Garden progress
This weekend I added soil to the middle 4x8 bed (I did the front 4x8 bed two weeks ago) and I planted more beets, carrots, radishes, and chard. It’s too early for beans, but I found some old seeds and decided I can either plant them and see what happens or toss them, so I planted a few bush beans in the raised bed and some pole beans in an EarthBox. I had tried winter sowing some sugar snap peas and protecting them with leaf mulch. Most didn’t come up, but two or possibly three did, so I gave each seedling a bamboo stake to grow on and we will see what happens. I worked around them to plant the other things in that bed.
My neighbor gave me some arugula seeds she had saved from her plants last year. I added those to the front bed between the rows I had planted with other things. I also planted some beets and radishes in the grow bag. Maybe I’ll put potatoes in there later, but I don’t have any right now.

Garden Report & Frugal Living 24.04.12
Today we managed to get a bucket of sand from the beach before the weekend rains appear. Also planted in pots some old seeds, really crammed them in thickly because I am so late and not sure if they will even germ . Note to self: harvest dates are important especially if you have a tendency like me to over purchase/horde seeds/trade seeds. And make sure they are sealed well! I spilled a great deal of Peshawar poppies because inner glaceing bag was haphazard and another bag of some sort of bean was in open plastic (is that mold or inoculation?). I planted out the beans thickly in a glow box not wanting to take up space for about 75 bean plants. If they come up it will indeed be a pleasant surprise! and even more if the voracious creatures stay off! So here is what is planted:
Peshawar poppies
calendula
early cabbages (hope they won't bolt)
purple broccoli (hoping for cooler grow season so no bolt)
yellow mangels/beets
pole beans
spring onions
guava seed (saved seeds, idk but I am guessing they may be pineapple guava from fruit we receive every year)
giant prague celeriac (giant celery root)
white pickle cucumber
tiger toms (red paste toms with green stripes)
flat leaf parsely
basil (genovese/sweet style)
I have some black polish radish that is suppose to be sweeter than the spainish variety but those I need to direct sow.
The ants are still in grow box #2. I thought I had gotten them out last year but no such luck. I will need to find some terro boxlettes.
The purple asparagus has quickly sent up a spear. No sign of any others. I collected seeds off of it last year and I really should plant but I'm not sure I can commit to the slowness of it (about 8 weeks to germinate!).
There is so much I want to plant this year but I need a major clean and if I get settlement, there may be enough for roof but the tear off will generate a huge amount of waste and even with tarps down, many things will probably die due to impact and workers' boots so definitely can not do guerrilla gardening along the flower beds and shrubbery.
Currently foraging lilac blossoms. I dry them and place in jars for tea.
The quince is just loaded with blossoms! I have never seen this many flowers! We love quince so hoping for good pollination and much fruit. The red fleshed apple is starting to bloom as is the pears -- yes, the little asian pear may pull through! The raspberries are also starting to bloom. The pots I propagated last year need to find homes or be planted. I need to pull weeds from the white currant transplants. This is the year I need to transplant my little persimmons I grew from seed if they survived. They make a long tap root first so its essential to find a good spot -- no moving them around!!
Once again, too slow on the pruning! The birds are setting up housekeeping. The collared doves once again are trying to nest in the garden. I'm hoping that the neighbors will mellow out. They are becoming more aware of the songbirds that frequent my thicket (there really is a method to my madness... for some things).
Frugal tip: do you knit or crochet? do you want to learn but don't want to commit to a large project? got an old t-shirt? with a pair of cloth scissors, cut your t-shirt into a continuations ribbon about the width of your little finger or half that width. Roll your t-shirt 'ribbon in a ball. From the thrift store or if you have a crafters borrowering library get like maybe number 6-8mm knit needles/ crochet hook. Most craft stores also have economy priced needles/hooks if you want to invest and learn. You can knit/crochet a 'sample' sqare and use it as a wash cloth for your dishes. You can do this trying out new stitches as well with cotton yarns (look in thrift stores, rummage sales and craft discount sales). This way you are learning a new skill, recycling a spent object and hopefully being enthused and having fun. It might even become a hobby!
So my friends, get outside! Grow a garden, get a hobby and grow yourself in the process!

Do You Know The Name Of This Flower? I'm Taking Some Dyslexia Lessons
Do You Know The Name Of This Flower? I’m Taking Some Dyslexia Lessons
I’ve signed up for a course online that helps Dyslexics deal with words, numbers, and the name of things like flowers. That is a tough one for me. I was diagnosed late in life and have not fully taken the time to learn how to cope with my condition. It doesn’t affect my writing, blessedly, or photography, but learning, words, symbols, numbers, etc. I love my new gardening work but am getting…

bruce allowing a reporter to do an article on him and wayne manor. so he shows the reporter around, and shows them the kids bedrooms.
starting with dick's old room, its fairly messy with a lot of photos of his friends and gym equipment. the reporter makes a joke about how most of the photos are redheads. bruce explains how dick stays here a lot so he leaves a lot of his stuff here but doesn't actually live here anymore.
then they go to jason's room where bruce just pretends to be super sad the whole time. emotional moment. the reporter like, gets down on her knees and does a little prayer for jason and jason is just, hiding in the cupboard trying not to laugh because he forgot he wasn't meant to be here today.
then tim's room. where tim is currently playing video games with cassie, bart, and conner. the reporter makes a comment about the bi flag above his bed and tim just stares at her threateningly in case she was about to say something homphobic, the distraction causes tim to die in the game, kon starts to swear as he was teamed up with tim, making bruce threaten to call his dad (kon: which one?) the room is also an absolute tip, and bruce basically just argues with tim about tidying up.
then to duke's room, which he has only just started moving into so its filled with boxes, but it is very overwhelmingly yellow and a little banner on the door that says "y'all need therapy, not me tho. im totally fine." and the door is covered in bee stickers (courtesy of steph, damian, and tim)
then to damian's room, where he is very casually sitting stiffly on his bed with a sword. the reporter is just. very confused. and damian turns his head and tells bruce to kick tim's friends out the house, and bruce is just like, "you're meant to be in school!?" and damian just utters the word "useless" and just carries on staring at his sword until they leave.
they then go to cass' room which has a little flippable picture of her (one side is her smiling, and the other is her with an angry face- basically just telling ppl if she wants them coming in the room- the sign is on the angry face one) and they enter to find her making out with steph. a lot of awkwardness and panic. steph goes on a rant about privacy and disrespect for wlw couples and calls bruce an "entitled, homophobic, billionaire brat." bruce makes them leave the door partially open and cass just rolls her eyes then shuts it fully when they've left.
later on in the tour, they go to the library and jason is just there reading. so jason does an absolutely terrible english accent and pretends to be alfred's grandson, offering them tea and calling them tossers. the reporter somehow buys it tho and they move on.
in the kitchens is duke, kate, and dick arguing about who's actually been kicked out the kitchen as someone threw away the list of ppl with kitchen bans. so now dick is burning stuff in the oven which kate is trying to salvage and its basically that scene in community and they're just full on panicking.

in the living room is luke helping to fix a wheel on barbara's chair. haley (dog) is scratching the sofa while trying to get into a comfy sleeping spot and a very disturbing horror film is playing on the tv super loudly. while bruce and the reporter are in the room, the main character survives and luke and barbara boo the tv repeatedly.
then when the reporter is leaving, alfred is behind them as they go out the front door, holding onto a cow with damian behind him shouting at him for not letting him have the cow inside.
the reporter is just. so so confused. she never goes back to the manor and doesn't submit the report because who would actually believe this is the bruce wayne's daily life??

Garden Report & Frugal Living 23.03.25
Just a quick note:
None of the spinach, carrots nor radish have come up this month. By the look of the bed, I suspect little birds. Following planting by moon failed there so now for another attempt with the garlic (root crop) and try to pay attention to her another batch in when it's not 'favourable'. Pulled a very juicy leek while I was there to ad to soup.
The viking potatoe plants are huge under the hazel hedge. Gathered few seed potatoes the were forced up in one grow bed, tossed them in potato barrel and covered with soil.
I hope to be well enough and the weather fine and I will start/attempt to revive the poor Asian pear ( char/wood ash, alphalfa pellets, glacial dust and nettle and kelp tea). Some of the wood is wick/alive so hoping to pull her through. Saw Paul also hit with spray part of the pomegranate and again at the blackberries.
Frugal living tip: compost or plant in cardboard box (non-waxed). This is another experiment that just might work for you too. This autumn I composted apples, aviary muck and leaves in a cardboard box under a tree. I hope to plant in it this spring. Side note though, I did put it in a large plastic box that had holes in the bottom to drain. I wanted to be see all around to see how this went/see the bottom too. I've done this before with double walled cardboard/ two inserted and it last one season in the land of eternal fog's 'full sun's. Container gardening doesn't have to be fancy pots and mini grow boxes, get creative, just allow enough for root growth and don't use toxic containers.

“[Baseball] breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone.”
