2, 8, 10, 15 - for the writer asks! XD
2. How many fics did you work on this year? (They don’t have to be finished or published!) Oh man...I have notes and little bits of two paragraphs here, a page or five there, but most of those will never go anywhere and I'm sure I've forgotten most of those ideas already but for knowing that they're in the depths of my Google Drive.
I published 10 (which is way more than usual for me!) and I've worked on/started four that I feel committed to finishing and posting eventually, as well as one more that I'll either write in the next week or watch it disappear into the ether (pretty sure there's not gonna be an in-between option for this one). This has been a year of hyperfixation whiplash, which, combined with ADHD, has had me spiraling all over the place with ideas and then promptly getting distracted and losing the momentum.
8. Did you write for a new fandom or ship this year? You know, I didn't—this was actually the year of me returning to some very, very old roots! I've written and posted my first 24 fic since, Christ, idk...2006? And then my first BSG fic since 2011, my first Doctor Who fic since 2012, and my first Star Trek fic since 2013. I wasn't expecting this but it's been pretty wild and fun! The TNG cast reuniting on Picard and then having David and Catherine back as the Doctor and Donna on Doctor Who were extremely inspiring external factors, but BSG and 24 were basically whims. I signed up for a BSG exchange in honor of the 20 year anniversary because I thought it would be fun to dip my toes back in that pond and then absolutely panicked when I realized I had to actually write BSG fic in the year of 2023, and then I started the 24 fic during a rewatch awhile back and @starg8rocks reminded me of it a few months ago and inspired me to finish it.
So, in short: no new fandoms, but lots of old ones!
10. What fic made you feel the happiest to work on? I mean, the blood sacrifice (aka the Succession yacht vs. orca crack fic) was pretty entertaining to me personally. I'm also just having so many feelings about Doctor Who deciding that the 2023 message is "rest, recover, and reconnect with all of your friends". So, while it was quite bittersweet and partly the result of me actively rejecting the premise that Sarah Jane Smith is dead in-universe, it was mostly just lovely and cathartic to write what falls away is always and offer two characters I adore a soft, quiet moment of care and connection.
15. Rec a fic you wrote or posted in 2023. The two fics that I agonized over most this year were let your faith die, bring your wonder (BSG, Laura Roslin gen) and we even flew a little (Succession, post-s3 but pre-s4 Roman/Gerri). Between one being in an older fandom and being gen vs. shippy and the other being posted just before season four of Succession started and catapulted the entire fandom, me included, into a new era of fic, I'm not shocked that neither of them got as much love (comparatively) to others I posted this year, but I like them. They're both fics I'm a bit self-conscious about and felt unhappy with when I posted with but I think that's largely because they took so long and stressed me out more than anything else I wrote this year—I liked them more upon revisiting.
my fic from this year send me 2023 fic questions!

fic writer interview
thanks for the tag, @gosiksmallspace!
name/nicknames: caroline, although some people call me katie or cron in certain fandom or friend circles :’)
fandoms: primarily beyond evil these days, although star wars, star trek, and the boys have been rotating around in my head too.
two shots?: i’m pretty sure i must have more than one, although the first one that comes off the top of my head is read all the books beside your bed, but then again, some people might just say that’s a two-chapter story instead of . . . a two-shot? (some people might say that’s just a two-chapter story, while others might say that’s a two-shot . . . some people might argue that a two-shot are two separately posted stories but just have other parts to them, idk! but i do know i have a second part planned for but you could make me a drink (or a latte), so maybe that’ll count as a two-shot!)
most popular multi-chapter fic: uh, kudos and subscriptions wise, probably to these memories, although about love (and what’s after that) feels more popular these days purely because a) it’s been posted more recently, and b) the sheer amount of interaction i’ve had with that fic makes me :’))
actual worst part of writing: for me, it’s probably just. the sheer amount of self-criticism i have to deal with when writing. i can’t express the number of times that i’ve scrapped whole wips or decided to rewrite whole endings and chapters purely because i didn’t think it was perfect enough, or all the times that i’ve just given up writing a story because i felt that i would never be able to do it justice or that i just suddenly get intimidated and think, well, now everyone’s going to be let down by my inability to write a satisfying ending and so on and so forth . . . i’m trying to be a little kinder to myself these days, but i definitely. struggle a lot with thinking, this isn’t good enough and god, i’m a fluke and etc etc. but you know! we try our best, as we always do. we carry on!
how you choose your titles: usually lyrics from the song that i’ve been listening to/was inspired by when writing! although sometimes i’ll go back and change it if i realize that some other title is more appropriate.
do you outline?: for most one shots that are less than 20k words, i usually just freestyle. but for longform stories, i definitely outline!
ideas you probably won’t get around to, but wouldn’t it be nice?: i like to think that i’ll always get around to my ideas, so instead i’ll just say that it might be a while before i get around to them . . . but i would really love to write a longform mckirk story one day, although i have no idea what that might look like! i would also like to write a period/historical jwds au one day, which like. i am doing right now, but i keep running into “god, this isn’t historically accurate” or “:/// no, i don’t like this plot anymore” or “is there enough tension here. is there enough chemistry. do these two just sound like they’re snarking at each other the whole time instead of actually doing anything”.
callouts @ me: you don’t need to write something just because you feel like you haven’t posted anything in a while. your writing will get better when you’re writing because you want to, not because you feel like you have to.
best writing traits: i like to think i’m good with dialogue!
spicy tangential opinion: hm, not sure how spicy this is, because i think most commenters are actually incredibly pleasant and kind and encouraging, but i think. i think something i get annoyed at for both myself + for other writer friends, it’s. uh. hm. when you are commenting on someone’s work, please do not use that space as another way to ask “by the way, when you are you updating [x]?” or “so is [x] just abandoned now” or “how come you’re not updating [x]”. it’s lovely to see people care about your stories, but there are proper times and places ask those questions. asking them in the comment box of a new/different story is. is not the way to go, imo.

Star Trek: Picard should’ve been about Seven from the start
Before I dive into my proposal, let me just say that I do not hate or even dislike Star Trek: Picard. I have enjoyed both seasons (not as much as Lower Decks or Prodigy but still). However I do think that they’ve kinda screwed with Picard’s character and that Seven has more potential for her story to continue. Just wanted to clear that up before I express my grievances.
IMO Picard’s character arc was pretty complete after Nemesis. He’d learned to accept every part of himself, both good and bad, so there wasn’t much left for him to deal with. So what did the show do with him? He learned to accept Data’s death in season 1 and learned to accept his mother’s death in season 2. Also he met Data’s daughters and got a Romulan girlfriend, which I don’t know how to feel about (I mean I like Laris, but I just keep thinking what the fuck happened with Beverly?!). While I can understand him having trouble accepting Data’s death, he should’ve accepted his mother’s long before his twilight years IMO (perhaps it could’ve been a movie plot, cause let’s be real nobody cares about insurrection). So ultimately I don’t see the point in him having his own show so late in his life. Just let the man live in peace!
Now onto Seven. Again, I do like what the show has done with her. While there are some things that I don’t agree with, overall I have enjoyed her development and interactions with the other characters. But there’s still a lot that hasn’t been explored concerning how she ended up the way she is in Picard.
What we know so far is that after Voyager returned, Starfleet refused to accept her into their ranks but did accept Icheb (which is complete bullshit btw). We know Janeway threatened to resign if they didn’t change their minds, but Seven gave up and decided to join the Fenris Rangers instead. At some point she became involved with Bjayzl, who apparently had a thing for Borg parts and harvesting them for sale on the black market (seriously Seven how did you miss that?). She kidnapped and mutilated Icheb, who Seven tried to rescue but ultimately failed at. And that’s pretty much it before she appears in the show proper.
Honestly that’s not a lot. While Picard has had his story pretty well fleshed out, there’s still a lot left to be told of Seven’s. Like how did she find out about the Fenris Rangers? How long has she been with them? And how the fuck have none of the other Voyager crewmembers checked up on her?
So yeah, if I were in charge I’d want to make Seven the protagonist of the show. Picard can still make an appearance (if we’re gonna deal with the Borg Queen I’m sure she’d want to involve Locutus). I’d still keep the cast of new characters, except maybe Agnes (I never really liked her). I always thought Rios was too much of a rogue to fit into Starfleet, so I’d make him a ranger too. Obviously I’d keep Raffi the same, as well as Elnor because they’re perfect. Soji can stay, maybe she could even stay an android/synth idk. Obviously I have ideas for the other characters, but I think I’ve made my point. Tell me if you agree or disagree. Do y’all like my idea for a Seven show?
Oh and btw, I’d call the show Star Trek: Ranger.

July 10, 2023
Both my undergrad and grad uni subreddits were a bit of a mess after the affirmative action ruling.  As a somewhat high-performing (I would say “slighty-above-average” but I think that says more about the company I keep and the circles I find myself in than how I actually compare to most people) underrepresented minority from a “middle class” background... I feel weird about it all.  Really weird.  Idk.  Responsible reparations would fix a lot of the issue (albeit slowly) but what do I know.
DECOR SHOPPING HAS COMMENCED.  I’ve got a mini globe, I’ve got wisteria (might get more), I’ve got an Enterprise-D model on the way, I’ve got several craft ideas of varying difficulty, from printing out maps on beige paper and painting thrifted glassware into terracotta vases to creating mossy crystal mini terrariums and a crocheted granny square blanket (which I may wait to make until I get into the new place, so I’ll have far too much time to plan it to perfection).  Speaking of crafting, I have to organize my crafty things and pick my favorites to come with me.  May and June were months of rest.  July and August are to be months of craft.
I feel a bit calmer about spending since I have a TA check coming in a few weeks to offset some of it.
Somewhat related to crafting, I’ve wanted to try ginger braids for a few months now, and I may be able to incorporate them into an Ariel halloween costume.  The only other thing I’d really need to make from scratch would be some black outer piece (swiss waist/vest/corset).  This is a big deal because this could be my first year with a full-fledged costume.
I started looking for star trek things to print out and hang on the wall, and I’ve found, well, a lot, including an entire technical manual??  I don’t have enough pieces of cardstock to print all of them, but there are several things in here that I love and cannot wait to hang.  I’m also looking for poetry and quotes, but the only one I’m for sure going to put up is Harlem just as a kind of reminder.
I’m just really leaning into the whole idea of romanticizing my life, is all.
But back to hair, all the black girlies on tiktok have decided that this is mini twist summer, so I did my first ever set of mini twists!  They took eight hours to do (normal twists take ~6) + washing/conditioning + banding overnight to minimize shrinkage (I still woke up with damp hair though so I just gave up on that tbh).  I didn’t really worry about proper parting except at the very top, and I didn’t put in gel at the roots, though I probably should’ve done that anyway to give them that fresh style look for a couple weeks.  I also tried out some new techniques this wash day (ten twisted sections instead of six bunned ones, washing my whole head but not taking out the twists (waaay more scalp access with smaller sections), a fantastic new deep conditioner, using one of those flexible detangling brushes in small sections) which I think helped everything go smoothly.  While I love the uber feminine braided look, it is nice to be done with my hair in 24 hours including breaks instead of a week-long endeavor.  And I’m kind of into the mini twist look!  They’re giving microlock vibes, but they’re frizzier, less shiny, and a bit less bouncy/voluminous than I’d anticipated, unfortunately.  Overall, I can see myself doing them again (of course, I’ll have to see how long they last).
Last thing: it’s a little difficult for me to empathize with people who don’t have a passion for learning who actively see learning as a chore.  I know in my mind that a degree is a necessary evil for some people, I know in my mind that not everyone has the luxury of making school their full time job.  But, still, I have to actively stop myself from snapping at students who are trying everything they can to express their distaste for being in a classroom they signed up for.  I know, no one takes a three-week course because they have a burning passion for bioanth.  I know this.  But.  I’m not going to let that kind of attitude shake me.  I’m going to bring my enthusiasm and hope that it drives me and everyone else to the end of this class.
Today I’m thankful for the movie Easy A.  It was cute, a little wacky, and it made me laugh.
I’m also just kind of thankful in a more general sense?  Like, six-ish months ago I had my first TA day and momentarily felt with a scarily immense amount of conviction that I would be admitted to my top choice graduate school [Choice E].  And today I set up a meeting with my advisor from that very school.  It’s... it’s a little surreal.  And only seven months ago I was petrified because I had no idea what the end of this year would look like.  And, I mean I guess I still don’t know for sure, but I’ve got a better idea and it feels lovely.
[edit, a few moments later: also also thankful that my cello-friend found a job!!!  He’s been on the hunt for ages and I’m really happy for him!!!  And on another friend-note, my dnd-friend finished her certification exams and I’m so proud of her, I just know she’s going to be a light in her profession]

Spirk fanfic rec
Some amazing Spirk fanfic to bless your dash because I’m falling in love with this shit all over again (this is like the 10th time this has happened lol):
Entering Orbit:  Jim escapes to Iowa to avoid the media frenzy following the Narada incident, but a late-night miscommunication results in Spock turning up on his front porch; rated m; 30,957 words
Papers in the Roadside:  Non-Starfleet AU. Jim owns a small bar in Chicago, keeps on picking up strays and taking care of everyone no matter how hard it makes his own life. Spock is a journalist writing feature articles for the Chicago Tribune; he depicts the world with uncanny skill, but hides more than one personal drama and is possibly under surveillance from the Vulcan royal family. They meet by accident just before their lives start to spin out of control; rated e; 49,637 words
Take Refuge in What You Know:  AU - Kirk has moved into a apartment/house and wants to get to know his neighbors. He meets his neighbor Spock, a loner who suffers from extreme agoraphobia. Kirk thinks he's beautiful enigma; rated e; 120,334 words
Listen, this is not only my favorite Star Trek fic of all time, it’s also one of my favorite fanfics in general. It’s right up there with Text Talk and The Shoebox Project from the HP fandom, which if you’ve read, you know are incredible and frankly life-changing. And this fanfic changed my life. The description the author gives doesn’t do the beauty of this fic justice. I suffer from agoraphobia and Spock’s depiction as an agoraphobic man was probably the most well-researched, sympathetic, empathetic, caring, realistic portrayal of what it’s like to be agoraphobic that I’ve ever witnessed in fiction. It made me cry like a child because I had never felt so seen and understood. This writer is incredible, and this fic is incredible. I can’t recommend it enough. It’s an AU, which I’m usually pretty wary about, but it barely even feels like an AU. It just feels like Jim and Spock. The author’s understanding of both of their characters’ is perfect, like just a spot-on portrayal of who they are. This fic genuinely helped me accept who I am and helped me understand that I am capable of & deserving of love. If you don’t read any other Star Trek fics (and you def should read more Star Trek fics because they’re amazing), then let this one be the one you read. I dare you not to read it three times in a row like I did.
Observations:  First Officer Spock comments on life aboard the Enterprise and his service under Captain James T. Kirk; rated m; 500,000+ words.
So the author of this fic actually did a thing where they made this fic into two books (similar to what The Shoebox Project authors did many years ago in the HP fandom). They don’t get any money from people buying the books; the cost is just to go towards producing the books. This fic is the equivalent of two LARGE novels. We’re talking 600 pages & up. It’s a huge fic. Now, that being said, I read it in one day. ONE DAY. It’s that good. This is another one of my all-time favorite fics, though not quite as dear to my heart as the one I listed above. It’s focused on AOS, and tbh, I forget that what happens in this book isn’t actually canon. Like it’s so well-told, it just feels like it’s now part of the timeless story of Kirk & Spock. The “professional” Star Trek writers would never be brave enough to do what this author does with Kirk and Spock, though. This fic will make you angry, will make you laugh, will make you cry. It has such a good grasp on every single character. It also shows the love between the crew of the Enterprise, which is always a treat, and it’s beautifully done in this fic. It has a sorta-enemies-to-lovers arc between Spirk and an enemies-to-close-friends arc between Spock and McCoy that is beautifully done and fleshed out. This fic is definitely a journey to go through, and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s extremely slow burn, and you will want to slap both Kirk and Spock (and McCoy) upside the head at certain points lol.
Of Coffee Beans and Green Tea Leaves:  The progression of a relationship, through Coffee Beans and Green Tea Leaves. Basically, it’s an AU where Kirk works at a coffee shop to pay his way through school, and Spock visits often. rated t; 16,429 words
Love, love, love, this fic. It’s cute, it’s in character. They have kind of a rocky start together, so it’s got a little bit of that Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy i-hated-you-but-now-i-love-you-marry-me vibes to it. I’m a sucker for that, if you haven’t figured that out by now lol. It’s really good, and a really enjoyable read. And it’s not too long, if you’re in the mood for something on the shorter end of things.
Please Don’t Touch the Vulcans:  The "yes" is out of Jim's mouth before he can think about it. Jim is chipper about having time off for the holidays. He asks everyone if they want to spend time together but sadly, everyone ditches Jim over the holidays because they have plans. McCoy visits his daughter, Nyota visits her family, and everyone splits. Not knowing Spock has feelings for him, Jim doesn't even bother asking if he wants to spend time together figuring he has something to do. Something cute, romantic with the boys spending time with one another and confessions; rated m; 17,690 words
Super cute and has lots of Sarek, which idk about y’all, but I’m always a fan of. Sarek and Jim kind of get to know each other a bit, and it’s cute. Sarek knows about they’re in love before Spock & Kirk know lol. If I remember correctly, there’s also some appearances from everyone’s favorite: Old!Spock! You also get a little bit of jealous and protective Young!Spock. So you’re in for a real treat with this one.
The Ren shat’var Trilogy:  A split-second decision changes Jim's life forever, as he enters into a bond with Spock in the face of certain torture. Enemies to the Federation emerge from unlikely places, and the command team must contend with unexpected threats, as well as challenges within their own intense relationship. In this three-part series, the Enterprise races across the galaxy to confront the unknown, and Jim and Spock discover the true significance of their unprecedented connection; rated e; 184,411 words
Textual Attraction:  Valentine’s Day does not bring up pleasant memories for Cadet Kirk. But the serendipitous switch-up of his cell phone with a particular Vulcan professor’s will make his day far more interesting –and romantic. Perhaps some new memories can be made! 15,900 words
SO GOOD. Just SO good
Spaceman:  Academy AU. Five times Spock realizes he's attracted to a barista at the academy spaceport, and one time he decides to do something about it. rated t; 3728 words
Short, sweet, funny. You’ll love it.
Subtext: Texting your Vulcan first officer in the middle of the night is never a good idea. Especially when you have an obsessive crush on said Vulcan. The holidays are approaching and Jim is left entirely Spockless aboard the Enterprise when his First takes shore leave on New Vulcan. After some midnight pining, Jim sends a text he instantly regrets. That is, until Spock responds and willingly continues their textual communications to an inevitable conclusion; rated t; 13,032 words
Cute, sweet, funny. It’s a texting fic. I think you’ve probably figured out I love those. This one makes me laugh so fucking hard. Like actually laugh-out-loud-omg-did-i-just-snort kind of funny. Spock is great in this one
All Spock Wants For Christmas:  While Jim is away on a delegation mission, he panics about what to give Spock for Christmas. With help from Bones and Uhura, and in between some spam texting with Spock, Jim realizes he already has the perfect gift. And all it needs is wrapping paper and a bow; rated t; 11,966 words
And here we have another cute, sweet, funny texting fic. Sue me lol
The Morning After:  Jim convinces Spock to take shore leave with him on Risa, hoping the time together will help re-solidify their bond of friendship after some recent tension. Meanwhile, Spock convinces himself he's on Risa for one reason and one reason only, to prevent his wayward captain from getting into trouble. After a passionately illogical night of Romulan Ale and chocolate infused liquor, everything changes when Jim wakes with something other than a hangover filling his head. Something he's sure neither he nor Spock can handle. Because if Jim knows anything for sure, it's that his messed up thoughts belong nowhere near Spock's clean, ordered mind; rated m; 50,381 words
HAHA. This fic fucking cracks me up. You’ve got drunk boys pining over each other & not realizing it. You’ve got accidental marriage. You’ve got bed sharing. It’s great, it’s cute, it’s funny.
Take This Sinking Boat (And Point It Home):  In which Spock pines, Jim isn’t stupid (except he kind of is), and Christopher Pike has had enough of this bullshit; 6698 words
Pike is great in this one, and it’s super, super funny.
Extracurricular Activities:   Spock returns to the Academy from a tour of duty to find an intriguing cadet captures his attention; rated e; 15,433 words
Veritas: Basically, Kirk and Spock are on trial because the Federation thinks they are emotionally compromised by each other, which is putting the lives of their crew in danger. They have to convince a court they’re not actually in love with each other. They think the claims are bullshit. They think it will be easy to prove that they aren’t in love or emotionally compromised, damn it. It isn’t; rated m; 186,80 words
This one is so, so good. A real gem off of Fanfic.net. I remember it was actually one of the first Spirk fanfics I ever read, and it blew me away. The progression of their relationship is really well-done and interesting. It has star-crossed lovers vibes and has some really emotionally intense moments in it, especially for Spock.
A Habitual Affection:  Living in 1930s New York with the Vulcan you're secretly in love with is no simple thing. But Jim never liked anything simple. And then, the big snowstorm hit...; rated t; 7998 words
A beautiful TOS fic about one of the gayest episodes of Star Trek. Love this one.
Atlas:  Between what was and what will be stands James Tiberius Kirk, in all his fractured patchwork glory. Because saving the Federation was only the beginning; rated t; 135,529 words
A beaut. Really great characterization, and the progression of Jim and Spock’s relationship is really well-done.

Can you describe the batfam by the type of movies or series they like to watch? Also what are the other's reaction whenever they watch it together?
Hell yeah! Tbh I feel like movie nights would be some of the most frustrating nights in Wayne manor, just cause everyone is hella opinionated. Like they take turns letting each other choose movies but even then they fight for at least an hour over what was chosen. But here's what each member typically chooses when it's their turn. Also I briefly mention their reactions in here but I'll probs do a Batfam Movie Night dialogue, fic, series, thingy (??? Idk what to call those things) and I'll link it back to this ask when I do. Link.
Dick:
Genres— Musicals, Rom Coms, Spy Movies
Favorite Movies— Mamma Mia, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, The Greatest Showman, Notting Hill, Pretty Woman, A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Kingsman
Basically Dick is guaranteed to pick a musical or a rom com. He loves things that are big and dramatic and beautiful, but also a bit cheesey and silly. Like him.
Everyone groans when Dick chooses the movie because they know it will be a bit cheesey or the stereotypical "Chick Flick". That being said usually what he picks is genuinely good (Mamma Mia and Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again are both masterpieces) and they leave everyone laughing or feeling happy.
Dick does also love classic foreign films (mostly European) because they remind him of movies his parents would sometimes take him to see, this wasn't super common but occasionally the Graysons would find a local theater showing classics.
He used to love the Kingsman movies but stopped liking them after everything that happened with Spyral.
Babs:
Genres— Sci-Fi, Comedy, Rom Coms
Favorite Movies— A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Martian, Star Wars, Star Trek, When Harry Met Sally
Babs is a complete nerd and loves all of the Star Wars and Star Trek movies. She'll occasionally watch Lord of the Rings with Tim but she definitely prefers the nerdy Sci-Fi movies.
She only started liking Rom Coms after dating Dick, he loves them so much that it was pretty difficult for her to not start liking them as well.
When watching one of her favs Babs will be mouthing along the entire time. She also has a lot of cool memorabilia from her favorite franchises.
Jason:
Genres— Classics, Dramas
Favorite Movies— Twelve Angry Men, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, To Kill a Mockingbird
Jason isn't too big on movies. And surprisingly he's not usually super opinionated about movies, he can be pretty opinionated on which movie the family will watch. This is less because he's trying to be combative and more because he's sick of watching his siblings favorite movies, he feels like hes seen them all a million times.
Typically Jason isn't a huge fan of movie adaptations or remakes. They don't bother him and he doesn't care when a new one's released but he's not going to watch it.
Sometimes Jason will accidentally fall asleep during family movie night, these are one of the few nights where he 'cuddles' and honestly it's less cuddling and more 'oops I feel asleep and ended up on someone's shoulder or lap. Whether or not he falls asleep depends on if he's fighting with Bruce or not. If he and Bruce are fighting Jason won't feel comfortable enough to fall asleep (he might even skip movie night), but if they're on good terms he might doze off.
Cass:
Genres— Fantasy, Comedy, Sci-Fi, Horror
Favorite Movies— The Big Sick, The Thing, A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Tangled
Cass mainly knows about movies from her movie nights with Tim, Babs, and Steph, so her tastes have developed based on theirs.
She and Tim frequently watch old B Horror movies together, every once in a while one will quietly sing "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" to the other and they immediately burst out laughing. This is most commonly done at galas.
Tim bought her a sweatshirt with a "horror movie periodic table" on it and she wears it almost constantly.
Tim:
Genres— Fantasy, Classic Horror
Favorite Movies— Lord of the Rings, The Exorcist, The Thing, Stardust
Tim absolutely adores fantasy movies, he's a huge nerd and definitely uses fantasy movies to help him plan his next DnD campaign.
While Tim adores fantasy movies he's more likely to watch movies from his second favorite genre— Classic Horror.
Him, Cass, Steph, and Babs love having movie nights together because they're all major nerds and tend to like a lot of the same movies.
Steph:
Genres— Comedy, Anything Cass recommends
Favorites— Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Big Sick, Palm Springs
Steph is much more outspoken than Tim, Babs, or Jason. This is part of the reason why she is one of the more polarizing siblings on movie night. If she doesn't want to watch something she will let you know.
She can making picking a movie difficult, but every other aspect of movie night is improved by Steph. She gets fun snacks, fuzzy blankets, cool sodas, and she even made them all shirts when they did a Lord of the Rings marathon.
When watching a movie Steph will quietly mimic lines or noises that she likes. She never notices but she does it during every movie. Like during Monty Python she'll whisper 'clip clop, clip clop' when they bang the coconuts together.
Duke:
Genres— Documentary, Mockumentary
Favorites— Darkest Knight: The Truth Behind Gotham's Hero, The Keene Act, America's Most Dangerous City: Gotham, What We Do in the Shadows
Duke loves watching documentaries on Batman just to see how off they are. No one argues when he suggests them for movie nights.
One time he, Jason, and Tim made a 'documentary' about Batman. It looks completely serious to anyone who doesn't know Batman's secret identity.
After making the Batman documentary he decided to make some more on random Gotham villians. He's made about six and all look completely serious to anyone who doesn't know the villian.
In his documentary titled "Riddle Me This" he said that the Riddler gained riddle themed powers after a tragic accident at a riddle book factory. Edward did not appreciate this.
Damian:
Genres— Action, Survival, Documentary
Favorites— John Wick, Riddle Me This, The Keene Act, Jungle, High School Musical
Damian is the absolute worst to watch action movies with, he spends the entire time ripping the movie apart and mocking anything that is even remotely unrealistic.
He and Duke will often talk about their favorite documentaries, he's even started helping Duke make documentaries. Right now they're working on one about the League of Assassins, Tim watched the first cut and almost pissed himself from laughing so hard.
Jon showed him High School Musical and Damian pretended to hate it but secretly he doesn't mind it. Obviously Jon knows this so he showed Damian the entire series, and now it's sort of become their thing.
Bruce:
Genres— Whatever the fuck his kids agree on
Favorites— Please for the love of god let his kids pick a movie
Bruce is tired and just wants to watch a goddamn movie
As always these are all headcannons and have little to no cannonical support. Also all of Dukes movies (except the last one) are documentaries I imagine would exist in the DC universe.

What do you think about the "Dark Knight" Trilogy?
I think it's partly to blame for everything wrong with modern comic book movies, because they performed really well, so studios thought: Oh, audiences want stories about comic book characters, but with all of the sci-fi, magic, camp, fun and joy (everything good about comics basically) stripped away, and that's basically every comic book movie we've gotten since then.
IDK who decided fantasy needs to be more "realistic," but if there's one thing I'm definitely NOT looking for in my escapism, it's a "more grounded take." Do you know what's incredibly realistic? Real life. And do you know why I like fiction? Because it's not real.
I'm not saying those movies were terrible, I just wish they had bombed at the box office so I didn't have to continuously suffer through "oh, this isn't magic; it's actually [the most boring five minutes of your life you'll never get back]" scenes over and over again every time I go to watch a comic book movie, because God forbid that anything ever be fun or silly. We have to be super serious in our movie about a man dressed like a bat fighting crime. 🙄🙄🙄
And, I really hate that they cast so many PoC characters as white people. They cast an IRISH actor to play RA'S AL GHUL. Brah. Get the fuck out of here. NO. And of course there can't be a Lazerus Pit, because, again, God forbid anything be cool or fun in Nolan's joyless colorless universe. That would be terrible!
And of course we can't have a Robin, because this is a super serious comic book movie. Instead, we'll showcase Bruce's more human side with a forced love triangle featuring a woman with as much personality as a wet piece of printer paper. God, she was insufferably boring. And I will give them credit, the actors for Two-Face and the Joker were great at their jobs and delivered compelling AF performances. But Christian Bale was not a good Bruce Wayne. He just... annoyed me. A lot. He really gave me the impression that his Batman cared more about his ego than he did the people of Gotham. Which, is a pretty obnoxious character trait in a superhero.
Honestly, those movies are a perfect example of how to make a comic book movie for people who hate comic books. I could feel Nolan's contempt for the source material radiating off of his script. I could see him rolling his eyes at me. "Oh, you like magic? You like fun campy villains? Fuck you, here's Bruce Wayne's depression beard."
I'm just so sick of watching movies made by people who clearly don't like the source material and think fans of the source material are cringy and annoying. Same thing with these new Star Trek movies. "Fuck you for liking the original series. I'll wipe it from the timeline." Like, damn, if you hate the original stuff THAT MUCH, why don't you just create original characters for your generic action movie then?
But they can't, because they want the name recognition from Batman, but not the actual lore and mythos. So I'm forced to get my hopes up and be disappointed time and time again. So, yeah, they were pretty mediocre. Didn't care for them. Soundtrack was incredible though. Definitely recommend listening to that.

Fic Writer Questions
from @clarrisani !!!
1) How many works do you have on AO3?
on ao3 i have 28. tbf though i never transferred over a bunch of my stuff from lj back in the day.
2) What’s your total AO3 word count?
176,571
3) How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
11 listed on ao3. shout out though to house, which i wrote a bunch for but it never made it to ao3, and likely never will, and also to sherlock holmes which i wrote some fic for but more significantly, spend 2 years roleplaying. also if we want to get real nostalgic, the hits from my ffn days included such fandoms as lizzie mcguire, buffy, star trek voyager, monk, and of course, labyrinth.
4) What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Inevitable Homoeroticism in Spanish Romantic Heroes: my dean is a hispanist, grad school au. written bc at the time i was reading so many college aus and going you know what. you know what this fandom needs. and also i need therapy and instead i will write this fic.
i’m so glad it was and still is well received, and until this year’s dcbb, i thought i’d never write something as personally significant as this ever again. i’m happy to be adding something else to that list shortly (and hope it’s as well liked!).
as a sidenote, this fic was requested by and heavily cheerleaded by a friend of mine who has since passed away, and i will always think of jaymee when i think of this fic.
Like Real People Do: my impulse-written, kneejerk reaction to cas’s confession in 15x18. i wanted cas to have a chance to process his feelings separate from dean and also i wanted to push back on the notion that he was happy just saying it bc maybe after all he wants dean to love him back. it’s fitting that it comes after the grad school au in this list bc it was my return to fandom. also a rare example of me writing cas pov. (soon to not be so rare.)
Flying in Circles Inside a Jar: a s5 era fic where dean and cas get together in a roundabout way. god this was written so long ago and there are parts of it i want to change, but overall i’m still proud of a lot of moments in this fic. some good dialogue in here.
Command Me to Be Well: my angstier entry into my s15 fix-its. dean decides that he will let him and cas have sex but they can’t have feelings about it. this got way more popular than i thought it would, and it took me forever to write it, but it was definitely proof to me that i could come back to writing bc i had to edit this fic a bunch, and i was always horrible at editing. but i have better meds now yay!
fourth place is technically the codas to the grad school au, which also have some good moments but also the last coda i wrote makes me cry when i think about it still. but bc it’s part of the same universe i’m going to add:
Some Boys are Sleeping Alone: another early days fic ft. dean coming to terms with his sexuality and how it was affected by his father among other things throughout his life. this has essentially become the backbone to my conception of dean’s sexuality in canon. it ends sad! plot twist for me these days.
what i love about this list, looking at it now, is that it’s a healthy mix of my old stuff and my new stuff, and overall represents well my themes of dean’s bisexual journey and several examples of cas standing up for himself, though s4/s5 cas was just like that.
5) Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
i didn’t back in the day so much bc, you know, grad school, i was busy. i’ve been trying to since i got back into writing but have been staring at my inbox of things i need to reply to for like three months. i will do it at some point!
6) What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
god i don’t know. i wrote so much angstier stuff back in the day. i don’t really want to re-peruse all the random stuff on my ao3 but here’s one that sticks out to me even still: the au that has quinn fabray from glee in a sham marriage with jason mcconnell from bare: a pop opera and no one is happy. no one asked for this fic but i had many feelings about it.
7) What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
these days most of my fics end happy, but the one that still has me tear up at the end is the fluff entry i wrote for dean’s birthday: through autumn’s advancing. it’s jody that always gets me. jody hugging and murmuring a goodbye to dean, and then dean watching as she hugs and whispers something to cas. i don’t know what she’s saying but her embracing cas just gets me every time.
8) Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?
oh boy. back in the day, i would write just about anything anyone asked of me, and i prided myself on selling the wildest concepts imaginable. my lj contains a multitude of shames, but on ao3 probably the wildest is supernatural/my little pony: friendship is magic. here’s another example of me writing cas as he bonds with fluttershy.
9) Have you ever received hate on a fic?
i don’t... think so?
10) Do you write smut? If so what kind?
boy do i! uh the naked kind?? idk my approach to sex scenes is to try to capture realism but in the emotional sense. usually there’s a fun amount of dialogue. some amount of significance beyond just the act itself. i think my big thing is still representing the characters as themselves, in character.
11) Have you ever had a fic stolen?
not that i’m aware of.
12) Have you ever had a fic translated?
i don’t think so?!
13) Have you ever co-written a fic before?
this dcbb is essentially being like executive produced by @marbleflan. but there may be a more explicitly co-written fic coming up. :) :) :)
14) What’s your all time favorite ship?
dean/cas, hands down. nothing will ever compare to the absolute insanity of the way they happened in this television show.
15) What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
i started a dean/benny/cas purgatory fic that i want to get back to one day... also my fic with ghost!kevin teaming up with human blood!crowley and human!cas.
16) What are your writing strengths?
i’d like to think it’s capturing the feel of the character and staying ic. that’s my #1 goal always and the best comment i could ever receive. i like my dialogue too.
17) What are your writing weaknesses?
plot. i can’t plot to save my life. also editing. also inventing any original character is an absolute blindspot of mine.
18) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
well i mean. i have. done that. my bilingual experience involves some weaving in and out of a language in conversation, usually mid-sentence or once you hit a word you either can’t think of in one language or feels better in another. or filler words/phrases like well, or let’s go.
19) What was the first fandom you wrote for?
gosh. probably lizzie mcguire.
20) What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
the grad school au will always hold a special place in my heart. but i also really love this one i wrote that was a love letter to the virginia state fair, which i went to like every year when i was a kid and still hold a lot of nostalgia and love for in my heart. i really want to retool that one. there are some things i want to change about it, you know, almost ten years later.
@ anyone who wants to do this thing!!!!!!!

Fics I Wanted To Write This Year But Didn't, Part 2: Star Trek AU
For @spookyvoidangelskeleton for this ask
Now I suppose these would have been several fics, but in a series or a collection as they're all about the same main storyline: The collapsing of a (or several) universe(s).
If you've known me for a while, you know that I am very into Multiverse Theory, both real life and fictional, and Star Trek with the Mirror Universe is of course one of the first fandoms that comes to mind for me to write my batshit ideas in xD
Basically, in my personal little (fictional, bc I know and understand 0 about real life physics or whatever would be relevant for this) multiverse theory, there are an infinite number of universes, evenly spread around the multiverse, and a new universe comes into existence when a timeline/universe (same thing) can go into 2 seperate ways naturally, or when there is timetravel involved to manually change a timeline: The original timeline won't be affected, you can't change what's already there, but a new changed timeline will be created.
Now, in some cases that works out well, with the timetraveller ending up in the new timeline and never knowing that their original universe is still out there- in other ways of time travelling, not so much. If the person trying to make a change manages to do just that but never notices, because they or a version of them is stuck in the orginal timeline, what do they do?
Try again, with the same result, many many times.
And that's where it gets problematic, because the multiverse gets unbalanced, and whether you see it as a sentient entity connected to the Qs in Star Trek or just as something that Works That Way automatically: the multiverse doesn't want to be out of balance, so the new universes start to collapse in on each other, creating a Splitter-verse and leaving its inhabitants to a fate arguably worse than death (in this fictional world): they completely stop to exist. This doesn't just affect the new universes but the surroundings ones, which would have split earlier and are already more different from each other, too, to make sure the one that was the cause for it all falls, too.
Now (of course, because I can't help myself) this would be part of @thelucyverse , with there being Central people trained in spotting such time anomalies before it is too late, but with there also being time-bombs (yeah hahah) created in inter-universal wars to create smaller, controlled splitter-verses (I say small and controlled here but like. We're still talking about entire universes), and with Central having back-up plans to get people out of the 'verses, in order as follows: anyone visibly IDing as Central (the organisation is still largely volunteer-based, shit's got to have some perks), then everyone whose energy indicates recent travel in-between universes, as these are also most likely to a) be Central and b) be okay in a new 'verse, after that, if there is still time and anyone willing to go back into the falling universe, children as they are also more likely to adapt in a new world. If there is enough warning, they also get out whoever people Central members want to have saved, but usually it just turns into whoever stands close enough to grab and get the hell out of there.
Whether taking people out of a universe against their will is a good thing or nah is ...debatable and still being debated amongst those who do it and those who think that taking someone away from the possibility of dying death in their own universe is vile (as amongst most religions, it is thought that you can only reach the same afterlife as those who died in the same umiverse- but again most also think that there probably won't even Be an afterlife in a splitter-verse).
Sometimes, people are also pushed out of the universe by the explosion itself, but they then tend to die upon impact as they seldomly end up exactly at the coordinates where they left, which leaves them either suffocating in hard matter or in space.
If you want to use these ideas for your own fanfic feel free, just give me credit and link this post as inspired by/ link to my ao3 or @ my tumblr!
Anyhow! To Star Trek... and I suppose this is now SPOILERS not rly for any Star Trek canon but for these fanfics, if I do end up writing them!
I tend to forget which characters are canon and which are complete OCs because I spend Way more hours on tumblr and ao3 + thinking about my own headcanons than I spend consuming the original media, but I am fairly certain a canon Joana McCoy, daughter of Leonard 'Bones' McCoy exists? If no and I stole the idea from sb else's fanfic I am sincerely sorry. Gotta look that up.
In one universe close to what would be the centre of the splitterverse, Joana- as a young child nicknamed 'Jojo', but now as a young teen trying to get rid of the childish nickname- has a younger part-vulcan girl as a friend, and this girl, nicknamed Aka, has, through having sticky fingers and connections to Central, a device that allows you to jump between universes. She's used it before and gotten into a lot of trouble for it, but to her it had always been great fun- until reality is starting to collapse around them while she is visiting Joana, and Joana is the only person she can reach in time and take with her to the next universe.
Distraught, the children are left in a new world, debating what to do, waiting for Central to contact them, hoping that they saved their families- but of course, Central has quite some different problems right now and won't contact them any time soon, and even if they did it wouldn't be with news of their parents: the adult families of non-Central members who only happened to have jumped between universes before themselves are really not the top priority, and the universe is collapsing too quickly to even get down the prio list to 'children',
Aka wants to leave the universe again and look for Central elsewhere, hoping that her moving around will attract their attention. Joana has enough from universe jumps for a lifetime. Thus, they part ways.
While Aka at some point does run into a group of Central troubeshooters who more or less adopt her as one of their own and teach her how to work their equipment and use magic and weapons and starships (not what a child her age should be learning. But then, none of the adults there ever signed up to be a parent, so who's to blame them), Joana goes looking for her family in this world.
Now I could write entire novels about Akas adventures and how it may or may not be healthy to not have a home at all and decide to not rely on anybody instead of either finding new versions of her original parents or letting someone new into her life properly (spoileralert: it isn't healthy at all), and how meeting a girl from one of the original splitter-verses (the not bombed ones) telling her not to make the same mistakes she made finally makes her think about her choices and and and, but this post is already going to be Long so I won't. That would all be a seperate fanfic anyways.
Joana finds a girl her age who looks just like her and acts almost exactly like her, too- the only difference seems to be that there's no Aka around, which made this version of her less used to adventure but also less wary of it.
The version of Joana from this universe- she decides to call herself Joan when they are alone, while the Joana we already know goes with 'Jojo'- her once loathed childhood nickname now a connection to her past- is thrilled to meet her and begs her to stay, I mean what is cooler than suddenly having a twin, and won't it be fun there is so much they can do! As their parents are seperated, they manage to spend their time mostly at one of their homes, either together when the parent is too busy to notice that there are two kids around, or one at each place, guessing correctly that if the parents were to talk about it, they wouldn't even think of the possibility of there being two children and instead just get mad at each other.
This goes on for a few months during the summer, with Jojo feeling vaguely guilty both to her original dead parents and these new ones who think that she is their real daughter, and the girls are just deciding about what to do when school starts again when-
Reality breaks apart around them.
Jojo clings to Joan in fear, and- as Jojo is now on the list of people who have travelled between universes in the past, she is saved by Central, and Joan with her. They are placed into a universe further away this time, a safe distance to the only slowly contained Splitters.
Meanwhile, in the same universe, two people were currently out on a space-walk: Michael Burnham and Philippa Georgiou.
They are thrown out of the universe in the explosion, and as they are wearing their suits, they survive as they end up somewhere in space again, but- they don't end up in the same universe. Michael ends up about 20-30 years earlier in a universe further away, and she doesn't even end up in what would've been federation space in her old 'verse. Philippa is only thrown one universe to the left and picked up by Central. As Central likes to name their acquaintances in some way that makes it easier to identify just which version of a person you are talking to without having to add the long universe number (even harder when the universe was destroyed and there isn't a known number), they ask Philippa to pick a new name. She is way too rattled and desperate to go looking for Michael as quickly as possible to care about what name she is supposed to have, so she goes with the first option given to those who don't have their own nickname ideas: lastname for firstname, making her Georgiana, short Gia.
Through Central, she finds out that the universal explosion left her and Michael connected- but it won't be much help in the search, basically just a way to say 'alright this verse is closer to it than that one', it's still trial and error... (I could also involve some body switching here, idk I already wrote a long fanfic with that trope in the Andromaquynh fandom, but I happen to Like that trope so yeah maybe I'll recycle some parts of In Your Stead if I ever do manage to write this Milippa story. Which, btw, if not already obvious, would again be a seperate fic from the Joana universal-sister story. On the other hand, Aka runs into Georgiana a lot, even calling her 'auntie Gia').
Meanwhile, Michael doesn't have to jump through universes but make her way through just the one universe to get to federarion space. Except what she find's isn't the federation at all... you guessed it, the 'verse she ended up in is more similar to a mirrorverse than to Prime. However, the Georgiou of this world isn't the emperor yet, she's young and Michael is able to influence her enough over the years so that she turns her back to the Empire.
Yes, it takes years for Michael and Gia to find their way back to each other, maybe decades... they also wouldn't have spent exactly the same amount of time apart as they aren't in the same 'verse. In fact, Cleo of Central carefully tells Gia that Michael might have died by now, but of course Georgiana doesn't want to hear this.
Michael and that universe's Georgiou also get quite close, though Michael doesn't want to cheat on her Philippa... of course, after years of this, she might think that she will never see Philippa again... (We are approaching ot3 territory here lol, and I don't even want to think about the potential of ot7 with the two canon mirror and prime versions adsfghjkl because if I finish this story here, I would 100% write a lil fix it where Central! Gia Mikay and Phil go fish Mirror! Michael and Georgiou out of a splitter-verse into the next prime verse in which Michael already knows that Georgiou... and ad they're already at it they also get half dead! Prime Philippa away from the Klingons... heheh sounds like the kind of poly chaos I would enjoy writing, but sadly I have to make it through all the Plot first)
Anyway! Back to Jojo and Joan: they decide that while they maybe should have told Joan's family about Jojo's existence soon if they had stayed in that 'verse, the initial idea of staying with one's universals wasn't so bad, so they go looking for this universe's Joana McCoy. The girl- (nicknamed Anna, which makes Joan decide to change hers from Joan to June because she doesn't want to be half Jojo and half Anna), is happy enough to meet them, but often feels left out from the other two as they act as if they've known each other forever even though of course it's only been a few months... In turn, Jojo and June aren't sure whether Anna really wants them around, whether she might think they're trying to steal her life and family from her...
Lots of potential for conflict! Yay! XD would of course come to a happy ending, with at least Bones accepting his three daughters, dunno yet whether they'd tell the mom... also Aka ends up in the same universe at some point, together with a version of her vulcan birthmother who she had never known the original version of but now gets along with alright... oh and if I do write aforementioned Milippa ot7 bullshitery, this would also be the Prime!verse for that, so all stories in the series or collection interconnect again!
this got... long... and I could obviously go on but I need to go back to writing my Bachelor thesis :(
@whoever read through all of this, do let me know whether you like these ideas and which you would like to read proper fanfic for! Might influence future writing decisions.

Star Trek TOS Liveblog: S1E1 - The Cage (Original Pilot)
I didn’t watch this one during the first watchthrough since I assumed it wans’t canon... then. Got to The Menagerie. Oops. But that episode also used a good amount of the pilot’s footage, so I still didn’t feel the need to go and do it. But now with a second watchthrough underway and since Strange New Worlds is filming... well, why not do it now?
It’s Young Spock XD
Nice sweater uniforms.
Gosh Nimoy’s portrayal of Spock is so...different than in series. Obviously they hadn’t figured the character out at this point which is why, but still.
You can see the basis for Kirk and Bones’ relationship was already in existent with Pike and Boyce, except without the strong chemistry with Shatner and Kelley that made it work.
Oh hey paper still exists. Did they ever use that in TOS?
The bridge looks so much... duller. Splash some blue on it at least!
Shiiiiiny liiiiights~
Ah good, the blatant sexism existed even in this! At least the ladies were allowed to wear pants in this one and Number One’s look when Pike talked XD
Wouldn’t it make more sense to leave the Captain on board as the most experienced officer and send the First Officer to lead the landing party? Oh right, woman... and TBF when did Kirk ever do that? Guess by Picard’s time protocols got changed.
...yeah you know they hadn’t figured Spock out yet when he’s openly expressing emotions/smiling. Then again this is young Spock, maybe he hadn’t mastered the control yet.
Ah yes, I’m starting to recognize the sections shown in The Menagerie.
Pike is kind of.. boring. TBF Kirk could have easily ended up this dull if not for Spock and McCoy helping balance it out and Shatner being... Shatner. The bit I’ve seen of Pike in recent material seem good though, so I’m rooting for Anson Mount to make Pike his own~!
Yep, being easily romanced/suckered by women and their love lives in general sucking has GOT to be a pre-requisite to be a Starfleet Captain. That’s my headcanon now and I can’t be proven otherwise~!
Spock’s haircut in this is so cute to me for some reason and IDK why.
While the bridge and the planet look kind of dull, the weird lab are actually looks pretty cool~
Does anyone else think that the Talosians kind of look like the Vians? Are they sister species like the Vulcans and Romulans are? They DID both kidnap humans for experimentation so... hmm...
Number One is freakin’ great. it’s a bummer that they had to drop her cause NBC was against a female in charge and/or forced Roddenberry to pick between her and Spock. But hey Majel Barrett got to be Chapel and SNW is going to give Number One the limelight she deserves~!
Guess now I know where some of the ideas for Shore Leave came from. They even got the princess part down. Pike, if the guy draws a lance, DON’T STAND THERE! RUN FOR IT! SERIOUSLY, IT’LL HURT!
Yeah, they absolutely borrowed from this when they did Shore Leave. Just for wacky hijinks instead of human experimentation.
I was gonna ask why they never bothered using the giant laser again in TOS... but it failed so I guess that’s why. Dang it, giant lasers would have made it better!
Yeah, keep your specimens happy and get the girl a mate... and forcibly imprison others at your guys mercy. This is NOT how matchmaking works guys!
Pony~!
Oh, the Green Alien Girl bit... forgot about that...
Lady, I’m sure that the 23rd Century Medics can help you and your physical condition. There are better options than living in a delusion like this...
And now that I’ve seen the pilot in full... Spock, I love you... but wHY DID YOU DECIDE TO HAVE PIKE PLACED HERE OF ALL PLACES ALL THOSE YEARS LATER?!
Well... that was a thing. I can see the pieces that would make TOS... but yeah it needed work. A LOT of work. But I’m glad that I watched it and I’m very interested to see how SNW is going to handle things.

Star Trek: Picard should’ve been about Seven from the start
Before I dive into my proposal, let me just say that I do not hate or even dislike Star Trek: Picard. I have enjoyed both seasons (though not as much as Lower Decks or Prodigy).
Again I do like what the show has done with her. While there are some things that I don’t agree with, overall I have enjoyed her development and interactions with the other characters. But there’s still a lot that hasn’t been explored concerning how she ended up the way she is in Picard.
What we know so far is that after Voyager returned, Starfleet refused to accept her into their ranks but did accept Icheb (which I’m sorry, is complete bullshit).
Picard can still make an appearance (after all if we’re gonna deal with the Borg Queen I’m sure she’d want to involve Locutus). I’d still keep the cast of new characters (except maybe Agnes, I never really liked her).

“people who’s favorite star trek ship is janeway x chakotay. nothing wrong with it but like damn thats your #1?”
Excuse me but what’s there not to like? Badass woman and her equally strong yet supportive male wife.
Considering trek’s horrible track record with canon relationships be glad we stan an actually healthy relationship.

Happy Two’s-day!  The last true Two’s-day of the next millennium.
Being twenty-one feels... uncertain.  Granted, I suppose it’s only been a few hours.
This probably isn’t new knowledge to most people, but I’ve just come to the realization that Q might have a degradation kink.  Why else would he put up with the restrained disrespect shown to him by Picard, a being he could blip out of existence with a mere thought?
And speaking of Q, I don’t know if I expressed this here after I first saw the TNG series finale episode (actually, I’m pretty sure it was my second time seeing that episode but it had been years) a few months back [edit: I did not, see August 20, 2021 [edit 2: AHHHH ALSO ON January 2, 2020]], but while the episode overall was good, the plot was very much not.  The whole “Oh Jean-Wuc, humanity nevew exists because of thiws thing you did awnd you’we awso stiww own twiaw hehe wiww you figuwe out the mystewy uwu??” kinda sucks because he wouldn’t’ve done that thing in the future if Q hadn’t been there screwing around with the timeline.  Now, it was a great episode, interesting to watch, sort of served as something of an epilogue, kind of, but the rationale behind the plot does not make sense to me.  And maybe it’s because I’m not big-brained enough to understand, but also... it’s possible that it might’ve just been dumb.
Unless you think of it as Q having a serious infatuation with this mortal and is acting out like a child in a sort of “notice me senpai” sort of way.
That reminds me: I need to watch Picard season 2.  I am literally so excited for that omg.
On similar lines, I watched my first ever Star Trek: Enterprise episode a bit ago (S1 E2, I think) and it was interesting!  Super heavy on the early 2000s aesthetic for sure, but like,,,,,, okay.  I know you’re supposed to watch DS9 and then Voyager after TNG or something like that, but also,,,, I highkey think I might just go straight into Enterprise next lol.  And then maybe DS9 and then the Original Series and then Voyager and then Discovery.  I know that’s jumping around in the timeline a lot, but also,,,, it’s fictional, and these shows can stand alone, and I don’t really care.  Theoretically I have years upon years to go back and watch everything “chronologically” but that’s not a huge deal for me right now.
Of course I would be thinking about Star Trek on my birthday.
On Monday, my English professor was running a little off the rails (as he often does, but it makes a boring class more fun tbh) and bringing up a ton of philosophical questions related to artificial intelligence and our relationship with it.  He mentioned Westworld (which I’ve never seen, and while the plot sounds good, I’d be afraid of it being a wee bit heavy (idk, it’s on HBO Max, so I may give it a try)), but a lot of his questions were very similar to the types of questions that TNG posed.  I mean there’s the very obvious “Measure of a Man” episode where Data’s personhood is put on trial, but I also thought of that episode with the little robots that develop agency and decide to sacrifice themselves, and there’s the episode (that I don’t remember a ton) with some lil nanites that Wesley made(?) and they develop consciousness (I just did brief research into the episode and apparently each of the uniforms cost $3,000 to make I-- (and apparently Gene Roddenberry’s vision was for there to be no zippers n stuff by the twenty-fourth cenutry???? (upon further research: due to the fact that we don’t have anything better than zippers, they were used throughout the series lol))), and then there’s the episodes with the sentient holodeck dude (Moriarty?).  ANYWAY I just think it’s interesting how we continue to ask questions about “personhood” and how far our empathy extends to things that don’t look like us, things, we create, or both.  Because, as Picard so eloquently put in Measure of a Man (and which I will dutifully butcher), not applying empathy to things we create turns them into, essentially, slaves.  But then, as my prof mentioned at the end of his explorative rant, sometimes a toaster is just a toaster.
I love it when things make me think of Star Trek (also I share a birthday with the Seven of Nine actress hehe).  And you can bet your behind I’ll be considering some of those episodes in that context for the next few days.  If you’re lucky, maybe I’ll write an essay on it.
Today I’m thankful for a chill day today.  Nothing particularly special.  Meaning I fully intend to get to bed “early” tonight.  In the next week I have two exams, a bone practical, and two concerts.  Let’s do this.

so, hi. I've got a bit of an annoying question that you totally don't have to answer if you don't want to, but,,, I know you're into dc right? at least into batman? or idk I saw your long post about dick grayson rn and I know you post about batman/batfam (?) sometimes?
point is, I've never gotten into dc, never read a comic in my life and I've vaguely watched some of the batman movies while they were on tv but didn't really pay attention, but lately (as in the past two or three years) I've seen here on Tumblr talking a lot about batman and the batfam and all of Batman's adopted kids and how great they're and the found family dynamics and shit and ?? I kinda want to check it out nyself?
basically my question is, as someone who's never read/watched basically anything dc, where should I start? or is there a certain canon I should focus on? or if you don't wanna answer (which is totally fine) dyou know of anyone who may've already talked about this? I'm sure a million people have I just ?? don't even know where to start looking??
honestly a fandom this big and this diverse and with this much different canon it's a bit overwhelming, when I got into star trek at least I knew to start chronologically but with this I don't even know
anyways, thanks for your help! ❤️
not an annoying question at all!! in fact a very welcome question indeed, i love introducing ppl to new fandoms and i rarely get asks (srsly i've only gotten three in the entire history of this blog lol) so it's a two-for-one, win-win deal!
now to answer your lovely query:
yes i do love batman and yes i am a fan of dc and yes i'd be happy to help you on this journey of embarking on a new fandom, should you decide to continue! I'm actually a relatively new-age fan in terms of fully immersing myself in the content, I grew up with Teen Titans and later Young Justice, both of which I attribute much of my beginnings as a dc/batfamily fan to. I watched the Justice League and Batman animated shows when I was younger but they didn't stick as much as the aforementioned two and I know it seems like I'm going off on a tangent but this is relevant to my helping you, I promise!
Much of the comic material I've consumed over the years has degraded in memory - I don't remember most of the issues now, just a few panels and impressions - so I can't help you on the comic-reading front but there should be various accounts here on tumblr that do really good analyses and are much better than me at giving panel-based evidence. (I can think of @hood-ex off the top of my head). Even just searching through the tags of say, the Titans or Batman or the JL or any characters you already have in mind, should turn up at least a handful of comic panels from different issues, if you just want to start by lightly browsing those.
As for certain canon to focus on, the DC fandom is pretty famous for forcing its fans to root through multitudes of conflicting material (so. Many. Reboots.) and authors that have contradicted each other's works over the years, so the only thing I can really tell you is to pick and choose for yourself which pieces of canon you decide feel right for you. I know it's not really all that helpful but I really do recommend just going for the deep-dive and figuring out how to swim from there. Suicidal I know, sounds crazy for sure, but this is a fandom with some serious years under its belt - and all the changing attitudes and cultures that implies - and an excess of material from varying sources.
Young Justice and Teen Titans are both good shows for getting a feel for the world(tho both depict versions just different enough to be distinct in their interpretations) but they mess with canon a fair amount as well, so don't take everything they depict to be same across the board. In this regard, fanfiction actually IS your friend! The more you read, the more you can cross-reference! Even with the bevy of material to choose from, people typically agree on a fair amount of character staples (examples include: Dick Grayson being a very affectionate child, Jason Todd being a literature nerd, Bruce being emotionally-intelligent just...not necessarily acting on it lol) and often times the staples are the ones backed up by the canons.
(I'm not ashamed to admit that much of what's remained in my fickle memory can be attributed to character-realistic, memorable, thought-provoking fanfiction. Fanfiction exists for exploration and, I've found, can at times offer a more grounded, humane take on well-beloved characters that authors being Paid to write sometimes miss out on. Just - always doublecheck the tags and, when reading from authors that are heavily-biased, do your best to widen your exposure to the more objective, as well.)
There's not much else I can think of off the top of my head but my askbox AND my messages are always open if you have any more questions. I'm always down to help a budding fan and, if you ever do want some fic recommendations, I'm down to share links for those too! Thank you again for the lovely ask♥️
(Also, I'm sorry if this didn't do much in terms of providing you with direction but, at the very least, I hope I didn't drive you away.)

Tagged by the lovely @merisalright who manages to make me happy all the time!!! (This is my way of being able to tag 6 people who make me happy.. so deal with it.)
say 5 facts abt myself, tag 5 people that make me happy, and 5 people i’d like to get to kno better!
five facts abt me!
I don’t like chocolate
Every bone I’ve broken, or injury I’ve had, it has occurred twice (except my ACL tear. Which has me nervous- like I’m always waiting for it to snap again.)
I LOVE to cook. My mom actually just got me a kitchen-aid mixer as a grad gift and told me “this way you can make me more macaroons” and like, the bad thing is, I totally will.
Okay, I have a confession. I’ve never actually seen episodes 1-6 of star wars, but by the time the new ones came out I felt too awkward to admit it. There’s enough references in new pop culture that, like, it’s not hard to get by or anything. I have seen two of the new ones with rey and such (and am in STRONG support of finnpoe or whatever those gay space pilot’s ship name is), but not the last one. I may not. Idk. Maybe it’s because of all the years my mom brainwashed me to love star trek and hate star wars. (I do, however, feel like I’ve got a weight lifted off my shoulders by admitting this like WOW. My life is no longer a lie.)
I have been dying my hair since I was 10! Fun colors and natural colors. Currently it’s pink, but that’ll change when school goes back unfortunately. But my true form will always have pink hair, I’ve decided. No matter how much my brown roots peak through lol.
five people that make me happy!
@mmmae-zing bc she’s an amazing friend and an even better person. Also a kick ass nurse who has to put up with a lot of bullshit (including the world falling apart currently.)
@anawkwardbibliophile you’re amazing, kind, and support me in my dumb b99 endeavors and I love you for it.
@angelsfalling16 any time you comment on my teacher fic it makes my heart warm, and seeing you post makes me happy! You’re super amazing wow.
@adamarks I love your comments and your tags, and you always make me laugh! You’re also v loyal and kind and I love to see it!
@theflyingpeach did you know you’re amazing? But really you’re v supportive of everyone and leave kind and well thought out notes. It’s lovely.
OOH another person (sorry I’m not great at following directions) @motherscarf who lets me scream about stuff in messages and always leaves wonderful tags and comments on my shitposts.
five people i’d like to get to know better!
@omgcmere @carryonsimoncarryonbaz @nightimedreamersworld @xivz and @fight-surrender
so if i tagged u anywhere throughout this post, consider urself tagged!!

For the fanfic writer ask thing: 2, 13, 27, 34! Happy Friday!
Happy Friday @st0rmyskies ! Thank you for the asks!!
2. Why do you write fanfiction?
I have a pretty high stress and occasionally emotionally charged job that was spiking into my red zones prior to March 2020 when the screws got tightened, and my job got busier, and everyone got more stressed and all the escape things I did had to stop. I could not go to cons and dressing in cosplay at home feels weird to me. There were no model horse shows, and while the hobby has adapted to photo shows, I have only been able to participate as a judge and again, the social aspect is gone. I could not see my friends and work really became my entire world. I have always told myself that could never happen.
So I threw myself into a thing I’d written just to dump an idea that then became 9,000 words and pantsed it into 88,000 words and wow it was a ride at times but it did get me through some shit when I was angry and sad all at once, and there wasn’t a way to physically burn the crap via competition. I like that the particular sandbox I’m in is very flexible with canon (or not) and seems to welcome remixing and retooling.
I thought I’d be one and done but I managed to make friends as I wrote and it was fun bouncing silly ideas off each other, and experimenting with things to just play with them and I find that I really enjoy this new way to play. I don’t know if I have another novel length thing in me but I do have a couple irons in the fire and I did my first fic exchange and I’ve applied to a couple zines (I’m hoping to hear from the first of these today squeeee!) so I hope that going forward, once the world allows me to cosplay at cons, and pack up a carload of plastic horses and drive 12 hours to meet up with other people with carloads of plastic horses again, I’ll still play with it.
13. First fandom you ever wrote for?
The X Files! The show started the same year I started grad school and I was hooked immediately. I also got online the same year. One day, a fellow fan/classmate told me about a Usenet group where people wrote stories about the X Files and Star Trek!!!! It took several years, but I did write one story and I remember getting it beta read and I don’t think it ever got posted because I also thought it never was finished and then lost as I moved computers.
Then like 3 weeks ago I was digging through my hard drive for something and I found it! And it was done! So I posted it on New Year’s Day, and I am so freaking happy I have it back. Hooray for digital hoarding.
27. What’s the nicest comment you ever received?
It’s hard to pick just one, because I've had a lot that touched me, but this stands out to me. I joined a small discord server that focused on my fandom and posted a link to my then in progress longfic. I wanted people to read it but I was getting frustrated that no one seemed interested-I do a relatively small fandom and everyone wanted to read Marvel and Harry Potter.
I woke up in the morning and someone on the discord said something like “oh hey I’m reading this and no regrets” and then I opened my email and this person had binged the entire thing I had at that point and commented on every chapter. I was terrified because I had been crossposting to fanfiction dot net and already had some kinda mean anonymous people who I could not interact with. These comments though were gentle and encouraging and picked out things I’d written and praised them and I went from being completely terrified to realizing I’d probably found my people.
I do like it when people tell me they thought Old!Link would be boring or weird but they tried it anyway and ended up loving it.
34. Copy and paste an excerpt you’re particularly fond of
This is the end of chapter 14 of the long fic. I like it because it’s a point where Link is starting to clumsily grapple with the trauma of his life, though it’s not going well for him. He is making decisions that don’t serve him well, and make him more upset. He is angry at his lot and starting to lash out at people who want to support and help him, and idk it was delicious to write this.
Plus I am also happy with how my version of the Arbiter’s Grounds came out because I have not played that bit of Twilight Princess yet.
“Hylia, have you tired of sending children in your stead? Are you sending an old man in your name now?”
The voice has a smokey texture to it he didn’t hear in his dreams. He swivels his head, looking for the source. He has done this before, and he knows what is next. He wrenches the sword out of the skull, and slides to the floor.
He is ready.
“Who do you think you are? Do you really think you are worthy of that tunic you wear?”
He snarls “You can decide after we dance. Let’s go.”
There’s a throaty laugh in response. Link stands his ground, relaxing his hips and knees in preparation to fight. He rolls his right wrist, giving the Master Sword a showy flip. The blade is glowing and he can feel a low thrum through his arm. He hears the faint sound of glass breaking somewhere.
“Not today, old man. Not today.”
“But soon.”
And like that, the presence is gone, and it’s just him and a giant pile of dead bone. He thinks there’s a flash of light on the corner of his vision and when he turns to it, there’s a wooden box that he is sure was not there before. Inside that; the red, heart shaped crystal and an enormous topaz. He scoops them up, pausing as the red crystal restores him. Using the hook shot once more to get out of the pit, he then heads out into the desert night; back to Gerudo.
It’s cold; and the sky is a deep, dark blue, filled with pinpoints of light. He pauses once to look up and name the constellations. The Wind Fish. Aquamentus. Creatures from stories. He catches himself wondering if she is looking up at the night sky and naming the same stars. He pushes on. None of this seems fair, suddenly.
He is back at the gates at dawn. The guards eye him, wondering how much trouble he is going to be. He feels like a toxic combination of tired and frustrated and angry. He feels like he might be trouble.
He barks at them. “Tell the queen of Hyrule her hero is at the gates for her.”

talk to the hand [ TIMOTHEE CHALAMET ], [ REED ‘NEWT’ NEWTON ] is the new kid on the block around here. at [ TWENTY ], the [ CIS BOY] works at [ BABBAGE’S ] in the mall and, like, [ HE ] totally reminds us of [ CHANDLER BING ]. oh snap! what? their favorite movie is [ HOME ALONE ]???? so is mine!
ABOUT THE MUN.  i used to lie to y’all, my mom didn’t say no, i did
i hate this site man. and that’s it, that’s all you gotta know about me.
BIO. good news!!!! i’ve successfully replaced all my emotions with jokes !!!! tw bullying
reed newton was born in london england to sylvia anne bixby and cornelius otis newton and honestly, he’s regretted it ever since.
newt was an accident. he was the product of one of his mother and father’s first ever lustful encounters, and their subsequent shotgun wedding so honestly they both spent most of newt’s formative years in the honeymoon period. some of newt’s earlier memories are of him walking in on his parents doing the devil’s tango in the broom closet and his nanny rushing to cover his eyes. good times.
honestly newt walked in on his parents doing the do more times than any kid should have before the age of nine. and then he walked in on a parent doing the do with a non parent. in other words newt got an eyeful of his father and the pool boy and it wasn’t long after that that his parents went through a long and messy divorce. once again, good times.
his mother decided to pack up their things and move herself and her nine year old very impressionable son to nebraska, because fuck that kid amiright. newt was quickly designated as the skinny weird nerdy kid with glasses and a funny little accent, and so as you can guess he was pretty mercilessly bullied from age nine to eighteen. he really never stood a chance.
i feel like this is a good time to mention that newt’s mother was a sex therapist, which is not the same as a regular therapist but still, therapist is in the name. he should have been able to talk to his parent in this time of strife and get some level of support right? nope. sylvia bixby is well known for writing a men are from mars, women are from venus like book on communication and dating and all that, so his mom was generally on book tour after book tour. but maybe she would have been supportive if she was ever actually around, right? again, nope.
unbeknownst to newt whenever his mother was around she was not only just casually psycho analyzing her only child for shits and giggles, no, she as also writing about it. newt’s mother wrote an entire book about raising a highly repressed teenage son with newt as the star, and you can only guess what that did for newt’s stellar high social status in high school. nothing great.
did newt ask her not to publish it once he realized she had wrote it? yes. did she still publish it? also yes. so newt and his mother no longer have the greatest relationship. holidays are awkward.
things were not better on his fathers end, but it wasn’t because his father particularly did anything nearly as tone deaf as his mother. yes, his father was a famous erotica novelist and yes that made newt’s life a living hell, but newt luckily wasn’t the subject of those books. neil transitioned from writing fabio like novels to writing some lgbt fiction which, great for representation, horrible for your teenage son who is now known around school for having a dad who writes porn. to top it off, neil ended up starting a long term relationship with the pool boy and gaining a pseudo step son from it. benjamin caley was not only more athletic than newt, not only more attractive than newt, but also better than newt in every single way imaginable which was a real self esteem booster. his father actively prefers benji and every time newt visits him in england over the summers he comes home hating himself a bit more.
which works out because after the book being published, most people kind of hated newt too so at the very least he was on trend. there was a lot of classic nineties bullying you know, wedgies, swirlies, shoving newt into lockers. all very cliche. newt would tell his bullies as much, but it never really went over that well.
but then finally newt graduated. he was free from the hell that was the public education system and his childhood household. he graduated with honours, moved out of his mother’s house, and got himself his own apartment with a roommate near the mall where he got his first real job.
goes to university for software engineering. has an internship at apple that he’s absolutely terrified to mess up. has an old beat up car that was like the first big purchase he ever made with his own money, so he loves it to death even though it’s a piece of shit.
PERSONALITY.  do you fear me? don’t feel so special now. i have social anxiety. i fear everybody.
this is my first time playing newt so all of this is subject to change BUT
INSECURE. newt is a weird mix of cripplingly insecure and weirdly confident and there is no in between ever.
WITTY.  humour is and always will be the only defense newt has against anything, so he makes a lot of jokes especially when he feels uncomfortable.
EMPATHETIC. newt is a big push over when it comes to emotions like he would never do anything to hurt someone unless it was by accident or he was provoked or you’re his step brother benji or either of his parents in which case he will run you over with his car on sight. but no really, if newt is in a position where he has to hurt somebody he will do absolutely everything in his power to either not or avoid the situation completely.
AWKWARD. sometimes honestly, although it depends on the day. v clumsy though. usually he can try to make his awkwardness funny but does he always succeed? the answer is no.
HEADCANNONS.  actually all of my systems are nervous.
has to drink like six cups of coffee or tea a day. very serious about his tea because english. also has vegemite on his toast.
can actually cook pretty well even though he prefers to eat takeout. cooks because it’s cheaper and he’s a broke ass student yk. won’t take money from his parents ever, and will straight up give it away if it’s forced upon him.
writes star trek fanfic for fun and has a kind of weird relationship with writing because of his parents honestly?? but he enjoys it so, maybe the apple in fact does not fall from the tree.
has commitment issues because of his parents divorce but don’t we all.
developed a stutter after all the divorce drama because he thought it was his fault. he later had to see a speech therapist. his mother later had a fwb relationship with this same speech therapist. newt wanted to die.
traded his glasses for contacts and you will literally only see newt in glasses if he rips or loses his contacts or if he’s at home.
in love with all things sci fi, will rent and see every sci movie ever made if he can
accidentally knocks down at least one display in babbages per day so there’s that.
speaking of newt runs a small side gig out of babbages where he fixes up tech because paying for university, rent, and car insurance out of pocket gets up there. so if you need someone to fix your desktop newt is your guy.
is actually a pretty good flirt when he’s drunk or feels comfortable. is constantly teetering between painfully insecure and confident.
is very bi and very hesitant about it because of his father and all his feelings towards that, but he will eventually stop fighting it so much soon hopefully. has probably had a few drunken hookups with guys but tries to convince himself that is just a drunk thing yk.
is allergic to bees so death has a kiss just for him i guess.
loves video games but that goes without saying
has anxiety and takes medication for it, one of the few healthy things his mother has ever done for him.
speaking of his mother if newt ever sees her book about him in a book display he will spend as much time as needed taking each book and hiding them in obscure places so that no one will ever be able to find them and buy them. he read the whole thing because he had to know and yep he absolutely hates it.
goes by newt and only newt so that no one can make the connection between him and his mother or his father upon first meeting him or hopefully ever. a lot of the kids he went to high school with still know though and with the accent and everything, he’s not fooling anyone who has at least heard a rumour
idk what else y’all imma fite tumblr for making me write this twice
WANTED CONNECTIONS.  actually wait, i take that self deprecation back, i’m great.
ROOMMATE. because newt can’t afford his place on his own between all his expenses. please. think of the shenanigans.
ON AGAIN OFF AGAIN THING. kind of inspired by chandler and janice tbh. these two are pretty incompatible and whenever they’re together all they talk about is breaking up with each other but whenever they’re broken up and they see each other they somehow always find themselves waking up in bed together the next morning. it’s a mess.
NERD SQUAD. give me newt’s friends from high school please and thanks. just a crew of absolutely dweebs and misfits.
FWB/EWB. self explanatory considering newt’s big commitment issues but i just imagine like making out in the back room and like hooking up in the break room and someone leaving like a damning article of clothing in there and the two of them scrambling to get it before anyone notices. just fun.
EX. self explanatory but yes, an ex gf or bf, an ex fwb or ewb, give me all the exes please.
REPEAT CUSTOMER. this person is always paying newt to come fix their computer and other tech and newt just doesn’t understand how they mess it up so badly. like he doesn’t get how or why technology hates them as much as it does, but he’ll take the money.
HATESHIP. just good old fashion animosity. could be hate from school or the fresh hate upon working in the mall together or they can just be newt’s least favourite customer and he can hate them for that.
CRUSH. maybe newt had a crush on them in school. maybe they had a crush on newt in school. maybe newt has a crush on them now. maybe they have a crush on newt now.
and anything else tbh. i’d love a smoking buddy for newt, a friend who he can never get any work done around like when they’re together they’re just like !!!, someone who used to be one of the popular kids who he is now getting along with or still holding a grudge against, his big gay awakening in school maybe like the first masc person he had a crush on, someone who tries to get newt to party and come out of his shell, someone who idk steals from babbages skjsdj idk man i am open to anything at all so just like this and we can brain storm if anything!
