aro week 2024 reading challenge (with recommendations!)

i decided to only read books with arospec character during aro week, so i created a little challenge for it on storygraph! come join if you'd like <3

some recommendations (books that i have already read) under the cut! (this is by no means exhaustive, and there are a lot of books with characters that are both aro and ace bc i tend to read a lot of those. would love to hear your recommendations bc i do want to diversify what i read as well!)

main characters:

the priory of the orange tree & a day of fallen night (samantha shannon) - LOVE these books so much. both have a main pov character that is aroace. not explicitly labeled in the story bc it's fantasy but especially in adofn, it's really clear

vespertine (margaret rogerson) - ya, aroace mc, not explicitly stated on page but it's obvious imho

loveless (alice oseman) - is anybody surprised

tarnished are the stars (rosiee thor - all books have arospec characters) - ya, aroace MC, not one of my favorites but the rep is nice

common bonds - a short story collection with arospec characters everywhere (my favorites were "discography" & "a full deck")

the thread that binds (cedar mccloud) - this just the definition of cozy fantasy for me. multiple arospec characters (sorry i don't remember the actual identities and can't find info), qpr, found family, and so much more (there's also a prequel out now but i haven't read that one yet)

werecockroach (blake polenth) - idk what to say about this, cockroaches kidnap everyone except the mc and friends, aroace + agender mc

hazel's theory of evolution (lisa jenn bigelow) - middle grade, aroace mc but it's not the focus, really heartwarming "wish i had this when i was a kid" vibes

two dark moons & three seeking stars (avi silver) - ya, i LOVE these books, aroallo mc & found family but with lizards

baker thief (claudie arseneault - all books have arospec characters) - aroallo genderfluid mc, wasn't a big fan of the story but i really liked the characters

by your side (margherita scialla) - a queerplatonic short story, i'm not the biggest fan of short stories but it's about two people deciding to be in a qpr

convenience store woman (sayaka murata) - i'm not really sure if the mc is supposed to be aroace but that's how i read it. it's supposed to be funny but i thought it was depressing as fuck lol

elatsoe (darcie little badger) - ya, aroace native mc (it only explicitly says she's ace tho), this one was a lot of fun, it's basically a murder mystery in a really interesting world

goddess of the hunt (eileen shelby) - poetry collection about aroace artemis (we stan)

summer of salt (katrina leno) - ya, very minor aroace character

sorcery of thorns & the mysteries of thorn manor (margaret rogerson) - ya, minor aro (aroace?) character (i have a special weakness for margaret rogerson bc i was at her book signing and told her i appreciated her writing aro/ace characters, and she wrote "aro/ace pride" in with my dedication lol)

aces wild (amanda dewitt) - ya, aroace sc, i LOVE him you don't understand. this is about a group of ace teens but gabe is my favorite, i would die for him. also i need amanda dewitt to write a million other books about these characters

hell followed with us (andrew joseph white) - ya, very minor aro character but this book is BRILLIANT, everybody should read it (after reading the trigger warnings)

wren martin ruins it all (amanda dewitt) - ya, mc is ace so that's the focus, but there's a side character who doesn't use labels and isn't interested in dating at all

a grim and sunken vow (ashley shutterworth) - ya, this is the third book in the series, demiromantic sc, absolutely loved his storyline (he appears in the first books as well but i hated him lmao)

and books i haven't read yet but am hoping to read during aro week (i'm therefore not 100% sure this information is correct):

city of strife (claudie arseneualt) - is supposed to have multiple arospec characters

every bird a prince (jenn reese) - middle grade, aroace mc

archivist wasp (nicole kornher-stace) - aroace mc, no romance

the black veins (ashia monet) - apparently no love interests!!! sounds like a dream

fallen thorns (harvey oliver baxter) - aroace mc

Tfw you're daydreaming about being in an interview for a book you never got around to writing and now you really want to read it but oops it doesn't exist but at least the author seems cool

#no it would have been a very angsty im in middle school and im SO full of angst and run on sentences and I like edward cullen and the fae #and also I don't know how to separate or transition ideas so theyre all gonna be smashed together versions of my favorite books type thing #to be fair I started the idea around middle school so #no but the amount of 'huh that's probably not a good sign mentally' things I put in it #idk how people dedicate books to their family when I would die if my family ever saw any of my wips #if I ever actually write/publish anything its definitely gonna be under a pseudonym for sure #at least the main characters are all nonbinaries and or slightly magic and or a really big wolf who is a mother hen #god the tumblr posts about how they had potential or the book was problematic or oh god the horney fangirls for my emo mc #the fanart of the mc and their best friend the fae wolf who the interview revealed could turn into a humanoid but only in faerie #the interview also revealed that the main characters name was main character y/n shortened to maich ryan / ryan maich #anyways I mean ive seen worse things published im just too lazy to write it/ remember more than a basic plot and some cool scenes #I would however be wildly amused by messing with the fandom if I did write it and it did gain a fandom #i had some cool ideas for the format but i never would have handled it properly #there was some stuff that would've needed a lot of research and not just the places that the mcs traveled to #like the book would've been formatted like ur the mc/in mcs head like first person right but mc always refers to themselves as 'we' mentally #and it's eventually revealed that you (reader) are like. an alternate personality right but I have no clue how to not do that... poorly #anyways maich (make) has been through some stuff and i didn't want to write poor representation yknow? a middle schoolers idea of how #how some of that would affect a person was really inaccurate but also imperative to the plot unfortunately #eventually I'll do enough research that I can make a good reworked version probably maybe idk its sorta cringe in general lol but #but I really want to write about the characters #-well about the mother hen magic wolf that adopts a useless gremlin who won't take care of themselves #also it was going to be a romance between the two human mcs but I had no idea what a romance really looked like from the inside so it ended #ended up being a really homoerotic best friendship thing that was very awkward and also maich dies at the end #then the interview reveals that wolf actually dragged maich back to faerie before they died but maich thinks they're dead but! #they live happily ever after basically #see bc the story made me sad that maich dies for other mc at the end so i made it less an allegory for trying ur hardest and still failing #and more an allegory for like. cutting ties and just moving somewhere new if you have too many bad memories but now you get to be #a forest cryptid with ur dog and sometimes talk to a bitchy tree lady and her wife the river. also for no reason whatsoever the moon and sun #are brothers and fall for maich and they get chased away by wolf and that's why wolves howl at the moon it's to keep dumb gods from their #best bros. also wolf used to run with the wild hunt I don't make the rules

noriko being 24/7 horny was surprising. like wow all of the stuff i saw she did out of context was 100% equally horny in context as it was out of context. love that for her

i didnt think the 'andy + slavery' thing was handled as badly as everyone made it out to be when telling me about it. tho from the way it was talked about i had kind of figured the conflict between andy and nile re: slavery would be really racially charged (esp considering nile is a black american and would obvs have Thoughts on the subject in that regard) but like,, done in a cringey 'a-white-guy-obviously-wrote-it' kind of way? but it wasnt that. i mean. it makes sense that andy would be implicit in slavery through the years

i mean, like she says, is that not what people just did to each other in the aftermath of battles for thousands of years? and i really like how its pointed out that it was what she was raised with (in the beginning when you see her put shackles on that guy after the battle) but she also accepts responsibility for it and acknowledges that it was wrong and not just 'what people did'.

i like how from her expressions you can kind of tell baby andy knew it was off but she sets those feelings aside bc she felt angry. it explains how she felt but didnt make her out to be blameless in it. plus i mean. i dont know, the fact that andy was involved in a lot of morally shady stuff for 7000 years is not that wild for me. if you live that long youre just Going to be involved in some shit, and she didnt even have other immortals with her as positive community influences, she literally just did whatever the fuck she wanted for thousands of years

it was also extremely funny bc that was like 60% of their contribution to the whole comic, besides kidnapping copley. they came, they wrote some fanfic, they left. kings. at least in tog1 they had an excuse to be useless bc they got kidnapped

joe just found out his old friend who he thought was dead is alive (and also probably wants to murder them) and instead of investigating with andy he stopped to help nile up. champ.

on that note imo copley was. weirdly enough, more interesting in fm than in tog1. to me at least. the fact that andy let him live and he was so haunted by what had happened that he came back and sought them out despite knowing they would likely kill him for it bc he wanted to not only make up for what hed done but also to tell them what theyd done for the world was admittedly more interesting than andy just kind of drafting him to the cause and him going 'okie'

i like how nicky was drawn in this one. in opening fire he looks like a blob man but in fm he looks more like a very nice grampa with a very good dye job

copley trying to talk to andy while she was like o_o at him was great

ive hit the picture limit but id seen that panel where nicky goes 'forgive me' as he kills a guy out of context and it was HILARIOUSLY anticlimactic for me to discover that there was literally no context to it. nicky just apologizes to random people he kills. i thought that guy was someone he knew or something. nope its just Some Guy that nicky didnt know from adam

nile's complaint that andy was especially brutal to the guys on the boat... i mean. . , how exactly does one kill a man with an axe and not be brutal about it?

it was funny how noriko kissed andy and the only people who seemed surprised by that were nile and also andy

nicky and joe's complete non-reaction to finding out noriko is alive And Evil Now is endlesly funny. they just left her on that boat and neither cared. i get book and nile not caring but joe and nicky knew her, and they just have 0 input on the subject of what to do with her

i dont know, i get why people didnt like the ending but its. .. . it makes more sense in the comicverse. bc the squad doesnt really. .. interact outside of jobs? i mean, think of the moon landing story in ttt. that was booker and joe and nicky doing a job and andy only showed up a for a couple minutes after it was done. or the brunch in the first issue of opening fire. the squad arent as tight in the comic, and andy often seems to do her own thing outside of work, so andy saying 'i dont want to do work anymore' and the squad being like 'alright bye then' makes more sense in this universe than the movie one

also i feel like greg was Trying to set up a thing where nile becomes the Leader of The Squad after andy dies but like. its not very well done since. . . i mean, nile hasnt spoken to booker since opening fire, (and she only knew him A Day). and shes known joe and nicky all that time, but there isnt really anything that indicates that they have any relationship at all, much less one that's grown. in all the comicverse the only time nile and nicky speak is in FM, and in that scene nicky tells nile about noriko. nile goes from someone who needs to be set aside to have background knowledge explained to her to being the Leader of the group with nothing in between. it kind of... comes out of nowhere.

on the other hand tho... i felt really bad for andy thru the whole thing. well, i always felt bad for andy, but in this one she seemed so miserable, especially since it really felt like none of the others actually.... cared about her. when noriko came back no one asked andy how she was doing (big question ik, but it wouldve showed they cared at least), nobody ever expressed any concern for her, no one even really seemed to want to be around her. in opening fire everyone was more distant than in the movie of course, but there were little moments where she would joke with joe, or nicky would try and comfort her, or stuff like that, but in FM it really felt like they just didnt really care about her. & in opening fire it felt a lot like andy's relationship with nile breathed some new life into her, but in FM it felt like all they did was argue. i get theyre not *as* close in the comics but it really felt like the only person who cared about andy at all was noriko (which was probably also how andy felt) but it just seemed to come out of nowhere. honestly i was reading and i was honestly agreeing with andy that she might just be better off if she did just die. opening fire, on the other hand, never make me feel that way

tho everyone made it sound like when the squad split up it was one of those cursed 'the found family leaves each other at the end of the journey' tropes. but guys i mean,,, this is the second installment out of three. that isnt the End. theyll come back in the third one and Dramatically Reunite to fight some baddies (probably those 'others' noriko mentioned). im guessing yitzhak fits into that too somehow.

anyways it wasnt That Bad but it made me kind of sad and the only Sweet Found Family vibes in it were when they saved booker. also they shouldve beefed up that nilemoose romance, it underwhelmed me. 6.5/10

i also ABSOLUTELY understand all of greg's comments about how you couldnt make FM directly into a movie, he always said that it had no plot and. i get it now. it really didnt have a plot sdfghjkl

if you’re in gryffindor you think you’re more “refined” than everyone else, and if you’re in ravenclaw you think everyone’s a stiff

this is the person with the braincell! let it be known that they have it, but refuse to use it

they have to be a little chaotic because they know what consequences are but disregard them

these people call themselves ambiverts but it really just means they won’t talk to you if they hate you

and i say that lovingly

okay, but if they do talk to you??? best people to talk with - they can hold an interesting conversation masterfully and it’s all because their enthusiasm is off the charts

let them ramble, it’s very endearing.

and physical touch is probably their love language so cuddle with them, too

they’re sci-fi and superhero nerds change my mind

now their loyalty is really interesting because gryffindors are really loyal where as a ravenclaws are individualistic and prioritize #1, so i feel like they are very much on guard

befriending is hard - they’ll keep you at bay until they are sure you can be trusted. and they won’t be made to feel bad about it either.

but once you are close to them,,,,, they would save you or die trying

their inside jokes are god tier

i don’t know how they do it other than they know how to make people laugh using the most unexpected methods and because it was such a weird experience, people are able to remember really well?

like, they could say “nutmeg” and everyone around you starts laughing, meanwhile you’re just ???

gryffinclaws are also really interesting because they don’t do well with conflict, but drama sort of gravitates toward them because let’s be real here, they can kind of be actively seeking it out, sometimes.

i mean, it’s usually to avoid having to deal with deeper emotions or even bigger problems, but sometimes they have a hand in their own suffering....

also, these people never study if they don’t like the class. they don’t. if they dislike the subject, they procrastinate with every fibre of their being.

but if it’s something they love, they are the first to get it done and will 100% do extra research and talk about it all the time.

they say they love both cats and dogs equally, and they actually mean it.

they are most likely concerned with wanting to change the world in some way - but they want it to be a tangible way that still allows for creativity and freedom

this is also the friend who stays up wayyyyyyy too late, and when you ask them what they’re doing, all they can say is “memes”

and they really do love memes - send them some. it’s their primary way of communicating

they love going out to get lunch and chatting with friends

food + people = love

they’ll even do it in their room! just bring bread and a good conversation - they can stay up for hours

also,,,, creativity and courage??? these are the people who actually have the confidence to publish their writing/art/whatever, and i admire that.

point is, they want to be outside, doing things

they most likely want to make change in this world, but on a smaller level - with the people they care about, or the place they live

they really want to see what this world has to offer, but they are deathly afraid of being lonely

ngl, they probably get hurt by people a lot. they’re a little too trusting and go in a little too deep and when that other person leaves it does irrevocable damage.

it’s kind of like idealism and optimism, but at what cost?

100% smother their own feelings with a pillow and then preoccupy themself with the problems of others to not deal with their own

get them someone to talk to, please. they deserve it.

most likely they are an extrovert and surround themself with people so that they won’t have to feel loss as hard

spoiler alert: loss is always crushing.

gryffinpuffs believe in people - it’s their greatest gift and worst downfall

and they cannot live without them

do they have the braincell? sometimes. most of the time they share it and forget to ask for it back.

they probably like to do tangible things - like sculpture or knitting, baking, caring for plants....

something they can hold close

and if they read, they 100% finish books in one sitting. they just binge and it’s very iconic of them

probably a romantic, idk

they want a meet cute in real life and read all of the marriage fanfics

gryffindor/slytherin:

now these are the people who smile when you call them a bastard

and are most likely to be called a bastard unlovingly

at first glance they might be a little low on the empathy scales, but if you make it into their circle they would kill, die, and resurrect themself for you

BUT! all things come with a cost.

these are your friends with shifting loyalties. they are loyal until they feel your loyalty toward them fade, and they can and will shift against you for self preservation.

and they won’t feel bad about where their loyalties lie.

but please love them because if you really do believe in them they will feel it and it will rock their whole world

and if your feelings are strong, you’ll be surprised how quickly they can turn to you for guidance

if you haven’t noticed, this group is extremely intuitive - they can just sense what everyone feels about them

all that intuition... and quite a lot of tact

maybe it’s the cunning or the self preservation in them, but they can read a room really well - only bested by the hufflepuff/slytherin - and can sway everyone to their side

you want someone to give oddly accurate motivational speeches? this is the person you’re looking for!

slytherdors.... you either love them or you hate them

but no joke these are the people that the gryffinclaws and slytherclaws are constantly fighting - and the slytherdor is ready to throw hands at any given moment, someone pLEASE send a ravenpuff (huffleclaw?) to save them

if you wanted someone to embody teenage angst, HERE YOU GO!

it’s either that or they are extremely competitive and not afraid to call someone out

if there’s a dueling club, someone please put restraints on these children

as you can imagine, these people have a lot going on, and what they really need is just some quiet stability.

they need to see this world isn’t constantly out to get them.

they absolutely love music, so listen to songs with them! they have the best spotify playlists with the most obscure vibes, and it’s very aesthetically pleasing

also! listen to them in any group setting - they make the best, dry comments under their breath

if you laugh at them they will reach into the heavens and give you the moon and the stars

they really want the ~found family~ and definitely seek it out

they crave redemption arcs

they give me baby wolf vibes - they are wild killers, but they’re at that tender age where they’re still vvv similar to a puppy, when given affection

their slytherin side has tamed the impulsivity of a gryffindor, but the level of tactician a slytherdor is varies wildly. you never know what you’re going to get, and they are actually really good at covering it up

kind of like on those alignment charts where it’s like “looks like they could kill you but is a cinnamon roll” except it’s “seems competent, but is really an idiot”

they really need an animal companion, probably a cat or tarantula

the slytherdor probably doesn’t feign to study - they either do or they don’t and if that’s bad for their mental health then they’ll fight god himself

i get a lot of vibes of zuko screaming at the sky in that lightning storm, where he’s like, “come on, strike me! you’ve never held back before!”

maybe i’ve been a little negative, but uh,,,, their love language is sitting in the dark, holding hands and talking about the lamest part of their day

also, they hate meaningless endings to tv shows - they just want to see everyone be happy or die trying

ravenclaw/hufflepuff:

you mean the adjusted ravenclaw?

maybe that was mean, but what i really mean is that they are the most emotionally intelligent of all the ravenclaws

these ravenclaws know how to use conflict resolution skills, and they are very much needed in ravenclaw tower

they’ve been coaching the gryffindor/ravenclaws, but good luck maintaining their attention if they don’t want to listen

they also have patience! that means they get along well with slytherins.

even if they’re tired, they’re a good sport about it

light academia aesthetic, or just soft vibes in general.

they are probably the only artists with a coherent schedule that they keep up on, while still remembering to stay hydrated and function like a normal human being

they lowkey crave structure - the unexpected is not for them

riddles? those have a right and wrong answer - they absolutely hate it when the gryffindor/ravenclaws or ravenclaw/slytherins give an answer that is “technically” right

they probably don’t tell anyone, though

passive-aggression? yep. i can feel them seething from here.

like, they can solve minor problems and can get over bigger ones in time, but if it’s a huge slight, they are never going to let go

and it’s super palpable when they dislike you because they are so kind to everyone else

they probably have a passion for poetry but can’t seem to write any themself

definitely still keep a book of it hidden under their bed, though

and if they are good they vehemently deny it but continue to write anyway

the biggest thing they struggle with is knowing their direction in life - who do they want to be?

abstract thinking is an art form, and these ravenclaws ponder existence in the most intangible ways you’ve ever seen

10/10 lay on the ground and stare at the ceiling for like 3 hours straight

they can vary wildly on the introvert-extrovert scale, but they are never in the middle. extremes only.

you can get close to them out with acts of service - they give so much, please just treat them ONCE

they attach themself to so many people, though. even if they’re an introvert, you’d be surprised with their connections.

they’re so level headed and yet, they can feel so lost

kind of reminds me of 50′s moms who seem perfect on the outside but have existential crises while making a roast in heels

they don’t necessarily want to be “known” - they probably feel like that definition is changing all of the time, so it would scare them to put themself in a box

i guess they’re kind of free spirits - maybe more like the aunt who does yoga with baby goats and collects crystals and pretty shells

they are great at conflict resolution, yes, but don’t expect them to be your therapist (that’s the hufflepuff/slytherin)

they have absolutely no idea when it comes to deep feelings - they barely understand their own

probably paints, tbh, or at the very least loves to go to museums w/ really abstract art.

they actually have the braincell! they keep it a lot of the time and can be stingy with it.

they either wake up really early in the morning or stay up until the sun rises because it gives them “clarity” or something.

ravenclaw/slytherin:

they’re definitely the blunt friend who will just say things as they see them

yeah, tact is lost on them

they also love to claim that they “don’t need” people, so they butt heads with the hufflepuff/slytherin and the ravenclaw/hufflepuff a lot

they have quite a bit of stratagem up their sleeve, so people can be weary of them

their attitude does nothing to solve this, but it could also be that the slytherclaw has this idea that flattery gets them nowhere

they are so divisive in their individualism,,, good luck befriending them

but if you do befriend them, you have a powerful friend in your corner.

they are 100% that distant relative that you think hates you but you aren’t sure if that’s just the way they are

while slytherclaws may not be very persuasive on their own, they actually work really well in teams. they know everyone’s strengths are are unafraid to take charge and tell people what needs to be done and how

they’re also really good at logical thinking, so you definitely want to be lab partners with this one

and schoolwork? they do it and they take good notes. a really great student

and their ambitions and competitiveness means they are unafraid to go far, and they will do it in style, too

this is the epitome of dark academia. 

and there is very little that is chaotic when it comes to them - the slytherclaw is an excellent planner

maybe they desire more out of life - they never feel like they are quite getting what they want

they are cynical, but they they have such high hopes for this world

when they are let down, they’re not surprised but disenchanted nonetheless

they ponder the meaning of the world and what this world could be far more than they ponder their own life

they tend to see a bigger, more sweeping picture

100% they love the odyssey and definitely think it’s better than the iliad

they adore high fantasy with every fibre of their being and can really get into period dramas

i would say that a gryffindor/ravenclaw would be a good friend for them - we all know a gryffinclaw can talk, and sometimes a slytherclaw just needs to hear someone else’s take on this world

and, of course, it helps when anyone shows appreciation

okay, but they love sweets - chocolate, liquorice, peppermint, caramel... it’s one of the few childish things they allow themself to have.

they are actually relatively quick to trust? the fastest slytherin, actually

they keep their group small, but they get vibes about people and once you show them loyalty they trust you entirely.

i suppose they guess you don’t have any games because they don’t have any

ooh, but if you betray them??? they are a mess, emotionally, and will not hesitate to lash out.

but they are caring in their own way, and will do little things like reminding you to drink water or bringing you toast if you haven’t eaten and it’s very sweet

hufflepuff/slytherin:

so i know we have this idea of the slytherin sweetheart, but a slytherpuff is so much more than that

one of their strongest traits is the intersection of ambition and hard work - they will not stop until they are the best (in their mind at least)

it’s almost a petty form of competition. a bit of schadenfreude when they win.

and everyone’s immediate thought is that a hufflepuff/slytherin would be the most trusting slytherins but no.

not even close.

slytherpuffs are guarded at first, while holding a secret soft spot for you in their heart. but they won’t act on it until they are 100% sure you won’t hurt them. they are suspicious, but really want to like people.

it takes a lot to break down their walls, but when you do they already have a steady foundation for your trust to grow on, and it’s the strongest thing in this world

because of this they can often come off as cold or distant, but once you’re in their circle, oh yeah. there’s the hufflepuff qualities you were searching for.

a good contender for the mom friend position, but they aren’t overt enough to be so.

they’re not getting into your business or being slightly invasive like real mom friends, but if you need advice or a hug,,,,, this is the friend to go to.

they’re like the nice aunt. vvv comforting, but only if sought out.

oh, they have the strongest moral code i have ever seen - it cannot be shaken or swayed.

but! it can often go against the rules, so you do have a bit of chaos working beneath the surface.

i 100% believe that their love language is quality time, and most of that can be spent quietly, just sitting in the other’s presence.

i feel like 90% of their conversations is hand gestures or subtle facial expressions, so it make take a while to be able to read them, but it also means they are soooo good at reading other people

seriously, if you need a therapist in the group, this is your person. they know people so well. their intuition is off the charts.

BUT ALSO,,,, their levels of introvertedness are sky high. i feel like this is a given, but they can be in your orbit for 5 months and speak to your twice and think that is a decent amount of exposure.

please get them an extrovert. they need the exposure.

sEcReTS??? this slytherin probably has some, but you have to be like at level 50 to unlock their tragic backstory

they also have academia vibes and do really well in school work, but whether or not it’s dark academia or light academia is disputed. maybe grey academia? (is that a thing?)

they struggle with wanting to be known and yet wanting to hide parts of themself they find unattractive or unwanted

probably feel like they’re pulled in too many directions and overthink their choices just a bit too much.

everyone knows they have the braincell, but whether or not they use it is unsure

it’s so easy for their friends to coax them, they probably give it to someone else and never ask for it back even though they should be in sole custody of it

So i was re-reading network effect while the power was out and also trying to catch updates to the liu sang AO3 tag and it just struck me that those two together are such a similar vibe

like the way fandom writes liu sang (thinking of @foxofninetales' intersection and especially the beginning scene of @kholran's i will go now to my pyre is what sparked the comparison for me) it's frequently as someone who's experienced a lack of personhood in his life: he's been trafficked, kidnapped, treated as an unwanted burden by his parents, left to die, treated as a thing, often as a kind of human tool, if not in the present in the fic then in his past

what people want him for is for what he can do for them, his own feelings on the matter irrelevant. that's part of what makes him prickly, cynical, and remote

and his attitude (in the beginning of the show, in fics) just reminds me so much of murderbot, of murderbot's internal thoughts. the same resignation to people not really seeing them as a person, the same attempted emotionless facade, the mental eye-rolling when dealing with clients who don't respect or acknowledge their expertise, the very idea of letting their walls down enough to make a friend *scoff* or entertaining the thought that others could care for them, trust them, allow them to trust in turn, and in the end the same ultimate dedication to assist and protect the people they've chosen as their own

literally - with murderbot's background of being used as a toy soldier, sometimes as an amusement (friendly fire), witnessing awful things its clients did, unable to do anything about it, being used as a murder weapon against its will, all the things that made it hack its governor module so it couldn't be used that way again - murderbot basically is fanon liu sang, that drive for independence that marks 'grown-up' liu sang in fics is one of the main recurring tenets of his character in most of the english-language stories - even in just the smutty ones it's written into his background, nodded to in headcanons

and so also what struck me was just how well dmbj would translate into something like a space adventure: instead of tombs they could easily be exploring abandoned planets, colonies, space stations a la network effect or a ton of video games. searching for legendary treasures, facing twisted puzzles, deathly traps, and bizarre monsters, only their gear would include spacesuits and it would be raiders of the lost ark in space instead of raiders of the lost ark in 21st century china. the nine families would be powerful corporate entities like basich-estarza or political entities like preservation (wangs as graycris?)

bc this comparison makes me want liu sang in a situation like he is in the show, like murderbot is in the first book - brought in by clients to do specific work and then trying and failing to maintain a personal distance and semblance of self-preservation when things start going off the rails (just like in sound of the providence, just like in all systems red)

and something in me doesn't want him as a construct, a secunit, but as a regular human - even better: an augmented human, but his hearing isn't a result of augmentation, it's natural, but he lets people think that's what it is bc explaining that he has implanted extra memory storage or a system feed processing augment or something instead would be too much to explain, clients don't need to know unless it will affect him doing his job. maybe he's a 'corporate asset' (property) kind of the same way @foxofninetales' "huli jing" is in the fic

and then the iron triangle - like, i could easily see zhang qiling as a "rogue" secunit - missing pieces of his memories from when his owners decided they were too incriminating? from repeated 'catastrophic failures' while rescuing wu xie over and over again? wu xie as the "innocent, naive" scion of a prominent family in a preseservation-like planetary system. and pangzi as always his boon companion, maybe born in corporate space? from a family that's part of like one of the academic entities like art's university research crew, except he likes adventures (and new profit streams) too much so he hooks in with wu "never met a trip that couldn't go explosively sideways" xie to do salvage and exploration

i mean, i'm just loving the thought of it, prickly liu sang being dragged both physically and verbally by pangzi as they bustle through crowds and holos of a brightly vibrant station hub to meet wu xie who's dining with wu erbai, as xiaoge drifts anonymously behind them in bodyguard mode, expressionlessly accessing the station secsystem and drones while listening to wu xie wheedle his uncle in the feed

haunted space stations! creepy alien tech remnants! nine family infighting and sabotage! smuggling and trafficking and illicit body modification, corporate espionage and betrayal! it all fits together so well it's amazing!

idk idk i just really love the idea of a liu sang who's always been treated as a tool, a piece of property, falling in with an iron triangle team so similar to the preservation crew (seriously, if you can't just picture bai haotian or li cu as pin lee or raathi ...) (does this make hei xiazi or zhang rishan art? discuss) falling into friendship, into companionship, "like a cat falling into a bath" as someone said

i'm just nerding out right now over the character similarities! you should read the fox's geometry (or just go through the whole liu sang tag really, if you haven't already) and also the murderbot diaries (the first four are novellas - they're like 30-35k word fics) and appreciate both with me!

1. Terry's Death.

The way Terry died is.. so instresting to me. We were introduced to him as this kick-ass, redneck, rightist, who killed/tortured people without a care, only for us to see him in his final moments as a shitty old man with a bag over his head.

Like he didn't die from a hit, or an old colleague deciding he was tired of his games. Terry was taken out by a nun who I presume does mercy killings (???). I think the way the writers handled it was incredibly ironic and emotionally wrecking in a span of about 45 seconds.

2. Terry's Paralyzed.

His paralyzation, I like how they had Liam be the reason he was paralyzed, it was very nice to see the child he terrorized be the reason for his demise. a young black boy at that.

3. Frank's Dementia

I had a feeling that this season we'd finally see Frank diagnosed with SOMETHING, he was drinking for decades and was still kicking somehow. So it's, bittersweet to see Shameless remembering that Frank is human and he can't drink damn near everyday for decades and not have some condition (besides that liver thing.)

4. Terry's one of my faves (HEAR ME OUT.)

Now as an lgbtq+, poc, lefist, I have a hatred for his.. or what was his existence. Terry is one of my faves cause the writers wrote him so damn well, they were able to have us consistently hate him from the moment he said something to even right now, while he is dead.

I like the ability his actor had to truly portray the absolutely filith, hatred, evil, and nastiness found in Terry Milkovich.

5. Sandy and Debby's fight(s.)

I can't get over how.. uncomfortably realistic that fight felt. The way they had Sandy back Debbie onto Franny's bed, who during that episode she was an.. awful mother too (I hope that was their way of saying she felt small.) was.. idk, in a way, bittersweet cause we weren't feeling debby as much anymore, but we also still slightly remembered her as the bright eyed little girl excited to help her family.

It was like.. maybe what sandy was saying is.. semi-right? let's add in frank for this one:

• She never really.. had her mom in her life, she was there periodically but never there, usually long enough for debbie to get semi-attached to, but never long enough for debbie to be able to casually say, "yeah my mom is always here.", so, in my mind, while she had fiona as a stand in mom, she never had her mom.. who was there and periodically coming back, there to really teach her the ropes of motherhood, never there to prepare her for birth, never there for her first period, never there to talk to her about sex and protection. so.. debbie never really got that mother daughter relationship, she got a taste but everytime she did, it was gone, and now she'll never get it.

•and Frank, fuckin frank, jesus christ. what can i say? not caring about her underage drinking, smoking, her worrisome obsession at getting pregnant at 15??(girls now but yk.)- that's all I can get into cause.. you can't even get into the intricacies of Frank Gallagher on text ALONE.

I feel like Sandy was on point with what she was trying to say but.. at what cost?

6. Ian and Mickey babies <3

I want them to be fathers so bad <3

lowkey feel like there would be a moment where Mickey is like 'here ya go, daddy.' to Ian with the baby(s) and then later he'd be like.. 'you know, you calling me daddy was.. kinda hot mick.' but yk.

7. Tami Tamietti

I gotta say, when I first saw Tami, I did NOT like her. I mean i was searching on reddit trying to see if we all mutually agreed that Tami needed to gtfo, but as the series progressed, I honestly.. really like her? but worst fucking name ever, Tami Tamietti?? The writers didn't give a single shit.

8. Ian and Mandy's friendship.

I love their friendship, it started off rocky and kinda rapey on mandy's end but it was cute! They had each others backs, they complimented each other perfectly, and It was honestly so sweet. The smart ass Gallaghers and The mean ass milkovich children produce a sweet friendship between one of each.

bonus points for the gallavich.

9. Fiona was selfish?

Everyone says that they didn't like fiona at some point anymore cause she was selfish, but honestly? she had a right to be selfish. A drunk for a father coming and and taking whatever he wants whenever he pleases and the only thing he gives back is misfortune, A mother who comes and goes as she pleases (also traumatizing them with that thanksgiving incident) who suddenly drops dead IN the house.

Then a bunch of siblings who would act rude and ungrateful as hell towards her, (not my boy liam.) then come crawling back the second they need help. Yeah, Fiona deserved to be selfish, she deserved to splurge on herself, she deserved her right to make a mistake, she deserved her right to exist.

I believe that while Fiona was selfish at times, Fiona was the opposite overall. Fiona was self-less, spending what? 20 god damn years? She started taking care of lip and ian like a parent at nine years old, so for about TWENTY years, Fiona dedicated her life, her time, and her basically her existence to her siblings.

She has every right in the book to be selfish.

10. Shameless.

I began watching in late august, early september and honestly? I love the show. I learned from it, can you believe it? I learned from a show with ghetto white people. I'm gonna miss it, I'll rewatch it again, and again. I'll read the fanfics. I love the show. It's my comfort show. Even in it's dark, shitty, controversial moments, I truly love this show.

10/10 I recommend it.

My personal Ever After High ships

No one asked but I’m doing this anyway. Here are my own EA ships. Maybe I’ll make a separate page or something on my tumblr to list them (idk the lingo here haha). I’ll include my anti-ships at the bottom because there are some I’m personally really opposed to. 

In no particular order:

SHIPS

Darling Charming x Holly O’Hair - This is probably my one of my all-time favorites. Was there sufficient interaction in the show? Hell no, they spoke to each other one (1) time on camera. But they’re perfect for each other, I swear. Darling is a knight in shining armor, and Holly has always dreamed of the whole Prince Charming thing or whatever. She writes fanfiction about it, for chrissakes. Darling can be that for her. Plus, I’ve always pictured Holly as liking girls (no matter what she said in Thronecoming lol). Appling/Dapple is nice, but I think Darling can do better than Apple.

Raven Queen x Dexter Charming - One of the only canon ships, but a good one nonetheless. I really like them together. I forgot which post spelled it out on here, but someone else said that Dexter serves as the privileged, down-to-earth guy who feels misunderstood by his family, while Raven is the rebellious girl from the “wrong side of the tracks”. Even though Raven is still wealthy as the daughter of a king and queen, she’s still an outcast. I love that kind of pairing! Dex is one of the only non-Rebels to treat Raven like a real person. Raven teaches Dex how to color outside of the lines. I think they’re a good match for each other.

Lizzie Hearts x Daring Charming - No, I will not be swayed on this. Lizzie and Daring were the OG ship and another CANON pairing. Let’s dissect: Daring is dared by his friends to get a date with her. She has high standards (as she should) and doesn’t give him the time of day. He has to prove himself to her, not use cheap tricks to get her attention. After he takes her on an adventure (getting her out of her comfort zone), she warms up to him. Then she asks him to keep their date a secret, and he does! He takes the dare’s consequence on the chin to protect her reputation. This is honestly out of character for him, which is why I’m hyping up this otherwise bare-minimum act. This friendship continues into the books, as they interact a lot in A Wonderlandiful World. Lizzie and Daring complement each other, too: she’s a responsible, dedicated princess who never loses sight of what’s important. He’s a fun-loving prince who revels in public admiration. Lizzie can teach him to be more responsible while Daring can teach her to relax and have fun.

Ashlynn Ella x Hunter Huntsman - Not much needs to be said. Ashlynn has a vegan cheerleader significant other and you don’t. Jealous? I know I am.

Kitty Cheshire x Ramona Badwolf - She was a werecat, she was a werewolf.  Can I make it any more obvious? They’re both snarky and mischievous. Plus, Kitty would have a chance to redeem herself after almost outing Cerise and her family.

Briar Beauty x Hopper Croakington II - I’m so sorry for all the straight ships :( I promise the sequel to The End of Ever After will NOT be as straight as EAH. Anyway, Briar and Hopper have so much potential. You can tell that Briar has warmed up to him throughout the series. First it was her turning him down and being grossed out by his frogginess. Then she enlists his help with the True Hearts Day dance (though I have a hunch that this was all thanks to Cupid). Then she tolerates his existence at Spring Fairest (and even saves him from being blown away on the Fairest Wheel). Then she enlists his help again with the recreation spell in Epic Winter. She likes him, people! I think Hopper is a really nice guy and a perfect love interest for Briar, who deserves everything in the world.

Duchess Swan x Sparrow Hood - I will die on this hill. They’re together in the *show* and I can prove it. After they “break up” in True Hearts Day (they were just friends then), you see them in the background together all the time. In Epic Winter, they were together when they were spying on Grimm. Why do they spend so much time together? Are they just friends? Or is there something going on between them? I think the second is much more likely. I love their dynamic and wish it was explored more in the show. Also, someone has pointed out that Sparrow’s necklace is the same shape as Duchess’s earrings. This can’t be a coincidence.

Chase Redford x Justine Dancer - I’ll admit it, this ship came out of nowhere for me. It is entirely based on the fact that I think they’d look good together. Ramona/Justine shippers are entirely valid.

Jillian Beanstalk x Lilly-Bo Peep - My final wlw relationship, unfortunately. I feel like Lilly-Bo is a girl who wants to go on adventures, but can’t because of her needy sheep. Seriously, those animals are constantly crying for her attention. Jillian is freewheeling and can help Lilly-Bo chase her dreams.

Alistair Wonderland x Bunny Blanc - The two most boring Wonderlandians deserve each other. Mattel screwed ‘em up badly. Chase/Alistair shippers are valid as well b/c I don’t even know with these two. I guess I like that they’re such close friends? And that they can’t tell that the other person has a crush on them? Who knows.

Nina Thumbell x Humphrey Dumpty - This is another wtf ship. I headcannon these two as being a year younger than the main EAH characters, and I think they’d be cute together, so it’s a ship. No questions please.

The rest of the characters will either find people outside the school to date or not date anyone at all (yes, I’ve headcannoned Cedar as asexual and aromantic, even as a “real girl”).

ANTI-SHIPS

Raven Queen x Apple White - I think @rebelliouslyeverafter had a great post on this. I’ll link it here.

Rosabella Charming x Daring Charming - This is a personal preference since I’m a hardcore Dizzie shipper. I cringe every time I watch Epic Winter because the show pretended like Daring and Lizzie weren’t romantically involved. There’s nothing wrong with the ship inherently, but I much prefer Daring being the Beast but not in love with Rosabella.

Cerise Hood x Daring Charming - Same reasonings as above, but there’s even less material to refer to with this ship (in my opinion).

Duchess Swan x Poppy O’Hair - Why.

All other ships are fine to me, even if I don’t agree with them myself. And of course, you’re free to ship whomever you like. These are just my preferences.

Bughead for the ask meme!

YAY!

When I started shipping them: TBH I binged S1 during spring break my junior year of HS (bout halfway through S2 airing at that time), then managed to catch up to real time with S2. I knew Bughead was meant to be in 1x08: when interrogating FP, Jughead kinda acts like a human shield between his dad and Betty (Juggie’s protective ass is so adorable). The meant to be part comes in after the interrogation when Jug asks if Betty believes FP’s story but she says “I believe you, Jughead.” And then they KISS and it’s the kiss that gets me. It’s the lighting, the Bughead theme they play in the background, the just utter softness between those two that just UGH *passes out*. 1x08 is the greatest Bughead episode of S1 and I will die on that hill.

My thoughts: they need to fucking TALK THEIR SHIT OUT. In general tho - they’ve got amazing chemistry, and I kinda love that they’re only truly open with each other, especially when it comes to talking about trauma. I love me some quality buggles and soft kisses and holy shit they’re just hot, yk?

What makes me happy about them: I love it when you can tell just how fucking happy and loved they make each other feel. Betty and Jughead would kill someone to protect the other, I think that’s pretty badass. They’re just, like, always on the same wavelength.

What makes me sad about them: recently, it’s been watching all of the face grab kisses from over the seasons. Those fucking hurt. I cried myself to sleep with them last night. Those gifs don’t have any mercy. They also just have a shit ton of trauma and they’ve bottled it up and I have a real good feeling that they’re not gonna be opening up to anyone until they end up back together again. They’re just suffering silently. Tabitha’s picked up on some Jughead’s unhealthy habits. Betty’s not in a place with Archie where Archie would be dedicated to helping her through her trauma at all (they’re friends but they haven’t, like, dug underneath the surface of that besides the sexual aspect). They both need some goddamn therapy.

Things in fanfic that annoy me: When people depict Jughead as some shredded dude that is ultra mega hot. You know the type. Can’t stand it - he was meant to be the skinny loner type. Leave his body alone unless being more physically fit has something to do with the plot (like if he’s an athlete in an AU or something where he’s working out and therefore more toned and all that). That’s the main one. Also, the smoking. Jughead hasn’t ever smoked in canon? Idk where everyone got that shit from.

Things I look for in fanfic: I’m a sucker for a good hurt/comfort fic, especially if the hurt is due to trauma and not necessarily just angst. I end up writing trauma into all of my fics, and I guess that’s why. It’s easier to form bonds with people when there’s mutual trauma (I know from experience).

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with if not each other: for Betty I pick Veronica. I am a Beronica fan on the side. I like them together. They’d be a hot couple. For Jughead... maybe Tabitha? I don’t think that one would last forever, but I feel that Tabitha has good intentions and would eventually shove Jughead off to some AA meeting or therapy or both. It would be good for him in the long run.

Happily ever after: they get hitched, they get the fuck away from Riverdale, they go to therapy, they adopt dogs and cats and name the cats after candies and the dogs after Pop’s menu items (Curly Fry, Hamburger, Banana Split, etc.), they start up their own PI firm and Jughead writes on the side, publishing more books. Maybe they start a quiet family? Maybe they don’t. But they be happy and they be together and they have a nice life. (As much as I love FBI Betty, she’s too stubborn to be a fed and follow all their rules... so PI)

Jughead is the big spoon and he’s proud of it, even though he’s the bottom. Betty is the top and the little spoon at the same time, and no I don’t understand how exactly that works out. Sometimes Jughead lets Betty be the big spoon when she feels like it.

Favorite non-sexual activity: investigating. Shnugglin’. Watching old movies. Hugs. Reading together. Laughing at Archie’s clumsy ass together. Etc.

haters say katara was just the avatar’s trophy girl, as if aang didnt kiss the ground she walked on and wouldnt stop telling anyone how amazing she is. Katara was the first face he saw from the new world and they immediately became friends. she was so excited to meet another bender, he clearly is trying to impress her and it is working, he listens to her about bending and offers to take her to the other side of the world to master water, TELL ME at this moment she is not ride or die and she doesn’t even know he’s the avatar, he lets her feel like a kid again, which is a feeling she’s forgotten after years of being a mother to sokka and the children. he literally sweeps her off her feet to save her from the fire nations ship i-. rewatched boy in the iceberg and hoo boy had canon not messed it up, this ship could have been legendary

hard to imagine older them working out what with the whole last airbender, preserve air nomad culture, let’s travel the world bc nomadic lifestyle, what’s marriage i’m a monk without biological family values vs last southern waterbender, preserve southern water tribe culture, I believe in the power of family and am ridiculously dedicated to my tribe,  let me go home to my father and tribe shtick, but I don’t care for after the show finishes much except for following the gang fix the world so I don’t really care about the marriage issue

canon was good until that Mess in season 3, WHY did he kiss her after that speech, wish they talked that out properly, wish he learned letting go of her to open the 7th chakra was the only right decision, wish the ending was a little more vague in ships and just left things open but yk whatever

that finale kiss was sweet, they hugged foremost as friends, no blushing, and then got the fuzzies, that moment standing alone? a+ but without any talking about what happened on ember island, a little unsatisfying

overall, fine ship, not my favourite nor do I actively ship it, but I see a kataang moment, i’m like, sweet so I give it a 6

Zutara (apparently fans are zutarians which looks like an alien race, plus points)

latter half of the show had quite a lot of Zutara potential, but idk about Zutara actual

katara was so ready to drop his ass, no way at the start

there is only one dynamic between them in which I can see Zutara working and that is as in the Stalking Zuko by emletish series where katara is so distrusting over zuko she takes to stalking him to make sure he isn’t doing anything to hurt Aang or about to betray them (her) again but he is just such a sweet dork who keeps trying to apologise to her even while she’s apologising to him for being a bitch that she can’t help but start to trust him, i’m a third into the third book in the series not stalking firelord zuko and I am thriving and tbh this is the only situation where I accept zutara, read the series I love it

age gap is weird, I know it’s the same difference between kataang but they made a point of zuko being older in the show also he’s so much taller and I don’t like 16 year old boys with 14 year old girlfriends in real life and so would katara because jet

katara has a bad experience with bad boy sword weilders (jet) but I guess you could see it as the start of her type idk

they are both the moms of the Gaang. sokka is the fun dad.

there is a parallel between their families, with the leader of their people dad, mom who left the picture when they were young, an older brother who is not a prodigy at/can’ t bend their respective element so they become proficient at swords instead, prodigy at bending younger sister with a violent streak. this is why I see zutara as potentially a really close friendship, almost siblings, but not a romance because to me katara is a little too like azula for comfort...

tbh I think a lot of folk shipped it because ooh fire boy and water girl (not the game) that’ s perfect, and bam army of zutarians

overall, kind of weird but ok and good grounds for humour so I give it a 4

Jetkara (bad ship name, why would you like this, minus points)

Jet is bad. yes Katara really liked him, yes he was definitely her first kiss and she would definitely consider him her first boyfriend but they would not define it because it’s easier to manipulate someone when it’s unclear what your relationship is and Jet is bad, with his weird fricking eyebrows and not even real swords those hook swords

Jinko (cool name, reminds me of Hong Jinkyung, plus points) 

short but so sweet. not the first thing people remember from watching the tales of ba sing se (brb going to rewatch and cry) but really cute, so here’s a running commentary

his first thought was she knew they were fire nation rather than a pretty girl sat in a teashop giving him looks because she had a crush omg

that honest surprise when his uncle suggested she liked her and then she walked up and asked him on a date, adorable

anyone who looked at that god-awful hairstyle and still thought he looked cute has it bad also aww that hair ruffle and the little grab onto his arm

he’s pushing his food around and she’s trying out ice breaker questions and recieving one word responses he has no idea what he’s doing

“she is not my GIRLFRIEND” he’s not over Mai, clearly but he still is trying his best to be a good date even if he’s terrible at making conversation

anyone who sat through that date and the bad lying and the stilted conversation and still thought he was cute has it bad 

he is So Bad At Lying he just told the truth very vaguely and then bam travelling circus

jin so knows the two are fire nation, the whole date she just politely ignores the clear lies and doesn’t react to the obvious firebending, what an icon we love jin

honestly I was really expecting the show to reveal that jin knew he was a firebender if not from the start then from the lights but eh I guess she can keep a secret, good for her

HE KISSED HER BACK BEFORE REALISING A RELATIONSHIP COULD NEVER GO WELL AND HE MAY HAVE ANGSTILY STORMED OFF BUT HE ADMITTED IT WAS A NICE TIME TO HIS UNCLE

she crushed because he saved her hair from getting burnt by tackling her into a fountain? adorable

I love mai she’s so funny but I think not the best match for zuko? he has a lot of trauma to get over and she doesn’t seem like the let all your feelings out and let’s talk about it until you feel better kind of person.  it was deeply ingrained in her to keep all of her feelings and emotions strongly hidden because she got what she wanted from her politician parents so long as she was quiet, well-mannered, and perfectly behaved according to avatar wiki so I get why she’s that way, until I was 11 I was that way too all the time, I understand freezing your face so you don’t look afraid or upset or angry and risk annoying adults, but I don’t think that that would fit zuko with his social ineptness

they literally broke up twice but are just assumed back together? she just surprised him and said they were back together and I think he forgot she existed

the deadpan firelady and the fire lord would be hilarious together tho she got the ruthlessness he lacks

Sukka (terrible name lmao)

the cutest, sokka very excitedly says “Suki!! :DDD” every time he sees her

she didn’t give him the time of day until HE changed, incredible

just the best canon ship, the two nonbenders in the Gaang but very clearly shown to be important key members.

suki is sneaky and badass, rivalling zuko for position on the team as the sneaky badass one (they tie and bond over being sneaky and badass)

sokka is a great dad, he is the dad of the Gaang and he clearly loves suki and suki loves him back

sokka ships are ELITE, 9

Taang (a delicious orange drink mix that reminds me of home, nostalgia)

foreshadowing from the swamp where someone aang loved in the future really made me think taang was endgame yk

opposite elements ideology that I guess is what zutarians like also leaves everyone in the gang dating a Gaang member if zutara happens

actually the same age but not much else going for it

Tokka (great name of a small pet fight me)

sokka ships are elite, childhood crush turned adult strong friendship

I really like seeing the rough, tough, greatest earthbender in  the world have a crush, adorable

sokka is a great friend and his and toph’s canon relationship is so sweet, I wouldn’t change it

toph was fully going to give sokka a kiss on the cheek for saving her life i’m melting

age difference is too weird for a romance he’s like 16 or 17 by the end I think and she’s 12

Toko (very forgettable name but both characters have 4 letters so I guess it’s hard to come up with something memorable but every time I read it as Toph because same shape ish so minus points for being annoying)

toph first accepted zuko despite him burning her feet, how she sees, which was big and they resolved problems between them quickly

convenient ship for kataangers because the Gaang could be paired off as Kataang, Sukka, Toko

her crush on sokka seemed to go away or calm down when he showed up and she punched him and teased him a lot, her way of bonding

similar strict teaching styles and bonding over secret identities as Blue Spirit and Blind Bandit and parental issues and being the children of important families who made them run away to enjoy not having anything to do with politics and being nobility with impaired vision who have never stepped into a kitchen in their lives and being used to servants and then being on the run

I really see them as siblings with her helping him relax from his duties as fire lord because you already know this boy’s sense of honour is going to make him work tirelessly to fix the world and him helping her relax from the whole i’m not a fragile, weak little blind girl, i’m the greatest earthbender in the world shtick and reminding her she can be both a blind 12 year old girl and the most powerful earthbender in the world, she can accept help without being weak or lesser than anyone, people want to help because they care not that they pity you

Sokka’s love for Yue stays with him for the rest of his life, she was the first person to die in front of him and he sees the moon as her facing the earth

Sokka and Yue spend as much time together as possible with secret midnight dates flirting (“you wanna do an...activity together?”)  Sokka’s reaction to Yue’s engagement shows that he wants to have a serious relationship with her, and also he thinks Hahn is a bad person for Yue, which he is. 

Yue dying devastated him and he never falls out of love with Yue. her last words “[she] will always be with him” are true. swamp visions show Yue as one of the most important people in his life like a season or so after he last saw her. he wouldn’t kiss suki in front of the moon, and cries when Yue appears on stage, ignoring Suki. he talks about the moon as if it is directly Princess Yue in that cactus juice scene.

My Thoughts on Chain of Gold Characters

I finished reading Chain of Gold last week! I really enjoyed the book and the characters. I am writing this post to document my thoughts on these characters so when Chain of Iron comes out I can see how much my opinion has changed lol.

Spoilers are under the cut!

James: Okay, I ended up liking James a lot more than I intended. I thought he would be mopey the entire book because of Grace, and I’m so glad that wasn’t the case. I enjoyed reading about his moments in the shadow world, and his confrontation with Belial was awesome. Like he has such awesome powers!

I was irritated at the end because I couldn’t believe he would talk to Grace ALONE after every thing that happened, but James is a good man. I have confidence that he’ll be released from that damn bracelet by COI. One thing I would like to see in the next book is James talking to Tessa about Belial. His demon heritage has bothered him through out the book, and I think it would be nice to talk to his mother about it as well.

Lucie: Hmmm, so I don’t really have a particular like or dislike for Lucie. Her power is cool and I can’t wait to see what she does with it, but other than that I have nothing to really say about her. My favorite moment was when she talked to Grace at the end of the book about bringing Jesse back. Now, that is something I’m looking forward to in the next book! I can’t wait to see how her character develops in the upcoming books :) And concerning Jesse x Lucie, I would like it to stay as a friendship. I can’t possibly imagine them having feelings for one another as of now.

Cordelia: I was not expecting to like Cordelia as much I did. I was so happy that she confronted James about leaving her on the dance floor because at first I expected her to shy away. Cordelia had a lot of great moments with all the characters, and I particularly love her friendship with Anna. She is going to go through hell in the next book, and I wonder how she will confront Elias’s alcoholism. I had many favorite Cordelia moments in the book, but my favorites had to be: 1) Cordelia and James fighting Belial. 2) Cordelia and Anna having tea in Anna’s flat. 3.) Cordelia and Alastair talking about their father’s secret. I admire her dedication to her family and I can’t wait to see what she and Cortana do in COI >.>

Matthew: Matthew, my golden child. So, he is one of my favorite characters by far. I relate to him a lot because I’m also pretty sensitive and I can internalize what people say to me. Which causes me to make rash decisions.

I’m hoping he and Magnus become good friends and they can talk about Matthew’s issues. I don’t know what to expect with Matthew and Cordelia, but I have a feeling it drive a wedge between him and James. I can see Matthew taking a destructive path, and I don’t know who will be able to help him if that happens. At the end of the book, Matthew confronts Alastair about all the nasty things he has said over the past years, and I’m so glad he did. He has kept so much bottled up, so maybe that outburst was kind of cathartic for him. I have a feeling that he will eventually come clean to Henry and Charlotte about what he did…idk. I hope Matthew learns to forgive himself, and in order for that to happen Charlotte and Henry may have to forgive him first.

Anna: I expected to like Anna ever since I first heard about her, and she didn’t disappoint. I love how she became Cordelia’s friend and even sent her clothes. I can’t wait to see Anna and Magnus interact more in COI (hopefully they do!). I was surprised to see Adriane tell Anna that she would win Anna back, and I can’t wait to see how Adriane will do that :)

Thomas:  He’s cool, and I’m so proud of him for making the antidote without Chris. I like his relationship with Chris and how he is the calm one in the Merry Thieves. Tbh, I’m not aboard the Thomas and Alastair ship yet. It has potential, but after Thomas rejected Alastair at the engagement party, I do have to wonder what their relationship will be like.

I’m still not over Magnus’s comment about Thomas having a monster in him. Like I’m lowkey scared lol.

Alastair: Uuf. So, I couldn’t stand Alastair until like the end of the book. This was due to me reading about his bullying of James at the Shadowhunter Academy, and what happened with Matthew in Cast Long Shadows first. So, for a good chunk of the book I didn’t care for him until I finally saw that he cared about Cordelia and his family. His confrontation with Cordelia about Elias was eye opening and I began to see him in a new light. Now, at the Jordelia engagement party, I felt kind of bad for him…But I think it was good for him to see the damage he has caused. I can’t wait to see what happens to him in the next book because I have a feeling he’s going to gain the trust of some of the Merry Thieves (Not James, Lucie or Matthew I bet).

Christopher: Ngl, I thought Christopher was gonna die for a hot sec. Thankfully he pulled through. I like Christopher’s absentmindedness, I thought it was funny. I don’t know why that family tree says he and Grace are married. Like, I have a feeling Grace’s powers won’t work on Chris, and she’ll fall for him? Or the family tree lied again. I’m interested to see what happens with them in the next two books. He’s a good boy. 

Grace: Oh, Grace. Where do I begin? I feel a mix of sympathy and irritation towards you. I really want to know how she got her powers too. That’s all I really have to say. I am interested in her team up with Lucie to bring Jesse back.

Jesse: He’s interesting and I like his dynamic with Lucie. I’m curious to see how they bring him back. I hope to see more of him in the next book because I felt like I didn’t get to know to much about him this book.

Charles: He’s annoying af. Like he wants attention all the time and it irks me. Hopefully, we get to see another side to him, but for now I could care less about Charles. Which sucks because I was excited to see what would become of little Buford 😔

Barbara: I was really interested in her character so I was disappointed she died :/ I don’t know why the family tree says that she dies in 1917. It has to be a mistake…right? I doubt she will come back to life...so I’ll just assume it is a mistake for now.

Belial: I know he’s the antagonist, but I really like him so far! I wonder if Tessa will meet him too…that would be awesome.

Triplets was the first floor that gave me difficulties and had FUN with. I like their floor because it reminded me of one of my own charaters and I liked the twists and turns to it. I liked their boss battle despite me getting REALLY pissed at that one attack where they changed positions via hats and I had to GUESS and foCUS holy crap I was anxious as shIT but it was FUN-

Soulffle because,,, Idk honestly? I think he’s really sweet and he’s like a Gordon Ramsay type of guy. He’s really sweet at people who are trying to learn and actually trying their BEST but when people just do dumb shit he’s just like “Im going to fucking loose it”- idk??

Oh and the obvious answer, I love Luigi. He babie,,,

Hootsby awoke in it after being in his grave for over a decade since the hotel was built over a grave yard. So he didn’t find it he was just kinda... there.

Pieta comes from a family of ghosts and diDNT die of anything. She came here from request of E Gadd to create statues for a more pleasant environment of visitors. And also made an entire floor dedicated to her statues.

a messy explanation of things and unnecessary information about life lately

soooo... right. i’m sorry i haven’t really been around aside from popping in here and there, and that i’ve been taking longer than usual to reply to things / not replying to things at all. it’s NOT that i’m upset with anyone or trying to ignore / avoid anyone, and it’s not that i don’t care / don’t love talking to you (whomstever you may be) i love chatting with y’all and wish i could get myself to reply to things quicker but i do not control the me lmfao honestly my sleep has never had a schedule but in recent weeks it’s kinda been operating like there’s a lil gremlin in my head who spins a wheel and picks my sleeping times at random - and it’s either like.. two hours or most of a day. there hasn’t been a lot of in between so that’s a thing!!

also in a fun added mix of maybe sleep?, missing meds, being stuck in the house more often than not, and the FUCKING EVERYTHING happening in the world right now my mental health is... probably run by the same goblin that runs my sleep schedule lmao consistency whomst?? since the lockdown started the depression has of course been around more but actually, worse than that, is how my anxiety - and by extension: my ocd - have really amped up and i need y’all to know that the struggle is painfully real (and another thing that affects shit like my replies and writing. reading as well. fics have been kinda stressful and that should be illegal. who authorized this?) i don’t hate talking about it but i don’t really like it either?? especially like.. in depth. but i will say there has been crying, screaming, pain!, and i’ve acquired a few physical injuries.

ON A PERSONAL LEVEL - THE FULL LEVEL - THINGS.... are pretty great actually! i mean aside from the state of my fucking house e__e but Josh has been working from home for two (2) months now and it’s been really nice - people complaining about their partners being home?? can’t relate. yknow what?? i just might love that tall bastard even more from all this.fuck all y’all miserable fucks

we’ve been going out for drives and we’ve gone fishing and the only place i’ve gone too that’s re-opened is goodwill. because i require.. the shop. they do have a masks required rule! (at least at the one here) and, alongside that, the places we’ve gone that never closed (like grocery stores and the gas station and the hardware store) have social distancing rules and stuff in place which i love. can we keep social distancing after this is all over?? more things here in wisconsin are opening up and we might go to some. idk though. we also might not. either way its still a weird kind of exciting to see things opening back up?? even though i do think we’re not totally in the clear because most of our gov. sucks (our mayor tried to extend our stay-at-home order - keyword there is TRIED. we are the land of cheese, cows, and no fucking braincells for anyone) 

having pets is obviously not a new thing for me but it’s still a thing. so it takes time and effort and energy and patience and love and a certain disregard for your own safety (claws. they really be as sharp as you think) so... it can be stressful, especially cuz we’ve had to keep them inside more as it gets hot out and something keeps breaking our porch screens (our cats are allowed onto our screened in porch or they can go out in a harness but we will never let them run free outside. fuck that noise)  my bbies are all so cute and their personalities and idiosyncrasies are just... *chefs kiss* i love em and they’re definitely a part of what has made quarantine better

i’ve seen my mom a few times, like for my birthday and when she needed help moving Isaiah from one dorm to another and such, but that’s primarily been an option because she has become anti-mask and anti-stay-at-home-order. initially she wasn’t - she gave Isaiah and i fun lil masks since at that time trying to buy them would be impossible and she thought nothing of staying home - but i guess either as its dragged on or as she’s consumed her middle-right wing news that changed s o. she does take social distancing in public very seriously though, so at least there’s that. our favorite coffee shop, where we - pre-lockdown - always went one (1) or two (2) times a week to do art for hours re-opens on monday and that’s one of the few things i’ve truly missed.

josh’s camping trip for this weekend with his friends had to be cancelled because the parks weren’t going to open in time. so today they’re going somewhere to do at least some of the things they would have done if they had gone camping. bikes, bonfires, and cigars. i’m kinda jealous negl but he was really excited about it so mostly i’m happy

trying to figure out how human services was running things during lockdown was rough but thankfully it didn’t take much to get it sorted. mostly because my mom made the phone call i was supposed to lol (the phone anxiety is on its own level) so wednesday afternoon my mom sat with me while i had the appointment with my psychiatrist over speakerphone (which was.. an experience)

OH YEAH! Probably absolutely my favorite thing that’s happened is: WE’RE STARTING THE SEARCH FOR A NEW HOUSE!!!! it doesn’t mean we’re gonna be moving soon or anything, we don’t want to make the same mistake twice (buying the first house you tour that you love) because while it is a great house ultimately it is way too small for us. i mean there’s me and josh, all six cats, and ALL OUR SHIT. listen: i have an entire room dedicated to my various hobbies. and a walk in closet that isn’t big enough. and we both have collections we love and want to display (right now upstairs its hello kitty and downstairs its astronomy and the titanic. and then there’s pop figures, mtg, collectibles, our bottle collection and various knickknacks, etc.) plus all our books! then furniture and cat furniture (i.e towers) and all their shit because they are spoiled babies. and god forbid we ever have a human kid?? yeah. it’s just not big enough. 

so we’re gonna take more time with this choice but what we do know is:: we wanna live out in the country (i’m paranoid and don’t like to be looked at and he loves the outdoors, lived on a farm for awhile. i also enjoy the outdoors but mostly since we moved into this house i’ve struggled with doing anything outside... while we only have one neighbor on our road. but there’s one across the road and one at the other side of our backyard and that’s just too much lol) 

lets see.. um.... my birthday was may 2nd and that was pretty nice, for a pandemic birthday. there’s been a lot of stuff happening involving josh’s family but that’s not something i really wanna get into on here, tho i will say things have been better in recent weeks and it’s been... really nice. josh and i went to his mom’s house the other night and got drunk with her for fun and i actually had a really good time?? and didn’t complain about going?? that’s kinda unheard of.

i don’t have a job anymore - haven’t since early march-ish - and it kinda sucks but also the universe really did me a solid because my choices were either allow myself to work until i have a mental break again or quit. and i was leaning towards quitting (things had been going down hill with the owner and other employees and just the business as a whole for awhile and there’s a limit to the amount of bullshit i can take thanks) but now it doesn’t seem i have to. why do i think i’m jobless? i was barely working anyway, bc of the snow business was slow, and in march i got really sick and stayed home for a week. the day i was supposed to go back i was still sick, and covid19 was starting to become more of a serious situation everywhere, so josh called in for me and explained that between still being sick and my anxiety over covid (asthma + a not so great immune system) i wasn’t going in that day. i never heard from them again. so. 

but it’s all good - there are some options but i’m not looking into them seriously until it’s safe to.

Not really. I mean, we get along and we try not to fight. But we have very different beliefs on very big topics, so I have to keep that to myself. They definatly have their faults and it definately affected my childhood and our relationship. In the future, after I move out, I will distance myself from the a lot, but I hope that I won’t have to cut them out.

My little brother. He’s adorable.

So many things, I could write a book about my regrets.

Very, I’m insecure about almost everything. Ask literally anyone close to me and they will tell you.

Single, single, single. And at this point in life, with all of my past relationships, I doubt I will even consider a relationship for a long while. Too much pain and fear for rejection and that type of stuff.

Honestly, I think it would be cool to die from alcohol poisoning or something like that. But if we are being realistic, any way that isn’t painful, like in my sleep.

In the past, I have played both baseball and softball on teams. I haven’t played any sports in the past 8-9 years and I doubt I will any time soon.

Yes. I have gone to multiple youth group all nighters where they lock you in a building and give you a bunch of stuff to do so that you don’t sleep. I’ve done it three times and have never lost it.

I mean, I always hate myself, does that count? Honestly, a little. For almost a year now, I’ve hated this girl who was talking shit about me because she heard a rumor and decided to hate me. I’ve mostly gotten over it, but I still really don’t like this girl.

Does a little brother count? No, I do not. My family rents a house and our landlord says no pets. We almost adopted a dog that broke into our house, but we couldn’t because of the landlord.
