Growing in an abandoned front garden was Pentaglottis sempervirens (green alkanet, evergreen bugloss). This herbaceous plant was introduced into Britain over 300 years ago as an ornamental plant. It has naturalised in the south of England in shady hedgerows and on roadside verges. A vigorous plant with a tendency to spread.

March end of month post 1 of 3: Ten of my favourite plant and fungi photos I took in March 2024

Not quite the end of the month yet I know but as my March end of month posts are coming in three parts and I put them together on Thursday I thought I'd post one each night today, tomorrow and Sunday; tomorrow night at a similar time the post on ten of my favourite landscape and sky photos I took this month shall post and on Sunday ten of my favourite wildlife photos I took this month.

The photos in this set are of; daffodils and hyacinth at Lakeside Country Park, scarlet elf cup and jelly ear at Testwood Lakes, yellow fieldcap at Portland Bill, snake's-head fritillaries at Lakeside Country Park a sensation of my month as it often is in March, daffodil in Romsey, periwinkle in Winchester, wood anemone at Lakeside and common whitlowgrass at Denny Wood in the New Forest.

What a joy it has been to watch many more colourful floral delights emerge in March, many of them early in the theme of the year. Red and white deadnettle, speedwell, seas of lesser celandine, green alkanet, snowflakes, opposite-leaved golden saxifrage, herb-Robert, gorse, bluebells, primroses, ivy-leaved toadflax, cowslips, violet, daisies and dandelions have been other highlights as spring firmly took its grip. It's interesting that this is my fourth spring of really being into flowers and looking to identify all I've seen etc and whilst I'm so much more used to the species now there's always something to learn and I've seen some new ones this month which stood out so it always feels good. Turkey tail was another mushroom I saw a bit of this month as it was pleasant to encounter a few about.

Second part: Fairytale 🐈‍⬛

The glimmering white snow was quietly falling down in the town and so was the color of this dull indoors where life and death could become no stranger to each other at anytime.

…White walls and the faint smells of antiseptic, not much signs of liveliness can be sensed around here at this time except for the soldiers in green who were strenuously moving here and there to carry out the duty of their own. 

However, amidst this seemingly colorless environment, there was a figure of someone half sitting and half lying on a couch. His silky smooth and a bit wavy hair was vivid like a dye derived from alkanet roots with a few locks sloppily falling over one side of his face. While keeping himself up close in the range of the warmth from heater just like a cat snuggling around the fireplace in midwinter, the man with a messy ponytail lazily peered through his shades to observe the achromatic scenery outside of a window.

...Time sure flies, because this year too, is going to pass by in the wink of an eye.

But since no story really had an end, the ‘Happy Ever After’ soon turned invalid —It was just something new that was going to take place.

The “journey” had already set off.

And with the fact that nothing just happened without a cause, the reason why something became the way it was until today was might as well being parts of his fault. So, at very least he made his ever fickle mind to do something about it sooner or later.

Slowly breathing in and out as he mentally counting the ticks of the clock for some way to kill time, he was certain that with this much chill of the night, his breath would gonna turn into a white fog if he was still out there wandering with no direction to go on the street. In fact, he did think the snow looked somehow fascinating but the cold was nowhere near appealing to him.

—That was what he idly thought until a hoard of spirited and mischievous little creatures gathered around him and started wrecking some noises.

“What’s up kiddies~? Do you have anything to do with this poor nii-san at this late?”

A few books were shoved right in front of him with pairs of several pleading eyes.

Oh, great. He caught a glimpse of their caretaker standing not far away from them with a quite worn-out look and a pair of thick bags under her eyes. Ho~ Not even those trained souls can keep up with the energy of these young buds?

“Hmm~ Reading you guys some books before bedtime? Ya know, if this wasn’t this late, I thought there were a heap lot of people who enjoy doing this better than me.”

Actually, this place usually had some regular visitors such as the writer friend of his who always dress like an actor from some period drama, or even that clown prick who seemed to be so good at handling children, and lately there was one tall lady with a proud look that she could seduce anyone in her gaze. However, this time was unfortunately a holiday night, so that was the main reason why there was no one around at the present.

“Alrighty~ Let me see which kind of stories you want this nii-san to read~”

Taking a glimpse of the cover on each book and he somehow had a sudden urge to turn them away.

…‘Snow White’ and ‘Sleeping Princess’, weren’t they? 

What kind of thoughts filled in the heads of those authors when they decided to publish these kinds of stories for children? Especially when the stories featured their heroines to be just a damsel in distress who only waited for their princes to come rescue them or when the moral of stories became to be just ‘a kiss from true love’ can solve anything blah blah blah —Hello? Hey, do they even know that the crippled fantasy of theirs can shape up what children will think in the future?

But still, despite his subtle protest, the kids wouldn’t give up on their choices. They firmly insisted that they wanted to listen to some ‘heartwarming’ stories before bed so that they could have a good dream on the last night of this year.

…Dammit. And you little kids just ask a shameless player who had sworn to love no one like him for an unbelievable lovey-dovey tale? Talking about irony, yet he didn’t have the nerve to turn down their innocent plea.

At that moment, one idea popped up in his mind. If there was no favorable choice available then you had to create a new one, wasn’t it?

“Well then, how about nii-san telling you a story that you guys might never know before?”

After setting a bait on the hook, the big bad cat revealed a wide grin as he saw the school of fish easily falling into his trap.

“Shh...This story may neither have princes nor princesses to entertain you guys, but it’s not like angels and fairies doesn’t exist. Because believe me… Even something that is unable to be seen or even touched doesn’t mean it never exists.”

—And here we go, the fairytale as pure as white as snow, something that seemed too far innocent to be told by him started pouring out.

“...Once upon a time as the winter’s snow had fallen on the town, an unlikely encounter was somehow bound to take place.”

24/03/2024-Lakeside Country Park and boat trip along the Beaulieu River with Wild New Forest on this beautiful evening

Photos taken in this set are of; my first Speckled Wood of the year and wood anemone at Lakeside my joint earliest ever sighting of a Speckled Wood in a year the third time I've first seen one in a year on this date, view and Cormorant from the boat trip, lesser celandine and green alkanet on the walk at Lakeside and Mute Swan at Bucklers Hard where the boat sailed from and another view from it. Peregrines gently kissed by the gorgeous evening sunlight, Buzzards, Marsh Harrier, Avocets, Shelducks, Brent Geese, Egyptian Geese, Mediterranean Gull, Oystercatcher, Turnstone, Mediterranean Gull and seal were other highlights on the boat trip which once again was a wonderful way to spend time seeing wildlife in a unique way, learning a lot and spending time with great people. Blackcap, Dunnock, Blue Tit, House Sparrow, Moorhen including seen on a nest and bringing in vegetation to build it, Great Crested Grebe, bee, my first ever opposite-leaved golden saxifrage, snowflakes, bluebells and hyacinth were also good to see at Lakeside with a bat seen out the front as I admired the full worm moon tonight. A fantastic and packed wild weekend in the New Forest and at home.

This is an Amsinckia, or fiddleneck, that we found in Eastern Washington State. Amsinckia is an interesting genus in the borage family, Boraginaceae, that forms helicoid cymes rather than scorpioid cymes (which are common in Boraginaceae). Different Amsinckia species tend to co-occur and hybridize, so it can be difficult to distinguish them (and that's why we're leaving this one, which we didn't key out, as just "Amsinckia species!"). When we had to key Amsinckia out to grade class assignments in Systematic Botany, we cursed this genus!

These are quite bristly and uncomfortable to handle, and also, like other genera in the borage family like Pentaglottis (green alkanet) and Symphytum (comfrey), tend to contain high levels of alkaloids.

Ok sooooo… I’ve seen a few of my mutuals doing this tag meme, I was tagged by @belovedrooster @bougainvillea-and-saltwater asked me to tag her in mine when I got around to doing it, so here it is!

It’s not in the same layout as the others that have been done, but that’s because I am the least tech savvy person in the world, so you’re all going to have to make do with it like this 😆

The ones I’ve seen so far have been their main OC and the character they are shipped with, so I’m going to do the same ☺️

Jaina’s colour, flower and scent are all the same, that being Lavender, this is both my opinion and her canon too, she loves using lavender scented soap and using it in tea, she even tucks a sprig of it in her hair

Her animal is a black wolf. And her feeling is compassion.

I’m putting the song last because it is a joint song for both of them ☺️

Ulfric’s animal is obviously going to be a grizzly bear! I also head canon him as having a scent that had a hint of leather to it, there is a lot of leather on his armour so I just imagine him having that sort of smell.

His flower is Green Alkanet, which I also think is a perfect shade of blue for him too! And his feeling is confidence

Went for a walk in the park today and the air was thick with dandelion fluff. Saw some pink bluebells, the Spanish variety, and all manner of other flowers, though flourishing most of all were these umbels of cow parsley, anywhere between a foot tall to a metre in height (where only two months ago the meadowgrass had been centimetres). I was reminded of Tolkien's hemlock (the leaves were long, the grass was green / the hemlock umbels tall and fair); I imagine they would look quite similar, if entirely intraversible to anything that is not a bug or similarly many-legged. Still, it was all more visually appealing than I thought it would be; the stems, at least on cow parsley, are twiggy instead of bristled, and the white petals are especially bright in dim tree-shade.

What usually takes me five minutes to walk took me half an hour in admiration of similar sights. This I blame entirely on iNaturalist, because in addition to being an enormously helpful app that automatically geolocates you, it offers machine-learned suggestions when you take photos of plants, so I took a great many photos of a path I have walked a hundred times before. What was previously a humble oak became Quercus rober, the pendunculate oak; a shrub with pretty blue flowers but an otherwise unfettered and weed-like distribution was identified as the Green Alkanet, a type of forget-me-not which grows well in the damp shade at the base of trees (and is indeed a weed, in these parts).
