What has leaves like a maple, flowers like a hydrangea, and fruit like a cranberry? The answer to this botanical riddle is the Guelder Rose ( Viburnum opulus). The Guelder Rose is found in hedgerows and ancient woodlands in Europe, Central Asia, and Northern Africa. The plant is a popular ornamental that has spread to North America, and English name comes from a popular cultivar with snowball like flowers from Holland. The vivid berries look delicious but are mildly toxic and have an unpleasant acidic taste, so they’re best left on the tree as late autumn food for wild birds. My Dad is very proud of his Guelder Rose hedge since it provides attractive colour at all seasons. Around 15 years ago, he collected Guelder Rose berries from a tree growing in the wild near the village of Kelmscott, the home of the Victorian artist and designer William Morris. He planted the seeds in trays and left them overwinter, a standard treatment for stimulating tree seeds to naturally germinate. After 2 years, no sprouts had appeared and my Dad dumped the trays into the compost heap. To his amazement, there were healthy roots growing out of the withered berries! He potted them up and in a few more years they had grown into fine young bushes ready to plant in the field.

Quote
Margaret’s and her son’s refuge after the Lancastrian defeat at Northampton was Scotland, where she got a sympathetic hearing from the recently widowed queen, Mary of Guelders, who was acting as regent for her young son James III. Contrary to widely accepted accounts, this is where Margaret was residing at the time of the battle of Wakefield, fought on 30 December 1460. The dramatic scenes presented by Shakespeare and repeated, time and again, in what can only be described as fictitious reconstructions of events, have no historical accuracy whatever.

Day 2 of Go_a facts until their Edinburgh concert
Kalyna was the band's first single after the Russian Invasion of Ukraine. The song is named after a bush native to the region, the Guelder Rose, which is believed to be an auspicious, luck bringing plant which only grows near virtuous people.
The song is also objectively their best.

Plant of the Day
Sunday 18 December 2022
The berries of Viburnum opulus 'Xanthocarpum' (yellow-fruited guelder rose) are translucent yellow rather than the usual red of the species. This deciduous native shrub has leaves which turn yellow or pale pink in the autumn but the berries persist into winter.
