Nikolai's voice rang hollow into the empty sky over Meursault prison. Like a broken music box, his sing-song voice now dully repeated the same empty melody as if still hopeful there was still a chance for song, for freedom. 

This was what he wanted right?

He wanted freedom, right?

“I can fix this. I can fix this…” 

The mangled corpse taunted him as he held the severed arm to his chest. He couldn’t take his eyes off the bloodied remains. He could hear Fyodor’s voice like a god above, raining down divine judgment on Nikolai’s broken soul. 

This is what he wanted.

This was freedom.

“I can fix this. I can fix this…” 

He’d never felt more trapped in his own broken existence. His hands began to dig at the martyred body; now crucified and crushed under the rubble before him. He grabbed and clawed at any pieces of his Feyda he could find. As if trying to hold the man he wanted to kill close and piece everything back together again. Crimson stained his being as salty tears mixed with bitter blood. In his hands was a collection of limbs, organs, and regret. He sat there in a pile of eviscerated metals and flesh. Laughter sprung from his chest as his dull broken melody continued to play from his throat.

Was this really what he wanted?

Could he truly call this freedom?

“I can fix this. I can fix this…” 

He could sew Feyda back together. Then everything would be as it was. He could fight for freedom again and their little song wouldn’t end.

He could make this is what he wanted.

He could make his own freedom.

“I can fix this. I can fix this…” 

Frantic sobs mixed with Manic chuckles as he held the broken pieces of what was his freedom in his hands. A music box without its song, broken, trapped in a now worthless existence trying desperately to regain its lost pieces.

“I can fix this. I can fix this…” 

This wasn’t what he wanted.

And he would never be free.
