Luke’s biggest character flaw isn’t impatience or arrogance… it’s reckless optimism.
Like, Luke doesn’t actually think he can beat Darth Fucking Vader in a fight. He wants to get revenge, yeah, but he doesn’t think he’s a better fighter than Darth Vader, he thinks he’s luckier than Darth Vader.
Luke isn’t actually suicidal, despite how little effort you’d have to put in to provide evidence that he could be. He thinks, no, he knows he’s lucky. He’s used to being lucky, even. His survival tactics all sort of depend on Luke being the luckiest person in the room at any given time.
And he isn’t actually all that lucky, that’s pretty obvious, but he really just thinks “If I stay alive long enough, things will eventually just work out.” Like he believes in the Force before he even knows about the Force, almost. Some thingd are just supposed to happen, and his own continued existence as a free man is one of those things, so if he waits long enough, an opportunity will eventually show itself and all Luke has to do is grab it.
He is stupidly optimistic about his chances. But, he’s also not wrong? Like, he doesn’t win his fight against Vader, but he’s also one of the only people who have fought Vader twice and not died either time. He went and rescued Leia without a plan beyond “rescue Leia” and he made it out relatively unscathed. He got captured by a wampa and hypothermia, one right after the other, and he only has to spend a bit of time floating in space jell-o that isn’t quite set. He goes to Dagobah and gets the training he requests from Yoda, despite Yoda not wanting to train him. He rescues Han from Jabba the Hutt, and he doesn’t get fed to a sarlacc in the process.
But really, just look at his final fight with Vader. Luke just honestly believes that everything will be fine. He really thinks he can just ask his dad to please chill out and Vader will. Luke tells the literal actual Emperor of the entire fucking galaxy “No. I will not become evil. And I won’t be evil because I’m not actually angry at anyone.” Luke is the luckiest man alive, because he is still somehow alive.
Heir to the Empire really has him thinking “If I stay alive long enough, an opportunity will present itself” on the planet Myrkr. As in, the planet covered in ysalamiri that cut him off entirely from the Force. As in, Luke doesn’t feel the Force telling him to be patient because it’ll all work out. Luke just believes that.
And it only really hit me as I read that novel. Luke is aggressively, stupidly, recklessly optimistic at all times about his chances of survival. Like, he is one meta joke away from just being actively aware that he is a protagonist and therefore can’t die in the middle of a plot. He’s optimistic about his own life, his dad’s life, his sister’s life, his droid’s life; Luke is the most optimistic man alive.
He is not the most cheerful person. There’s a difference between optimism and happiness, and Luke is a character who is constantly doubting himself, but he also just fully believes in his own ability to stay alive. Like he thinks “As long as I’m in mostly one piece, that’s a success :)” He thinks “wow I’m a terrible Jedi. I don’t know what a Jedi is, but I’m pretty sure I suck at it,” while at the same time being the character who believes in and listens to the Force more than Qui-Gon Jinn.
All this to say, I really hope that one day I can be as optimistic as Luke Skywalker. That man felled a galactic Empire with enthusiastic optimism and familial love alone, I wanna be like that.

With the premiere of Ahsoka right around the corner, it occurred to me that it makes enormous sense for Luke to appear in the series or be a secondary recurring character, and if he isn’t, there needs to be a good explanation given.
In-universe, everything we’ve seen in the marketing indicates that Luke would be involved in what’s going on. 1) there’s a pair of Dark Jedi and a surviving Inquisitor on the loose. It would make sense for Luke to be involved in trying to redeem or at least stop these guys.
2) Ashoka’s mission is apparently directly tied into finding Ezra Bridger. As such, him being focused on rebuilding the Order isn’t a justified reason to steer clear; finding a Jedi Apprentice who’s training was never really completed and could be finished in a few months at most would be a tremendous step towards Luke’s goals, and it would gain him someone to help him rebuild.
3) Ahsoka is clearly working to find and stop Thrawn from returning and reunifying the Imperial Remnants. Luke never faced Thrawn in this continuity, but he has faced dangerous non-Force sensitive Imperials (Sgt Kreel, Commander Zahra) and has served with people who did face Thrawn (Wedge, Hobbie, Hera), and Leia was highly enough placed in the Rebellion to have been aware of Thrawn at least peripherally, so Luke should have heard about him from them. He would be aware of the threat someone like Thrawn would pose, and unless he’s gotten a full academy of Jedi recruits to train and protect since Grogu left, he’s not going to just sit alone on Ossus and do nothing.
4) Ahsoka seems to be investigating Jedi or Jedi connected relics, ruins, and knowledge. Such discoveries would be invaluable in the effort to rebuild the Jedi Order.
5) We don’t know what Luke was up to before Grogu reached out to him besides finding Jedi texts and relics to help rebuild the order and increase his own knowledge and abilities. Unless he found another apprentice who can’t safely leave his side and isn’t ready to face Dark Jedi or Thrawn, he’s probably resumed that endeavor. If that’s so, finding Jedi texts can be postponed until the Heir to the Empire has been dealt with.
Like, if Ahsoka is reluctant to involve Luke because she decides that he needs to focus on the order, or they both sense that he is needed elsewhere, or they agree that he should be with Leia trying to get the Senate to pull their heads out of their asses to prepare for Thrawn, or something along those lines, that’s all we really need. If Luke doesn’t play a role or if his absence is not explained, that really leaves a big plot hole.

Writing a fic where the main changes are that Obi-Wan and Cody and Luke all moved to Alderaan with Bail and Breha and Leia after the war, and Vader never destroyed Alderaan. So post-Empire, Alderaan opens the first temple the galaxy has had in over 25 years and five years later Luke and Leia are going over the semester’s teachers they have to put into rotation (with Cody and Ghost Ben living with them at the temple because Breha and Bail can’t stand the twins being alone (either sets of twins, they have two sets, one of which is Obi/Cody war babies who were born nearly a year before Luke and Leia, and they’re off with Uncle Rex and Auntie Soka to see the rest of aunties and uncles rn) when Luke suddenly starts getting sick. Like throwing up all the time sick.
Well, Leia and Ben take one look at him and go ‘oh he’s pregnant’ and so they make him take a pregnancy test and Luke is so sad about it that Leia giggles and takes one in commiseration too, only to come out of the bathroom with her own positive test and it’s. So. Funny.
Also like ten minutes later Din gets there to pick up Grogu for hometime (baby is coming with him to Nevarro for a month at least they deserve to still have their house maybe a couple months out of the year Grogu solidly lives there with Din and they visit the rest of the year because they can holocomm into classes okay Grogu deserves both a home and schooling lmao) when he asks why Luke looks like shit (Ben gave him Stewjoni pregnancy tea and it’s the first time he hasn’t been clutching his stomach praying to keep something down all day so that’s saying something) and Luke is all ‘I’m pregnant’ and Din’s FIRST fucking reaction is ‘it’s not mine’ shfkeiejordjdonr ‘okay???? I have a wife it’s hers’ ‘oh thank god’ ‘why did you feel the need to tell me it wasn’t yours????’ ‘I have had some weird interactions in the galaxy and it’s really weird cause I don’t have a sperm making part’ ‘…you’re trans??’ ‘Yes.’ ‘…so am I.’ ‘…huh. I sorta just assumed you were Stewjoni like that ghost that follows you around…’ ‘…my relation to him is through adoption.’ ‘Oh. Well. It’s not mine. Congratulations on the new tumor.’ ‘Thanks’
And through this interactions they are now the bestest BFFs ever.

The Return of Thrawn… and C’baoth?
Story hypothesis of how The Bad Batch season 3 could re-canonize Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire
(Spoiler warning for The Bad Batch season 2, and The Mandalorian season 3)
Before the Ahsoka show came out, I figured I would read the Thrawn books to prep for the show. Even though the first several books were de-canonized after Disney bought the franchise, I feel that Dave Filoni has tried to be respectful to Timothy Zahn’s original character of Thrawn and his story. I feel like it could still be possible to bring back a lot from the original book, Heir to the Empire.
First off, I want to just point out that the events in Ahsoka do not necessarily have to replace the original story. In Heir to the Empire, we are not given the “how” of Thrawn’s return. In fact, he was a mysterious warlord that the original saga heroes didn’t know existed until he just suddenly showed up. The first season of Ahsoka could just be the bridge between Rebels and Heir to the Empire to explain this return.
Even though there are some things in the new canon that has changed, I do think there are other things that could still be revived through the final season of The Bad Batch. Anyone else who has read Heir to the Empire may have thought about this too, but I just wanted to share my hypothesis.
Mount Tantiss, and the Guardian
In Heir to the Empire, Thrawn travels to Wayland—where Mount Tantiss is located. While there, Thrawn seeks the Guardian and wants him to take him to the emperor’s storehouse inside the mountain. He encounters a strange, old man who says he could lead him to the Guardian. The old man takes him to the crypt of the Guardian and proudly proclaims that he killed the Guardian.
Mount Tantiss is the secret cloning laboratory of the new empire in The Bad Batch—the one where Omaga and Crosshair are being held. I suspect that “the Guardian” of Mount Tantiss is Dr. Royce Hemlock.
As the story continues, the man claims to be the jedi master Joruus C’baoth. He actuality turns out to be a clone of the dark jedi Jorus C’baoth, who disappeared before the Clone Wars. In Ahsoka, perhaps Baylan Skoll could have been the “replacement” dark jedi for the new canon. However, I feel like they could still bring C’baoth back.
Force cloning
I hypostasize that in The Bad Batch the secret project that Hemlock wants Nala Se to work on is the cloning of the dark jedi—but not just the cloning of the man, himself, but also the cloning of the ability to wield the force.
I know some people suspect that Omega is an experiment of this kind of force cloning. Perhaps she is. I actually suspect that all the original members of the Bad Batch might be as well. Perhaps the attempt to clone force sensitivity is what gave each of them their special enhancements. However, the difference is that they cannot wield the force. Force wielding is what Hemlock wants Nala Se to clone, and it actually does work. The clone of C’baoth can wield the force.
That brings to question: if force cloning is possible, why does Moff Gideon have trouble with it? In The Mandalorian season 3, he admits that this is why he needed blood from Grogu—because he needed a force sensitive subject to clone force sensitivity. But why doesn’t it work for him? It is well after The Bad Batch, so why did he not have the knowledge to complete it? I suspect that the knowledge was lost when Mount Tantiss fell, and that is something that The Bad Batch may just explain.
The Clone Rebellion and the Fall of Mount Tantiss
There is no question that at the end of The Bad Batch, there will be a final battle at Mount Tantiss to free Omega, Crosshair, and all of their clone brothers.
Before reading the Thawn books, I suspected that during this inevitable infiltration the Zillo beast would play a big part and possibly be the downfall of Hemlock. However, my hypothesis changed when I read Heir to the Empire and clone C’baoth claimed to have killed the emperor’s guardian. I do think the Zillo beast will still play a big role in the fall of Mount Tantiss, but it will not be the one to end Hemlock. C'baoth will be. It would be poetic irony: the project that Hemlock obsessed so much over would ultimately bring his demise.
Mount Tantiss has returned from de-canonization, so it is possible that the Guardian, force cloning, and C’baoth may all be brought back as well. They could all be revived in the final season of The Bad Batch, paving the way for the Heir to the Empire movie. Perhaps not everything in the original canon has been lost. On the other hand, perhaps Dave Filoni and the creators are planning to actually take it all in a different direction, but I can see how they could still bring back the original canon if they want. But that is just my hypothesis. If anything, I hope you enjoyed my nerdy ramble.

Everybody on this website is talking about the space whales in the Mabdalorian, but nobody is talking about the recanonization of Mt Tantiss in Bad Batch?? I know not everybody on this website has read the work of art that is Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Empire/Original Thrawn trilogy but hooooooooo boy. Like, we all knew the space whales were coming (eventually) because the rest of the world needs to have preparation for Thrawn and Ezra's reintroduction. But not a thing on this planet could have prepared me to hear about Tantiss and cloning in any canon capacity ever again. God I hope we get to meet Jorus C'Baoth.
