it thus best run on System 7.5.3 on a Mac II (don't worry, it can handle it). It has a shareware system that pretends to be a virus that will random end the game; it can be 'disarmed' by typing 'tx' or 'xt' on the first screen (titled 'OH, NO! IT'S...) and pressing Enter. Also, important commands and be found under the Commands menu. You can also play the game in your browser here with additional sound effects and other early games by the developer, Lamprey Systems (note: collection makes fun of Christianity, and aims to scare normal people, subvert their children and provide solace to the weird).
More tips: If you get a chunk load error, reload the page and try again. Video files will take a while to load, but like all files, will be saved by your browser (and can later be deleted in your browser's settings) so they'll play smoothly afterwards. To get Fawn to show more than a blank white window, follow the instructions in the FAQ (HyperCard is stored in Infinite HD - Multimedia - HyperCard). When done with a disc, just draw it into the Trash to unmount it.

How do I find, an obscure video game demo CD.
All I remember is that on it was:
The demo for Star Wars Episode I : Pod Racing
Star Wars Droidworks
I know that there were other Demos on that CD too, but I don't know the names of said games
I vaguely remember that maybe the Demo for Heroes of Might and Magic III was on the CD as well, but I can't remember if that is true.

Trash is Fun! (Demo) Review (PC)
"Trash is fun. That definitely sounds like a Krissie game…" -My wife
Tumblr media
Trash is fun is a small indie game I had on my steam wish-list for a while, and I decided to try out their demo recently. It's a multiplayer based game where human greed and carelessness has caused a deadly chain reaction - the polar ice caps have been melted by global warming, releasing a virus that caused all humans to turn into zombies! Luckily for several species of critter though, the virus has instead mutated them into being anthropomorphic and possessing human-level intelligence (which they don't seem to mind, thankfully) and just in time too, because if the sick and zombified humans weren't bad enough, piles of trash are also mutating into a monstrous zombie form and coming after our critter heroes! Aye Carumba!
Tumblr media
The game-play takes a very party game-style approach where 1-4 players can work together on a single screen to complete various tasks with the ultimate goal of cleaning up the air pollution by sorting, condensing and disposing of garbage. While doing so, players will also have to fend off attacking zombies using things like turrets and flamethrowers. There's a variety of cute critters you can place as (including a fox, yay!), which each player gets to select at the start of every level.
Tumblr media
The demo is pretty short, but at-least let me get a feel for the game's basics. There's one story mission and 1 zombie mission you can play. The story mission is light on zombies, but tasks you with sorting 4 types of garbage into compactors, and you can then take the compacted bales to the "o2" machine, which I assume either incinerates or recycles it. Also, the machine has a relaxing shark on top, I'm not sure why, but it's cute. :D Oddly, if you finish the story mission, you get an intro for the second mission, but can't actually play it.
Tumblr media
In the demo's zombie mission, the goal is to simply see how long you can last until the zombies take out your 02 machine and kill you. You have a flamethrower, a single turret and barricade to hold them off. Most zombies show up at the barricade, but occasionally ones will parachute in at random locations so you can to run and take them out quickly. The flamethrower seems to have a cool-down time, as if you try to spam it too often some odd sound plays and you have to wait a second. The flamethrower also has a short "ready" animation, so you do have to time things carefully to get a good shot at the zombies around you.
Tumblr media
Some of the game's tutorials are presented through art rather than words, which has a charm to it, and does help with communicating ideas without the need for language translations (It's a Ukrainian game). I played the demo alone, but from what I've read, the game supports local co-op (good!) and the full version on steam lets you do that fancy "Steam Play" thing for online multiplayer, which I don't know much about outside of the time I used it to play a game with my friend Mason.
Tumblr media
Overall, the demo seems promising, and it is DRM Free on both Steam and Itch Io! I have reached out to the dev team on Itch Io to find out if the full version on Steam is also DRM Free, and if so, I would be happy to support this little indie title with a purchase. The full Steam version also comes with an option to purchase the game's soundtrack, and steam game soundtracks are always DRM free mp3s, so that's a plus too! I dig on the game's cute animal characters, the funny name, and the game's positive social message (take care of the environment!). The game's dev team was all teenage kids too, so that's pretty impressive!
Tumblr media
You can get DRM Free demo here on itch.io or here on Steam!

Steam Next Fest 2023: Mini Settlers
Steam Next Fest 2023: Mini Settlers #MiniSettlers #Blaugust2023
Steam is currently running its Steam Strategy Fest and as usual, there are a lot of demos to try out. Reus 2 is having its first public demo, by the way! Go check it out if you’re even vaguely interested! But back to the actual topic: Mini Settlers. I started this demo not expecting much at all. Not because of the simplistic graphics, but because it reminded me of Masterplan Tycoon. A game whose…
