i think the spontaneous airbenders are so interesting
#lok#like ok#i know the show focuses on bending cause it's sick and cool (and it is)#but there's more to each culture than just their bending (though of course the cultural importance of bending can not be denied)#so there's this really interesting dichotomy where these people suddenly gain this culturally significant trait#from a culture and nation that's been all but wiped out#and suddenly there's this pressure to learn about this unfamiliar history and rebuild a slain people#but all the new airbender recruits. they're all earth kingdom#though they were from ba sing se which is unique in it's status as being 'unaffected' by the war#(and of course by unaffected i mean the war gave the ruling power of ba sing se an excuse to assert absolute power over its citizens)#creating perhaps the starkest rich and poor imbalance of all cities across the nations#so obviously their feelings towards their home culture would be mixed already#but there's more to being earth kingdom than the treatment from the dai li. like their families and food and things like that#i know they couldn't have gone back to their homes because of the safety concern. but it's crazy to have your life uprooted and implanted#into a culture you're expected to make anew.#i guess it's a really unique way to be an immigrant#i'd have liked to see more airbenders from the fire nation and water tribes but i know the last few seasons of korra were heavily focused on#the troubles arising in a post-war earth kingdom#because. for all intents and purposes. the earth kingdom won the war.#it must be assumed that the fire nation was made to pay repairations towards the earth kingdom and water tribes. especially because of#how much the southern tribe was able to be rebuilt (zuko seems very familiar with tonraq who seemed to be the defacto southern leader before#before they officially took independance from the north#and so despite the creation of republic city on what was originally colonized earth kingdom land#the earth kingdom is doing very wall after the war#we didn't get to see much of the fire nation at all in korra and i'm sad because i'm so interested in what a post-war fire nation is like.#we know that they turned their military resources freely out to republic city as the 'united republic'#but other than that it's pretty sparse information#and i say the earth kingdom is doing well but i mostly mean financially#which doesn't help the people especially with the weath imbalance#the scars of war are on every nation. and the earth kingdom isn't any better off for winning

SEVENTEEN ATLA HEADCANONS
genre. headcanons. avatar the last airbender au. warnings. none. featuring. ot13 seventeen. wc. 1.6k. (around 100 words each) request. no. a/n. obviously i've been on a svt atla kick since burnt promises, second chances. i'd be open to writing fics for any of these small headcanons if anyone is particularly interested :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SEUNGCHEOL
Ugh, Cheol is really hard. I kinda see him as any nation and also none at the same time. For the lack of other Water Tribe on the list, I’ll give him Water Tribe, but I don’t even think he’s a bender. He’d be a passionate hunter of the Southern Water Tribe, and a very good one, but not a bender. He’d always be eager to help out and fit his role as a true leader. He’s looked up to because he protects his people without fail. He’s good at strategics and known for his bravery. I see him fitting a role like Sokka’s father, but I don’t see him as anything glamorous like Water Tribe Royalty. He’s down to Earth and humble and honest. He leads and the people follow.
JEONGHAN
Jeonghan is an airbender. He’s witty and intelligent, and a great asset to his nation. He’d be in an Air temple close to the Earth Kingdom, and he often helps out with strategics if they ever need it. Definitely a kind and angel baby, but if there’s anyone who needs dealing with, he will personally take the task up. He’s world renowned and has allies and friends in every single nation. When he’s not busy, he’ll spend his time travelling around and immersing himself in the different cultures of the nations. He’s beaten Water Tribe hunters at their own hunt, evaded earthbender attacks in the ring because of how light he is on his feet. And his agility and wit proves to be useful whenever he goes head to head with a firebender. He can often predict their next moves and avoid attacks before they’re even fired at him.
JOSHUA
Joshua is Water Tribe!! Definitely a Water Tribe prince, or even a poor boy from the Northern Water Tribe whose parents couldn’t afford water bending lessons for him, so he would sneak around and watch lessons without getting caught. He’s mostly self taught, so he’s not exactly the best, but he can still hold his own. If he’s a Water Tribe prince, then he probably got bored with water bending very quickly as a child and started figuring out ways to skip his lessons lol. He knows clever ways to bribe or fool his masters into letting him slack off, but he also has to build enough skill to show at least a little improvement. He’s probably more interested in carving proposal necklaces to give to his future girlfriend than improving his bending skills.
JUNHUI
Jun is Fire Nation, and he’s extremely talented at Fire Bending. He probably runs a tea shop with his family and takes lessons on the side; just a regular middle class kid. He’s not aiming for a military position or anything high up, but he uses his skills to help him in daily life. He might have friends from places higher up in the city, and because of that, he got to take a visit to Royal Fire Academy for Girls. Definitely turns some heads— practically the whole school is crushing on him by the end of the 2 hour visit, and he enjoys the attention that he wouldn’t usually get at home. It’s safe to say that he’s invited back given the significant improvement in attendance and performance after his initial visit.
SOONYOUNG
Another airbender, only because he’s so agile. Like the spider choreo really makes me see him as someone who just likes to swing around upside down for fun. He’ll play pranks on the older monks, or just anyone he can get his hands on. He’s a lot like Aang in that way. He definitely creates his own airbending moves, because he is a choreographer!!! Somehow takes a trip to the Earth Kingdom because it was his life goal to see a tigerdillo in real life. Once he meets one, he somehow adopts it, and settles down in the Earth Kingdom from there on! He’s perfectly happy, and can he even pose as an earthbender if he’s smart about it.
WONWOO
Anyone could probably guess that I see Wonwoo as Fire Nation. I wrote an entire 14.5k fic about it which is expecting a part 2, but I just think he fits it so much? Especially in a role like the Fire Lord or some notable higher up who is skilled at firebending and definitely owns a dragon (if we’re talking a time period before/during the dragon hunts). He’d be the type to just be a natural at it and reach a high mastery at an early age. He’s such a skilled fighter, and definitely knows how to control his flame. He prefers to study directly from dragons instead of old masters, whose teachings feel regurgitated and watered down, which sounds pretentious, but it’s one of the reasons why he got so good.
JIHOON
I see Jihoon as an Earth bender. He’s short and stout but HE'S SO BUFF. He definitely has the density in him to move some rocks, he’s practically built like The Boulder but without the height????? I definitely see him as part of the royal guard, but definitely not an Earth King. He might teach Earth Bending or get posted out on the coast near the Fire Nation or something— but he definitely has a military position. Somewhere where he can use his earthbending to its full potential. Not the most talkative, but definitely the most efficient, so he climbs the ranks like nobody's business and everyone knows to respect every word that comes out of his mouth. If you say even a word about his height, he’ll throw a rock at your head before you can finish the sentence.
SEOKMIN
It was hard to pick between Water Tribe and Fire Nation for Seokmin, but I think he’s ultimately Fire Nation. I see him as an actor for plays, and he definitely uses his firebending to win over the audience. It got to the point that even though he’s from a small town in the Fire Nation, he became a household name and got increasingly popular until he eventually found himself acting in front of the Fire Lord. Once he got rich enough from it, he got a spot in the most infamous acting troupe in the Fire Nation. His favourite role to play is, of course, the Dragon Emperor in Love Amongst the Dragons.
MINGYU
Just a bulky earthbender I don’t know what to say. He probably got recruited to some military position because he’s fit and can hold his own in a fight, but boy’s just really a sweetheart. He doesn’t enjoy smashing people with rocks, so he tries to get out of the military as soon as possible. He instead works as a carpenter of sorts? Builds elaborate structures with his earthbending, and has a surprisingly artistic touch to his creations. Popular with the older ladies because he is a gentleman.
MINGHAO
I see him as an airbender, but I cannot imagine him with a bald head LIKE HELP. But let's say he is, and for aesthetic purposes, keep the long haired Minghao. He practically floats and flies through the air with his airbendings. He’s probably more of a lemur guy than a sky bison guy. I can imagine him having 1 or 2 lemurs who he spends most of his time with. Obviously very light on his feet and into meditation. He’s one of those star students in the class that the teacher picks as an example for the other students to watch and learn from.
SEUNGKWAN
A waterbender, and he’s good because he focused and studied the traditions of it. He knows the importance of the basics, and when he’s teaching, he can get mad pretty quick if he catches a novice waterbender doing a technique lazily. He teaches them the hard way, making the floor an ice rink or slapping in the face with a water tentacle if they make a silly mistake. But he’s a respected master. (Not to say that he’s old, but he holds the respect of an old master). Also a great healer for the Water Tribe. He thinks it’s important for the men to not just learn how to fight with spears and slices of water, but also to heal the tribe, and he offers his lessons to the women of the tribe as well.
VERNON
Another Fire Nation boy. He’s so skilled he can redirect lightning and all that jazz. He’s a worldwide guy too, so he’s definitely familiar with the other nations and their bending to a certain extent. (Like Iroh, studying the Water Tribe helped him with creating new techniques within firebending). He has a dragon because he’s hot like that, and would hold master firebending classes lol. Definitely has connections to the Royal Family and I could even see him serving as a personal guard or something of that sort. His skills aren’t to be wasted, so he can snag a high paying position practically anywhere he wants.
CHAN
Earth Kingdom kid from a poor family™, I mean it’s just so clear in my mind. I imagine his mom runs a corner store, and he likes to use his very limited earth bending skills to make the shop look prettier. If the wooden tables break down over time, he’ll earth bend a makeshift counter to display the trinkets for sale. He’s quite charming even though he doesn’t have much to say about himself. In the lower class of the Earth Kingdom, practically everyone knows him because he likes to go around and make new friends when he’s bored. He’ll help out the elderly if they need it, and flash a toothy grin to anyone he comes across.

My Immediate Thoughts on the Latest Avatar: The Last Airbender Trailer
THE SHIP DESIGN FOR THE FIRE NAVY SHIPS! THAT MAST!
This must be the North Pole and leading up to the Siege of the North.
Appa soaring through the skies.
Yeah, they're really going to go and show us the attacks on the Air Temples. On the one hand, I'm excited about the new material. On the other hand, I feel like I shouldn't be excited about witnessing a genocide even if it's fiction.
IS THAT FIRE LORD SOZIN? OR IS THAT JUST A RANDOM FIRE NATION GENERAL?? I THINK IT'S SOZIN??
Aang breaking out from the iceberg seems a lot more violent than the cartoon but it also looks awesome! And if I were Sokka and Katara, I'd be scared shitless seeing that.
I think that's Monk Gyatso voice in the beginning? And he specifically says that the Fire Nation is embarking on a dark path instead of the super vague "storm clouds are gathering" like in the original cartoon. So Aang goes into that iceberg with more knowledge in this adaptation than in the cartoon.
Daniel Dae Kim looks great as Fire Lord Ozai!
Azula with a bow and arrow? Guess she's expanding her skill set.
Blink and you'll miss it, but that is JET that Katara, Sokka, and Aang are talking to before there's a big ass explosion behind them.
WE'VE GOT THE MOTHER EFFIN OSTRICH HORSES, BABY!
IT'S ZUKO COMING TO RESCUE UNCLE IROH WHEN HE GETS CAPTURED BY EARTH KINGDOM SOLDIERS!
Aang, Katara, and Sokka checking out the ruins of one of the Air Temples. Southern Air Temple, maybe, probably?
Water Tribe! Don't know if it's Northern or Southern but it could be the aftermath of Zuko coming to the Southern tribe to find Aang.
Katara coming in with her belief that Aang can save the world.
I'm in love with every shot of Appa flying!
THE AIR SCOOTER!
AND HE CRASHES INTO A STATUE LIKE HE DOES IN THE ORIGINAL OPENING CREDITS!!!!
There you go! You whiny little complainers finally got your sarcastic Sokka. And he definitely has more emotional range than the Sokka in the other project that shall not be named so I approve!
THAT'S ZUKO'S TINY LITTLE WARSHIP CRUISING AROUND THE SOUTH POLE LOOKING FOR THE AVATAR!!!
UNCLE!
That's not Zuko pinning up that picture of Aang. Maybe it's Zhao?
I fucking love the masks on the Fire Nation soldiers!!!!!!!
Zuko, you moody, angsty, traumatized teenager! I love you!
(This better get renewed so we can get awkward Zuko. I want to hear him say, "That's rough, buddy." I want to know how many takes they ruined when they eventualy film that scene.)
ZUKO AND IROH TEAM UP AGAINST THOSE EARTH KINGDOM SOLDIERS!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you know guys, maybe we should hear out what the fire nation has to say?
Nope, sorry, I was distracted by the abs. They should have had him silhouetted because I'm pretty sure this is the AGNI KAI WHERE HE BURNS HIS KID'S FACE!
Avatar "I don't want the responsibility!" Aang.
It's giving "Because I never wanted to be" and "I'm just one kid" energy.
THE FACT THAT I WILL NEVER GET TO CUDDLE APPA IN REAL LIFE IS A CRIME!
Sokka coming in and reminding Aang that he's not alone in this.
Reminds me of early on in the show when he says "Katara and I aren't going to let anything happen to you."
Momo's excellent comedic timing, there.
IT'S JUN! AND NYLA! IT LOOKS SO FREAKING GOOD!
HOLY FUCKING SHIT! IF THAT'S HEI BAI, THEN I'M GOING TO SHIT MYSELF WHEN THEY SHOW KOH!
Oh, Zuko isn't showing up to Kyoshi this time, it's ZHAO!
SOKKA AND SUKI LOOKING AMAZING FIGHTING TOGETHER!
THAT'S TEO AND AANG FLYING AROUND! THAT'S TEO AND AAANG!
I guess one of the big changes from the cartoon is that we'll see Teo and his dad in Omashu instead of the Northern Air Temple because that's DEFINITELY Omashu they're flying around.
AANG! YOU'RE SO PINT-SIZED COMPARED TO SOKKA AND KATARA! AND THE RUNNING HUG! I CAN'T HANDLE THE RUNNING HUGS! THEY'RE MY KRYPTONITE!
BLUE SPIRT! WE'RE GETTING THE BLUE SPIRIT AND AANG FIGHTING TOGETHER!
Aang ready to kick some Fire Nation butt.
I wonder if that's part of the Siege of the North? It looks like Sokka flies him in on Appa and Aang drops in.
I think the next shot is the South Pole when Zuko attacks trying to find Aang?
Aang pulling out the Matrix moves when Sokka lets his boomerang fly!
KING BUMI! They were really accurate with the costumes here.
KATARA FIGHTING OFF ZUKO AT THE NORTH POLE!!!!
Jet looking like a badass and fighting off some fire benders.
I know I've guessed this several times, but THAT WAS DEFINITELY AANG AND ZUKO AT THE SOUTH POLE!
I like we see the glow slowly going over the tattoos as Aang goes into the Avatar state instead of it just going straight to glowing.
AND THE CHANTING! I LOVE THIS MUSIC SO MUCH!!!
I think Aang's last transition to the Avatar State is definitely him at the Southern Air Temple when he finally has to face what happened to the Air Nomads, but I could be wrong.
Anyway. February 22 isn't that far away and there are not enough words to describe how excited I am for this.

Avatar the Last Airbender Netflix Episode 1- "Aang"
Tumblr media
Well...the time has come.
My biggest question going into this series is asking why it needs to exist. I mean, from a business standpoint it makes sense. ATLA exploded in popularity overnight during the pandemic and Netflix wanted to cash in while the iron was still hot. Moreover, it's one of those "safe bet" projects. The name recognition alone is going to attract some viewers, even if just to compare it to the original. Doesn't matter if you don't like it, you still saw it. And if it boosts their numbers, it'll be a success regardless of critical reception.
No, my question stems from a creative standpoint: what are they going to do in order to make this remake seem like a necessary thing? What was so important that they needed to retell the story over again?
That's my thoughts going into the first episode. My first complaint is the structuring. It would not be a stretch to say that this episode had THREE introductions (arguably five if you count Aang and the water siblings being introduced): one by Kyoshi that gave an overview of the setting, one that set up that the Fire Nation was going to attack the Southern Air Temple during Sozin's Comet, and yet another by Gran Gran where she basically recited the original series opening. It just feels clunky, that we're being told the same information over and over again with exposition dumps.
And yeah, there's quite a few of them. Sure, some exposition is necessary to quickly relay the state of the world. But then we have stuff like Katara explaining that the Earth Kingdom is holding out in Ba Sing Se even though that's not exactly relevant to the current story? Stuff like that seems too much to throw at the viewer in too short a span of time. I'd hate to compare it to the original series where stuff like this was introduced more organically within the context of the story (Ba Sing Se was first mentioned in Iroh's siege of it, right?).
Last thing is that the acting was...hit or miss. Which to be fair I think was more direction and writing than any fault on the actors. Katara was...she was just kind of there for the most part I felt, not having any of the pent up anger of the original. And Gran Gran...yeah, her acting was bad. Really bad. Again, I'm blaming more on the writing since she felt stiff and didn't have any of the loving qualities despite her weariness of the original (didn't get a scene of her saying goodbye to Katara and Sokka for example).
Now, stuff I liked, and there was quite a few that I did like. I liked the actor who played Aang, he was a great choice. Really nailed down the balance between goofball and needing to take things more seriously. Some of the comedy beats were pretty good, like the one Southern Water Tribe member saying "He looks dead" about Aang, Sokka screaming his head off while riding on Appa, or one of the Fire Nation sailors grumbling about Zuko dragging their asses all over the place (first swear in the franchise and Zuko caused it).
There are two things I want to address here. The first change of Aang being more duty-oriented and wanting to clear his head instead of running away. I get the backlash...but I also think it's addressed here. In the original, Aang learned out in the worst way possible with nobody there to ease him into it. Which resulted in him running away. Here, Monk Gyatso broke it to him as gently as he could. It was still a bad situation, but I think a father figure being there to sort of steer him in the right path would've toned down his reaction in the original if that was allowed to happen. Plus it would've given Aang more incentive to take his duties seriously if Gyatso guided and vouched for him. Like he's doing it for his old mentor. I'd be interested to see where this goes.
Last thing: the scene between Aang and Iroh. It's simple, but effective. Aang asks why Iroh why the Fire Nation is waging the war, and the old man just gives off what sounds like Fire Nation propaganda. Aang shuts him down and Iroh...silently nods and agrees with him. It's actually pretty powerful. Aside from him realizing the implications that he just advocated the imperialistic rhetoric to a survivor of said rhetoric, it also sort of humanizes the Fire Nation a bit where an old veteran like Iroh admits that no, sometimes he and his people weren't always in the right. It's just he can't do much about it.
There. I complimented an Iroh scene and admitted he got one of the best scenes in the episode. Happy now?
All in all, it was...a solid start. I think I'm a bit more forgiving in terms of Aang's changed character since...well, I wasn't asking for a one-to-one remake of the original. There were a few things that bothered me, but I'm willing to hold the benefit of the doubt until they start becoming bigger problems down the line.
At the start of my watch, I asked whether or not a remake like this was necessary. What I got from this episode was..."maybe?" It's clear they want to do something different in terms of character, which is fine. It's just how clunky some of the dialogue and structuring choices were that holds it down a little. A shaky start, but there's room for potential.

Random yet brilliant GX/Avatar au thoughts I had after rewatching ATLA and watching LOK for the first time:
Idk if I'll ever actually write this but if I did I'd use the Japanese names because obviously they'd fit in better here but for the purposes of my random bullshit and by being my default names I'm still using the dub names in my notes lol
___
- Obviously Jaden's the Avatar lol. Avatar Jaden of the Fire Nation (since he's a big fan of red and all 🤭)
- Fire Prince Chazz, Lightningbender ⚡⚡⚡
- Dragons are a thing so Light and Darkness Dragon anyone?? 👀👀
- Atticus is a Waterbender, but Nightshroud is a Bloodbender 👻
- Atty and Lex are prince and princess of the Northern Water Tribe
- Alexis is also a Waterbender but since in the North it's forbidden for women to learn Waterbending except for healing purposes (at least it is in ATLA, clearly that's not the case anymore in LOK since y'know, Eska. But this is my brain I can use whatever lore I want aksksk), Atticus taught her how to Waterbend himself in secret 🤫
- Zane and Syrus are mixed nations like Mako and Bolin, Zane is a Metalbender but Sy is a Waterbender
- Syrus specializes in healing, not combat. I imagine Zane treats him basically like he's a helpless non-bender as a result. But in that mean basically telling him he's useless way that he would, not in a protective brother kind of way. He understands it's a very valuable skill but really wished his brother could fight and fend for himself so he didn't have to be protected all the time.
- Very high concentration of Earth Kingdom squad members lol
- Bastion gives me Earth Kingdom vibes but also I feel like he would be a Waterbender because Water Dragon 🤔 can't decide 🤔
- Jim's Earth Kingdom but a non-bender. I imagine in the equivalent to the accident that lost him his eye as a kid he just went blind. Shirley is his seeing eye Crocogator 🐊 (y'know, since basically all the animals are hybrids 🤭 i know Catgators and Crococats exist but this is funnier and I can make jokes about her totally just being a normal Croc that Jim's passing off as a cross between a Catgator and a Crococat 🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭)
- Jim's a mega badass swordsman though even with the blindness. Wouldn't be surprised if he had some Earthbending power lying dormant inside him, like a fossil waiting to be unearthed (no pun intended 🤭), but he's more than content to be a regular human, he doesn't need bending to enjoy his life.
- Hassleberry's 100% an Earthbender. Dude can probably even Lavabend but that's a big maybe. (I mean volcanoes helped kill the dinosaurs and all too so)
- My guy Crowler teaches at the University of Ba Sing Se and if he's a bender he's probably a Metalbender (cuz y'know, Ancient Gears. I am taking their decks somewhat into account here 🤭), probably a member of the White Lotus
- Sheppard's got that Airbending Master status babyyyy, also the current Grand Lotus, just chilling with his non-bending wife Dorothy 😌
- Slade vs. Chazz in a fucking Agni Kai, a la episode 35 !! (🤜🔥 🔥⚡🤛)
- Jaden has a Firebending block similar to Zuko at some point, but because his fire comes from his passion, not hate. In his emo era his passion is gone and he has to find it again and reignite his inner fire!
- Jesse's got those Earth Kingdom green eyes, probably from the Earth Kingdom, but I think he has some Air Nomad heritage in there. He's very connected to his spirituality and the spirit world. Kinda gives me Jinora vibes in that area, he definitely is a very spirit heavy guy. Crystal Beasts, am I right?
- Jesse could've been the Avatar if the cycle wasn't up to fire at the time. (Literally forget any and all timelines none of that matters this isn't a crossover we're talking about. Full au so continuity be damned! All that matters is that the Avatar cycle is now at fire 🔥)
- Axel's Fire Nation I mean c'mon his whole thing is fire aksksk, strong Firebender and probably in the Fire Nation Army too somewhere. A good man though, a very honorable and just guy, not a shitty shitty bad Firebender as is the general consensus in the world about Firebenders most of the time it seems.
- Aster also gives me Water Tribe vibes but like only kinda, he's hard to nail down element wise...... 🤔 he's got the blue eyes so I'm gonna say Water Tribe atm we'll see if my brain agrees with that later. Whether North or South idk, I'm still on the fence about him being a Waterbender but water is my favorite so not gonna complain about making more Waterbenders..... 🤔
- His dad was a non-bender and was 100% killed by a Firebender though. That would cause issues with him and Jaden since Jaden is a Firebender Avatar. Oof there you go, Aster's whole like fucking "you can't hide from destiny" batman era bullshit?? He's going around beating up Firebenders because he doesn't know who exactly killed his father ooooooooo 👀👀👀 (I guess kinda like Katara I guess in a way but also not really I mean she saw the guy who did it, not that she knew exactly who he was without Zuko's help figuring that out but shhhhh remember none of that's important right now 🤫)
- Dark Spirit Yubel ???? 👀👀👀👀👀
- DARK AVATAR SUPREME KING PAST LIFE !?!?!?
- Winged Kuriboh spirit guide 👀👀👀
- oof Adrian as a bad guy Airbender now that's a yikes idea. Sorry Air Nomads, somebody's not a good noodle.
- Chumley once again representing the Earth Kingdom
- Bro not sure about Banner..... so many options.....
- Earth King Kagemaru (bro those guys are almost always shady bitches whether it's the Earth monarch or the Dai Li bro we can NEVER trust the Dai Li)
- y'all Banner is so Earth Kingdom but he's also giving me Fire Nation, like aesthetically and vibes wise he could be either. But also because of his like alchemy background and straight up making a homunculous for himself and shit like that he's also giving me secret Bloodbender I'm literally on so many fences with this guy I can't decide 😭
- Also totally in touch with some spirits and stuff, totally dies and passes into the spirit world to continue existing there like Iroh did so Jaden can talk to him like the ghost we all know and love like another sort of spirit guide and Pharaoh can follow Jaden and crew around afterwords aksksk
- Stormshipping and Spiritshipping all over the damn place! It's me. You knew that was going to be a thing here.
___
That's all I got at the moment. Like I said I don't know if I'd ever actually write this, I know I have way too much on my plate right now to even think about this in a more on the table way than this but my brain won't stop so I have to indulge aksksk
Let me know y'alls thoughts if you got any I'm just messing around here really so lord knows 🤭 anyway if I come up with anything else maybe I'll add it later but for now holy shit guys isn't my mind a wild and crazy place??? 😜😂😅

If AST characters, canon or OC, were in avatar what nations would they belong to and who would be benders? This has weirdly been plaguing my mind recently so I want the offical opinion.
OKAY SORRY FOR HOW WILDLY LONG THIS IS, I REALLY GOT INTO IT. atla nationalities are not typically notes that i have on an y of my character sheets, but this was a really fun ask and i did get into it.
ast has too many characters for me to list them all, but here’s a rundown of the most relevant. if you’ve got any more specific questions, let me know! standard disclaimer that this is all headcanon.
water:
annika vizsla-skirata, non-bender. she’s more adaptable than din gives her credit for, but he can be forgiven on account of the head trauma and the not seeing annika for a year thing
din djarin, babey! i feel like canon!din could fit anywhere, honestly, except maybe the air nomads, but ast!din is 110% water tribe; changeable, adaptable and incapable of going anywhere without forming a community, even when he's not trying to. he is a bender but an unconventional one. what he lacks in formal training or technical skill, he makes up for with creativity and sheer bloody tenacity. i think the healing element of waterbending would really appeal to him
fenn rau, non-bender. i know in rebels canon he's a handy pilot, but tbh muffinlance's hakoda was a. not-inconsiderable influence on how at!rau came together, and i think he understands the power of community really well.
noora! non-bender, but community is her whole thing. it’s part of the reason why she and din vibe so well
quinlan vos, bender, except the difference between quin as a bender and din as a bender is the difference between an ocean and a river
earth:
the armorer, bender. she chucked many a boulder at din and paz's heads when they were kids. i made some comments in a chapter or two of ast about how the mandalorians have a lot in common with the dai li, and i think the armorer (at least in ast, though i'd argue in canon too)
boba, or at least ast!boba; canon!boba could potentially also fit with the fire nation -- that drive -- but ast!boba is earth kingdom. i could go ither way w/r/t bender or not, tbh; i think if he is a bender, there's some interesting meta there about jango and all of the other clones (though if the clones are benders i think the war would have lasted minutes, not years) and if he's not a bender there's also some meet there with how boba would respond to and challenge a world full of other benders who are probably his competition
jaig, bender
kasyyk, bender
k'kruhk, bender, and he would absolutely bury din up to his neck in rocks if luke let him get away with it
paz, non-bender. mans is textbook traditionality and adherence to a hierarchical power structure
the tuskens are all earth kingdom, incedentally, and there are a fair number of sandbenders among them. a closely-guarded secret is that not all of those sandbenders are earthbenders, but rather a creative outbranch of airbenders!
fire:
bo-katan, non-bender. she would absolutely fuck with the concept of an agni kai, and i think she has a really remarkable drive and ambition to her.
gida, bender, “aut viam invenium aut facium” is her motto.
fennec, non-bender, but a yu yan motherfucker; if the yu yan are moving chi through their bodies to bolster their shots and accuracy, fennec can absolutely do the same shit. i like to imagine fennec as my favoirte headcanon for ty lee, in which ty lee is fire nation with air ancestry. fennec is only a non-bender because if she could manipulate an element, it would be lightning and gorga would have been dead from the fucking get-go. there would not have been any plot whatsoever because she would have cut that off at the pass
jaster mereel, bender even though he's not in this fic literally at all. he's a firebender. don't make the rules
strill, bender
a lot of the mandalorians in general, i think, would make good firebenders. i leaned half on the european feudal model and half on the model of the fire nation presented in vathara’s embers fic, especially as relates to the organization of various clan structures and hierarchies. there’s also a lot of mandos who fit into the earth kingdom model and some who fit well as water tribe too, but quoth guru pathik, separation is an illusion and there’s elements (hah) of all of the nations in each individual one, so
air:
cobb, non-bender! i wobbled back and forth between water and air for him, because i think he could go either way, but idk, i think ast!cobb has a sort of trickster likeness about him that lends itself towards air nomad
grogu, bender, Horrible Menace once he figures out how to levitate
luke skywalker, bender, which is interesting because there is not a universe in which anakin and leia are anything other than firebenders, sorry

Do you think you’ll ever return to writing avatar fanfics? I really miss your writing!
Hi there dear!
I'm glad to infer that you enjoy my writing :) , but I am a terribly slow writer even at the best of times and very very rarely do I ever publish wips. (I think I've done that only maybe two or three times ever in *squints* ~two decades of writing fic.) ((I like to think the wait is worth it most of the time lol!))
That said, most likely at some point I'd like to finish and publish some of the wips I have, but I can't give a timeline for when the muse strikes! But for some hope, my current document for ATLA related fic snippets/ideas/scenes/etc runs close to 60 pages worth, for as little work as it's seen this year ;).
So, I'm as curious to see as you are nonny, haha!
But, since you worked up the nerve to ask, here's a little snip of some worldbuilding I keep in mind when writing (that hopefully won't get too jossed by the Yangchen novel!):
Avatar Szetzo’s name is commonly invoked by Fire Nation students before exams or tests (or by the more prepared, before studying).
The Earth Kingdom likes to invoke the name of Yangchen, the blessed protector,  the one who battles spirits who mean harm and keeps the peace. He name is muttered under breaths of the worried, the scared, the impatient, accompanied by a touch to the forehead and backs of the hands where her own tattoos had sat. Blessed Protecter, grant me wisdom, grant me patience, grant me peace, in a thousand whispers in a thousand different towns. During the war it fades, the generations without an Avatar growing disillusioned with the idea of such a protector. In the early days, there are some brave souls who make pilgrimages to the Eastern Air Temple, disabling Fire Nation traps and restoring what they can, leaving offerings at the feet of the statues of the Avatar. Ropes of flowers, precious stones, fresh foods, offered in the hopes that it will help guide the lost Avatar to help them, to guide them home. The older generations still look up with hope when the breeze blows particularly well, sending the ribbons or flags flying as if carrying their hopes along with them.
There are some places in the Fire Nation that have an unexpected soft spot for Kyoshi, both for her skill as a fighter and her sense of morals. Sometimes the hand on a blade stills in her name. The small southern island of the Sei'naka clan in particular looks kindly upon her, keeping a small shrine in her name even when it was against the law of the land. Why, they will not explain to outsiders to the island. She is revered not for her fighting prowess, but for her skill in stopping fights, for her healing abilities that would soothe burns and scrapes.
Kuruk’s once good name fell from grace in the eyes of him home in the north. There are only so many ways to argue the case for a brilliant tactician when he fell so far. He is not regarded in Water Tribe circles as a great Avatar- though Kyoshi in her time tried to amend the past as best she could- but he is held in high esteem as a hunter. His spear and hood are given life and stories within the stars, stories of his great hunts told over fires to young men out on the tundra in the deep night. They hold that finding the point of Kuruk’s spear in the night sky always leads back home. He is also well-regarded in circles of pai sho masters, especially those who favor certain gambits, and there are several strategies attributed to him.
There are pockets of islands that favor Roku, but his was most fondly remembered in the southern air temple, as a friend of those who lived there. After his name was all but outlawed form being spoken in his homeland, the monks carve his statue for the Avatar’s hall with care.
The Southern Water Tribe most often invokes the name of Aang, adopted son of their people, beloved of their most favored daughter. His name is used in the name of peace and its keeping. They affectionately call him a waterbending avatar as much as an airbender. The tunes of old airbenders are as easily heard sung in the southern tribe as they work or sail across the sea, coaxing the wind to be favorable to them as they go.

Atla fandom stop making everything about race challenge
#I'm a poc too but damn if it isn't irritating how y'all nitpick every single thing about the series and go 'sEE IT'S RACIST'#as someone with experience with the creative endeavors that come with creating a series I can tell you firsthand#none of the decisions y'all find 'blatantly racist' (which more often than not they're not. they're really not)#were made to purposefully appeal to a 'white' audience. y'all really think the creators would think about that while creating a show#that largely takes inspiration from Asian cultures. girl they wanted to make cool people who control water#and they have dark skin with blue eyes because it looks COOL and it makes sense from a design standpoint.#sure the water tribe having brown eyes would make more sense in real life but here's the thing#it isn't real life. it's fiction. and it was never meant to be the pinnacle of representation#these characters were created to fit in with the universe's context in mind#water tribe people have blue eyes because they have a connection to water. airbenders have grey eyes because they're connected to air#fire nation and earth kingdom are more varied due to size but most people have gold and green eyes respectively because#you guessed it#they match their elements#and also. since when is it racist to take inspiration from other cultures????#see I'd get it if Bryke parodied them and / or hid their inspirations#but they very openly discuss - and not only that. they embrace - them#they did so much research and spent so much time learning about these cultures not so they could 'rip them off' like so many people claim#but to build a FICTIONAL world with them#how is it different from. say. a manga artist making a series that takes heavy inspiration from cowboy culture#y'all wouldn't even bat an eye because it's (probably) a Japanese person right#even if it was grossly misrepresented#I swear y'all will see a white person do anything and jump at their throat for it#anyway im done ranting#listen. I'm not saying atla is perfect in its portrayal of real life cultures#but at the same time. it doesn't need to be#representation was never the shows's goal and while it is valid to criticize some misses#some of y'all truly do look at every single tiny detail of this show and make a big deal out of it saying it's 'so racist'#when really. it's not. I'm telling you from experience. stop#incoherent screeching#this is gonna make people mad but idec im so tired man

prompt #4
fandom(s): avatar: the last airbender and boku no hero academia
main character: todoroki shōto, and sorta zuko
other characters: all atla characters except zuko (it'll be explained), and also i'm combining zuko and todoroki's moms into one super mom.
setting: atla universe, with some changes to "zuko's" backstory.
basically i love zuko and todoroki and while i was watching bnha amvs i was thinking about them when i got the sudden thought—what if we replaced zuko in the atla universe with todoroki, and kept todoroki's waterbending ice ability??!?!?
basically, i imagined todoroki as zuko wandering the earth kingdom or whatever while pretending to just be an ordinary waterbender.
like, maybe zuko/todoroki's mom secretly had some waterbending ancestry and by some miracle (curse) zukoroki ended up with both firebending and waterbending.
like, he's still got the same thing where he grew to resent his father for what he did to him and his mother and refuses to use his left side firebend bc he doesn't want to be like his father and shit. except now with the bonus of banishment?
the hard part is figuring out which parts of either of the backstories to keep. for example: who gave him the scar? his mother? or his father?
idea: they both did. now, bear with me here—what i'm thinking, is maybe we keep the incident with todoroki's mom burning him with boiling water from a teapot (maybe iroh's there, idk—or, maybe that's why he always gets so angry when uncle tries to offer him tea, bc everytime he sees it or smells it it triggers his fucking ptsd of the person he trusted most in the world betraying him and causing him unimaginable pain, but like no one knows that bc it was kept so hush-hush that only zuko, ozai, super-mom, and maybe azula know) bc he reminds her of his father—
oh my god sorry for the intermission but what if she burned azula instead bc she's so much more like ozai and then ozai burned zuko bc he's too much like his mother and then we just have both of the royal fire children with burned and scarred faces, one with a burn from boiling hot water and the other from a searing roaring flame and just...both each have burns from one of their parents oh my gOD the ANGST
—and for a couple of years he goes around the palace with this horrible burn and people always stare bc like...that's the crown prince and shit. and idk ozai's probably not happy with it, but the point is:
when it comes to the agni kai, ozai decides to be extra cruel and burns zukoroki in the same spot his super-mum did, except harder and hotter so the burn is ever larger and more painful, so much so that it even reaches his ear and he can no longer open his eye all the way and his eyesight is probably damaged and maybe his hearing as well and—
and then he gets banished and he decides, you know what. fuck it.
his mom's gone, ozai's an asshole, his face burns, he can't see or hear right, and ozai still never found out he could waterbend. so.
todozuko is done with the fire nation. he's had fucking enough. he's decided he doesn't wanna go back, and no uncle i'm never changing my mind.
what would happen if i found the avatar? well i'd help him if if meant defeating my father—and go ahead, tell everyone how much of a traitor i am, i don't care. i'm already banished anyway.
you...what? you're—proud of me?? uncle, what—
and so zhōto and iroh end up traveling together (and maybe the crew, too? idk) zhōto eventually works up the courage to tell iroh about his waterbending and at first he's really terrified about uncle's reaction but
uncle looks at him like he's a fucking miracle or something, he looks at him with wonder and amazement and—
come, zhouto!!!! where are we going???? to get waterbending scrolls, of course!!!!! pick your jaw off the ground, there's no time to waste!!!! think about everything you're going to learn, everything you should've been taught years ago!!!! you're going to be a master waterbender, i just know it!!!!!!
and bc they never ditched the ship or told the fire nation of their treachery (for conviences sake) it's surprisingly easy for them to obtain waterbending scrolls—
—and also the only person who knew about his waterbending before iroh was his mother who he accidentally bent in front of and who, immediately realizing her own "tainted" bloodline was the cause, swore zhouto to secrecy and made him promise to never use it—
—and so zhōto and iroh secretly practice waterbending below deck in their rooms, and they keep practicing with it until they feel they're "ready," and then—with the help of their now loyal-to-the-death-crew (they at some point came to the unanimous decision that zhōto is way better than ozai, and he's surprisingly not a spoilered brat—bc unlike original-zuko he already despises his father and consciously makes an effort to be different) who go along with some made up lie that zhōto and iroh both died—
maybe zhōto fell in artic water during a storm and iroh jumped in to save him against the captain's warnings and refused to return to safety until he found zhōto, but before he could a wave cracked zhōto's head against the boat and he went under and iroh dived and dived and dived into colder and colder water until he was so so cold and he couldn't hold his breath any longer but the surface was too far away and he was too tired from the cold in his bones to swim and with his body empty of its last bit of air he just—
sank.
and so with a cover in place, zhōto and iroh said a tearful goodbye to their deathly loyal crew and then set off to live their new lives.
then skip foward a few years and they run into the fucking avatar and friends and wait shit is that—
—not long into his banishment, just after zhōto confessed to iroh about his waterbending, they set sail for the southern water tribe, figuring that it would be a good start for their search for waterbending scrolls, since the north would be too much of a risk and they figure: there's no waterbenders in the southern tribe anyway not after what we did to them so it's not like they need the scrolls...besides, we were gunna give them back as soon as we're done with them so if any waterbender babies end up being born we'll have returned the scrolls before they're even old enough to need them—
—but alas, when they make port they are told by a very angry boy about zhōto's age—
(i'm aging him down a year or two bc shōta was only like 14 in bnha while zuko was 16 i think in atla, about one year older than sokka—so he's about 11-12 when this happens, and katara and sokka are 11 and 12 respectively)
—that the fire nation burned any scrolls they had, when they killed his mother—
(oof)
—and so, to the great surprise of all the villagers present, and all who hear about it after, they leave immediately without harming or threatening anyone, without even searching any of the (huts? igloos?) for potentially hidden scrolls. they just...leave.
and the scarred one—the one with the golden trim on his collar who the other men defer to as if he's in charge—
—which is ridiculous, he's so tiny, he can't be much older than sokka, how could he be their leader, shouldn't it be that old guy—
—actually thanks sokka for his assistance before apologizing for taking up his time, and then leaves. what the fuck—
—then cut to three years later and now that boy (sokka of the southern water tribe, son of the chief, he had introduced himself as) and his sister (katara of the southern water tribe, daughter of the chief) were apparently traveling with the AVATAR. and that girl, katara? she's a waterbender. a fucking waterbender.
what the fu—

I don't know if you've ever answered something like this before, but Avatar: The Last Airbender AU? How would that work, especially considering the whole "people can have more than one color" thing? Unless, like Fushimi for example, he's a waterbender surrounded by firebenders for a long time. That's the only way I can kind of see it working. I'd like to hear what you think though! Your answers are always so well-written and easy to understand.
I know I’ve done at least a few Avatar AUs, though usually itinvolves grumpy Avatar Fushimi (because multiple elements instead ofmultiple colors). I kinda like the idea of Fushimi as a waterbendersurrounded by firebenders though, like say Fushimi’s a waterbenderwho was exiled from the north as a kid – well, he wasn’t exiled, his asshole dad Niki was exiled for bloodbending and Fushimi gotdragged along with him. The two of them end up in the Fire Nationwhere Niki has fun causing trouble using his powers, even though he’sa dick he’s extremely talented and can manipulate water while barelymoving his hands and he uses that to play a lot of pranks on peoplewho don’t realize that he’s actually a waterbender. When Fushimistarts developing his own bending powers Niki is amused and probablystarts tormenting him even more, like he uses bloodbending on Fushimijust to taunt him over how weak his powers are, like Fushimi can’teven fight back and he won’t ever be able to because he’ll alwaysjust be Niki’s ‘little monkey.’ Then one day Niki finally runs afoulof the wrong firebender and gets killed, like he pisses off thisgroup of criminal firebenders and they end up killing him and Fushimigets to stumble upon Niki’s dead body. He stares at it for a longmoment and then just gets this twisted smile and starts laughingbitterly because Niki deserves this, to die like a dog in a ditch, and Fushimi doesn’t even care that he’s on his own now because it’sbetter than being Niki’s plaything.
So Fushimi starts traveling alone, trying to hide his bender powersbecause he feels like he won’t fit in as a waterbender in a nation offirebenders. One day though he meets orphan firebender Yata, likethey both try to steal some food and end up running from local lawenforcement, Fushimi ends up using his waterbending to escape. Assoon as he’s free Fushimi turns to tell Yata to leave him alone, onlyto find Yata staring at him with shining eyes claiming that Fushimiis so cool. Fushimi thinks Yata must be mocking him, becauseno way a firebender would think a waterbender is cool but Yata istotally sincere, it’s not just that Fushimi has different bendingpowers but the way he uses them is amazing, he has so much controland precision and it’s nothing like Yata’s own wild powers. The twoof them keep crossing paths and end up becoming close, Yata andFushimi both have this desire to show the world that they’re morethan just useless orphans. Then one day there’s this whole uprisingfrom a gang of firebenders who are loyal to this firebender namedHisui who no one has ever met but who is trying to overthrow the FireLord (rumor has it Hisui is even strong enough that he solely useslightening instead of fire, but no one’s ever seen him so it’s only arumor). There’s supposed to be a high ranking official visiting thetown that day and Yata and Fushimi decide they’ll stop Hisui’s guysand show how strong they are, instead they’re nearly killed and getsaved by the visiting official who turns out to be Fire Lord Mikotohimself.
After this Yata and Fushimi are taken to the palace and get to becomepart of Mikoto’s loyal guard, Yata is thrilled and thinks Mikoto’samazing. Fushimi on the other hand is less excited, being near Mikotojust makes him feel on edge and the palace feels too hot all thetime. All of the other guards are firebenders and even Mikoto’s weakadviser Totsuka has some bending ability, Fushimi is the onlywaterbender there and he rarely uses his powers because he feels likeit makes him stand out too much as someone who doesn’t belong (ohimagine that’s why he has his knives in this AU, weapons he can usewithout bending). Then one day Munakata, the chief of the southernwater tribe, arrives to have a meeting with Mikoto. During theirmeeting Hisui’s people try something again, attempting to killMunakata as well, and Fushimi saves Munakata using his waterbending(though he feels like he didn’t need to and Munakata could have savedhimself, and the smile Munakata gives him afterward makes Fushimisuspicious). Munakata notes that it is odd that Mikoto has awaterbender among his men and Mikoto just says it’s none ofMunakata’s business while giving him a unexpectedly sharp look.Fushimi assumes it’s because Mikoto doesn’t like it being brought upthat he has someone in his employ who clearly doesn’t belong, andeven when Munakata eventually suggests Fushimi join his guard insteadit doesn’t occur to Fushimi that Mikoto is wary on his behalf. However now Fushimi’s all in a spot because he doesn’t want to leaveYata but he also feels like he doesn’t belong and that Yata’s notlooking at him anymore anyway and he doesn’t know what to do.
