90’s- early 2000’s models as greek goddesses
there’s not much of an introduction to this. but i’ve been thinking about this for a while and want to share! if anyone else sees them differently let me know <3 this was a lot harder than what i thought it would be oh my god.
Hera - Karen Mulder
lately I’ve been seeing hera as a blonde and i have no idea why. anyways, karen is gorgeous and irl barbie. she has exactly the same kind of regality i think hera would and looks like someone who would take no shit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Athena - Yasmeen Ghauri
in my heart of hearts athena is a brunette. yasmeen is gorgeous, has an incredible walk, and i’ve listened to a few interviews of her and she seems so smart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Demeter - Gisele Bündchen
my heart is just <gisele bündchen3. i love her so much, she’s one of my favorite models. she was my first choice when i was making this list and imo she fits demeter’s vibes perfectly. but at the same time, i think her walk fits athena too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aphrodite - Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Lucy Liu or Angeline Jolie
i really like the idea of Aphrodite’s appearance changing person-to person. naomi and angelina are both obvious choices for aphrodite to me. lucy isn’t technically a model (same with angelina) but it felt like a crime to not include her. but my favorite is cindy, her hair alone gives me aphrodite vibes and i’m lowk bitter gen-z doesn’t talk about her as much as we should😭.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Artemis - Shalom Harlow or Bella Hadid
one of my friends mentioned only seeing Artemis with short hair and i’m inclined to agree. at the same time though, i also can’t get the image of bella as Artemis out of my head. (i know she’s not a 90’s nor 2000’s model. but i’ll make an exception on account of i like her).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hestia - Brenda Schad
another underrated model imo. she’s stunning and fits hestia to a T. from what i know about hestia she’s one of the few semi unproblematic figures in greek mythology, and brenda is so sweet and smart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(originally i was going to do just the Olympians but i can’t get these two out of my head)
Persephone - Brandi Quinones
take a shot every time I say underrated. but that’s exactly what brandi is! i hate that she’s only known as the woman shalom Harlow bumped into, she has an amazing career on her own. anyways, she fits persephone perfectly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hecate - Gurmit Kaur
as soon as i saw her ‘season of the witch’ by lana del rey started playing in my head. look at her and tell me that’s NOT hecate? I think the eyeliner definitely adds to it, but even in editorials gurmit fits hecate perfectly.

I actually read that one book that was titled something like "Goddeses of Ancient Greece" that proposed a lot of the Greek Islands had predominantly matriarchal cultures and goddesses, & that the Greek goddesses were powerful & alone (& for a lack of a better term, "feminist") before Mycenean influence where it gave them husbands & made them submissive, & I kept waiting for a section to come up that suggested this was in any way correct, or how they even came to this conclusion & how they knew any of this, but there was none & it never came. I read the book front cover to back looking for footnotes or acknowledgements or sources or any other works they referenced that may have also suggested this, so their entire book's works cited is basically just "trust me, bro"

Herakles Rituals
Taking place as the purifying ritual of Lesser Mysteries. Purifications varied from region in looks, though most took place by a stream in the spring. Many would give offerings to purify, most commonly water or blood. Purification was integral for anyone not born into the cult (Or Greek for that matter). Anyone was welcomed to participate in the Mysteries, but only if they were purified.
Tumblr media
A repeating purification was also done a month before Greater Mysteries, the journey to Eleusis or Athens.
Another large part of Lesser Mysteries was learning the theology of Demeter and Persephone (Kore). Members took the week to learn of Myths and rituals of the Two Goddeses.
Taking the week to purify and learn, many cult members would end their week with a vision from Kore. Preparation was a large portion of Lesser Mysteries.
During the Greater Mysteries initiates were vowed to silence. What we do know is due to remaining artwork and Myths, specifically surrounding initiation of Herakles.
One of Herakles' Twelve Trials was th fide Kerberos, during which he met permite him who and within the Mysteries.
According to Myth, the Lesser Mysteries were created for Herakles. One could not join the Mysteries if stained with Miasma. Herakles had Miasma due to murder. So Lesser Mysteries was created, so it goes.
Tumblr media
In a carving we can see Herakles holding a pig over an eskhara, a chthonic altar. Depicted held by Herakles is also pelanoi, a type of round cake. A priest is seen holding an offering tray. of what might be poppies, and pouring libation.
Poppies were known be money ation to abduction. They related to both Goddess's, though the altar is purely for Persephone.
After offering initiates were told certain myths that were “inappropriate to tell before children" in the eyes of Socrates.
Next we see Herakles sitting upon a rams fleece, known as the ‘fleece of Zeus' which is also related to the Abduction Myth of Persephone, as her mother, Demeter, sat on a similar fleece after her capture. Herakles is also sechoveiled, with ankles.
Herakles is seen his eyes and bạck covered, suggesting blindness. Commonly, historians believe that the darkness was to purify the initiate back to their own suffering and motherliness.
A priestess can be seen holding a liknon, abasket related to Persephone and Demeter as it is used to separate wheat from chaff. The liknon is also seen as a symbol for the Cult of Dionysus, visualizing the soul separating from the body. Though this thought is more Orphic than Eleusisian.
Tumblr media
Water, Fire and Air were also common forms of purification. Water from libations, fire from torches and air from the liknon. Now pure, the initiate may approach the Demeter. This can be seen in the final artwork.
Demeter is seen on a kiste surrounded by the materials for Greater Mysteries, snakes wrapped around her knees. She is touching them softly showing her transcended human anxiety. She does not hold the snake, who represents the Mysteries, to Herakles. She turns and waits for Persephone to approach, showing that the initiation is not complete.
These rituals are shown in a separate artwork than the Initiation of Herakles Urn, meaning these rituals must have been preformed during Lesser Mysteries.
Many also like to celebrate Lesser Mysteries as the returning of Persephone to Kore as she returns to her mother. It is shown, as during this time the weather gets warmer, sprigs of flowers begin to pop up.
Tumblr media
Another large part of Lesser Mysteries was the idea of separation of the body and spirit, and to return oneself to the principles we descended from--"perfect enjoyment of intellectual (spiritual) good"--as sccording to Plato.
This was achieved through purification and rituals to acceptance to the cult.
You can find a Modern Version of Herakles’ Purification here.

So something interesting I learned recently is that the Featherington sisters' names all orginate in greek and roman mythology or history.
Penelope is the most recognized as Queen Penelope from the Odyssey. The queen who waited 10 years for her husband to come home while fending off suitors. A weaver.
Phillipa's is a feminine form for Philip and the name can be traced back to Alexander the Great's father.
Prudence and Felicity are variations of their latins versions, Prudentia and Felicitas. Both were Roman goddeses. Prudentia was basically the physical representation of the virtue. She was the goddess of discipline and often seen with Justitia, the goddess of Justice.
Felicitas was the goddess of basically blesseded luck and happiness. She shared some attributes with Fortuna but was more favored as she didn't bring any of the negatives Fortuna did. Was often on roman coins to symbolize the wealth and prosperity of the empire.
Now I don't think Ms. Quinn meant to do this. Honestly I thought she was just doing names that start with P until little Felicity appeared, but I thought it was neat.

Deadly fall: Macaria
MACARIA
Category: Greek mythology
If you explore the Internet and end up on these Tumblr blogs crazy about Greek mythology or random Top ten articles about Greek goddeses, you might see a name pop up here and there, the name of a death goddess from Greek mythology they don’t teach you about at school or in books: Macaria, the goddess of the happy and peaceful death, daughter of Hades and Persephone. And you’ll wonder “Wow, this goddess seems so cool! Why didn’t I hear of her before?”
… And that’s because she’s not part of Greek mythology. Or rather she MAYBE is part of Greek mythology, or COULD be part of Greek mythology, but… at the same time she isn’t. Let me explain.
The goddess Macaria only appears ONCE in all of the ancient world’s literature, and it is not in any texts from the Antiquity. Macaria appears in the “Suda”, also called the “Souda”, an encyclopedia written in medieval Greek during the 10th century by an author from the Byzantine empire. The Suda was an attempt to make a full and complete encyclopedia of the “ancient Mediterranean world”, which notably includes a lot about Ancient Greek and the Roman empire. Macaria has her own article in this encyclopedia in which she is described as an embodiment of death and the daughter of Hades (she is never described as a daughter of Persephone, that’s people theorizing, she is just Hades’ daughter). She is not actually referred to as a “goddess”, but the article explains she is part of a traditional proverb of Antiquity. You see, Macaria means “blessed” in Greek, and as a result Macaria is the embodiment of the “blessed” death. And according to the Suda, in the ancient world you could say “Go to the blessedness” (aka Go to Macaria) as an euphemism for “death” : similarly, the deads were often called in Ancient Greek “the blessed ones”. The article of the Suda also explains that “Go to the blessedness” could act as a counterpart to another negative proverb: it was a phrase used to say that somebody was going to their death, but it acted as a reverse of “Go to misery” or “Go to utter destruction”. So instead of saying “He’s going to his destruction!” you could say “He is going to his blessedness”. So Macaria was the embodiment of “blessed death”.
But you see… Beyond the Suda, Macaria doesn’t appear ANYWHERE. We have no texts from Ancient Greece mentioning her, neither any texts from Ancient Rome. We have no statue, no art, no temple or sanctuary of her, not even a mention! Many explanations for this sudden “appearance” can be provided. We know that the Suda is a great source of information because it relies on a lot of texts and scholar material that has been lost to time, so maybe Macaria comes from some Ancient Greeks texts that did not survive to this day? On the flipside, we also know the Suda relied heavily on medieval compilations and re-transcriptions of ancient texts – which means, texts that were written or re-edited by Christian authorities with not always a clear understanding of the ancient civilization. So maybe Macaria is a misunderstanding or a reinterpretation of medieval people, and she truly did not exist in Ancient Greece. Everything is possible. After all, there were a lot of “blessed” things related to death in Ancient Greece : most notably one of the “paradise” regions of the underworld was called… the Blessed Islands. Aka, if we reinterpret that a bit freely, Macaria’s Islands. There is a thematic connection there… But again, we have no legend, no art, no mention of her ANYWHERE beyond the Suda.
Now, the name Macaria does exist in Ancient Greece AND was used for a character in Ancient Greek literature… It is technically part of Greek mythology. But this character is not a goddess or an embodiment of death. However, she is closely tied to death (which might explain how her character evolved or was confused for an underworld goddess) – and in here she has a certain tie to Persephone, which might explain why a lot of people think today she is Persephone’s daughter.
This “original” Macaria appears in a tragedy of the great Greek playwriter Euripedes: she is a character of “Heracleidae” (The Children of Heracles), a tragedy that follows, as you guessed it, what happened to Heracles’ children after his death. Macaria, “blessed”, “she who is blessed”, “the blessed one”, is one of the daughters of Heracles. After the hero’s death, his rival and archnemesis, king Eurystheus decides to hunt down his children: Macaria and her siblings flee to the city of Athens, where Heracles had several good friends, and they are welcomed and protected by the king of the city, Demophon. Eurystheus arrives at Athens and asks for the children of Heracles to be given to him: Demophon refuses, and a war starts between Athens and Tiryns (Eurystheus’ city). Now, an oracle is consulted (as always before a war) and the oracle claims that Athens will be victorious… at one condition. That a maiden of noble birth will be sacrificed. It is too much for Demophon, who refuses to kill his own daughter or to put to death the daughter of one of his citizens – and since he doesn’t want to have his city destroyed by the war either, Heracles’ family has no choice but to leave Athens. At this point Macaria steps in and decides she will be the sacrifice. After all, as soon as they leave the walls of Athens, they’ll be captured by Eurystheus who will put them to death. If she has to die anyway, she better wants to die of her own decision, on a sacred altar, to protect her family and Athens, than at the hands of a cruel and vile king.
And so Macaria was sacrificed to Persephone, and Eurystheus was vanquished in battle. The Athenians greatly honored Macaria’s noble death with lavish and grandiose funerals, as she was the savior of the city, and in her honor they named the spring that flowed near the place of her death “the Macarian spring”.
- - - - - -
So... what are the true origins of this mysterious Macaria? Is she really a forgotten Greek goddess as the Internet claims today? Is she just a proverbial personification that the Suda treated as if she was part of ancient Greek folklore and belief? Or is she just a character from Euripides tragedy that slowly evolved into a minor goddess: going from a brave maiden who was sacrificed to Persephone to save a city, from the goddess of peaceful and noble death daughter of Hades? Everything is possible... everything is possible.

sips loudly from my
"if i believed in any gods/goddeses/religion i would totally be worshipping/following persephone"
juice
lmk if you want me to go on another long rant because there is so much to say with persephone in the mythos and just in general of how it applies to today
THAT SHE'S MORE THAN "WOMAN WHO GOT KIDNAPPED AND IS IN BAD RELATIONSHIP" because FOR THE LOVE OF LUCIFER CAN WE STOP. FOR WHATEVER REASON MAKING PERSEPHONE OUT TO BE SOME VICTIM THAT MUST ALWAYS STAY A VICTIM AND CAN'T HAVE AGENCY OF HER OWN.
WE HAVE ENOUGH GREEK GODDESSES AND WOMEN WHO FIT THAT BILL. WHY DO WE NEED TO KEEP VICTIMIZING WOMEN FOR THE SAKE OF "BUT SHE WAS KIDNAPPED" WHEN REALLY IT WAS MORE OF AN ARRANGED MARRIAGE BECAUSE HADES GOT ZEUS'S APPROVAL BEFORE HAND. ARE WE GOING TO IGNORE HOW ZEUS WAS A DICK. AND SAID YEAH SURE DUDE GO TAKE HER. YET HADES IS SOMEHOW THE EVIL PERSON???
like dude if we're going to be upset with anyone be angry at zeus! FOR FUCKS SAKE WHY DO WE NEED TO GO AFTER HADES WHO 90% OF THE TIME JUST MINDS HIS OWN DAMN BUISINESS IN THE UNDERWORLD

Life and death are all within a grasp
Tumblr media
Persephone, also known as Kore, Goddess of spring, flowers, and vegetation. Queen of the underworld.
I gave her less armor-like clothing (yeah those are jorts do you think the Greeks wore shorts? No, and I do what I want). I wanted her to have more flowing yet light spring type sort of clothes, but darker because queen of the underworld. I drew wheat because vegetation and spring, but also space because uh... it’s all I can draw.
