John Waterhouse, Circe Offering the Cup to Odysseus, 1884, Oldham Gallery, Oldham, UK.
When I think of depictions of witches, I think of a medium that predates popular media like television. I think of witches depicted in art. The painting above, painted by one of my favorite artists, John Waterhouse, depicts Circe(from The Odyssey) offering a chalice to Odysseus that she has enchanted. What Waterhouse has painted so well is the power she possesses innately in herself, so while Circe is not a queen, she has the power of one through her ability to do magic. The flowers around her being purple serve to advance that point.
In the mirror behind Circe, we can see Odysseus warily approaching. This perspective shows how Circe is attempting to bring Odysseus under her spell.
In 1884, this painting would have been a different depiction of witches than most depicted by the media. At that point, society had shifted to a more stereotypical depiction stemming from the Salem Witch Trials. However, Waterhouse depicting Circe as more of an Ancient Greek queen serves to convey the long history of witchcraft in the media.

Is the assumption that those accused of witchcraft were usually wise women actually just #folklore? During my research for THE MERMAID AND THE BEAR, I discovered that a mere 9 of the 3837 ‘witches’ in #Scotland were midwives, and only 141 had some mention of healing in their cases. 13th July 1527, birth of Anglo-Welsh Enochian magician, alchemist, occult philosopher and astrologer Dr John Dee, court astronomer and advisor to Queen Elizabeth I. As owner of one of the largest libraries in England at that time, Dee amassed a wealth of knowledge upon alchemy, sorcery, Hermetic philosophy and astrology; and attempting to communicate and summon angels with what he believed to be the universal occult language of Enochian. In 1564, Dee wrote ‘Monas Hieroglyphica’, detailing his view of a cosmic harmony, alongside detailing his use of astrological and alchemical symbols. For these activities Dee was arrested multiple times, but managed to evade prosecution, the first being in 1555, for "calculating", and then treason for his horoscopes of Queen Mary, and her half sister Princess Elizabeth. Later he would serve as Elizabeth’s court astronomer and advisor, advising the creation of a "British Empire", a term coined by him. In his youth Dee had been a student of Dutch physician, mathematician, cartographer, philosopher, and instrument maker Gemma Frisius. Another of Frisius’ students was the founder of modern human anatomy Andreas Vesalius, author of De humani corporis fabrica (On the Fabric of the Human Body), published in 1543. On the same day in 1579 (13th July), John Dee’s eldest son physician and alchemist Arthur Dee was born, who served as physician to both Tsar Michael I of Russia and to King Charles I of England. In 1629, Arthur Dee wrote ‘Fasciculus Chemicus’, a collection of writings upon alchemy and its application. The work was translated from Latin into English by Elias Ashmole in 1650, sparking a reemergence of alchemy and esoteric interest. My sister suggested that I bring a Kitchen Witch into my home to help ward off negative spirits and bring in the good spirits and encourage productivity. I found Hermione, and put her in my kitchen. Thus, Kitchen Witch! According to Wikipedia (always the least accurate and most utilized of information on the internet), the following is a short history of a Kitchen Witch: « There is some debate over the exact country in which the kitchen witch originated, some claiming Norway and others Germany,[4] but consensus points to it stemming from older European customs. The poppet is supposed to depict a "good"[5] witch who inspires productivity and safety in a kitchen, but also counteracts any ill-will directed to the home.[6] It is considered good luck to give a kitchen witch to a friend or family member. So that those unfamiliar with the kitchen witch can understand its meaning, sometimes a note will be hung around the witch's neck[7] stating something similar to: "The Legendary Secret of Goof-Proof Cooking: The Famous Kitchen Witch For centuries, Norwegians have hung this good witch in their kitchen. They believe she has the power to keep roasts from burning, pots from boiling over, and sauces from spilling." » Thanks, Bren! She is helping a lot! :) #kitchenwitch #hermionegranger #harrypotter #norwegian #history #goodluck #harrypotterpop #popvinyl #historyofwitchcraft #witch #positiveenergy #positivityquotes #wikipedia #mysister #kalidesautelsreads #readersofinstagram #readersofig #potterhead #geeky #geekgirl (at Vancouver, British Columbia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDFEka_lYi-/?igshid=1xg6hi4pebu4p

“𝖄𝖔𝖚 𝖍𝖆𝖛𝖊 𝖜𝖎𝖙𝖈𝖍𝖈𝖗𝖆𝖋𝖙 𝖎𝖓 𝖞𝖔𝖚𝖗 𝖑𝖎𝖕𝖘..." - William Shakespeare 🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷 Over the coming days, I will be diving deep into the legacy and lore of the witch, and though she (or, albeit less frequently, he) is a familiar figure, it is important to begin with a definition of the witch. The noun 'witch' is derived from Old English - from the words 'wicca' and 'wicce', which denote male and female practitioners of Wicca, or witchcraft, respectively. From this word, we get 'wicked', as in 'wicked witch'... The Oxford English Dictionary claims that the term 'witch' is "of obscure origin," whereas *Grimms' Deutsches Wörterbuch finds roots in the Gothic language (of the Goth tribes, which I will cover more thoroughly on here one day...). Associations are made to German words translating as 'sacred', 'to separate', 'to curve' and 'to move' - all of which relate to ritualistic behaviour and the practice of cleromancy. In modern English, 'witch' has 4 accepted definitions... which are a little contradictory. There is the malevolent magical woman replete with broom and hat - witch as stereotype. There is the bitter, old hag - witch as insult. There is the beguiling beauty - witch as cautionary. There is the gender nonspecific practitioner of Wicca - witch as religious figure. And, I think, following a simultaneous resurgence in popularity and reclamation as feminist icon - witch as political statement. 🤔: Which definition best relates to your own understanding of 'witch'? Which witch would you like to see given some Generally Gothic attention this month? *Yes, the Brothers Grimm of fairy tale fame! 📸: 'Dance of the Witch (The Night of Ivan Kupala)', by Isaac Levitan, in 'Moscow' Journal, No. 25, 1882. 19th September 1692, Salem resident Giles Cory refuses to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty being accused of being a Wizard, after his wife was accused of Witchcraft. Due to the proceeding of the law in 17th century New England, without a plea the Witchcraft court of Oyer and Terminer could not proceed with a trial, and the action was taken to proceed with ‘Peine Forte Et Dure’ or pressing under stones to force a plea; the only time this form of turture was ever used in American history. After two days of rocks and boulders being piled up on top of boards which covered the naked 80 year old Giles Corey, he finally died, all the time refusing to plead. His last words were recorded as either “More rocks.” orr, "Damn you. I curse you and Salem!" Three days later, his wife Martha Cory alongside Margaret Scott, Mary Easty, Alice Parker, Ann Pudeator, Willmott Redd, Samuel Wardwell, and Mary Parker are hanged upon the charges of Witchcraft. The last people to be executed during the Salem Witch Trials. As well as the ghosts of those executed recorded as being seen after their death, such as the ghost of Mary Easty who proclaimed their innocence to Mary Herrick of Wenham, MA on the 22nd of September, the same day the last victims of the trials were executed; some Salem legends also proclaim the sightings as a curse. One legend states that Giles Corey’s ghost is seen before a disaster is about to strike Salem. His ghost was reputedly seen the night before the ‘Great Fire’ of 1914, in which large areas of the city were destroyed. The position of Sheriff of Essex County, also was said to have been cursed, due to the involvement of (continued in the comments). #darkillustration #darkillustrations #witchcrafthistory #witchhistory #17thcentury #17thcenturyart #superstitions #folklore #strangehistory #witchtrials #witchfindergeneral #witchartist #morbidhistory #witchtrials1692 #historyofwitchcraft #witchpersecution #salemmassachusetts #salemwitch #salemwitchtrials #witchcraft #witchcrafttrials #historyofwitches #newenglandhistory #newenglandwitch #newenglandwitches #colonialnewengland #witchesofnewengland #newengland #witchcraftaesthetic #16thcenturyhistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CUNdnOVFBsu/?utm_medium=tumblr
